( Due to his background, Angus has a general distrust of authority. Of course, the more Ranter speaks, the deeper his suspicions of Ranter grow)

The sudden shift in tone and message from Ranter, only confirms Angus's suspicion. He decides to speak up for a change in order to poke Ranter.

"Promotes Minotaur values" you say, sounds more like they are promoting intolerance and division with the Liontaurs from what we have seen so far. Could it be this group is not as innocent as it pretends to be?

I wish Gothruk or Sable were here, Kiwina thinks, referring to the minotaurs who used to be Petals. Still, it's time to break his silence.

"We were asked to come by Gadin. The Duke's own guards brought him to us, along with the Duke's request that we help him. Gadin told us that he had taken a message from Yesia to the Duke, whereupon the Duke offered him our help. So, really, we were send to help Yesia. Having found that she has been murdered rather puts a damper on things, as our appointed task to help Gadin help her may now not be possible." (Diplomacy = 5)

Kiwina is diplomatic enough not to add what he thinks -- But clearly Yesia did not trust the professionals here, or she would not have gone over your head to the Duke. A vague threat that the group is watching hardly sounds like the promotion of values to me, and Ranter's relationship to the group just became more important to any investigation.

Tsak keeps his face blank at the mention of Esmerelda. The feline has taken up position in front of Ranter and is eyeing him off with an unblinking stare. The only part of her that is moving is a rhythmic swish of her long fluffy tale.
Tsak thinks that she's still upset about being covered in web goo, but it might be useful to let this bureaucrat think that he's the cause of her ire.
He declines to answer any questions. If this fellow had done his job then the Petals wouldn't need to be here.

Rolth answers, "No, no, we're not hurt, just wanted to make sure that we knew of options in case we do run across someone who has been injured, what with the recent violence around here. Of course we knew about Shelian, but it would be good to know if others can also help if we aren't close by there. With respect to our charge from the Duke, it was specifically to sort out the murders that Yesia asked for help with. So that is our task from our dear friend, the Duke. Maybe if the tale is good enough, we can all end up in an epic poem by Gnym of Gnym. He's a friend too, do you know him? So anyway, we're glad to be here to help, and understand that it is a bit awkward for you as the responsible authority hereabouts. That's why we came to see you so soon. So why don't we share info and try to get this resolved as soon as possible, so we can be on our way? What have you learned about the recent murders of minotaurs and liontaurs here?"

"I would be interested in what Minotaur values are? I was once a halfling and I do not think anyone could list the values that all halflings felt. Is there something specially wrong with minotaur that they all have the same values? Is this just an attempt to make them all think the same and cause divisions?"

Kiwina says that your group is here in response to a message conveyed by Gadin, which was Yesia’s request for help to the Purple Duke.
Falco asks what these “minotaur values” are, and if there is something wrong with mintoaurs that they all have the same values.
Angus says that the notion of minotaur values sounds like a way to promote intolerance and division with liontuars, suggesting that the Horned Society may not be as innocent as they pretend to be.
Tzak keeps is mouth shut and his face expressionless.
Rolth answers Ranter’s questions and refers to your “dear friend, the Duke” as well as your friend Gnym. In spite of his friends’ provocative questions about minotaur values, Rolth tries a collaborative approach, suggesting that you all share information about what’s going on.
Mak looks around Ranter’s office a bit.
Elyas looks around the building, making a mental note so he could locate this room from the outside.

Ranter regards your group for a few moments before he speaks.

“I appreciate your relationship to the Duke and this Gnym person, but I have a job to do. It’s not easy keeping the peace here, and while I respect the Duke’s authority, I am here and he is not. You say he has sent you, but you offer no proof but your word. And since you arrived about the time Yesia died, I asked you direct questions about YOUR whereabouts and activities around the time of her death, and you will not answer them. It is my job and my responsibility to investigate these matters. While it seems unlikely that you had a hand in her death, you have information that you are not sharing with me.”

“So, here is what I know. There is trouble in Greenfell with the liontaur community. There have been acts of violence, particularly from that Juran fellow picking fights. Yesia has been killed, and my initial investigation suggests it was liontaurs that did this. So I have increased guard patrols in the liontaur community to try to tamp things down and keep the peace. They have strict orders not to harass or antagonize the liontaurs, but, well, it’s hard to get the guards to show restraint in the face of folks like Juran.”

