Tuesday April 2nd, 2019 10:29:11 PM

Kiwina starts to volunteer to remain with Aaroth, but after a moment follows Cecil out. Aside from wanting to hear what his fellow centaur wants to say, it occurs to him that Aaroth will not want to leave without Cecil but the Petals might decide to leave with Cecil. That will depend on what Cecil has to say.

Angus stays hidden in the room, keeping an eye on Aaroth and if it should become necessary, sneak attack with his short bow.

He hopes the Petals don't leave him behind with the demon and the strange gamblers.

Having been virtually dismissed by the supposed demon Falco is seething with anger. He looks to see if anyone else is staying in the room with Aaroth {Perception: 13} and fails to note Angus hiding. Thinking everyone else is leaving he take a spot near the door and keeps his large golden eyes focused on gambler he now sees as a kidnapper and potential slaver.

[Perception 16] Finnian looks around the room and seeing that nothing is amiss asks about the game. "I've heard from more than a few people that you sir enjoy highstakes games. Clearly you do if you won a ship off of Cecil as you have claimed. What's your game? Or is it the thrill of the wager?" Finnian stays in the room and talk to Aroth.

The Game is Afoot... Part II (DM Dan)
Wednesday April 3rd, 2019 6:53:27 PM

Tsak Rezar waits to see how things play out.
Finnian queries Aaroth’s taste in games.
Elyas questions Cecil to get a clearer picture.
Rolth Niheow suggests watching Aaroth
Kiwina would wait, but he’s too interested in what Cecil has to say.
Falco Ambersier stays at the door, watching Aaroth, but so he can hear what Cecil has to say.
Angus Macgrump remains in the room watching the octopus headed man.

Cecil brings you all into the main hall, while Aaroth responds to Finnian.

He smiles widely.

“The Thrill of the wager, but my favourite game is Taur Isle Pudding.”

Cecil looks at Aaroth.

“Don’t worry. He won’t leave without either me or the Herald

He smiles sadly and then slightly embarrassedly.

“Sooo… I may have made a pretty big mistake here… see I heard Aaroth was doing a big game with high wagers, and I figured I could beat him!”

He pauses, looking a little ashamed.

“So I bet the Herald... but Aaroth was too good, he beat me and took my ship. One of his rules is you stay with him until you pay him… or work the debt off. I tried to escape, so he had me bound and dragged around with him... “

He looks a little upset.

“If you get the town guard, they’ll side with him, because what he’s done is within the law according to the rules he laid down when we started gambling… so now I either have to give him the Herald or work off a debt to the value of the Herald and that could take the rest of my life!!”

He looks at each of you, pleading with his eyes.

“Please! Win the Herald back for me!”

Wednesday April 3rd, 2019 10:57:00 PM

"Last time we saw the Herald, she wasn't in great shape. Unless you can repair her, why not give her Aaroth? He'll have no use for so much driftwood. What are we missing?"

Kiwina is not found of games of chance in the first place. Unless Aaroth is willing to take bets on a suitable contest of skill, he sees no chance of winning the ship back by Aaroth's rules.

Rolth Niheow (BatMark) (36/36 HP | AC: 14; Touch: 11; CMD: 19) | Glaive +6 1d10+6 x3 | Paws (2) +4 1d4+2 x2| Status: None

Rolth sees no way to prove that Aaroth cheated, so calling the guard isn't going to be much help. We have little evidence that he consorted with the pirates either, even though it is probably true. Rolth halfway thinks that Cecil deserves to lose his ship for being so stupid, but he did help us win the Taurnament...

"OK, maybe we can help. What can you tell us about this game that might help us win? And dear Petals, what do we have to improve the odds for us? We certainly must watch for cheating. And we do have these anything potions, which at least can help us with guidance occasionally. What else do we have?"

Tsak sees the logic in Kiwina's thinking, and agrees with it.
He does wonder, however, what might become of the Heralds crew and the magical creatures that kept it afloat. He wouldn't like to see them bonded to this octo-demon.

Meanwhile back in the room, Angus is trying to remain hidden thought the layout and furniture may not give any cover. He puts down his bow and concentrates on watching Aaroth and the other players in the room.

(Perception = 11) Angus may be just too weirded out by this whole situation, now that he has had time to think about it.

