DM Mitch Saturday April 27th, 2019 2:04:41 PM Restlin starts prepping for battle.
Garret verifies they have a way back from where they are going.
Zane asks when they’ve ever worried about getting back before.
Beri reminds the others about the backpack and lets them know that wildshaping has become easier for him with practice.
Tink sends off her letter and asks if the portal will be sealed behind them and how they can alert the Caretaker when they’re done.
Bosk wonders if word of recall or teleport will work.
Sesha says she can buff Tink’s shield and asks if anyone wants a weapon buff.
The Caretaker replies to Tink’s questions, ”I will seal the portal behind you and monitor it; should it become stable, I shall unseal it. Should the seal fail, I will assume you are dead and destroy the portal to protect reality. Should you somehow survive and succeed after I am forced to destroy it the machine provided by your ally should provide you with a way back.”
Rested, with new gear and a tight timeframe, the party enters the portal. A swirl of strange light and vague visions flashes before their eyes before they’re dumped in a small clearing. The first impression they get is that everything is to bright. The grass is too green, the tree bark too brown, the metal of their armor to silver. It’s like some artist added an extra, brighter layer of paint to everything.
A portal, like the one in the tower, sits in behind them. It is dark and inactive. They’re in some small forrest, the trees fully grown but not the ancient giants of a thick forest. The clearing they stand is is near the edge of the wood, and a small village can been seen in the distance below, probably a few hours walk away.

Tink takes a moment to get her bearings and get a better idea of where they are.
She takes a look around for some tracks on the ground to indicate what creatures may have been around here to use the portal and what direction they came from.
Assuming it is the village, Tink will take point and fly around 30ft ahead of the rest of the party.

The parties various detection spells reveal nothing. Tink can find no signs of any creatures walking up to the portal, though some wild animals have been in the clearing. Other than the odd coloring of everything, which seems to just be part of the nature of this reality, this seems to be a completely normal forest. The party approaches the village and as they get close it becomes more and more evident that it’s seen hard times. Buildings are damaged, the ground torn up in places, and a makeshift barricade of cards has been put across the road. There are no occupants in sight, but the ruffling of window curtains and the click of a latch indicates the residents are around, but hiding from you.
A figure jumps out from behind one of the carts to the top of the makeshift barricade. It’s about Garret’s size and looks like a stuffed goat in a chain shirt. It points a blade of raw energy at the party. ”Back, fowl otherworldly creatures! I will let no further harm come to this village!”

Zane asks for the others to let the villagers know he is flying overhead so they don’t think he’s a bad guy.
Wyaar relays Zane’s message and spends a little healing energy on the villagers
Tink has nothing to add so she listens to what the villagers have to say. She tries to get a read on them. The villagers seem to be exactly what you’d expect; open, honest village folk out of their depths and scared. Toreal, the goat, seems calm, cold, and calculating. He’s clearly picking his words carefully and probably does not trust you. He does not seem to be lying to you.
Garret is not used to being the tall one and sits down to look less threatening. He asks what the devourer spawn look like and how would one go about defeating them.
Sesha also keeps quiet, thinking about how something is off about the villagers and how strange their path has been lately.
Bosk starts mentioning his collection of potent potables and asks if the Rabbit has anything to trade in exchange for herbs, spices and rations.
Wabbit says to Bosk, “Well...let me check what I have in store. We have a large number of huney bees and Weingart sometimes disguises himself as a raincloud in order to harvest some honey. We tend to make a mead with the huney. I think we still have a pot or two lying around.” Wabbit walks into what is left of his house and comes out with 2 jars marked huney mead.
Weingart says to Wabbit, “After those jars, is there anymore?”

Beri looks over the group. The villagers are unclothed, except for a red t-shirt on the bear, and unarmed. Toreal is heavily armored and armored, at least as well as anyone in the party if not moreso, and seeming to be setup for dual wield sword fighting. There’s no easy way to tell how heavily enchanted the gear is, though at least some of it is judging by the brilliant energy blade he was waving about a moment ago.
Toreal answers the parties questions. Legend says that centuries ago the Devourer came. It was an monster from another realm that fed on the very fabric of reality, and many planes of existence had been consumed by it. Something about ours defied it so that it could not destroy us in an instant, allowing a group of great heroes to gather and seal its power, locking it into a small, weak form. Now it’s prison is leaking, and it’s evil takes the form of chaotic, twisted monsters. I have devoted my life to destroying it’s minions and it and have learned the many forms and their weaknesses.”
Tink, still trying to get a read on the goat, senses that he’s not telling the whole truth as to why he’s been fighting the things.

