Scene 4 Onward to Rattledam


Back to the Future...(DM BatMark)

Xel'Aw catches the looks that the manfri men are making. Highlight to display spoiler: {They are looking back and forth from the party to the area where the babies were birthed by the pods, and surmises that they are uncomfortable with outsiders having seen this take place. You recall that Mahyawu had said "And the dream said that in the newness of time would strangers see our ways and understand them."--perhaps you are the first to see such things!}

Bigby, Haemir, Grindar, and Sol grab packs as they are able, which in Sol’s case seems to be not so much. Nor is Sol able to discern anything more regarding arcane features of these strange men. 'Lil picks up the slack on the sacks, with a little nudge to Grindar.

At Ahyoka’s gently ribbing, Mahyawu smiles and says, "Come, it is time. You have much to see and learn, so let us be on our way. The mists begin to rise again, surrounding your little group and eventually obscuring signs of the other manfri. Mahyawu leads the way into the mist, walking with his stick and beckoning for you to follow. As you go, he continues to answer some of your questions. "Climbers, why they are the finest builders in the Sargrass. If anyone can help you rebuild the dome, it would be them. You will see Rattledam, or the place it once was. I feel no signs that it is inhabited by anyone these days. But yes, it is likely to be filled with dangerous creatures. This is the Sargrass, beautiful and deadly all at once."

After a time, or is it no time at all, you begin to make out some familiar turf beneath your feet and the halfling village begins to emerge from the mists. The carnage is just as you left it, as if no time at all had passed during your walk with the manfri. The slain halflings and their gear are strewn around, unmoving. Mahyawu and Ahyoka look around with distaste. Bigby and Haemir may recall that they had just proposed to begin searching when the mists descended…

"Any idea where we should go to find these buildings and could you point us toward Rattledam?

Xel'Aw will begin repacking things on the cart, rather than lifting heavy dwarves, bags, or loot - but he will go from tent to tent to see if there are any supplies the party should take from the halfling camp.

Bigby emerges from the mist with everyone else. Looks to Haemir and says "did we just say that we should search for the dwarves or was it loot? How much time has passed anyhow? Well I suppose we should get to. I believe the dwarves were with us...and tended to, so they must be ok now." Bigby raises an eyebrow intrigued by all of this as if there were something to solve but it was beyond his comprehension. But always the practical one, Bigby says, "dwarves are ok, let's check for loot then." (perception: 15)

Haemir watches Grindar for a few seconds (Sense motive:3) before deciding all is well with him.
Answering Bigby he says; "Both. Let's check the Dwarves are ok first, load them in the cart and then search the camp".
To Mahyawu and Ahyoka he says, "Please excuse us whilst we clear up here. Will you be coming back to our camp?"

'Lil has some healin' magic left, so she looks to the dwarves. "You guys go look around. I'll handle any wounded. The sooner we're outta this place, the better. The smell'a all these halflings is gonna bring predators."

Sol nods.

"Lil speaks true. We should be wary, I imagine we are in the area the halflings count as theirs, and so we should not linger here."

He watches Grindar and Xel'Aw with curiousity, before going over to them.

"You two both did well in that... melee early. We could perhaps use some more strong arms if we are to try and tame the Sargrass. Powers know I am not physically adept or inclined, and I cannot see anyone else in our little troupe having an issue with more people watching their back."

He pauses for a moment.

"Though it may not be my decision to make..."

He raises his voice so everyone of the group can hear him.

"What do we think about these two? I feel they could be helpful in a scrap should we get into anymore. If they want do, should we let them join us?"

Xel'Aw asks questions of your guides, and begins to search for supplies. In response, Mahyawu says, "There are no buildings left, but I will show you the way."

Grindar helps out, under the not so watchful eye of Haemir, who decides that the fellow is alright. Bigby also searches for loot, once assured that the dwarves are ok. 'Lil makes sure of that. Ahyoka assists in the search of the tents and leaves the bodies to you. Sol raises the question of whether to have the two strangers, who fought alongside you against the halflings, join your merry band.

Your search of your fallen foes reveals several interesting items. Among them are a vial with an oily liquid that has flakes of iron floating in it, a bottle with what looks like very thin quicksilver, a thunderstone, a very high-quality set of medium sized studded leather armor, a finely wrought javelin with interesting storm etchings carved into it, a masterwork composite longbow (+3 STR adjusted), and a masterwork spear. You also find a total of 25gp and 50 sp. There are some very primitive tools and cookware of shoddy construction, all sized for small hands and of no real value. You wouldn't want to eat any remaining food…

Just as you finish your search, you hear a yelp from Ahyoka from one of the tents. She bursts from the doorway, and you see flames beginning to lick up the sides of the tent and out into the beaten-down grass within the compound. "Fire!" It starts to spread very fast, aided by the matted dry grasses. Caelwyn stands in mute shock at the sight.

Caelwyn is interested in taking the spear, perhaps, but at the sight of the fire he immediately springs into action. "Where is the nearest well, or other source of water? We need to put this out before it spreads!" (Perception 20)

"I say you grab what you can, finish loading the sick dwarves and let nature handle nature. If the grasses here are too dry and ignite, then their ash shall feed new grasses later. Unless our guide disagrees?" Grindar - help me unload the rest of these corpses to make room for the loot and let's get out of here - you can decide if you all want to keep us or not when we're safe (diplomacy 17)."

"look at the size of this armor! who knew these halflings could wear such armor!" Bigby composes himself and hears sol's question, "if they want to come let em come." Bigby looks over at Ahyoka and sees the fire and decides to cast create water to see if it will help any. 2 gallons of water spurt from Bigbys hands towards the fire. "if for some strange reason the grass catches further ablaze it wasn't me."

Grindar springs into action! He nods to Xel'Aw, but yells out, "I can't run from a fight!" he than grabs hold of the closest tent, and using his impressive strength (19) he will attempt to rip it's stakes out of the ground, strength check 11 if he's successful, he will use the tent as a fire blanket, to try smothering the flames. If he can't, he will draw a dagger, and quickly cut as big of a chunk of material as possible out of the tent, and begin using it as a fire blanket next round.

Haemir watches for a second or two trying to ascertain which approach is most effective, if it's Bigby's he helps by creating water too, if Grindar needs help he chips in there... or if Manfri suggests something else...
Otherwise he will clear flammable things from the fires path

Sol's jaw drops at the speed at which the fire is spreading. Quickly thinking about the spells he has available and realising none of them will help, he rushes over to Grindar and tries to aid him at taking the other tent apart, then attempt to put it out to quench the flames.

"Bigby! Haemir can either of you wet this tent? It will make it more able to douse the flames!"

Caelwyn snaps out of his reverie and looks about for a well or source of water, but recalls that such things are rare in and near the Sargrass.

Xel'Aw quickly starts unloading the bodies and reloading the cart with loot and the recovering dwarves, looking to Grindar for assistance. Grindar, however, is busy trying to put out the fire with a tent, but does not seem to be making much headway as it soon catches fire too. Sol was moving to help before realizing that it was a lost cause.

Bigby exclaims at the size of the armor before recalling that Ashurbanipal was more of a three-quarters-ling than a halfling. He magics some water out of thin air, but the paltry spurt rapidly turns to steam in the growing inferno.

'Lil looks to the manfri for guidance, and sees that Mahyawu is beckoning the party to hurry to the north gate, as the flames spread like, well, wildfire. Haemir sees this too, and it occurs to him that getting out while the getting is good might be the wisest course of action.

Ahyoka joins Mahyawu in leading the party out of the north gate, and you escape just as the walls of of the palisade go up with a roar. Fortunately the grasses outside the wall seem lusher than the dry-as-tinder and matted vegetation inside, and the flames do not pursue as you gain some distance from the village. You have managed to save the cart, donkey, dwarves, loot, and yourselves, so all in all not a bad few moments of work.

After you catch your breath for a moment, Mahyawu beckons you to follow him, but is headed away from the coast and the camp near your ship. "Come, and I will show you Rattledam that was, if you like. I think it may be your best hope to live out the week in the Sargrass. It will take a little time, but be worth your while, I imagine." He turns and begins to walk inland.