“Sharing information? Sure. But you have not been very forthright with what you’ve found. Perhaps if you tell me more about your findings, I might have more information for you.”

As he speaks, he moves closer to you all and a bit away from his desk, which is now behind him.

"Actually, the only question you asked related to Yesia was whether we knew her. The rest was ill-founded innuendo that was beneath our dignity to respond to, not direct questioning. Yet good Kiwina here has answered your question, saying quite truthfully that we did not know Yesia, and we arrived here after her death. As noted, Gadin was with us the entire way from the city to here. Many saw us arrive, and I think it clear that had we arrived earlier, our presence would have been noticed by many. Of course you know all this, because Gadin reported it to the guards when we first arrived. So let me add some new knowledge, in the spirit of cooperation. There have been deaths of both Minotaurs and liontaurs. Someone has been trying to cover up some of the deaths, and the deaths have not been properly reported to the Duke. You say the Horned Skulls have just recently started operating here, and the murders also began recently. That is a coincidence that might be worth examining more closely to see whether there is a connection. The liontaurs are discontented by their segregation, but most don’t otherwise seem to have a grudge against Minotaurs. Heck, they came here in the first place, which suggests a certain open-mindedness. Did they give you some other reason to treat them with such suspicion and divisiveness? So now I have shared with you, what more can you add to this case, since we seem to be working it together? Who leads the Horned Society? Are they from around here or recent arrivals? What might prompt liontaurs and Minotaurs to work together to silence Yesia? Where are the bodies of the murdered liontaurs? What else have you learned?"

Kiwina plainly states that he has evidence to show that Yesia fought both liontaurs and minotaurs, and that your group was still on the road with Gadin when she died.
Falco confirms what Kiwina said, stating that should be enough unless Ranter wants to use magic to divine more.
Rolth , it seems, has had about enough of any implication that the Petals may have something to do with Yesia’s death, and he let’s Ranter know. He shares what you know about the deaths and attempts to cover them up. Then he asks some questions of his own.
Mak gets a good read on Ranter. Highlight to display spoiler: {(Yes, in this case the one roll will cover both.) Mak knows that this Ranter would hold a great deal of local authority, and would likely be appointed by and answer primarily to the Duke. He would probably be more powerful than (or at least equal to) any local administrative authority. He likely acts as judge and jury for most offences.}
Tzak and Angus remain quiet as they watch and listen.

Ranter gestures and asks that you close the door.

”Look, I don’t suspect you in Yesia’s murder, and the fact that you are here with her friend Gadin is additional proof. But it is my job to investigate all avenues, and you are all new here. While I do wish that the Purple Duke would send word or some sort of papers when he grants authority to such as yourselves, … well… paperwork is not really his way. But I do believe you.

“The Horned Society? It’s been here for some time - long before we had a liontaur community in our town. But the Horned Skulls are more recent, and it’s not clear who their leaders are.

“In addition to trying to keep the peace here, I have been investigating Yesia’s death. There have been other acts of violence and rumors of missing liontaurs. Yesia wanted to speak to me about something she had uncovered. She caught me in the tavern, the other night but I told her to come back in the morning - that whatever she needed could wait. She didn’t seem afraid - more determined than anything else, but she did want to speak to me alone. My brother, Rashel, told me that she’s just new and that she was just being paranoid about something. Clearly she was onto something.

“Other murders? What do you mean? Show me this proof? If what you say is true, this problem is bigger than I thought.”

Do you show him Yesia’s ledgers? If you do Highlight to display spoiler: {Ranter reviews the ledgers and is very concerned. If you share the names you have, he will tell you those are liontaur names and that an attempted cover up makes this much more serious. He returns the ledger and papers to you.}

“You know, perhaps you could help me. Well, and advance your appointed task. Lotan lives with his family in the house outside where Yesia died. He was reluctant to talk to my officers - said he didn’t want to get involved. But maybe he would be more open with you. Maybe someone not connected to our town might get more from him. Or maybe not - he’s hard to read.

“Now, if you’ll excuse me I have matters I need to look into. And please let me know if anyone, particularly my guards, give you any trouble. I respect your authority here, and welcome your help. So I also ask that you respect mine and not make any rash decisions.”

(For what it’s worth, you’ve handled Ranter well thus far.)

Gadin seems anxious to go.

