If the Herald can be repaired, then we should help Cecil to do so. She's a remarkable ship, Kiwina thinks.

"I agree that playing cards with Aaroth is playing to his strengths. While I am not sure that there is much skill in a single play of the cards, there has to be skill in putting several together and consistently winning. In fact. . . Cecil, have you seen him play many different kinds of games, or does he stick to just one thing?" If he wins at lots of things, it's more likely to be some sort of cheat than it is that he is skilled at all those things.

I agree with Rolth's logic and approach, so how do we send the message to Lord Marcus? I will go myself if there's no-one else we can trust. Falco, be careful what you wager. I suspect this demon is a skilled con at more than just cards.

Falco hopes that those in the room are watching closely how the 'demon' acts. Maybe they will learn something. He checks the target and moves to get as much distance as he can.

"Tell me about this 'pudding feast' game of yours while I shoot."

He pills back and lets a arrow fly at the paper. {Hit: 21 +1 if within 30ft}

"a nice shot Falco" Finnian comments about the shot. He waits patiently to see what the demon does. He would rather not have to play him at his own game but perhaps there is another way to win back the ship.

The Game is Afoot... Part V (DM Dan)
Monday April 8th, 2019 6:38:17 PM

Tsak Rezar ruminates on getting a message to Lord Marcus.
Finnian supports his friend in the competition.
Elyas says it should be left up to the party to decide, or just have an executive decision.
Rolth Niheow discusses the possibility of playing for time.
Kiwina queries Aaroth’s game of choice.
Falco Ambersier shoots the piece of paper almost straight in the middle, while talking to Aaroth.
Angus Macgrump tries to keep an eye out to see if Aaroth is cheating.

Aaroth seems to have had enough discussion for now, and stands up calling to all the Petals.

“You all seem to have a few brain cells between you to share, so let me ask you, would I be so brazen to use ALL of the Purple Duke’s gambling houses if I was afraid he would come after me for doing my business? Short answer, no. Long answer, no of course not. As such call them if you must, but they shan’t do anything.”

He shakes his head.

“Now, I tell you what, I can gather from your discussions that the Herald is not in the best condition, and you look like… semi competent adventurers. So I am willing to offer you a deal… you bet a task against the boat.”

He pauses.

“What I mean is you bet your services against Cecil’s dilapidated ship, if you win, you get the ship. If I win, you do a task for me. It won’t be anything against your sensibilities, I promise. Perhaps go and fetch some artifact for me, or something along those lines. But I will call upon it another time, it probably won’t be immediately.”

He looks at each member of the Petals.

“What say you?”

Angus doesn't feel that he should speak for anyone else. Even though he just met the Petals, he likes their style and would like to see more of what they will do next.

But this Aaroth makes him uneasy and Angus would just like to be elsewhere. Angus wonders if the Petals just should say "yes" and use it as an opportunity to leave town.

Angus says nothing but glances around the room, looking for every possible exit.

"You need to explain your terms more clearly. If you don't specify or at least put limits on the task, we cannot gage its value. In any case, there are several of us. Do you propose to contest us all, or as a group?"

"And if you're not going to take a shot at the target there, you should pay Falco."

he makes it sound too easy. this task could be anything, and he could come after us for it at any time. it leaves a lot up to interpretation. I still think we're better off letting him have the chunks of Herald

"I say you are a liar, a cheat, and a trickster. Did you think we wouldn't notice that you only bet the ship and not Cecil's freedom? Fie, you are dastardly! Let us discuss more proper terms. First, we must bet something of equal value, and you offer only a wrecked ship. I propose, if my fellow Petals will accept, the following. We wager a task, to be determined at a later date, that does not go against our morals, ethics, or sensibilities, as determined solely by the unanimous agreement of the Eight Petaled Rose. You wager the Herald, Cecil's freedom, and the return of all else that you have won from Cecil. In addition, you will surrender yourself to the Purple Duke to be tried on charges of cheating at the games, support for piracy, and slavery, in addition to any other charges that the Duke may decide to bring. So it it is the service of eight balanced by the cooperation of one. This seems fair to me. What say you, Petals and Aaroth?"

Tsak shakes his head to Rolth. He is definitely not in favor of doing a deal with the demon, even for Cecil's boat. Tsak thinks this interaction is heading back to fight territory.
This creature sent the undead pirates after us, several of our crew died. Surely that gives us the right to bring him to the Purple Duke for justice without the interference of the local guards. We can work out what to do about Cecil and the boat when he's in chains.
Tsak's hand moves back toward the hilt of his sword...

