Plain of Cracks (DM Cayzle & DM Michael) Wednesday May 29th, 2019 11:05:59 PM
There is a quick common consensus to avoid the golems, and so you skirt around and circle past. That seems to work fine -- so long as you are not within reach, they seem to have no orders to attack.
The temperature is hot hot HOT! And the terrain is a blasted ruin of slag heaps, chasms, and boulders. Soon the golems are out of sight. An hour passes. WHO DOES NOT HAVE HEAT RESISTANCE of some kind? make a DC15 Fortitude saving throw each hour or take 1d4 points of nonlethal damage. Characters wearing heavy clothing or armor of any sort take a –4 penalty on their saves.
At last the terrain flattens, and you find yourselves looking over a flat plain. There’s something out there say a quarter mile out. A building? A giant? You’ll have to cross the plain to get there. The plain is flat, but cracked and strewn with rocks. It is difficult terrain.
AC 23/ T23/ F20 CMD23. HP 136/136 Tishe’ (SteveK) d20+11=14 ; Thursday May 30th, 2019 5:25:27 AM
Tishe’ walks and sweats. She is experienced with hot conditions, but not acclimated, and thanks her forethought to have her Endure Elements Spell active. (Ooc: rolled in case that is not enough. 14 fail)
At the sight of the very difficult terrain, the Sorceress decides to take to the sky, casting Fly Spell. And then she has another idea, suspicion really. “We’ve been told, whether we believe it or not, that the land is a reflection of the wizard. What if it is not just passive? Could Maegos be watching us and testing our tactics? When I was first in Cinnamon Valley, the villain Skalipy often did scary upon our group.”
And with that thought, Tishe’ casts Detect Scry.

Emrys and Daemon make their way along the hot barren wasteland as cool as cucumbers. The magic keeping them comfortable is working like a charm ... no, an evocation. Emrys looks down at Daemon as he slithers through the sand and considers a thought ... a thought he had never considered before.
Daemon looks up and says, "I can hear your thoughts."
"Then what do you think," asks Emrys. After a short pause, "Ohhh, excellent choice!"

Barratore gives a shake of his head to scatter the sweat every so often. He was glad for the Endure Elements from V. Staring out across the the blasted terrain, Barratore snorts. "About 1500 feet. Bit far for a scouting mission Edson." Barratore falls in stride a few feet to Brom's right and just a step back to easily keep him in his visual field.
"Can we all fly in once we get a bit closer. I have a potion."