Garret agrees over the rings that Toreal bears watching.
Zane asks if the villagers are more constructs
Beri asks more information of Toreal regarding the terrain on the way to the world prison
Tink requests information on the creatures weaknesses.
Garret eyes the mountains and tries to judge the distance.
The mountains are relatively close it looks like. On foot it would take the advertised 2 or 3 days to reach them, but of course the party’s magic speeds things up to the point where they can reach them in a day.
During the trip Toreal regals the stories of the many strange creatures that pour out of the devourer’s prison. You recognize the puppybabymonkey’s as the tiny creatures that came through the portal and attempted to force everyone to dance. ”Harmless alone, incredibly dangerous in large groups. Fortunately they have an addition to alcohol that trumps everything else. Throw a bottle or casks at them, then pick them off.” He describes the bird-women things as among the worst of the creatures. Impossible to put down unless you catch their bush. Mostly people just destroy any hedges within 300 yards of civilization or commonly used roads. For all the demoness’s ferocity, the bushes themselves are incredibly timid and won’t approach anyplace they can’t flee with their teleportation magic.”
The other creatures described are too numerous to count. He claims to have fought dozens of different creatures, and isn’t entirely confident he’s seen all the possibilities. ”Be ready for anything; it may create something even I haven’t seen.”
In additions to stories of improbable monsters the party has the scenery to distract them during the trip. This realm, whatever it is, seems remarkably inconsistent in how things look. The village was bright and simple looking, but they pass through an area that looks like it was assembled entirely with foot by foot blocks, including trees and plants that are pixelated and blocky. The foothills lose the blocky look are currently experiencing a bought of rain, but the rain falls in big blue dots instead of the normal clear raindrops of the Wold. In the lower mountain area forrest takes over, thick and dark, seemingly absorbing nothing but greys, blacks, and blues to contrast the previous bright, happy look of everything.
None of these changes affect the appearance of the party, who still look like themselves just brighter. Eventually, late in the evening, Toreal calls for a stop. ”We’re mere hours away now. Best we sleep and fight the thing at full strength in the light of day.” he seems to be in a much better mood after the fast day’s travel; perhaps he’d answer questions now?

I would never have guessed that, must be their youthful appearance that hides it. As they start to wind down for the night, Beri looks down at the changing terrain that marks the last leg of the journey.

It would be best to know how he plans to attack and defend himself in combat should the party need to come to his aid. She looks over all of his items to see their magical auras, and will also concentrate on Toreal himself. She checks him for the auras of any magical active spell effects.
Spellcraft checks: 32+Take10=42 Knowl Arcana checks: 24+Take10=34 Arcane Sight: "You know the location and power of all magical auras within your sight. An aura's power depends on a spell's functioning level or an item's caster level, as noted in the description of the detect magic spell. If the items or creatures bearing the auras are in line of sight, you can make Spellcraft skill checks to determine the school of magic involved in each. (Make one check per aura; DC 15 + spell level, or 15 + half caster level for a nonspell effect.)
If you concentrate on a specific creature within 120 feet of you as a standard action, you can determine whether it has any spellcasting or spell-like abilities, whether these are arcane or divine (spell-like abilities register as arcane), and the strength of the most powerful spell or spell-like ability the creature currently has available for use."

”It’s less of a prison and more of a random cave where it was defeated long ago. Legend says it found crystals there that would let it consume the world from that one location and it was only barely stopped in time. Since then it’s just sat there, leaking out it’s foul spawn.”