Cecil, it sounds to me like you have to give him your ship. it's not quite as.... valuable... as it used to be, but give him what's left and maybe you can be finished with him. We don't have anything to stake against your ship that the demon would likely accept, aside from our own ship. and let me tell you, we aren't putting the Rose up for some gamble with a demon. pay the demon off, and come join our crew.

if he has a chance to talk to the other petals before going back into the room, Elyas says:
It seems to me that Cecil made a dumb move by gambling with a demon. but it doesn't sound like he was cheated or coerced into it. he sought it out... I don't think there's much we can do for him. I certainly don't want to go gambling with the same demon and lose more to him. it's foolishness to gamble with a demon in the first place, much more so to try to fix the problem with MORE gambling...

The Game is Afoot... Part III (DM Dan)
Thursday April 4th, 2019 4:36:25 PM

Tsak Rezar ponders the fate of those who serve on the ship should Aaroth take it.
Finnian
Elyas tries to convince Cecil to give up his ship.
Rolth Niheow, against his better judgement tries to figure out how they can help.
Kiwina tries to figure out what the party might be missing.
Falco Ambersier continues to attempt to speak with Aaroth.
Angus Macgrump watches the game though it appears to be a simple card game, not one with any gambling going on currently.

Aaroth chuckles at Falco’s suggestion.

“You do not think playing cards requires skill? Shame on you. I would have thought you were smarter than that.”

---

Cecil looks at the rest of the group.

“I know… it was stupid… I get it… I just… the Herald is all I have in the world, I can’t lose it. I appreciate the offer… but losing the Herald would be like losing my soul… you guys understand you have the Rose...”

He sighs.

“I know Aaroth would play against you, one of you could take my place at the table… but I guess if you can’t help I’ll have to figure some other way out of this…”

Finnian smiles at Falco's suggestion. "Now that would be a contest that you and I would do fine in. I haven't heard of this pudding game but I might fancy a hand or two. Though if you are wagering entire ships then it may be too rich for my blood. Finnian contemplates his options and how best he could aid the party.

"What did Aaroth wager against the Herald? And how can we even the odds against the cheater? Maybe if more than one of us plays? Maybe someone could detect magic to make sure he isn’t using magic to cheat. Others could watch him closely. If he cheats, then his stake is forfeit, right? And what can we wager against the Herald? Kiwina is getting exasperated. "Of course we understand! But we've also seen the shape the Herald is in! If we managed to win, will you actually have your ship back or just a figurehead?"

Kiwina is not himself willing to enter a card game with Aaroth. He still thinks that Aaroth won the wreckage that used to be the Herald.

"Last we saw of the Herald was the skeleton of a ship in the water next to the Outsider, being sneered at by the crew of that black monstrosity."

I understand that you want your own ship but, trust us, the Herald may not be your best option here. We aren't professional gamblers. We are adventurers however, and we are all willing to work with you to get a new ship. Work with us and be free or be dragged around in chains by this creature, it's up to you. You may have to give the Herald up so that you can get something so much better!

Exhausted by the words pouring out of him like water Tsak slumps down at the nearest table and waits for Cecil to make his decision.

Falco agrees with Finnian and continues speaking.

"Oh playing cards is a skill, no doubt. I just thought you were a real gambler who would wager on many things not someone who only played when you are the expert. I see, a game of physical skill is too much for you. Its ok to not to want to bother with someone of my stature, I get it."

I'm sorry Cecil, I don't see any reason why we should go up against Aaroth. I'm pretty sure that's what he wants. get us to bet something big, take that from us and convince us to double down. you can never win this sort of game. the herald is lost. face it. it is either a pile of flotsam, or it belongs to a demon now. you were very kind to this crew, and we want to help, but this isn't really going to help you. we would happily take you on our crew, or even help find another ship for you in the future. but there is no way we're going up against a demon with our ship on the line.

The Game is Afoot... Part IV (DM Dan)

Tsak Rezar almost gives up, still trying to convince Cecil to give up his beloved ship.
Finnian potentially volunteers as tribute.
Elyas fails to see the wisdom in continuing to fight for broken pieces of wood.
Rolth Niheow questions more to explore all the options.
Kiwina again makes mention of how damaged the Herald is and how it may not be worth fighting for.
Falco Ambersier attempts to goad Aaroth into doing something foolish.
Angus Macgrump continues to prepare for something to happen.