Disapponited that the Petals will not get to see if this Aaroth has any physical abilities Falco chose to remain silent though he does leave his arrow in the target. At the talk of piracy he dips his head and his eyes narrow slightly, the best he can do to show a frown with a beak.

Unless he admited to sending the pirates do we have proof? The goblin I guess, if he answers.

"Rolth's terms seem fair," Finnian adds. I wonder what his task would be. I'm sure it is nefarious if he wouldn't ask us to do it without loosing.

The Game is Afoot... Part VI (DM Dan)  d20=5 ;
Tuesday April 9th, 2019 5:14:15 PM

Tsak Rezar has thoughts about proof, how much do they actually have?
Finnian backs Rolth’s idea.
Elyas believes that leaving the Herald is the way to go.
Rolth Niheow starts making more of a concrete deal.
Kiwina tries to hammer out exactly what would be expected of them.
Falco Ambersier is a little upset he didn’t get to see Aaroth skills.
Angus Macgrump tries to look out in case a quick exit is needed.

Aaroth smiles at Kiwina.

“Good point, if I may?” He takes the bow and fires an arrow, which doesn’t even leave the bow, it simple falls out and onto the ground. He harrumps.

“Here is your coin.” And he hands Falco the agreed sum.

He smiles, a sparkle appearing in his eye when Kiwina and Rolth each speak.

“Very well. I have an object I want you to procure from a ruin. I am still investigating to find out exactly where it is. I would like you to go in and collect it for me once I have discovered it’s exact location. I intend to play against all of you, only those of you that lose to me are required to take up the task. Each of you here will join this game…”

He indicates the table with a few other gamblers.

“In turn, as players are knocked out, another one of you may take their place, until only one remains. If I am knocked out first, I will return to you ownership of the Herald. Which as he said…” he indicates Rolth. “Would include the freedom of Cecil, as he is only being held until he pays his debt. I do not wish to cheat you, or anyone else. Cecil bit off more than he could chew and is now paying the price, or more, trying to get you to pay the price. Since he seems to feel you owe him something.”

He shrugs.

“Alternatively you could leave and Cecil will remain here with me. So here it is a simply as I can put it for you.”

He takes a breath.

“We will play Taur Isle Pudding, with two of your players joining the game. Anytime a player is eliminated another one of those of you who are here will join the table, either in place of one of the other gamblers or in place of one of your compatriots. Any one of you adventurers who is knocked out is required to, once I find the location, search a ruin for an artifact I want recovered. If I am eliminated, I will return to you the Herald and free Cecil. All this nonsense about answering for breaking laws will be ignored, as simply put, I have broken no laws.”

He looks at each of you individually.

“What say you?”

"He seems to love the idea of the game so we only need play until one of us is eliminated. If we are going to play no need to give him the enjoyment of a long game. We stand together, if one is eliminated we are all going for this artifact anyway."

He pauses

"Unless there is some other incentive to extending the game."

Tsak Rezar agrees
Finnian also takes a shot at the paper, it hitting centre point again.
Elyas has his reservations but agrees.
Rolth Niheow agrees, as long as all of the Petals do.
Kiwina also agrees, assuming the rest of the Petals d.
Falco Ambersier attempts to just have one person play, and if lost they will all retrieve the artifact anyway.
Angus Macgrump offers to join and fill in a member of the party.

Aaroth smiles, and waves his hand at Finnian.

“I made no wager with you.”

He sits down at the table, and indicates the two seats.

“Two of you must begin with me.”

He looks at Falco. “ How about if just one of you beat me, then you will be free to go, how does that sound as an incentive to continue?”

He smiles predatorially.

“Now, the rules of the game are simple. There are 8 cards that can be dealt, 1, 2, 3, Jack, Queen, King, 7 and 8. We will have one round of exchanging cards as needed. Then it is the person with the best hand in the same manner as poker. With a round of betting both before and after exchange. The slight exception is this, you must always have one hand on the table, and for every seven or eight you have in your final hand, you will receive a slap from another player. After five slaps, you are eliminated. How does that sound to you?”

Assuming you agree he deals out 5 cards to each player. You have a total of 20 chips for each player.

Aaroth gets (1, 1, 1, 2, 2,) as his final hand, betting 3 chips, then a further 3 chips. (Full house)

Drunk 1 gets (3, 7, 7, 8, 8) as his final hand, betting 1 chip, then 1 chip, and is immediately slapped by Rolth, Aaroth and the other two drunks. (Two pair, but four slaps), and is knocked to the ground, where he remains for a few moments drinking another beer before sitting up and rejoining the game. His face is already beginning to welt up.

Drunk 2 gets (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) as his final hand, betting 3 chips, then 3 more chips.

