Getting To know You

The Emerald Kingdom (DM SteveK)
Tuesday April 9th, 2019 7:15:07 AM

OOC: Each PC gets 4,500xp for a great solution and heroic role-playing!
.......

Wilford congratulates Garrl on the provided information, and asks a couple more questions. The Orc shrugs, he doesn’t know the answer to either question.

Hmerrin is impatient, though he had to admit Toston picked up some valuable info!

Toston gives Garrl 10 gold pieces and promises to follow his advice with the Unicorn Tribe. Grudgingly, Garrl admits Unicorn Tribe is ‘Good’, “... like Alemi-Good or Domi-Good. Griffin Tribe like Domi better than Alemi. Domi likes to fight.”

Desdichado nods to Garrl and walks back to the skiff with the others.

Sarge listens to Garrl's explanation with a puzzled expression. This stuff is clearly important to her new companions, but Sarge can't make head or tail of it.

GafferHawk keeps his present shape and flies with the group over to the skiff. Feeling glad that they seem to have resolved the situation without much issue.

……

It looks like Hmerrin is correct; there is nothing left to do here. And so our heroes retrace their steps, around the latrine trees to the gully that leads from the plains of Izen to the Peaseblossom shore. By the time the Tide gets to the skiffs, it is full morning. The Catfish crew wave at the heroes as the skiffs are rowed to the flatboat, and stories exchanged as the river craft is made ready to sail. “Nicely done”, compliments Jhared, “that toll would have ruined me.”
The next three days pass without significant incident. The Catfish has a following breeze and the sail does most of the work against the sluggish current. Occasionally on the banks there is an Orc party loping along, or shouting and waving fists in the air, but the river is wide and Jhared can keep a bowshot away from the aggressive tribes.

The fourth day begins with the Catfish passing Fort Hospitality and rowed under the Trade Road Bridge that spans the PeaseBlossom (the crew had to disassemble the mast to pass under). By mid-morning the Tide see not just the occasional tree, but an entire forest on either bank. Gaffer knows the Culverwood well, and the sense that the Forest itself is watching the heroes is strong.

By evening, the Catfish has docked at Karri, the Emerald City, and Jhared has shaken the hand of the six heroes. “Thank you for your help. You are always welcome aboard the Catfish or any boat I captain.”

Looking about, the Tide sees there is about an hour’s light left in the day. Karri is a city that is at home in the forest, swaths of grass and many trees are among the buildings. Many buildings are made to blend into the natural terrain and flora too. Upriver, in the distance and glinting in the late sun, is the Tower of Saryd, the headquarters of the Emerald Wyrms, that Dragon Consortium group that killed the evil dragon Parnoth and freed the entire Emerald Kingdom from Parnoth’s insidious clutches. They are retired now, but their stories remain an inspiration across the Wold!

But The Tide is not here for visiting: they are following a map! What do they do now?

As the company stands on the dock deciding where to head for the evening, Desdichado asks the group, "So, I've heard a bit about a map and I believe one of you has mentioned treasure, too. What can you tell Sarge and I about this? Do we know where we're heading? Do we know if this is real treasure - gold and jewels - or is this the metaphorical type?"

Assuming the party is looking for a place to spend the night in town and continue the discussion in private, he helps look for a place that looks reputable. If the party prefers to camp, he's open to that, too.

Hmerrin(HP 100/100 AC:26 T:15 FF:22 CMD:26)

Hmerrin glances over at Dez.
"Let's find a place to crash. Then we can let you know what you signed up for."

The lad asks Jhared, "Any recommendations for a decent inn with some room to spread out in?"

If the captain can't come up with anything, Hmerrin resorts to asking passerby where the WLA house is, and then asking the WLA folks where they can stay.

Toston Lotor(Hugh Crosmun) [HP: 67/67; AC:31/20/29- CMD 26

Toston says, "If the good captain knows of a place to stay I'm okay with that suggestion otherwise I don't mind trying to use my rank of Officer in the WLA to see if I could wrangle us a place to say. They say rank has its privileges no?"

Ivan says to Wil, "Some adventuring company you are in. They don't even know where they are going to stay. I have to imagine you'll end up misreading the map."

Wil says to Ivan, "Why do you have to be so negative? I'm sure our new friends will be able to help us get where we are going and find what we are looking for."

Sarge [AC 21; HP 61/61] (Kathy)
Tuesday April 9th, 2019 11:09:42 PM

Sarge looks around with a slight frown. Yep, it's an elf city all right. Everything aboveground, exposed to Domi only knows what, buildings that were all frou-frou ornamentation and no defenses. She sighs. "Yeah, let's find a place to stay," she says.

"And yet it still stands" Gaffer replies to Sarge, intended as a jest.

"It all looks very comfortable here, I'm sure we can find somewhere easily enough" Gaffer smiles at the sight of the green city, passively following the others and taking in the view.

WLA Chapterhouse (DM SteveK)
Wednesday April 10th, 2019 7:25:00 AM

Desdichado wants to know more about this map, and assumes the Tide will be more open after they find a place to spend the night.

Hmerrin agrees they need a place to crash before letting Dez and Sarge know what they ‘signed up for’. When Jhared has no suggestions (the half-elf sleeps aboard and the crew… Jhared is sure that the adventurers aren’t looking for the establishments frequented by the crew), Hmerrin asks passersby about the WLA, the Woldian League of Adventurers.

Toston agrees with Hmerrin, commenting that a newly commissioned WLA Officer should have some privileges!

Wilford has an inner dialogue.

Sarge frowns at the elfness of the town; all decoration and no substance. She sighs, and helps look for a place to stay.

Gaffer jests with Sarge and enjoys the sights of Karri, the Emerald City.
…….

The luck of Wardd or the careful planning of Alemi smiles upon The Tide Plus Two, as nearly anyone they ask know of the WLA, recognize the badges of Hmerrin and Toston, and respectfully, helpfully, point them to their destination; the Chapterhouse of the local Woldian League of Adventurers! (Gaffer notices several figures who are druids. In fact, there seem to be more druids here than clerics!)

The sturdy building is coincidentally adjacent to Emerald City’s most notorious Inn, The Green Dragon, and halfway up the hill that most of the city resides. The Tower-and-Glyph symbol proudly declaring this as the home and succor for adventurers. The Tide can see the WLA is well-respected here; quite a difference from the near-clandestine operations of the WLA in Dirt City!