If you leave, Ranter asks that you send in the two guards you came here with.

It occurs to Tsak that it was quite the coincidence that Yesia was killed the morning before she was due to discuss her concerns with Ranter. Mak had some small knowledge of politics and as part of his studies he knew a little about the taurian hierarchy, so he took Ranter at his word. To do otherwise would require a lot more authority than this group had been granted. If they found out Ranter was involved in any of this, their only recourse would be to take it to the Duke himself. Confronting Ranter in his own domain would be a mistake. Mak resolved to share this knowledge with the petals once they were safely out of earshot.

OOC: Assume Mak tells you this once we leave. Also, while it might seem like common sense, Mak did get it with a successful KS check, so it might not actually be common knowledge.

Satisfied that Ranter was on their side, or at the least not against them, Mak closed the door and leaned against it to listen to what the taur had to say. Once Ranter was done speaking Mak motioned to Gadin that they should wait outside. The gesture was really more to calm Gadin than anything else as Mak could see the taur was uncomfortable in these surroundings.

OOC: Mak exits the room with Gadin.

Elyas hands Ranter the ledger, as there is general consent to show the ledgers and other papers to Ranter.

Hmmm. It seems I need to pay Lukran a visit. If you’ll excuse me…

As he leaves, he frowns a bit at Gadin, and then barks at the two guards you came in with to wait for him in his office. The two guards go in.

Where to now? You could simply wait here with the guards for Ranter to return from down the hall. You could follow Ranter as he goes to speak to Lukran down the hall. You could go try to talk to Juran in the cell behind the building, though you’re not exactly high on his list right now. You could meet with Lotan, as Ranter suggested that perhaps you’d have better luck getting information from him than Ranter did.

DM Mark - Lotan's House
Thursday August 22nd, 2019 7:58:40 PM

There is general agreement that the Petals should go talk to Lotan.
Rolth keeps a sharp eye out as you go, and asks Gadin about the Horned Skull.
Mak tries to make small talk with Gadin to put him at ease, but realizes that he must’ve said something wrong to the minotaur. Still, Gadin doesn’t actually seem to be upset for long.
Kiwina says that whoever broke into Yesia’s office must’ve known the layout.
Falco hangs back a bit, hoping to go unnoticed. While his small stature helps with this, he finds he is quite the object of interest. They don’t get too many walking bird-men in these parts.
Elyas and Angus walk along with the others, as does Tzak with his cat close at his heels.

The sun is low in the sky as the Petals make their way to Lotan’s house. It’s been a long day.

Gadin responds to Rolth’s question, “The Horned Skull? Well I didn’t really hear about them before the liontaurs arrived. I think their hearts are in the right place but I hear they can be a little rough. They take a dim view of liontaurs moving in here, I mean they do have their own island and all. I’m not sure why they even want to move here to Greenfell.”

As you walk through town, you get the usual stares - your group is anything but usual. You pass a number of shops and establishment, and can smell wood fires and some food cooking here and there. You see an occasional liontaur or human seemingly moving with a purpose. You pass a pair of dwarves involved in some sort of argument. There is a small shop with a female minotaur beckoning you in to see her charms to ward off evil spirits.

This is the home against which Yesia's body was found.

You knock on the door, and you see drapes move in a window next to the door as a minotaur peeks out. The door opens, and a large, strong minotaur stands before you. He has brown-grey fur and wears the sturdy worn clothing of a laborer. Behind him a bit you see a young minotaur girl peering at you. “Yes. What is it you want?”

Rolth is thoughtful and careful in addressing this gruff Lotan. As he does so, he can see Lotan’s features soften a bit.
Tzak watches Rolth’s back, making sure nothing untoward happens to the liontaur.
Elyas is distracted, wondering about the ledger, the names, and Ranter - and wondering how it all fits together.
Kiwina is wonders what Gadin is up to. As he watches, he sees Gadin pull back into the shadows, out of the line of sight of Lotan, though Kiwina can still see that he’s standing there.

Angus notices someone following the Petals, and tries to hide.
Falco sees the minotaur following you as well, as stops to confront the creature.
Mak lags back and tries to engage a random minotaur on the street, all the while keeping an eye on the minotaur that he saw following the petals.