Aaroth chuckles at Falco’s response.

“So you want me to trade a game that I’m good at, for one you’re good at? How is that smart?”

He laughs a little louder.

“But alright, I’ll indulge you Birdman.”

He gets up and draws a few concentric circles on a piece of parchment, then pushes a small nail through it into the wooden wall.

“Go ahead, take your shot. Show me how it’s done.”

((OoC: If you wish to fire, make an attack roll. Higher score means more central))

---

Cecil shakes his head.

“I can repair the Herald, don’t worry about that.” He sighs. “Look, he’s a demon thing, he’ll probably want a favour out of you, or to take you as a servant, or worse slave. That he would wager against the Herald...” He pauses, as if unsure how to continue. “Or you could just fight him for my freedom, but that wouldn’t go down well with the guard…”

How do you choose to try and free Cecil?

Angus continues to watch as Aaroth challenges Falco. Aaroth's gleeful acceptance of the challenge causes Angus to consider the following:

"Whatever means he uses to cheat at cards, must also be useful here or he would not be so confident. I may not know magic, but I know about misdirection and allowing your mark to see what you wish them to see. Aaroth must either have means to influence his mark's performance or get his mark to believe he has lost somehow. How can I let the fiesty bird-man (I have really got to learn their names) know he is being scammed?

"Hey fellows, we will play the only game that we can win, namely, the one that Aaroth does not know he is playing. He assumes the guards will back him because he won the Herald and Cecil's obedience was part of the deal. What he does not know is that we have explicit direction from the local Lord and from the Purple Duke himself. The former told us to gather information and report it to him. The latter directed us to capture Aaroth. So I propose this: We send a message to Lord Marcus, telling him the location of Aaroth and requesting that he send the guards to assist in Aaroth's detentiion, per the orders of the Purple Duke himself. Our job is merely to make sure that Aaroth remains here until the Lord and his men can arrive. That should not be too hard, we can play the fool, ask to be taught the game at hand, and so forth. What think you?"

If the Herald can be repaired, then we should help Cecil to do so. She's a remarkable ship, Kiwina thinks.

"I agree that playing cards with Aaroth is playing to his strengths. While I am not sure that there is much skill in a single play of the cards, there has to be skill in putting several together and consistently winning. In fact. . . Cecil, have you seen him play many different kinds of games, or does he stick to just one thing?" If he wins at lots of things, it's more likely to be some sort of cheat than it is that he is skilled at all those things.

The Game is Afoot... Part V (DM Dan)
Monday April 8th, 2019 6:38:17 PM

Tsak Rezar ruminates on getting a message to Lord Marcus.
Finnian supports his friend in the competition.
Elyas says it should be left up to the party to decide, or just have an executive decision.
Rolth Niheow discusses the possibility of playing for time.
Kiwina queries Aaroth’s game of choice.
Falco Ambersier shoots the piece of paper almost straight in the middle, while talking to Aaroth.
Angus Macgrump tries to keep an eye out to see if Aaroth is cheating.

Aaroth seems to have had enough discussion for now, and stands up calling to all the Petals.

“You all seem to have a few brain cells between you to share, so let me ask you, would I be so brazen to use ALL of the Purple Duke’s gambling houses if I was afraid he would come after me for doing my business? Short answer, no. Long answer, no of course not. As such call them if you must, but they shan’t do anything.”

He shakes his head.

“Now, I tell you what, I can gather from your discussions that the Herald is not in the best condition, and you look like… semi competent adventurers. So I am willing to offer you a deal… you bet a task against the boat.”

He pauses.

“What I mean is you bet your services against Cecil’s dilapidated ship, if you win, you get the ship. If I win, you do a task for me. It won’t be anything against your sensibilities, I promise. Perhaps go and fetch some artifact for me, or something along those lines. But I will call upon it another time, it probably won’t be immediately.”

He looks at each member of the Petals.

“What say you?”

Angus doesn't feel that he should speak for anyone else. Even though he just met the Petals, he likes their style and would like to see more of what they will do next.