Toston and Hmerrin are quickly able to secure rooms from Old Luther, a grizzled and retired fighter/rogue who currently runs the place. Out of courtesy, he keeps the side of his face that was nearly sliced off (and then low level healed) away from company when he talks. “Aye, yer frenz cn sta awa, too. Nabut fer drink an mebbe summin ter et an a bet. Na trainnin nor healin nor research eh?” His speech is severely slurred, but he is hale enough for the job! (Linguistics DC 10 or Sense Motive DC 20 for: Highlight to display spoiler: { Non-WLA members with WLA members can have a meal and bed. They can’t have training or healing or do research.} )
…..

The evening is to the heroes for whatever they wish:
- Providing details of the current quest or current situation in Dirt City to Sarge and Dez?
- Talking to Old Luther or the half dozen visiting adventurers in the Common Room of the WLA? (Toston and Hmerrin can attempt any Know check with DC10 even if untrained)
- Asking around the Green Dragon for…‘whatever the heroes’ next step (need Know Local skill check)
- Asking around Temples or Groves for…‘whatever the heroes’ next step (need Know Religion or Nature skill check)
- Going and doing something else ( the city is your oyster!)

"Thanks, Luther," Desdichado says,"a meal and a bed sound great. Not sure we'd have time for anything else, anyway."

Once settled into where they'll be staying, Dez says, "I'm going to walk around for a bit, and check in at the temple of Domi to see if there's any news. I don't plan on being gone too long - I definitely want to hear more about your plans." He takes his time walking over to the temple, taking in the sites of the city. Always one to look out to help someone in trouble, especially if there are children who have been separated from their parents, he keeps his eyes and wits about him.

Once at the temple, Dez talks to the priests and gives them a brief update on why he's there (having been sent by the high priest) and to hear if there have been any updates in the meantime.

Afterwards, he makes his way beck to the Chapterhouse.

"The poor Grubbers," he mumbles as memories of living on the streets distract him.

Toston says to Luther, "Thank you my good man for your hospitality."

He then obliges Hmerrin and pulls out the unicorn map spreading it out on the nearest table. He harkens Sarge and Dez and shows them the map.

He says to his new friends, "We were gifted with this strange document from a group of Orcs whilst returning from apprehending some renegades who had stolen property belonging to some of the Houses in Dirt City. Our own research from the local Dirt City WLA and some other sources in the city helped us to figure out where specifically the map was referring to. "Hold up, Dez," she says, when the paladin heads for the temple. "I'll come with you."

Sarge asks, in a general way, about legends of treasure in the area, and what kinds of creatures or devices might be guarding such treasure. [Religion 13]

WLA Chapterhouse (DM SteveK)
Thursday April 11th, 2019 8:32:06 AM

The group gets a room and reveals the map. A basic treasure hunt? Sarge was expecting something more, but her wisdom suggests maybe that’s still to come?

Dez and Sarge go to the Domi temple and have a good evening speaking with the priests and acolytes. Even the high priest of this temple has a few minutes with the adventurers. What they don’t have is any more information about the prophesy, Tide, or Unicorn Tribe.

Gaffer has a great time; in one of the groves there is a party; wine and half-clothes people are partying hard with a satyr that Gaffer recognizes immediately as Thalpius, one of the two helpers of the Greenmage of Culverwood, Grynntymm Deeproot! If there is anyone who would know about the Unicorn Tribe, it would be Thalpius!

The satyr seems intrigued with Gaffer, and goes back with him to the WLA. Soon he is lounging in the Tide’s room. “So, I’m pretty bored partying every night and sleeping all day while waiting for the Old Grouch’s call. What do ya got for me for excitement?”

After seeing that the party doesn't seem to mind, Gaffer unfolds the map for the Satyr as Sarge asks her question.

He adds, "And about this area?"

Thalpius. (DM SteveK)
Friday April 12th, 2019 7:45:13 AM

Wilford decides to find a temple to Alemi. He is able to find one, and it is unlike both Sarge and Dez’ description of the temples to Domi or Wilford’s experience with Gargul. For the Gray Lord, Wilford remembers a place of shadows, many paths, and quiet. From Sarge and Dez’ stories, temples to Domi have a large open area good for wrestling or other contests (there are always games of skill and competition happening). Here in a temple to Alemi… it has an open central area like Domi’s, and it is quiet like Gargul’s, but… There is an air of peace and healing here: many alcoves where clerics can privately tend to people’s hurts of body, mind, and spirit. There is a feeling of vitality here: areas for good nutrition, good health, good rest, and good works. Not a passive defense, but a sense of gentle but indomitable purpose.
Speaking with several acolytes, they all suggest that for adventuring clerics, protective spells, healing spells, and cure spells would all be worth studying.

Desdichado watches the satyr politely, but with suspicion, and listens before committing to any action.

Hmerrin gives the satyr some wine, and then has some himself. The young lad looks over at Toston and Gaffer, to see what they tell the Satyr. "Me, I say open it up for him too," he tells them.

Sarge responds to Thalpius’ statement. "What do you know about a tribe of orcs called the Unicorns?"

Toston observes he has never hung out with a Satyr before, and will be OK if everyone else is OK.

Gaffer unfolds the map and shows it to Thalpius, especially pointing out the area of Izen in a dent of the forest marked by a unicorn.

……..
Thalpius seems in no way put off by the luke-warm reception. He gladly takes the offered wine and plops down on the same chair as Hmerrin. “A noble offer! But I think some of your friends need to remove a stick or two…” The Satyr winks and grins. Despite swinging the wine-filled goblet like a pointer for emphasis, Thalpius doesn’t spill a drop. “Chief Giddeeyon, yah terrible name for an Orc, is the leader of Unicorn Tribe, at least he was two months ago when His Greenmageness had me deliver a message. Good group for Orcs. The unicorns sure think so. Nearly every Orc in the tribe has a unicorn companion! Darn hard to find, though. Never find them in Culverwood, you see, the Forest helps keep them hidden, but if you can bribe them into the Bight, well, then you can talk. Once they trust you, it is a niiiice par-tay!”

At the opening of the map, the Satyr instantly becomes business-like. From somewhere in his goat-leg fur (Perception DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { Thalpius has an extra-dimensional space in his fur for a pocket!}), Thalpius pulls a pair of spectacles and a clear stone. He invokes the stone (Spellcraft DC 11 Highlight to display spoiler: { Detect Evil }) and looks at the map and then the heroes with it, before putting it and the spectacles back and pointing to the area Gaffer highlighted. “Yep, that is the Unicorn Bight, a section of Izen that Culverwood grows around. And the only place you can attract and speak with the Unicorn Tribe. And I think your map has hidden magical messages still undiscovered. Chief Giddeeyon may be able to help there, as long as you have his trust.”

