Tsak nods at Angus' suggestion I thought of that too, but in a town this small I don't see how we could keep an eye on him without appearing suspicious.

Tsak also grabs a house ale, purely for the purpose of blending in, and makes himself comfortable in a seat against a wall where he can see all around him.

Rolth Niheow (BatMark) (39/40 HP | AC: 15; Touch: 12; CMD: 21) | Glaive +7 1d10+6 x3 | Paws (2) +5 1d4+2 x2|

Rolth looks around with a pleased smile and says aloud, "What a jolly place, this Green Giant. Thanks for the welcome, sirra. We could use some food, drink, and lodging!" More quietly, he will ask this fellow liontaur a few things. "What's with the second class citizen status here, brother? Why are the minotaurs so suspicious of outsiders. Is there anything we should know about town rules to stay out of trouble?"

Kiwina looks at the folks gathered in the tavern, interested in seeing if any are minotaurs. He's not sure how he would tell locals from outsiders, but guesses that minotaurs would more likely be local.

OOC: Too late to have Mak accompany Gadin? If not.

With a glance backward Mak took off after Gadin. He kept a few paces behind the large taur until Gadin slowed and Mak came alongside. "Where are we going?" Mak said as they continued on into the community.

OOC: If too late...

Mak followed along with the petals and kept to the back of the group as he made certain he deferred to the taurs with him. This area seemed rather insular to him so he wanted to keep a low profile. When they arrived at the tavern, Mak ordered the biggest tankard they had and found a comfortable seat to watch the room.

Elyas will also try to follow Gadin, and leave the logistics to other members of the group
"Gadin, wait for us. you shouldn't just go off alone, if something happened to Yesia and whoever did it knows you're working with her you could also be in danger. if i had just murdered someone I wouldn't want their friends poking around, you know? Mak and I will make sure you're safe while we try to see what happened.

Tsak Rezar points out that seven heavily armed people following around one person in such a small town would not work.
Elyas is also waved off by Gadin, explaining that it’s not necessary.
Rolth Niheow is his usually friendly self, and tries to see if there is a reason for the segregation.
Kiwina looks around to see if he can tell any of the locals apart.
Falco Ambersier quietens down as people decide what they want to do.
Angus Macgrump requests a simple drink and expresses concern for Gadin.
Mak follows the Petals, after Gadin waves him off, saying something about he’s less threatening by himself and will get more info. Once they arrive at the pub, he takes a big tankard and sits quietly.

The Barkeep smiles widely.

“No problem, we can do food and lodging here, and inexpensive too…”

His face drops a little as Rolth asks about the situation.

“Wel.. the Minotaurs here are quite conservative, and don’t like the idea of the Taur races mixing again… it’s not ideal, as they weren’t that welcoming to being with, and now with these deaths, the tensions are running higher than ever… just keep your nose clean and remember you’re guests here and you should be fine.”

A few hours later, Gadin returns. He has a sad look on his face and speaks to you all.

“It seems Yesia was murdered last night… I have convinced the guards that you can be trusted to investigate the murder, as you were coming to help her with her investigation, which is the most likely reason she was killed.”

He sighs, and a small tear wells up.

“They are keeping the body at the Temple, and there is the site where she was killed. The house she was killed behind is inhabited, I think in the morning we should begin investigating these, and anywhere else you think may be relevant… please, let me know what you think and where you want to investigate. I’ll leave you to get some rest, and we’ll start at dawn tomorrow.”

Gadin leaves you, and the rest of the night is spent in mostly silence and melancholy, eventually you all head to bed and are woken up the next morning by Gadin, who awaits you in the main tavern room.

You are quickly served some breakfast, which again is eaten in silence, as Gadin says nothing until you are all done.

“So… where do you want to go first? Or have you a better idea?”

Mak (JamesM) (36/40 HP| Init +4 | AC 19/14T/15FF | CMD 21 | +1 Longbow(Str +3), +9/+9 To Hit, 1d8+13 Dam. ea. Rolls:

Once Gadin was gone, Mak cocked a eye at the leaders of the petals to see if they had any idea at all about where to start. There were a few things he'd check if he had the skills, but he'd be more likely to bungle the investigation if he tried to do those things.

"If it happened last night and the scene hasn't been disturbed too much we can look for tracks." he suggested. "Maybe check the body to see how she was killed. I think we need to look at the site now though, waiting won't be good. Oh and by looking for tracks, I mean someone else. I'm rubbish at that my beans."

Angus agrees that the scene of the crime should be investigated first although it might not hurt if someone skilled in the healing arts went to examine the body at the same time.

Kiwina might be able to identify an injury or check for tracks. Too bad it's already been a day. "Let's go to the scene of the crime first, and then examine the body." He might not be opposed to splitting up if he felt a little less obvious here, or if the party had a minotaur among them.

Tsak Rezar (Damien) AC15 (T13/F12) 36/36 HP| Falchion +4 2D4+3|Crossbow +1 1D8+1|Status: None  d20+1=20 ;

(Tracking=20+6 for 26)

Tsak figures that with his good nightvision he might be able to spot any tracks, and he agrees that checking things out now rather than waiting for morning is a good idea.

I would like to check the scene of the incident tonight, but I don't think we all need to go. Maybe just Kiwina, Gadin and myself for now. That would help preserve the scene and also not create a scene, if you know what I mean.