The random minotaur Mak picked as a diversion is wearing work clothes, marked here and there with wax and soot. Mak prattles on a bit to the now confused minotaur about guard duties and responsibilities, and finally the man loudly insists that Mak has clearly mistaken him for someone else, that he cares not a whit about what guards do, and storms off.

Meanwhile, the minotaur that was following your group stops when Falco stares him down. Or stares him up in this case. He glances at Angus (who seems to have been noticed) and moves away from your group. Mak can see all of this occur.

At Lotan’s house, Rolth’s honeyed words seem to have an effect. Lotan invites you into his home. It is a simple home . You are invited into a main room, which has a table and chairs, a fireplace (with cooking pot) and a surface for food preparation on it. There is an upstairs as well. You smell good food cooking.

He introduces his wife Rochelle, and his two daughters Herun and Ashfia. Rochelle and her daughters offer you water or beer. Lotan gestures to chairs and pull over a bench, all of which are rather high for your, but you make do.

Rolth mentions “the recent troubles,” and says what he knows may be “key to keeping the recent violence from reaching out and touching someone you care about.”

Lotan says, “Aye, you must mean that poor girl that died. Terrible thing, that. We heard a struggle, but it was fairly late at night. Like I told Ranter, I figured it was probably just a scuffle of a few drunks, so forgot about it.”

"Look, I understand why you might not want to tell all to that stuffed shirt, Ranter, but I think the Duke suspects some outside influence is at play, and that's why he sent us to help. And it was at that poor girls request, which suggests that someone is trying to cover up what's going on here. We've already investigated the scene and know that there was a pretty brutal fight. And drunks don't typically fight with lethal weapons and the clash of blades. Are you sure that you can't remember something more if you think back really hard? Rolth’s sharp eye notes that Lotan’s upper arm is bandaged beneath his work shirt. He also has a scrape on his leg just above his hoof.

Lotan looks your group over appraisingly, seeming to decide something in his mind.

It’s about this time that Rochelle steps forward. She looks at her husband and then back to the Petals as she says, “I do recall that there was some noise, as Lotan said. I was up late cooking at the time, preparing food for the following morning. I … I thought I even heard someone cry out for help, but I thought little of it at the time. It wasn’t a woman’s voice you know, and there are often noises around here at night. Oh dear, I’d hate to think it was someone associated with the death of that poor girl.” She frowns a bit, thinking more after she speaks.

Then Herun speak up, ”I heard a noise. It woke me up. Ashfia woke for a moment too but went back to sleep. When I went to the window, I saw some men run into the bushes towards the road.”

Little Ashfia says that she did wake up from something that night.

Finally, Lotan move over to Elyas, pulling him aside and in a low voice he says, [b]”Look, I could tell that the sound was more than a bunch of drunks fighting. I served in the Duke’s army, and I know the sound of steel being drawn to fight and kill. The former Duke that is, not this current Dule Purple as he likes to call himself. Lotan looked about to respond to Rolth and Elays, but his eyes flash with anger and his nostrils flare at Kiwina’s words. He draws himself up to his full height as he faces the centaur. ”What did you say? Exactly what are you suggesting centaur? Do you come into my home and question my honor? I’ll tell you what centaur, you want to discuss this further? Then I challenge you to a Kayleb. Let us see if a centaur has any honor before I speak further with you about my people.”

If you ask what a Kayleb is, Lotan will reply that it is a challenge of combat where each is equally armed and armored.

Lotan’s family is silent at this.

Kiwina does not allow himself to get worked up. "If you think honor is at stake for hoping you don't think like a murderer, then I doubt we'll see eye to eye on much. I understood the Kayleb to be somewhat more complicated than simply a fight. Is it merely one on one combat? What rules must I abide by? Which of us decides the weapons? Are there witnesses? Judges? Does it happen now, or do we set a time?" Perhaps thinking through the minutia will calm the minotaur.

Elyas does what he can to smooth over a situation that he thinks went sideways.
Kiwina also seeks to calm things down by asking questions about this Kayleb.

Lotan’s anger seems to settle into a resolve once he challenged Kiwina to a Kayleb. ”No centaur, it was as much what you said as the fact that your felt a need to draw out a quiet conversation I was trying to spare my family from.

“But you have questions. A Kayleb is a combat to settle a matter, and it can be as complicated or as simple those involved wish it to be. I prefer things simple.

