DM Warren: A new Assignment Friday July 5th, 2019 7:44:43 PM You all have a reasonable amount of time to prepare. The evil, while pervasive, has not showed signs of increasing its rate of spreading. Still, it cannot be allowed to sit and fester for too long.
From what you can tell, there is no jurisdiction of the castle for the local lands. It is a wizard's tower that has slowly grown over the years, rather than being any authority.
The town has signed a contract, and while they can't pay much, barely enough to cover our expenses, they have forfeited the right to any treasures found inside. If it's truly a lich, there should be plenty of treasure lying around. And if it's not, then it'll be a short turnaround, and not too much trouble.
The villagers should have more information for you when you get there.

As an accomplished mage the spells would be stronger than his ability to hit someone in melee."

Palance barely, but visibly reacts when Anna casually mentions being able to turn into a dragon. It makes sense, as this is a power not to be taken lightly. Cold won't do you much good against an undead, and neither will electric attacks. He will be difficult to harm in general.
I would try to surprise him, and find a way to nullify or resist powerful magics. Take the time to prepare properly, but don't take too long. The townsfolk shouldn't be left to suffer longer than necessary.

Besides being immune to cold and electricity, liches are also known for their resistance to divine power. But they seem to burn just fine.
The spells they have are particular to the individual, so you can only guess at those, but you know they will be powerful. The location of the phylactery is also personal, and you're unlikely to find any clues in this library.
Not much is known about ownership of the castle, other than it was created and inhabited by a wizard centuries ago. If he has turned into a lich, then it very well could be the original owner, but someone else may have moved in in the meantime. There has been little to no contact with the residents, though something must live there, as supplies have been observed going in and out.

Anna and Pru seem to have the right of it. Most things going in are raw materials, and out tends to be alchemicals and other magic and scientific sundries. They come through a myriad of places, but there is a large central market in Whitebridge where most things are available. Other necessities must come from special order and farther afield, as no records are available for rarer items.
(I'll have to check on the tear, if that counts as a weapon or not. I'm not familiar with them.)

Sigvar finds that a Lich also is resistant to all but blunt trauma. This does not phase the paladin as he knows that Gargul's might will overcome any resistance to his wepaons a puny evil creature may hold. He can help his friends overcome it too, but only if they are close, and fast, He speaks to the quartermaster at the Fist exchange about trading magic weapons for an Eberyon's tear. It might be handy to be able to have his horns be magical too.

Last thing, he goes to the library and makes a copy of the map showing the directions of the town and its environs (hills, streams, forests, whatever the map shows).

Michael chooses a mule as per his habit. and puts the old pack frame he used with Daisy on the animal. he arrainges the teams packs and bedrolls on the frame and in such a way that he has a little bed he can sit on while riding. This is a paint mule, white and brown sploches color his fur, the mule is alert and spry, about 2 years old if Michael is any judge. an uncut male, so he'll have to pay attention wth this one. Luckily he's following others and mules being herd animals will always follow the herd.

It is usually best to camp outside rather than spend money and stay at an inn.

Nikolai enjoys watching some of his friends practice their flying but worries a little that in their excitement they forget how long the spell lasts and end up way up there when it expires. But Pru mentions that this is not the way the spell works, that when the spell expires, the flyer simple floats down. Not only that, if the flyer is knocked unconscious, the just floats down also.

The first night's travel is indeed easy. You can sleep outside, but there's a well established friendly inn a day's travel away, and there's nothing that is likely to attack in this area. Days 3 and 4 are the worrisome nights when camping outside will be necessary.

now that Anna can stay up all night it should change the night guard rotation. still it is possible for a smart enough attacker to take out the guard quitely and then attack the camp. With that in mind, Michael looks at Anna and thinks about just how powerful she is. Hey Anna? I really appreshiate you taking the night guard. if you get bored or just want to get a break from staring at the night, wake one of us up.
when they stop for the night Michael tends to his mule, and then tends to whatever needs tending to from the trip. he hobbles the animals as well as hitches them to a lead line. any thieves coming to steal horses will have to take extra time to remove the hobbles before they can ride off with their perloined perchons.
He then scouts around the camp a bit, it neve hurts to know the terrain and get some ideal of what may lurk around the area.

Anna has no trouble getting enough light for sustenance traveling on the open road like this. The weather is pleasant with only a few clouds scudding across the sky.
She has a nice chat with the others about her unique abilities, how she can adapt to almost any situation, be it combat, scouting, or disguise.
The Agents make their plans for keeping themselves safe in town or in the country, but for now, none seem to be needed, as the towns are relatively safe, and the group is obviously not one to be messed with by the casual cutpurse or street tough.
Their night of camping is pleasant enough too, with stories told around a fire. Pru makes a big deal about swatting at the bugs, but once full night falls they tend to settle as well.

It seems some of the Agents have lost their sense for things moving in the dark. However, with Pompous and Nikolai's keen eyes, the things moving in the dark do not go undetected.
They seem to be shy about encroaching, but there are several person shaped things moving about in the dark, with a few larger shadows moving with them. They don't approach enough to be identified though.

