On the Way Home

In the Bight (DM SteveK)
Monday June 10th, 2019 8:18:26 AM

Wilford waits for the others for a moment then begins toward the light like a moth to a flame.

Hmerrin follows but wonders about Wilford's sanity as he follows the light like a weirdo.

"C'mon, let's get out of here." Sarge begins heading out of the Culverwood, and back toward the Bight.

Desdichado walks with the others. "That may be the first fey I've met that wasn't completely annoying. Hmm...Gaffer - you said she was a water elemental - do those count as fey, I never can remember?" "When we get back to camp, maybe we should talk about that vision and what it could mean."

Toston says, "Obviously it means trouble for Dirt City and our friends who live there. Presumably in this possible future we are all dead considering they got Tombo." He then has to explain to Sarge and Dez who Tombo is, and then the rest of Shale House

Gaffer believes Elementals are separate to Fey. He stretches and relaxes, providing his own opinion that the image was just a generality. But either way, "I believe some of us have matters to attend."
………………

The Tide walk down the path from the Pool to the Bight, the watchfulness of Culverwood maybe feeling a little less menacing. Maybe. It is with no little relief that the heroes are able to walk only a hundred yards until they are out from under the boughs of the living forest and into the sunshine of a bright Izen morning. Behind them, the forest closes up and the Pool is lost from view.

Looking about, the Unicorn Tribe is nowhere to be seen, but the stream is nearby, and it is no great trial to retrace their steps to go back to the place where they left the wagon, had the ritual combat, and partied with the Orcs of Unicorn Tribe. However, at noon, when the group gets there, there are no Orcs, Unicorns, Wagon, or traces of a large group of people staying all night. The grasses are tall and undisturbed.

Survival DC 19 Highlight to display spoiler: { There are traces of a large group being here, and of wagon tracks, but they look 2 weeks old. }

Toston says, "Well we learned that potions and scrolls spoil if left in a body of muddy water for hundreds of years. We also learned that the water elemental thinks that Wil needs to have more motivation than mere animals, Sarge needs to learn that there can be evil followers of Domi out there and I need to learn to spend more time with my followers, which I was planning to do when we got back anyway. We also learned that if that vision is correct that someone means to bring ruin to Dirt City, kill Tombo, capture our friends and presumably kill us too and possibly first."

In the Bight (DM SteveK)
Tuesday June 11th, 2019 7:41:40 AM

Wilford finds the conversation about Fey and elementals interesting and presents some thoughts.

Hmerrin ponders if the Tide learned anything from their little tromp in the woods? He wonders how much time has passed.

Desdichado asks “where did everybody go?” From the Tide’s perspective, Chief Giddeeyon and a handful of his warriors had accompanied the heroes to where the Stream of the Bight emerged from Culverwood, and they had arrived at noonish. With the discovering the directions, walk, Pool, and exit; it really shouldn’t have been more than sunset on the same day. And yet here they were, having emerged from Culverwood in the morning, and it is noon with long grass growing at the old party spot!

Sarge speculates on the Unicorn Tribe and states: “I guess we're hoofing it back to that elf city." Remembering Toston’s map of Izen, there are several routes back to Dirt City…

Toston runs down all the things he has taken away from the venture, which may include that though the Guardian knew many things that were hidden, it was possibly fickle and certainly NOT omniscient! He concludes with “… if that vision is correct, someone means to bring ruin to Dirt City, kill Tombo, capture our friends, and presumably kill us too and possibly first."

…………

It is noonish. The Tide are in a field where they are fairly certain they had the ritual and party with the Unicorn Orc Tribe. The grasses are all overgrown and there are scant traces of anyone has been here.

Sarge (Kathy)

The Bridge Inn (DM SteveK)
Wednesday June 12th, 2019 5:31:13 PM

Gaffer says the tracks look a couple weeks old, that time being screwy isn't unheard of for Culverwood, but he doesn’t like the idea of losing time like that. He suggests getting a boat and going home.

Sarge, Wilford, Hmerrin, and Desdichado all agree a boat to Dirt City is a good idea; the sooner, the better.