Thalpius drains the wine and is suddenly in party-mode again. “So, no excitement, then? We got wine, we got a big room, we got,” he pauses and counts noses, “eh, a little small, but enough for some really fun games!” He wiggles his eyebrows suggestively then laughs in good humor. (Sense Motive DC20 Highlight to display spoiler: { Hunch: Thalpius isn’t in earnest, just seeing how far he can go before the heroes are too embarrassed.})

Monday April 15th, 2019 6:56:38 AM

Wilford is able to relax in Alemi’s temple, but is unable to get anymore information other than rumors of a Tribe of Good Orcs called the Unicorn Tribe somewhere in Izen.

Hmerrin realizes this particular Satyr is not typical of the breed and asks how to attract the Unicorn Tribe.

Desdichado realizes this Satyr is typical of the breed in at least one particular and suggests a message?

Sarge reminds the others that Garrl suggested to be merchants, then turns down Thalpius in matronly fashion.

Toston has a different line of questions. Is Thalpius Good? How much was the inter dimensional ‘pocket’? Was Chief Giddeeyon a Greenmage?
.....

While the Satyr doesn’t seem to be embarrassed about ... well ... anything, it seems giving away information for free is something else. “You need a Guide. I can do that for the right price.” He waves his hand about dismissively, “not money, what do I need money for? Wine, Sex, or Song; that’s the only thing I need and what his Green Grouchness won’t give me. You give me enough of any, or all!” ( and he wiggles his eyebrows again with a wink) “of those, and I’ll help you attract the Unicorn Tribe. “

To Toston’s first question, Thalpius grins. “Why don’t you check? I think it’s a ‘Touch’ Spell?”, he says suggestively. To the second “That would be telling”, and to the third, he falls off Hmerrin’s lap and rolls on the floor laughing. Between gasps and renewed guffaws, the Tide learns that Chief Giddeeyon isn’t a Greenmage. The person Thalpius serves is the Greenmage of Culverwood, Grynntymm Deeproot!

Thalpius and a Plan (DM SteveK)
Tuesday April 16th, 2019 6:42:49 AM

Gaffer and Hmerrin are not interested in the over-the-top Thalpius, certainly not in fulfilling all three of his requests! But Hmerrin refills the Satyr’s cup and Thalpius seems happy enough with just the wine.

Desdichado puts forth an idea, wine merchants, and that the paladin has a history of at least watching a real merchant all his life. Hidden depths!

Sarge and Toston key in that Thalpius said “or”, a very important article, and focuses on the ‘wine’ word.

Wilford agreed to the plan, but the hero isn’t sure if the end of his sentence was a period or question mark. ?
....

Thalpius nods downing another goblet of wine. The satyr’s speech is becoming blurry but he gamely goes on. , “A gift of wine and maybe wind chimes or bridle bells is a good start to attract the Unicorn Tribe. Bring that to the Bight and ,...”. He wiggles the empty cup meaningfully. Once filled (and drained again), Thalpius curls up on a chair. Fumbling with words, he continues “then build a bonfire and wait. They will come”. One more goblet of wine and he exclaims “you guys are all right!” And promptly falls asleep.

The next day, a happy Thalpius goes on his way back to the groves. Between Toston and Desdichado are easily able to collect whatever they want to produce their wine merchant personna: a wagon, two horses, and six barrels of wine cost 100gp. If the heroes want a variety of chimes, bells, and finger cymbals: that is another 50gp.

The heroes have the map and the directions to attract the Unicorn Tribe. Let’s go get that treasure!

"Not sure if it fits out outfit but I think I should be in the air. We might draw a little to much attention traveling as merchants."

Assuming no objections, Gafferhawk takes to the sky, routinely circling the group and looking for any unexpected travellers.

Near the Bight (DM SteveK)
Wednesday April 17th, 2019 6:39:25 AM

There is some talk of how to pay for the merchandise, and Sarge generously fronts the 150gp for all the bells and wine. Surely, when they get to the end of this treasure map, there will be enough compensation!

There is some talk of disguises for everyone. Hmerrin and Toston are definitely guards and Dez is the snooty rich merchant. Gaffer is the pet hawk. Sarge states she could be one of several people and Wilford is nursing a hungover head.

The heroes previously had decided to travel by flatboat from Dirt City north to Karri, the Emerald City, then walk a day south on the main road until they got to the Great Trade Road. From there, they planned to turn west and travel the GTR past Fort Silence until seeing signs of the Bight.

So, that’s what they do.

It is an uneventful two days of travel, keeping with the pace of the wagon. A day south to the GTR, and a day west, passing Fort Silence before noon. At the evening of the second day, Gafferhawk, flying far above the little wagon, can see the Unicorn Bight, and can see the border of Culverwood and Izen in this area could look like an outline of a Unicorn’s head.

The heroes have about an hour of daylight left, and can see Thermos the sun near the western horizon, bright Wardd high above, and the blank spot of Kerracles on the eastern horizon. They have the map (below) including the decoded strange writing that says :

VIEWED IN GENERALITY
A DROP OF BLOOD FREELY

WILL INK THE RIDDLE

The Tide also has the directions from Thalpius on how to attract the Orc Unicorn Tribe.

“bring a gift of wine, chimes, and bells to the Bight
and build a bonfire and wait.
They will come”

Visitors in the Bight (DM SteveK)
Thursday April 18th, 2019 7:15:27 AM

Hmerrin recalls one of his father's sayings. "When all else fails, follow the instructions." The heroes, wagon, and goods are still on the Trade Road, so the Tide nudges the horses off the road and heads north towards the Bight. A half hour of off-roading gets them far enough north to not be able to see the road, the grasses have the occasional tree, and the sharp-eyed Hmerrin spots an old fire pit. Perfect! The young fighter gathers firewood, although he'll avoid the Culverwood, because, well, seriously spooky!

Desdichado pulls a wine barrel and some bells out of the wagon and arranges them as he remembers his father doing; tapping the barrel for the aroma, hanging bells in trees so they chime with the wind, etc. He helps to build the bonfire, and waits.

Toston suggests for him to use his fiery breath to light a draconic bonfire: it would be good for stories!

Sarge, also collecting wood, is surprised at Toston’s ability, and agrees a dragon fire sounds great. While watching the fire, she holds a set of chimes, tinkling them absently.

Gaffer morphs back into Gaffer, it had taken him two uses of his Wildshape ability to maintain the Hawk shape throughout the long day’s travel. He looks about the area of the old fire pit and notes the gentle rolling hills block view of the Trade Road, there are enough trees that are NOT Culverwood to gather sticks for a fire, and a small hidden spring with fresh water. Yep, looks like a good campsite!

