Vamir looks at the lake and shakes his head at the oily skin on the water. "It would mean leaving one of us isolated on each side but Zaita can expand to large size. If someone can fly or walk on walls we could use her like a boat and float, and be pulled across." Vamir moves his dancing lights over the water and peers intently at the surface.

Owen responds to the others: "I can still Spider Climb across if need be. Let's see what Armand's light stone does, first."
DM Jeremy Battle Map Friday August 23rd, 2019 5:30:13 AM
Atlas dreams of monster coming out of subterranean lakes, and decides to throw a rock into the lake, but before he does, he has the idea of having someone cast light on it first.
Neshi is concerned that the oily film maybe flammable, and asks Atlas if he would like some stone skin.
Armand takes Atlas's suggestion and casts light on a rock then throws it roughly into the middle of the lake. He cast detect magic and does all he can to analyze the lake.
Elyngael asks if Owen can spider climb over for a look see, and offers him barkskin.
Vamir suggests using Ziata as a boat, if a spider walker or flyer could drag them along.
Owen lets everyone know that he is capable of spider walking if needed, but would like to see what Armand's stone reveals first.
Armand's spell informs him that the lake, well more of a pond or very large puddle really, is as mundane as a oily, nasty pool of water can be. His rock shines brightly as it sails through the air, until, "PLOP", it hits the oily surface. The rocks light is instantly diminished as it passes through the oily film, and sinks into the murky water, due to the nastiness of the water and oil, but it still provides enough light to reveal that the water is only around 2 ft deep in the center. As the rock disturbs the surface of the pond, it releases the lovely stench of stagnant water. Please no peeing in the pool, it gross enough already. Then again, maybe that might improve it who knows?

Atlas nods in approval. "I think we can save on the spells and just head across. It will mean wet feet for most of us, but we'll live."
He then looks over to Vamir, "Your cauldron can float like a boat? That's going to become useful at some point!"
Pausing before he takes a step in he turns to El, "Do you want to go first? Otherwise I'm happy to go."
Finally, as he takes his first steps into the water (before or after El, depending on her response) he remembers Neshi's question, "Neshi, I love that spell! However, I'm not sure if I'm going to need it in the next hour or two. Can you be prepared to cast it at the first sight of something dangerous? More dangerous than those puddings, that would have been a waste."

But I think we should take the precaution of roping ourselves off to each other. We have enough rope to put so that we can space things out and the lead person can be on the other side before the last person has to leave this side of the shore. I think if Elyngael and Atlas lead and Brawn anchors we should be able to cross with someone strong as safety on both ends." So saying Armand takes out his rope again and offers to start tying off with the others and the other rope.

Elyngael likes the idea of the rope as a safeguard, leave it to Armand to always think with caution. "Atlas, I'll go first because I can't see around or over you, and you can keep the rope steady. Brawn will sound a warning if anything approaches from behind," Elyngael ties the rope around her waist and steps into the fetid water.

Vamir nods in agreement with tying off to each other. "I have no idea how to swim if this goes south. Zaita please keep us informed if anything comes within your range."
DM Jeremy Battle Map d4=2 ; Monday August 26th, 2019 6:17:12 AM
Atlas suggests saving spells for the future, and just walking across the nasty water. He makes a mental note of Ziata's boat option, and let's Vamir know that that could come in handy in the future. He then asks if Elyngael would like to lead or if he should, and turns down Neshi's offer at the moment, but would greatly appreciate it in the event of a fight.
Neshi prepares to cross the nasty water while nodding his understanding to Atlas. he hopes that there aren't any surprises waiting for them as they cross.
Armand agrees with just walking across, but suggests roping off just in case, with Elyngael and Atlas in the lead, and Brawn in the rear. He then gets out his rope.
Elyngael likes the rope idea, and lets Atlas know that it would probably better if she went first. She lets everyone know that Brawn will let them know if something attacks from the rear. Then she ropes off and steps into the water.
Vamir likes the rope idea a lot, as he doesn't know how to swim, he asks Ziata to keep them informed if anything comes within range of her senses.
Everyone is on board with just walking across the lovely swimming hole, and so they tie themselves together and Elyngael leads the way. Everyone should make a DC 15 reflex save to avoid slipping on the slimy rock surface that is the floor. Failure means you are covered in the nasty water, and must make a DC15 fort save, or be sickened for 2 rounds.
The Wardens pass through the waters unmolested, and as the passage climbs up and away from the putrid pool, it widens into a open cavern, and you come across a pile of rotting corpses. Closer investigation convinces you that these are some of the missing townspeople. In the pile, you find the body of a Halfling boy that fits the description of Tristan. you also hear the sound of steel on stone, as if someone is mining up ahead. The area is dimly lit by everburning torches spaced throughout the cavern.
There is a new map link in the header, you all should have editing rights to move your markers and such. Also I forgot to give experience for the stone puddings so everyone gets 8000xp.

