DM RobC - "I will be at the chapel well before dawn" d100=6 ; Tuesday February 5th, 2019 4:23:58 AM
There is a general consensus that the day is done. Owen sets to making room for Isobel and Simon. It wasn't something he was planning when they last left so the quarters will probably need to be cleaned and arranged tomorrow to accommodate. James is able to find some extra blankets just in case.
It is decided that Fredorian will be left alone. For now.
Still, there is a nagging feeling that trouble may still rear it's head. Just to be on the safe side the party keep watch. The order (per wiki)... 20:00 - 22:00 : Owen 22:00 - 01:00 : Atlas, 'Neshi 01:00 - 04:00 : Elyngael, Khan Highlight to display spoiler: {Why is it that Elyngael requires little sleep?} 04:00 - 07:00 : Armand, 'Osul
There isn't a lot to report. The highlight probably being 'Osul seeing a dog trot about and lift its leg against a wagon before wandering off.
Armand and Osul are awake before the sun rises with everyone else still resting. Lilliput advised that she would be casting her spells right at first light. Best predictions are that the sun will be rising shortly after 6am.
What are the plans?
OOC: Please list any preparations you are making. Changing spells and such.

OOC: Spell list is updated for the morning.
Just prior to 4am, 'Osul gets up and streches from being a tiny hedgehog to being a medium human. He gathers everything together. He eventually leaves his room and heads up to meet Armand, quietly sharing with him his plan: While Lilliput prays to Alemi he will be meditating on their understanding of what is happening here to The Tree, and that we will be trying to determine the cause - walk the full base of The Tree and onto the lower branches, attempt communications with The Tree (and maybe The Sapling) for diagnostic purposes. I then have a step too far to take and try again if that was unsuccessful (all the while hopefully Lilliput and others will have commenced their healing). No, I'll spare you the details of that lunacy until I face it. Then, if we get past 'morrow's meditation without an answer or improvement, I'll recommend we get that painting and retrace The Tree's path back to the moot at the heart of The Wood. Ancient wisdom from his own kind...
Oh, look.. a dog... never mind.
Around half-past-four he casts Elf Vision, and an hour or so later he begs his leave with more than a little spare time, and makes his way to the chapel.

Atlas goes to bed early so that he can get up early and over to the Tree. He takes his turn on watch and then joins 'Osul, ensuring that they make it there on time.
Owen Marcellus (Weston W.) AC: 16/12/14; HP: 54/54; CMD: 17 Tuesday February 5th, 2019 3:57:54 PM
Owen prepares a different set of spells for his investigative efforts. He'll use Detect Magic and Detect Poison to investigate the suffering portions of the Tree and the things around it, buffing the party's Perception with the Minotaur version of Toros' Taur Try. He also plans to use Fly and Spider Climb as necessary to check out typically distant reaches of the Tree. Dispel Magic and Darkvision could also come in handy, as well as Owen's broad and deep Knowledge as a Loremaster.
Finally, Owen may be able to use the painting as a likeness to help him Scry on the other trees from the moot.
In any case, he accompanies 'Osul, Atlas, and the rest of the party as they meet with Lilliput and check out the Sapling.

After the ceremony with Lilliput Armand will find a place and then prepare to cast Commune: Deity answers one yes or no question per level. (page 257 of Core Rulebook). He turns to the party to explain. "I will be attempting to Commune with Lord Gagul. I should be able to ask 9 questions and get a yes or no answer. After that I intend to cast Divination which could give us some cryptic clue as to how to proceed as it will be more than a yes no answer. So if you can think of specific yes-no questions we need an answer to, let me know. Just to let you know I intend to ask Lord Gargul if this is the Tree's natural time to depart this realm."

The party wake up bright and early and ready for the new day. Hopefully with all the spells that are planned to be cast that some answers will be found.
Simon and Isobel are all still asleep. Isobel is lying on her side and smiling in her sleep. Simon is laying on his stomach, head turned with some saliva hanging out the side of his mouth. At least they don't snore.
The air is very fresh outside. It is not even day break and you can see some of the merchants already awake and preparing their stalls. You sleep and you might miss out on business I suppose.
The party all head towards the temple except for Elyngael and Khan who instead choose to explore around the base of the Tree.
------------------
Just as was told, Lilliput is already standing outside of the temple facing towards the horizon as the sun has only just started to peek out. She looks calm and well rested and to be honest, very happy. You can see her take deep calming breaths. This is the time of service for her. The time of day when she feels closest to Alemi.
"Friends!" she turns to see you approaching "Perfect timing."
Lilliput takes some incense from her pocket and lights it with a tindertwig. The smell is unusual but very pleasant and calming. Lavender, Sandalwood and a hint of Jasmine you suspect. Lilliput smiles and turns to face the rising sun once more.
"Now then. Alemi. Loving father of the Wold. I ask for your guidance. What is currently ailing the Tree of Parting?" Spellcraft DC14 Highlight to display spoiler: {She has cast a Divination spell.}
She stands still for some time, and then eventually smiles.
"To be honest I was not expecting a direct answer and Alemi doesn't disappoint. The spell is not definitive you see. Always in riddles, omens and rhymes. This was no exception. The words I heard were: 'Tarsier in treetop tells the true tale towards the Tree troubles'. Curious. I have not seen a tarsier for some time now, but who can say what lives high up there. I trust that will help you in some way"
------------------
There is quite a bit for Khan to take in. With such a large wagon there are so many smells about that it is hard to pick any as unusual. Mud, wood, perfumes, oil, leather, horses, people, hay, tea, smoke. He could be here all day without clear guidance on what to search for.
Elyngael combs the area but is still unsure what she is looking for. The merchants are laying their wares on tables and give friendly waves to the Warden. Some beckon her over to try and make an early morning sale.
The Tree however does look worse than it did yesterday. The effect on the leaves has noticeably spread and is covering a much wider area. It won't be long before all the lower leaves shrivel up. It has also started to slowly spread upwards. Hundreds (perhaps thousands) of shriveled leaves can now easily be seen without difficulty.
Elyngael: You are free to come up with a home however it is recommended you find a way to stay with the main party by claiming one of the rooms as your own, building an extension, etc. Having a separate building means splitting the party at times, creates two targets, and a few other difficulties such as setting watches. Not knowing what else to do, Atlas tags along with Armand. By the time they get back he's getting anxious and is looking forward to hearing the results of the spells.

Lilliput leaves the party to their discussion and heads into the Temple to prepare for the dawn worshipers.
Osul meditates and seeks wisdom from the Culverwood. He doesn't receive any per se but does feel his heart skip a beat or two. Weird.
Armand tries to Commune with His god: Gargul. He has a number of well thought out questions to ask, and he receives answers to each:
1 - Is this the natural time for the Tree of Parting to leave this realm of existence and join you? Unclear 2 - Will we find the tarsier that Lilliput's spell spoke of in the Tree of Parting? Yes 3 - Is there something sinister behind what ever is affecting the Tree of Parting? Yes 4 - Is what is causing the Tree of Parting to appear to sicken a mortal agency? Yes 9 - Do the Wardens of the Tree of Parting have enough ability to reverse whatever it causing the Tree of Parting to apparently sicken? If the source is found
Armand then follows up with a Divination. He isn't leaving anything to chance today! "What is the best course of action for the Wardens to take in order to cure the Tree of Parting?" "Find and guard the Tarsier
There is one other question he asks: what in the name of Gargul is a tarsier??? Osul and Owen are there to answer the question though. Both have heard of these little creatures and know quite a lot actually. They know so much that I'm just going to put this here. Elyngael draws a blank. This is an instance where the talky caster types might find something out.
Noone recalls seeing a tarsier in the Tree before, but these things are tiny and who knows what lurks in the upper branches. Ahh Mack. Where are you now? If the party do need to get up to the top of the Tree then they'll need to think of a way up there. Atlas is ready to just climb the thing.