"Wow that fire spread quick..." Haemir watches the exchange between Bigby and Ahyoka impassively and starts to follow the Manfri asking the odd question about grasses if he sees a particularly strange or new one.

Xel'Aw speaks to Haemir in a whisper, "Let the dead bury the dead he said when he arrived. I think he meant the Sargrass grasses and I think that's exactly what they did.

Grindar follows the Manfri, and as they travel he tries to strike up a conversation with 'Lil saying. "That's a pretty impressive Warhammer, does it have a name?" he then adds, "This was my fathers ax, (referring to his orc double ax) he named it Cyrchwr Mawr which in the orc language means giant slayer".

OOC... Cyrchwr Mawr is actually Welsh Gaelic for giant slayer

"I have never seen fire that aggressive. This place gets more and more interesting each day."

He then smiles widely, following Mahyawu to wherever he leads them.

is there no water in this forsaken place...oh well let it burn...no one else seems to be bothered why should I. Besides, I just remembered sources of water such as wells are rare here. I'll have to remember that for next time.

Caelwyn joins with the group. He doesn't disagree to the two new members joining but he's cautious.

He's never worked with a half-orc or a drow before...he's always thought they'd be on the other end of his sword, but perhaps these two are different. He will have to keep an eye on them and he hopes to be proven wrong about his suspicions of them. He's decided that if these two prove to be good-natured, and prove to be companions, that he will be the first to admit he was wrong for judging them.

"excuse me Mahyawu, what is this place Rattledam? Why is this place our best place of hope?"

Haemir tilts his head listening to Xel'Aw before answering him. "An interesting theory about the plains" then he spots the journal and cracks a smile. "Ah yes I have indeed heard of the guild. In my youth I was an apprentice sage of the Chamber of Acquisition and Records, but in my latter years I moved on to Instruction. May I"? He examines the symbol on Xel'Aw's book, "Hmm, I believe that places you as a fellow member of Instruction as well", he says with a smile but than as if in after-thought it vanishes, "That is unless you came by this book by nefarious means. Tell me have you lost your memory"?

'Lil does a headcount and prepares to move out. Grindar follows along, and begins a conversation about who has a bigger weapon. Sol smiles broadly after regaining his breath, and also follows Mahyawu's lead.

In answer to Bigby's question, Ahyoka says, "The firepot in the tent got knocked over, and the dried out grasses took it from there!" Bigby and Haemir look askance at Ahyoka's claim. She is clearly dissembling, but not very good at it. Xel'Aw seems to agree with Bigby and Haemir's suspicions, and recalls something that Mahyawu said back in the village. His ruminations on his Star Mage journal attract Haemir's attention, and they find either common ground or enmity…

Caelwyn asks for more information about Rattledam, and Mahyawu expounds as he continues to walk inland. "What is Rattledam? Well, perhaps I should first answer 'what was Rattledam?' instead. For before the ruin of the Sargrass, before it was ripped from the Wold, Rattledam was a special place, a town, if you can believe it, right in the Sargrass. It was a place of justice, balance, and art. Beauty and peace. Monks of Pantheon established the place, and it is said that the Gods sent some climbers to teach them how to build a grass dome to protect the town from the elements, and from other dangers of the Sargrass."

"Today, there is nothing left of that town. A sea of Woldsblood swallowed the place, and now nothing grows there, not even Sargrass! That is why I think it might suit you, because you will not have to deal with the constant influence of the grasses within that place—which for outlanders such as yourselves, could be quite a boon. For the true Sargrass lies ahead, and we are just on the fringes of the place."


You pass the rest of the day trying to keep your spirits up as the sun beats down and you work your way up and down some modest slopes. Mahyawu and Ahyoka are pleased to answer any questions about the land that you might have. They point out some patches of Purple Grass, and you can try your hand at getting water from it if you like. You probably do like, since it is parchingly warm out here. When evening finally comes, Mahyawu leads you to a clear spot and suggests that you make camp here.

"I suppose it is altogether possible I did acquire this through nefarious means, though it seems unlikely. I awoke to a ringing in my head and the name Xel'Aw Xu'Thu on my lips when Grindar asked. The books here name Xel'Aw the author and their knowledge seems to all be familiar to me. I remember some childhood memories, but there are definitely some incongruities - how did I get here? What is my purpose? Why do I not share the rather flamboyant hairstyles of my free Surface Drow kin? What is someone like myself doing wandering the grasses with no fighting knowledge, no physical strength, and not a single battle spell in book. I can card tricks, useless! And I write poems. Am I just some hanger-on to real heroes like yourselves?

I am most likely from the chamber of instruction as I have knowledge of the pedagogical sciences in my head. But all that transpired from ages 8 to... well, I look a bit over 100 to me, all gone. I remember asking one of the local halflings about some of the grass and the next thing I know, there is Grindar and the sick dwarves and the threat of being eaten. Do you have reason to be suspicious of me? I don't feel like I'm the suspicious type, but I suppose such types would say the same."


Xel'Aw continues the journey watching the Manfri and attempting his hand at the various survival tasks they give but struggles to make it work for him (Survival 9)

"thank you for taking the time to explain all of this to us. I see so this will be a good place for us to set up shop and to be safe. So monks created this place? Are there still monks in these lands? Also, what are these climbers you speak of?"

Caelwyn is intrigued that Rattledam was created justice, balance, and art. hopefully we can make it that again, he thinks to himself.

Caelwyn sees that it is time to make camp and begins to help set up whatever is needed. "Is there anything special we ought to do setting up camp here Mahyawu?"

Bigby listens Ahyoka tell her tale. "the fire pot in the tent got knocked over...assuming by you Ahyoka...and the dry grass took over...hmmm...I see." After picking up that Ahyoka seems nervous talking about this, Bigby chooses to not press further smiles, and says "thanks again for explaining to us Ahyoka...it must have been very scary for you and...well it was just you correct, that was in there."

Bigby doesn't think things add up, but there's nothing nefarious seemingly happening. He's just not sure as to why they would hide the fact that they wanted the village to burn. Perhaps I will have to ponder on this a bit more and keep an eye out just in case. Bigby was surprised he enjoyed trying to solve the mystery so much.

Bigby will use survival skill to attempt to figure out how to get water from the purple grass. (survival 19). And setting up camp for him and Wolfgang is as simple as a fire and curling up together.

"Aye, I call her Ramona. She's a little too big for me, if we're bein' honest. I'm havin' trouble getting used to her weight, but I just love'er too much to let her go. We'll get better, her and I."

A surge of memories strike Xel'Aw and he remembers sitting in the Chamber of Instruction with several people teaching them the fluid hand gestures of Drow Sign Language...

Also, he suddenly remembers the names of many nobles and their titles and relationships to each other, though he doesn't know if they're living or dead. Another flash of him hunting in the woods near his village around age 15.

"Grindar will be pleased..."

OOC: Added another linguistics point for Drow Sign Language, added Celestial as I didn't add one from my Linguistics earlier. Should be good on my level up but making this post for Jeremy.

Sol smiles listening to the teaching being given, and even attempts to draw water from the Grasses which he does a passable job at from memory, even if he doesn't gain any water.

"Xel'Aw, it is interesting to me that you have no memories... I am sorry that you have been taken from yourself. Perhaps by exploring the Sargrass you could regain that which is lost?"

Sol is getting out of breath throughout the day, as he is not as hearty as his companions nor used to long walks carrying things, though he doesn't complain, anyone can tell that he is not used to this level of exercise.

Haemir listens to Xel'Aw with a series of differing facial expressions including a grin at the mention of flamboyant hairstyles before replying.

"I have done nothing that has earned me the title of hero Xel'Aw Xu'Thu and I am sorry that you have lost some of you life. The mind can be a ... well" he leaves that sentence hanging as he fires Xel'Aw an appraising look.
"You have given me no reason to be suspicious of you and from the way you converse I am almost certain that the sages field manual belongs to you. From the symbol I believe you to be a teacher possibly, like myself". He offers the drow a warm smile.
"I hope you decide to stay with us, as I said before you are both welcome and maybe over time we can get to the bottom of your memory loss".

Haemir also tries his hand at the various survival tasks (Survival:9) en route and casts detect magic on the loot.