Plain of Cracks (DM Cayzle & DM Michael) 10d6=29 ; Thursday May 30th, 2019 10:32:42 PM
Tishe’ is fine with her Endure Elements. Suspicious, she casts Detect Scry. OOPS! That fails. Recall the DM Post of April 24 -- all dimensional and divination magic fails in this demiplane.
“As you pass over the threshhold, you have an odd feeling, similar to entering a Rope Trick spell or hopping into a portable hole or entering a mage’s mansion spell. Any magical detection effects you have currently active fail. You sense a “fzzzzt!” and you note that your bags of holding or other extra-dimensional spaces become inert and inaccessible.”
Velarin says, "I already cast an Endure elements upon myself and Barratore.” He has one more left.
Brom leads the way, ignoring the heat.
Edson is hot but dealing. He offers to scout ahead invisibly.
Lanliss is ok with the heat too.
Emrys and his spirit companion use witch magic to stay comfy. They commune telepathically and consider a potential surprise ...
Barratore discourages scouting at the moment, and offers flight later on.
After about 100 feet of travel into the cracked broken plain, you find that you have moved into an area of unstable ground, and the surface beneath your feet cracks, releasing a vent of steam that scalds and burns. Emrys is not able to avoid the steam and attempts to warn the others of a buzzing sound. Daemon avoids some of the blast.
Tishe continues to feel confounded by the teruchi magic
Lanliss was close to avoiding the steam but still gets hit by it pretty solidly.
Velarin avoids the steam and then casts fly on himself. He then moves 15’ into the air.
Barratore partly dodges -- Brom and Edson are both hit by the steam full force.
[OOC: The DMs ask you to keep your headers up to date!!]
The party looks up to try to find where the noise is coming from. Emrys and Velarin see four swarms of insects crawling out of the cracks in the ground and homing in on the party. These are indeed swarms, as you deduced! They are large insects, like hornets or bees, but either coated in or composed of a silvery metal.
As these swarms attack, they provoke AoOs from those attacked -- however, their immunity to physical damage means there’s no reason to roll unless you also inflict energy damage as part of your attack.
A swarm flies out to cover Emrys, inflicting 10 hp damage. Please make a Fort DC 17 save; if you fail, please take 4 points of Dexterity damage. Spellcasting and other actions in the swarm require a concentration DC17 check.
A swarm flies out to cover Edson, inflicting 10 hp damage. Please make a Fort DC 17 save; if you fail, please take 3 points of Dexterity damage. Spellcasting and other actions in the swarm require a concentration DC17 check.
A swarm flies out to cover Lanliss, inflicting 8 hp damage. Please make a Fort DC 17 save; if you fail, please take 1 points of Dexterity damage. Spellcasting and other actions in the swarm require a concentration DC17 check.
A swarm flies out to cover Velarin, inflicting 16 hp damage. Please make a Fort DC 17 save; if you fail, please take 1 points of Dexterity damage. Spellcasting and other actions in the swarm require a concentration DC17 check.
[DM Reminder: A swarm is immune to critical hits and flanking. A swarm composed of Fine creatures is immune to all weapon damage. Reducing a swarm to 0 hit points or less causes it to break up, though damage taken until that point does not degrade its ability to attack or resist attack. Swarms are never staggered or reduced to a dying state by damage. Also, they cannot be tripped, grappled, or bull rushed, and they cannot grapple an opponent. A swarm is immune to any spell or effect that targets a specific number of creatures (including single-target spells such as disintegrate). A swarm takes half again as much damage (+50%) from spells or effects that affect an area, such as splash weapons and many evocation spells. Swarms made up of Diminutive or Fine creatures are susceptible to high winds.]

Emrys and Daemon are assaulted by countless bites and stings. He instinctively activates his Bramble Armor (free action) and the hard, sharp thorns deal damage to the swarm (Damage: 12).
He heard their mechanical buzz, he feels the metallic skin ... he has an idea. Both him and his viper scramble back out of the swarm and Emrys immediately begins casting. A swirling cloud of antimagic fills the area of the swarm that had attacked him. If the swarm is a construct, then the magic giving it life will be deactivated. If they are magically summoned, then they'll return from where they came. He hopes for a good result.

Flying Velarin casts a dim door spell to move 60’ back and away from the swarm. He then casts fireball at the swarm. He discovers that the swarms are immune to fire. However, the friendly “fire” may affect Edson and Lanliss -- you two, please make a reflex save DC24 for 42 fire damage, half if you save (no damage if you save with Evasion).
Flying Barratore grimaces as the swarms attack the others.
Emrys activates bramble armor and attempts to move at a distance and casts greater dispel magic on the swarms. The bramble armor is useless against the metallic bugs. And Greater Dispel Magic does not stop constructs from functioning ... unless you can find a rule your DMs don’t know?

Two lightning bolts later, the last two swarms are dispersed. Your kindly DMs even allow that the path of the bolts can be angled, in this mapless fight, to avoid the PCs within the swarms. Metal hornets defeated, the heroes may sigh in relief. Or can they?
After all, there is quarter mile of this rugged cracked terrain ahead of you. You just travelled 50 or so feet in, and these steam issuances proved a hazard. Looking across the plain, now that you know to look, you can see steam blasts at random times and locations all throughout this plain.
Emrys has backed off and is out of danger. Tishe’ and Velarin and Barratore are flying above the blasts and are out of danger. Will that magical flight last long enough to cross a quarter of a mile? Edson and Brom and Lanliss are exposed to future blasts ... and the future is only a moment away!
How will you make it across this terrain, oh heroes? And do you suppose that there were only these four swarms lurking within hives under the cracks?
Also note that two heroes are poisoned, and you know what they say about poison and making another save a little in the future ...
[OOC Note 1: I am assuming that you good folks are tracking hit points and spent resources accurately. Per Emrys’s note, yes, I am not surprised at all to hear that some PCs are actually quite injured ... and a quarter mile of this terrain lies ahead. Good luck!
OOC Note 2: Looking back through the archive, it seems like the DMs have not awarded any experience points at all for this adventure so far. That’s not cool. For scene one, please accept 120,000 xp. For scene two, please accept 150,000 xp. (The cracked plains is scene three, and you have not yet completed it!) Also please email us any nominations for hero point awards.]