Toston is thinking outside the box and suggests the decanter of endless water could be a water jet to propel a hastily-built craft right across the plains of Izen. The gnome-brained-idea, however, doesn’t get a lot of traction. Wilford quickly jumps on the idea, but crafting the land-boat and the attachment goes nowhere.

………..

And so the Tide heroes hoof it back to the Peaseblossom. Their travel is much faster without the plodding wagon: less than half hour to the Trade Road, travelling past Fort Silence and the turnoff to Kouri in the afternoon, and reaching the Trade Bridge and Fort Hospitality just as the sun set.

There is a large inn at the base of the bridge which looks to cater to rivercraft. In fact, there are three large flatboats tied up at the inn’s wharf right now along with nearly two dozen smaller boats ranging from canoes to single sail fishing craft. The smell of fried and baked fish and spice wafts from the front door along with a good amount of light and the noise of many people enjoying themselves. The sign above the door has a picture of a bridge with the words ‘The Bridge Inn”.

Dimly through the twilight, a perceptive adventurer can see the lights of another town along the Trade Road to the east (Know Geography DC 5 Highlight to display spoiler: { Way Point; which doesn’t have a waterfront. }), and more lights dimly seen to the north at the eaves of the forest (to which everyone knows is Karri, the Emerald City).

The Bridge Inn (DM SteveK)

Desdichado suggests hiring a boat to take them back to Dirt City.

Hmerrin agrees, "Seems like a plan", and looks to Toston’s boating experience to pick out something decent.

Toston is psyked about using the decanter of endless water as a thrust source, and surveys the craft looking for a likely vessel that can safely take them home. It appears that any one of the three flatboats are big enough and water-worthy enough to do the job: none of them really stand out as exceptionally better or worse than the others.

Sarge is not a fan of death traps, err, boats. With a little sigh, she follows Dez into the inn.

Gaffer arrives at the inn and plops down at a table. He rests, then asks the staff about lodgings for the night and a warm meal, and pays for the Tide to keep things simple. Rooms and meals paid for, Gaffer is informed that the inn doesn’t have a bath house. “No need with the river there and all”, is the laconic reply. The druid thinks and, since he can wild shape for 9 hours at a time, there seems no reason for him not to be able to sleep as a horse, cat, dog, or anything else he can wildshape into. He does remember, however, sleeping in wildshape would mean he has one less wildshape available the next day…
…………

The food is basic; a choice of fried eel, baked fish, or fish stew tonight, with a side of mashed tubers, small loaf of crusty bread, and water. Tea, milk, ale, or wine comes extra. A berry shortcake as a sweet is also extra.

Bargemen and road travelers mix freely. The wine is good, the ale… tolerable. Several amateur performers strike up tunes with instruments covering all the basic travel and boating songs to the general enjoyment of the common room. It’s not bard-level, but its fun. The innkeep is a red-faced woman who keeps her girls in the kitchen and boys serving food and drink. Her husband and a hired hand or two tend the stables and keep the peace with cudgels hanging from their belts, but it doesn’t look like those are going to be needed tonight.

Transportation (DM SteveK)
Friday June 14th, 2019 9:18:48 AM

Food is eaten, drinks drunk (though Sarge switches after a sip of ‘ale’), and most turn in for an early bed.

Sarge, however, is not content to wait until morning to arrange a ride. And it’s a good thing too! Two of the flatboats are going upriver, not down, and the third is leaving in the pre-dawn twighlight. There was a very, very good chance that the heroes would have no boats avIlable if they waited til morning!

Sarge manages to get a ‘free passage for defense’ contract with Captain Evett, and a wake up call.

Early in the morning, a breakfast of a steaming roll stuffed with bacon and scrambled eggs, the Tide boards Evett’s Pride
and settles in to a flatboat routine.
....

Three days pass.
.....

The Evett’s Pride is passing the Izen Hills on the left, and just ahead, people can see the eaves of the Forest de Blanc. When suddenly, a whirlpool appears underneath the flatboat! “What tha?!” “Whoa!” The crew grab handholds to stay upright. (All heroes make Reflex DC 10 save of fall prone). Evett shouts to the Tide, “this isn’t supposed to be here! This ain’t natural!”