But this Aaroth makes him uneasy and Angus would just like to be elsewhere. Angus wonders if the Petals just should say "yes" and use it as an opportunity to leave town.

"I say you are a liar, a cheat, and a trickster. Did you think we wouldn't notice that you only bet the ship and not Cecil's freedom? Fie, you are dastardly! Let us discuss more proper terms. First, we must bet something of equal value, and you offer only a wrecked ship. I propose, if my fellow Petals will accept, the following. We wager a task, to be determined at a later date, that does not go against our morals, ethics, or sensibilities, as determined solely by the unanimous agreement of the Eight Petaled Rose. You wager the Herald, Cecil's freedom, and the return of all else that you have won from Cecil. In addition, you will surrender yourself to the Purple Duke to be tried on charges of cheating at the games, support for piracy, and slavery, in addition to any other charges that the Duke may decide to bring. So it it is the service of eight balanced by the cooperation of one. This seems fair to me. What say you, Petals and Aaroth?"

This creature sent the undead pirates after us, several of our crew died. Surely that gives us the right to bring him to the Purple Duke for justice without the interference of the local guards. We can work out what to do about Cecil and the boat when he's in chains.

Tsak Rezar has thoughts about proof, how much do they actually have?
Finnian backs Rolth’s idea.
Elyas believes that leaving the Herald is the way to go.
Rolth Niheow starts making more of a concrete deal.
Kiwina tries to hammer out exactly what would be expected of them.
Falco Ambersier is a little upset he didn’t get to see Aaroth skills.
Angus Macgrump tries to look out in case a quick exit is needed.

Aaroth smiles at Kiwina.

“Good point, if I may?” He takes the bow and fires an arrow, which doesn’t even leave the bow, it simple falls out and onto the ground. He harrumps.

“Here is your coin.” And he hands Falco the agreed sum.

He smiles, a sparkle appearing in his eye when Kiwina and Rolth each speak.

“Very well. I have an object I want you to procure from a ruin. I am still investigating to find out exactly where it is. I would like you to go in and collect it for me once I have discovered it’s exact location. I intend to play against all of you, only those of you that lose to me are required to take up the task. Each of you here will join this game…”

He indicates the table with a few other gamblers.

“In turn, as players are knocked out, another one of you may take their place, until only one remains. If I am knocked out first, I will return to you ownership of the Herald. Which as he said…” he indicates Rolth. “Would include the freedom of Cecil, as he is only being held until he pays his debt. I do not wish to cheat you, or anyone else. Cecil bit off more than he could chew and is now paying the price, or more, trying to get you to pay the price. Since he seems to feel you owe him something.”

He shrugs.

“Alternatively you could leave and Cecil will remain here with me. So here it is a simply as I can put it for you.”

He takes a breath.

“We will play Taur Isle Pudding, with two of your players joining the game. Anytime a player is eliminated another one of those of you who are here will join the table, either in place of one of the other gamblers or in place of one of your compatriots. Any one of you adventurers who is knocked out is required to, once I find the location, search a ruin for an artifact I want recovered. If I am eliminated, I will return to you the Herald and free Cecil. All this nonsense about answering for breaking laws will be ignored, as simply put, I have broken no laws.”

He looks at each of you individually.

“What say you?”

As Aaroth explains the wager and the others agree his shoulder slump a bit.

"He seems to love the idea of the game so we only need play until one of us is eliminated. If we are going to play no need to give him the enjoyment of a long game. We stand together, if one is eliminated we are all going for this artifact anyway."

He pauses

"Unless there is some other incentive to extending the game."

Tsak Rezar agrees
Finnian also takes a shot at the paper, it hitting centre point again.
Elyas has his reservations but agrees.
Rolth Niheow agrees, as long as all of the Petals do.
Kiwina also agrees, assuming the rest of the Petals d.
Falco Ambersier attempts to just have one person play, and if lost they will all retrieve the artifact anyway.
Angus Macgrump offers to join and fill in a member of the party.

Aaroth smiles, and waves his hand at Finnian.

“I made no wager with you.”

He sits down at the table, and indicates the two seats.

“Two of you must begin with me.”

He looks at Falco. “ How about if just one of you beat me, then you will be free to go, how does that sound as an incentive to continue?”