“Your friends may not assist in this combat - it is between two people. Arms and armor should be equally matched, as should relative ability. You look capable, your weapons and armor look to have some use and you move as one accustomed to combat. I can agree to go without armor whilst you wear your leathers. As for weapons, I can wield a short sword whilst you use a blade of roughly equal length. Or we can use clubs if you wish. Typically, a neutral person would make sure matters remain fair. I can get my neighbor, but if you wish, I will agree that this one…”
He points at Elyas. ”... can serve. Or both. As for the time, I suggest now. The light is fading outside, but we can bring lights if you wish.

“But the fundamental question remains - do you accept the Kayleb?”

The bartender in The Drinking Horn takes two of the gold coins, leaving the rest on the bar. He pours a round of drinks. There are a few grunts of acceptance as the drinks are passed out to the dozen or so minotuars there. One minotaur in the back, the one that Mak’s quarry was speaking with, inclines his head as he says, “The Purple Duke pays his people well. It is kind of you to share the Duke’s largess with those of us that are so far away from his reach.”

Elyas can see that a minotaur slips out of the tavern and heads down a road toward the center of Greenfell.

If successful, he will try to get them to talk about whatever they were holding back on during the earlier conversation.

Mak had tried to befriend the taurs here and in his estimation he'd done a poor job of it. So he finished the beer quickly and turned to leave. He strategically left the gold on the bar top in the hopes that would distract them enough that he'd make the door. As he walked calmly to the exit, Mak's hand slid across his chest and rested lightly upon his bow then slid down his side where he hooked a thumb in his belt next to his sword.

Once in the street he remained calm and walked casually back the way he had come, but once he had a few feet between him and the building he brought his bow around and held it in his hand while he watched carefully at his back for pursuit. Strangely enough his limp was gone as he made his way from the area...

"Do you wish to be limited to weapons, or to use hoof and horn as well? More importantly, would battle to first blood be sufficient to satisfy honor? I would be happy to use two saps. I also agree to having Elyas and your neighbor ensure things remain fair."

Kiwina has no intention of killing Lotan, and would prefer to use two saps than to be forced into a different weapon and take a penalty to cause non-lethal damage. If the minotaur argues against saps, Kiwina will willingly pit sap against sword and consider it fair since the fellow has offered to let Kiwina keep his armor. If Lotan argues against two weapons, Kiwina would suggest that a second non-lethal weapon is part of fair play when pitted against a lethal one.

OOC: Is there a penalty for causing non-lethal damage with a natural weapon?

Lotan snorts slightly.

"You may keep your two weapons if you so choose... however it will be difficult to draw blood with them, if that is truly when you feel honour is satisfied. If you win, you will have proven your honour, and I will help you. If I win, you will no longer be welcome in my house."

He points to an open area in front of his house.

"I will get my neighbour and return here be prepared."

He then goes off and returns with another Minotaur, who has a hard, cold, unreadable face who stands watch, and speaks in short, gruff sentences.

"Ready?" he says as Lotan takes up a spot about thirty feet from Kiwina. "To first blood. Begin." ((OoC: First blood will be to whoever gets to half health first.))

Lotan's sword flashes out with great speed and force, and strikes Kiwina twice for a total of 22 damage.

Lotan's sword flashes out again dealing a further 23 damage to Kiwina, as Kiwina is bloodied, the neighbour speaks up.

"He is an excellent fighter, and he has his honor." Kiwina speaks to whatever crowd is there -- the neighbor at least, and including Lotan if he hasn't stalked off yet. "Which makes the case for thinking his failure to help Yesia was cowardice stronger, in my opinion." He then drops his voice, although folks can still hear him if they're listening. "Come on, guys. Rolth gladly steps out of this ridiculous house of stubborn fools, leaving a direct path to Lotan, but retorts, "Your challenge and words were directed solely at Kiwina, not at the group of us, so don't pretend like your little dance-fight somehow compels the rest of us. Nor did I compel your family to stay and talk; they chose to stay when asked politely. You ought to try it sometime. I didn't come here to start a 'beef' with you, but if you think honor is satisfied by keeping quiet about what you know of a murder, then you have a seriously distorted sense of honor. Or 'honour', as you so quaintly call it. When you finally get over your fit of pique and recall what true honour is, rather than false pride, you know where to find us. We'll be happy to listen and take action as appropriate. Now, good day to you, 'sir'." Lotan just fixes Rolth with an even glare.