Drunk 3 gets (1, 1, 2, 4, 5) as his final hand,betting 2 chips then 1 chip.

The pot stands at 23 chips, which all go to Aaroth as he wins the hand.

Kiwina Highlight to display spoiler: {Aaroth is betting in an attempt to get others to bet higher. There does appear to be some reason behind it, but it is not clear at this stage. }

Aaroth chuckles.

“Ah it seems my friend here…” he refers to Drunk 1 “... is perhaps not too long for this game. If he is eliminated by losing all his chips, then he is out. If he is eliminated by slaps i.e. he reaches being slapped five times, his chips are split between the rest of us evenly, with the remainder going to the person with the fewest.”

Angus Macgrump watches the drinks get slapped around, falling off chairs, clearly enjoying themselves, and not very good at the game.

Aaroth gets two pair ((2, 3, 3, J, J,)) Having bet 2 chips, then another 2 chips.

Drunk 1 gets ((1, 5, 6, 6, 7)) Having bet 2 chips then 1 chip, and immediately gets slapped very hard by Rolth, knocking him off his seat, and out of the game for good.

Drunk 2 gets ((1, 1, 2, 6, 6,)) Having bet 1 chip, then 2 chips.

Drunk 3 gets ((1, 5, 6, 8, 8)) Having bet 2 chips, then 1 chip, immediately receiving two slaps from the drunk and from Aaroth.

Rolth wins the pot! He gains 21 Chips.

Drunk 1 goes out, meaning his lot of chips (57!!) get divided evenly amongst all remaining players, with the remainder that cannot be divided going to the player(s) with the least.

You need to add two more Petals to the game.

Aaroth smiles widely as more Petals sit down. He doesn’t seem too bothered by the fact his chip pile isn’t the biggest. He is unfazed by Elyas’ large bets, almost finding them amusing.

Aaroth bets 3 chips, then bets a further 6, ((Final hand - 1, 2, 3, J, Q))

Drunk 2 bets 2 chips, then another 2, ((Final hand - 3, J, Q, K, K))

Drunk 3 bets 4 chips, then goes all in on the second round ((Final hand - K, K, K, 8, 8))

((OoC: Sorry, the question was asked but I failed to answer. Aaroth is dealing))

Aaroth bets 2 chips, then a further 2. He ends with a full House 1s full of Kings ((1, 1, 1, K, K))

Drunk 2 bets 2 chips, then another 2 chips, but ends on King high ((1, 2, 3, Q, K))

Drunk 3 bets 1 chip, then another 1 chip, he ends with three of a kind! Kiwina watches as the deck is passed to the next player. . . Looks like that's Drunk 2, which will be entertaining to watch.

"Cousin," he says to a spot above his left shoulder, "you like games. Have you figured this one out?" Kiwina watches Aaroth's cards carefully (perception = 29).

First Hand (5,5,6,7,8) bet 1 chip

Kiwina again wonders about trying for a straight. He doesn't know how good that would be, but he'd have two more slaps. He trades the 7 and 8 -- for a pair of 8's.

Second Hand (5,5,6,8,8) bet 1 chip

Well, that didn't work... 24 chips remain.

Rolth eyes the cards suspiciously, as it is literally unbelievable the kind of luck Aaroth is having. Unbelievable, hmm, I wonder... Throughout this round, including the final reveal, Rolth peers closely at the cards in his hand and around the table, trying to see through any potential illusion that might be masking the true results.

I need to work this out. See how he is tilting the odds. Still keeping his eyes on their opponents hands he pushes in three chips in total.

Aaroth gets two pair, betting 2 chips, then 1 chip. ((1, 1, 3, K, K))

Drunk 2 bets 2 chips, then 2 more chips. ((1, J, Q, Q, K))

The pot is won by Falco! With a full house. Aaroth doesn’t seem to be worried at all, after all, he does have the largest pile of chips, and the fewest slaps. He gets 14 Chips! However, Elyas gets slapped out the game and his chips are evenly divided between the remaining players, and Finnian gets his first slap from Aaroth.

The chip totals stand at

"Cousin was fond of games and practical jokes."

Kiwina is next in line to deal, but after taking the deck and staring at it for a moment he pauses. He starts to pass it on to Finnian , decides against that, and clumsily shuffles the deck. (Dex roll = 6, the cards get scattered over the table) "Sorry, I've never done this before," he apologizes while he gathers the cards (perception = 22, as far as the scattered cards go, did roughly the same number of each turn face up? Is the deck new or worn?).

Once the deck is back together, Kiwina deals slowly and carefully so as not to make another mistake.