To ‘Lil Grindar says, “I’m sure you and Ramona have a grand future”’ and to Haemir he says, “Thank you friend, if the majority of the party sees me as an asset and agree with your welcome, then I will most certainly stay, truthfully, I find you all to be a worthy lot, and would like to stay”.

Xel'Aw, Haemir and Sol trade some insights, and find some common ground.

Caelwyn inquires about monks and climbers, and how to make camp in these lands. Mahyawu responds, "I am certain that there are monks who remain despite the explosion of the Crystal Mountains, but I have not seen or encountered them here yet. Same is true for the climbers, although we might get some clues when we reach Rattledam-that-was. As for camping, spill no water, for it might attract attention here so close to the Sargrass. We were very lucky that the fires in the village turned your spell water straight into steam! Other than that, be on alert, for there are hungry things in the night."

Bigby seems able to put Ahyoka at ease, and she seems relieved rather than gloating or smug at that. She returns the favor by reminding him how to draw the water from mid-stalk of the Purple Grass, and he is successful on his first try. "You do that like a native," she enthuses.

'Lil shows off Ramona to Grindar, who expresses his interest in joining the party, as does Xel'Aw when invited.

During pauses and when arriving at the campsite, you manage to appraise and magically examiner your recent spoils of victory. The studded leather armor has a faint aura (+1 enhancement bonus), while the javelin, in keeping with its engravings, is found to be a javelin of lightning! The vial is oil of magic weapon and the quicksilver is a potion of expeditious retreat.

You settle in to the campsite as darkness falls. Towards the coastline, there is a glow, probably from the still burning village, but it fades over time. Ahyoka suggests that you set a standard watch order, so that the others may rest easy and recover from the travails of the day.

During the evening, Mahyawu beckons Haemir over and says in a low voice. "You know, there was more to my dream than I have mentioned already. Do you like books? I have a feeling that you do, or will," he says with his enigmatic smile. "But be careful, paper cuts hurt like bladegrass." You think he is joking a little, but it is hard to tell. The manfri steps in front of Haemir, and with his back to him, aligns their arms together, with Mahyawu's on top of Haemir's. "Close your eyes and try to see through mine..yes, I know this is unusual, but just let it happen, like a dream." They both close their eyes, and the manfri extends his arms forward, guiding Haemir's along the same path. To Haemir, nothing feels unusual, but the others in the camp can see their arms reaching forward into...nothingness. Where did their arms go? It looks like they fade into nowhere, which perhaps is what is happening.

Mahyawu curls his fingers inward with Haemir's wrapped within them. Haemir can feel a fairly smooth, flat surface, upon which rests what feels like a closed tome in his closing grip.

Bigby enjoys the water and takes note about spilling water bringing attention. That is very important to know Bigby thinks to himself. He responds to Ahyoka's compliment with a smile and response, "thank you Ahyoka, I'm still learning and will take any advice you have to give. The Sargrass is a fascinating place and we, (pointing to himself) are but strangers here. We have much to learn. Tell me Ahyoka, what is there to eat here? Do you hunt something to eat or make something from the grass? Bigby will utilize whatever suggestion Ahyoka gives to Bigby for obtaining food."

Bigby and Wolfgang will take their turn in the watch rotation for the night and then sleep when it is not their turn.

Haemir is slightly perturbed by Mahyawu's suggestion but is quickly learning to trust the Manfri Seer.
In the place where their hands go he feels the solid surface and then leaves?
Is it a tree or a book? Unable to decide he closes his hand around it and slowly withdraws them, his breathing betraying a slight tension... if whatever it is decides to come back then he brings it - if it resists then he will not fight it. Passing all trust to the moment.

Haemir breathes a sigh of relief when he opens his eyes and his hands are still there, holding a very unusual tome. He immediately gasps the breath back in when he sees the book. It's cover is sleek, black woven grass, with silvered tips. Its seems to nearly glow with fae power that you can see out of the corner of your eye. Mahyawu says, "This was once the book of another seeker of knowledge, who passed on to greater deeds. Long have my people held it, but I dreamed that it called out to you, and so it would seem to be in this waking world as well. Study it, treasure it, and use its knowledge wisely."

Haemir cannot resist the call of this tempting tome, and immediately huddles down to devour its contents. The rest of the party can see Haemir's growing excitement as he absorbs the knowledge in the book. Could it be a trick of the flickering firelight, or is Haemir's skin turning a little darker and his eyes a deeper shade? In any event, Mahyawu does not seem alarmed, but looks on with placid satisfaction.

Grindar feels as though he is being watched, and so he looks around and notices Caelwyn keeps looking in his direction perception 21 He tries to get a read on the Paladin sense motive 17 then decides to go over and just talk to him, saying, "I get the impression that you don't trust me, maybe if I shared my story with you, you may be able to relax a bit. I was born a second generation half-orc, meaning both my parents were half-orcs. the only full blooded orc I have ever seen was one my father cut down when it attacked my mother and me on out little farm when I was but a child. Prior to meeting my mother, my father was a adventurer, a ranger like me, to be precise, fighting for the causes of goodness and justice, and he taught me to act with integrity and kindness to others. My childhood was pretty joy filled, and blissfully uneventful until the day hill giants attacked the small town we lived just outside of. My father did his best to lead a defense, but things were looking pretty grim until a certain Halfling Paladin by the name of Succotash Slenderstick came charging to our rescue on the back of his wild pig mount Miss Piggy. Succotash was able to rally the townspeople and personally cut down the leader of the hill giants. He also used his divine healing to save many of the most critically wounded, including Grindar, my father. I was but ten on that fateful day, but knew that I wanted to be like my hero, I mean friend Succotash and sense I didn't have the aptitude to take on the mantle of a Paladin, I asked my father to train me as a ranger, so I could go through out the Wold doing good deeds. In fact it was on the day of my departure that Grindor gave me Cyrchwr Mawr, his double ax. I hope this truth filled tale will help settle your troubled mind".

"I've met Succotash at a weird inn called the giggling ghost. I somehow thought it was a dream as we were opening presents, but weirdly enough I still have the presents in my possession. What am I to do with a lolipop guild?? Anyhow, Succotash told me a tale about losing his mount once and getting Miss Piggy revived. Amazing tale. Succotash seems like a very honorable character Caelwyn. I'm sure if he has an ounce of influence over Grindar, then surely Grindar is worthy to be here. Bigby by the way."

Sol watches Haemir with a look that shows his confusion, his concern and possibly even a hint of envy.

However that all gives way to concern when he thinks Haemir's pallour gets paler. He pauses and watches for a little while, watching Haemir devouring the book's contents, he goes over to him, and gently touched Haemir on the shoulder, though Sol takes great care not to look in the book, almost as if he is afraid of it.

"Master Haemir, are you quite alright?"

Xel'Aw makes camp for the night and Grindar sees him struggle to lift his pack. After an offer to carry some of his load, Xel'Aw hands over a pot (4lbs) and his sickle, "I am not sure I even know how to use it effectively. Mayhaps we should sell it? I don't know why I came prepared as I did. Perhaps I thought to farm the grasses here? Though, I don't think this will work. I wonder if it holds some clue to my identity? Regardless, if you don't mind Grindar, it will certainly be in better hands in your hands."

ooc: sickle = 6lbs and I'm keeping both on my sheet so the WBL is calculated against me, though I imagine I'll pay Grindar something of the profit as he is doing all the work.

Dark inks stain the pale elf's fingertips, but with each page the ink eerily slithers up his fingers like a shadow-vine creeping up his hand till it flows under his sleeve and eventually undulates from behind his collar saturating his neck. Raising a hand he briefly scrutinises it before curious hazel eyes slip back to the stygian tome.

After a while dark purple energy crackles around Haemir accompanied by an ozone smell before vanishing and he responds to a concerned glimpse from Fand by casually raising a hand...

As the night progresses he neglects food and drink but manages to drag himself away for his watch. Loading his xbow Haemir sits silently with Fand (Perception:3 & Fand:17) as many thoughts still pervade his mind. By then his skin is as dark as a Drow or Manfri...

Haemir is still recognisable as his facial features haven't changed, but now piercing blue eyes stare back and the subtle, haunting Fey aura from the book also enshrouds him.