He smiles predatorially.

“Now, the rules of the game are simple. There are 8 cards that can be dealt, 1, 2, 3, Jack, Queen, King, 7 and 8. We will have one round of exchanging cards as needed. Then it is the person with the best hand in the same manner as poker. With a round of betting both before and after exchange. The slight exception is this, you must always have one hand on the table, and for every seven or eight you have in your final hand, you will receive a slap from another player. After five slaps, you are eliminated. How does that sound to you?”

Assuming you agree he deals out 5 cards to each player. You have a total of 20 chips for each player.

Angus Macgrump keeps a close eye on Aaroth.

Aaroth bets 3 chips to begin with then 5 more. ((Final hand - 3,3, 5, 5, 6 - Two pair))

The second player bets 2 chips, then 2 more ((Final hand - 3, 3, 3, 4, 5 - Three of a Kind))

((Ooc: Sorry I didn't make it completely clear, it's like Yahtzee or Five Card Draw, so you keep some cards from one hand to the next, you can discard and redraw any number of them.))

Aaroth smiles as although he loses some chips, two of the other players have received a couple of slaps.

Tsak gets a two pair, but still loses out, some of his chips going to the drunk next to Aaroth, who got three of a kind.

Rolth is promptly slapped by one of the other players who is clearly drunk, and hits him so hard he falls off the chair (Take 1 point of non lethal damage).

Tsak has 6 chips left.

Rolth has 16.

Aaroth has 12

Drunk 1 has 60, having got a big pot.

Falco Ambersier watches the game continue
Angus Macgrump watches the game continue.

((OoC: Just to be clear, when you roll a first hand, you must keep at least one of those cards, but may re-roll up to four of them. If this is unclear, please e-mail me and I’ll try to clear it up some more.))

Aaroth gets (1, 1, 1, 2, 2,) as his final hand, betting 3 chips, then a further 3 chips. (Full house)

Drunk 1 gets (3, 7, 7, 8, 8) as his final hand, betting 1 chip, then 1 chip, and is immediately slapped by Rolth, Aaroth and the other two drunks. (Two pair, but four slaps), and is knocked to the ground, where he remains for a few moments drinking another beer before sitting up and rejoining the game. His face is already beginning to welt up.

Drunk 2 gets (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) as his final hand, betting 3 chips, then 3 more chips.

Drunk 3 gets (1, 1, 2, 4, 5) as his final hand,betting 2 chips then 1 chip.

The pot stands at 23 chips, which all go to Aaroth as he wins the hand.

Kiwina Highlight to display spoiler: {Aaroth is betting in an attempt to get others to bet higher. There does appear to be some reason behind it, but it is not clear at this stage. }

Aaroth chuckles.

“Ah it seems my friend here…” he refers to Drunk 1 “... is perhaps not too long for this game. If he is eliminated by losing all his chips, then he is out. Drunk 1 gets ((1, 5, 6, 6, 7)) Having bet 2 chips then 1 chip, and immediately gets slapped very hard by Rolth, knocking him off his seat, and out of the game for good.

Rolth keeps at it, even if he suspects that he is being suckered by Aaroth into raising the stakes.

First hand = K,7,7,2,3 bet 1 chip
Second hand = K,1,4,4,7 bet 1 chip and get a slap!

Elyas calmly sits down behind one of the open stacks of chips and waves for cards to be dealt.
first hand = 1,2,5,8,8
Elyas almost sighs when he sees two 8s in his first hand. but glancing around at the number of petals left, and knowing the best option would be to goad Aaroth into losing some chips, Elyas goes for a ballsy play. he keeps both 8s and draws 2 more cards, looking right at Aaroth as he pushes in 5 chips.
new hand = 2,2,8,8,8. Elyas pushes in another 10 chips and braces for the slapping.

Finnian moves to see if Falco has any insight to share.
Elyas joins and immediately bets 15 chips, however, he has a full house!
Rolth Niheow ends with a pair and a slap, putting 2 chips on the pair.
Kiwina joins the game, betting only a pair of chips on a pair.
Falco Ambersier tries to get to a seat, but is beaten there by his allies.
Angus Macgrump pays attention to Aaroth Highlight to display spoiler: {Aaroth seems unusually confident in the game. Despite the apparent effect of chance, but you cannot see him cheating.}

Aaroth smiles widely as more Petals sit down. He doesn’t seem too bothered by the fact his chip pile isn’t the biggest. He is unfazed by Elyas’ large bets, almost finding them amusing.