Atlas decides to go for a swim, but remembers to keep his mouth shut, unfortunately for those around him, he now smells like the foul water they just passed through. Upon seeing the bodies he vows to make the cause of the deaths pay for their actions, and asks Neshi for some stone skin to help do just that. He then asks Elyngael to scout ahead.
Neshi passes through the water unscathed, and shares Atlas sentiment when seeing the bodies. He then casts stone skin on Atlas.
Armand checks over the bodies in hopes of determining how long they have been dead, and he draws the conclusion that the deaths seem to have come at different times, ranging from a week and a half to only a couple of days. He then casts bless on his friends.
Owen makes it through the nasty water like a champ. While Armand is trying to discover time of death, Owen decides to see if he can figure out the cause of death, wondering what kind of beast could, or would do this. As he examines the wounds, he sees no wounds that appear to be made by weapons, natural or manufactured, instead some of the victims seem to have died from exhaustion, while the rest seem to have been crushed. The bodies that appear to have been crushed also are covered in rock particulate, and he concludes that they probably died in some sort of rock fall.
Vamir decides to join Atlas for a swim, unfortunate for him, he forgot to keep his mouth shut, and ends up losing his lunch. Like his swimming partner, he is now a very smelly individual. He is disturbed by the pile of corpses (who wouldn't be) and asks Ziata to keep them informed. Ziata apologizes for the short range of her senses, but vows to do her best.
Elyngael's eyes shed a tear for the victims, and especially for the child. The sight of the carnage steels her resolve, and like Atlas see promises to make those responsible pay for their actions. She manages to creep forward far enough to just begin to see around the corner. she can't see much, but she does see 2 individuals that have the appearance of townspeople swinging pick axes and shovels, as though they where mining. Elyngael's current line of sight wouldn't allow her to see the enemy yet, Brawn tries to follow his master, but luckily Elyngael notices in time to stop the wolf from giving away their presence.
With steeled resolve our heroes, as one, have decided to bring justice for the unnecessary, and tragic loss of life, the only thing left is to wait and see how they accomplish such a noble feat!

Neshi suggests he use his deep slumber spell. Figuring, even if it only works on the townspeople, at least they would be out of the way.
Owen likes Neshi's plan. He goes invisible and prepares to use dispel magic to counter spell anything the duergar cleric may cast.
Armand as usual acts as a voice of reason. He asks if anyone knows anything about duergar that may be advantages to them. He also suggests taking the time to apply some more buff spells to themselves and offers several. He also asks if Owen can take anyone else along in his invisibility field, and asks him about using an illusion to mask their presence. He then goes into buff casting mode.

Atlas know that a good why to deal with duergar is to use some bright light. and he shares his knowledge about the duergar with the rest of the Wardens. He'll pass on the silence spell if they can do the bright light attack, but will do the silence thing if they don't have the means to produce bright light.
Armand casts a silence spell to buffer against noise so they can plan without having to worry about being overheard, he does have daylight prepared, but it is a touch spell, so he suggest casting it on one of Elyngael's arrows just before she fires it, which would allow everyone to get into position.

Neshi accepts one of Vamir's see invisible spells, then gets himself into position to try to make the duergar take a nap.
Owen gives his thumbs up to Atlas's device prepared to share the same if someone hadn't offered the Intel first. he wonders if he gets to use his see invisibility spell for the first time.
The Wardens make further plans including one that takes advantage of the duergar's light sensitivity. Both Vamir and Owen are prepared to cast see invisibility on the party. and everyone is in position. All that's need now is for the action to begin.