Armand tells everyone of the questions he asked and the responses he received from Lord Gargul. He listens to 'Osul's and Owen's description of a tarsier. "So we're looking for a bird about the size of your fist somewhere in the Tree of Parting?" He takes a minute to think about the size and scope of the task. "Talk about your needle in a haystack."
"Any thoughts on how best to go about this task? What if there's more than one tarsier. Say you said they eat insects. I wonder if whatever is affecting the Tree is an insect infestation of some sort."
Armand waits to hear what the others think is going to be the best way to search for and capture this bird.

'Osul smiles - just a little. "Armand, no, it is a tree monkey, a bit like a lemur or a tamarind, but yes, about the size of your fist. One tarsier won't solve a bug infestation, but maybe they have a hidden tribe up there?"
"What we really need is for this foray up The Tree to not become public knowledge today. And we're going to have to befriend them, and find out how they operate, what threatens them, ... the sitting down and watching stuff."
He offers to fly to the top in air elemental form (not a bird of prey that they would instinctively fear) and get an idea of how many there are and their whereabouts - using Detect Animals or Plants from the top of the tree, and lower vantage points if required. If he happens across some he can hopefully establish a rapport. He asks if anyone wants to come along - it is an incredible view from up there.

Before he does that, however, he checks the shriveled portions of the Tree using Detect Magic and Detect Poison. (Aided by the Minotaur TTT for its perception boost.)
Owen then casts Scrying on the tarsier in question. Because we have secondhand knowledge of it, it gains +5 on its DC 20 Will save. If he sights the critter, he uses his knowledge of the Tree and of the way trees work to try to figure out its location. Knowledge (Local, Nature): 24, 23.

DM RobC - "Well, we've found them" Friday February 8th, 2019 6:00:46 AM
There is some back and forth as to what a tarsier is. Eventually is agreed that it is some kind of monkey. A very small one in fact.
How to find the thing is the next question.
Owen considers casting a scrying spell but something tells him that Osul may be in the right direction. He holds onto his spell just in case.
Osul has one direct idea. He turns into an air elemental and does a little scouting with a Detect Animals spell. It is a very long range spell and he is able to scan the tops of the tree quite quickly. He quickly detects a tarsier. Just one. One throughout the entire tree. It is in "normal" condition. Knowing exactly where it is he is able to look where he needs to. Osul can see a tiny house, no more that 5ft long, 5ft wide and 1ft tall made up of the living branches of the Tree itself. The house resembles a tiny log cabin, and there is just the tiniest smoke coming out of it’s little chimney.
It is quite high in the Tree though and surrounded by branches and leaves.
---------------
Neshi sets to searching around the base again, convinced there is more to find. There is no one spot in particular where the smell is stronger than any other. It emanates all around the Tree. Everywhere he looks. His casting of Detect Poison does turn up something. There is indeed a poison of some sort. (OOC: My apologies, Owen. I looked back and can see I overlooked your earlier casting.)

'Osul looks at the miniature log cabin, the smoke rising from the chimney... surely this is a sign of sentience. Maybe not that of the tarsier (or it likely would not have been found by the spell) but that opens a whole other potential issue. Surely this is not the doing of The Tree. ! ?
He brings his huge elemental form to rest over a few neighboring branches (40' long but only 12 lbs.!). He double-checks from his new position that the detection still places the tarsier on a line through the log cabin. When reassured he casts Speak with Animals: (duration 10 mins) "Is there at tarsier in the house?" "Are you well?" "I have no interest in harming you or your house, but I would like to discuss a matter that could affect both you and your home. Is this something you would like to talk about?" (I know, 'Osul will need to do most of the talking.) "Is something threatening you?" "My friends and I have been asked to find and guard you, but I am not clear from what. Do you know?" "Are you aware of the sickness afflicting the lower trunk and branches of The Tree?" "Do you know who or what is causing this?" By this point 'Osul is hoping to have seen the tarsier and had some time with it (gender unspecified). He attempts to better befriend and understand the creature. {Wild Empathy: 19, Sense Motive: 15}
After the initial exchange, he asks, "May I bring some friends to visit? They live in the tree, but mostly they are groundlings."
He advises in the form of a question that he may be a different shape when he returns, but he will return to this exact place. 'Osul then makes sure *he* can find these couple of branches again, before returning to the chapel, and, away from resident ears reports everything he found and heard, subject to the tarsier's answers.

Armand goes to find Neshi and the two set to looking around the Tree a little more. Neither have any idea what sort of poison they may be looking for. Osul - the huge elemental - parks himself near the small tree house and tries to communicate with the tarsier. He hopes it is in the house and can hear and understand him. He explains himself to be a friend, that everything is fine, and that it is safe to come out.
Almost immediately he sees a tiny head emerge from the house. Its eyes are huge compared to the size of its body. Despite seeing the speaking elemental it fully comes out of the house and grabs hold of a nearby branch to hang from and listen. The creature is about the size of your fist (when you normally have fists) and looks like a tiny monkey. It is most certainly a tarsier.
Osul asks if it knows what is happening with the Tree and whether he could bring some friends to visit. The tarsier cocks it's head to the side as Osul speaks. It blinks a few times and cocks its head the other way. "It a Warden? Wiz-Bang thinks yes. We speak other wardens?" the tarsier responds... in common. It's voice is quite high pitched though doesn't hurt your ears. The thing is downright cute.

'Osul is happy to carry Wiz-Bang safely to the chapel to meet the other wardens, if he agrees.
He cannot help but wonder if Wiz-Bang has been [i]Awakened[i], or in some other way (looks at the log/branch tree house) enchanted. He saves that question for later.

Atlas accidentally falls asleep to the buzz of activity in the background. He gently snores, dreaming about flying and strange furry monkeys called tarsiers. He realizes that he loves flying, but then the magic runs out and he finds himself falling. He gets a sense of dread as the group approaches and then jumps about 2 feet in the air as he wakes up.

"You know, it's a long shot, but most poisons affect a creature's ability." Armand goes to the base of the tree and casts RESTORATION. (eschew materials feat to the rescue). Target, creature touched, does a plant creature count, i.e. treants would count yes?. Armand is using this version of the spell - Restoration cures all temporary ability damage, and it restores all points permanently drained from a single ability score (your choice, Con maybe?). Granted this would be a temporary fix if it works, because the poison is still there and will start working again.
He turns to Neshi, "I'm not sure how that went. Maybe we should head back up to the others and see how things are progressing??

Im not sure myself Armand though if it has been introduced through the soil or water I wonder if a purify food and water spell would help? since that is the food and water for a tree?
Yeah we can head back to the trunk area, but I don't think It would be too good of an idea if I started trying to climb to find the tarsier. After all I do look a bit like a large predator......
DM RobC - "I hope this little creature has something to tell us." Tuesday February 12th, 2019 5:19:54 AM
Armand and Neshi try a few more things by the Tree. Armand wonders about a restoration spell. He knows it only affects creatures including the plant type ones. The Tree though is not a creature. A good thought though.
They eventually return to the others just in time to see Osul flying downwards. From the ground you can barely see any movement in the Tree however every now and then there is a slight twitch of a branch as he descends.
There is a rustle of leaves and then the tiny monkey like creature falls clear out of the Tree to land on Neshi's left shoulder! Before you can say anything he is already nestling up to you, head turned downwards and big eyes looking up at you. You can even hear a soft purring sound.
"Hello. I Wiz-Bang. You Wardens? Wiz-Bang come to try save the Tree." With his left hand he starts running his fingers through Neshi's hair and rubbing his face into her neck.
His common isn't fantastic but you get the gist of what he's trying to say.