Wilford makes sure the wine is worthy as a gift; hair of the dog, you know.
…….

With the last light of Thermos falling westward, and the indigo cloak of night spreading across the sky, Toston takes a breath and *foosh!*, the dry bonfire is ablaze!

Waiting is hard. Minutes drag. Dinner is eaten and utensils washed. Maybe a song, maybe a story. Ugh; has it only been an hour? Then Hmerrin spots them, the youngster’s eyes catching the shadowy figures of a couple dozen mounted riders 120’ away at the edge of the bonfire’s light! (ooc: treating bonfire like Daylight spell).

Wilford tells the Tide he’s gonna take up a scouting position in the trees, and tries to scoot up a Large sized tree, but can’t get a purchase on the first branches (DM rolled Climb 9). Not being able to get up the tree, Wilford can perceive his movement from the bright fire to the tree was noted by several of the riders (and he knows if he is under observation, he can’t use Stealth to become hidden.)

Hmerrin takes a few steps forward, to get into a lead position. Holding out empty hands, he calls out: "Hail! Welcome to camp of Desdichado the Wondrous!"

Toston gets some of bells, chimes and cymbals together, and thinks ‘what the heck’, and jingles them in a merry tune.

Sarge stands and moves up beside Hmerrin. She doesn't say anything, but jingles her bells softly.

Desdichado positions himself at the front of the group, deliberately outlining himself with the bonfire at his back. With a big smile he begins. "Welcome, friends! We have brought you mighty fine wines. Come and see! Do you hear the chimes in the trees, bidding you to come and see what we offer? And we have with us our chimes to play you a merry greeting!"
………

The group of riders come forward slowly, at a walk. When they get into range of the bonfire (ooc: 60’ feet away), the Tide can see they have been found by who they wanted: the Unicorn Tribe! Twenty five are in the group, Orcs in mottled green-dyed armor that would make great camouflage in the woods and meadows of their territory. And every one of them are riding a Unicorn! (Perception DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: { 7 have warhammers in hand, 6 loaded crossbows, and 12 with shortspears.})

One rides a little ahead of the others, armed with a warhammer and shield (and a crossbow across his broad back. “Hail the camp of Desdichado the Wonderous”, he says in a good and deep voice. “I am Giddeeyon, Chief of Unicorn Tribe. You are in our territory and are under our customs. Though we do not know your name, you bring wine and music and welcomes, so you must have met with someone who has been here before. But we do not know you.”

Giddeeyon pauses, then continues. “Before we accept gifts, we must know your names and purpose to seek out Unicorn Tribe. I am Giddeeyon and I have spoken.”

The night is again quiet but for the crackling and snap of the bonfire. Desdichado knows that it takes some time of speaking (ooc: 1 minute) before his persuasive Diplomacy will have a chance to work on the Orc Chieftain. The Unicorn Tribe waits on the response from the heroes in the camp.

Wilford approaches the riders, speaking eloquently. The listening Orcs seem well inclined to listen, and though they look at each other in question when Wilford speaks of a tower, the automatic craving of pardon makes them smile and nod.

Desdichado speaks openly about what he knows: his name and profession, a nearby treasure, and inserts the name of ‘the satyr Thalpius’, which brings both eye rolls and grins.

Gaffer gives his name, and, hesitantly, mentions he once lived in Culverwood. He is also prepared to show the map.

Sarge gives formal greeting, and (Sense Motive DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: { hunch: the Orcs are more impressed with long titles }) announces their peaceful intentions and wish for speech.

Hmerrin decides just to keep it simple. "Well met, Giddeeyon. I am Hmerrin."

Toston also says his name and professional connections, reiterating what others have said on peace, Thalpius, and following a map. The new information brings new nods; ‘bequeathed to us from another tribe of Orcs.’
….

The Orc Chieftain grins. “Giddeeyon, the Chief of Unicorn Tribe, says we see gifts, we know Thalpius, and we welcome you to trade with Unicorn Tribe. But!” Most of the other orcs were getting ready to dismount as if they thought it was the end of a routine, yet they stop and stay mounted, wondering aloud at what Giddeeyon is going to say.

”You say you not come to just trade. You want treasure, are searching with a map, and want to know what Unicorn Tribe knows about the map and the treasure. For that, you must first be Friends of Unicorn Tribe.” The other orcs look at the Tide in new speculation and anticipation. Giddeeyon is quick to explain. ”Ritual combat. Each of you; Wilford, Desdichado, Gaffer, Fyrda, Hmerrin, and Toston; must fight one-on-one with one of Unicorn Tribe. As Chief, I have special blessing amulet that lets no hurt or death happen in Ritual. You fight one-on-one in Ritual box, and you become Friends of Unicorn Tribe. And we help you with map.”

Desdichado, Hmerrin, and Sarge are eager to have this little tete-a-tete with the orcs!

Gaffer is more hesitant, but he's willing to do his best.

Wilford is more 'no way', and 'how is this going to go and who am I fighting?'

Toston, as usual with his inquisitive mind, has a whole slew of questions eager for answers!

.......
Chief Giddeeyon grins at the questions. "All good questions for new friends and maybe new Friends."

"Friends should be able to protect Friends, so you should win some or at least be close!"

"Friends know they can fight for fun and then drink and eat and laugh. Hands, weapons, spells, companions: all are permitted in Ritual. Amulet makes sure all hurts are non-lethal."

"Preperation magic also permitted before you step in the box. Two ways you can win: knock opponents out of box borders, or just knock unconscious."

After the Chief explains the rules, he makes a motion and six Orcs with their unicorns ride up to pair off against the Tide.

Desdichado meets Arkan and Nheimor, a Ranger and his Unicorn Companion.

Hmerrin meets Bozak and Winni, a Ranger and his Unicorn Companion.

Sarge meets Candor and Hoofstrong, a Druid and his Unicorn Companion.

Gaffer meets Durbin and Einhorn, a Druid and her Unicorn Companion.

Wilford meets Eesk and Snowmane, a Druid and his Unicorn Companion.

Toston meets Fister and Fooster, a Ranger and his Unicorn Companion.

Then Giddeeyon holds aloft his Amulet and the air shimmers. Before each team of opponents, six transparent boxes appear, a 50 foot square with two openings on opposite sides. The Orcs and their Unicorns all go to one side of their respective square, and wait for the heroes to go to the other. Chief Giddeeyon calls out, " Won't make friends fight if they don't want. You can choose not to step in square, but then you automatically lose that Ritual."

"Hi there, let's umm, have fun then." Gaffer waves to Durbin and Einhorn. "Maybe we can talk after, Einhorn, you are truly beautiful"

He pauses to cast Barkskin on himself, followed by Air Walk, as some basic preperation, stepping into the square already raised up off the ground if possible.