If Gadin is willing to show them he will scrutinise the area to see what he can find.

(OOC apologies, rolled the check wrong, should have been D20 +7 for tracking via a survival check)

Rolth agrees with going to the scene of the crime first. He suggests going by a roundabout path, to avoid attracting the attention of whoever might be watching for investigators. He’ll keep his eyes peeled for anyone watching or threatening us on the way and while at the scene.

Tsak Rezar will go and check for tracks at the crime scene.
Elyas also stands watch to ensure that no one else pays the Petals any undue attention.
Rolth Niheow suggests an awkward path to obfuscate their true motives, but keeps his eyes peeled for anyone showing interest in them.
Kiwina says that going to the crime scene first would be better than examining the body.
Falco Ambersier offers to go and look at the body by himself.
Angus Macgrump agrees that the Crime Scene should be a priority, but looking at the body simultaneously can’t be a bad thing.
Mak suggests looking for tracks away from the crime scene, though admits it’s not his skill set.

Gadin nods, leading you to the scene of the crime.

This is behind several homes, there is an alley between two of the homes in the town of Greenfell. The house on the left is just in front of cliff face (perhaps 20 feet from it) with the town hall next to it, flush to the cliff. This leaves a small open space behind the home. To the right the cliff begins to curve away from the town, widening out, with some foliage leading out to a road, but blocking the view from the road. The body was slumped down next to the house on the left, in the small space between the house and the cliff.

There is a guard watching over it, however Gadin asks you to wait a moment, and goes up to the guard, gives him a few coins, and then comes back over.

“You have a few minutes at the crime scene, please, learn all you can.”

((OoC: To help the flow of this investigative section a bit, I will explain how it’s going to work, at each site, each of you may make 2 Skill Checks, tell me what skill your using, and what you’re searching for, and I will give you any pertinent information. Finally, he will approach the guard who was on duty and chat him up, hoping in the process to glean some information about the scene, crime, and events. He'll share a snack and ask, "Guard duty, eh, Sorry you've gotta stand around here minding not much of anything. Anyone else come along to relieve your boredom while you've been standing watch? Elyas tries to look over the scene and looks for magical things also.
Rolth Niheow looks to see what he can see, and then discusses things with the guard.
Kiwina tries to tell more about what is going on.
Falco Ambersier tries to look over the body and scene, but can’t seem to find anything.
Angus Macgrump sees if he can find anything, then climbs the cliff.
Mak looks over the scene himself, and tries to think if he’s head anything that might point to any enemies.

((OoC: I’m going to allow you all to make one more check each, as EVERY SINGLE ONE of you did a Perception roll. Which means you had 6 skill checks (out of a possible 14) gaining you the same information, for the other investigative scenes, may I suggest using a different skill check from everyone else if you can :P))

If you passed a DC 15 Perception check, you can read this - Highlight to display spoiler: {On the walls there is clear signs of weapon damage, as some of the attacks missed the victim and struck the walls of the building.}

Spoiler - Kiwina - Highlight to display spoiler: {The ground has been trampled, by a group of people, including the victim. It looks like there are signs of a struggle, however the victim was still overpowered.}

Rolth, chatting to the guard, unfortunately doesn’t get very much information at all.

“I just stand guard to prevent anyone interfering with the scene. I know the records keeper was murdered, and that apparently you lot are going to be investigating it.”

When he says “you lot” there is a clear note of disdain in his voice.

Is there anything else you wish to check before moving on?

Rolth asks Kiwina whether the weapon marks he found were high up, as if used by a large creature such as a minotaur, or down lower. Also, whether they were large sized, short blades or medium. That might give us some clues, and explain or refute the paranoia we've felt here about outsiders.

If it isn't super-late, Rolth is all for continuing the investigation by examining the body, then the workplace. Otherwise, so shut-eye sounds good, with a fresh start early in the morning.

DM Dan - The Investigation Part 5
Friday July 26th, 2019 5:03:20 PM

Tsak Rezar suggests investigating the body next.
Elyas suggest looking at Yesia’s home first, then her office.
Rolth Niheow queries if the can tell anything about the height of the attackers, but sadly not, perhaps the body would show more?
Kiwina suggests checking Yesia’s home and place of work.
Falco Ambersier is held outside the temple and not admitted until Gadin arrives.
Angus Macgrump looks over the weapons with Kiwina, but cannot fathom anything further than Kiwina has already mentioned.
Mak queries if a number of attackers can be determined, but it doesn’t seem likely… not with the information you’ve discovered.

((OoC: Since there is some confusion, Gadin would have only brought you here in the morning. This is the morning after you arrived in Greenfell, you would not have been able to do anything the night you arrived as Gadin was not present, and you need him to gain access to the various places.))

The party seems to agree, for the most part, to go and investigate the body next.

You arrive at the small temple within the community, and Gadin leads you into a small ancillary chamber where they prepare bodies with last rites. The building itself is very modest, with mostly wooden pews and the like.

The room the body is in, has it on small raised platform, and it has a covering over it. A Minotaur priest is attending to it, once he sees Gadin and the rest of you he speaks.

“Ah Gadin… I see you brought the investigators you mentioned last night…”

He turns to the Petals, clearly looking uncomfortable, and in over his head.