Aaroth bets 3 chips, then bets a further 6, ((Final hand - 1, 2, 3, J, Q))

Drunk 2 bets 2 chips, then another 2, ((Final hand - 3, J, Q, K, K))

Drunk 3 bets 4 chips, then goes all in on the second round ((Final hand - K, K, K, 8, 8))

The pot stands at 49 chips, and both Elyas and Drunk 3 get full houses, Elyas is immediately slapped by both drunks and Aaroth, incredibly hard, knocking him from his seat (take 3 non lethal damage). Drunk 3 is slapped by Elyas and Aaroth, knocking him out of his chair where he just laughs and orders another ale.

Elyas and Drunk 3 split the pot, with the odd going to the player of the two with the least number of chips (Drunk 3).

The chip totals stand at

Rolth - 42 (2 slaps)
Drunk 2 - 15

"One could possibly win by simply playing conservatively and patiently while never keeping 7s or 8s in one's hand. You would only have to outlast the others, let the others get slapped out "

Angus goes over to Finnian and Falco and as quietly as possible whispers this observation to them.

Angus Macgrump keeps an eye on Aaroth, thinking that perhaps no cheating is going on after all.

Aaroth bets 2 chips, then a further 2. He ends with a full House 1s full of Kings ((1, 1, 1, K, K))

Drunk 2 bets 2 chips, then another 2 chips, but ends on King high ((1, 2, 3, Q, K))

Drunk 3 bets 1 chip, then another 1 chip, he ends with three of a kind! Rolth Niheow decides to begin dealing, taking the deck from Aaroth, attempting to bluff the rules.
Kiwina tries a gamble, but it doesn’t pay off.

Aaroth shrugs when Rolth takes the cards, shuffles them and deals them.

He bets 2 chips, then a further 2 chips. ((3, J, J, J, K))

Drunk 2 bets 2 chips, then 2 more chips (1, 2, 3, 4, 8)) and immediately gets slapped by Aaroth, who looks glaring at Rolth to slap Kiwina and Elyas to slap Rolth (Both please take 1 point of Non Lethal). Aaroth then slaps Falco once and looks at Finnian to slap him again (Falco, take 2 non lethal damage)

Rolth smiles predatorily at Aaroth. He is inwardly pleased that this game is of no consequence. We have permission from the Duke to capture Aaroth, despite his protestations of innocence. We agreed to play under duress, which in Rolth's mind absolves the Petals of any responsibility to carry out anything untoward on behalf of Aaroth. Aaroth will not be able to determine the location of the artifact that he seeks while he rots in the Duke's prison. And if he is dead because he resisted arrest, well, game over, right?

Thus satisfied, he keeps playing, trying to see whether we can get more clues to Aaroth's tricks. He looks for marked cards, Aaroth hiding cards up his sleeves or in tentacles, and any other such antics.

Elyas quickly excuses himself from the back room for a few minutes. back in the common room he asks around for a deck of cards, first checking with the owner then just asking around. Assuming he can find one, he brings it back into the back room. when it is Aaroth's deal again, Elyas will place the new deck in front of the demon while the previous dealer is gathering the cards from the table.

My dear Aaroth, I couldn't help but notice some of the cards have been damaged. see here, these cards here have some unfortunate markings on them. I have found a new deck to be used.

as Aaroth deals, Elyas watches very carefully, loudly pointing out a misdeal when Aaroth tries to do the same thing Elyas spotted from the last time he dealt.
Oh, Aaroth, I do believe that card was meant for Finnian was it not? perhaps you have had too much to drink, but generally the deal should come from the top of the deck, should it not? perhaps you should pass the deal on to the next player who is maybe not so distracted as you.

At this point Elyas doesn't really care much about the etiquette of not butting into a game he is no longer a part of, as he is under the surface seething about the obvious cheating from Aaroth. For now he is opting to try to at least pretend to be helpful and polite, though really if this wasn't a demon of unknown strength Elyas would rather flip the table and start a fight.