'Osul returns to his natural shape.
"This is Wiz-Bang the tarsier. No, I did not hit my head on a branch while I was away. He lives high in the tree in a little house like a log cabin, formed from limbs of The Tree. It has a little chimney with smoke drifting from it and everything. No, I didn't consume any funny mushrooms while I was away. He came out from his home, and picked me in my air elemental form as a Warden, and asked if he could see us all."
He introduces the Wardens individually, and Lilliput (assuming she is not attending to others).

DM RobC - "Y-you can understand him too?" Wednesday February 13th, 2019 5:43:10 AM
Osul gives a brief rundown of what happened high in the Tree. Little house. Little chimney. Little occupant.
Owen takes a mental picture so as to share the story in detail later on. Wiz-bang looks to be in perfect health. There are no signs of an injury and you can't see any concealed tiny weapons.
Elyngael tries to act nicely towards Wiz-Bang and does what she can to make him feel comfortable. By the way he is nuzzling into Neshi you gather he is pretty relaxed already. Neshi may look and feel uncomfortable but Wiz-Bang seems oblivious to her unease.
Armand can't believe his ears. A talking tarsier. Huh. Either way, he decides to ask nicely what is going on.
Atlas though does something entirely unexpected and bows to the tarsier. Noone really say that coming. Wiz-Bang's eyes get even wider, and with his tail draped over Neshi's shoulder he reaches out a tiny paw in Atlas' direction. He clutches at the air indicating he wants to go to the burly fighter.
The party have plenty of questions.
"Wiz-bang here to help. Come to warn and help Wardens stop the Otaktay."
Wiz-bang lowers his head as he starts and for the first time doesn't seem happy and cute. "The poor ape Otaktay. Otaktay was the companion to the druid. The druid was not nice to Otaktay. Not nice at all. Hurt Otaktay. Oooh hurt the Otaktay badly." Wiz-bang’s eyes start to get a little watery and he sniffs deeply.
"Awakened the Otaktay though. Ooooh, mistake for the druid. Otaktay did kill the druid. The Otaktay then become a druid himself! Yes he did he did. But the Otaktay does not stop there. The Otaktay gather other apes. The Otaktay awaken them all! Otaktay awaken the Wiz-bang too" Wiz-bang smiles broadly once more though quickly frowns again.
"The Otaktay say to the apes that the people are bad. All the people! Very very very bad. Wiz-Bang think this to not be true. Wiz-Bang come to the Tree to warn the Tree. The Wiz-Bang want to be good!" Wiz-Bangs expression drops again "But Wiz-Bang too late"

DM RobC - "So that's what it takes to become a druid!" Thursday February 14th, 2019 5:38:51 AM
Atlas takes Wiz-Bang in hand much to Neshi's relief. The poor little guy hardly weighs a thing. You can feel his heartbeat racing. Probably normal for a critter of his size. Atlas asks about his role in the Tree pre and post being awakened "First time Wiz-Bang to Tree. Came here to help. Long way" Wiz-Bang closes his eyes and snuggles in to Atlas' arms. "Long way."
Neshi asks how Otaktay is responsible in all this. "Icky water. Very Icky. Otaktay made. Apes put on Tree. Icky" Wiz-Bang keeps his eyes closed but sticks out his tongue in disgust. "Bleh!"
"But Wiz-Bang too late. Tree already sick. Too late" Wiz-bang opens his eyes and looks sadly up at Atlas. "But Wiz-Bang might fix. The Otaktay made water but Wiz-Bang saw. Wiz-Bang show the Wardens. Maybe fix? Maybe fix Tree?"
"Apes follow the Otaktay of their choice. The Otaktay not 'control'. Wiz-Bang thinks the Otaktay tells not truths. Apes believe him though. Yes" Wiz-Bang tries to correct Elyngael "The Otaktay say all people like the druid. Say all the peoples are bad. Very very bad. Say that if Tree goes, peoples will all go. If the peoples don't go..." Wiz-Bang shudders in Atlas' arms.
Owen suggests scrying on Otaktay and Elyngael asks if Wiz-Bang can tell the party where to find him. It perks him up straight away and he starts wriggling "Wiz-Bang can help! Wiz-Bang can help! Take the Wardens! Take them!"
Armand makes an off the cuff comment about a hidden city but it gets the tarsier's attention. "Not city. Strong place. Strong place in the forest. Not the druids place anymore. Oh no." Highlight to display spoiler: {Had to google Gorilla Grodd. Nice!}

Yes, that is a path. Otaktay's companion was not a good person. I say companion because the moment you view your relation anything slightly more like Master-servant then the both of you are doomed, Owen. Casting Awaken on an animal you have ... wronged ... it is the action of someone with no interest in remaining in the world, even even less interest in going peacefully. The companion animal is no longer a companion, adding human intelligence to the animal cunning and ... a path far from mine."
"Speaking of my path, not to make this about me, I'm not convinced Wiz-Bang is talking about The Culverwood. Sure, I've heard rumours of other druids in The Wood, but nothing more than that. Never met one, never knowingly set foot in a place of strength. To me, the whole is the strength - much as it is here! But, at some point I would not mind testing the theory that I am the druid of The Wood. And that is almost certainly going to involve placing us in the place if not the time of the painting.", he states, pointing in the direction of the painting they brought back from the satyr of The Tree leaving The Moot deep in The Wood." "But as I was saying, I thought Wiz-Bang was saying that he would take us to the source of what made Otaktay's water so icky ... I mean, poisonous."
DM RobC - "Let's gather our gear and head out" Friday February 15th, 2019 6:09:08 AM "Culver forest! Yes" Wiz-Bang nods enthusiastically to Armand.
With introductions made and the destination known, the party agree that now is the time to leave. Wiz-Bang is quite excited about it all. Even though you'd think a tarsier would stay clear of a large cat like Khan, Wiz-Bang smiles and gives him a cute little wave.
Atlas notes that the party need to return to the house to grab their gear and it is probably wise to let James, Isobel, Simon, and perhaps a few others in the town know that you're about to leave again.
It's probably around 9am and the merchants are now all out to do business. People are walking about trying to get the freshest fruits and food of the day. No doubt this is the busiest time of day for trade. Well, except for the Triple-T that tends to get more business towards the end of the day.
Today's usual business though is disrupted by the arrival of a troop of all manner of primates. An ape, some baboons, and even a couple of orangutans. Troop being the collective mind you. They aren't actual troops but, uh, they do have bows strapped to their backs. They walk on all fours but stop in the middle of the market.
The ape stands upright and looks about. "Where is tarsier?" He bellows "We know he here!". The others start to slowly spread out and look about the stalls. "WHERE IS HE?!"
The traders are giving some confused looks but all keep nervously conducting business. The guy trading fruit though does look somewhat alarmed. He's either going to have a fantastic day or be ripped to shreds. Most start to slowly step back to give the monkeys some room. "No sudden moves" seems to be the unspoken rule.

"Excuse me. Is there a problem here?" He calls out to the apes. "This is a civilized area and you should be showing some proper manners. No need to go bellowing and acting like you own the place."
Armand waits for a response.

Owen mutters to the others, "You guys move out as quietly as you can. I'll try to distract the apes and then catch up."
As they get moving, he finds an out-of-the-way corner and uses a round of his Invisibility Field to draw his Rod of Silent Metamagic and cast Invisibility. He then casts a silent Fly and takes to the air. From that vantage he casts a silent Major Image (Will save DC 19) of the tiny tarsier at the southern edge of the market, using his knowledge of Nature and memories from his great moment of Perception earlier to replicate Wiz-Bang in detail, even (he hopes) down to sound and smell.
The illusory tarsier shouts "Oh no! Apes are after me!" and then leaps from the market out toward the plains. He springs from bush to bush, flower stalk to flower stalk, rustling the foliage as he passes. The illusion leads the apes (if they follow) southward and away from the Tree. Should they shoot arrows, the tarsier twists to dodge the ones that come near. Owen flies overhead and leads the wild tarsier chase onward, hopefully buying some time for the party.