"You are outsiders, who come in asking questions about something you have NO business investigating, the town guard will deal with it as appropriate. The Kayleb was to settle whether you have honour, and instead of waiting for it's outcome, you decided to AGAIN take matters into your own hands, asking questions, without even waiting to see if we WANTED to help you. You come barging in here and demand that I bend to your will without ever bothering to ask about what we want... then you accuse me of having only my Pride, and no honour."

He shakes his head, anger clearly welling up, but he's not reacting with it. "You have done nothing but cause trouble, and shown no respect for our ways, then verbally abuse me for doing what I need to do to protect my family. You are not welcome in my house, and I will warn you, if you keep acting this way, you will not be welcome in the town before long. You have shown us no respect."

He's agreeable to visiting Yesia's place. "But perhaps we should find Gadin first. We'll need him to show us where we're going, and I want to know why he didn't stick around back there. He's also our best bet to tell us just how badly we insulted Lotan."

Back at the tavern he will grab an ale, some dinner and head to bed.
He wants to have a clear head in the morning.

Falco is getting very frustrated and expresses it to the group.

"What are these people doing? Acting like fools it seems and trying to dredge up old issues in the process. Then you question their beliefs and they either ignore you or want to fight you. Just stupid, very stupid. People are dead and they worry about racial divides. Bahhh... best to just go to sleep and look at it fresh in the morning."

Mak laughed in Rolth's face. "If you had been paying attention you'd have seen the minotaur following us as I did. I hung back and followed him, though I admit what I learned was probably of little value. I followed the taur to another tavern, likely the only other one in town, I looked. Once there he met with some others and spoke too quietly for me to hear, but the entire place is aligned against outsiders...dangerously so. I suspect it might be a meeting place for this horned society. The sign out front named the place 'The Drinking Horn'. As for that any random drunk comment, I think perhaps the stress of the situation is getting the best of you and I'll ignore it this time."

Elyas will also pipe in about the curfew
"We are appointed to investigate a murder. does that not give us any leeway in this curfew situation? the more we can find out now the better. I would hate to finally be shown to Yesia's house tomorrow only to find that the guily party returned and covered their tracks. or burned the whole house down. or killed someone else.

He shakes his head and studies Gadin a little more closely. [sense motive=18]

"I thought you were in a hurry to get this done? you came running to us, had us march through the night to get here as quickly as possible, and are now trying to get us to go slower. we need you to help us find answers, not keep running off when we could use your help navigating the politics here, and not trying to keep us from seeing the house that we have been asking to see all day!

Gadin looks at Mak with a 'really' face, completely sarcastic.

"I'm going to pretend you didn't ask me that question." After a moment he seems to think better than it. "It applies to you because it's the law."

He turns to Kiwina.

"I didn't disappear, I was just watching from a discrete distance. His neighbours will believe he is honourable, he allowed you to complete a Kayleb, which he won fairly, with not one, but two overseers. Looking over Yesia's house may be a wise move, but it will have to wait until tomorrow I'm afraid."

He sighs.

"Rolth, the Horned Skull are..." his voice gets lower, more conspiratorial as he speaks, and he quickly glances around to make sure no one can hear him. "A group of Taur who oppose the blending of the Tauric races. They want them to be kept separate..."

He shakes his head at Falco's outburst.

"How would you feel if a group of outsiders came into your home, and insulted your beliefs and traditions and almost accused you of being involved in murders? I don't think you'd take too kindly to it... perhaps bringing you all here was a mistake. I was hoping the outside influence would allow you to look at things differently, but you seem to insist on going around and antagonising everyone rather than showing respect for how things are done here..."

Gadin looks at Mak, returning a no doubt even glare.

"The town guard. However, if you get thrown out by the LEGAL enforcers here, even the Duke wouldn't take kindly to your inability to work with them. Talking about the fact you are here at the Dukes behest will help you, but only if you use it subtly rather than demanding everyone bend to your will simply because the Duke sent you."

Gadin looks at Elyas.

"I appreciate your words Elyas, and yes, this does need to be dealt with. However you must realise that you have not been appointed by those that enforce the laws in this town... breaking the laws is just one way I am trying to help you navigate the politics. You are all outsiders to these people, they have a distrust of them, as I'm sure most small communities do... you must try to get them on side if you want them to work with you. That means listening to them, and respecting our Traditions and our Beliefs, like the Kayleb. Not insulting us because you don't agree, or insinuating that one of us may be in on the murders simply because we keep to our Traditions and Beliefs..."