“I’m Priest Shelian… this is most unusual… I’m not really equipped to deal with this sort of thing…”

He sighs.

“What do you want to do first?”

Kiwina first asks the priest what was done to prepare Yesia's body. Then he examines her wounds to see what he can determine about her attackers (height, strength, maybe number). (roll: heal = 18) He will also look at her natural weapons, trying to gage how successful she must have been at wounding her attackers.

"They wouldn't let me in until Gadin arrived. Now they see we brought the investigators... "

Once Priest Shelian shows up he is no less annoyed with the situation.

"Ahhh Priest Shelian nice of you to show up. I speak for the warper-sar... so kind of a priest too.... you know what never mind. Lets see the body at this point. "

Elyas uses the knowledges he has to great effect.
Rolth Niheow tries to detect any magic, while also looking through her mundane items.
Kiwina uses his knowledge of healing to look over the body, alongside Tsak
Falco Ambersier looks over everything, and thinks closely about the room itself.
Angus Macgrump checks over Shelian, being the only other person in the room.
Mak looks over the body with his professional eye.

Shelian looks as if he’s about to respond to Rolth and Tsak, when you all go over to the body. Shelian simply watches as you all go to look at the naked body, all her belongings have been set to one side.

“Impolite…” he mumbles under his breath.

Falco, Angus and Rolth - Highlight to display spoiler: {It would appear that Shelian is somewhat offended, it seems he feels you are desecrating the body and haven’t even asked his permission to look at it, you’ve all just gotten stuck in.}

Rolth sees the priest's upsettitude and offers, "Apologies, Priest Shelian, I truly intended to proceed in a certain sequence, talking to you first. He waves the others to desist for a moment, then re-asks his questions about events here and wait for answers. Only then will he continue his investigations.

Mak wasn't an overly religious person. In fact after dealing with the cults from his home country he was bit leary about them as a whole, but still he did notice that the priest here was more than a little put out by their enthusiasm with the inspection of the body.

The soldier also knew there wasn't much more he was going to be able to learn here, so he stepped back and tried to do a little damage control with Shelian.

Shelian nods curtly.

“I understand, however it’s rather rude…”

He seems to relent and relax.

“I did find one thing that you may find interesting… she had with her the Register of Births and Deaths…”

He wanders off to a cubby hole and pulls out the book.

“I was going to give it to the constables once they came to get the body, but I suspect you would get more out of it since you’re investigating with Gadin’s blessing… I hid it because there is rising tensions between the Minotaur community and the Liontaur community… which is probably where you were forced to stay.”

The half-orc decides to keep an eye on Gadin. Whilst he seemed genuine about wanting to help Yesia, and upset over her death; there was something in his interaction with the priest, like they were holding back.
If the rift between the Taur races is as bad as it seems then it might be affecting people's judgement. Potentially friendships and other obligations take a second priority at times like these.

Rolth and Mak - Highlight to display spoiler: {It would appear you have caught the attention of the local guard. Kiwina - Highlight to display spoiler: {You notice on her horns are small tufts of hair, some matted and horrible looks to be from a liontaur, and some clean and washed that looks to be from a minotaur.}

Elyas - Highlight to display spoiler: {You see that the book has notes, but they only go back a few months. There’s no widespread thing you can recall that happened a few months ago, but it appears that there is something about the records, all the marks appear in the Deaths section.}

Gadin leads you across towards where Yesia works, a small room off the Town Hall. He sighs.

“There has been rising tensions between both our community and that of the Liontaurs in the alienage… I fear Yesia may have been killed by the Liontaur… though for what I do not know…”

He lets out a long sigh.

“I don’t know… I just want this to be over… though if she was killed by a liontaur, then this will cause greater friction between us and them…”

After a few minutes of moving through the village, you arrive at the annex attached to the main town hall building. It’s a room that looks somewhat like a library, with books and papers everywhere, in shelves and stacked over desks. There is another Minotaur who is at one desk and looks up when you come in, and then he simply points at the only other desk in the rather small room before going back to his work. He looks older than Yesia was, and seems to be very settled in his desk.

And of our recent comrades, Gothruk and Sble, both Minotaur companions when we won the Taurnament of Roses. Hopefully that will slowly start to erode the suspicion that we face.

Once in the office, Rolth will introduce himself to the other occupant, and ask what he knows of Yesia’s activities on the night she was slain, and what she had been working on in the days leading up to it. Did she have any unusual visitors or messages? Any altercations with anyone?

Kiwina quietly tells his friends that Yesia appears to have fought with both minotaurs and liontaurs. He asks Gadin what he knows about the other victims.
Rolth is polite to the guards and makes a point to drop the name of notable locals and the Petals recent fame. Once in the office where Yesia asks the clerk there some questions.
Tzak looks around this small office. The papers and books seem to be a chaotic mess. He studies Yesia’s book that was given by the old priest Shelian.
Falco asks Gadin why he thinks it was a liontaur that killed Yesia, suggesting that such talk may increase tensions. He asks Gadin about the recent deaths.
Elyas asks Gadin about the recent deaths.
Mak makes it a point to shake the hand of each guard you encounter, giving his name, rank and the order to which he was attached.