First Hand (1,2,4,5,8) bet 1 chip

Kiwina again wonders about trying for a straight. He doesn't need to understand the odds or rewards to trade the 8 -- for a 3.

For once that worked... what does oit do for him? 27 chips remain.

As he sits and watches Tsak tries to recall the words of the Purple Duke. Did he actually say that Aaroth was wanted for cheating. Perhaps the ways and means are known by others? Even if the petals can't prove anything here and now maybe they can still present the demon to the Lord and have the bet declared null.

Rolth smiles predatorily at Aaroth. He is inwardly pleased that this game is of no consequence. We have permission from the Duke to capture Aaroth, despite his protestations of innocence. We agreed to play under duress, which in Rolth's mind absolves the Petals of any responsibility to carry out anything untoward on behalf of Aaroth. Aaroth will not be able to determine the location of the artifact that he seeks while he rots in the Duke's prison. And if he is dead because he resisted arrest, well, game over, right?

Thus satisfied, he keeps playing, trying to see whether we can get more clues to Aaroth's tricks. He looks for marked cards, Aaroth hiding cards up his sleeves or in tentacles, and any other such antics.

Rolth does his best to get his slap in on Aaroth first, then continues the conversation. "Don't call me 'sir', I work for a living! And I'm soooo terribly sorry that I'm not too up on demon ettiquette. I must have missed that day in bard camp last summer. Besides, there was this super cute liontauress who...well, I digress. I suppose that if half my parentage was from the other side of the Dropoff, I'd be reluctant to talk about it too. So,hey, if you don't want to talk about it, I can live with that." Supposing that he has sufficiently antagonized Aaroth for the moment, Rolth turns back to his cards.

Elyas quickly excuses himself from the back room for a few minutes. back in the common room he asks around for a deck of cards, first checking with the owner then just asking around. Assuming he can find one, he brings it back into the back room. when it is Aaroth's deal again, Elyas will place the new deck in front of the demon while the previous dealer is gathering the cards from the table.

My dear Aaroth, I couldn't help but notice some of the cards have been damaged. see here, these cards here have some unfortunate markings on them. I have found a new deck to be used.

as Aaroth deals, Elyas watches very carefully, loudly pointing out a misdeal when Aaroth tries to do the same thing Elyas spotted from the last time he dealt.
Oh, Aaroth, I do believe that card was meant for Finnian was it not? perhaps you have had too much to drink, but generally the deal should come from the top of the deck, should it not? perhaps you should pass the deal on to the next player who is maybe not so distracted as you.

At this point Elyas doesn't really care much about the etiquette of not butting into a game he is no longer a part of, as he is under the surface seething about the obvious cheating from Aaroth. For now he is opting to try to at least pretend to be helpful and polite, though really if this wasn't a demon of unknown strength Elyas would rather flip the table and start a fight.

Rolth Niheow responds to Aaroth’s response by trying to anagonize the creature. His game yields a pair and a slap!
Angus Macgrump can tell that Aaroth is rather annoyed by Rolth’s response but is managing to maintain his cool. Mostly.
Kiwina has a pair. Highlight to display spoiler: {You notice that Aaroth’s hands are quick, and he doesn’t always deal from the top of the deck. You also notice that despite the newness of the deck, some of the cards have slight damage on them.}
Tsak Rezar watches and considers deliver a slap to Aaroth, but realizes that since he is not playing at the table, such a slap could be considered an insult or perhaps even an unprovoked attack.
Falco Ambersier tries to insult Aaroth. His hand is excellent though. But he does get two slaps.
Elyas has been watching. In response to his concerns, Elyas seeks out a new deck of cards. He is sold one in haste for 1 gold piece. He offers the deck to Aaroth saying, “My dear Aaroth, I couldn't help but notice some of the cards have been damaged. see here, these cards here have some unfortunate markings on them. I have found a new deck to be used.”

Aaroth replies dryly, “Surely you must know that I cannot simply accept any deck offered to me. We do have rules here you know.”

He responds to the seemingly distracted and silent Finnian, ”Ah, sitting out a hand? You should know it will still cost you to sit at the table.” One of Aaroth’s tentacle reaches up and casually scoops away 2 of Finnian’s chips to the center of the table.

He deals out cards to the drunk. Dismayed at the potential slaps, the drunk bets two chips and ask for 4 more cards. He best 2 more and ends with 1,2,J, K, 7 and is soundly slapped by Aaroth.

Then Aaroth deals out his own cards. He bets 5 chips, and then take another 4 cards, betting another 10. He ends with a 1 and 4 Queens! Incredible luck! He smiles at Falco, ”Well, it seemed that whatever gods you pray to are fickle and have given their blessing to me instead.”