If the opposing druid also casts spells in preparation, he will also sacrifice a spell slot to summon a medium air elemental for the fight.

Taking a deep breath, he steps into the square, feeling more tense now than in some of their real fights.

Toston Lotor(Hugh Crosmun) [HP: 67/67; AC:33/22/29 - CMD 28
Tuesday April 23rd, 2019 8:30:32 PM

Toston hearing that pre-battle spells were allowed prepares to cast mage armor and shield as soon as possible to the starting of his bout with Fister and Fooster but before he steps into the ring. He also does the same with one of his scrolls of cat's grace but after the mage armor and shield spells. He is a little dismayed that he used his single use of the breathe weapon on the bonfire as a 30 foot cone of flame could prove useful when dealing with an orc and their unicorn mount especially since ring outs were possible but then Toston remembers the spell he learned recently grease, he could wait until the orc mounted on the unicorn tries to overrun him and prior to the unicorn mounted orc reaching him he would cast grease in their path. With any luck the unicorn would lose its footing and trip and he would then be free to counter attack the unicorn from range using magic missile or scorching ray. Toston says to Fister and Fooster, "Everything I'm about to do is because I respect the formidable pairing you two make. I hope there is no hard feelings after this match."

"Candor and Hoofstrong. Good to meet you," Sarge says. She eyes the unicorn warily. She'd never cared much for horses, and as far as she can tall, unicorns were just horses with attitude.

"Just a sec," she adds. She casts Bless, sharing it with as many of her companions as is practical. She casts Divine Favor. There are other pre-battle spells she could cast, but she doesn't want to be rude.

"Let's go!" she says, and steps into her box.

Ooc: apologies to everyone. I tried to set up battle maps and my work computer is so slow in google docs that I can’t update any of the battle maps! We are going to have to go maples :-(

Wilford greets the Orc Druid warmly, and admires Eesk’s mount. Snowmane snorts and responds, “I agree, human, that my Eesk is amazing. Yes, I will be taking him into the fight, too”. Wilford prepares, noting that Eesk holds a shortspear and has a club. The cleric of Alemi casts Sanctuary, then summons a Giant Wasp before stepping in the Square.

Desdichado pulls out his greataxe from behind his back, says a short prayer over it, and meets his opponents. Arkan and Nheimor are both please Dez addresses them both directly, Nheimor commenting that ”this one is going to be a Good Friend of the tribe, Arkan” to which the Orc can only agree. At the signal, Dez is ready! He charges toward the orc with a strong blow! 28 vs AC; 22 non-lethal damage

Hmerrin assesses the tactical situation and realizes the Unicorn Tribe has a serious advantage! The young fighter gives his opponent a salute, and steps into the square. Bozak and Winni return a wave/salute and follow.

Gaffer waves to Durbin and Einhorn, praising the Unicorn who strikes a pose in response. Gaffer casts
Barkskin, Air Walk, and, watching Durbin, also summons a medium air elemental for the fight before stepping into the box from 30 feet in the air!

Toston casts mage armor, shield and cat's grace (from a scroll) and Readies a surprise. He acknowledges the formidable pairing of Fister and Fooster and hopes for no hard feelings after the match.

Sarge says it’s good to meet Candor and Hoofstrong, but is wary of the unicorn. Hoofstrong snorts in a good imitation of a laugh and responds. “It had to be a dwarf, Candor. No knocking her out of the ring!” Sarge casts Bless, sharing it all the Tide, then casts Divine Favor.
………..

Arkan casts longstrider and resist energy (fire), then drinks his potion of bull's strength. When he gets into the box, Desdichado is ready for him: charge! And lays a strong blow against Arkan! Reeling, Arkan retaliates with two strong hammer blows, but Nheimor is unable to effectively strike the Paladin! [Dez takes 20 non-lethal damage]

Bozak casts longstrider and resist energy (fire), then drinks his potion of bull's strength. As expected, as soon as Hmerrin steps into the box, Winni charges with Bozak leaning in with a strong shield bash! Fortunately for the young fighter, Bozak is not very accurate and misses twice!

Candor drinks his potion of shield of faith. Upon stepping into the box, he casts Sleet Storm. Sarge finds herself in a driving sleet, blocking all sight including darkvision, and things are getting icy! (Acrobatics DC 10 to move half speed; fail by 5 and fall prone. No check if standing still.)

Durbin drinks her potion of shield of faith. She and Einhorn whisper to each other at seeing Gaffer too high for them to reach, then steps into the box, and casts Ice Storm, pummeling Gaffer and the Elemental with cold and hail! [Gaffer and elemental take 17 non-lethal damage and -4 Perception checks]

Eesk drinks his potion of shield of faith. As soon as they are in the box, Snowmane gallops up and gores the Wasp [Wasp takes 26 non-lethal damage] As Snowmane got near, Eesk tries to quickly dismount but fails and only manages to be toe to toe with Wilford!

Fister casts longstrider and resist energy (fire), then drinks his potion of bull's strength. As expected, as soon as Toston enters the box, they charge, but the wiley Toston has a surprise ready. He casts Grease as soon as the unicorn and orc are close enough to touch and … Fooster sits down on his haunches and slides out of the box! Fister attempts a quick dismount, fails, and also slides out. Toston wins!

Toston’s box disappears and Toston, Fister, and Fooster can join the rest of Unicorn Tribe while watching the other fights. (ooc: Very clever in tactics (readied action) and execution (Grease). Toston gets a Hero Point!)

Wednesday April 24th, 2019 10:26:35 PM

Dwarves are not known for their acrobatic abilities. Neither are clerics. Sarge stays where she is, and doesn't attempt to move.

She draws her warhammer and squints through the driving sleet. "Ah! A balmy spring day in the Scab," she says. "But watch out for that thunder!"

She casts defensively, because for all she knows Candor or that stupid sparkle horse is standing right next to her. The sleet distracts her, however; she does not concentrate and loses her spell.

Gaffer yelps as the hail crashes into him, quickly hurrying forward to clear himself of the spell and put some distance between himself and the edge of the ring.

He urges his elemental to do the same. Before telling to it take it's whirlwind form and fly into the Druid-Unicorn pair. He is unsure if it can lift them up but if so, he aims to have it carry at least one of them out of the square.

From above he quickly calls upon his Lightning Lord skill to send two bolts of lightning down, crashing into both.

Hmerrin ducks under the attempted shield bash, giving jovial combat banter. He unleashes a series of heavy blows at the unicorn, striking only once. Bozak dismounts and he and Winni strike many times, but can't get through the fighter's defense!