Osul doesn't see any trouble nearby coming from any other direction fortunately.
Neshi distinctly doesn't like these newcomers/intruders. Elyngael draws her weapon and asks (taunts?) when so many monkey's learnt to talk.

"Circus performance? Heh heh. I like that" The lead ape snorts. He squints as she pulls out her bow. "Boys. Help people find their tickets"
There is a lot of whooping, squealing and screeching from the simians.
In the frenzy you see one of the orangutans actually cast a spell! The whole troop move a lot faster.
The baboons spread out immediately and move towards the nearby civilians: the traders and customers. Not one is coming at you. They have drawn small daggers and their intent is clear. One has already caught a man to the west. He's doing his best to defend both himself and the woman behind him. The baboon slashes with its knife and cuts deeply into the man's arm (Hit AC23).
The other orangutan looks to be casting a spell now as well.
The lead ape doesn't hesitate. He picks out one of the traders in front of him and charges. The ape is on the trader before he knows what's going on. The ape snarls and draws his arm high in the air, slamming it down with tremendous force. If the man hadn't side-stepped at the last moment he'd be dead (Nat1 = Miss!)
There are people screaming and panicking. They're trying to get away from the attacks but can't outrun the primates.
"Hey! Hey! Over here!" Fredorian is waving his arms in the air and trying to get the attention of a nearby baboon "Why don't you swing back home to your mama!". It's enough of a distraction to provide an escape route for a man and a woman to rush past him, while Fredorian stands his ground.
Ok, first try with this sort of map so good luck to all of us! - Everyone should have edit access to the map. Please feel free to move yourself each round - If you cast a spell please feel free to show it on the map. "Insert > Drawing". Draw the shape (typically a circle) put it on the map and resize it to the appropriate size. I'll try and find an easier way for the next map. - I'll be doing a separate tab on the doc for each round - The market stalls provide cover/concealment. Think of them as 10ft tall buildings

Robert kibitzing in. Neshi technically I think you could move forward your 30 feet to about the back end of H 14/15, and then when you cast your lighting bolt with it's 120 foot range, the back end would hit the Baboon at about D 17/18 and he would have to save as well and take some damage.

Atlas shrugs then bolts, "The one time I don't run in blindly and this happens. You see Armand, there's a reason for my quick action!"
Using his incredible speed gained from his training with the WLA, Atlas runs in a straight line towards the dire ape. "Big mistake!" With extra energy he can only assume comes from fear of the innocent being hurt, he attacks!

Neshi pushes ahead and casts a lightning bolt at the dire ape. He gives it a real good zap.
Atlas digs deep to get up close to the ape. He is rewarded for his efforts as his sword slashes across it's chest.
Armand brings the heat on the baboon advancing on Fredorian and cooks its fur.
Elyngael goes with the ranged attack. One of her arrows strikes well though the other bounces harmlessly off a nearby stall. (OOC: Oh no! I hope Lynnette is ok!
Owen stays invisible and ascends to get a better look at things. He notices that it is the orangutans that have cast spells so far.
Osul does something (and the DM is really sorry for not giving him edit access sooner to the doc)
People scatter. If there is a way for them to flee then they are taking it. Armand may have yelled it but they didn't need to be told.
The primates go ape.
One of the orangutans finishes his spell and brings a Babau Demon into play. It moves to get a clean line of sight and then teleports - appearing behind Neshi!
It then casts a black tentacles spell around Armand, Elyngael and Khan. The tentacles flail about however don't actually ensnare anyone (CMB: 16. Didn't grapple anyone). The area is considered difficult terrain however.
The other orangutan takes the southern route but doesn't actually cast anything as far as you can tell.
The hastened baboons act. The two to the south speed across the market and stop at the edge of the tentacles. The two to the north try to box Atlas in.
The baboons and ape all attack Atlas! The baboons both miss but the ape doesn't. He attacks hard. It bites twice and claws twice at the fighter. One bite misses but the other attacks don't (Hit AC24, 28, 37 for 16, 13 and 12pts respectively)

Neshi back peddles and sends two scorching rays at the demon. It doesn't take as much damage as he would have hoped.
Atlas is being very heroic today. Perhaps having a good night's sleep at home has reinvigorated him? He manages to do some good damage to the ape.
Armand appreciates that the enemy grouped themselves perfectly and holy smites them.
Elyngael moves out of the tentacles and tries to entangle the baboons. Unfortunately they are quite nimble.
Owen tries to mentally wipe out one of the orangutans and makes good work of it. He can't see it from here but it starts drooling a little.
The nearby people flee. Some find their escape blocked by the black tentacles so try to navigate past the party.

Things do NOT go well for the party.
Osul is closest and can see his brother has fallen. Atlas isn't moving at all. The sight is such a shock that his lightning bolts are quite weak compared to what he usually calls down.
Neshi backs away - the large sized taur squeezing through the 5ft gap that exists between the cart and market stall. He casts a web spell and manages to snare the demon in the strands!
Elyngael and Khan try to finish off one of the baboons. They both do quite some damage but the monkey still stands.
Owen creates a real looking Resilient Sphere around Atlas' corpse. That should at least prevent the primates from desecrating it.
Armand rushes in to try and save Atlas, however there is no life left in Atlas.
Neshi is close enough to have eyes on Fredorian. He had been rushing to saftey but has looked over his shoulder to see what is going on. He can obviously tell that things aren't going well and can see Armand is about to be overwhelmed. While the other civilians flee Fredorian turns and runs to stand back-to-back with Armand! Fredorian has just a tiny hint of a smile as he draws a pair of daggers. Not an evil smile. More a 'we're going to die I better say something witty' smile. "I trust you'll put in a good word with your god for me when we see him, soon as that may be".
Atlas finds himself at total peace. Darkness. Silence. Weightlessness. His life doesn't flash before his eyes. Rather, his thoughts dwell on his happiest moments. It was a life well lived. Highlight to display spoiler: {I've got something coming up for you shortly but can't say what. Hang in there with me :) }

The demon manages to break free of the web (CMB 24) and pursues Neshi. It keeps up its chase.

The other baboon and orangutan attack Fredorian. The baboon cuts him across the stomach. His blood is spilt but he still stands tall. (Hit AC21)

The blackness begins to fade and Atlas sees his mum, looking down at him and he hears a cooing noise. "She's young...what's that noise, is it a baby?" The image fades and is replaced with the face of an older man with wrinkles and white hair. He is showing him something, but the item is fuzzy, but Atlas feels a sense of awe looking at it. Before he can figure out exactly what it is the image fades again...

IC: Owen dodges part of a lightning strike (Reflex save: 19 against DC17) before he flits out of whirlwind 'Osul's way. This is why I stay invisible!, he thinks. He flies toward the incoming reinforcements, trying to inhibit the other orangutan who just zapped him. He draws on his Bonded Ring to cast another Feeblemind spell on the other orange monkey. It must make a DC 21 Will save (at a -4 penalty if it is an arcane spellcaster) or return to its regular, stupid monkey state.
OoC: Hey, taking damage reminded me to update Owen's hitpoint total in my header. I think this is the first time in his career that he's taken more than 10 damage at a time. Ooh, sorry Atlas. That probably hits a little close to home right now.