He scoops the chips to himself. And then two tentacles slap Falco’s feathered face as he says, ”Ahhh. Five slaps. Pity that puts you out of the game. Is there another that would take his place? Things simply don’t look good for your friend’s ship I’m afraid.”

For Falco, Highlight to display spoiler: {Falco is pretty sure something was not right with all of this.}

The drunk points at Falco, ”Ha, aha ha ha ha. Looks like the chicken lost. Ha ha ha.”

Falco’s remaining 39 chips are then distributed, with 7 chips going to the drunk and 8 chips to everyone else.

The pot is 38, won in by Aaroth!

I see how it is Aaroth. you do not want to play with any deck other than the one you have marked. not even one purchased at a reputable gambling house. I have seen your dealing, you do not deal in the way normally accepted in a game of chance.

as Aaroth is sorting out chips from the idle Finnian and the loss of Falco, Elyas deftly scoops up hanfuls of cards. he lays them out, including the 4 queens from Aaroth. now having seen the marks on some cards and the way Aaroth shuffles he is expecting to see matching marks on the 4 queens
18 perception.

Assuming he finds what i think he will find:
It is as I thought. these four queens are marked for Aaroth to deal them to himself. I hereby call you a cheat, with these as my witness. I declare the current bet void, and Cecil's ship forfeit. Your choice Aaroth, you can cede this game and we will walk away with our friend, or we will stop this game and report to the Duke and the law enforcement. or, we can deal with this as men did in my hometown when a cheat was caught in the act. Elyas punctuates this statement by dancing a small flame in his palm.

Rolth Niheow is disappointed that none of Duke's representatives seem to be present. He whispers to Elyas, "Elyas, this demon has no shame, but the Duke's men or the proprietor might be interested in his cheating. Perhaps you could bring them here to see." As for the game, he has 3 of a kind and no slaps, betting a total of 6.

Elyas tells Aaroth that he is not dealing properly.

Aaroth deals cards out to the drunk who bets 5 and asks for three more cards. He bets 5 more, ending with two pair, kings high and is due a slap.

Aaroth finishes his hand, asking for three more cards and ending with three of a kind having bet a total of 10 himself. He says, ”Ah, you see. This one has won the pot, and I am due a slap.” The pot of 30 chips as is won by Rolth!.

Elyas grabs the cards and looks carefully at them. Highlight to display spoiler: {He can see that some are a bit more worn than others and marked is some way. Sure enough, some of the face cards seem to have similar marks, but they are hard to see.} ”It is as I thought. The face cards are marked for Aaroth to deal them to himself. I hereby call you a cheat, with these as my witness. I declare the current bet void, and Cecil's ship forfeit. Your choice Aaroth, you can cede this game and we will walk away with our friend, or we will stop this game and report to the Duke and the law enforcement. or, we can deal with this as men did in my hometown when a cheat was caught in the act.” Elyas punctuates this statement by dancing a small flame in his palm.

Aaroth steps back from the table as he pulls out another deck. He smiles though the tentacles as he replies, “Keep the cards if you wish. I have more. Call whatever guards you wish - I am prepared for that. Make whatever accusations justify your actions. I am prepared for that as well. Walk away from the game if you wish, but Cecil will remain in my debt.”

All attention is drawn to the table, as a few of the onlookers rise from their chairs with bottles or clubs in their hands. Aaroth steps back from the table holding the new deck.

The room is silent and tense. Then the drunk says, “Heyyy! Hey, Hey, Hey. Don quit now. Ahm na doin so bad!"

As Task turns to examine the room he spots a young man whose clothing is wrinkled, his hair is a mess, he has a patchy beard or perhaps he started to shave and didn't finish or started and stopped in a different spot a few times. He's messy looking. His equipment could be taken better care of, but is serviceable. The man was favoring one leg as he stood there with a longbow in one hand and an arrow in the other. There are three empty pints sitting at his place at the table and a walking stick leaning against the chair behind him.

The young man was average height with a little extra around the middle and his hands heavily calloused from work. He might have been a strong fellow but with his loose mail and baggy clothing it was impossible to tell about his build.

At his feet is an old pack that might have once born a military insignia, but it had long since fallen from the leather pack. Stuffed into the pack and extending out of the top one one side was a stick or something wrapped in an old blanket. By the condition of the rope and cloth that bind the item it hasn't been opened in years. The young man wore a simple soldiers belt with a well used shortsword in a battered sheath that was rimed in dirt as if it hadn't been drawn in ages. The young man looks tired, his eyes are droopy, and when he moves it's as if it takes a great effort to do so, yet his grip on the bow is firm and he seems confident about how to use it.