Haemir seems to have…changed. The magic of the book has transformed him physically, although his spirit seems undiminished, and Mahyawu does not seem alarmed. Haemir's skin is darker but his mood seems bright and excited. At least the excitement keeps him awake during his turn on watch. Sol shows some concern for Haemir, but sees nothing specific to remedy.

'Lil observes the changes but keeps her distance. Caelwyn also keeps an eye on matters both within the camp and without, taking a turn standing watch. Grindar notices Caelwyn's attention, and makes a moving speech about his origins and intentions.

Bigby notes this exchange and speaks in support of Grindar. He then spends his time learning how to cope in this new environment. Ahyoka informs him that the dwellers in the Sargrass eat a variety of game and plant-based foods, some which is carefully cultivated. She hopes that the manfri can teach you newcomers some of the trick of the latter, once you are established.

Xel'Aw accepts help from his former cage-mate, Grindar, in carrying some of his gear, and seems to have no trouble accepting him at face value.

After all the action and excitement of the previous day, the night passes in splendid peace. Fortunate, since not many of you chose to stand watch. That peace all comes to a crashing halt with the dawn. Haemir wakes with a thrashing start and furious squawking from Fand. There's something inside your bedroll, furry and moving! Haemir Highlight to display spoiler: {Whatever it is somehow is in your mind. You feel a wave of…contentment and satisfied coziness. On closer examination, you find a Masked Grass Weasel is sharing your accommodation, and you feel an instant, familiar bond with it. (OOC: This is your familiar. Don't let the others kill it!)}

Even worse, just as dawn breaks, those on last watch notice movement back in the direction of the halfling village. Someones or somethings, actually a lot of them by the sound of it, are moving your way in the semi-darkness. They do not seem to be trying to move stealthily, from the sound of it. At the edge of your vision in the half darkness, a gaggle of perhaps two dozen humanoid shapes come lurching unevenly toward your camp.

(Those who are still asleep—which is everyone, except Haemir and Fand, who are not on watch—please make a DC 10 perception check to be awakened by the ruckus. Any who remain asleep can be awakened by someone taking an action to shake them.)

(perception 22). Bigby and Wolfgang spring awake and Bigby decides to don on his armor while Wolfgang grabs at a party member to wake up. "be careful they don't attack you, Wolfgang, thinking you are attacking them." Bigby goes over his battle list...armor check...weapons...he flicks claws out...check...ride...looks over Wolfgang.... "stop playing around waking up our friends, we got a battle to fight." Bigby takes a look at where the movements are coming from and attempts to determine if there is space for an entangle spell and when would be a good time to use it. (survival skill 20).

Haemir jumps to his feet glaring at his bedding area and Fand makes a merry noise as if someone just stepped on her feathers, squeaking and flapping about in a right frenzy. "What the...? Oh, hello"... Haemir says and smiles, crouching to inspect his bedding. Something skitters out and runs up his sleeve.

Standing up and stretching his back he yawns and then suddenly becomes aware of a noise in the distance. Holding out his arm Fand lands on it and the two stare towards it, then his eyes widen. "That doesn't look good" he says seeing whatever it is heading towards their camp.

Grabbing a nearby pot he starts to bang it. "Wake up, we have company ... incoming"

If he sees someone is not waking he will shake and jostle whoever is nearest. Fand also pokes and prods people as well to wake them up.

Closing his eyes Haemir feels for the strange presence out there ... somewhere in the Sargrass, homing in on the feeling he draws power from it and feels the very cracks of reality split and a drop of Woldsblood from the Realm of Shadows seep into the physical Wold, he gently draws energy from it and then focuses back on the real world. (Concentration check:20 succeeds Vs DC:11 refreshing spells with no adverse effects).

Caelwyn listens carefully to Grindar's story, as well as Bigby's statement in support of the half-orc. He gives a wry smile. "I was careless in how I watched, it seems. Do not take it personally, Grindar. Most of my encounters with orcs, half or otherwise, have been less than pleasant - the same can be said of drow. However, I realize that, somewhat like me, you are a child of two worlds - neither wholly one nor the other. I understand what it is like to be a bit of both, but fully accepted by neither. If your actions match your fine words, I'm hope we will get along just fine. I already appreciate your assistance back at the halfling camp."

When morning arrives, and with it the unknown assailants, Caelwyn is tired enough to sleep through the initial noise. Perhaps he is awakened by the din Haemir is making, or by a comrade shaking him? (Perception 8).

Sol awakens to the ruckus, and sits bolt upright. He climbs to his feet with an odd level of grace, and he himself even seems a little shocked by how awake and alert he is. He smiles at Xel'Aw, as he sees the elf approaching him, but waves him off politely before calling out to Xel'Aw as he picks up his Quarterstaff.

"This sounds like it is going to be a lot of fun..."

He quickly glances around to see if anyone is still asleep, and if they are he rushes over to them and tries to stir them from their slumber.

'Lil's eyes flutter awake. She sighs.

"I dunno bout the rest of you, but I'm gettin' real sick of folks waking us up." She reaches over and grips Ramona's shaft, using it to stand. With a grunt, she lifts the thing and rests it on her shoulder. She shoos Fand off Caewlyn's face, then takes his hand and starts pulling him to his feet. Hopefully he'll be awake when he gets there.

"Come on, pretty boy. We got visitors."

Haemir starts up, but then seems to be smiling and petting whatever creature has run up his sleeve. Fand wakes Caelwyn unceremoniously, perhaps enjoying the task just a little too much. Noting the intruders, he begins banging a pot to wake the others, after hurriedly drawing some Woldsblood to regain his energy.

Xel'Aw awakens to the ruckus caused by Haemir and Fand's startlement, but sees that Haemir is actually ok. He stares off into the darkness to see what this new threat might be. With his superior darkvision, he can see that the intruders are quite varied, mostly dwarf sized, short and broad shouldered, with a few human sized and others mixed in the lot. They seem to be stumbling through the undergrowth and dark.

Grindar rolls to his feet with the reflexes of the battle-trained, but realizes that he has no time for the armor and equips himself as best he can. As the figures approach, he too can start to make out some of the features that Xel'Aw noted.

Bigby Wolfgang are also quickly awake, and Bigby starts to don armor before realizing that he doesn't have enough time. He does note that there is plenty of grass all around to enable an entangle, once he gets a better fix on where most of the approaching figures are positioned.

Sol calls out some encouragement to Xel'Aw and readies for a fight, while 'Lil wisecracks and gets ready to crack some noggins.

Out of the darkness you hear some gasps, and a voice calls out in Common, "Och, is it you? Thank Domi, we are saved!" As the shapes move closer in the dim light, you can now begin to make out a ragtag band of dwarves, humans, and maybe some others, some leaning on others for support, and you occasionally catch a glimpse of the Duke's colors among them.

False alarm Bigby thinks to himself. He looks to the half orc and surface drow and tells them, "they're with us." He looks to the party of dwarves and points at the two new friends and tells them, "they're with us." and then remembers the manfri, "them too." Bigby had done enough diplomacy for the day he had decided. It's good to try new things.

Bigby attempts to sense motive for why 'Lil would look to the sky (hoping he could help her) and fails. (sense motive 5) " they're out there not up there," Bigby says outloud to 'Lil, thinking she's looking for enemies somehow in the sky. Oblivious to her motive he does not use his survival to check the time of day. After seeing that 'Lil moves on to heal the party, Bigby decides to do something to help as well.

Bigby considers creating water with a spell but remembers what was said about water drawing attention.
Instead, he decides to attempt to draw the water from mid-stalk of the Purple Grass to give water to any weary members. survival: 15. "anyone who has thirst drink from this." he hopes to continue to learn from the Manfri and of their ways. Bigby looks to Ahyoka, "am I doing this correctly Ahyoka?"

Xel'Aw who has not met this party before (or at least has no memory of such) remains suspicious and on alert, looking over the group and trying to sense their motives. (Perception 18, Sense Motive 12) He is able to make out individuals and their features, but if they're hiding something, the large number of people make it hard to really see an individual's motives. They seem, to him, like a band of people ambushed and running from a fight they need recovery from.

"Do not worry, I believe they are people seeking help, not battle. Which I must say is quite a boon given the last few encounters we have had with folk here in the Sargrass."

"What do you need? How can we help?"