The large minotaur guards reach down and uncertainty shake Mak’s small hand as he pointedly introduces himself to each. Most look at him in silence and exchange glances among themselves. A couple will mention that he is a long way from Asildur. One will whisper a seemingly sincere warning that Mak should be careful, but refuses to say more if asked.

Rolth’s politeness earns him a few frowns here and there, along with a few neutral looks as well. The occasional indifference almost seems friendly in contrast.

Falco continues to notice a number of stares from those you pass. While some show some disdain, none seem to him to be especially interested in your group. But he can tell that no one ignores your group as you pass. Ranging from a large centaur and liontaur down to a small owl-man and predatory cat, you definitely stand out in this largely minotaur community.

Sense Motive DC 14 Highlight to display spoiler: {There is a tension here from those you pass, focused mostly on Kiwina and Rolth. Some of the guards may be wondering about Mak’s sanity.}

Gadin responds to Kiwina and Elyas, ”I ... I don’t really know much about the recent deaths. Yesia was looking into them. Why do I think it was a liontaur? Well , we didn’t really have any problems before they got here. They tend to stir up trouble here. Not sure why. Not sure why they even want to be here.” He glances around as he says this.

In the office, Rolth politely asks some questions of the older clerk there. He looks up, seemingly having ignored you until this point. ”Eh? Name’s Lukran. I been here a lot longer ‘n Yesia was. Shame about her. She was new here - nice kid. Was lookin’ into the deaths of a few folk new to Greenfell. That’s her desk there - have a look if you want. She lived nearby.

“The night she died? That was a couple nights ago. Nothing strange about that night that I recall. She left here, same as always. Always pretty tidy, but she must’ve come back because things were a bit messed up on her desk. She even left that window open, but it’s been a bit warm lately. Visitors or altercations? Not really. It’s the guards that usually deal with reporting any deaths - they just give us the information and we record it. Since Ranter works here, he usually brings this information to us.”

Kiwina asks how long the liontaur community has been here, suggesting that it may be good to speak with them as well. He also looks over Yesia’s desk.
Falco has his doubts about what he’s hearing.
Mak looks around the office, but all he sees is a big mess as thinks back to one guard that seemed genuinely concerned about his welfare.
Angus has some dark thoughts, and moves into a position where he can shove a knife into either Gadin or Lukran if needed.
Rolth give voice to some dark thoughts, suggesting that Lukran is hiding something and implying violence if he is not more forthcoming.

The old clerk is clearly no match for Rolth. His eyes go wide as he pulls back from the young liontaur, visibly shaken. ”Hey, hey now, I don’t want any trouble! And I certainly know better than to mess with a liontaur -you guys mean business! I think it’s been some from the liontaur community that’s been involved in the killings - probably that hothead Juran. Yesia thought some of the records had been altered. The window? I don’t know why it was open, but it was - you can look for yourself. I just don’t want to happen to me what happened to Yesia, so I don’t ask those kinds of questions.

Ranter? He’s the head of the guard here in town. He’s here in the Town Hall - probably in his office down the hall right now. Please mister. I don’t want any trouble with the Duke, and I especially don’t want any trouble with you.”
You’re pretty sure if he were not trapped behind his desk with Angus behind him he be running for the door about now.

Gadin is a bit startled by Rolth’s approach but does not interfere. He responds to Kiwina’s question, ”The liontaurs have been here a couple years. They set up a trading post, but, well, there’s been trouble. Not sure why they even need to be here. But I try not to question the Duke’s decisions.”

As Kiwina looks over the papers on Yesia’s desk, something catches his eye. Some of the death records don’t look quite right - the names have been scratched off of some of the records. And there are notes on her desk - but this will take some time to sort through. And it may require a clerk’s skill to puzzle this out.

DM Mark - From intimidation to an apology
Monday August 5th, 2019 1:08:30 PM

Angus looks over at Lukran’s desk, which is almost at eye level for the half-orc.
Mak steps out of the room and closes the door behind him.
Falco moves over to the window and looks out. He can see that there is a foot path beneath the window.
Tzak asks about the trouble Lujkran mentioned, the liontaurs and Juran and Ranter.
Kiwina says he’s having trouble sorting out the records on Yesia’s desk and moves to examines the window.
Rolth tries to move from intimidation to an apology, asking the old taur for help with Yesia’s ledgers and such.

From what Angus can see there is nothing unusual on Lukran’s desk. Lukran seems to handle local events. His desk has a lot of papers on it, some ledgers, several flyers for local events - A picnic being put on by the Horned Society, a magic show offered by the Great Razooley, the promotion of a liontaur trading event by a merchant named Wenzes, etc.

Kiwina - Highlight to display spoiler: {The building’s security has been compromised here, the locks on the window has been jimmied open from the outside.}

Lukran responds.

”What trouble? I just don’t want any trouble with anyone, especially you folks. You seem to be here on official business and I won’t interfere.

“The liontaurs? We’ll they can be a feisty bunch. They want to trade. They set up a community here in Greenfell, there’s a wooden fence bewixt them and the rest of Greenfell. Ranter set that up. It maybe for the best, but fences can make for hard feelings. Ranter also set up a curfew to keep the liontaurs out after dark - Ranter says it’s to keep everyone safe. That’s been a thorn in their side, and it’s given that troublemaker Juran something to make a fuss about. Though I’ve seen his kind before and if there wasn’t a fence and curfew, it’d be something else he’d be complaining about. Rotten kids.”