"I'm terribly sorry, but divine to make your acquaintance. This chap ah cheat? Goodness me!" he said to Tsak with a nod at the half-orc.

Elyas likewise calls Aaroth as a cheater, clarifying the heroes he faces and that he cannot win now.
Kiwina notes the marks on the cards and watches the others’ reactions.
Rolth and Falco also call Aaroth out, telling him his deal with Cecil is over, and are ready to attack the octopoid creature.
Tsak puts his hand on his sword and is ready for anything.
Mak, a plainly dressed man with a bow across the table from Tsak rises and says, "I'm terribly sorry, but divine to make your acquaintance. This chap ah cheat? Goodness me!"

So to have a number of others in the bar risen from their seats. Most are looking nervously around and start to rush out of the room, anticipating a fight. Others rise and look menacingly at the heroes that are speaking up, holding broken bottles or clubs. And there are a few in various stats if inebriation that seem interested in what’s about to go down.

Aaroth barks back, ”You do gooders are all alike. You threaten the authorities, but you don’t know my influence. Send me to jail and I’ll be out in a trice. But it seem you all need to learn our local ways, along with some manors!”

And with that, Aaroth back up and spins a card out out behind some of the heroes, and where it lands a weird mound of fatty flesh springs up as with half-formed limbs and a dripping tumorous face. This creature attacks Angus. It misses. And it’s about the grossest thing Angus has ever seen.

Here is your map. This is a Google Sheets spreadsheet. Please move yourself or let me know where you go (“I move to Z12”). The ones denoted with an H represent both humans and half-orcs. Other are Minotaurs or Liontaurs.

I marked those that are behaving threateningly in yellow. So far, only this weird fleshy creature has actually attacked. Some of the ones in yellow seem a bit unsure.

Rolth shouts out that Aaroth is a monster not even from this plane, and launches into a speech to inspire his friends, granting them a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls and a +1 morale bonus on saves against charm and fear.
Kiwina takes a step and attack the fleshy thing. Ewww. She connects, but does no damage against its rubbery skin.
Angus hits the thing with his rapier, but again some of the blow is turned away by the thing’s skin.
Falco calls out Aaroth and tries to calm the others in the room as he readies an action to shoot Aaroth.
Mak moves forward, but his shot misses, bouncing off some sort of invisible shield. But others have hit so it not an all encompassing shield. His local knowledge suggests Highlight to display spoiler: {This Aaroth may indeed be well connected locally, and may have sufficient resources to … affect the outcome in his favor. Elyas steps up beside Cecil who is bound to a chair. He casts a Scorching Ray at the creature, and though it sears into his flesh it does a less damage than he would have thought.

Bar patrons continue to run out. Most seem to want no part of what’s going on. A few seem quite drunk and are less worried by the threat. The stupid drunk that was playing cards next to Falco yells, ”Hey! Ahm not dun. Yer not all cheatin me outta my winnings by startin a fight! Siddown and play! Hey tentacle boy - deal me sum cards!”

Aaroth snarls, ”You flower-people think your sooo noble, coming to this Cecil’s aid. Did he tell you that the ship was mine before he swindled me? Did you know that?”[b] Then he says to noone in particular, [b]”Come on you lubbars! You’re paid to keep an eye on things in here! Well do you jobs and put these miscreants down!”

Then he tosses out another card as Falco fires his readied shot. It does a bit of damage, but not quite what he’d hoped. Where the card lands, there is suddenly another horrible creature - small in size, it is grey and bloated - and surprisingly quick! It attacks Finnian, hitting twice for a total of 10 damage!

The fleshy thing attacks Kiwina twice, missing both times.

About half of they bar patrons that rose to oppose you drop their improvised weapons and run! The rest (yellow) attack.

A Minotaur stabs at Mak with a broken bottle and misses.
A half-orc whacks Angus with a club for 6 damage.
A human attacks Falco and misses!

Kiwina stomps on the Lemure and this time does some damage, though less she thought. She calls upon a spirit to start casting a summoning spell (full round action to cast, see my email on this.)
Rolth continues his inspiring chant, and moves up to attack Aaroth. He hits tentacle man with a mighty blow. (Rolth will need to be squeezing to fit behind the bar and attack, and he cannot charge while squeezing. Also, on either a charge or when you move and attack you can only take one attack.)
Tzak tries to intimidate the half-orc attacking whack Angus. The half-orc is not impressed, so Tzak hits him and hurts him badly.
Angus attacks the Lemure but misses.
Falco attempts a tricky move and succeeds avoiding an attack from the human! Aaroth gets an AOO, but misses. (Just to clarify, that line is a wall.)

