Scene 3: The Devil is In the Grass

Sol pumps his fist in celebration before looking around sheepishly to see if anyone noticed. He pats Haemir on the back and wishes he had done more, but at least he got in one daze that helped bring the momma down!

Bigby wakes up a little confused, but quickly catches up with the situation, any maybe even learns a little about himself and his place in this pack. Haemir welcomes him back, while Fand preens a bit while telling Xel'Aw the story of how he saved Haemir's life once before.

Caelwyn, Bigby, and 'Lil all contribute to healing the party's wounds, which is warmly welcomed by all. 'Lil is a little grumpy, but gets a grip on herself—and Ramona—and thanks Xel'Aw for the help.

Xel'Aw is in turns chastened and grateful at the recent turn of events. Fand has a pile of seeds to look forward too in the future.

Grindar joins in the celebration of Bigby's return to the living, and offers some ideas for finishing the evening well rested. Caelwyn sagely suggests moving away from the froggy bloodstains before returning to your slumber. Thich agrees that this is a good idea.

You are able to remake camp a safe distance away, and the rest of the night passes peacefully, with nothing disturbing those on watch. You can hear some beastly noises back in the direction of your old camp, but nothing appears to follow you from there. Perhaps whatever came upon the battlefield had its appetite sated by all the frog legs.

In the morning, the sun rises hot and bright. With a determined look, Thich is ready to lead you onward towards your goal. After a few hours travel, you see something very unusual—three humanoid skeletons suspended from bamboo-like grasses, flailing about helplessly. The winds here are shifting willy-nilly, and occasional dust devils sweep through the grasses.

Do you approach, circumnavigate the area, or choose some other option? No guts, no glory!

Caelwyn is immediately alert for potential danger (Perception 10). "I feel like we should at least try to figure out what this means or who those poor devils were...shall we take a closet look?"

Bigby will cast a detect magic on the skeletons and the bamboo like grass. Also uses knowledge nature (23) on the grass to see if he can find out anything helpful. His mind gets a little bit paranoid and he looks around for giant holes in the ground...better not be ants, he thinks. Wolfgang will try to use his scent ability to detect if any other creatures are nearby the skeletons (will have to move to 30' of it).

Caelwyn looks for dangers, but sees nothing obvious, and advocates a closer look.

Grindar agrees and moves to sneak up, crunching his way through the overgrowth toward the skeletons. As he gets closer, he spots a hand-lettered sign, saying 'Mutations ahead', and can see an odd sort of tunnel of grass behind where the skeletons are dancing from the stickgrass. You can easily avoid the skeletons to get into the tunnelgrass if you choose to.

'Lil suggests that Caelwyn use his ability to detect evil, to save her resources for the inevitable meatball surgery after a fight.

Xel'Aw and Bigby detect no magic other than moderate necromancy on the skeletons—what you would expect from such vile creations, and Wolfgang scents nothing that you can't see, although the haphazard winds make such things difficult here.

Sol thinks it looks like a warning…

Grindar sneaks back (stealth 14) to his friends and shares what he learned. He then says, “Undead leave a bad taste in my mouth, I vote we dispatch these skeletons, and then check out the tunnel, but if you all would rather bypass the undead pests, I will go along with the majority”.

Caelwyn has realized that these skeletons are indeed animated by necromancy and a truly dangerous look comes into his eyes. "Before we destroy these abominations".... he will cast detect evil on them and on the tunnel entrance, if possible, to get a clue as to what may lie beyond them.

Grindar sneaks back and reports on what he has seen. He wants to destroy the undead and check out the tunnel.

'Lil asks about the skeletons, and is reminded by Grindar that they had necromantic auras, so suggests busting them up. Caelwyn is able to confirm that they are evil, but the tunnel entrance shows no such signs.

Xel'Aw teases Caelwyn about his paladinhood, apparently concluding that he falls short.

Bigby has bad recollections of the ant swarm, but sucks it up and is ready to go into the tunnel.

Sol looks to the others for a solution, this not being his area of expertise. Haemir looks to Thich, who shrugs, indicating that this is a new one to him too.

Thus deciding to destroy the skeletons and investigate the tunnel, you manage to easily dispatch the restrained abominations. Beyond are the swirling dust devils, tinged with a weird red color and lazily sweeping across the area in the weird crosswinds. To safely reach the tunnel—which the dust devils do not seem to be entering—might take a bit of derring do.

Make an acrobatics check vs DC 12 to arrive safely.

If you fail, make a DC 16 reflex save to avoid getting badly caught up.

If you pass the reflex save, you go back to where you started.

If you fail the reflex save, please make a DC12 FORT save. You must make a new DC16 reflex save on a future round to escape.

(OOC: If you can think of anything that might help with any of those, feel free to suggest it and I'll apply a modifier to whatever you attempted.)

Haemir offers: "This spell will slightly assist..." and will cast Toros's Taur Try on anyone who wants it (base gives +1 on acrobatics (& stealth) for 10 minutes but anyone is welcome to all three versions if you want).