He remembers he has the Fruit Rolls, (25 of them, each acting as a Goodberry, per the spell) and gets the bag out offering them to those who might be hungry and tired in the approaching group.

Xel'Aw has not met these people before, and looks them over suspiciously before concluding that they are refugees, not foes. Sol agrees and offers the newcomers some very nourishing Fruit Rolls, which they wolf down hungrily and thankfully. (You have 5 Fruit Rolls left.)

'Lil also decides that these are not foes, and invites them to come forward and be healed. As a wave of healing energy rolls off of her, you can see some of the limping or half-carried figures visibly straighten and seem to have benefited. Caelwyn moves forward to help as well, while 'Lil and Grindar determine that it is about 6am.

Haemir recalls that there were a few non-dwarves aboard the Nixie Queen during your journey, and even recalls a few of these faces as ones you have seen before, but not been directly introduced.

Bigby helps make sure that everyone is introduced, and begins to pass on some of the survival skills that you have already learned. He is successful in drawing water from the Purple Grass, and showing how it is done.

The newcomers, dirty, bloody, and tired, but now well fed, watered, and healed, have some terrifically bad news to pass along. They are colonists from the Nixie Queen, and believe they may be the only survivors, other than yourselves, from that vessel. A tough looking dwarf with black hair divided down the middle by an ugly scar introduces himself, and tells some of the tale. "Broag, Broag Ironshield, at your service. We've been following your trail since, well, whatever happened back at the base camp. Praise Pantheon for your cart tracks or we might not have found you at all. That and the blazing beacon of a village that you left in your wake. It seems that it has been a day and night of fire and death all around. Taggert there (pointing to a tall, skinny human with a charmingly lopsided smile) proved himself useful rigging up some slings and crutches for the injured. Ah, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Something or a lot of someones fell on the camp during the middle of the night. 'Twer a swirl of fire, screaming everywhere, and hard to know what was even going on at all. Tried ta fight, but could never even tell who the enemy was in all the confusion. In the dawn light, he seems to redden in anger at the very thought.

Another dwarf, a redheaded woman, picks up the tale in a surprisingly high-pitched voice. "We all did, but it was for naught. Some of us were able to escape the encampment with what little we could grab, but otherwise it is all gone. The whole camp, and the ship too, burned to ruin. And bodies, oh the bodies everywhere. I've never seen such a ghastly thing, and hope never to again." She looks down in painful remembrance, a shadow crossing her mien.

A gnome picks up the tale, introducing himself as Sprocket Gearhead. "It is as Smithira says, all were lost, all but those who you see before you. It's enough to make you doubt your faith, I must tell you, which is a terrible thing for a clergyman to think, much less say."

The whole group stand around in grim shock, seemingly at a loss for further words. The sun has risen, but it is a dark, dark day.

He raises his head and surveys the survivors. "Your tale is a grievous one, friends. A heavy blow has been dealt to our cause today, and we mourn the loss of so many friends and comrades. We will take the proper time to honor them" He raises his voice slightly more. "But take heart! We must not give in to despair! You have escaped, and made it to us - as long as we have life and each other, there is hope! Domi will not forsake us! We will survive!" (Diplomacy 13)

Bigby listens to their tale and is moved deeply by their trials. Bigby says outloud, taking it all in, "this is what is left of our pack??? And the druid ship has burnt down? We had just finally seen some glimmer of hope with the Manfri to teach us the Sargrass ways and now our pack has been attacked. In the midst of life, we are in death." Bigby pauses for a second out of respect for the fallen and for the seriousness of all that he has heard.

Bigby thinks for a moment, gathers his composure and decides to say, "We are glad you found us and sad to hear of your trials. Come we will be heading to Rattledam. The Manfri are natives here and say that we can find solace and protection there. Let's go there and lick our wounds, and learn of their ways so that we can be better prepared. We are survivors. We must press on so that our pack did not die in vain. We live another day to honor them." diplomacy: 8.

This is the way that the words sounded in Bigby's head. Perhaps it really sounded like, "everyone dies...lets go... we survive"

Caelwyn's head drops for a moment in the face of this calamity, but soon his chin comes up, and with some help from Xel'Aw and the others, make a stirring oration. The refugees gamely try to put on a smile, so it must have had some good effect. But you can still see the uncertainty and fear behind the smiles. (They do not need any additional healing after the previous channels, but appreciate the offer.)

'Lil chastises herself with feelings of regret that the party was not in the camp to protect it. It is going to be hard to shake that feeling of remorse, even if she was sent by the expedition leaders to deal with the halflings. Speaking of the leaders, Haemir asks about them, but they have not been seen and are assumed dead with all the rest. Mahyawu and Ahyoka are as grief-stricken as the rest of you, and have no idea what might have done this. "With all the mutations and change, things are no longer as they once were."

Sol looks back down the path and asks whether they might have been followed. No one has seen any pursuit, but who knows?

Bigby and Grindar invite the newcomers to join you in your quest to reach Rattledam.

The refugees nod glumly, but it is obvious that they do not have the stamina or heart to move on yet. They have been up all night, following your trail, and you do not think they are in any shape to carry on yet. Mahyawu suggests that you continue to camp while they recover from the ordeal, and head on in the morning.

What do you do to survive in the meantime? The refugees did not bring enough food…

Xel'Aw feverishly scrawls into his stationary for a bit, lost to the world, after a few minutes, he produces a block schedule:

"With this, Grindar and I will always have an escort that you all trust, the casters get uninterrupted sleep, no one does more than 4 hours of a watch, gets 4 hours for eating and whatever else they want, and the only hours that have a single guard are the 3rd, 4th and 5th hours when most of the camp is awake and working, and just after the middle night when our spell casters are awake and studying. That will be, admittedly, the most dangerous hour, but both the wolf and Bigby will be there, then Fand and the spell casters will watch till morning. Any questions? Concerns?

Xel'Aw hums merrily to himself during his watch (Perception 23). While the colonists eat, he regales them with an epic poem (oration 9) which the dwarves heckle him throughout. He mutters, "I should read the room better before selecting my piece."

Mahyawu and Ahyoka are quite willing to help you and the other newcomers learn to forage and hunt here on the fringe of the Sargrass, although they strongly suggest that no one go out alone. Bigby and Grindar are very successful in catching a brace of small mammals that lurk in the shade of a particular fern-like shrub, while the others learn to dig up a pulpy root vegetable with an unpronounceable name. The two together make for a tasty stew that helps keep spirits from falling to low.

Haemir strikes up a conversation with the colonists, and learns a little about their backgrounds and trades. Smithira is a handy carpenter, if a bit quiet. Sprocket is a priest of the Gods of Wold, while Broag is a guard and warrior. Taggert seems to be more of a dilettante jack of all trades, who seems to have taken a bit of a shine to 'Lil. A deep voiced dwarf aptly named Gruff is a blacksmith, but seems at a loss without his hammer and anvil.

By the time evening comes, Xel'Aw comes up with a watch schedule that meets with general approval, and you are able to settle in for the night. But not before he regales you all with an oration of How the beautiful slender elves saved the world while all the other oafish clods mucked about in confusion to a polite but stony-faced dwarven audience.

Despite all this, you survive the night. A few creatures ventured near enough to be heard, but not seen. Your company must have been large enough to scare them off.

With the morning, Mahyawu is ready to lead you deeper into the interior, in search of the ruined city of Rattledam. He asks that some of you be the pathbreakers, and suggests that you set a marching order to protect the less well-prepared colonists. Broag can help with the guarding, if someone will loan him a weapon. It's already getting hot.

Bigby and Wolfgang are excited to have hunted and caught something. Bigby looks over to Grindar after catching their meal and he nods approvingly. "Good hunting," he says to Grindar. Bigby feels good to have contributed to helping the party's spirits from falling too low.

Bigby contributes to the new watch schedule set in place by Xel'Aw. There may have been some howling but nothing that lasted too long to keep anyone up.

Bigby and Wolfgang will take one of the east side as suggested by Xel'Aw. this guy is clever, Bigby thinks to himself. Bigby and Wolfgang are ready to move on.