Neshi casts a lightning bolt at the demon and watches as it passes right through. The demon snarls and is grateful for its immunity to electric damage.
Osul whirlwinds and manages to pick up a couple of the baboons which he unceremonisouly drops nearby.
Elyngael continues to fire arrow at the baboons as Khan wisely retreats.
Armand casts a spell to protect both himself and Fredorian. The man isn't sure what is planned but he nods and raises his daggers to properly defend himself.
Owen casts another Feeblemind spell and easily manages to dull the mind of the other orangutan.
----------------------
The ape has a chance to look about the field. Both the oragutans have the minds of toddlers and the baboons have taken some damage. He's also near death himself. Between the party to the east and the guards rushing in from the west he makes a bold call "Fall back!". This isn't worth a fight to the death.
The apes around Armand and Fredorian scatter. Those near Elyngael bare their teeth and hop up and down, taunting Khan. They look as though they are considering disobeying the ape however think better of it. They too make a run for it.
The only one that doesn't make a run for it is the demon. It's been summoned, doesn't take orders from the apes, and has a chance to keep on attacking.
It keeps up its pursuit of Neshi and misses on all attacks. It doesn't take much conbined effort from the party to dispatch it however.
The caravan guards give chase to the apes however don't look set to continue very far - just enough to get them clear of the caravans and a little more to deter them for next time.
"Score one for fools" Fredorian sheathes his knives "Nice spell by the way"
Fredorian looks over to Atlas' corpse and sighs "I'm sorry about your friend". He doesn't look overly sad for Atlas' death, but does sound sincere in his words for Armand.
"I should go check the merchants are ok. They'll probably spend the rest of the day checking over their stock"
OOC: All enemies have fled in different directions however you are free to pursue them if you choose. ----------------------
The blackness fades away and Atlas can see a blurry white light. It sharpens and he can see that he is standing in a large, stone paved courtyard. There is snow all around. The air is sharp and you can see mist as you breathe. It's very refreshing. What is in your hand? You look down and can see that you are clutching a quarterstaff in your right hand. You don't even remember picking it up. Where did your armor go? Why are you wearing a simple tunic? This whole situation is very unusual.
*whack* You don't have a chance to take in the scenery as you get clubbed in the head from behind. It's not enough to knock you out but does ring a bell.
"Focus! Keep your mind on the moment"
Atlas turns to see a shirtless older human man bouncing around on his feet and wielding a similar quarterstaff to you. It's undoubtedly what just hit you in the head.

Altas.... is dead.
It is a sight beyond belief. The fighter who often put himself in harms way to protect people has fallen.
Armand is the first to kneel by the body and tries to find some sort of good news. The party could petition Lord Gargul for Atlas' return. It might not be for free however. The party may need to consider what they could offer in return.
Osul and Neshi have concerns for Wiz-Bang. The poor tiny guy was in Atlas' hood and taking a peek you can see him rolled into a trembling ball. His eyes are closed and his hands (paws?) cover his ears.
Elyngael tends to Khan's wounds. It was bad enough losing Atlas this day. Losing Khan would be too much.
Miles and the rest of the guard approach from the east. They look pumped up for a fight but slow down to a walk on seeing the party. Miles steps forward, sword gripped in hand, and looks down upon Atlas "Is there anything that can be done?" he asks solemnly.

Osul chooses to pursue the dire ape. The whirlwind isn't the hardest thing to spot so the ape has enough time to get in position and prepare for him. At around 300ft away from the party it goes down. Atlas finds a weakness in the defense of his adversary, only to be rewarded with another thunk to the head. "Better, but you still need to stay focused, remember your training", the monk says with a grim smile.
It is decided that Atlas's body should be brought to the temple of Gargul in order to honor both Atlas and the god of life and death, and Neshi does the honor of carrying his friend to the there. Once there, Wiz-Bang climbs down from Neshi's shoulder, and scampers over to Atlas's lifeless body. At the Triple T, all the people who know the Wardens best are there to show there respect for the fallen hero, and after much reminiscing over the man known as Atlas Sunowl, the Wardens are feeling pretty confident that they are ready to face the god of life and death with a strong defense for their friend. While there, a small group of the Tree's management, including Folbre Ilyndrathyl, corner the Wardens and Folbre asks, "We're sorry to intrude on such solemn occasion, but people are asking about what just happened and we don't have any answers, they are also rightly concerned about the situation with Tree, as are we, and would appreciate an update on what you guys have ascertained thus far".

He tells the story of his first meeting with Atlas, and the adventure that they who came before undertook to find and stop the beacon in the Red Hills. He talks up (but doesn't lie about) the things he remembers everyone doing - but Atlas specifically. There is one thought fortunately well separated by time from that of which he speaks: he is not a leader, and his is not from a long love of learning and experience, and he is not ready to be an elder statesman by vitrue of still being alive when others have departed - one way or another.
eventually... "It is still early in the morning, and there is still time to do the things we need to do. Posting guard(s) at The Sappling is a good idea. He also takes a moment out to introduce Folbre to Wiz-bang.

He leaps into his attack and swings with his sword to hit 16, I'm going to assume that would hit and then bashes with his shield to hit 16 again.

At the Triple T, Armand writes furiously in his journal, recording all the information about Atlas. He also takes time to update it with the simians antics and their awakening status.
"So that's what we know so far." Armand says as Neshi explains everything they've discovered. "This Otaktay is an awakened Ape of some type that was abused by his human captor and awakener, who was apparently also a Druid. Not sure I'll understand how a Druid would abuse an animal. Be that as it may he gave Otaktay a deep seated hatred of humans apparently. An now he's going around awakening other simians, making a stronghold somewhere in the Culverwood, and apparently going around poisoning the Tree of Parting, and who knows what else. We might consider warning some of the other nearby communities of this so they can be on their guard."
Elyngael (Lynnette D) AC: 20 T:14, FF:16, CMD 27, HP 79/94 Thursday February 28th, 2019 9:17:26 PM "We must warn other places of the potential danger. Otaktay is not in his right mind, and could wreak havoc on more innocents. Also, I want to track down the Druid who did this abominable thing. What gain will he/she get from corrupting this ape?" Elyngael is angry that Nature has been turned against humans, especially heroic ones like Atlas - better to be angry than sad.

"The day is young, and what you call an intrusion is welcomed. The problem with intelligence is it leads a per... being to consider what he has heared. The dire ape heading this attack had some parting words, "People weak and die. Tree weak and Tree soon die. Apes celebrate". The best thing I can think to do is heal The Tree. The man in armor winces saying, "Well done, but do remember that combat is equal parts action and reaction". With that the armor clad man releases a series of quick strikes, the first is a trip attempt that leaves Atlas flat on his back, followed by a jab to the gut, and a couple strikes that Atlas is able to evade. "Good", the man says, "You were able to adjust to your new situation and avoid two blows". He then offers Atlas a hand up.
Folbre nods his head as the Wardens explain the situation, "Well, things are looking pretty dire here, and if this is any indicator of their strength", he says indicating the fallen Atlas, "Then this may turn out to be one of the greatest challenges the Tree Wardens have ever faced, but I have faith that you will return victorious" He then turns to Wiz-Bang and says, "Welcome master tarsier, your presence is most welcome, I look forward to getting to know you better in the future".
As Folbre and the rest of the town management walk away Wiz-Bang pipes up and says, "Wiz-Bang Like elf man, elf man call Wiz-Bang "Master Tarsier", Wiz-Bang then puffs out his little chest with obvious pride

But at great cost to ourselves. In future, we need to think ahead and fight with group tactics., Owen thinks.

Armand looks at Atlas again and shakes his head. "When will he learn to not just go rushing forward without us?" Armand remembers the time in the Drow caverns when Atlas was again beset by foes and cut off from everyone. If it had not been for that bloodwitch Leskni he would have died then.
Armand looks about the Wardens. "Say it seems to me we're a little weak on party members. Anyone know a decent fighter or paladin we can recruit?"

Much discussion is made as to what happened and what went wrong. the general consensus seems to be that they were unprepared, and that Atlas rushed head long into the fray without any backup. Armand laments their limited front line capabilities, wishing for another melee expert to help Atlas in that role, and Elyngael considers the idea of gaining more melee training. Only Neshi is able to find amusement during this trying time, as he witnesses their tarsier friends reaction to Folbre's welcome.
Two chairs suddenly appear, and the armor clad man takes a seat, and indicates that Atlas should do likewise. "There is truth to your statement", the man begins, "However, when faced with overwhelming foes, one must react or die". He goes on to say, "Action and reaction, that is the ebb and flow of combat, we act to the situation before us, then react based on our opponents actions and reactions. We also act and react based on our allies actions or inaction, making the whole thing a kind of dance, a dance of death if you will, and if we are cut off from our allies as we face overwhelming foes, well...".