Rolth give the clerk Yesia’s ledgers and records (smart move getting Lukran to go over these for you.) Lukran studies them for a bit, including the ledger that Shelian gave you.

“Hmmm. Most unusual. Most unusual indeed. It looks like… it looks like some of these records have been altered. Yes, there seem to be a number of … it looks like liontaurs that died, but their official death records are missing.”

DM Mark - "Time to go speak to some of the Liontaurs."
Tuesday August 6th, 2019 9:05:55 PM

Kiwina notices that the windows have been damaged in a way that suggests they were forced open from the outside.

Falco can see that there were tracks beneath the window, and that care was taken to obscure the tracks. He does not see any particular damage to the wall.

Rolth is able to work with Lukran to identify seven names of people that were killed where steps were taken to remove records of their deaths. Lukran will say these seem to be lionatur names, though he is not familiar with any of these people.

The window here is large enough for a large creature to have squeezed through.

There is general agreement among the Petals to visit the liontaur community and seek out someone named Juran. Gadin says, ”I have some matters to attend to. Besides, it’ll probably go better for you with the liontaurs if I’m not with you. I’ll leave word with Lukran or Ranter about where you can reach me. You may want me with you if you go back to visit that family that lives near where Yesia was found. Or if you need to get into Yesia’s house.”

The Petals proceed down the street toward the liontaur community. You notice that there seem to be more guards near the wooden fence that separates Greenfell proper from where the liontaurs live. As you pass the fence, you see some flyers posted. They simply read, “The Horned Skull is watching.” Angus recognizes a symbol on the flyer matches one he saw on a flyer that was on Lukran’s desk.

Passing into the liontaur community, you are met with some greetings and some stares. They don’t get too many of the smaller folk though here, and noone has seen anyone that looks like Falco before. But people here are polite. You also see a few minotaur guards here wearing the Greenfell livery. The liontaur community is a bit cramped, though not much worse than Greenfell proper. It is, however, noticeable that those living seem to be poorer that in the rest of Greenfell.

Asking around for Juran, you are directed to a small, simple hovel. There are no windows. You knock on the door and a liontaur opens it. You can see inside. It is small - four walls, a door, a bedroll in the corner, a fireplace against one wall. The liontaur before you is young and a bit disheveled.

”Yeah? What do you want?”

More for the other gathering liontaurs than for Juran , Rolth continues, "Domi has many aspects, and the fact that we are here shows that he has not forgotten. Do you not see these Marks of Domi upon my arms? Have you not heard of the Eight Petaled Rose, blessed by Domi to win the Taurnament of Roses? Perhaps it is true that some Minotaurs only understand might, but the same can be said for some of us liontaurs back home. But not all, either there or here. Do you know that you are suspected of your own mischief here? Good Kiwina has asked a good question, namely, ‘why are you here?’ If the circumstances seem so unsuitable to you? And what have you done to make the situation better? Let’s hear your side of the story, so that we might seek a just solution and stop the killings."

Thursday August 8th, 2019 11:41:47 PM

(As a point of clarification, all minotaurs, liontaurs and centaurs speak their own language and a more general Tauric language. Most here do not speak Common. The DM will assume in this case that someone in the party will translate the Tauric language if needed.)

Kiwina challenges Juran in what he said, and asks him why he’s here in Greenfell.
Rolth says to all there, "Domi has many aspects, and the fact that we are here shows that he has not forgotten. Do you not see these Marks of Domi upon my arms? Angus wonders about the Horned Skull group, and who might benefit if liontaurs and minotaurs are at odds .
Tzak asks who the Horned Skull are. (I didn’t know he asked this aloud last time.) Tzak moves a bit back from the Petals and watches the crowd.
Elyas asks about the symbol on the flyers.
Falco also watches the crowd.
Mak listens.

As noted before, there are few minotaur guards here wearing the Greenfell livery.

As you engage the larger group in this liontaur community, there are a number of responses.
”Domi be blessed as he blesses us each day. He watches over my family, he does!”
“Nice tattoos. Are you a priest of Domi?”
“I sometimes fear that Domi has forgotten us. I wonder if we should even be here. There are some liontaurs that are missing - they probably back to Liontaur Isle.”
“You ask why we are here? Why shouldn’t we be!”
“I come here for a peaceful life for my family Sure we have some things to work through here, but at least we don’t have hell hounds to contend with!”
“Aye, no hell hounds is a pretty good reason!”
“We may not have hell hounds, but we do have mintotaurs that hound us.”
“It’s the minotaurs that cause trouble for us. We’re just here to make a life for ourselves.”
“No, that’s where you’re wrong. The minotaurs I know are good folk. It’s the ones in that Horned Skull group that cause trouble.”
“Yeah, what kinda jerks use a skull as a symbol?”
“Domi calls us to resolve our differences peacefully. Maybe that’s why we need to be here.”
“Yeah - tell that to those Horned Skull jerks!”
“Stop the killings? What killings?”

