Scene 2: Into the Grass

Cuts like a knife (DM BatMark)
Monday March 25th, 2019 8:02:42 PM

The time comes, and the party sets off into the grasses, heading westward and little bit south. Thich estimates that the trip will take ten to twelve days, assuming no major delays or detours are required. Grindar and Bigby take the lead, using their skills to find a safe path through the grass. A prayerful Caelwyn and 'Lil protect the rear of the party. Haemir sends Fand overhead, although it is hard for his fine feathered friend to see much down at ground level. He won't lose the party, but might not be as good a scout as usual. Sol joins Haemir in the middle of the party, asking about the book that he read. Xel'Aw bumbles about in the middle as well, trying to study the grasses but finding the whole thing a bit disorientating. Thich is content to walk with this middle group, which has the added virtue of potentially help keep him alive for when you reach the mountains.

After a long day marching through the heat, you start to look for a place to bed down for the night. As you proceed, Grindar and Bigby both note a change in the grass ahead. It has a silvery sheen and what looks like serrated edges. When you show it to Thich, he congratulates you on noticing it, since you otherwise might have walked into the razor sharp Bladegrass and been slashed to ribbons. It is possible to move through it very slowly and carefully (and still risk the occasional cut) or attempt to find a way around the bladegrass. Which of these strategies, or another of your own devising, do you try?

Caelwyn congratulates Grindar and Bigby on their skill, then thinks for a moment. "Could Fand fly up and see how wide this patch of Bladegrass extends? If it's small enough we should probably go around, but if it's miles wide we may want to take a chance and go through it..."

Caelwyn keeps his eyes on the surrounding grasses as he speaks. (Perception 12)

Haemir joins the scouts at the front. "Yes indeed well spotted". On hearing Caelwyn's suggestion he agrees with the idea and asks "Fand would you mind"? As he feeds the Macaw some seeds...
"Look for the reflective shimmer".

Fand heads backs a and flies above the grass to take a look over the top (Perception:11)

"Thich, are there things around here that like to ambush folks in this bladegrass stuff? I can heal any minor cuts we get, but if we're attacked in there it could get nasty."

Grindar, Son of Grindor (Jeremy Canaday) AC 18/12/16, CMD 17, HP 21/21

Grindar says, “I would very much prefer to go around the bladegrass, but if we need to go through, I’ll lead the way, though the going will be slow”.

Bigby will offer to scout ahead if that is what the group decides, hoping he can pass through the grass unhindered (he will have to hop off wolfgang for this). If so, perception check: 20.

Sol watches Fand fly up, and takes Corbin out of his pocket inside his coat.

"Corbin, go and help would you?" He lets his Raven take wing and look as well. ((Perception 22)).

"Hopefully it is not too large, we would not want to lose to many days travelling around it."

Xel'Aw inquiries if there is a way to harvest some to catalogue for future reference.

You take the grass road, and I'll take the other grass road... (DM BatMark)
Tuesday March 26th, 2019 8:35:36 PM

Caelwyn suggests sending Fand up to scout, and Haemir asks Fand to do so. Sol sends Corbin aloft to help. Bigby offers to scout if needed. 'Lil asks Thich whether the bladegrass is a likely location for an ambush, but Thich responds, "No more than anywhere else in the grass. Anything tough enough to move through the stuff would be a pretty nasty opponent, though." He looks a little dubious at the prospect of moving through the bladegrass. Grindar bravely offers to lead the way if you must go through the grass, but prefers not to. Xel'Aw inspects the grass and finds that it is possible to carefully cut some of the grass for future study.

How much grass does Xel'Aw take, and how does he store it?

Your airborne scouts prove quite useful. From their reports, you can determine that the bladegrass patch is about twice as wide as it is deep. You could walk around it in either direction in a few hours. Moving through it would probably take about the same amount of time, because of the shorter distance, but runs the risk of injury.

Boldly onward, or carefully around?

"I believe it makes more sense to go around, although I suppose nothing is likely to attack us in there...If we decide to go through the Bladegrass I can go first - I will be better protected with my armor, and could clear a path for you. But it seems more sensible to simply go around...."

Grindar compares his breastplate with Caelwyn’s and says with a joking smile, “I would much prefer to go around, but I don’t think your breastplate is going to offer anymore protection then mine”.

"Around it is. No need to take unnecessary risks."

He watches Xel'aw take some.

"I would like to study that with you when we get time if that would be agreeable to you friend."

Caelwyn laughs as he looks at Grindar's armor. "Sometimes I forget I am not the most heavily armored among us, besides the shield I suppose...since you wouldn't get cut to pieces, we would certainly be better off having you in front. But if we all agree, around we go, I suppose."