He is relieved to see the metallic swarm defeated. Emrys is surprised to see several members of his fellowship appear more injured than he had expected.
He waves everyone to move in close ... he wasn't wanting to shout at everyone from a distance, and he didn't want to cast a dozen or spells to heal everyone up.
"We don't need to keep walking over this volatile wasteland ... it's proving more troublesome than expected. I say we take to the air and avoid it as much as possible. Emrys then begins casting a sadistic little spell where he uses his own lifeforce to empower a spell. A spectral dagger appears in his hand and with a sigh, he slashes it across his throat. He immediately goes pale and a ghostly wound appears on his neck. He places his hand against the wound and his fingers become stained with a black ichor. The wound fades.

Feeling depleted from the Blood Magic, Emrys then casts a Cure spell on himself.

First, Emrys takes care of his friends with cures. He restores all three points of dexterity damage to Lanliss and ensures that Lanliss and Edson no longer take more damage. Edson is still down seven dex, though.
Then the party debates: Extended Fly spells or Wind Walk?
Tishe’ wants to casts extended Fly on anyone who needs it. She is supported by Baratorre.
Emrys wants to boost his caster level with a blood sacrifice, and then to cast Wind Walk on the party. He is supported by Edson, Lanliss, and Velarin.
Brom is just happy to be cured.
The DM pushes the plot forward with the Wind Walk spell. The spell is a bit like a mass Gaseous Form, so your action choices while wind walking are limited. Then again, you are immune to swarm attacks while you travel, a benefit the Fly spells would not provide. And you fly high above the stem blasts, so its all good.
You arrive at a small open air domed temple. It looks something like this, but without the people or plant life or railing. Hovering above, you see in the floor under the dome spiral stairs going down.

Emrys explains how the Wind Walk spell works [OOC: To both his friends and to the multiverse at large, lol!].
Tishe’ takes this lesson to heart. She moves to E6, next to Barratore. She spends five rounds changing to gaseous wind walker form, then flies at speed 10 across the stream of lava. Taking two move actions, she ends her hustle 20 ft across.
As she crosses, five of the magma elementals shout (in Ignan) “Dodgeball!” They throw balls of magma at Tishe. Of the five, only one hits, for 1 hp plus 3 fire damage, and the DR10 bestowed by the gaseous form and the fire resistance means no damage for Tishe.
Velarin and Lanliss follow suit. They too attract the attentions of the playful magma creatures, and another five balls of lava fly out ... one is a crit threat on Lanliss, but it fails to confirm. Again, the DR and Resist Fire effects mean no damage for the two gaseous fliers.
Barratore waits to see what happens ... the DM assumes he waits to start assuming gaseous form (takes five rounds).
Edson and Brom wait too!
On the other side, the heat coming off the curtain of lava and the heat from the stream of laval behind are very intense. Tishe’ takes 34 hp of fire damage; Velarin takes 36 hp of fire damage; Lanliss takes 21 hp of fire damage. Of course, your fire resistance takes 30 off the top of that, right? There’s still some damage coming through -- it is THAT hot. Well, not for Lanliss because 21-30 means no damage this round.
All three are in gaseous form, and it takes five rounds to condense back into normal form. We’re round by round because of the damage. And the dodgeballs.
The lava curtain is thick and gloppy. You see that there is some open space beyond. If those next to it make a perception check vs DC25, then Highlight to display spoiler: {The space behind the curtain is open at least 20 or 30 feet forward, and there’s a wall or obstacle or something beyond.}
You cannot pass the curtain in gaseous form -- you would have to physically push or swim through, and per the spell, you “can't enter water or other liquid.”