After having cast it (if everyone agrees to go) he nimbly dodges his way over (Acrobatics:14) whilst Fand flies around.

Bigby casts guidance on Wolfgang for his acrobatics check, +1 skill check. Wolfgang makes his acrobatics check across the crosswinds and towards the tunnels (acrobatics: 22). "Glad you are in charge of making those moves Wolfgang. That's not my skill set." Bigby looks relieved with Wolfgangs acrobatics. He looks back at the rest to see how they will do as if to encourage them on. "come on guys you got this."

Caelwyn, after looking dubiously at the dust devils decides to remove his breastplate and place it, and his shield, on his back. That should make this a little easier (ooc: Am I free of penalties now?)

He will accept Haemir's offer, to give him an advantage he hopes. Unfortunately, he gets caught in one of the faster dust devils as is passes by him. Thankfully, he is able to pull back in time and return to where he began.

Grindar removes his breastplate and straps it to his backpack. Then he make a run for it weaving and dodging to avoid the dust devils, arriving on the other side unscathed, but not without some close calls. (Acrobatics 12+2=14) on the other side, he immediately begins putting his breastplate back on, thinking to himself, “This would be so much easier if this thing was made of mithril”.

'Lil doesn't dance around danger so much as she barrels right through it. She'll accept Haemir's spell before she does just that: lowers her head, waits for an opening, and charges across.

It's no good, though. She get's caught and fails her save. The devil in the grass done got poor 'Lil.

Haemir and Fand manage to make it safely across, by land and air.

Bigby and Wolfgang also move smoothly through the tricksy winds, with Grindar close behind. The latter armors up immediately. Sol makes it too, squeaking by just ahead of a dust devil, practically tripping over Xel'Aw as he crosses the finish line.

Caelwyn almost gets caught, but finds his way back to the start.

'Lil gets caught up in a dust devil, and is spit out on the tunnel side, thrown onto her hands and knees. ('Lil, please make the DC12 FORT save)

Most of you are on the tunnel side of the dust devils, with 'Lil retching on the ground and Caelwyn still stuck back yonder. What next?

Caelwyn, apparently having learned a thing or two the first time, leaps and twists through the twisters to safety, but sees no way or need to help 'Lil through. Thich has also made the crossing safely.

Grindar smiles before realizing that 'Lil might be in trouble (even with the guidance from Bigby.)

'Lil looks up with red-rimmed eyes and coughs a bit, spitting out reddish dust from the devils. Sol moves to help her up, as does Haemir, with Xel'Aw cheering them on. She starts to break out in a purplish rash and looks a little flushed before retching a little more.

'Lil is sickened but seems able to carry on if you choose to do so. At least nothing has attacked you from the tunnel... yet.

'Lil lands, coughs out red dust, and stands straight up. She expertly grabs Ramona off her back and starts stomping towards the dust devils. "Alright you little buggers, COME TRY THAT AGAIN." She swings at nothing and gets turned around by the momentum of the hammer. She spins a few times before collapsing and losing her breakfast.

She stands unsteadily. "This whole blasted place is tryin'a kill me, but it's gonna have to try harder than that. Let's go..."

Caelwyn ponders the best way ahead. Grindar looks concerned and lost, not sure who can help 'Lil. 'Lil takes some big swings at a whole lot of nothing, managing only to lose her balance and her lunch, but then says she is ready to go. Bigby offers a sympathetic comparison to being eaten by a frog, then follows. Haemir is willing to wait, but seems to be preempted by the others. Sol wonders aloud whether anyone has a spell to help counteract the sickness, but it doesn't seem to be the case. Xel'Aw remains silent on the matter, as does a concerned-looking Thich.

You move down the tunnel of grass, eyes peeled for signs of danger. After about 100 feet, you arrive at point where the grass tunnel yields to a real tunnel into the slope of a hillock. You can see that it opens into a room about 60 feet ahead, and there is a dim green glow in the room, but you cannot make out more from this vantage point.

What could this mean? Should you investigate further?

“Well we’ve come this far”, Grindar says as the green glowing room comes into view, “Let me try to sneak up and try to investigate”. As he tries to sneak up on the room, Grindar steps on a branch causing a loud snap.(stealth 5) He instantly freezes looking around for signs of an enemy, (perception 23) prepared to attack anything that attacks him. If nothing attacks, he will continue on to investigate the room.

Readied action: two handed weapon attack
D20+6=25 for 2+6=8 damage

Caelwyn has, by this time, put his breastplate back on. Realizing that he will likely make extra noise if he follows his half-orc companion, Caelwyn instead readies his shield and trident as Grindar advances. He is prepared to charge forward and attack if enemies appear.