'Osul looks at Armand in surprise and quietly says, "Armand? Can you please watch over me while I try to get a better grasp of what ails The Tree? I need to be busy, and I want all the company I can get.", he adds, looking at the other wardens. "It might take us all the way to lunchtime."
The Plan (TM) - subject to discussion and revision. 1) Locate and attend a place where the illness/poisoning is present - should not be too difficult. 2) Examine (look, touch, smell, taste - yeah) the affected area. 3) After discussing with the wardens what to ask, cast Speak with Plants. There is plenty of time for questions, and he has a second casting available if it goes beyond 10 minutes. Introductions, Are you aware that you are unwell?, How did it happen?, Where did it happen?, Is it still there?, etc. 4) Digest the answers, remove any continuing source of contaimination. 5) See what impact Neutralize Poison, Remove Disease, Cure Serious Wounds, and if needs be, 10 minutes of Mending. Then review again. 6) This is where the crazy really starts. There is atleast one way to get inside a tree. I don't know if it would work for The Tree. A tree has the means to draw mineralized water up to help it grow, so there should be a navigable system that something almost entirely composed of water could utilize, with the aim of finding something ... at least until Wiz-Bang tells us more about the water Otaktay used to poison The Tree.

While the day remains, he will cast Scrying on the Dire Ape who led the attack on the Tree. The ape must make a DC20 Will save at a -10 penalty, because Owen has a bloody scrap of hair and flesh that Atlas cut from the awakened beast. If the spell is successful, Owen plans to check out the enemy camp, to get a feel for their numbers, resources, and disposition.

Atlas looks down at his feet and speaks like a boy that is admitting to his father that he broke the fence by jumping on it, "Yes, Armand continues to remind me that I shouldn't rush forward without the group. However, there is merit in taking action before the enemy. It allows for you to force their reaction rather than always reacting yourself, you hold them to their spot, you control the situation. It also can protect your friends or any innocents that are around, since you force them to deal with you. I am much more likely to survive a sword to the gut than any of them. And if I die, well, I hope it buys them the time they need to survive. If I die..." Atlas looks up at the man when he says those words again, a flash of something crossing his mind, but he cannot quite grab onto it.
He takes a breath, "Yes, you are right, and Armand has a point. There are times to rush in and there are times to hold back. The dance changes based on who you are dancing with, on both sides, and what the risks are. I think Armand is a bit too inclined for me to sit around waiting, but I'll admit there are times when I should. Just not always. Was that dodgy enough of an answer?" Atlas smirks at the man, knowing he made the concession as minimal as possible, but it is still a concession. "Although, giving up ones life for the greater good isn't a bad way to die." And again that flash of memory, but it is gone before it was even there.

'Osul does some investigative casting though nothing is conclusive, when he casts Talk with Plants, the Tree responds, but isn't really able to answer any questions but his words are labored, and it is clear that the Tree is struggling, most likely due to the poison.

Armand takes the new boots and his glaive from James. "James I think we'll move Atlas's body to the garden. That will provide enough room for everyone to gather." He then goes with James and helps with moving Atlas's body from his room to the garden.
Armand is nervous, on the one hand Lord Gargul seems to have granted his prayer for the spell he needs. On the other hand what they seek is not the usual course of things. When everyone is gathered he nods, and begins praying. "Lord Gargul hear the prayer of your humble servant. Before us lies the body of one taken too soon. We ask that you grant a boon and restore him to us." Armand then casts Raise Dead.
The Master Awaits [DM Jerry] Tuesday March 5th, 2019 8:47:11 PM
A voice, powerful, but coming from far away booms!
"COME TO ME!!!! AN AUDIENCE IS GRANTED."
The silence that follows seems to last for a long moment.
Then Atlas disappears.
Then the Wold crackles out of existence.
Then shadows. As your eyes adjust, you see that all the Tree Wardens are present except for Atlas. Floating at high speed you look down on the Shadowlands. To your right, a river of Woldsblood. You can smell it. Earthy.
You find that you can focus your eyes to see any distance here. It is only a matter of will. As you focus in on the river, you see souls floating into the distance, the dead on their way to judgement. One figure seems to lead you. Yes it is Atlas. His eyes are closed. You float high above, but obviously, you are following him.
As it flows, the River hurtles forward with ever increasing speed. In the distance, the Isles of Rest on the right and the Estates of Unrest on the left. Dividing them in to are the Valleys of Twilight guarded by Maab's Castle. These are surrounded by a lake of Woldsblood. The souls of the dead all head to the right.
As you focus into the distance you see the end of the journey. A large half-dome open to the beautiful Lands of Rest. You reach the end of the river and cross the lake. The air smells sweet. Restful. But that is not the thing that catches your breath. It seems....real. More real than anything you've ever experienced! Brighter, more in focus as if the real Wold is but a dimmer version of what you see before you.
You land about 100' outside the Half Dome on its far open side. The grass feels like needles through your footwear. With a few steps you adjust, but the truth of this place reveals the truth: This place is indeed more real than anywhere you have been before. A line of folks wait their turn to stand before Gargul and be judged. Some wait patiently with the ghosts of loved ones who have gone before standing with them welcoming them to the afterlife.
Some stand in chains guarded, so that they may not harm anyone.
Then you spot Atlas, being pulled forward past the line by an imp!!!!
It leads him straight forward to the giant throne within the amphitheater dome. It cackles, giggles and talks to him incessantly. Atlas seems to only have eyes for Gargul. Then he starts and turns. Spots you.
The imp laughs loudly and speaks, sounding closer than he is. "Come on! The master awaits!"

We are here," he pauses and sweeps his hands to indicate the other Wardens, "to ask that you return our comrade, Atlas, to the living for his time was cut short by aberrations of nature." Armand pauses again trying to think how to proceed. "What is required of us for this endeavor?"

Gargul watches Atlas. He studies him as he approaches.
Then as usual, the impatient adventurer speaks drives the conversation. To the point. Wants his comrade back. Polite, and confident in his god, but doesn't wait on him.
Gargul shifts his vision to Armand. "PATIENCE," is his answer. He almost smiles. "TREE WARDENS, COME STAND BY YOUR FRIEND."
One of those in chains guffaws in the distance. Lightning strikes him down that seems to exit from the throne itself. The big minotaur collapses and doesn't move again.
Gimp the Imp laughs raucously and runs circles around the fallen minotaur. "Oh, that was awesome! Do it again! Do it again! Someone else laugh! Come on! HeheheHOOooo"
Gargul rises from his throne and walks down the steps sitting on the bottom one. He faces Atlas. His face is serious, but kind. A rare look for the god.
"ATLAS SUNOWL, HOW DID YOU PERISH? I WOULD UNDERSTAND YOUR PERSPECTIVE."

It isn't perfect, but he puts more effort into it than he ever has done for a bow before. When he is upright again he looks at Gargul, clears his throat to make sure it still works, then addresses the question, "Great lord Gargul, I welcome your audience, thank you. My memory is a bit fuzzy, but as I remember it, a group of animals that had been enlightened with the ability to speak and perform magic entered the market area under the Tree of Parting. Our party approached them with the thought that they were part of the reason that the Tree of Parting was sick. They didn't take kindly to our approach and spread out to attack the civilians. Honorable folk would have attacked us, but they went right for the civilians, drawing weapons and appearing to attack, or maybe it was threaten, I cannot remember for sure. I feared for the lives of those around us and I ran forward with no other thought than trying to get their attention and save as many people as we could. I think I went after the leader, and the plan actually worked. I was quickly surrounded and the people in the market seemed to be free to run at that point. However, within seconds I was overwhelmed. Honestly, I've never been overwhelmed like that, I didn't expect their strikes to be so precise and deadly. I've faced more than that before without dying. No matter, I still don't know the results. I hope that my actions saved at least some people, although they clearly didn't save me." At that point Atlas takes a breath. He was speeding up as he went, getting more nervous with each word.