Once it's clear that they've been noticed, the shadowy figures melt into the night seemingly without a trace. All that remains is some disturbed soil to mark that anything was ever there.
The rest of the night passes quietly with nothing else to disturb them.
The next day is almost as pleasant as the last. The sky is a little bit cloudy, but that just makes the sunburn progress more slowly. Night begins to fall and they need to camp once, unless they want to travel through the night to the next town.

As soon as it is light enough, he studies the tracks they left so he can identify them again as they travel. Survival (Track) +17 = 23
Perhaps to get a chance to catch the snoopers, Nikolai decides to camp out again but now that all are weary of the snoopers, they have a better chance.
"Micheal, Pompous, anyone know how to set up some simple noise making traps? let's tie some ropes from tree to tree with noise makers attached. We got pots and pans an forks and spoons. Anna could be an animal with extra good smell or a bat with echo location. If they are of skin and bones, she could locate them without them even knowing they are being 'seen'."
The watch order is set up as usual so if the things return they won't suspect that they are being expected. "However, everyone needs to be on their toes. Pru, have some web spells ready so we can nab them, unless they are indeed shadows."

Examining the tracks, it is difficult to determine where they may have gone, but it is very odd. While the shadows seemed humanoid, the tracks seem like they were left by something scuttling and insectile. Definitely solid, and not shadow creatures.
Best you can tell, the tracks were from some large burrowing insect that may happen to look like a humanoid from the right angle.
The Agents make sure to set up their camp in a wooded area so they can make some simple traps that should alert them of any nighttime visitors.
It's full dark and oddly quiet out, which makes the sudden skittering noises all the more ominous. Those on watch can see the shadows moving again in the flickering light of the campfire. One of the noise making traps begins rattling off to one side.
They continue to approach. You have a chance to react quickly before they get fully into the light.

Nikolai and Michael flank one of the humanlike creatures, which up close resolves itself into a bipedal insect with facelike patterns on its head and wings that can pass as a cloak at a distance.
Michael's second strike hits a soft spot.
Anna shifts into a dragon and threatens the attackers. Pompous looks around for a tree to use as cover, but there isn't one convenient enough that isn't past a huge spider.
One spider and biped attack Michael. The biped strikes once for 6 damage and a failed grapple.
Another pair attacks Anna-Dragon to similar effect, hitting once for 8 damage, and starting a grapple.
Trayvin is hit once for 11 damage and is not grappled.
Pompous is hit once for 6 damage and is not grappled.

Sigvar beats on his captor, inflicting some heavy damage but not enough to escape its grasp.
Pru drops her signature spell on the battlefield, and it doesn't matter how evasive they are, as they're all so damaged already that they can't handle the heat and fall.
Trayvin activates his godly powers, allowing Sigvar and Anna to easily pop out of the scorpion and biped claws.
Nikolai's first three blows put his target down, and the last two make sure he won't be getting up again.
Anna bites, scratches, and pummels her grappler, making him regret his actions a bit.
Pompous, being freed of nearby threats, puts his volley into the scorpion's hide.
The last spider tries to entangle Nikolai in some sticky webs, but is unable to make them connect.
The two bipeds near Anna seemed to be hoping to grapple and take her down, and are hissing in frustration at the aura preventing them from pinning her down. Maybe the poison will work though. She is bitten once for 15 damage (DC19 Fort Save or take 4 dex damage)
Sigvar is harder to hit again now that he's not surprised, and the scorpion can only bonk him once with a claw now that he's not restrained. The biped can't hit him at all. (1 claw unconfirmed crit for 20 damage)

The scorpion should be dead by any rights, but it keeps on fighting. That is until Trayvin roasts what's left of its head with his holy magic.
Anna whirls about her target, and maybe would have killed it if it were evil. Unfortunately, it's just a huge hungry bug.
Nikolai circles around and strikes the spider, which rears back to retaliate before getting skewered by Pompous. He's able to switch his last two shots to Anna's target, taking that one down as well.
The last two begin attacking, one drawing blood on Anna again. (11 damage, DC19 fort or 1 dex damage). But instead of continuing to attack they both seem to turn their heads at the same time. Anna's target starts running back into the tree line and the other dives towards the hole left by the Emperor Scorpion.

Sigvar slows his target down, but can't quite fit in the tunnel to pursue. It seems the scorpion can compress quite a lot. this doesn't slow Michael though, who slips easily into the hole and finishes it off.
Nikolai can't quite grapple the bug, it's as good as he is. It starts to retreat to the air, but is slapped down by magic missiles and a dragon. It doesn't stand a chance. And good thing too, because there's probably more where these Xenopterids came from.

Clarification: you're about 5 days ride out from the Citadel, and another 2-3 days from Whitebridge.
There is no sign of additional movement, and the tunnel soon ends, as it was not structural. It collapsed only a little bit behind the scorpion as it burrowed.
From what you know of these creatures, there is quite possibly a hive somewhere not too far away, but it is also not likely related to what brought you out. Bugs in general are not evil.

Wherever they came from, there is a Mind behind their actions, that's quite evident. They probably have scouts that hunt for prey then bring the main attack force to capture and kill. Unfortunately, it is hard to track their insect leg prints. Also, hunting them down would give that lich more time to do whatever he's doing.
I suggest we spend maybe half a day looking for travel marks, like broken branches, crushed bushes and such, then if we don't find anything, move on.