He keeps an eye out for trouble as they move along. Perception 3

And we'll all get to the Crystal Mountains at the same time... (DM BatMark)
Wednesday March 27th, 2019 9:06:13 PM

Xel'Aw cuts some grass, and Sol is also interested in studying it later. After Grindar and Caelwyn compare the size of their breastplates, you all agree to go around the bladegrass. Although Bigby does seem to think that his supple Corinthian leathers would be just fine, thank you. It is still hot work and slow going, but your path proves wise, and you manage to safely circumnavigate to the other side of the swatch of bladegrass that had blocked your path. Night is coming on, however, and it is time to make camp. Do you camp up against the edge of the bladegrass, or move out some distance into the other more passable grasses? Any other measures that you would like to take during the night?

(You each receive a 100XP story award for learning your way through some of the Sargrass without getting cut to ribbons. Your excellent perception checks by the front rank saved you from a rough day bleeding liquid into your thirsty environs!)

"Oye. I dunno what I was thinkin' bringing this stuff into this grass desert. I need Mohawk to finish teachin' me how to weave this stuff so I can fashion somethin' better.

"Also, dibs on first watch."

'Lil stretches out and gets to work building a temporary camp. When the time comes to sleep and she takes her watch, she'll put her armor back on.

“That’s a good idea Sol”, Grindar explains, then he pulls his winter blanket it of his backpack, and drapes it in front of the blade grass being careful not to cut the blanket. He still has his bedroll to sleep in,and won’t be using his cold weather blanket anytime soon.

Grindar suggests moving away from the bladegrass, to hearty agreement all around. Haemir gathers some more bladegrass before you move away. 'Lil helps get the camp set up, then re-dons her armor in readiness for first watch. As you sit around eating dinner before turning in, Xel'Aw raises the question of what to do the next time the Sargrass power manifests itself. Bigby suggests offering a sacrifice of prairie pig.

Eventually, you settle in for the night. The first group of watchers notice nothing amiss, but around 10pm, things start to get exciting while Grindar, Caelwyn, and Bigby are on watch. All three of you hear a rustling in the grass, back in the direction that you came from, and it is out of time with the grasses' movement in the wind. Something is coming from the south, and they sound kinda big! Those with darkvision can just make out three pony-sized shapes moving not-stealthily-enough towards the party, about 60 feet away and 10 feet apart. There is only dim moonlight for those without darkvision, so you won't be able to see them yet. In either case, they have partial concealment due to the intervening grasses. You seem to have gotten the jump on them, even though they had clearly been hunting you down. (OOC: Your rocking perception checks save the day again!)

You get to act first, what do you do?

Inspire Courage - From the Paizo Bard page A 1st-level bard can use his performance to inspire courage in his allies (including himself), bolstering them against fear and improving their combat abilities. To be affected, an ally must be able to perceive the bard's performance. An affected ally receives a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls. At 5th level, and every six bard levels thereafter, this bonus increases by +1, to a maximum of +4 at 17th level. Inspire courage is a mind-affecting ability. Inspire courage can use audible or visual components. The bard must choose which component to use when starting his performance.

Bigby lets out a howl as he recognizes these things—bounders, nasty fanged-frog beast things with big jumpy legs. Nasty fangs and a mean streak a mile wide. He charges the one on the east as it moves closer, doing 4hp of damage. Wolfgang tries to follow, but is hampered by the grass. He moves up but doesn't have time to attack. The bounder tries to bite him back (and it would have been for 13 hp of damage!) but Caelwyn's yelling seemed to startle it into missing. Caelwyn couldn't quite make it all the way to the fight yet though.

Grindar similarly tries to charge the center one, but slogs through the grass and just makes it to the creature. (You can keep your to hit roll for next round if you like, and the crit will confirm.) It bites him in return, for 11hp of damage!

'Lil awakens, stands, and invokes the blessing of Domi on the party.

Haemir groans awake, and manages to get off a shot at the one on the west, hitting it for 3hp of damage.

Sol moves a little closer and magically hurls his staff, but misses due to Bigby and the grass blocking his shot.

Xel'Aw recites a rousing poem, adding further vigor to the party's actions! The western bounder, no fan of poetry apparently, moves right up in his face and bites him for 8hp of damage!

You may continue your attacks and other efforts to defeat these croaking big beasts. And boy are they croaking loudly now!

(Remember, the grass is difficult terrain for most of you. I failed to mention that the sleeping folks needed to spend a round waking up and standing up, so you get a freebie this time :) Now you have bless and inspire courage going, so make the most of it!)