He also looks around in confusion, wondering what Haemir is looking at. (Perception 6)

Xel'Aw is unusually quiet, he seems to be ruminating on something. You just let her there, you coward. Why didn't you rush back and help Lil? But he remains silent otherwise until SNAP the noise cuts through and Lil and Bigby speaking ahead bring him back to the present. Xel'Aw readies his crossbow. (Crit, failed to confirm (nat 20 and a nat 1 yeesh) for 2 damage if something jumps out)

The dust devils must have also clouded your minds, but you belatedly realize that you already managed to destroy the restrained skeletons without a real fight. (OOC See, Friday's post)

Haemir looks around for the skeletons, and spots their remains back where you started before crossing the dust devil swept area. Grindar tries to sneak up on the room, but you can all hear him loudly crunching through the dirt in the tunnel. Bigby and Wolfgang move up to help him. Caelwyn gears up and gets ready for trouble, as does the green-around-the-gills 'Lil. Xel'Aw thinks quietly on his self-imagined cowardice, but covers his fellows as they move forward. Sol adds to the racket, but still nothing rises to the challenge.

Grindar and Bigby take a look into the room. Grindar and Bigby Highlight to display spoiler: {can see that it is roughly 30 foot square and covered in three types of unusual growths. Haemir, satisfied that the skeletons are destroyed, loads his crossbow and waits for the scouts to return.

Grindar checks out the mushrooms, but they are nothing that he is familiar with. He reports back on their presence and description. The room is roughly 30 foot square and covered in three types of unusual growths. The light comes from some large mushrooms that glow green in the darkness. Whilst listening to Bigby Haemir studies the whirlwinds until he is happy they are safe to forage, then (pending Caelwyn giving the all clear) he makes some mystical gestures and mutters something intelligible. Not far away a slight rustle in the grasses occurs ~ or was it just the wind?

"Ah there you are Jeeves, I was wondering where you'd got to. Be a good chap will you and take this. Please would you fetch some of the dark red mushrooms in there? Be careful not to disrupt anything else". Taking his scroll case he dumps the contents in to his back pack and passes it to .. well no one really... (a.k.a. Jeeves).
"If anyone else wants any just place your containers here" he says gesturing to the ground.

Just as the looks start to exchange the scroll case dances up and away...

If anyone else goes in he will ask if they want to or to allow Jeeves. If they persist he will hold Jeeves back. In other words Jeeves won't disrupt anyone else's forage. Once done he takes out some Botany vials and hands them to Jeeves asking him to obtain some of the green glowing fungus, and then lastly he will instruct Jeeves to disturb some of the black and brown mushrooms and then scrape up the dust in to a vial and put the lid on... This will be the last thing we do as the room will be unsafe from here on in.

Haemir is a keen botanist (Knowledge Nature: 21) and will adjust his tactics (or leave the green one) if he thinks something else is better or take on board any party suggestions. He will instruct Jeeves in each stage - one bit at a time a time (so as to make it lots of short simple orders) and stay well back (at the edge of his spell range).

With the badjuju one Haemir will direct Jeeves to clean any excess off (after corking it) and leave the cloth behind and then wrap it in some more before handing it over.

Throughout the whole experience the elf seems quite excited and when done secures the stash and takes out a book to make some notes. Thrilled to the core to discover an unseen herb for him.

Bigby is able to provide an impressive amount of information on the various mushrooms, and is interested in collecting some of the BloodAngels. Before he does, however, Haemir pulls out a simple marionette-like bit of string and wood, moves his hands in a complicated pattern, and speaks a few eldritch syllables. There is a rustle in the grass as the invisible Jeeves arrives on the scene and proceeds to do Haemir's bidding. Jeeves is able to carefully collect samples of each type, with enough Glowtruffles for 8 concoctions (once prepared), 12 of the BoodAngel, and a very small amount of the Badjuju dust, which is hard to collect. Sol is impressed, and offers to spend his power next time such a thing is required. Xel'Aw uses a mage hand to assist this time as well. He wonders if you could harvest the juju things and make some sort of memory bomb, but it seems as if it takes so little to set them off that it wouldn't be possible with any method available to you at this point. Bigby cracks a joke about already forgetting what is going on…at least you think it is a joke.

Caelwyn expresses concern about carrying around any of the juju dust, but is reassured by Hameir that you have not collected enough to affect a person. Caelwyn then keeps watch and asks aloud about the provenance of Jeeves, with Haemir offering a simplistic explanation and Fand implying that there might be some magic involved.

Grindar keeps his distance, not judging but not wanting to be a user of the BloodAngel himself.

'Lil looks even sicker, if that is possible. Could she be getting worse, not better, over time? Thich seems concerned about her condition.

Meanwhile, you have collected what seems to be useful here in the cave tunnel. Time to get back on the trail, or do you have more that you want to try here?

Haemir stores away the findings, and inquires into your readiness to move on.

Bigby casts detect poison on 'Lil, but finds none. He offers a cure light wounds, but soon learns that it will not help (OOC: you do not need to spend the spell slot, you gain the below information before you can do so.) Xel'Aw wonders what might be going on here, and whether there is something that could be done to help.

'Lil tries to shrug off the additional assistance, but not before Grindar can get a close enough look to diagnose the problem. He thinks back to the odd red tinge in the dust devils, ruminates on the symptoms, and reaches a dire prognosis. 'Lil has been afflicted by the Sargrass Sickness, associated with mutated Bloodweed! It must have been caught up and carried by the dust devils from some other location. You need to act fast—it gets progressively worse and in just a couple of days will turn the afflicted into raging monsters, with no known hope of a cure.