Vamir shakes his head as the Wyvaran rains fire on his comrades and raises his hand, pointing at the wyvaran as he casts Suffocation (Fortitude DC 21 SR 17 ) on it. Vamir hustles to H16 and surveys the scene.
Suffocation: This spell extracts the air from the target's lungs, causing swift suffocation. The target can attempt to resist this spell's effects with a Fortitude save—if he succeeds, he is merely staggered for 1 round as he gasps for breath. If the target fails, he immediately begins to suffocate. On the target's next turn, he falls unconscious and is reduced to 0 hit points. One round later, the target drops to –1 hit points and is dying. One round after that, the target dies. Each round, the target can delay that round's effects from occurring by making a successful Fortitude save, but the spell effect continues for 3 rounds, and each time a target fails his Fortitude save, he moves one step further along the track to suffocation. This spell only affects living creatures that must breathe. It is impossible to defeat the effects of this spell by simply holding one's breath—if the victim fails the initial saving throw, the air in his lungs is extracted.

Neshi laughs at the fire breath then fires off a lighting bolt hitting the blue, green, lavender, and cleric duergar the blue and cleric save for half, but the green and lavender take the full force of the electrical blast
Vamir casts suffocation on the wyvaran, though the dragonoid is able to brush it off and in stead is staggered this round (fort 23) as he gasps for air.
Armand tries casting blindness on the wyvaran but the cleric is able to brush that off as well. (fort 24) (I have been applying the -1, but thanks for the reminder)
Elyngael manages to stick another arrow into the high AC of the Wyvaran turned dragon, however in the form a of a red dragon, the flame from the arrow doesn't seem to have any affect, though the arrow itself does draw blood. Meanwhile Brawn rips a huge hole in the side of the rust monster, but fails to trip it (CMD verse trip is 33).

A fire elemental deals fire damage in addition to damage dealt on a successful hit in melee. Those affected by the burn ability must also succeed on a Reflex save or catch fire, taking the listed damage for an additional 1d4 rounds at the start of its turn. A burning creature can attempt a new save as a full-round action. Dropping and rolling on the ground grants a +4 bonus on this save. Creatures that hit a burning creature with natural weapons or unarmed attacks take fire damage as though hit by the burning creature and must make a Reflex save to avoid catching on fire.

Neshi tries a different tactic and casts black tentacles, and ends up grappling everyone but the fire elemental and the wyvaran/dragon.
With his defenses taking a beating, Atlas goes all slashy/bashy, and drops the green duergar like a bad habit.
Armand casts dismissal, and the fire elemental, failing it’s save vanishes in a puff of smoke, returning to its home plane.
Elyngael continues to struggle to make her arrows stick in the dragon/wyvaran, but Brawn has no problem ripping the blue duergar a new orifice, and knocking him prone at the same time.
Owen casts cone of cold hitting the yellow, lavender, and cleric duergar. The lavender manages to avoid some of the blast, but the yellow and the cleric take the full blast.
Frustrated by failing to suffocate the Wyvaran/Dragon, he tries casting Calcify Touch through his spectral hand, however he fails to make contact. (touch AC 16)
Vamir’s confusion spell continues to work it’s magic as the orange durgar performs a full round attack against the yellow duergar hitting with the first pick attack, and the bite, but missing with the second pick attack, causing a total of 33 damage, while the yellow duergar lashes out at the blue duergar hitting with both pick attacks but missing with the bite, dropping the blue duergar in the mass of tentacles.
Meanwhile, the both lavender duergar and cleric try and fail to break their grapples. Seeing the need of the allies, the Wyvaran/Dragon flies up and casts dispel magic on the black tentacles (rolled a 23) success.