As someone we have known less than a day I'm sure you can understand my caution, even paranoia, about being deceived again.
There are also some who believe they are doing the right thing however have been mislead by the one you call the devourer, impersonating another powerful being. For that reason understanding someones motives can be quite important" Tink lays it out on the table
"I can tell you have some sort of protection up to stop me from discerning any information about you. I have the same. As an act of trust I suggest we both reveal ourselves. If we are to fight against such a terrible creature we need to know who it is we stand beside. What do you say? I'm prepared to show who I am."
If Toreal agrees to the proposal, Tink will not immediately recast her Mind Blank spell in the morning. She will give Toreal some time to see her magical auras.
Tink will keep an eye on Toreal when it comes time to morning prep. It will be much simpler to find out what defensive spells he puts in place when she can actually see them being cast. While she rests she will ask one of the others to keep an eye on him for the same reason.

Not all of us though. This means that - as a group - we can already be discovered.
I also have a detect scrying spell active and can tell you that noone is currently scrying this area, nor has scryed on us since we arrived. The chances of them scrying on you during those specific few seconds would be incredibly remote. Perhaps 1 in 10,000? 20,000?
Still, if you are concerned, we are about to rest. Restlin will conjure a Magnificent Mansion spell which opens to another plane. Even if they could scry on you they would have no way of detecting how we got there, no way of knowing where the Magnificent Mansion spell was cast and no way of knowing our current location on this place. We would be entirely and perfectly safe. How does that sound?"
Tink then speaks to the others via the rings "When we first met him I could tell he wasn't telling us the whole truth and he hasn't done anything to win my trust since. How did he think he could do this alone? Had he been waiting in the village for help to arrive? Why stay near civilians and potentially endanger them too? Was one of them family? Look, I may be paranoid, but with stakes as high as they are now we need to know who we can trust. Does anyone have any divination or commune type spells handy?"
"I'm sorry about this, but Tink has a point. I've given Agatha a pass, but I don't really know anything about you. Prying is rude, and I know people have their secrets. I'm going to need to know yours."
Sesha starts gathering a bit of arcane power. She had three spells to cast, two of which were high level magics.
"This spell is a bit difficult, but it will last for awhile. It's called Screen, and anyone peeking sees only what I want them to see here for the next 24 hours. It's a potent scry defense, as the scryer literally cannot defeat the effect."
Sesha concentrates hard on her vision.
IF someone was suddenly alerted to scry here, it would be because of a trigger. Showing them a gentle slope with nothing around would alarm them as much as seeing the party, so she instead sets an image of a pair of resting golden dragons, as cartoonish as she can make them, feeding young and resting.
That's a strong enough creature that it might prickle someones senses, but not so strange that someone would want to pry further, she thought. It would also further hide Restlins mansion spell. Sesha explains all this out loud to everyone present.
She then, quite dismissive of Toreals privacy, she dispels his amulets effects, after raising her spell power as much as she can.
(Dispel check = 41. Sesha can raise her caster level to 32. Base 20 + 4 Prayer Beads + 5 Surrender Blood, + 2 Vestments + 1 Ioun Stone)
His amulet, as he advertised it, is inert for 3 rounds. More than enough time for her to pry and Zane to snoop out his alignment.
Her final spell, is the 7th level spell, Visions. She asks with her spell. "Who is Toreal, and what are his motivations?"
This spell functions like legend lore, except that it works more quickly and produces some strain on you. You pose a question about some person, place, or object, then cast the spell. If the person or object is at hand or if you are in the place in question, you receive a vision about it by succeeding on a caster level check (1d20 + 1 per caster level; maximum +25) against DC 20. If only detailed information on the person, place, or object is known, the DC is 25, and the information gained is incomplete. If only rumors are known, the DC is 30, and the information gained is vague. After this spell is complete, you are fatigued.
Sesha cannot fail the caster level check, since Toreal is right here. She is fatigued.

All of Tink's checks remain the same.