Caelwyn moves up to attack the west-most frog-thing, which was ripping into Xel'Aw, but just misses when he can't get into flanking position. Haemir sends storm at the same one, and batters is for 3hp of damage, before Fand swoops in for another 2hp of damage.

Bigby claws his twice for a total of 12 hp of damage, but Wolfgang can't quite catch it in his maw. Grindar winds up a mighty smash and takes the center one down in one blow. It literally and figuratively croaked! 'Lil rewards Xel'Aw's rhyme with 6hp of healing, encouraging him to continue the Vogon-like verse. Xel'Aw in turn tries to grant 'Lil a resistance spell. The bounder in front of him takes an attack of opportunity when Xel'Aw casts the spell non-defensively without taking a 5' step away, hitting Xel'Aw for another 12hp of damage, despite being bedeviled by the storm! Xel'Aw is unconscious and bleeding.

Thich begins to move around the easternmost one, attempting to get into position for an attack.

The two remaining bounders make louder rasping croaks when they see their sibling go down, but undeterred, they continue their attacks. The one that crushed Xel'Aw turns its attention to Caelwyn, missing him with its hideous bite and two swipes of its claws. Saved by the armor! The other one makes a similarly poor showing against Bigby, missing with all three attacks (even before applying the penalty for being shaken.)

Despite being knocked unconscious, Xel'Aw manages to fall in the most melodramatic way, as if he were not in fact within an inch of his life, but instead on a stage. "Oh death, where is thy sting?" But the words do not have sound, no, they're but figments in the mind as the brain smashes from one side of the skull to the other. "Life is but a walking shadow..." a poor player... "Out, out brief candle..."

And yet, he may pull through. (Stable check: 13 including the neg 3)

As he moves he concentrates sending a storm burst at the Bounder attacking Bigby (ranged touch attack:12 for 6 dmg also giving it -2 to attack roll for one round. Roll includes -4 firing in to combat & +1 from Lil's bless).

Caelwyn strikes boldly at the bounder that took down Xel'Aw, but fails to connect. Xel'Aw for his part drops in a most melodramatic way, but at least doesn't seem to keep bleeding. Haemir moves toward Xel'Aw while sending a storm to swirl around the bounder near BIgby. The storm does 6hp of damage to the bounder, and seems to have thrown its aim off a little. Grindar moves to flank the western bounder, but also can't seem to hit it. 'Lil insults the thing, but trips on the grass and Ramona swings wide of the target. Thich moves to flank the frog-thing and strikes it with a vicious chop of his hand for 6hp of damage. With the flank, Bigby's first strike lands, causing 5hp of additional damage. Wolfgang gets in on the action, doing 5hp of damage and flipping the thing on its foggy back—it is now prone. Sol's magically propelled staff goes wide again.

The western bounder lashes out at Caelwyn, biting and clawing but only hitting him once, for 3hp of damage. The eastern one, still prone, tries to bite and claw 'Lil, hitting twice for 12hp and 4hp of damage!

Things are really hopping now! And that deeper croak seems to be coming closer…

Caelwyn fights hard but still can't land a blow. Grindar doesn’t do any better this time around, perhaps distracted by the approaching croaking. Xel'Aw's intestines resist the urge to leap up inside his own body to choke him to stop the bad puns that he seems capable of even in his unconscious state, yet his blood red blood does seem to have stopped flowing. 'Lil staggers back and gives herself some blessed healing. Bigby at least keeps his puns to himself as he rips at the prone bounder for 11hp of damage. Wolfgang takes a bite out of it too for 3hp of damage (there is no bless damage bonus) and the thing looks to be at the stick—not out of it quite yet though. Thich finishes it off with a wicked foot stomp, and it stops moving, tongue lolling out. Sol's Hand of the Apprentice yet again proves futile. Haemir is able to heal Xel'Aw for 4hp of damage, which should be enough to wake him up (be careful about standing up, which will draw an AoO!) Fand strikes the remaining bounder for 3hp to finish up our heroes' moves.

The bounder attempts to retaliate against Fand, but finds no purchase against the wily old bird. To the south, however, you hear a frightfully loud croak, it sounds absolutely enraged, as a larger bounder, this one as big as a horse, emerges from the grass and looks back and forth between the two slain baby bounders before focusing its bloodshot froggy eyes on you.