Fortunately, Bigby has already determined that the Glowtruffles should be able to help. It will take four hours of careful work to prepare an infusion, requiring a DC 15 Craft Alchemy check. Sol up until that point was despondent about not having the right kind of magic, but his ears might perk up at this news…

"I am certain I can, as I do not think we have the time to do anything else."

He takes a deep breath as he begins. You notice he continues with singular focus, he doesn't deviate from the task, almost paying no attention to anything else going on around, almost as if nothing else around him exists while he works. If someone offers to help he will offer accurate, and simple (ish) instructions such as "Crush that so no piece is larger than a few grains of salt." or "Stir this constantly and at a steady pace."

He works quickly and efficiently to turn the Glowtruffles into the required infusion, not even taking a break or showing any signs of slowing down until it is ready, clearly very much in his element.

Caelwyn cracks a joke and leads the party just far enough away from the tunnel and dust devil to find a safe place for brewing concoctions, heading Haemir's advice that the party not run into other trouble before resolving this challenge. Grindar gives Sol some insight into the task at hand, while Bigby offers some moral support and a guidance spell to Sol to assist his alchemy efforts. Xel'Aw and Haemir offer willing if untrained assistance. 'Lil is acting more like she has a Man-Cold than the Sargrass Sickness, but eventually agrees to be treated, if she must.

Sol gets down to business, working in a focused and methodical manner, oblivious to all around him. Other than a few terse instructions, he communicates little, but exactly four hours later, he looks up, seemingly surprised that the rest of the Wold is still around him, and nods. He hands the infusion to 'Lil, who gamely drinks it down in one go. It takes a few minutes, but you can all see that she is slowly getting some of her normal color back and standing a little straighter. She's not one hundred percent, but seems to be on the mend!

Fand tilts her head to one side and gives Sol a strange look whilst he works but after a while she shakes it off and takes to the air.

Haemir studies 'Lil as she drinks the brew - almost holding his breath and breathing out a sigh of relief as some of her colour starts to return. Slapping Sol on the back he says "Well done brother, that was an excellent job"! Collecting his back pack he waits for everyone, "Right, if everyone is ready? Let's get out of here".

The professor frowns as the group sets off wondering what other strange things are out here in the plains...

Seeing ‘Lil's recovery, Grindar is overjoyed. He runs over to Sol and embraces him in a over-exuberant bear hug, lifting the man off his feet saying, ”I knew you could do it Bro!” He then gently sets the mage down and turns to ‘Lil. He is about to give her the same treatment, but one look from her is all it takes for him to see the folly in such an action, so instead he simply places his hand on her shoulder and says, ”I’m overjoyed to see you on the mend sister!”

Caelwyn keeps a somewhat distracted watch during the alchemical process.

Fand gives Sol a bit of a strange look during the proceeding, while Haemir gives him a hearty attaboy before recommending that you return to your journey.

Grindar too is overjoyed, adding his own bearhug to the backslapping. He wisely chooses to be less demonstrative with 'Lil. 'Lil gives one final heave, then brightens and thanks Sol for his work. She's ready to go too, as is a thankful Bigby, who remarks that you may need those other mushrooms in the future.

Xel'Aw for once lets you proceed in silence.

Sol smiles a little uncertainly at all the accolades and practically falls over when slapped on the back, but appreciates it nonetheless.

You get back on the trail, with Thich pointing out the rapidly approaching Crystal Mountains ahead. He expects to arrive within about a day or two. Are there any measures you would like to take as you get closer?

Xel'Aw, if someone notices, repacks his gear a couple times trying to make sure that nothing jingles on him. Caelwyn asks what to expect when you arrive. Thich responds, "It is a beautiful but dangerous place. The various crystals in the range resonate with any loud noises or impacts, and if that resonance builds up enough—a threshold quite easily reached—then they can explode, shattering into shards that will flay you. We monks have a chant that can silence the resonance, within a small radius that depends on the kinds of crystal nearby and the volume of the disturbance. It would be wise to remain close to me as we move through the mountains."

Grindar listens to this and keep an eye out for hazards as you move. 'Lil also listens in, and wonders what will try to kill her next.

Xel'Aw tries to recall Mime 101 from Bard Camp last summer, but isn't sure that he was paying enough attention. He asks about some unlikely scenarios, earning a cool stare from Thich.

Bigby and Wolfgang do some hunting, bringing back some more prairie pigs and a bad mime joke. Grindar helps with the hunting.

Haemir nods as Thich reiterates his point about the monks' chant, then offers to trade spells with Sol when the time arises. Sol agrees to such sharing.

Caelwyn takes up a defensive position at the rear of the party, alongside 'Lil, who readies Ramona. Grindar joins the line as well, muttering "What next?" Xel'Aw
gives Resistance to Bigby and starts thinking of what rhymes with grass. Sol stops quaking long enough to mage armour up.