Elyas has been watching. In response to his concerns, Elyas seeks out a new deck of cards. He is sold one in haste for 1 gold piece. He offers the deck to Aaroth saying, “My dear Aaroth, I couldn't help but notice some of the cards have been damaged. see here, these cards here have some unfortunate markings on them. I have found a new deck to be used.”

Aaroth replies dryly, “Surely you must know that I cannot simply accept any deck offered to me. We do have rules here you know.”

He responds to the seemingly distracted and silent Finnian, ”Ah, sitting out a hand? You should know it will still cost you to sit at the table.” One of Aaroth’s tentacle reaches up and casually scoops away 2 of Finnian’s chips to the center of the table.

He deals out cards to the drunk. Dismayed at the potential slaps, the drunk bets two chips and ask for 4 more cards. He best 2 more and ends with 1,2,J, K, 7 and is soundly slapped by Aaroth.

Then Aaroth deals out his own cards. He bets 5 chips, and then take another 4 cards, betting another 10. He ends with a 1 and 4 Queens! Incredible luck! He smiles at Falco, ”Well, it seemed that whatever gods you pray to are fickle and have given their blessing to me instead.”

He scoops the chips to himself. And then two tentacles slap Falco’s feathered face as he says, ”Ahhh. Five slaps. Pity that puts you out of the game. Is there another that would take his place? Things simply don’t look good for your friend’s ship I’m afraid.”

For Falco, Highlight to display spoiler: {Falco is pretty sure something was not right with all of this.}

"You are a skilled player calamari head I will give you that." he stairs eyes unblinking "These decks, with some old and some new cards, do however make you look like a cheat." He looks at the vaiour drunks and then back to Aaroth. "Not that I would call you a cheat without proof, just saying it makes you look like a cheat. You know what I mean right? He pauses again looking to those the last the game that are not petals. [i] {Bad diplomacy roll.} [/b]

I see how it is Aaroth. you do not want to play with any deck other than the one you have marked. not even one purchased at a reputable gambling house. I have seen your dealing, you do not deal in the way normally accepted in a game of chance.

as Aaroth is sorting out chips from the idle Finnian and the loss of Falco, Elyas deftly scoops up hanfuls of cards. he lays them out, including the 4 queens from Aaroth. now having seen the marks on some cards and the way Aaroth shuffles he is expecting to see matching marks on the 4 queens
18 perception.

Assuming he finds what i think he will find:
It is as I thought. these four queens are marked for Aaroth to deal them to himself. I hereby call you a cheat, with these as my witness. I declare the current bet void, and Cecil's ship forfeit. Your choice Aaroth, you can cede this game and we will walk away with our friend, or we will stop this game and report to the Duke and the law enforcement. or, we can deal with this as men did in my hometown when a cheat was caught in the act. Elyas punctuates this statement by dancing a small flame in his palm.

Finnian has a pair of jacks and bets two chips with no slaps. Highlight to display spoiler: {He sees nothing unusual. Wait - is that octopus sweating?}

Kiwina has two pair with no slaps, but only bets two chips.

Falco Ambersier is now out of the game. He watches carefully as he loudly calls Aaroth a cheat while saying he’s not calling Aaroth a cheat. Highlight to display spoiler: {Even his sharp eyes see nothing unusual. Wait - is that octopus sweating?}

Rolth Niheow is disappointed that none of Duke's representatives seem to be present. He whispers to Elyas, "Elyas, this demon has no shame, but the Duke's men or the proprietor might be interested in his cheating. Perhaps you could bring them here to see." As for the game, he has 3 of a kind and no slaps, betting a total of 6.

Elyas tells Aaroth that he is not dealing properly.

Aaroth deals cards out to the drunk who bets 5 and asks for three more cards. He bets 5 more, ending with two pair, kings high and is due a slap.

Aaroth finishes his hand, asking for three more cards and ending with three of a kind having bet a total of 10 himself. He says, ”Ah, you see. This one has won the pot, and I am due a slap.” The pot of 30 chips as is won by Rolth!.