Caelwyn fights mightily but still can't land a blow. Grindar comes ever so close to striking it, but misses as well. Xel'Aw's verse continues to inspire, somehow, despite some avian gender confusion. Fand is particularly inspired by having a theme song going, and critically rips the baby bounder for another 4 hp of damage. Haemir is unfortunately not as effective as his possessed plumaged pal. Bigby heals 'Lil for 4 hp, then rides Wolfgang over to flank the baby bounder. Wolfgang bites the thing on its kangaroo-like leg for 6hp of damage, but it is still not enough to lay it low and fails to trip it. Sol suddenly gets bold and goes for the big one, striking it for 5hp of damage. Thich moves over to attack the momma bounder as well, but can't hurt it through its armored hide.

The baby bounder bites out at Wolfgang, critting him for 13 hp of damage. It claws at Grindar and Caelwyn but misses them both. Big Momma pounces in and bites at Haemir but misses. Her claw attack on Haemir also misses, but against Grindar, she strikes for 8hp of damage. 'Lil never gets a chance to use her readied healing channel.

Caelwyn finally connects with the baby bounder, Domi lending him the strength to deal 4hp of damage. Fand also lands a blow, for 2hp of damage. Bigby strikes the lethal blow, and the last of the small ones goes down.

After the youngling goes down, 'Lil channels healing (twice, with Domi rewarding her persistence with another action!), curing the wounded party members for 6hp of damage.

Wolfgang whirls to the big one, and bites it for 9hp of damage. His savage attack would have tripped a lesser foe, but this one is big and wily!

Haemir switches his whirlwind attack to the larger one, doing 8hp of damage and putting it off its attack game a bit.

Grindar turns to the big one with a mighty roar of ineffectualness. Did he use all his mojo on the first one he struck down?

Sol tries to daze it, but it shakes its head and seems to be unaffected. Thich manages to smack it in the side for 4hp of damage.

Xel'Aw is able to safely stand up, and continues the versification of the battlefield--you find the odd meter unusually motivational.

Sol again tries to Daze the creature.

"Come on! This should work!"

He is clearly getting more and more frustrated.

Haemir moves up and throws a net that entangles the momma bounder, while Fand moves to flank.

'Lil gives Grindar a healing shot in the arm for 10hp.

Bigby Wolfgang step to the side and make a series of attacks, one of which lands for 6hp of damage.

Caelwyn also moves around to flank, which together with the net allows him to strike her hard for 11hp of damage

Grindar, thankful for the healing from 'Lil, seems to be reinvirgorated and smashed the bounder for another 10hp of damage!

Sol tries another Daze, but yet again, the thing seems too thick-headed for the spell to penetrate (Save = 15, just enough to pass!)

Bleeding and thrashing about in the net, the big bounder lashes out in fury. She seems particularly intent on eating Bigby and skinning Wolfgang. She chomps Bigby for 12hp of damage, rendering him senseless and bleeding. She grabs him in her mouth and shakes him mercilessly. Fortunately, only one claw rakes Wolfgang, dealing a vicious 9hp of damage, while the other claw slashes by just inches from his snout.

Xel'Aw continues to effortlessly versify, like an automaton run by some power on the Wold Wide Web!

She seems pretty grievously wounded, but is not as bad off as poor Bigby, who is having terrible dreams about all the ways to die from nature in the Sargrass. You can get barbequed, boiled, broiled, baked, sauted. There's death kabobs. Pan fried, deep fried, stir fried. Treeapple death, lemon death, coconut death, pepper death, death soup, death stew, death salad, death and root vegetables, death burger, death sandwich.

"No!" Caelwyn watches in horror as the bounder attempts to make a meal out of Bigby. He will make a strength check to wrench Bigby away from the large bounder. As he does so he will use Lay on Hands, healing Bigby (regardless of whether he gets him away from the bounder) for 3 hitpoints.

Haemir's eyes widen and fear grips him as he sees poor Bigby mauled, "Kill it Fand quickly". Fand frenzies at the site and she puts in a series of well placed claws and beak pecks (Attack: 19, 20, & nat 20 with 19 as the confirm, for 3, 3 & 8 for a total of 14 dmg)! Includes flank, bless and inspire).

Meanwhile as Haemir moves to flank (K8) and stabs with his Trident (attack:11 for 3 dmg inc +1 inspire) the sun dazzles him and somehow the Trident just feels alien to him now... or maybe it's just the shock of seeing Bigbys predicament... his heart feels like it has forgotten how to beat as his eyes are on the Druid... 'please be ok, please be ok...' he keeps muttering to himself.

Bigby thought to himself, So this is it...this is how it all ends...swallowed by a frog. Life is just waiting for that giant croak...but there was so much to do...and what about Wolfgang...who will look af... Bigby passes out.