Fand flies up and starts to head back down your backtrail, while Wolfgang sniffs the air. The approaching creature(s) is downwind, however, so he scents nothing. Suddenly, Fand squawks, "It comes!" just before an unearthly scream tears through the grass.

(The scream is quite rattling, and everyone except Fand must make a DC12 WILL save or be stunned. If you fail the save, roll a d4 and report the result in your post. Bigby, don't forget your Resistance bonus from Xel'Aw's timely spell. A stunned creature drops everything held, can't take actions, takes a –2 penalty to AC, and loses its Dexteritybonus to AC (if any).)

Thich covers his ears and staggers, clearly stunned. You still can't see the thing, it must be out there in the grass somewhere. Even Fand only knows its general location, because the grass is too tall and thick to see down into. He can try to fly in closer for a look, or remain above to track its general location.

Caelwyn, not easily intimidated after years fighting a variety of foes, shakes off the shriek fairly quickly. Unable to see the enemy, he decides the best thing to do is draw it out so it will stop screaming at them. If they can see it, they can kill it. "When it comes at me, go for the kill" he murmurs to his comrades. (Will save 18)

He walks toward the source of the noise about 20 feet, shield raised, trident at the ready. "Come and get me" he mutters, his eyes watching the grass for any sign of movement. (Perception 15)

As Caelwyn tells the party his plan Haemir steps up behind him and mutters a few archaic phrases and touches the Paladins shoulder. A shimmering, magical field appears around him (granting Caelwyn a +2 deflection bonus to his AC for 1 minute).

"Whatever it is Fand is flying roughly above it. Hopefully Xel'Aw, one of your poems will prevent that sonic scream from doing anything"?! He says gripping his xbow once more.

Xel'Aw barely manages to avoid collapsing in himself at the noise. It is so overpowering, he presumes its effects must be magics. So he lets out a shrieking song himself, a noise composed of words in a hundred different languages, or one truly terrible cacophonous song, or poem... he doesn't sing so far as he recalls being on the Plains. The vibrations and frequencies, cadence are meant in direct contrast with the howl.

If the song is not magical, perhaps I'll spend a hero point to make it work even on a non-magic song?

Countersong (Su):...Any creature within 30 feet of the bard (including the bard himself) that is affected by a sonic or language-dependent magical attack may use the bard’s Perform check result in place of its saving throw if, after the saving throw is rolled, the Perform check result proves to be higher...

Xel’Aw digs deep, and bursts forth with a counter-howl of his own, freeing those who had been stunned from their plight! Those so afflicted may act next round. (Xel’Aw spends one hero point, which gives a flat +4 bonus)

Caelwyn steps out front, and smiles when receives a defensive boon from Haemir. ‘Lil steps up and readies her hammer as well, while Bigby looks to charge when able.

Sol readies a hand of the apprentice attack.

Fans gives a squawk just as a creature that seems like a cross between a horse and a raptor bursts from the grass with a roar. Sol recognizes this beast, it is a rapke, a poisonous, evil beast native to the Sargrass; Sol’s attack goes wide. ‘Lil also misses as the thing rushes up. Bigby’s charge is unsuccessful, but Wolfgang gets in a nip for 6hp of damage (no trip, though.) Fand is still squawking and flying around your left flank, but you need to make a dc20 perception check to try to hear it over the din of battle.

The beast rips into Caelwyn despite Haemir’s spell, doing 20 hp of damage. Caelwyn feels venom coursing through his veins. (Make a dc12 Fort Dave or take 7 points of Dex damage)

'Lil kicks Caelwyn a bit. "Stop being so dramatic, dude. Get up and kill this thing!" She realizes she can't possibly out heal the damage this thing is capable of. Even if she heals Caelwyn as much as she possibly could, one more hit like that would still kill him.

So instead, she pounds the heck out of the ground next to the thing (Hit AC 6).

Shaking his head, Caelwyn realizes that he has been knocked backwards a bit, but is still conscious. He can feel that his injuries are serious, and prays that Domi might allow him to fight well to protect his companions. His head ringing from the rapke's attack, he grits his teeth and steps forward to stab at the creature's body with his trident. The beast is lightening quick, however, and manages to dodge to one side.

Caelwyn swoons for a moment after taking such a big hit and being poisoned, but snaps to consciousness with a start when kicked by 'Lil. He tries to smite with his trident, but it fails to connect. Xel'Aw moves up to heal Caelwyn for 10hp!

Haemir suspects that there might be another of these things out there, but drops an ill omen on the one that he can see.

Grindar is saved from his stupor by Xel'Aw's countersong, but seems to still be sluggish as he lashes out with a staff, missing the rapke.

Bigby and Wolfgang start to crabwalk around the beast, while continuing their furious assault. They should be able to create a flank next round, unless something changes. Wolfgang strikes it for another 2hp of damage, but again fails to trip the wily creature.

Sol adds to the attack by unleashing a magic missile that unerringly strike the rapke or another 3hp of damage.

'Lil continues to store up karma for a mighty future blow that will lay low a fell foe, but for the moment hits nothing but air with Ramona.