Armand casts searing light on the wyvaran but sadly the spell goes off prematurely, missing it’s mark. He asks if anyone has a way to bring the wyvaran/dragon down, and suggests web. (wyvarans normally have wings and a fly speed, but in the form of a red dragon, he has the dragon’s wings and fly speed, also for the record, the ceiling is only about 15 ft tall so anyone would be able to hit him from the ground, he only used his fly speed because it is faster than his land speed)
Neshi fires off an elemental blast, hitting the orange and yellow duergar full force, but the wyvaran/red dragon seems to brush off almost all the fiery blast [i}the form of the dragon spell, (red dragon) gives fire resistance 30)[/i] The blast fries the yellow duergar and he drops like a lead balloon.
Owen casts fly on Atlas, giving him the speed to engage the wyvaran/red dragon.
Frustrated by how hard a time she has been having with the wyvaran /red dragon, Elyngeal chooses a different target, and turns the orange duergar into a pin cushion. Meanwhile, Brawn engages the duergar cleric, but fails to hit his mark.
Vamir decides to try calcific touch again, and this time he connects. The wyvaran fails his save and is slowed for one round as his dex is damaged. (If a natural 20 is rolled and confirmed on a touch spell it does double damage, like a weapon attack. I’m not sure if that applies to ability damage or not but I don’t see why it wouldn’t so I’m saying it did 4 dex damage instead of 2)
Atlas zooms up and delivers a massive swing with his longsword to the wyvaran/red dragon
The saga of Vamir’s confusion spell continue, though on a lessened scale, as the orange duergar sticks himself with his pick self inflicting 12 damage. Meanwhile the wyvaran/red dragon takes a deep breath and sends forth his fiery breath hitting Atlas, and just missing the orange duergar, for 25 damage (DC21 reflex for half). The duergar cleric takes a five foot step back, and casts flame strike on Brawn causing 30 damage (DC 18 reflex for half) The lavender duergar makes a withdraw action, while dropping his pick and shield and putting his hands above his head in the universal sign of surrender. Seeing the lavender duergar surrender, the three closest townspeople, pick axes in hand run over to subdue him. they don't strike him down, but they make it abundantly clear that they won't hesitate to do so if he tries anything funny.

As the commotion of the battle dies down Armand gathers everyone around for some well needed healing. Slowly also the remaining villagers, some in a state of exhaustion or near starvation, approach. Aided by Vamir most of the Wardens and the villagers are patched up as well as it gets.
One Halfling does not join but instead stumbles over to the piled up carcasses and drops to his knees… tears running down his cheeks he weeps in silence…
Yurneshi nods. The battle went as could be expected and he complements the teamwork.
”The Wardens are going to be fine”, Elyngael smiles as even in this dire situation they keep acting as though this is just business as usual. Already they start thinking about dividing the plunder… Items are claimed and ideas are going back and forth on how to prepare front liners like Owen better. Looks like some items might suit more than just one Warden as Atlas tries hard to hide his excitement behind his most serious look ever when he sees the Mithril Breastplate…
Perhaps this is just ‘business as usual’ for the Wardens… it is not so for the villagers. Armand asks the townspeople what has been going on. Quietly one man answers:
”I was part of the second rescuing team… we thought we heard Tristan calling for help and went deeper into the mine. However soon we were captured... When we got here we found Tristan was already dead… so was his uncle… his father in chains…” he says while he nods over the Halfling kneeled in front of the pile of corpses… Only 5 villagers remain of both rescuing teams… 7 died…
After saying his piece Neshi turns his attention to the remaining Duergar stating Duergar are tender like dwarfs but perhaps a bit spicier… the captured Duergar cowers his head down and crawls backwards…

Atlas begins to sputter as Armand mentions giving the platinum away, but after everyone chimes in he sees the right of it. However, not a moment later Owen mentions the breastplate and he blurts out, "Are you insane? Even in Mithral the thing will weigh you down like a bag of rocks. You stay sa...", at that moment he catches on that Owen is joking and he busts out laughing. "You had me going on that one. Paybacks, that's all I have to say."
Atlas then remembers what Armand was saying about bad cop, but before he can act he sees Neshi approach and start talking about eating the Duergar. Hiding a smile, he approaches, "Come now, that is no way to treat our prisoner...unless he is uncooperative, then I don't see why not. I am getting hungry. Then again, maybe he'll tell us everything, like where they are from, why they need slave labor, and who else might be around. I cannot imagine that they have that far to go before their home. That's a lot of platinum to haul too far."
-------------------------------------------------- ooc: With his check on the Duergar ealier Atlas revealed some of their traits. I assume he also knows that they speak Common, Dwarven, and Underdark. He's speaking Common knowing that, otherwise he switches to Dwarven if for some reason the Duergar doesn't know Common.