Elyas steps back and casts Glitterdust. None of the creatures saves. The Lemure and the half-orc are blinded, but Tzak also needs to make a DC 16 Will Save!
Finnian rolls over the bar, but is attacked by the Dretch in the process. The Dretch hits Finnian for two points. Finnian is now behind the bar. The half-orc near Tzak screams, ”Ahhh! Sorcery! I can’t see!” He stabs in the general direction of Tzak, but his blow goes wide. The human near Aaroth attacks Rolth with a club, but misses.

The blind Lemure claws at Angus, but cannot see. The Dretch claws at Kiwina, hitting her twice for a total of 6 damage.

Another human screams that he cannot see and stumbles around. Other bar patrons scramble out of the door or hide behind an upturned table. A few seem too drunk to notice much.

Aaroth grimaces and steps back, as he tosses another card down in front of Rolth. You can see that he holds a spear in one hand. ”You confront forces you do not understand.” A a thin, lanky wolf with reddish-brown fur, white claws, and burning, fiery red eyes springs up where the card lands. Mak drops a heavy money pouch on the table in front of the Minotaur, and then he shoots. While he misses Aaroth, he does notice that the Minotaur does not take any attacks of opportunity as he shoots.

Rolth takes minimal damage from the flames and attacks the Hell Hound in front of him, hitting three times for a total of 26 damage. Rolth does note that this creature does not seem to have any damage reduction against his attacks.

Kiwina lays into the lemure, and he manages to inflict a total of 4 damage on the rubbery thing. Kiwina’s spirits manage to complete their summoning spell and a weird, blue, puffy head appears on the bar with a tiny little body beneath it. It casts Doom at Aaroth.

Tzak manages to resist the blindness, but also fails to connect with the half-orc as he watches the poor thing flail around.

Falco moves and shoots at Aaroth, but misses. He says, “I represent the power of the warper-sar, a power far greater then whatever you speak of calamari head."

Elyas moves to get a better position, pulling out a crossbow as he goes. Then he cast Magic Missile at the Dretch, inflicting 8 damage. Also, Elyas knows that Aaroth is a Cecaelia. He is not a demon, but is a monsterous aquatic humanoid. He can tell this creature usually does not have damage reduction, but Aaroth seems to. Also, Cecaelia usually are human on top and octopoid on the bottom. (Sorry, put that under Finnian last round, so I just stated “out loud” here.)

Finnian shoots twice at the Dretch, hitting the little creature twice, though the second arrow fails to actually pierce the bloated thing (DR5 and it looks like you meant 5 damage instead of 15 for that second arrow, right?)

The minotaur picks up the bag of coin left by Mak on the table, and with a nod to Mak he turns to walk out.
The blind half-orc next to Tzak stabs wildly in the air with his broken bottle, ”Gaaa. Don’t touch me! I’ll cut ya I will!”
The human neat Rolth swings his club at the Liontaur, hitting him for 6 damage.
The blind Lemure attacks Kiwina and manages to hit him once for 2 points of damage.
The Dretch attacks Kiwina as well, and while most blow miss Kiwina is clawed for 2 points of damage.
Hell Hound bites back at Rolth and misses.

Aaroth shrugs off the Doom spell from the mite. He snarls at Falco. ”Warper Sar? Some irrelevant bird leader among your kind?” Then he casts a spell, and Falco is blinded (DC 14 Fort save negates this.)

The barkeeps in the larger room have disappeared behind the nearby doors. Bar patrons continue to run out. Mostly. You do see a couple of wobbly, inebriated half-orcs behind the bar gathering up as many bottles as they can carry.

Astonishingly, the drunk you were playing cards with is still there guarding his chips. ”Hey, ya rottin squid. Yer not gettin out here without finish thisss game. Ahm on a winnin streak!”

Kiwina tries to make an end of this lemure, with another full attack. (Spear, sword, and hoof hit for 9, 4, and 5 damage, respectively - other hoof misses)

Falco chuckles as he shakes off the attempt to blind him. He holds his position and and simply fires another arrow at Aaroth, even as the arrow flies he know the damage will be limited if it hits.

Mak was getting frustrated at Aaroths defenses and with a sideways glance at the stationary minotaur he fired another arrow. This time he slowed down and steadied himself before loosing the supposedly deadly shaft. Again, the arrow flew wild as it neared the demon.

OOC: Longbow +9+1(Inspire Courage)=+10 to Hit, Roll 19, Miss. I'm beginning to dislike this die roller. ;)

Mak noticed the minotaur wasn't moving. "One needn't have tried to bribe you, one's old bean, one's daaarrrling. it seems aaaaruhth has bally all to feaaar frum mah sweet self. Heavens above! How dreadful!"