The monster seems undeterred by the blows that it has suffered so far, and continues its attacks. It seems to have been fooled by Caelwyn's swoon, and turns its attention to Grindar, who looks like a big threat. Miraculously, its venomous bite misses, thanks to the ill omen that Haemir placed on it! It does manage to land one claw attack, dealing 8hp of damage to Grindar.

It seems to have a lot of fight left in it, how about you?

Inspire Courage - From the Paizo Bard page A 1st-level bard can use his performance to inspire courage in his allies (including himself), bolstering them against fear and improving their combat abilities. To be affected, an ally must be able to perceive the bard's performance. An affected ally receives a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls. At 5th level, and every six bard levels thereafter, this bonus increases by +1, to a maximum of +4 at 17th level. Inspire courage is a mind-affecting ability. Inspire courage can use audible or visual components. The bard must choose which component to use when starting his performance.

Sol attempts to daze the creature, but then realizes too late that the spell only affects humanoids. (OOC The DM actually rolled the save, but then remembered that fact too.) He sees no way to escape this fight, given the creature's high speed and the difficulty you have moving through the grass.

Bigby and Wolfgang move around to flank the creature, providing flanking bonuses to Grindar and 'Lil. Bigby also scores two hits, doing a total of 9 damage to the rapke.

'Lil scores a good hit, although it slithers aside just enough to avoid getting completely brained by Ramona (no crit). It takes 8hp of damage.

Haemir wonders if you are being flanked, but has lost track of Fand above the grass. His storm blast hits the rapke, doing 6hp of damage and distracting its attacks a bit.

Grindar takes his lumps stoically, and takes his own swings, but the thing's thick hide deflects the blows.

Xel'Aw waxes poetic again, aiding his comrades in arms with some inspiration of courage.

Domi only knows what Caelwyn is doing, he seems frozen in place.

Fand suddenly bursts from the grass in the direction that the party had originally been heading, and now you can hear him clearly, "Two, two, two of them now!" But the warning is a bit late, as a second rapke bursts from the grass emitting another hideous shriek. (Everyone except Fand please make a DC12 WILL save. If you fail, roll a d4 to see how many rounds you are stunned for.)

At least the first one is looking pretty injured…

Xel'Aw catches sight of it and mutters under the poem, "You had to be right, Haemir, ugh."

This time he anticipates it, resisting the urge to just stand there. Better get Caelwyn all the way up...

He makes another casting of Cure Light Wounds but it isn't nearly as powerful.

Haemir focuses on the new arrival - it's sonic shriek washes over him (Sv:23) and he grits his jaw firing his xbow at it in response (Attack:23 if it's under 30' or 22 if over - for 3 (+1 if under 30') dmg).

Fand flies (move 80') to the creature the party is attacking and flaps around distracting it (attacking to aid another - attack:13 which hits ac:10 - granting +2 to hit to - will leave it to the refs discretion as Fand is being frantic).

Bigby almost feels stunned by the monsters shriek, but he quickly strengthen his resolve. "must continue to fight. Can't let the pack down." Bigby attacks the creature again with two attacks (16, 21. ooc forgot to add flank bonus, but still miss). Wolfgang attempts to bite the creature (24, dmg 4, trip: 23). Bigby will attempt to use his movement to use mounted combat to dodge any one attack against Wolfgang (16).

Caelwyn feels his body strengthened by the healing energy from his companions and his eyes narrow as he stares at the injured rapke. Better to kill this one first and not have two to worry about... He ignores the second beast entirely, brushing off its screech attack, and attacks the first one with his trident. Unfortunately, despite its injuries, the creature is able to limp away from Caelwyn's attack.

Xel'Aw shrugs off the latest shriek, but seems to grumpily put of the blame for its arrival on Haemir. Nevertheless, he heals Caelwyn for another 4hp of damage.

Haemir for his part steels himself against the shriek and looses a crossbow bolt into the newcomer, srtiking for 4hp of damage.

Grindar continues his twirling sticks of death, bashing the first rapke for 7hp of damage. 'Lil tries to add to the carnage, but is thrown off by the shriek.

Caelwyn comes out of his stupor and attempts to attack the first rapke, but it doesn't work out as planned.

Bigby is nearly overcome but the shriek, but manages to gather his wits and continue the fight. One of his claws unexpectedly hits for 5hp of damage, as Fand distracts the creature just enough to get a slash in! Wolfgang bites it for 4hp, but can't seem trip it up—it's big, strong, and fast! It turns out it doesn't matter, because the thing falls over on its own, collapsing in a quivering heap of poisonous, dead fury.

Not a moment too soon, as the second rapke falls upon the squishies, and starts to wreak havoc. It seems very angry about Xel'Aw's poetry, and tries to bite him, dealing 17hp of damage, knocking him immediately unconscious and bleeding. (Xel'Aw please make a DC12 FORT save or also take 6hp of DEX damage.) It turns its claws on Haemir, doing a total of 15hp of damage, leaving him bleeding on the ground as well.

Two of you are down, and it is barely scratched. Can you turn things around, or will this be the end?