Desdichado goes for a big attack against Arkan, and succeeds in knocking the Orc Ranger out! Nheimor fights back against Desdichado, but fails to hurt the noble Paladin.

Toston pleased that his tactic worked better than he thought! He offers his hand to Fister and Fooster, making comment on the quick combat. Fister seems mad, but Fooster gives a horsey laugh. "It was a right mess-up, wot? Don't think it would work twice that way, but it certainly was showy!"

Wilford sees no opportunity to attack Eesk or Snowmane during their charge, and takes a five foot step, which is not quite enough to flank Eesk, and misses with his weapon. The Wasp attacks the opponent hurting itself, the unicorn Snowmane, striking hard! Snowmane returns the favor, wounding the Wasp again. Eesk backs up and tries to fend off WIlford with his spear.

Sarge stays where she is, and doesn't attempt to move. She draws her warhammer and squints through the driving sleet, trying and losing a spell. What Candor or Hoofstrong is doing is a mystery.

Gaffer hurries forward to clear himself of the ice storm, and calls lightning to strike Durbin and Einhorn! Gaffer calls to the air elemental, but can't speak Auran, the language of the air elementals. WIthout direction, the elemental leaves the area of the Ice Storm, and speeds to attack Durbin, but misses a slam. (Know Planes DC 14 Highlight to display spoiler: { Air elementals whirlwind attack can only damage and pick up a creature one size smaller than the elemental. }. Wilford continues his flanking maneuver, his light armor enabling him to perform a deft sway-and-step to get around Eesk, but still doesn't flank the Orc (Eesk made his own 6 foot step before, and the Wasp is no longer flanking the Orc). Dez tries to get a sense of whether Arkan and Nhiemor would be offended if he used Lay on Hands on them and helped Arkan to get up. If not, he does so. Otherwise, he simply says "That was a good fight" to Arkan and Nhiemor.

"ok... ok," Wil mumbles as the Wasp disappears.
Wil retreats backward away from both enemy, attempting to make room to cast. (Mobility feat +4 dodge bonus) He also attempts to maneuver, keeping the unicorn behind the orc, if he can.
(OOC: I'm still unsure about which box I'm in)
He casts spiritual weapon, a copy of his staff appears. Wil directs the staff to strike at the head of the orc, attempting to cause the most pain and possibly causing it to retreat backward. (Attack: 5) (OOC: Would this staff be a double strike weapon since it has two ends?)
Wil continues his Acrobatics, if needed (Acrobatic: 18) - as long as his avoids stepping from the square.

(OOC: Battlemaps. Added names to the bottom of each Ritual Box.)

Sarge calls incredulously to Candor, "What, two against one wasn't lopsided enough for you?", and casts Protection from Evil, just in case. The Sleet, silent and obscuring, doesn’t obscure a horsey laugh from Hoofstrong. “Let’s instead say we have a very healthy respect for the abilities of Adventurers!” (DM: moving time forward) The battle is indecisive for nearly another minute (Sleet lasts 8 rounds total), Sarge unwilling to move and Candor and Hoofstrong unwilling to get within hammer range of the cleric. But then the Sleet Storm ends, and Sarge sees what Candor has been preparing. Four Aurochs; large, horned black bulls; see the dwarf and (Candor fails to direct three) charge upon her, one after another, trampling with big, hard hooves! (4 rolls at Reflex DC 17 for half; Non-Lethal Dam 20 + 17 + 16 + 12). Three of them then dissipate as they leave the Ritual Box, but one circles around... Only then does Hoofstrong move, charging in on Sarge, missing with her horn!

Hmerrin shifts to attack the orc, but frankly, it just doesn’t seem to have the heart for this one. Bozak tries again to force Hmerrin out of the ring with shield strikes, but can’t get a bead on the fighter.

Dez sees that Nhiemor is pleased with the Paladin using a Lay on Hands on Arkan. The Unicorn touches Dez with his own healing horn while Dez helps Arkan to his feet. “You were prepared and fought well. I never had a chance in a toe-to-toe fight with you, Friend”, says the Orc.

Wilford is having trouble, and he retreats backward away from both enemy, keeping the unicorn behind the orc. He casts spiritual weapon and attacks (sorry, per spell, only one attack per round) and misses. Snowmane suffers more from the Giant Wasp sting, but then is able to overcome the poison. The Unicorn trots to Wilford and skewers him with the horn! (Wilford takes 10 non-lethal damage). Eesk calls out, “whenever you want, you can walk out of the Ring, Mister Adventurer. You really are out-matched!” The Orc himself takes a step back and begins casting a complicated spell! (Spellcraft DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { Summon Nature IV})

Toston wanders over to Dez, making combat comments. Arkan, Fister, Nheimor, and Fooster also keep in the clump. “Should’ve been dismounted before entering, which would have given an advantage of flanking on the heavy armored adventurer”, Fister comments while watching Hmerrin’s battle.

Gaffer’s Ritual sparks and ripples, freezing Gaffer, Durbin, and Einhorn in place. Chief Giddeeyon mumbles in annoyance and shakes his amulet, returning the combat to normal speed. (ooc: DM did this to not miss Gaffer’s turn which may have been missed because the DM was very inconsistent in time of posting last week.)

Hmerrin again bats aside the shield attack, and continues his slow slog of getting this fight over with. Bozak tries one more shield bash that would have tagged nearly anyone… but not Hmerrin! “For the love of Culverwood!”, Bozak cries, and then throws his shield down in disgust. “Fine! You win, but only because I couldn’t ride circles around you with Winni and pepper you with arrows!” Bozak walks out of the Ritual and makes a beeline for the wine cask, then looks over his shoulder. “Coming, Friend?” Hmerrin wins!

Wilford keeps moving, swearing after the Unicorn gored him. He tries to strike the Unicorn, first with his own weapon, missing, and then with the Spiritual, which hits. (OOC: Spiritual weapon is a spell that requires an attack roll, it doesn’t hit every time. Attack is Base+Wis mod. DM rolled this round, AC 21, hits) Snowmane keeps on his attack, missing with horn and both hooves. Eesk completes his spell and a Medium sized Python appears and attacks, also missing. Eesk grumbles something, and casts another spell. For an instant, Wilford is surrounded by a mass of little hornets that sting like the bejeezus, and then are gone! (Wilford takes 10 damage)

Dez leans over to Toston. "These are pretty exciting, huh? I had no idea how it was going with the rest of you. If we have more fights like this in store, I'm going to lile being a friend of the Unicorn Tribe!"