Gadin shakes his head.

"I apologise if you felt I abandoned you, but Lotan would not have appreciated my presence, what the Kayleb was declared, there was nothing I could do. It's a ritual with much weight to our people, and must be respected. If there is a disagreement, it can be settled by Kayleb, and if things are discussed before, for example a trade of information or anything along those lines, it MUST NOT be revisited why the Kayleb is underway, as the Kayleb is deciding it."

He pauses.

"It's akin to discussing with a merchant a deal where you wish to purchase some of his goods, then while he's out send another member of your team in to get a shop assistant to give those same goods at a reduced price, greater than what the merchant would have allowed. It's seen as disrespectful, insulting and more than a little underhanded. Ignoring the outcome of Kayleb is the same, or trying to deal with something while the Kayleb is also trying to deal with it I mean."

He sighs.

"Get some rest, we can get an early start in the morning, unless you have further questions for me before bed?"

The bed rest did wonders for the archer and he woke with all the miscellaneous bumps and bruises gone. He pulled out his wrinkled clothing and shook it out while he availed himself of the wash basin. As he washed he rubbed at a scab or two where he'd been scratched by a goblin and was pleased to see pink skin underneath. After using a brush on his boots and clothing to get the dust from them he redressed and headed to the common room where the others waited.

His limp had returned this morning as it always did after a night's time to stiffen so he was using his cane. It was a simple baton looking thing with a military seal atop it and looked like Mak must have used it sparingly. He carried or wore the rest of his gear since he didn't trust that it would be safe if left unattended.

Mak wondered if he'd just take some time and let it finish healing the pain would subside, but he was always on the move these past few years and the moves he was forced to take in the casino and again on the road with the goblins had aggravated the injury.

As for Gadin's explanation the night before, Mak wasn't buying it. Clearly these minotaurs were so deeply into their bigoted ways they couldn't see past them. Mak wondered if the entire island was like this. Curfews, laws designed to restrict "outsiders", and a disdain for proper hospitality were something Mak was used to in war time. This was peace time and he felt it uncalled for, but without the support of his companions he kept those thoughts mostly to himself.

What he did relate to the group was that after a quick inventory, and in spite of his quiver being full as well as an extra bundle of arrows in his pack, he wanted to purchase some additional arrows along the way to Yesia's house.

Elyas wakes up ready to go, but he is having trouble not being frustrated with the lack of help from the community. he knows what it is like to be an outsider, being a human growing up around Taurs, but this seems excessive to him. he hopes that today they break things open a bit.

There has to be something here they are afraid of. maybe people know what happened but are afraid of the person or people that did it. it's not normal for people to be this resistant to an investigation into a murder like this. maybe we need to make enough noise to get attention from this hidden presence and draw it out. Elyas comments to Falco over breakfast. Any ideas?

Gadin nods at Rolth's questions.

"Yes as far as I'm aware she lived by herself."

As you discuss going to the Drinking Horn, Gadin looks genuinely shocked, even to the point he stops moving forward and just stands still, as anger washes over him.

"After all I said last night, you still insist on provoking the people? Why do you bother? You have no interest in getting to the bottom of this. Nearly everything you have done you have offended people and not apologised or taken any responsibility. You have shown absolutely no respect. Even if our ways ARE strange to you that doesn't mean you can enforce your attitudes on us. The Duke hasn't been bothered with how we run things and neither should you. I understand you want to get to the bottom of this but you are now intending to ACTIVELY turn the community against you. Can you think of any more certain way to ensure that anyone who might have been willing to help you will now ignore you and resist you? For just one moment, think about how you would feel if a group of various different races turned up in your hometown and started ignoring all the rules and demanding things of you. If you really want to purposefully cause trouble, I can't stop you, but no one will help you if you decide to do it. Eventually you will just be thrown out of the village, and the murder will never get solved. I'm certain the Duke would not be happy about that."

He seems adamant that you may need to rethink your plan, but it is still up to you.