"THAT TEARS IT!" shouts 'Lil as her friends start dropping. She wheels to face the wounded rapke and just pounds the stuffing out of it.

Caelwyn's eyes blaze as he turns upon the second rapke. The points of his trident seem to glow as he unleashes a deadly attack, attempting to smite this foul thing with the holy power of his god.

As Haemir was aiming at the first Rapke he catches a glimpse ofthe second one out of the corner of his eye - the armour plating looks redicliously hard on these creatures and between that and the fact that 'There are too many people in the way' he thinks - his hand wavers.

He quickly concludes that firing at the newer Rapke may evoke its wrath, but that might be the best way forward. 'It's a clear shot and if it consequently comes for me ... it's not coming for one of them...' At the last second he switches targets and fires at the new one.

A look of surprise (as the bolt actually hits) turns to horror as it ignores it and bites Xel'Aw. In a blur it is also on him too and and as time slows down he watches as it's claws rake across his chest. The pendant around his chest flies in to the grass and he falls back - landing in a heap. Everything fades to darkness.

Fand meanwhile switches targets to the new Rapke and in a renzy of attacks (flanking?) misses (highest:21)

Bigby lets out a primal howl in response to both of his friends falling. "let's beat back this beast!" Bigby and Wolfgang crab walk around to get into flanking again. And then Bigby attacks (26, 26 -2 if no flanking, dmg: 4, 4). Wolfgang lets out a howl in response to Wolfgangs howl and makes his bite attack at the beast (14). (21 for mounted combat. Use of Bigby's move to dodge for Wolfgang if he gets attacked).

Xel'Aw goes down, thinking "no, not again" as his precious lifeblood seeps into the grass.

Haemir also fades to black as the claws rip across his chest. Fand swoops in to defend him, but can't quite score a hit.

'Lil moves to the new intruder and after windmilling once catches the thing on the second twirl around, smashing it with Ramona for 10hp of damage.

Caelwyn also seems inspired, by both 'Lil and Domi, getting well ahead of himself and smiting the rapke for 14hp of damage.

Bigby and Wolfgang come around to flank the foe, with Bigby striking it twice for a total of 8hp of damage.

Grindar fails to hit the thing, even with the benefits of his flanking comrades.

Sol shakes himself alert, and hits the beast with a Ray of Frost for 3 hp of damage.

The rapke snarls at the party surrounding him, but does not seem cowed. It bites at Bigby, hitting for 11 hp of damage (and make that DC12 FORT save or take 4 DEX damage.) It claws at Wolfgang, striking a critical blow for 12hp of damage. Its other claw sweeps out at Caelwyn, raking him for another 8hp of damage. It roars in triumph as your blood and gore drip from its fangs and claws. Is this your last day in the Sargrass?

Xel'Aw's body bleeds on the ground a bit more. It isn't an uncommon event, the death of a creature on the Sargrass Plain. His body shall become food for the insects. His gear might be found later, or eaten, it isn't impossible to say. I'm probably more of a liability to the party than help anyway... This could be for the best...

Caelwyn shimmers with holy light as his trident slams home, for 8hp of damage. 'Lil keeps him going with another 9hp of healing.

Bigby and Wolfgang are determined to go down fighting together, but struggle to land a blow right now, even with a distraction provided by Fand.

Sol hits the beast with another ray of frost, doing 2hp of damage. Grindar just can't seem to get into a fighting rhythm with this thing, and misses wildly again.

Haemir continues to bleed into the grass. Xel'Aw wallows in a pool of misery mixed with his own blood, doubt creeping into his mind as in his mind, Gargul extends a hand to him. Probably just a hallucination, right?

The rapke is looking significantly weaker, and with a pain-filled growl, it turns and slinks off into the grass at high speed. (Full withdrawal at speed 50' x2)

You can get off one ranged attack if you have such a weapon in hand or spell available. Otherwise it is quickly gone from your sight unless you try to pursue it through its native grass, which is difficult terrain for you…

As the rapke retreats, Grindar quickly draws a javelin from his back and hurls it at the retreating beast, but of course it simply glances of it's natural armor. in frustration, he retrieves his javelin and Cyrchwr Mawr. Then he turns to Lil and asks, "Can you do anything for our friends, or are they with Gargul now?"

Bigby feels tempted to let out his revenge on the beast. if only Wolfgang could move through the grass as I could. Then we could make this beast pay for the pain it's caused upon the pack. Xel'Aw's bleeding stops, and the channelling pours over his body, but the guy was in really rough shape and doesn't immediately wake up though it would appear the worst of the damage is healed. He was close, I could just rest forever... Ah, to sleep, perchance to dream... what dreams may come...

After a mnute or so, he finally wakes, he makes to stand but falls again, "Oh no, I'm going to fall..." he says moments after having already fallen. [b]"I feel woozy, I don't think I can stand..."[/b} he says as he has already risen to his feet and shakily stands.