Edson looks to make sure its 100% covering the opening. That there is no small hole or crack they can squeeze through in their form. Checking the walls too for cracks.
Tishe’ thinks out loud about which spell might work, but can not seem to come up with the answer.
Emrys questions whether they are in the right place as it “seems to be a nursery for elementals.” He then suggests a polymorph spell on the floor to create a tunnel to make it past the curtain.
Brom awaits for the group’s decision.
Velarin agrees with both Emrys and Barratores plan.
Edson has the good idea to check for cracks or narrow ways the party can go before creating their own. Alas, he finds no egress.
Emrys casts his spell, with the clever idea of changing the floor into a tube that passes through the laval curtain. Your rules-lawyering DM is noit positive that you can polymorph a portion of a floor ... but the spell does polymorph ANY object ... and it is both clever and cool ... so it is allowed!
Using his witchy REACH, Emrys shapes a tunnel, 5 ft in diameter, 20 ft long, with a 1 ft bore. It extends through the lava curtain to the other side.
The party takes the time to assume gaseous form and floats across the lava. The elementals shout for joy and pelt you with molten stone. Ten throws ... there’s even a critical hit! But your DR and fire resistance makes that all moot.
On the other side, you each take 7 hp damage after fire resistance. The tube has begun to heat up, and passing through that, you each take 3 more hp fire damage after resistance. 10 hp damage each total (including Daemon, of course).
On the other side, the room extends another 30 ft beyond the lava curtain. There IS a fissure here, a big one, bisecting the far wall and extending into the ceiling. To go further will take climbing or flying. You have not yet returned to regular form.

As you look around the cave, you see that the two figures look a lot like ghosts ... like identical twin human male warrior ghosts. You hear a voice from the ceiling.
The voice says: “One forever speaks the truth. The other always lies. Make your choice and quickly now, or everybody dies.”
The ghost on the right says, “Heed me, I speak the truth. Mine is the correct course.”
The ghost on the left says, “No, he lies. His advice will lead to your death! Your death and eternal doom!”
“Of course you’d say that, you lying liar. Don’t be fooled by his lies!”
“No he lies! The true path comes from my advice!”
The big lever between them starts to glow. It is set in a big slot so that it can be pushed up or down.

Brom solidifies as Barratore does. He prepares for trouble as he becomes solid.
Learning the nature of challenge, Brom puts the point of his sword and leans against it.

The lever starts to glow and Tishe’ wracks her brains to see the trap in this old cliche’. “The obvious question would be to ask one what the other ghost would say would be the way to avoid certain doom, and then choose the other door. The truth-Ghost would truthfully point out the certain doom, because the liar would point that way. The liar, knowing the truth-Ghost would point the way to avoid, would lie and point at the certain doom.”
So Am I overthinking this, or is that the answer?” .....

Lanliss tries to find a solution to the problem. He is struck by the magical keepers quick answer and their explanation on the solution. "Is it that easy ?", he asks himself. "How did you notice it so quickly folks ?", he asks the arcana users in the party. He gets close to tishe, thinking for a more few moments. He gets the answer as he begins the smart realization that they got. "Now I understand !", He exclaims. Lanliss volunteers to push the lever. "So which way folks ?", he asks hesitantly and waits for confirmation from the keepers to make sure he moves the lever in the right direction.

Brom readies himself for battle.
Emrys suggests that both ghosts are liars.
Edson nods in agreement with Tishe.
Lanliss and Velarin agrees with Tishe’ and V wonders what the worst could happen…
Tishe’ shares with her friends a concrete way to reason out this puzzle. She wonders if she is overthinking things, or if thinking about whether she is, is overthinking? And as if hearing V’s thought, Tishe’ wonders...what really could happen?
Barratore agrees with Tishe’, grabs the bull by the horns, so to speak, and asks the ghost on the left “What would the other being say would be the way to avoid certain doom?”
The LEFT Ghost says, “Let’s ask him!” He looks at the RIGHT Ghost and asks it, “What would you say, to avoid certain doom?”
The RIGHT Ghost says, “Pull the lever DOWN, of course.”
The LEFT Ghost looks at Barratore and says, “Of course, I say push the lever UP!”