DM StevenVdB - Soo many lives were lost… Wednesday September 11th, 2019 9:07:17 AM
With all the goodies around it’s hard not to get carried away. Atlas berates Owen until he realizes the Loremaster is only joking… much to Owen’s amusement.
Meanwhile Armand goes over to the grieving father and kneels beside him.
Joseph Stonewood, the boy Tristan’s father, does not turn his face away from the departed ones as he softly points out everyone…
”Tristan… “, he says holding the young boy’s cold hand, ”There lies my dad, Terryn Wheatflow… he was a great miner in his younger days and knew these tunnels almost blindly. He walked in front of us as we went deeper into the mine… they must have known we were coming… we were shouting for Tristan as we went down… Tristan was still alive!! We heard him… at least so we thought… My dad was the first to die… killed by those foul slavers… oh how must I tell this to my mum and my Susanna… our Tristan… ”
Joseph needs a moment before he can talk more…
Vamir and Elyngael search the area for useful things or perhaps even a short cut to exit from the mine. Soon both of them turn their attention to the captured Duergar and side with Neshi and Atlas. Together they try to decide if the Duergar would taste better boiled, stewed or deep fried. Some tend to favour raw Duergar though… although neither has ever tasted one before.
The 4 villagers do take a step back not sure if the Wardens come to rescue or eat them…
At the other end of the cave Joseph speaks more to Armand : ”The old Gerard Forestworn came with the first rescuing team… he was our town’s lumberjack making sure our miners had logs to dig ever deeper. Sadly his son and daughter joined the second team, Herald did not survive but I see his daughter Amelia did.” Indeed it seems Amelia Forestworn stands with the 4 survivors… ”When Herald and Amelia were captured and brought here they saw old Gerard dead… Herald was enraged and tried to attack that Dragon thing… all in vein… The twins Olor and Rolo Hardglow were also in the first group. They were both old miners with my father. From the first team only Baro Cleves over there and myself survived… Baro joined me knowing his daughter Lili also played that stupid game to go into the mine alone… sigh…
It seems Edmund’s father Bill and older sister Pim felt the same way… both came down the mine with the second rescuing party. They were captured with the second group and were also put to work… they tried to escape… they didn’t go far… Pim recently started working the fields with her father… she had plans to bring some prosperity back to our town. Pim was a wonderful and smart young woman… she had all her life still ahead of her… It’s good to see Miss Mis Dustgem survived… when the mine was still prosperous she had a fine jewelry shop. Sadly she had to close down… Him I don’t know… “ Joseph concludes as he points out one scruffy looking man standing with the 4 survivors.
Soo many lives were lost…

Atlas then heads around the bend to see what Armand is up to. He pauses, not wanting to interrupt the conversation. The losses they have suffered goes straight to his core and his shoulders slump. However, upon hearing that someone is unknown he decides to investigate. He walks over to the group containing the man that was pointed out as someone the rest didn't know, "I'm glad you are all safe." Then looking at the man, "Joseph over there couldn't place you. Where are you from? Do you have family we can take you back to?"

Armand finishes his prayers and stands, patting Joseph on the shoulder. "If you need anything we'll be right here."
Armand goes over to the group. "We're going to need to make preparations to bring the dead out as well." He tells the group.
He greets the villagers with a nod. "I'm sorry we took so long getting here. But we'll make sure everything is put as right as can be."
He turns to the Duergar, his face stone and his eyes piercing. "They are the nice ones." He says indicating Neshi and the rest of the group. "As I see it right now there is no reason to let you live and I'm prepared to met out justice. But I think there should be a price to pay for your actions. So unless you can convince me otherwise, I will see you slain for your crimes, each of your crimes. Which means for every dead prisoner you have I will see you executed, then raise you back from the dead and have you executed in a different and more painful way." He stares at the Duergar, waiting for his response.