He doesn't want to interrupt the conversation with Armand, so he holds his tongue until there is a moment. "Thank you Lord Gargul, I will continue to fight for good, you will not regret this." He then fades back as Neshi did, completely overwhelmed by the experience. His emotions are a mix of awe, joy, eagerness, and relief, mixed with a whole lot of disbelief.

Armand licks his lips, his mouth feels very dry. "Well Lord Gargul as you indicated we found the tarsier living in the Tree. He told us that an awakened gorilla was responsible. Apparently this gorilla was awakened by a druid and then mistreated. He killed the druid and has himself become a druid and awakened a variety of simians. He apparently plans to rid the world of humans. We are just begining the endeavors to find him and convince him of the errors of his ways." Armand says.
Important in Ways You Do Not Yet Realize [DM Jerry] Friday March 8th, 2019 9:26:39 PM
Gargul nods.
"I TRUST YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS WILL TAKE CARE OF THINGS, ARMAND. THAT TREE IS IMPORTANT IN WAYS YOU DO NOT YET REALIZE AND HAS A ROLE TO PLAY IN FUTURE LIVES OF MANY INCLUDING YOURS. STAY TRUE."
He summons his cane and looks at the growing line of those waiting for judgment.
"YET AGAIN I GROW WEARY OF THIS RESPONSIBILITY. IF ONLY I HAD LEARNED THE LESSONS THESE HEROES HERE KNOW WHILE I WAS MORTAL. THESE BURDENS MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN MINE."
He begins walking away from the seat of judgment.
"GIMP!!! DON'T DO ANYTHING STUPID WHILE I AM GONE."
As Gargul walks into the distance, Gimp cackles gleefully and everyone in the line suddenly looks very worried. And with that, the scene fades slowly to be replaced with thoughts of home.
As if awakening from a dream, but one more real than anything you have to this point experienced, you find yourself in the garden from which you left. Full of questions and perhaps a few answers. And hope.

The Wardens are back to full strength, as they come aware of their surroundings they find themselves back in the garden. with Atlas standing among them as if nothing horrible had ever happened. Everyone is relieved and overjoyed with the outcome of their visit with Lord Gargul, but when they arrive they find a very sad and frightened Wiz-Bang. Wiz-Bang looks up with tears in his big eyes and says, "Wardens gone and Wiz-Bang all alone, Wiz-Bang think Wardens leave Wiz-Bang and no help tree". His face immediately brightens when he sees Atlas standing very much alive among the rest of the Wardens,"BIG-MAN!", he yells with joy, as he scampers over and climbs up Atlas and begins nuzzling the fighter, cheek to cheek, much like a cat would, and Atlas is pretty sure he hears the diminutive primate purring. When Neshi asks if they should hunt for apes, or a cure, Wiz-Bang says very seriously, "Apes and cure found same place, Otaktay".

Atlas smiles at Wiz-Bang and scratches his back. He then looks up, a bit sheepish. "Thank you, all of you. That was...scary, but also heart warming. I will try not to let you down again. I may even hesitate a moment the next time so Armand can have his say before I jump in." He gives Armand a devilish grin and tries to turn the moment back to the task at hand.
"I'm all for leaving sooner rather than later. I would like to get a change of clothes though if you don't mind. Also, you're not prancing me around like I'm a Bel Tine girl newly braided. Just act like everything is normal and we didn't just speak with a god." Atlas knows it will be impossible, but he is sure going to try.
DM Jeremy "What do we go hunting for?" Tuesday March 12th, 2019 5:25:04 AM
'Osul is confused, but we love him, and requires seeing Otaktay's stronghold to believe it. There is a desire to make a spectral of Atlas as means to rebuild confidence in the people, but Atlas would prefer a more nonchalant approach. After a quick change of clothes, and a gathering of equipment, the Warden's are ready to begin the trek to the Culverwood, and Otaktay, it is about mid morning.
As the Wardens make their way through, down and out of the Tree, people gather to watch them leave, showing some obvious relief at the site of Atlas walking among his friends. They give many a good luck, and go get um's, and the Wardens realize, that the populace has been informed as to the going on's, and they once again have put their confidence in the Tree Wardens.
Just before the Wardens depart from the tree, Wiz-Bang touches the Tree, and mumbles a few words that 'Osul recognizes as a speak with plants spell, he then carries on a brief conversation with the Tree. After a minute or two he turns to the Wardens and says, "Tree very tired, icky water is hurting Tree bad, but Tree says Tree believes in Wardens, and Tree says Tree will hold on as long as Tree can".

This is why I said what I said."
DM Jeremy "Do you think he's some kind of savant druid?" d20=12 ; d20=5 ; Wednesday March 13th, 2019 5:32:46 AM
Fredorian graciously excepts the thanks from Armand and Atlas, and if he is still put off from Atlas's previous behavior towards him, he doesn't show any signs, instead, He humbly excepts the thanks and says, "I simply did what needed to be done". As an after thought he adds, "I loved my father, but I hated a lot of the things he stood for, I do my best to be an honest businessman, and do what I can to help others in need, and I do hope that someday we could be friends, or at least share a pint of ale together". with that he makes his exit, claiming he has a lot of work to do, and that he plans on still being at the Tree when the Wardens return.
Wiz-Bang over hears the talk about himself, and he says, "Wiz-Bang is Green Mage, Not strong Green Mage, but Green Mage' he then adds sorrowfully, "Not strong enough to stop Otaktay"
At Neshi's comment, Wiz-Bang says, "Yes, Culverwood very big, but Wiz-Bang knows the trail"
Owen makes several scrying attempts along the way to the Culverwood, and they all show the Dire ape making a b-line for the Culverwood, using the same general route that Wiz-Bang is leading the Wardens on, until he happens to witness the ape actually enter the woods, and then the scry was abruptly cut off, and all additional attempts seem to fail. Owen feels a force much more powerful then himself blocking him.
After a few days, the Wardens find themselves on the edge of the Culverwood. Wiz-Bang leads them to a trailhead that Owen recognizes as the same one he saw the Dire Ape use. once inside the Woods, the Wardens are struck by the shear magnitude of the Culverwood. The trees are tall and majestic, and they are very dense. With the exception of 'Osul, who doesn't seem to be affected by the terrain, anyone who attempts to leave the trail either find themselves completely cut off and unable to actually leave the trail, or in difficult terrain. The lighting even during the brightest times of the day would be considered dim lighting, and at night, the light of the moon doesn't seem to penetrate the canopy, making the woods as dark as a cave.

"I have... had a feeling. Like when I was feeling sick when we went looking for the maples in The Wood for the emissary. This time I felt The Heart of The Wood skip a beat. Thought I should share."
"Also, recall that The Wood may guide us all off our intended paths if it has a greater need. Do not fight it, except to stay together. Understand it, and let it bear you onwards."

Those who can, try to ponder the tiles, and Owen comes real close, and with a little help from Armand, the two are able to crack the code. All that remains is to figure out what is to be done with the tiles. translations of tile symbols
DM Jeremy "We've finally made it to the Culverwood." Monday March 18th, 2019 5:11:28 AM

I wonder what happens if we get it wrong." Atlas thinks about that for a moment. "I'm going to look around to ensure we're not going to kill ourselves while you smart folk try to figure out the order of pressing the tiles."