All of the Tide are able to keep their feet, and only two of the crew miss their handholds and fall on the deck(quickly scrambling to their feet).

Gaffer, thinking about lowering water, can perceive the whirlpool could actually be an effect of a lower earlier spell if cast in a deep body of water (such as the Peaseblossom River).

Toston sees that the Evett’s Pride is in no danger of being sucked under, the whirlpool isn’t that large, but it has stopped any possibility of movement in any direction as the flatboat slowly turns about.

Hmerrin looks about and sees a green figure under the shade of some willow trees, half in, half out of the water. It looks female and green, but of surpassing ugliness! She is about 100’ away from the whirlpool, and looks like she is actively casting spells! (Hmerrin has been around casters long enough to know what casting looks like)

Blue Man, Orange Gnome (DM SteveK)
Wednesday June 19th, 2019 7:11:29 PM

Desdichado is ready when the Blue Man runs past, and gives him a good swipe with the axe. He then follows across to the other side of the boat and readies himself again for another charge.

Hmerrin mutters a curse as the blue guy comes out and knocks Toston into the water.
"If there's two, there could be three," he adds, warning his friends. Pivoting quickly, he lets fly a couple arrows at Blue Man.

Sarge draws her hammer and casts Prayer.

Toston keeps afloat and charges his fists with magical energy before attempting to punch the blue assailant.

Wilford Makes a joke about a ‘Blue Man Group’, how wild are those voices? :-). He identifies the UGC a a distraction. He recalls the Spiritual Weapon, and attempts his own AOO, but misses with both, then begins to summon an Electric Eel. (Will arrive next round if not disrupted)

Gaffer changes his plans with wilford’s warning and casts Call Lightning Storm, bringing down a great lightning bolt on the Blue Man. [Damage:12; Reflex DC 19 for Half]
.....

The large Blue Man slides easily through the water, To where he is 5 feet from Toston and 10 from the flatboat, and casts a spell (Spellcraft DC 16 Highlight to display spoiler: { Obscuring Mist} ), and a fog billows about! 20% miss from 5 feet away, 60% miss and can’t target from 10 feet away.

”Ah ha! Strong! It will be a pleasure stripping you of your treasure!”

The whirlpool continues to turn the boat, slowly away from Toston and the Blue Man.

Thursday June 20th, 2019 6:36:37 PM

Sarge casts a Spiritual Weapon, but as Sarge can’t see the Blue Man, the weapon can’t target him. Her Prayer, as an area of effect that doesn’t require line of sight, does affect all Tide (positively) and the Blue Man (negatively).

Desdichado can't reach him...or see him, and can’t help steer the boat away from the whirlpool. So he keeps watch to see where he can help most.

Toston charges his fist with magic again and strikes the blue man!

Wilford intends to cast Shield Other, but can’t target Toston because Wil can’t see the gnome through the fog. The same is for the Spiritual Weapon: no visible target, no attack.

Gaffer calls for Toston and asks Blue Man his intentions. He looks for a target for his Lightning Bolt, and doesn’t get one.

Hmerrin observes he hasn’t done anything stupid in a while, so drops his bow, pulls his axe, and heroically leaps off the boat! The young man successfully lands right next to the Blue Man in a mighty splash, but fails to establish a hold!
(Hmerrin gets a Hero Point! Awesome heroics jumping off a perfectly good boat!)
......

The whirlpool continues to turn the boat, slowly away from Toston and the Blue Man.

The Obscuring Mist stops anyone targeting Toston or Blue Man unless they can fly or jump into the water.

Toston and Hmerrin need a Swim DC10 to stay afloat

”I don’t want to fight”, the Blue Man admits, ”I just want his magic items for my collection. I’ll let him go afterwards!”. And the large Blue Man grabs Toston in a wrestling move, before looking at Hmerrin. ”You stay there. You..”, he looks at Toston with a grin, “Hold your breath!”