When finding your way through the mists of Elsewhere the toughest part was staying focused, after all it is easy to end up in the wrong place. A mere thought or a random memory and - well you could find yourself just about anywhere. Haemir recalled more than one occasion when he had ended up in an embarrassing situation, but with his mind already straying he caught himself and smiled, realising that remembering itself was a distraction. 'Now where was I? Ah yes. This looks good'...

In some respects it was probably easier for a traditional spell caster who stuck to a formula, procedure, none of this flying by the seat of his pants, but hey until recently that had never been his approach and even becoming a mage - he hadn't done that the traditional way either. Shaking his thoughts away he re-focused on his goal and moved on through Elsewhere till he reached a door. It was just as he remembered and he opened it stepping in.

Despite the clank and squeal as the huge oak door swung open the man at the desk didn't look up, seemingly oblivious he carried on muttering to himself and scrawling away on a parchment. Haemir stepped in and looked around the room, a cat was curled up on some books and he walked over to stroke it before clearing his throat.

looked up and squinted as if trying to focus on whoever was disturbing him. Fixing Haemir with a 'who are you?' look he frowned as if trying to place the face. It took Haemir a second to realise, "Ah yes, please forgive me", with a small amount of concentration his form shimmered and changed, the dark skin replacing itself with a more familiar pale one, the hair changing back to blue - till he resembled his old self.
"Professor Haemir Farydark, one of the people that took your oath and now works for the Duke within the Sargrass Plains" he waited for the information to sink in and when he noticed the recognition on the seneshals face he continued.
"Please forgive my interruption, this is a dream but you will remember this when you awake. Once again I am sorry for the intrusion but I do not know of any other way to communicate with you" he waited until he spotted Nokter eyes widen briefly before understanding sank in. From Haemir's perspective dream Nokter's image sharpened and he knew the priest was paying full attention. It was great dealing with professionals, none of that screaming or disbelief. A nod told Haemir he was ready to listen.

"The expedition has not gone to plan, the ships separated and we lost one in the ice. After meeting the Dre Moria elves we were given passage through their territory and landed on the outskirts of the plains. The Nixie so far as we know is the only ship to have landed. On our first night the camp was attacked by cannibal halflings, despite repelling them several dwarves were taken and in the morning we set off to retrieve them. After doing so we were met by the remainder of the Nixie crew as they had been attacked again by something else. We now number under thirty. Askel Sturmsen and Signi Harvaldar are both presumed dead. We have met two new adventurers, a Drow named Xel'Aw and a ranger half-orc named Grindar and have made contact with the Manfri, who have been very helpful. We are making our way to the old Rattledam under their advisement to see if we can settle there. We lost virtually everything except our weapons. I am sorry to bring such grave news, but all is not lost. We are adapting, surviving and working on securing a base as per the original orders. As you are no doubt aware this is a one way communication, such is the way of dreamwalking. I will contact you again when we have more information" with that the elf bowed and let the dream dissolve.

Sitting up back in the camp Haemir nodded to the blue parrot sat on his chest guarding him - indicating it was done. Fand nodded back and flapped away and they both took their place on watch.

Throughout the day Haemir takes up his allocated place in the group and stays alert (Perception:20 & Fand:22)

Sol takes his watch, and during his morning shift (the hour he is alone) he starts to begin writing down the names of any of the colonists? Refugees? He isn’t sure what to call them, however, he dutifully notes down their names and jobs, and any additional skills they may have, Thai distracts him from his watch as he loses himself in the comfort of booking and census taking.

He also appreciated having someone else to share in the hunt. so this is what friendship could be like. It's tough to be hopeful when Bigby was so practical (he would try to learn to expect the best and prepare for the worst, instead of simply just expecting the worst to happen).

Xel'Aw takes his profession time making inquiries about the camp for traits and skills of the survivors, gathering information where he can (19). If Rattledam is to become a settlement, they will need a lot of labor types. He tries compiling a list of the assumed necessary skills and formulating a few plans based on possible conditions of the dome city when they arrive. He surveys the survivors asking about their stone masonry skills, their crafting skills, and their hunting skills. At meals, he compares his notes with Haemir, offering up his journal directly but does not request Haemir's in turn.

During his watch, he finds himself somewhat distracted laboring over who he is and how he came to this situation. He expects to find clues in his journal, but the apprehension of his peers at his racial heritage makes him stop and rather than read to learn more, he wanders about the perimeter of the camp lost in thought (perception 8) and fails to even remember to take off his glasses as darkness descends.

In the morning, as they travel, he continues watching the roads but trusts Grindar ahead to be a better scout than he could be. Whereas the party is already clamorous by virtue of size alone, Xel'Aw attempts to teach the convoy a traveling poem that measures their steps, breathes, pace, and keep up their spirits or at least keep their thoughts on travel rather than the events that harrowed them (oration 25).

Bigby and Wolfgang take their place in the column, as designated by Xel'Aw. Haemir also takes his place, after relating that he has sent a dream message back to Father Labeo in Hook City, notifying your employers of the recent turn of events. Caelwyn
also takes up a guarding position over the column.

Sol and Xel'Aw take a closer accounting of your companions, discovering that you have a total of 22 colonists, plus your party and the two manfri. They learn that the group has a pretty good range of skills, thank Domi! Talking to the manfri, they also learn that the dome is made not of stone but of woven grass. Stone is quite rare in the Sargrass, but the grasses are plentiful and useful.

Grindar joins Bigby in satisfaction over their successful hunt, and takes point on the journey. The latter also provides a very thankful Broag with a spear, and the fellow takes a few practiced moves that show he knows which end it the business end.

When the column gets moving in the morning, it is with a bit of renewed hope fueled by Xel'Aw's inspiring oratory. At Mahyawu's direction, you strike off in a westerly direction, through gradually denser undergrowth and grasses. After about a half day of slogging progress, the characters out front call a halt when they notice a metallic gleam coming from with some shrubbery about 60 feet ahead of the party.

Sol will nod at Grindar's request, and speaks the arcane words, and makes the hand gestures, the final hand gesture placing his hand open palmed and fingers splayed out onto Grindar's chest, in a moment he is surrounding in magical armour of sheer Force.

"Corbin, you go too." he whispers into his cloak.

He takes Corbin out of some inner pocket of his clothing and lets the Raven fly up after Fand, but then splitting off to get a better angle. ((Perception for Corbin : 9. This bird is apparently blind :P))

Caelwyn, unable to see much up ahead, suggests sending in the winged scouts. Haemir dispatches Fand to do some aerial reconnaissance. Sol sends Corbin out as well, and armors up Grindar for a closer look. Xel'Aw chips in by buffing Grindar with some Tauric magic. 'Lil keeps a sharp eye out to the rear of the column, but does not see anything threatening back that way.

Fand reports back that there seems to be a metal-armored, man sized body tangled up in the brush ahead. It is prone and unmoving. Corbin helpfully chimes in, "Shiny!" There are also a few small (maybe 6" diameter) holes pockmarking the ground around the body, all within 15-20 feet of it.

Grindar is able to move forward to about 30 feet from the body. He can see it more clearly from this angle, and the open face of the helmet reveals a human skull staring back at him, still unmoving. He cannot see the holes in the ground from where he is, due to the angle and the intervening foilage.

Do you move forward, either singly or en masse? Anything else you would like to do, either before or after moving up?

"No that will not work. I am neither strong, nor stealthy enough to help remove the body without alerting whatever it is. Neither do I have the skills to track the group towards Rattledam if we get separated. However, I feel Lil makes a good point, the way we treat the dead is important. Even more so out here, we need to keep our, well I would say humanity but we have more races than just humans. We need to keep our kindness up. The body should be laid to rest."

After some deliberation, 'Lil leads the heroes to decide that the body can't just be left without proper rites, in addition to some potentially mercenary motives to check things out. You have after all been hired to deal with such things hereabouts! Haemir feeds the latter motivation by noting that the scale mail on the figure radiates magic. The manfri are unfortunately not able to shed any light on the likely inhabitants of the holes in the vicinity, although Bigby and they deduce that it might be some sort of vermin, snakes, insects, or some such burrowing creatures. Mahyawu tells Haemir that the ruins of Rattledam are still more than a day away, so it will not be practical to quickly take the colonists there before investigating.