Sesha decides to just dispel him and scry him without his permission.
Zane casts Haste and goes dragon in case a fight starts.
Garret is impressed by Sesha’s magical skill.
Restlin disapproves, but notes the guy is wary of Wyarr.
Wyarr casts detect evil. And man, he is so evil. At least matching any single member of the party in skill, and molovent to a degree he’s rarely felt. A sheer hatred of all of reality and it’s creatures.practically floes out of this guy.
Beri also gets the hint this might go south and prepares.
Bosk is ready to go invisible if Toreal gets violent.
Sesha is thrown into a vision. A great, empty void. Pinpricks of light, crystals, floating in the nothingness. A great beast, terrible beyond belief, floating there. A small party, standing against the darkness.
One of them charges, screaming in defiance. A lion warrior, judging from his armor, but his stuffed body is faded and shrunken. WIth a gesture from the great beast the warrior falls away into dust, a glowing orb drawn out of him and into the creature, his very soul consumed by the Devourer.
Two stand, all that’s left of a once great team of heroes, both desiccated and falling apart.. One, a fox, turns to the other and mutters a spell. The other, a relatively tall doe, is revitalized at the last moment before her friend falls. With a shout of despair she dives at the fading soul of her friend as it is pulled away. Remarkably, she somehow catches it and holds it inside of herself, sparing it momentarily from oblivion.
”We cannot beat it.” the doe says, despairing. The Devourer seems to agree - it ignores them, turning to the crystals. With a wave of it’s hand one of the lights fades and dies, a stream of screaming souls emerging from it into the thing. It laughs, reveling in it’s victory.
”No… says the soul of the fox. ”But perhaps we can sever it from it’s power. It’s power remains here, but it sends it’s essence through the crystals to consume our reality. If we strike as it reaches through we can cut it off from it’s power, render it helpless.”
It was a complicated spell, and every moment left the Doe weaker. More crystals were consumed and as they worked all of their energies into the most powerful sealing spell possible, more lives were lost. It probably took less than a minute, but it seemed an eternity and the Doe was brought to her knees as her life energies were either stolen away or worked into the spell. With a final shriek of defiance the pair expended everything they had, everything they were, at the exact moment the Devourer consumed yet another city on the other side of the realm.
It’s great form compresses, shrank, forced down into something small and weak. Something that looked like a mix of man, bear, and pig. Full of power and molevence, but with no will to direct it, it sat there, rising only to slaughter those foolish enough to enter it’s cave, adorning itself with the weapons and armor of those that fell to it. Slowly, over time, it began to leak, a black, viscous goo that formed into wild, unpredictable monsters that went out and destroyed everything they found.
And in a distant town, spared the last second by the doe’s sacrifice, a small stuffed goat suddenly fell into existence. The weak, frail construct fell to it’s knees and screamed it’s rage at the heavens, bereft of the reality consuming power that was all it had known for eons. Minutes later, it’s rage spent, the goat stood up. Clenching his fists, Toreal swore that he would regain his power. He may be a small, frail creature, but he was still a construct, immortal unless killed, and no matter how many centuries it took he would master his mortal form and reclaim his rightful place in the cosmos as the Devourer. He would consume this pitiful reality that dared defeat him.
Back in the real world, the current Toreal realizes the jig is up. With a snarl, he jumps up from the log he’s sitting on and vanishes.

"So...this is...half the Devourer? It's looking to reunite with this bear pig to become itself again and start eating souls? I say we don't let that happen."
Restlin's guessing he and his companions could just beat the stuffing out of the little goat monster, but would that even do the trick?
"Our tower. We throw him in with all our other evil, unrecoverable artifacts. If killing this little goat thing was easy and would solve the problem, those animal hero things...geez other dimensions are weird...would have done it. Or, maybe it gets cloned a bunch of times and busts out."
Restlin puts his considerable arcane knowledge to the task of figuring this out.
Knowledge, Arcana: 61.
Can this goat thing be killed? If so, would that solve the problem and end the Devourer threat? Would the goat-soul just merge back up with the man-bear-pig soul? How viable a solution is imprisoning goat boy here with the rest of the Iron Dragon's evil artifact collection?
If you wants, I can make additional know, arcana rolls.
"I don't think it's enough. He's a construct. He might just pass his consciousness somewhere else. And there's the problem of Man-bear-pig. It's still eating people that come unwittingly."
Sesha glances about, but Bosk gives her some inspiration.
"Doesn't Gargul have a sect that strictly handles constructs? If we can stop .. pig thing.. with the goat and it's soul accounted for, we might stop any chance of a reunification."
She considers Toreal once more.
"If not, I might have some options. Witches are well suited to sealing up big threats. I have both Imprisonment and Temporal Stasis among the spells I know, and either of those can seal him away for good. Or for a long long time."