Wolfgang is beside himself that his companion has been taken by a frog. Wolfgang attacks the frog with another bite, hoping to get him to let go of Bigby (attack 21: dmg 8).

Sol tries one more daze and with an expectation of despair looks the thing in the eye, only to see it glaze over a bit. Could it be? It worked! (The bounder is dazed.)

Caelwyn wins a tug of war with the beast for Bigby's body and manages to heal him a little as well (3hp recovered, and stabilized.)

Haemir moves to flank, but flails with his trident, while Fand launches a savage series of attacks that flay the bounder into ribbons. Grindar adds two mighty blows to the carnage, dealing an even greater amount of damage.

Bigby slips into unconsciousness with thoughts about Wolfgang slipping by in a touchingly sad montage. Wolfgang goes berserk and rips out great hunks of frog leg in his fury.

'Lil tries to help, but just flings Ramona into the grass nearby.

Xel'Aw heals Bigby as he continues his poem, finishing with a strong 'Win!'

The bounder's eyes go from glazed to dim, as you team up to batter the last life from it. A silence descends over the darkened camp as you catch your breath. The battle is over, as Bigby gasps into consciousness.

It is still the middle of the night. What do you do now?

(Congrats, you each earn 300XP!)

Xel'Aw thanks the group profusely, "It seems this land has it out for me. I believe that is the second time I have blacked out from wounds since I arrived here. And twice that beautiful bird has saved my life. And 'Lil, with the healing!" As he says it, he passes Lil and casts cure light wounds on her healing (10 hit points)

"And I can't possibly give enough credit to Bigby, Grindar, Caelwyn, and Sol for fighting those... those things. Thich - you doing alright? Can't have you dying on us."

And seriously, the first minute we get the chance, I'm buying all the bird seed I can afford. How did you Haemir and Fand meet?"

Grindar overjoyed to see his little friend alive and conscience, runs over to Bigby and offers him a hand to his feet, saying with tears of joy in his eyes, "Looks like we can still be hunting partners brother!" In the short period of time he has been with the party, he has come to see them, and especially Bigby as more then just friends but family, and the thought of losing even one of them would be too much to bear.

"Well Friends", Grindar says while addressing the party, "I suggest we call it a sleep in morning, those of us that were on watch should finish out their watch and then take a second watch, allowing our casters to catch up the sleep time they just lost, and then continue the rotation as normal, so we are all fresh in the morning".

'Lil stomps over to where Ramona landed and retrieves her hammer. There's a whole lotta shame washin' over her, and the only way she knows how to let it out is anger.

Xel's healing fixes all her wounds up. She grunts a quick thanks before she realizes what a butt she's being. She takes a breath, places a hand on Xel's shoulder, and says "Thanks, buddy. That thing darn near took ma'arm off. Everyone, gather round if yer hurt."

'Lil channels all the energy she has until she's out or everyone's healed. She heals for 3, 2, and 4 HP.

Bigby awakens and coninues, "who will look after Wolfgang." He stops and looks around and sees many caring faces. Bigby blinks a few times. Looks at his wounds, and then at the frog. "I died?" he asks the party. "Well thanks to you guys it didn't stick. Yes Caelwyn, I believe I can move, thank you. Grindar, yes hunting although he almost thought hurting, not hunting, but didn't want to look weak in front of his friendsI would love to go hunting with you, but for now maybe some rest first. Wolfgang, it's good to see you my friend. So did we win?" Bigby will do a cure light wounds on both himself and on Wolfgang. (10 for wolfgang and 6 for Bigby). Bigby and Wolfgang determine to get some sleep. "Oh and thanks for helping me." he says to the pack. it wasn't easy for Bigby to admit gratefulness for relying on others, needing someones help, but it was the right thing to say. Maybe this Wolfling really needs others, and maybe in some ways they need him. This reality was bit much for Bigby. You should rest Bigby, figure out the deep thoughts later, he thought to himself.

Haemir smiles when he sees Bigby is ok but doesn't crowd around him. Despite being over a hundred years old he is still somewhat awkward when it comes to all this emotional stuff. When Bigby notices him he gives a warm smile. "I am glad you're still with us brother".

Fand is quick to answer Xel'Aw "I met Haemir when I saved his life"... Haemir shakes his head but gives a secret smile at the parrots bravado, feeling Fand has earnt boasting rights. He is happy to take the back seat and silently collects his net, refolds it and offers to take watch if everyone is healed.

He pats Haemir on the back.

"We did not do too badly. I only wish I could have been more help."

But first, should we try to move away from these bodies, or dispose of them somehow? I am afraid the smell of blood might bring other unwanted visitors..."