Kiwina attacks the Lemure and his hoof sinks into the weird mound of flesh. As it settles to the floor it stops moving.

Angus burries his rapier in the Lemure, making sure it’s dead.

Rolth lashes out at the Hell Hound, ending it. The Hell Hound vanishes. Then Rolth swipes a claw at the nearby human, opening up a gash in the man’s side.

Tzak sees the half-orc in front of him and hacks it with his falchon. The man’s blind eyes go wide as he slumps to the floor dead.

Falco shakes off Aaroth’s attempt to blind him and then shoots at him, only to see his arrow deflected by an invisible barrier.

Mak shoots at Aaroth and misses, but he can barely see Aaroth from where he stands. (From here, Aaroth has cover against Aaroth, so -4 to Mak’s ranged attacks.)

Elyas shoots at the Dretch, but misses.

Finnian shoots at the Dretch, but the small creature has cover against Finnian (-4 to hit) it’s a miss.

The minotaur can see this is going badly and hastily exits the bar.
The human neat Rolth swings his club at the Liontaur but only manages to damage the gaming table, making the chips jump. The drunk barks at him, ”Hey, ya lummmmox, yer messin up the game! Less get bak to playin!”
The Dretch claws impassively at Kiwina, hitting him twice for 6 damage.
The bodies of the Lemure and the Hell Hound vanish.

Aaroth grimmaces, and casts a spell. A glittering trident appears in the air near Flaco. It stabs at him for 9 damage. Then Aaroth moves.

The barkeeps in the larger room have disappeared behind the nearby doors. Bar patrons continue to run out. There are a few that seem to be drunk and enjoying the show, and there are still a couple half-orcs behind the bar gathering up as many bottles as they can carry.

Rolth will move away from the injured human (potentially drawing an AoO) and approach Aaroth, ending in AE-AF/14-15 (finally unsqueezed!) He is sick of all these casting shennanigans, so he will attempt to grapple Aaroth (potentially drawing another AoO if Aaroth threatens.) He continues to bellow encouragement to the Petals (Inspire Courage).

(Combat maneuver check = 26 to grapple Aaroth)

Decisions. . .

The dretch looks weak, and Angus made an impressive blow, but Kiwina wants to make sure. He lands four blows (hits AC 14 or higher), two of which (at 7 and 9 damage) might hurt it.

Tsak figures that Kiwina and Angus can take care of the creature Aaroth created, and the funny talkin guy that helped the party seems to be out of trouble. So the next order of business is to ensure Aaroth doesn't flee. Tsak moves across the casino floor, closing the distance with the slippery so 'n' so. (double move to AB17)

Elyas yells at his companions
Watch out, he's making a break for it!
He sees Aaroth moving away from the combat once things suddenly swing against him with the majority of his allies falling almost at the same time. Rather than continuing to fight the Dretch, Elyas moves to prevent Aaroth's escape.

Trying to avoid capturing his own allies, Elyas sees the most likely exit for Aaroth and tries to cut it off. He weaves a symbol in the air, twisting a small string into an intricate pattern in mere seconds. anyone looking closely would see it was actually a real spider web strand. in response, clear across the bar a massive spider's web forms, coating floor, walls and people in sticky thick ropes of web.

[ooc: casting web centered on square AF20. I have marked the edges of the web with grey squares. Aaroth is not currently inside the area of the web, but it neatly corners him where he is. in order to move south at all, he would move through difficult terrain, and would need to make a CMB or Escape artist check at DC 15 or be grappled by webs. the doors on that side of the room are also covered in webs.]

"Good move Rolth, don't let this cheater get away."

Moving away form the magic summoned weapon Falco moves and attempts to get over the bar, in front of Aaroth. {Acrobatics: 19} He drops his bow by his feet, standing with one foot on it, and pulls a cold iron tipped spear form his Efficient Quiver.

{oos: Can I move though those grey squares to poke at him next turn?}

Using a chair as a step Mak climbed up on the table and started walking down it's length. He wasn't too concerned about the items left on it as he moved along the wooden structure. At the tables end Mak could see Aaroth around the corner and took aim, firing at the squid headed demon. Mak took careful aim and let his arrow fly. This battle had been sobering and Mak's head was clearing. That made the difference as the arrow punctured Aaroths shield and plunged into the demons side.

OOC: 2 Squares to get onto the table(Difficult terrain) and 4 squares down it's length. The Dretch is small, so Mak shouldn't provoke an AoO because he's above and out of it's reach? Aaroth has partial cover +2 to AC, for a 24 AC.