Elyas grabs the cards and looks carefully at them. Highlight to display spoiler: {He can see that some are a bit more worn than others and marked is some way. Sure enough, some of the face cards seem to have similar marks, but they are hard to see.} ”It is as I thought. The face cards are marked for Aaroth to deal them to himself. I hereby call you a cheat, with these as my witness. I declare the current bet void, and Cecil's ship forfeit. Your choice Aaroth, you can cede this game and we will walk away with our friend, or we will stop this game and report to the Duke and the law enforcement. or, we can deal with this as men did in my hometown when a cheat was caught in the act.” Elyas punctuates this statement by dancing a small flame in his palm.

Aaroth steps back from the table as he pulls out another deck. He smiles though the tentacles as he replies, “Keep the cards if you wish. I have more. Call whatever guards you wish - I am prepared for that. Make whatever accusations justify your actions. I am prepared for that as well. Walk away from the game if you wish, but Cecil will remain in my debt.”

All attention is drawn to the table, as a few of the onlookers rise from their chairs with bottles or clubs in their hands. Aaroth steps back from the table holding the new deck.

The room is silent and tense. Then the drunk says, “Heyyy! Hey, Hey, Hey. Don quit now. Ahm na doin so bad!"

I think, however, you underestimate who you play with. We are the 8 petaled Rose, the champions of the Taurnament, heroes of the Sargrass incident. we are known and celebrated in these islands. our word as witness naming you a cheat will make it significantly harder for you to pull any new bets with the people of this region. give up the captain and his broken ship, or lose out on the possibility of many future gambles. is that a bet you are willing to make?

As Task turns to examine the room he spots a young man whose clothing is wrinkled, his hair is a mess, he has a patchy beard or perhaps he started to shave and didn't finish or started and stopped in a different spot a few times. He's messy looking. His equipment could be taken better care of, but is serviceable. The man was favoring one leg as he stood there with a longbow in one hand and an arrow in the other. There are three empty pints sitting at his place at the table and a walking stick leaning against the chair behind him.

The young man was average height with a little extra around the middle and his hands heavily calloused from work. He might have been a strong fellow but with his loose mail and baggy clothing it was impossible to tell about his build.

At his feet is an old pack that might have once born a military insignia, but it had long since fallen from the leather pack. Stuffed into the pack and extending out of the top one one side was a stick or something wrapped in an old blanket. By the condition of the rope and cloth that bind the item it hasn't been opened in years. The young man wore a simple soldiers belt with a well used shortsword in a battered sheath that was rimed in dirt as if it hadn't been drawn in ages. The young man looks tired, his eyes are droopy, and when he moves it's as if it takes a great effort to do so, yet his grip on the bow is firm and he seems confident about how to use it.

"I'm terribly sorry, but divine to make your acquaintance. This chap ah cheat? Goodness me!" he said to Tsak with a nod at the half-orc.

Elyas likewise calls Aaroth as a cheater, clarifying the heroes he faces and that he cannot win now.
Kiwina notes the marks on the cards and watches the others’ reactions.
Rolth and Falco also call Aaroth out, telling him his deal with Cecil is over, and are ready to attack the octopoid creature.
Tsak puts his hand on his sword and is ready for anything.
Mak, a plainly dressed man with a bow across the table from Tsak rises and says, "I'm terribly sorry, but divine to make your acquaintance. This chap ah cheat? Goodness me!"

So to have a number of others in the bar risen from their seats. Most are looking nervously around and start to rush out of the room, anticipating a fight. Others rise and look menacingly at the heroes that are speaking up, holding broken bottles or clubs. And there are a few in various stats if inebriation that seem interested in what’s about to go down.

Aaroth barks back, ”You do gooders are all alike. You threaten the authorities, but you don’t know my influence. Send me to jail and I’ll be out in a trice. But it seem you all need to learn our local ways, along with some manors!”

And with that, Aaroth back up and spins a card out out behind some of the heroes, and where it lands a weird mound of fatty flesh springs up as with half-formed limbs and a dripping tumorous face. This creature attacks Angus. It misses. And it’s about the grossest thing Angus has ever seen.

For we have come at the behest of your rightful lord,
The Duke Violet, his right arms of justice,
Set against the left hand of darkness,
Which you see set before us.
We, the Eight Petaled Rose,

Lest they be cast down into eternal fire,
Burning for all eternity with the demon Aaroth,
If they should serve him rather than all that is right with the Wold."