"Hmerrin!" Sarge calls, but it's too late. Briefly, she considers jumping after him, then realizes she's supposed to be the old, wise one of the group.

The blue man doesn't actually sound evil, but you never know. Sarge aims a Holy Smite at the area where the voice is coming from.

If the blue man is actually evil, he takes 10 damage and is blinded for a round. A DC 20 Will save halves the damage and negates the blinding effect. If he is neutral, he takes 5 damage; DC 20 Will save for half.

If by some chance he's actually an evil outsider...well, he takes more damage than that. But it's pretty unlikely.

Sarge, reminding herself that she is older and wiser than most others in the group, aims a Holy Smite at the area where the voice is coming from. An area effect burst, it hurts all evil and neutral beings but leaves Toston and Hmerrin untouched! The Blue Man and the Electroc Eel... not so much. (Blue Man takes 2; Eel takes 5 damage)

Toston fails his swim check from the previous round (Ooc: but that doesn’t matter, because the DM forgot to ask last round and we never go back during combat for minor forgets, and this round, Toston is held by the Blue Man, so his Swim check is moot. No loss of Hero Point). He draws his siangham but misses.

Gaffer thinks about casting Control Water, but realizes all it would do in deep river would be to create a whirlpool... So instead, the druid also jumps into the water. transforming into a Large Water Elemental as he does!

Wilford yells into the fog, and his Elecric Eel misses.

Hmerrin lands with a splash and quips "After all I did to get here?," then proceeds to have a good start in eviscerating the Blue Man.

Toston wants to fire off magic missiles at the fleeing blue man, but the large fellow has already disappeared in the fog and water and can’t be targeted unless the gnome swam very fast after him. (no loss of spell slot) Instead, he thanks Hmerrin for his help.

Gaffer does not give chase, glad to see their attacking fleeing. To help get the others back to the boat Gaffer will have to do some swim checks against the strong whirlpool current! The Tale (and Tide) Grows (DM SteveK)
Tuesday June 25th, 2019 8:02:17 AM

Gaffer resists the urge to pat his forehead at missing the obvious solution and casts his own Control Water to counter the whirlpool. The water immediately calms and the flatboat slowly stops spinning, which allows Gaffer, Hmerrin, and Toston to swim to the side and get hauled up the two foot gunwale.

Wilford is disappointed he missed his opportunity to get that guy, then has a conversation with … well… himself? No names are named, but as long as he is learning; that’s promising!

Desdichado checks on the ship's company, "Captain, are you and your crew alright?" Evett takes a quick count and inspection of the hold, then nods. “No one else seemed targeted and the ‘Pride is water tight.”

Hmerrin stays where he is until the whirlpool subsides and fog lifts. He is able to easily swim in the calm water to the boat.

Sarge finds rope and pole in easy reach and helps the others get back to the boat.

Toston also remains where he is in the water until the whirlwind subsides. "Does anyone know just what that blue guy was?", he asks. A quick count among the heroes discovers that in the heat of battle, no one thought to use their knowledge to make an identification! The Tide figures there are many possibilities; fey, humanoid (giant), elemental, outsider, even a shapechanger hiding its true nature. But there are some clues… (Know Planes DC 24 Highlight to display spoiler: { The Blue Man was a Marid, a powerful water-genie of unpredictable nature {ie chaotic neutral} })

……………

The Blue Man, whirlpool, and fog are gone and though high in potential danger, the encounter left only a few of the Tide wet. It impressed the Evett’s Pride to no end, and around the evening meal of smoked fish, some water cress and dill, and watered wine, the crew try to outdo each other describing the story of the fight; each tale more embellished than the last.

Hmerrin works his way back into the boat, and sets about the unenviable task of drying out armor.

Toston does not know what the blue man was. Seeing as he doesn't wear armor all Toston has to do is get his normal clothes dry, but his monk's robe also needs to dry. Toston says "I can hit harder but be less accurate with my curveblade, really with any weapon but my curve blade is probably the only weapon I own that it makes sense to power attack with."