Armand volunteers to push the buttons in the order Owen suggested, but before he can, Elyngael steps up claiming to be more expendable if things go south. 'Osul has a last moment thought about the symbols but it's already to late. As he is about to say something, Elengael pushes the last button.
Nothing happens at first, then you hear a soft humming sound coming from the statue. Soon the hum becomes a pulsating sound. The sound is soothing to hear, as if the statue is trying to gently coerce something or someone. After a moment or two, you hear a rustling in the leaves from the foliage to your left. When you turn, you see two huge trees, for lack of a better way of saying it, step to the side, one to the left, and one to the right, revealing a third trail.

As the Wardens head down the trail, they hear the pulsating sound end, and the same rustling sound that they heard before, and 'Osul, and perhaps the rest of the party turn around to witness the trees returning to their original position.

The spores have a 20ft radius, so going 21 Ft would get you out, and 60 would definitely do the trick

OoC: Kent/Neshi, you can only use one hero point per turn! If you use the point before your d20 save roll, however, you get a +8 on that roll.
Owen heroically resists the spores, clamping his mouth and nose shut against them. Fort Save (Base 8 + Hero Point 8 + Bless 1) = d20 + 17 = 25, Pass!
He sees that Atlas is unresponsive, so he moves up to D11, then over to H11. He places a hand on Atlas' back while looking for a place to land.... then casts Teleport, moving Atlas to X8 and himself to W9. Teleport roll: 43, which should be on target. "Hang on, Atlas; I'll cast Bull's Strength on you next."

Atlas is convinced he is smaller then Wiz-Bang, so he decides to hide in plain sight Armand drops a flame strike, one of the Basidironds fails, but the two blood brambles and other basidirond saves for half 'Osul throws up a wall of thorns and entangle causing all but one Blood Bramble and one Basidirond (the one not in the effect area) to be trapped, and take some damage. Neshi casts a fireball (As Weston said only one hero point per round, so i took the better of the two fireballs) both basidironds save for half and two of the blood brambles save. Khan retreats, and Elyngael takes the sky thanks to an anything potion. Owen gets Atlas out of harms way.
Wiz-Bang shrugs of the effect of the spores, and even though he is a pacifist, he won't sit back and let his friends die, so he scampers to the rear of the party and casts "Gust of Wind" blowing all the spores away. the effects will linger for 1d4 rounds, I rolled a 4 so you will still need to make the fort saves vs hallucination for the next 4 rounds.

Owen drops a couple of fireballs on the entangled monsters, neither Basidirond saves, but both Blood Brambles do, however, it's not enough to save them as both the Basidironds and blood brambles perish in a smoky death.
Elyngael swoops down while drawing her new sword and takes a chunk out of the remaining blood bramble.
Atlas makes a mighty effort, and slices the remaining blood bramble to pieces, ending it for good, although the creature is able to leave him with a final scratch.
Wiz-Bang looks around at the remains of the plant creatures, and though he is happy both he and his new friends are alive, as a greenmage, he feels a hint of sadness at the deaths of the plants. He says, "Wiz-Bang wish Wardens did not have to kill plants. Wiz-Bang know Wardens had to do what Wardens had to do, but seeing plants die makes Wiz-Bang sad"

Upon hearing the group discuss what to do, Neshi nods in approval, but doesn't say anything. At least not until he sees Owen flopping about. He goes over and gently calms him to the best of his ability, knowing that the hallucination will wear off soon.

DM Jeremy "When good plants go bad." Friday March 29th, 2019 5:15:54 AM
Atlas sympathizes with Wiz-Bang wishing to fight evil, not hungry plants. He votes to heal up and move on.
Armand channels some energy relieving some of the ouch caused buy the plants. He suggests getting a good night sleep, claiming the need to replenish spells. He also asks Wiz-Bang if he recognizes the area they are in.
Eyngael agrees with Armand, claiming she is also worried about the Tree, but if the Wardens aren't up to full strength, the won't be able to save it. She also looks around for any valuables.
Owen is sinking in quicksand (in his mind)
Neshi shares his surprise about the creatures capabilities, then goes over to comfort the hallucinating Owen.
'Osul is also saddened by the need to kill the plants, and hopes for a chance to go around and avoid conflict with non evil beasts in the future.
Wiz-Bang perks up to his usual cheerful self, and answers Armand saying, "Yes Wiz-Bang know where Wiz-Bang is, but naughty plants not here when Wiz-Bang here last". He then turns up his diminutive head as if he was deep in thought, then continues to answer Armand saying, "Maybe half day to Otaktay".
In her search, Elyngael discovers the fresh skeletal remains of what appear to be 7 primates, scattered about the clearing. They appear to be the remains of a dire ape, 2 orangutans, and 4 baboons. Found among the remains she finds, an amulet, a cloak, 8 small sized daggers, a large sized masterwork longbow, 4 small sized masterwork shortbows, a total of 60 normal arrows, and 14,400gp worth of precious gems. Neshi looks over Elyngael's shoulder at the loot she has discovered, then addresses the question of resting. "I'm still fully ready to face them. Those spores did me in, so I didn't spend much of my energy. However, if others need to stop then I think the Tree will make it one more day."

If we can get those back and you can send me back in boosted like that then I'm much more likely to survive this time. That stone skin thing was especially nice, not to mention the Bless and the Haste capabilities. Honestly, I almost felt like a god, until I choked on those spores." He finishes a bit sheepishly, embarrassed that something so simple could cause him to fail.
After a moment Atlas goes over and picks up his bow from where he dropped it. "Did anyone see those shots? Not bad for my first time using it in battle, eh?" He gets a boyish smile on his face as he thinks about that.

'Osul nods in agreement, until he finally hears Neshi and Atlas talking about "spores". "Spores? What are you talking about?"
He dismisses the cyclopses, with thanks. He then dismisses those area effect spells he can, before dousing any remnant fire or hot spots with water. He takes a quick glance over the items, but thinks they can be stowed away for now - and answers Elyngael with, "Later works for me.".
As he takes a second look at the skeletal remains, he gives voice to a simple concern: "They also entered the 'tween path. Otaktay is likely aware of it..."

Strange things truly happen in the Culverwood, Mack appears out of nowhere, says his hellos to the members he knows, and like that he's off on his own adventure again. Maybe he will rejoin the Wardens, in the future, only time will tell.
Being immune to the spores, 'Osul didn't realize the Basidironds had released any. He realizes that the primate bones are a recent kill from the plants that they just defeated, and is pretty certain that they were the same primates they face at the Tree. He thinks it's odd that plants would kill for food, until he remembers the Venus Flytrap he saw once upon a time eating insects. OOC... hope you don't mind the flytrap ad lib
Neshi doesn't know Mack, but realizes he is no threat. He is cool with heading on, or making camp.
Atlas realizes the wisdom in resting. He really liked the buffs he received and would like the same treatment when facing Otaktay.
Armand channels energy to do some more healing.
After the spore induced hallucinations, Owen isn't certain that Mack is real.
Elyngael asks what to do with the loot for now, and wonders how Mack made it through without her or Khan noticing.
Before Elyngael can put away the loot, Wiz-Bang scampers over to the pile and picks up the Amulet of Mighty Fists and says, "Otaktay gives these to dire apes, and Festus, Festus Otaktay's tiger friend. Necklace make claws and bites hurt more, maybe kitty wear it?"OOC...I'm not trying to force anything, just throwing out a suggestion

Owen sees wisdom in Atlas's suggestion.
Armand likes the current location, because the former occupants would have kept the wild beasties at bay, but is willing to go with the flow.
Elyngael likes Wiz-Bang's suggestion and hangs the Amulet of Mighty Fists around Khans neck, then she sets out to scout ahead.

Wiz-Bang is undecided as which would be better, staying or trudging on, but the majority of the Wardens feel they should take advantage of the daylight they have left. Elyngael, Khan, and 'Osul scout ahead, and find the coast is clear for the moment. In fact the only tracks Elyngael is able to find are random animal tracks.