In the end, Caelwyn, 'Lil, Bigby, and Grindar advance carefully to get a closer look at the situation, while the others prepare to provide assistance and protect the colonists. You find that the holes are randomly distributed in about a 15 to 20 foot radius around the body. (You may make a survival check to reveal more about the possible inhabitants, now that you are observing the holes from close up.)

The body itself is snagged in some foliage that has grown up around and through it, but can be easily removed in a round if you like. There is no flesh remaining on the skeleton, which is bleached where the sun has struck it. What are you going to do with the body and its armor?

Caelwyn wisely suggests that you remove the body intact, and sort out the armor and burial later. Grindar agrees and helps out. As you remove the body and armor from the undergrowth, you notice that there are many small dimples in the ground around each of the holes. You still aren't sure what made the holes, but maybe they have lots of spindly round legs that would make such marks?

There is also something around the neck of the body, on a chain. Make a religion DC 5 check Highlight to display spoiler: {It is a plainly wrought holy symbol of Pantheon.}

The body is now free and can be carried away. Haemir has moved up to within 30 feet of the party 'muscle' surrounding the body. The others are hanging back, ready for trouble. So far nothing has appeared from the holes…

Caelwyn and Grindar are able to get a good grip on the body, with 'Lil holding back some of the foliage to ease the way. As the exfiltration team nears the edge of the area pockmarked with holes, you hear a rustling coming from below, immediately followed by an enormous swarm of oversized ants that come boiling out of the holes. Most of you are just out of the area of the swarm, but Grindar is caught in the swarm and instantly covered with biting ants, rending his flesh grievously. (Grindar takes 14hp of damage)

The ant swarm covers an area 10' by 10'. Caelwyn, Bigby, and 'Lil are adjacent to it, Haemir is 15' away from the edge of the swarm, and the rest of the caravan is 45' from the edge. The tiny ants continue to swarm Grindar and the area just behind and around him.

Judging from the way the ants came out of the holes, they probably move at about the speed of an unencumbered human. There might be way to drive them off, or clear them off of a swarmed individual. (Feel free to make knowledge nature checks, or try other things that occur to you. You know that Tiny creatures have no reach, so typically they wouldn't get attacks of opportunity if you leave their square.)

Can you save Grindar? Escape with the loot? Protect the colonists?

Haemir mutters and throws what looks like ground chalk in to the air... red, yellow, and blue powder form in to a cloud and with a flourish and wave the powder flashes in to a bright rainbow of light explodes towards the swarm - backing up as the spell completes.

Grindar tries to brush the ants off as Bigby suggested, but without some help from his friends, he can't seem to get them all off. (rolled a 14, and needs to beat DC17, +2 per assistant, so need two helpers to make it 18) He does run over to 'Lil when she calls and thanks her for the healing and asks for the help he needs to get the ants off him. As he is moving towards 'Lil, he will draw his quarterstaff, since Bigby said blunt weapons are more effective verses the ant swarm than slashing weapons.

Haemir casts a spray of magical colors at the ant swarm, but the mindless little devils pay it no heed. He backs up to relative safety and reconsiders his life choices.

Bigby backs up a little but while his mind whirls and recalls some key information about these kinds of perils, and alerts the party that many of their weapons will be less effective than normal. He yells to Grindar that he needs to get out of the ants and somehow brush off the ones clinging to him.

'Lil encourages Grindar to move out of the ants to be healed. Grindar does so, and tries to swat at the ants with his staff, but finds that he is too preoccupied with removing the clinging, stinging ones to make an effective attack. (OOC: The DC17 Reflex save actually requires an action, which I forgot to mention in my email.) Grindar is healed for 9 HP of damage, thank Domi.

Once Grindar is out of the main swarm, Caelwyn and Sol are able to help free him from the clinging ants that he carried away from the swarm. Once dislodged, they scatter in all directions rather than rejoin the main mass, which seems slightly diminished by their loss.

Xel'Aw keeps the colonists' spirits up with a timely army ant marching song, doing his best to interpret what is going on.

(Note that you originally spotted the armor from 60' away, and much of the party is now only 15-30 feet away after retreating. So everyone has some sense of what is going on.)

You hear Mahyawi speaking in a loud, clear voice and as he points his hand at the swarm, a rush of air sweeps into the ants, knocking half of them well out into the greenery, from which they do not return. The remainder, however, advance on Wolfgang and Bigby, who apparently did not retreat far enough, and engulf them. (Wolfgang takes 16hp of damage and Bigby takes 12hp of damage, and both are covered in the clinging ants. As before, you can use a standard action to take a DC17 reflex save to remove the ants once you leave their space.)

The remaining ants are now concentrated in Wolfgang and Bigby's squares. What will happen now?

Xel'Aw uses his knowledge of nature (24) to quickly determine what flavor ants might like. He flourishes wildly as if performing a massive spell, but it is just an act of prestidigitation. With the end of the flourish, he reaches down and grabs as much dirt as he can grasp and picks it up, flavoring the dirt. Then he throws the flavored dust into the swarm ahead of him.

Wolfgang somehow shakes the ants off of him like a dog shaking off water during his bath time. Bigby on the other hand thinks to himself not like this...can't go out like this. On the other hand Bigby thinks to himself, atleast they will eat every part of me. It's what I would have tried to do to my kill. Wolfgang will run as far away as he can from the remainder of the ants.

Grindar is torn, on the one hand he sees his friend in the same condition he was just in, and it looks like he is worse off the Grindar was, and on the other hand, the swarm is acting relentlessly, putting his friends and the colonists in further danger, and he feels the need to put it down. In the end, Grindar falls back on the familiar, and moves towards the swarm, making a tow handed attack with his quarterstaff.

Sol will again attempt to help Bigby get the ants off.

He continues brushing the ants off and tries to keep ahead of the swarm as well so they don't engulf him as well. It seems they do a lot of damage and he is not a tough person.

Assuming Bigby is moving toward them out of the swarm, Caelwyn will come alongside him as he runs and lay on hands to heal him (heals 2 points of damage). As he does this, since he has to physically touch Bigby anyway, he will try to brush some of the ants off him as they move out of the swarm together.

Xel'Aw remembers a trick he heard in an old story, and tosses a handful of meat-flavored sand into the swarm. It does seem to pose a bit of a distraction for them. (Xel'Aw earns one hero point for a clever idea, if he isn't already maxed out at 2 hero points for his level)

Grindar has to decide between subtley and smash, choosing the latter, swatting the ant swarm for 7hp of damage.

Bigby Wolfgang run out of the main swarm, with the latter managing to shake off his tormentors. Bigby is not so fortunate, despite help from Sol. 'Lil comes over to help, casting a cure light wounds on Bigby for 7 hp of healing. Caelwyn also comes over to help, healing an additional 2hp to Bigby.

Haemir tries a telekentic fist, but can't find a good target in the swirl of combat.

Between the gust of wind, Grindar's staff work, and the dissipation due to clinging ants being carried off, the swarm is now down to one 5' patch, which regrettably is still swarming on Bigby. The swarm does 9hp of damage to Bigby, which is not enough to bring him down thanks to the timely healing from his friends.

I'm not the DM, but I'd think that since channel energy won't bring dead ants back to life, it shouldn't heal the swarm.

Xel'Aw rushes into the swarm and hoping against hope that the ants don't turn on him, but he remembers how to cast a spell for curing light wounds and wonders how much else he may have forgotten. Bigby jumps off Wolfgang and it is evident the wolf is suffering. Being closer, he touches the wolf first (healing 10hp!!!) and prepares to cast again on Bigby.

The party rallies to Bigby's assistance, and manages to free him from the clutches of the clinging ants and move away. The few remaining ants scurry away in all directions, having lost cohesion. With a last rustling scuttle, your foes melt into the nearby foilage. You are left standing near the column of colonists, who seem both surprised and gratified to not have been devoured in a tidal wave of biting insects. Taggert, the charismatic human jack of all trades, leads a genuine if tattered round of applause for their saviors. You still have the skeletal remains with the magical scale mail and holy symbol of Pantheon.

(There was a tremendous flurry of party healing there at the end. Feel free to retcon the spell usage (in reverse posting order) if it was too much. I'm actually quite sick this week, and am too mentally tired to do the math tonight. Carl, I agreed with your interpretation of the effect of the channel on the dead ants.)