Tishe’ smiles wryly at Lanliss. “It is a classic tale told in the Woldian League of Adventurers, Sieur Lanliss. And I suppose it was a well known tale even the mage’s time, because he has added a twist: there is no guarantee they HAVE to answer our questions!”
She thinks for a second, offering ideas for the other Keepers. “Maybe there are scratches showing wear to be a clue as to which way the lever goes. Or maybe neither door is correct, and there is a secret door. Like a carny’s cup-and-ball game, where every choice is wrong if you play by the rules provided. We have no guarantee that the Magic Mouth is telling the truth.”
While her pack mates do their thing, Tishe’ turns to the ghosts, “Maegos is certainly a waxed beater, isn’t he? Cut your threads and trapped you in this undying state. You poor pitiful creatures!”
Tishe’ carefully watches the two ghosts, seeing if she can get a hunch as to which is the liar.

Emrys decides to revise his way of thinking in this twister of logic.
"The left ghost asks the right ghost which direction to avoid certain doom. We can assume by asking the question, the left ghost doesn't know the answer. The right ghost gives a definite answer to this question, down, of course ... without any doubt. Then the left ghost addresses Barratore, without being questioned about either outcome. Is the left ghost's answer referring to certain doom or not, or is he simply being oppositional? If the left ghost is simply stating the opposite, then he is lying. The right ghost would then be telling the truth."

Lanliss listens to the keepers and feels fear as Tishe mentions Maegos, hoping that this won't trigger a violent response from the ghosts but as the moments pass. Lanliss hits his head with his right hand as Barratore and Velarin (hopefully) find an easy solution to the problem, a rather very simple solution.
As a backup, Lanliss tries to find something in the Lever or in the area that might give a clue to the existence of either a trap or a rigged game (both choices are doom)/

The Lever (DM Cayzle & DM Michael) Tuesday June 25th, 2019 11:15:15 PM Tishe’ investigates in her mind for clues. She engages the ghosts in conversation and attempts to see if she can read anything from them. She has the vague idea that something is not on the up and up.
Emrys tries to figure it out, but does not say anything to the ghosts.
Barratore the bold steps forward to speak. He asks the LEFT ghost. "Is the other ghost to my right?" The LEFT Ghost says, “Well, ya got me. YES, he is to your right!”
Velarin holds up his hand with two fingers in the air and asks each of the ghosts "How many fingers am I holding up?" The LEFT Ghost says, “Two.” The RIGHT Ghost says, “Three? Four? Some number other than two? And by the way, make sure you pull the lever down.”
The LEFT Ghost just rolls his eyes.
Lanliss takes a really close look at the lever. He sees that clearly it CAN go up or down. He also perceives that it can TURN, like a key. And that it is connected to a trap.

Lanliss takes a closer look at the lever, he sighs with frustration and makes a circular move around the lever. Ignoring some of the stimuli Oaround him he says after a few moments "I think if we take it up like Velarin said we will get the result intended by the designer" he makes a move with hands pointing his hand to the lever "of this 'thing'..... "I am going to try to find a way to disarm the trap or rather disconnect the triger" He exhales and continues "or rather... I am going to make the wrong choice not work"
He then goes on to disable the device or rather thee connection to the trap. He looks above the lever and a little bit underneath it looking for visible or invisible trigger or something that is connected to the trap.

Edson is ready for a fight.
Lanliss explains how the lever can be utilized to the party and agrees with Velarin about pushing the lever up. Lanliss then attempts to disarm any traps connected to the lever. After his very skillful efforts, the lever will not go up or down. It will still turn, though ... that seems safe enough.
Brom puts his sword over his shoulder ready to attack either of the ghosts. His keen eyes notice that the ghosts seem disturbed at Lanliss’s findings and pokings -- they do not look as carefree as they did. More nervous like.