DM Mark - "...seeking to unite all taurs through acts of good. "
Friday August 9th, 2019 7:21:54 PM

Kiwina watches Juran as he asks if about a half dozen liontaurs have gone missing.
Rolth shares his hopes for taur unity. He mentions murders of taurs, mostly liontaurs, asks about the Horned Skull and what a kaleb or kuleb is.
Falco watches and waits.
Elyas recalls an obscure religious text relating to mintoaurs practicing some sort of honor duel called a Kayleb, but he doesn’t know much more than that.
Angus has heard that a Kayleb is an ordered combat is often used to settle disputes, where honor demands resolution. The fight is usually involves some sort of referee or arbiter. It can result in death, but usually does not.
Mak watches and can tell this is not going well...

More liontaurs seem to be coming forward now even as a few scurry away.

”Horned Skull? Oooo, they’re bad ones, no doubt about it.”
”It’s called a Kayleb I think. Some stupid minotaur thing. I think they just use it as an excuse to fight.”
“Unite the taurs? Would that it were possible. Tell that to Ranter!”
“At least we don’t have any centaurs here stirring up trouble. Oops, except for that one. Uh sorry...”
“Yeah - whose side are you guy on anyway?”
“Murders? What’s this talk about murders? Are you saying those missing have been killed?”
“Murders? That would explain those that have gone missing!”
“Hey, how come one of you has a cat?”

Finally, in a loud voice Juran steps forward and yells, ”ENOUGH TALK!”. He stabs his finger in the air, pointing toward the two minotaur guards across the way. ”THERE’S your problem! Several of our people HAVE been murdered, but THEY don’t want you to know. THEY represent the authority that would grind us under their heels! THEY represent the hatred that fuels the Horned Skull! THEY are the problem, and until we deal with them our people will keep getting killed! WHO’S WITH ME?”

The tone of the crowd has shifted. You don’t need any sense motive skills to know that things are about to erupt here. Any children have been shepherded out of the area, and the more peaceable liontaurs have left. Some others have quietly arrived. Some carry daggers or improvised clubs, while others reach down to pick up rocks. And all have claws and teeth.

The guards ready their spears, fear and resolve in their eyes.

There about a dozen liontaurs near the Petals and Juran, and they are focused on the two minotaur guards about 30 feet away.

What now?

Rolth gapes at Mak's audacity, but then realizes the brilliance of the maneuver, and chimes in to distract the other liontaurs while the challenge gets resolved. "My liontaur brothers, it is apparently true that some of of our kind have been murdered. But so have some minotaurs been murdered. So your anger is misplaced. I think that someone is trying to turn our communities against one another, and playing off of our suspicions to trick us. So let us not act in haste and anger, but rather seek true justice, as Domi would do, once we find out who is manipulating events and setting taur against taur. Who is with me?"

As he says this, he moves between the guards and the bulk of the liontaurs, and keeps an eye on both groups.

Angus can tell that Juran is fired up and looking to turn the crowd against the two minotaur guards there. Angus tries to hide here, but he finds that he has neither cover nor concealment so he is not in a position where he is not being observed.
Mak steps forward as he says, ““Enough, this bickering has to end. Juran I challenge thee to a Kayleb.” Then he draws a short sword.
Tzak quietly waits as he sizes up the situation around him.
Rolth tells the small mob of minotaurs that someone is trying to turn liontaurs and minotaurs against each other. He calls for peace as he places himself between the liontaurs and the guards.
Falco does likewise.
Kiwina creates water above Juran and asks him about Ranter.
Elyas calls for peace as he looks for good anchor points for a Web spell should it be needed.

The sodden Juran says, “Kayleb? Ha! You would invoke a minotaur tradition? And for what? No sir, I am not interested in a Kayleb! And the time for talk is done.” It seems that dropping some water on Juran did little to dampen his spirits.

The two guards address the Petals. “We represent the Duke’s authority here. You lot say that you are here on the Dukes business? If that is true, then you will help us arrest this rabble rouser Juran for inciting an attack on Ranter’s guards!” The guards ready to defend themselves.

The crowd pauses for a moment, seemingly unwilling to attack Rolth and Falco. But only for a moment as they then push past the Rolth and Falco.

"Neither will we tolerate such uncivilized behavior, which is unbecoming of a liontaur or any taur for that matter. Angus makes sure noone is sneaking up behind him.
Tzak points a loaded crossbow at Juran.
Rolth has harsh words for both the minotaur guards and for Juran. Then Rolth throws a net on Juran, but the net barely misses.
Kiwina tries to hit Juran with a Stormburst, and while it misses the liontaur it does provide an impressive burst of wind and rain near him. Then he warns Juran that he cannot fight all the guards on the island. (For future reference, Kiwina is always armed because his hooves grant him a natural weapon attack.)
Falco tells everyone not to use deadly force, and attempts to hold Juran with a spell. But once again, Juran avoids the effect.
Elyas however puts an end to the matter with a large web spell.

Strands of grey material start at Juran’s locations and shoot out in all directions until a sticky grey mass fills the area. It catches everyone except for two liontaurs, the two minotaur guards and Elyas (who I presume placed himself so he would not be enveloped.)

The guards say, ”Good work there wizard! You’ve immobilized Juran and these others.
Wizard, er, what’s your name? Can you release these people from this webbing one at a time?”

“Juran, you’re under arrest for inciting violence against a town guard. As for the rest of you lot - you are not under arrest. No actual harm came from you following Juran’s direction. At least not yet, so see that you don’t take any further actions that will change that.”