But when I suggested that you and we talk to the liontaurs about what it takes to fit in around here, you just said that the liontaur have spent their time learning, and hurried home. We've seen some of what the liontaurs have learned -- Elyas was able to stop that. But it really undercuts your message about fitting in when you don't help us learn how. So before we go anywhere else, why don't you tell us how our plan is likely to be received? I gather you do not object to a visit to Yesia's house, where we don't expect to run into others. Or we could go back to the liontaurs, who -- along with you -- might be able to explain things in ways more familiar to us."

"I will give you some advice, respect the people, don't treat them as beneath you just because you believe something different, even if you disagree with their beliefs. The town does want this solved, they just want you to show them respect. Don't act without thinking, listen to what people have to say and try to realise that just because there's friction and people don't like that, it doesn't mean that everyone is nasty and out to get you. Try not be so adversarial unless you know the person has done something wrong. Try to make friends rather than relying on 'The Duke sent us' to force co-operation. In the same way you've been resistant on listening to what others say to you, they will be resistant to what you want to talk about if the whole reason you're talking is because the Duke sent you."

He smiles wistfully.

"I know some of our beliefs are backwards, I just ask that you don't belittle them and understand they have meaning to us."

Falco just shakes his head at the speech thinking it is just the group being forced to accept stupidity. Growing up a small halfling in the land of taurs he was lucky to be mostly ignored though he still faced his fair share of stupidity for being different. I thought this all ended with the races coming together, idealistic halfling brain I guess.

He adds nothing to the conversation just goes with the flow this morning.

About time Elyas thinks as they approach Yesia's house. Elyas is still very concerned that with the space of several days after the murder event, the guilty party has had plenty of time to go to the house and take anything that could link them to what happened or give clues as to what Yesia did to get on someone's bad side.

Keep an eye out as we approach. before we walk in to the house lets look around the outside for signs of others coming in uninvited. I can't imagine we will be the first ones to enter the house since Yesia's murder.

Mak replied to Kiwina..."Innocent is stretching it a bit and I won't claim that, but I was being law abiding and only following he who followed us. It was made clear to me by their posture and attitude that to stay was going to invite being ejected in a most unpleasant manner. I elected to save the town some clean up expense by not slaying them all out of hand."

That last was said with a jesting tone. His expression clearly indicated that any clean up would be him being mopped up from the floor of the place.

"I've only been here a short time. Is this the attitude I should expect away from the port cities? If so that does not bode well for travellers coming inland from abroad and it should be made known to any that travel inland to avoid the area."

Elyas Highlight to display spoiler: {You don't spot anything untoward following you.}

Gadin leads you through the streets to a house with a couple of guards outside, after a quick word from Gadin, and looking you up and down, they part to let you in.

The "house" such that it is, is only actually a single room, with a bed in one corner, a desk in another and cooking pot against the opposite wall with a chimney to let the smoke out.

On the desk are several papers and documents, and there a few books on the bed too. There are a couple of chairs by the fire, also with papers on them, other than these features the room is very simple and spartan.

What do you want to investigate first?

One of the guards smiles and swells up with pride at Rolth's words.

Rolth - Highlight to display spoiler: {The bed itself seems empty, so does the mattress, however under the pillow there is a dagger a simple enough blade, nothing fancy about it. You suspect it would have been for self defence. The bed is designed for one.}

Falco - Highlight to display spoiler: {There's nothing really to disturb, it's organised chaos, but looking through the books you quickly realise some of the papers are death certificates, and the books are the books that Yesia would keep the records of. Every single one of these, without fail, is of a Liontaur or a Centaur. Not one is of a Minotaur.}

Gadin nods, entering the building at Elyas' command. "My gosh... talk about bringing your work home with you. I would say I'm not sure how I can be of service, other than to suggest looking through the papers. Yesia was a bit of a pack rat... and liked to keep things in a mess, though she always knew where everything was.

He turns to Rolth.

"To answer your earlier question Rolth, the man who did the job Yesia did before her passed away in his sleep. He was very VERY old, and we had expected it for some time, Yesia apprenticed under him."

Tsak isn't sure if his effort at diplomacy will succeed or cause a riot. He tries not to fidget too much as he waits to find out.

Once back with the Petals he remarks Well if the Minotaurs won't tell us who is in their secret club, and going to their favorite tavern is out, then the answer lies either with the Liontaurs (who won't thank us after our last visit) or the Captain of the Guard, who should surely know something.