Do you wish to move a short distance away and conduct the memorial ceremony for the body, or take it with you as you resume your move towards Rattledam? Anything else you would like to do in the first hours after the fight?

Bigby's very grateful for his pack coming to his rescue and attempts to compose himself as he realizes he even jumped off Wolfgang. He must have thought he was going to die. "I don't want to see another ant again in my lifetime" Bigby confesses. "Take the body with us, get away from here. We can bury him later." Bigby heads back to the caravan and says, "because that's how you get ants, am I right." He then moves on like nothing happened, hopping back onto Wolfgang.

Xel'Aw chants under his breath, touching each of his fingers together against each other at the tips then his pointer fingers to each of his eyes, thus casting Barnum's Appraisal on himself and attempts to identify the armor (26) and then in a much simpler casting detects magic to determine its qualities (spellcraft 28).

Caelwyn and Bigby, sobered by their recent experience, suggest taking the body and moving on. 'Lil and Sol agree, and Grindar and Haemir respectfully places the body into the cart. The holy symbol, pitted and tarnished with age, has little tangible value. Xel'Aw is able to determine that the scale mail has a +1 enchantment.

Your weary and wary band sets off yet again for Rattledam. 'Lil wonders aloud whether everything here wants to kill you, and the consensus seems to be 'yes'! Despite this gloomy outlook, you make it safely through the rest of the afternoon.

An hour before dusk, you crest a rise to a breathtaking vista. Spread out just beneath you is a multicolored sea of grasses. The occasional patches of Sargrass you have encountered thus far pale in comparison to this unending mass of tall blades rustling in the slight wind. It is both beautiful and daunting. Make a perception check vs DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {Far out in the plain is a patch of unmoving darkness, like a gap in the waving grasses.}

How does one avoid becoming lost in such a place? That is, assuming one figures out how to move through it in the first place. Does sunlight even reach the ground? These questions and more are on your minds as Mahyawu declares that this is a good place to camp for the night.

(perception: 20) In case Haemir didn't specifically ask the Manfri, Bigby will second the question to specifically to Mahyawi about the dark patch.

As for hunting...(survival 17)...Bigby seems to smile a bit at the suggestion that Grindar makes. yes, let's hunt...but let's avoid holes in the ground thinking of ants...Bigby shudders for a moment, because that's how you get ants.

She's totally down with camping out, though. "I don't think tromping through that at night would be a good idea at all."

She really won't be any help hunting, so she doesn't. She has muscles, though. She pitches in wherever she can do the most good.

Xel'Aw takes in the plane and writes some notes about colors and estimates of the vastness, but it is hard to compare. He notices nothing in particular (perception 12), and plans to spend the night with his usual shift (perception 10) and his profession time looking for better marching songs in his notes.

Caelwyn, unable to make anything out beyond the beauty before them, pauses a while to admire it. There is something dauntingly beautiful about this terrain, but also overwhelming. It almost makes one feel exposed.

He takes his usual shifts that night, keeping an eye out for any danger. In between shifts he sleeps, prays to Domi, and speaks with those nearby about how they are doing. If any colonists are in need of healing he will assist them.

Haemir's sharp eyes spot a dark patch out in the Sargrass, and he points it out to the others before inquiring into its meaning. Sol darkly but not unreasonably opines that it doesn't look like something good, but Ahyoka smiles and says, "On the contrary, that is your new home. The darkness is a gap in the Sargrass where Rattledam once stood. The old town was destroyed by a flood of Woldsblood in the calamity that was the destruction of the old Sargrass Plains. And even today, no Sargrass will grow there, making it a good place for outsiders such as yourselves to once again live in this place."

In the remaining hours before darkness, Grindar, Bigby, and Haemir manage to yet again forage and hunt successfully, contribution nicely to the group's provisions. Bigby is happy to report that they found no ants along the way.

Xel'Aw and Sol make some notes and observations about your new surroundings, while 'Lil focuses on more mundane matters of survival and Caelwyn tends to the colonists.

As night falls, you take your turns on watch. There are occasional bestial sounds in the far distance, but nothing disturbs your camp. The susurration of wind through the nearby grasses is nearly like the sea itself, with its constant rise and fall. Despite the dangers you know you face there, the sound of the Sargrass is perhaps…comforting.

With dawn, your little band of survivors begins to stir. The normal morning routine is brought to a halt by a sharp gasp from Mahyawu, perhaps the most alarm you have heard from him since you first met. Looking about, however, you see no immediate threat, and he quickly explains, "I am sorry, my friends. I have just learned that there is an emergency back at the manfri taudo, our village. I must return there at once! Ahyoka, you must remain here, and continue to guide these good folk to their new home. I am not sure what is happening at the taudo, nor how long it will be until I return. Until then, be strong, be good, and be safe. With that, he turns and walks into…nothingness, apparently dreamwalking away as if going for a morning stroll."

Ahyoka recovers from the surprise quickly, and attempts to ease any doubts you may have. "I know the way, fear not. Now, we are going to need to adapt our approach to accommodate the 'peculiarities' of the Sargrass. It is very difficult to move through, and we are not going to be able to bring the cart. I can grass chant to make a temporary path that you can follow in a column, and we should be able to reach Rattledam in a day. Otherwise, you will find your movement twice as difficult as normal. Any questions or other matters before we pack up and move out?"

Bigby thinks to himself, of course that makes sense where we are going now is the dark patch in the grass. "good luck Mahyawu. We hope to see you again."

"Ahyoka, can you teach me that grass chant? Is this chant something that we can learn?" Bigby wonders if as a druid he would be impeded by the grass and decides he will have to try it out another time since it won't help wolfgang or the rest of the pack.

Before sleeping Haemir heals Bigby (5 points). In the morning he moves away from the group and meditates (Concentration:24 Vs DC:11) safely succeeding to draw Wolds Blood & regain his spells.

Feeling refreshed he bids Mahyawu "Thank you and good luck" as he leaves and then suddenly shakes his head in disbelief, realising he forgot to ask Mahyawu why the book made his skin change colour. The morning light stings Haemir's eyes and he finds himself squinting far more than necessary, but as he packs his gear away he still notices that Grindar is injurered and offers to cure him (Healing 9 points).

Our new home is a dark patch in a sea of deadly grasses?

Regardless of how much sleep she got, 'Lil wakes dog-tired. She'd never left Hook City before this, and life outside the city was proving difficult. The thought of heading to Rattledam and settling it lifted her spirits a bit, though.

"Sounds like a good plan, Ahyoka. Lead the way!"

Grinda bids Mahyawu farewell, and then says, "What are we to do about the things in the cart?" "There is no way the cart will fit through the path Ahyoka is making for us". He then pulls out his spare winter blanket, lays the skeleton on it and wraps it up in the blanket as a makeshift body bag. He then gently lifts it a slings it over his shoulder saying, "Hopefully we don't run into any trouble, I would hate to have to drop this guy in order to fight".

Xel'Aw waves to the aethereal-like Mahyuwa and bids Ahyoka lead on.

Xel'Aw decides to spend his time marching to get to know his various peers. He approaches Bigby first and asks, "So, Bigby. Tell me about Wolfgang. I understand you're a druid, but how did you end up meeting? Just a chance encounter in the wood?"

Xel'Aw will probably probe into the backgrounds of everyone eventually - he seems the curious sort, but not in the same arcane ways as Sol. There is definitely arcane there, but his is a more personal interest in people and stories. And maybe something wrong, he says something in Aklo to no one in particular, Highlight to display spoiler: {"Bards, can't live with them, can't kill them when you're a good-aligned party."}

If they could read his thoughts, they would know Xel'Aw is nervous to approach Lil with probing questions of the her past because she smiles often, yet still seems angry. "Perhaps I'll ask her about that. Best to do the most unpleasant tasks first." But they cannot, and so he just seems to flit about asking questions to the various peoples in the column and keep a safe distance from Lil.

OOC: Going to start doing more PC-to-PC interaction in the down times and ask about histories and such as that's much more inline with bard-ing. If you have an idea, we can e-mail about the interaction in advance.

"I do not have any spells that would help... and well... I am not the most physically imposing fellow. A lot of my belongings are on the cart... would it be possible that someone could help me carry them? I could do, but I fear it would slow me down too much."