Toston says to Des, "I was a victim of my own success. I was looking forward to single combat since it happens so rarely but my well time grease slick was enough to score me an early ring out so I've pretty much just been watching the rest of you."

Sarge casts a spontaneous Cure Critical Wounds to recover from some of the trampling, and, with a tremendous effort, casts a Spiritual Weapon. A ghostly hammer appears next to Candor and begins whacking him. Candor again successfully pushes the Aurochs into a Trample and Return (Sarge takes 18 damage; Reflex DC 17 for half). Hoofstrong misses all attacks and snorts in frustration to not be able to strike the dwarf. Candor winces and calls out, “so no more summonings? As you wish, mighty lady!” He casts a Hornet’s Nest spell, and for an instant, Sarge is surrounded by a mass of hornets! (Sarge takes 9 damage)

Gaffer moves himself higher into the air, forty feet up, and summons his own Ice Storm to disrupt Durbin’s spell! Durbin dodges, but the spell does its immediate work and the Orc’s efforts fizzle! Durbin looks disgustingly up at Gaffer and then over to Einhorn. “This is only going to go one way”, the Unicorn replies to the look. Durbin shrugs, “then we must yield the field”, is the reply. And Durbin and Einhorn exit the Ritual. Gaffer wins!

(OOC: all damage in the Rituals is non-lethal)

Wilford defensively casts Shield of Faith, has his Spirit Weapon attack Snowmane, and moves back ten feet towards the edge of the box to take on a defensive position. Moving more than a single step (5 feet) opens Wilford up to attacks of opportunity from both Snowmane and the Python, both missing. They both advance and attack again. Horn! Hoof! Hoof! Bite! And thanks to the Shield of Faith, they all miss too! Eesk moves up and casts a spell on Snowmane, healing some damage.

Hmerrin throws back his helm, rolling his eyes at Bozak’s combat statements. Then he gets asked to drink and the lad perks right up. "Oh, Right! Yes. Absolutely. Right behind you."

Desdichado is naturally quiet, so watches Sarge and Wilford’s matches without saying much. He does talk with Nhiemor and Arkan a bit more. Arkan answers “Our shaman can name hands and hands of Chiefs, and all have been Unicorn Tribe, all had Ritual Amulet, and all have been here in the Bight and Culverwood.” Nheimor adds a bit more, “our Orc companions are short-lived and, like the Unicorn, only remember through stories and not the writing of which the Noble Races are so fond. The Unicorn Elders stay in Retirement Field, and can remember many lifetimes of our Companions.”

Toston wanders to the drinks with Hmerrin. "About time you got here. (ooc: though it has been only 30 seconds since the start of the Ritual) I won early because of a grease spell leading to a ring out and Dez just won shortly before you did."

Sarge’s Spiritual Weapon continues to thwack Candor. (ooc: damage only disrupts casting if it occurs during the casting. E.g. spell takes a full round to cast [summons], spellcaster is in a continuous damage area [lava], or a Readied attack that strikes if the target begins a spell) Sarge herself shifts position slightly and thwacks Hoofstrong with her very not-spiritual weapon! Hoofstrong backs up a step, and Candor tries to send in the Aurochs for another trample, but can’t control the beast, so it just comes in to gore Sarge, striking with a horn! (14 damage). Keeping at arms distance for Sarge is not arms distance for Hoofstrong, and the Unicorn attacks. Hoofstrong missed with both hooves, but the horn finds a weak spot and drives in for a critical attack! (Crit confirmed, 15 damage!). Candor casts Barkskin, giving him more protection against the Sprit Weapon.

Gaffer is able offers his hand and Friends to Durbin who takes it warmly. “No, good fight. Use what you have to make the fight the kind you can win. Makes me think I need to get a sling.”

Chief Giddeeyon wanders over to the wine casks and fills a leather skin before taking a satisfying swig. “Yah, fun fights, good fights. You easy take out some of best warriors of Unicorn Tribe, you will be good Friends. Last two fights last long time. We see if Unicorn Tribe can hold our head high with any victory! I will send for rest of tribe to feast and then we look at map. OK, Friends?”

Sarge takes 14 points of non-lethal damage and falls unconscious.

Since her non-lethal damage is equal to her max hit points, all subsequent damage is lethal damage.

Sage takes 15 points of lethal damage, which isn't going to help her headache. However, I don't think it kills her, even though it puts her at -26 hit points. At least, I hope it doesn't.

The Spiritual Weapon continues to thwack Candor. Its first strike misses; then it hits AC 30 for 10 damage.

If Candor wants it to stop, he needs to wake up Sarge. :)

The Ritual box disappears, and with it, the Spiritual Hammer and the Aurochs dissipate too. Sarge wakes up after Hoofstrong touches the dwarf with her horn, healing Sarge for 7 hit points. Candor offers a hand, and gestures with the other towards the fire, wine, and company.

Wilford tries to intimidate Snowmane into becoming angry, but he is more forceful than intended, and causes the unicorn to become shaken! The rougish cleric prepares to dodge any attack or charge. While the Snake attacks, missing, Eesk calls out to Wilford. “How about we call this a draw? You have been surprisingly hard to take out and I’ve run out of my best offensive spells. I think I can still beat you, but it’s going to take a very long time, and I want some wine before Bozak drinks it all. What say you?” Eesk readies to throw his shortspear, and Snowmane readies a renewal of hostilities pending Wilford’s answer…

(OOC: Intimidate can only change attitude [1 minute of conversation] or demoralize [standard action]. Demoralize DC is 10+opponent HD+opponent Wis Mod. Snowmane is Dc 17

Desdichado winces as he watches Sarge go down, and watches Wilford's fight with interest.

Hmerrin effects a dramatic pose for Toston. "I was trying to build the tension," he proclaims, then grins and grabs a drink. He winces at Sarge’s loss.

Toston goes over to Gaffer and emphasizes Durbin’s comments. Durbin frowns and looks pointedly at her bosom. “She”, she says, then grins; the night is too nice to ruin with hard feelings.

Gaffer admits Durbin and Toston have a point, compliments Toston on his clever win, and worries over the pain Sarge must be in.
…..

The rest of the Unicorn Tribe, orcs and unicorns, are around the fire: drinking, eating, and singing off-key. Some have spit meat on sticks and are roasting it over the fire, offering the delicacy to the Tide as new Friends of Unicorn Tribe!

Chief Giddeeyon takes another drink and sends for rest of tribe to come to the feast.