He must have felt something good while protecting them. If we can get him to touch that feeling full time... I don't know, I guess I just want to see the good the people. And I use that term very loosely." Dragon Zane's face gets a wry smile on his face....To himself, Zane is thinking, since we became the Iron Dragons, I've obviously changed. DM Mitch d20+33=43 ; Wednesday May 15th, 2019 8:50:26 PM Bosk waits to figure out what is going on with the goat man.
Sesha sighs and then explains the results of her spell
Tink is surprised at this revelation and wonders in dismay if Agatha somehow helped them.
Bosk prepares to attack.
Restlin wonders if killing or imprisoning Toreal would work and applies his vast arcane knowledge to the situation.
Sesha is doubtful, wonders about Gargul’s servants who work to destroy constructs, and says maybe they can stop reunification by killing the manbearpig. If they need to imprison Toreal she has spells that can do so.
Garret gets nervous when hearing the goat might eat his soul.
Wyarr states they shouldn’t trust anything he says and offers to render him unconscious
Zane wonders if Toreal can be redeemed.
As Restlin considers the problem he finds he can come to no clear conclusions. There are just too many unknown variables. What was the spell that sealed him? Was it divine or arcane in nature? For that matter, this is a different reality. How are the underpinnings of reality and magic different here? Similar enough they’ve had no problems casting, but that other reality had tech that didn’t work in the Wold. Spells might be possible here that are nothing like anything he’s experienced before.
Why was Toreal a construct? Was it a form crafted to imprison his spirit? If so killing him might just let him rejoin his sealed power. Or was he just trapped in a mortal form? All the intelligent life here seems to be what would be considered a construct back home. Killing him might just damn him to whatever hell analog they have here.
What was the manbearpig? The seal on the Devourer’s power? If so, killing it would free it and cause it to reunite with Toreal. Or blow up the entire mountain chain. Or was it just the manifested form of the power? In which case killing it might destroy the Devourer’s power forever.
There are a few things he can be sure of. If Toreal could claim the power by just walking into the cave he would have done so long before now. He also came along with the group instead of just pointing them at the Manbearpig and waiting for his power to return, so proximity might be relevant.
Toreal scoffs at the group, interrupting the train of thought. ”You’ve learned much of me it seems, yet you fail to grasp the full extent of what I was. Devouring souls? Child’s play. Reality itself withered before me, and I feasted upon the very planes of existence. Untold dimensions fell before me until this pitiful one somehow baulked my power.
Arrogance, hatred, and molovance drip from his every word. ”So go ahead, kill this pathetic form I’m trapped in or imprison me however you wish. Know that doing so you seal your own fate, for without my knowledge how to you expect to defeat the twisted horrors that spring from my prison?”

Restlin rolls his eyes. Maybe this little goat thing really is the most powerful foe the Iron Dragons have ever dealt with, but that doesn't mean he has to be an arrogant little jerk about it.
"I mean, you just said we couldn't hope to defeat that piggy bear without you, and in the very next breath you tell us our only hope is to run?" He gets a little closer and narrows his eyes. "You disappoint me, goat."
He turns back to the others. "If that's all it's got, let's find a way to lock him away forever. Sesha, do..." Restlin stops, realizing he's about to give Sesha an order. She doesn't take kindly to such things. "...I have no problem with you experimenting, especially if you can work out an imprisonment spell."
Yea, that was much better. Restlin carefully watches her do her thing, trying to pick up on anything her spell work reveals about magic in this reality.
Construct Traits: Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, morale effects, patterns, and phantasms).
Immunity to disease, death effects, necromancy effects, paralysis, poison, sleep effects, and stunning.
Not subject to ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, energy drain, or nonlethal damage. Immunity to any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects, or is harmless).
Sesha will try a few spells, starting with the things constructs are generally immune to. To test its resistance to mind-affecting effects, ability damage, and non-lethal damage, she casts a series of spells that check all of those things.
Sesha casts Ill Omen, Bestow Curse, and Pain Strike, which test against the above resistances typical to constructs.
"Im not testing his immunity to death magic.. because.. well.. if he isn't immune..", she lets the implication explain itself. Even she wasn't about to kill a captive.
She also tries a spell with a will save, that is not within the parameters of a normal immunity that constructs have. Scry. (Not enchantment, necromancy, stat reducing, a death effect or mind affecting.)
With the tests ran, she'll have a better idea of what magic might work for long term subduing of the creatures here.