Haemir groans and sits up. As the additional channels (all three) kick in he stretches and surveys the area... "What.. who? Oh Sol. Yes I feel much better thanks". Slowly he gets to his feet and seeing Lil channeling nods a thanks. "Where did it go"? Then hearing it in the grass he nods in the general direction. Fand swoops in and lands in his shoulder. They both sigh in relief.

Caelwyn is not about to let the rapke get away, and hurls his trident at its retreating back, hitting for 10hp of damage and eliciting a whimper from the evil beastie. Grindar follows up with a javelin, but it bounces harmlessly off its thick hide. Sol hits it with one last Ray of Frost, and it goes down in an icy heap just before it would have made it to safety.

Bigby wishes he could pursue it, but decides it would be better to heal his friends. He is wildly successful, stabilizing both of them and adding some healing as well. (OOC: Those healed please roll for hp regained from the CLW spell, since Michael was having trouble with the dice roller.)

'Lil adds to the positive healing vibe with several channels of divine energy.

Xel'Aw is pulled back from near death, but awakens confused and out of synch with his surroundings. He eventually manages to stand woozily, but seems like he will recover, given all the help he is getting from his friends.

Haemir sits up with a groan, and thanks all and sundry, before looking around for the rapkes. Fand seems relieved, but who can tell with an expressionless bird?

You have survived the onslaught, despite the long odds! You are able to retrieve your various weapons strewn across the battlefield. Do you carry on?

Bigby moves ahead to do some scouting, hoping Grindar will come join with him up front. He is a ranger afterall. I wonder what it would be like to become a ranger. "Yes, let's get out of here," Xel'Aw says - he grabs his bag and takes a couple steps, but bag is seems extra heavy or Xel' is extra uncoordinated because the weight pulls him off balance and he stubs his toe catching it. "No real harm done, shall we..." yet he now has a slight limp as he progresses and seems to be extra cautious of his foot.

Grindar rushes to Xel'Aw's aid and agrees with 'Lil that this place is trying to kill you. 'Lil says "duh" and starts rounding you up to move out.

Sol is ready to go, and offers his staff as support for Haemir, after suggesting plundering the corpses for useful bits. You are able to trim off some fur, fangs, claws, and scales, but are not sure whether you will find much use for them yet. Will still be interesting to study!

Bigby agrees to move on and scouts ahead. In response to Sol's explorations, he wonders whether you could eat the thing. Thich isn't sure.

Haemir is feeling dandy, and doesn't need Sol's staff at the moment. "Let's go"

Caelwyn claps Sol on the back, nearly staggering him with bonhomie. He offers a prayer to Domi as you move out.

Xel'Aw agrees it is time to get out of here. He's a little clumsier than usual, as are some others in the party who haven't shrugged off the effects of the poison yet.

You move off into the grass again, moving ever closer to the looming mountains.

As evening comes, you see a strange collection of bulbous-based grasses up ahead, six of the plants arranged in a neat circle. Thich exclaims, "Oh, this is a stroke of luck. Bulbgrass! We can use this for some very nice shelter, and many of the creatures of the Sargrass are repelled by the smell of them, so it should make for a safer camp! As you get closer however, you can see that there are several humanoid skeletons strewn around the perimeter of the bulbgrass. They are not moving, and seem to have been here for quite some time, based on their condition and the growth of grass through them.

Grindar takes his normal place at the lead alongside Bigby and Wolfgang. Upon seeing the skeletons, he comments to Thich, "Safer you say?". "Well, If we are going to die tonight, let's get it over with!" He says as he heads to the bulbgrass. (percption 8) Apparently Grindar is too distracted by the sense of doom he feels to pay much attention.

Sol watches, and sees if notices anything particularly magical about the skeletons.

Caelwyn immediately casts Detect Evil on the skeletons and surrounding foliage, trying to discern any potential danger. He is skeptical it will yield results - it seems more likely that a creature of some sort has been at work - but better safe than sorry. His trident and shield are at the ready just in case, and he scans the area for danger.

Grindar leads the way toward the bulbgrass with a fatalistic attitude. 'Lil is not impressed by his devil-may-care 'tude and calls for some paladin do-badder vision. Caelwyn obliges with a few scans of the area, but detects nothing amiss.

Sol scans the area with a discerning eye and concludes that whoever these folks were, they probably died by getting eaten, and it wasn't recently at all. The bones are sun-bleached and there is no flesh at all on the skellies.

Bigby has Wolfgang sniff around, but he scents nothing of danger. Haemir scans for magic, and detects a plethora of auras mixed in among the skeletons. Xel'Aw does the same, and between the two of them they determine that there are numerous objects with differing auras in the area. Enchantment, conjuration, evocation, and illusion, none too powerful, but more than you've ever seen in one place at one time.

As you move closer, you can see that most of their gear is rotted or rusted away, but mixed in the remains, you can see some vials, a cloak that is in excellent condition, a couple of thin wands, and a wood and steel rod which is also in good shape. These items are the source of the auras. There are also some colored sparklies in the grass, possibly spilled from rotted belt pouches.

Riches await, held from your grasp only by a healthy sense of paranoia. Is this the only place in the Sargrass not trying to kill you?