Wil raises his hands, palm forward.
"I meant no offense to your family," Wil says too Snowmane. "I was trying to provoke you to charge me so that I could dodge and send you out of the box. I did not mean to leave you shaken. I tell you what, seeing a shaken unicorn leaves a mark in the brain. It's just so beautiful."
"Hey!" Cicero says loudly within Wil's head. "Don't go soft! This could be bad... a trick.. a setup."
Wil ignores him, then casts Channel Positive Energy (12) to the unicorn in a show of good faith.
"I would love a drink," he says to Eesk. "I was very surprised this went as far, in my favor, as it did. We declare a draw then?"
Wil takes up a defensive position, just to be safe, and waits for the word that it is agreed to be a draw.

Toston says to Sarge, "I don't think a tie counts towards a sweep either. I guess we won 4, lost 1 and tied 1. Not a bad showing. To be fair you were stranded in that sleet storm while the ranger summoned a small army to fight you, I think that would have been a difficult match for any of us."

"We're a team anyway" Gaffer says bumping shoulders with Sarge, "I dare say you'll show us all what you can do next we have a proper fight."

Gaffer is joyed to join the Unicorn Tribe in eating and drinking. He asks if Chief Giddeeyon could share some tales of their tribe.

Wil and Eesk agree to a draw, and soon all Rituals are done! The Tide and Unicorn Tribe are able to celebrate new-found Friends, and soon the rest of the tribe arrives, with herds of little multi-colored unicorn bunnies hopping underfoot!

Dez uses a couple of Lay on Hands to get Sarge back on her feet and then walks over to the refreshments with her.

Sarge rolls to her feet. "Oof, I'm getting too old for this. Sorry, guys," she adds to her teammates. "I guess I cost us the sweep. Hey, did somebody say drinks?" There seems to be no snubbing or crowing over who won or lost. In fact… (Sense Motive DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: {The Unicorn Tribe seems relieved that they weren’t completely trounced. The hunch is they would have been worried about becoming servants or slaves of a group that could win every match.})

Toston apologizes to Durbin, who shrugs it off. “Did not think it was”, is the reply. Then Toston reassures Sarge, noting that it was Durbin’s tactics that would have been hard for any of the Tide. THIS comment makes Durbin the hero of the night for the rest of the Unicorn Tribe; her esteem has gone way up! Durbin laughs and corrects the Gnome again. “Not Ranger. Druid. Chief Giddeeyon sent Druids against your spellcasters and Rangers against your fighters.” The Chief chimes in. ” Yah, and I will remember the three easiest fights for the adventurers were Desdichado, Hmerrin, and Toston who all fought Rangers. Druid Durbin can teach something to the Tribe about best way to fight in future.” Yep. Waaaay up!

Gaffer supports Sarge and is happy to join the Unicorn Tribe in eating and drinking. He asks if Chief Giddeeyon could share some tales of their tribe. The Chief and others gladly share exploits of the Tribe, most stories dealing with one hero or another fight a giant, or manticore, or another orc tribe that ends in a glorious mutual kill.

Hmerrin and Bozak share drinks. The orc grins and downs his wine, refilling the glass, and matching Hmerrin drink for drink. He clearly wants to have a different sort of contest with the young lad! ( Fort DC 10+2 per drink.) Bozak is able to drink five before he starts weaving about.
……

Non-lethal damage doesn’t stay long on any of the contestants; Tide, Orc, or Unicorn. With a whole herd of Unicorns that can cast Cure Light Wounds at will, it is nearly no time at all that everyone is in top shape and ready to party!

For the feast, the Unicorn Tribe wears fancy plaid kilts, made from wool from their plaid sheep. (The flock is on the next hill over with a few herdsmen for the night). All about the unicorns and orcs hop little Almiraj, ”Unicorn Bunnies!”

For their part of the feast, the orcs serve fermented goats milk, “Pre-fermented and directly milked from our goat herd!” one Orc proudly proclaims. The taste is not sweet like wine, nor full and milky like expectations. Instead, it tastes earthier and puts a warm glow in the belly (ooc: like a Lagavulin Scotch without the kick). Various strange but delicious tubers, pods, and leaves mixed with Culverwood spices and oils make for exotic side dishes and salads. For meat, the orcs select bunnies that they mercifully slaughter and roast for the most delicate flavors.

The orcs are content to bask in the moment, and the unicorn are content to let the orcs bask. If any business is to get done, it is the Tide who will have to get the treasure hunt back on track…

Wil enjoys the moment and drinks heartily with his new friends. He is curious to know more about the unicorns. Details about their magic and why the orcs picked them to be partners.
"It seems a strange pairing," Wil comments. "Not sure why but it does. May be because I always assumed unicorn were independent-minded and would not consider a rider. This makes your pairing so much more interesting.... and unicorn bunnies.. you have unicorn bunnies!."
He is distracted for a moment or two then returns
"To add... this was quite a moment for me. I've got some good ideas on my new path I've been taking here lately. I think I may just include some more summons and stick with the protection. It seemed to serve me well. I don't have a lot of power in these hands but I can be a pain in the rear to the enemy."

(Sense Motive:20)

Toston apologizes to Durbin again, "I didn't realize you were a druid and not a ranger. I just saw a number of orcs and their unicorn companions bearing down on us and thought they were all martially inclined but caster versus caster and ranger versus martial class seemed like a fair way of serving up match-ups. To be fair though I'm kind of a cross of martial class and spell caster as my heritage gives me spell casting abilities and I was trained as a monk."

He picks up on the tribes discomfort and says to Durbin and the Chief, "We meant what we said regarding becoming friends. Even if we had won all our matches the Tide has no interest in enslaving people. We hail from Dirt City and we are trying to improve things in Dirt City. We were on our way back from a mission when we were gifted this map from another group of orcs. We spent some time researching and that was how we knew to come here. Our mutual Satyr friend told us what to do and the rest of course is history. We appreciate your food and drink and have participated in your ritual combats proving that we would make good friends for your tribe. In the interest of our newfound friendship we respectfully respect your aid in determining where to head next with respect to our map."

Sarge accepts another drink. "Yeah, that's the problem with druids," she says. "You're not just fighting the druid, you're fighting his whole menagerie." She eyes the unicorn bunnies with a puzzled expression. Things are weird on the surface.

Dez tries some of the food and drink, and watches Hmerrin and Bozak's drinking contest. After enjoying the entertainment for a while, and talking with the tribe (especially getting to know Arkan and Nheimor better) he listens to Toston as he talks with the Chief about the the map situation.

Hmerrin takes a drink, and Bozak takes a drink.
So, Hmerrin takes another drink.

This milk stuff is way different from what the lad is used to.
It goes down way too easy.

Hmerrin pretty much chugs two mugfuls, and promptly sits down, glassy eyed.

"'Dem are some cute bunny rabbits," he slurs.