I can just seal him away, right here and now, until someone who can discern both him and his location comes along with a Freedom spell. DM Mitch Monday May 20th, 2019 7:08:21 AM Tink lays out some constraints for Sesha regarding what she is comfortable with
Garret asks the others over the rings, if they leave the goat where does that put them. He reasons they either have to destroy the thing in the cave or find a way to seal the portal to this world.
Restlin points out the contradictions in what the Goat just says, informing it of his disappointment. He then instructs Sesha to find a way to imprison it.
Sesha tries some things.
Tink brings up the fact the goat is small and he could fit in her bag of holding
Beri asks if anyone knows how the transfer thing would work if the goat died and brings up some other options for dealing with him.
Bosk wants to contact Gimp
Toreal seems amused by Restlin’s reaction. ”Oh I would have helped you defeat the manbearpig to reclaim my power and devour you and this reality, but now that isn’t really an option is it?
He seems equally amused by Sesha’s tests and their insistence on not really hurting him. All of her tests seem to confirm he’s a fairly standard construct; he's immune to the things he should be immune to and vulnerable to the things that he should be vulnerable to.

The connection with Gimp is tenuous and Bosk can barely hear him. [b]”What? I ca- -ear you. You’re in- - lanes aren’t you? Look we trust you to- - get back.”[b]
It seems whatever alternate world your in makes direct communication hard, though divine magic is still working so there’s still some connection.
"Well.", says Sesha, assuming that Bosk shares Gimps non-reply.
"I'm going to seal it away. Then we should probably be okay killing or defeating man-bear-pig, for the safety of those here. Beating it will earn us their help, and then we can use their sentient undead which are willing to help."
She takes a deep breath, then casts her spell, fueling it with her own blood in the process. She was looking a little pale, she had spent a lot of blood in these tests. (Has paid about 80 hp to surrender blood!)
A small sphere raises from the ground and encompasses the goat-man, expanding as necessary. Then it shrinks again, and pulls his body below ground. She speaks as the magic happens.
"Thus, the tests. He's immune to lots of things, but he's not a golem. He's susceptible to spells that test his will, and immune to spells that target his fortitude. Sorry Mage Priest, he's immune to polymorphs. He will be sealed here permanently, unless someone casts a freedom spell. "
She finishes the sealing spell with a flourish. For the briefest moment, her eyes flash and red lines, the colory of ruddy woldsblood, connect her and the goat-man.
She watches him sink below ground.
"Magic balls and scrying and locate object won't locate him, or reveal he's trapped. Discern location does hint he's trapped, but not where. That takes a wish or miracle to find out, followed by the freedom spell to free him. He should be safe here until we need to take him home to the vault or otherwise move him. It might be best to house him here, and have the local residents built a fort here."

Tink tries to stop Sesha before she casts the spell "Yeah, I think we might still need him with us at some stage. There might be questions for him, we might need to kill him, and we might even need him for the ritual. He is a free willed construct after all. He may not want to help with the ritual, but he is free willed nonetheless. I think we need to take him with us. We can't afford to leave him here when we might need him. We might not have a way back here to get him"
She makes a few other observations "Given the things we are up against I wouldn't be surprised if we face a few miracle or wish spells too. That would mean they could detect and free him, and we'd have no idea. Ordinarily one of those imprisonment spells of yours would make a person trapped for eternity. Perhaps longer if you're the one casting it. Only thing here is that we might need him."
"I think we were incredibly lucky to have caught him off-guard and shouldn't rely on being able to do so again."

Wyaar suggests a newt. Restlin suggests a pink toy pig in a dress with a stupid look on its face and their kids can play with it when old enough. He suggests moving on and leaving Toreal in place. You know, in the time it takes us to decide what to do, pack up, and cast any buffs before we head out, my legend lore spell would be complete anyway. I'm going to go ahead and give it a shot.