The two non-bound liontaurs drop the clubs they were holding and flee, clearly scared as they glance between Elyas and the guards.

Some in the webbing struggle but either make minimal headway or only manage to get themselves more entangled. A few seem to be standing stock still. Interestingly, as this provides cover, Angus could now try to use stealth to hide.

Mak has enough soldier left in him to realize that his intimidation gambit has failed, and the correlation of forces here is not in the Petals' favor if things turn lethal. He drops his shortsword and pulls out his bow, readying a precise shot if anyone attempts to use lethal force on one of the Petals.

Mak is glad to see that the threat of this combat is over--he's seen enough senseless bloodshed for one lifetime or three. He lowers his bow without firing. "You lot, and I mean all of you, minotaur and liontaur alike, are lucky this went no further. There is nothing to be gained from such hatred, and you might think about actually talking about your differences before a bunch of you get yourselves killed. I hope you liontaurs have learned a bit about how things can go when you let your emotions rule you. Scatter off while you can, before the law gets heavy on your heads. And you minotaurs are lucky to walking out of here alive, and I can see in your eyes that you know it. Life is simple, shape up or die. That's not a threat, just a prediction based on long experience." He winces in pain as he twists a hip to look around at all of them...

Elyas walks over to the guards and speaks quietly with them about what to do next.
Hello! my name is Elyas, one of the members of the Eight Petaled Rose. I'm glad you lot showed up, but let's see what we can do to diffuse this situation and not let it blwo back up on us

he looks into the web as far as he can to get a guage for how people are reacting. (sense motive = 23!)
he also knows the guards are trying their best to do their job and that there is cause for Juran to be arrested. (know local = 12)

I don't think these folk will be much of a problem. most of them sound more scared than angry. I think a little show of force was enough to dissuade anything too rash. unfortunately, I do not have a way to release the web slowly. it's not exactly a .... precise... spell.

Elyas pulls out his small ornate dagger
Cutting our way through the web will take a while, but is the only way to get through only a portion of the web. a flaming weapon would make it much faster, but I don't have one. or, if you think you can get in and arrest Juran quickly I can dismiss the entire web in an instant. I recommend that second option, as I don't think the crowd is in much of a mood to fight. worst case scenario I can just drop another web if people don't disperse quietly...

DM Mark - "Life is simple, shape up or die."  d100=15 ; d20=4 ; d20=10 ;
Wednesday August 14th, 2019 12:01:47 PM

Mak tells everyone to calm down, and that life is simple - shape up or die.
Rolth struggles against the webbing, calling to be let out.
Elyas discusses the situation with the guards, and dispels the webbing at their request.
Angus uses the webbing to hide, and once it’s released he blends into the shadows near a wall.
With the webbing gone, Kiwina keeps a sharp eye on the freed liontaurs.
Tzak puts away his crossbow, and his cat stops it’s mewling and starts licking its fur as it huddles by his side. His big cat was not happy being caught up in the sticky mass!
Falco likewise smoothes his ruffled feathers as the webbing disappears.

Once the webbing disappears, it’s easy to see that the fight has gone out of this group of lointaurs. Some are rather terrified in fact, and look warily at Kiwina, Falco, and especially Elyas. In Taur, you hear,
“By Domi’s teeth, the guards are using wizards now!”
“Yeah, I’m not messing with them.”
“We’re...we’re sorry.”
“We're living in a dictatorship! A self-perpetuating autocracy, in which the working classes…”
“Oh, there you go, bringing class into it again.”
“Well, that's what it's all about! If only people would--”
“Shuddup. Let’s just get outta here.”

Most don’t speak and pull back from the scene, as a few quietly watch.

Juran looks ready to run, but seeing the Petals and the guards he seems to come to the conclusion that would be futile. He continues to rant about injustice and murders and the need to rise up, calling for liontaurs to join him!. The guards bind his hands and hobble his legs so he cannot run. Then they gag him to shut him up. “Inciting violence against a guard. You’ve pushed it too far this time Juran.”

Turning to the Petals, they say, ”You want to see Ranter? Good. We’ll need you to come with us anyway to bear witness to what happened here. You did well, and are a credit to Greenfell. You might even make good guards.”

“Ha, now that would be something - a liontaur guard!”

Do you accompany the guards and their prisioner?

If so, the liontaurs seem to be silently watching you all as you go. Once you get past the wooden fence, Gadin rejoins your group, and notices a hobbled and gagged prisioner.

He asks the Petals, ”Uh oh. What happened? Who’s that?”

He'll carefully steer the conversation around to try to get some useful information about them, without provoking suspicion. He'll try to find out things like how long Ranter has been in charge, who appointed him, when the murders started to happen, how long the Horned Society has been active in town, and any other such clues and tidbits.

DM Mark - "Give us some time to try to sort this out."  d20=9 ;
Thursday August 15th, 2019 8:54:36 PM

Rolth lags back a bit to offer a quick explanation to the liontaurs there. They regard him warily.
Kiwina also lags back a bit to assess the conditions the liontaurs living in here. He can see the space they have been allocated is somewhat of a cramped area bordering Greenfell proper and a cliff face. While it’s not a lot worse than the rest of Greenfell, it is worse and it is noticeable that those living here are poorer than in Greenfell.
Angus and Mak follow along, keeping a sharp eye out.
Tzak follows along with his big cat trotting behind him.
Falco says, "Petals, despite the peaceful resolution I do not think that went well. Something is wrong with the segregation in this area, honestly I think we would normally be on the side of the liontaur. Lets insure this fellow is treated fairly, he did incite violence but it appears he and the others have been provoked for some time. Sadly we may need to push this all the way to the Duke, lets just hope he is fair as he has seemed to date."

As you walk, the guards respond to Falco’s statement. ”No offence to you Rolth or the rest of you folk, but we didn’t ask the liontaurs to be here. They came of their own accord, and they have been allocated space. The Horned Skull would have them all shipped out on the next boat to Liontaur Isle. While I don’t agree with that approach, people like Juran here don’t really help the situation much. And carrying on about murders is just stirring people up.” The guards don’t seem to want to answer Rolth’s questions, however, simply telling him they work for Ranter, and he can answer their questions about Ranter and the town.

Gadin will tell you, ”I know you wanted to speak to the family that lived in the house next to where Yesia died to see if they recall anything. I checked, and they are back in their house now if you still want to talk to them. Maybe they saw or heard something that would help.”

Eventually you return to the large building that housed the office of Yesia and Lukran. The guards carry Juran around back to a holding cell consisting of stone walls, narrow windows and a metal-bound door. Juran is unbound and the gag is removed and he is grumbling and complaining that now you see the violence inherent in the system. He is placed in the cell and a guard is posted. They eventually lead you back into the building, but you head down a different hall, away from Yesia’s office and to a larger office. You are all led into Rantur’s office.

He sits behind a large desk covered in papers. He looks up from a report he seems to be writing.

The guards do their best to explain what happened - they were on patrol, they came across the Petals talking to Juran, and Juran managed to incite the crown to attack the guards. They note that it was the Petals that protected the guards and stopped the conflict peaceably.

Gadin introduces himself to Ranter who seems to know him. Gadin seems proud to be standing with you as the guards paint you as heroes.

Ranter says to the Petals, ”Well, you are to be commended for your actions. I am told you are investigating things on the Duke’s authority. What have you found so far? Are you getting the information and help you need?”

Rolth is a bit suspicious of this Ranter fellow, so he is not immediately forthcoming about everything that we have learned. "Well, we're just getting started, so not too much to report yet. Looks like Yesia was killed to cover up something about the other recent murders hereabouts, but I couldn't say why yet. She fought back against her killers, for all the good it did. Speaking of fighting, where does one go to get some healing around here? Just in case we run into trouble ourselves. And what's the story on the Horned Society? What are they about and how long have they been active here? Not a group we're familiar with." Rolth will watch Ranter carefully during all this to see whether what emotions these various questions might bring to his face.

On the way to see Ranter, Kiwina says, "Falco, I think the guards showed restraint." It doesn't really address what Falco said, but he recognizes that the guards did well in trying circumstances. He also recalls that the liontaurs involved in the attack were not those present when the Petals started talking to Juran. Some had left, others had arrived. "And I'm not sure the attack wouldn't have happened anyway."

Kiwina lets the others do the talking with Ranter, for now. He is interested in one of the things Rolth asked the guards -- how long has Ranter been in his position. Also, who determined the liontaurs' accomodations. But for now, he tries to guess Ranter's personal opinion of the situation with the wemics (sense motive = 11).

Rolth is not forthcoming about your investigation and does not fully answer Ranter’s question. He asks about where you can get some healing and about the Horned Society.
Angus is suspicious of Ranter (though it’s unclear why.)
Mak Keeps a sharp eye out for any Horned Skull flyers. He sees one that mentions a Horned Society Picnic being held in a couple weeks.
Kiwina listens.
Falco suspects someone is manipulating people.
Elyas eyes Ranter’s desk.

Several of you try to read Ranter, but find him a bit inscrutable.

Ranter’s desk seems to be an organized mess, more reflective of active work on too much paperwork than things being ignored. Elyas finds it hard to casually read what Ranter was working on, but it seems to be a report of sorts with names, dates and information in specific locations.

Ranter responds as he give you all a measured look. “Healing? You were all at the Temple speaking to Shelian. Was he unwilling to help you? You don’t look hurt though. The Horned Society? They are a local service club dedicated to providing social activities for minotaurs in Greenfell. Unless you were asking about the Horned Skull, which is a group that promotes minotaur values. They are a more recent group and can be a bit militant in their views, but so long as they don’t cause any trouble they will be tolerated. I would imagine there are minotaurs that are members of both groups.”

“I cannot say that I am pleased you are here investigating things. Gadin here is poking into matters best left to professionals, and likely stirring things up in the process. It speaks of a lack of confidence in our authority and work here.”

“But I am glad you came to see me, as it saves me chasing you down. Tell me, exactly what is it you believe you came here to investigate? As for Yesia’s death, yes, that is a matter of great concern. It is interesting that you arrived just after she was killed. Did you know Yesia? Whom are you seeking healing for? How long have you known Gadin here? You said you were here on the Duke’s authority, but do you have any letters or documentation from the Duke? Did you actually speak to the Duke about this? How long do you plan to be here in Greenfell? Where are you staying? What's up with the cat?”

Gadin remains silent and mostly stares at his feet.