DM StevenVdB - “They are the nice ones” Thursday September 12th, 2019 9:17:44 AM
Once the loot has been more or less divided the group turns its attention to the survivors and to Armand who has been trying to comfort Joseph with his losses.
Someone unknown to the survivors and at first sight not part of these slavers, rouses Atlas’s suspicion. The nimble fighter calmly questions the scruffy looking man… keen eyes stare back as the man speaks : ”Tha… thank you Sir for rescuing us… my name is Anfroy… Anfroy the Loner… I am but a humble pilgrim in Ffloy’s name travelling from Ailthmar to Plateau City visiting Ffloy’s temples in search of commercial enlightenment… ”. As the man speaks you can sense he gets more and more excited about his existence and survival, he dusts of his clothes and stands upright, shoulders back, suddenly you can see the salesman he hides inside. Elyngael too comes to talk to Anfroy. Having two listeners Anfroy continues : ”… my travels lead me from temples that have known great prosperity through hard work, to temples such as the one in this town… here one sees the danger of relying on one source of income and not preparing timely for the future… upon my arrival in this town however I found the people in distress for the missing boy and a first rescuing team. It sounded like good business joining the second team as succeeding in their retrieval would certainly have brought rewards. However I fight with numbers… not weapons… I was no match… “
Unable to help much right now Vamir communes with his cauldron Zaita to staying alert.
And then there still is the Duergar to take care of… Owen translates what the Duergar has to say but Atlas mutters he’d better stop talking gibberish. Neshi takes it one step further… if the Duergar doesn’t turn to a language they understand he sees no reason NOT eating him!!
Utimately Armand chimes in… ”They are the nice ones…”
This sentence and threats, but above all the hatred that can be felt in the words, are intimidating enough to scare even the boldest… some Tree Wardens raise an eyebrow at the Cleric’s words, but given the dark truth, of what happened in these mines, still ringing in Armands ears, most can understand the bitterness and hate the cleric feels.
For those who speak Undercommon Highlight to display spoiler: {”We were forced… }
The Duergar eyeballs the Tree Wardens… waves his hands and quickly switches to common language…
”We were forced to do this… we are only following orders… she threatened to destroy our settlement if would not do as she said… “
Wars are fought by men following orders… who is the evil doer… the man who brings down the sword… or he who gives the order… or…

Will you continue the interrogation down here in the mines or will you first travel back up? Will you take the departed ones also? It did take a while to travel down...

DM StevenVdB - ”THEY ARE HOME!!!” Friday September 13th, 2019 5:38:44 AM
The Tree Wardens soon realize there is indeed someone else pulling the strings behind the scene…
Bored Atlas dismisses Anfroy to hear what the Duergar has to say. This “She” sounds a lot more intriguing… Owen too wants to know more about ‘her’…
”How rude”, you can hear Anfroy say… after all he’s been fobbed off in the middle of his glorification of Ffloy… Elyngael though hushes him down, lightly informing him that despite all the questions they have for him, right now, he’d better start helping to leave this place… Her ‘puppy’ will see to it he puts enough effort in it. Anfroy eyeballs Brawn weighing pro’s and con’s, trying to see the best net worth in every angle of the situation and decides he’d better do as Elyngael instructs.
Intimidated by all, the Duergar blurts out some more information: ”Temorianalis is her name… She lives deep in the mountain ranges North of the Culverwood and has her cave in the Fire Mountain. She has threatened to destroy our homes if we don’t fill her treasure room… ” , the Duergar concludes in response to Yurneshi’s questions. North of the Culverwood you will find a mountain range full of natural wonders called ‘The Scab’… Volcanoes launch lava into the air… Geysers, mud pots and hot springs abound. Home to many wondrous creatures… probably home for our Duergar captive and his clan as well. And hideout for Temorianalis apparently…
There seems to be a general consensus that it is time to get back to the surface. Bring the survivors safely home and also to bring the departed ones back to their family for proper burials. Afroy, still offended by the dismissal of the Wardens but fearing the ‘puppy’, does his best to help. The Duergar, in chains as instructed by Armand, too shares the burden of his own actions.
Vamir’s idea to bring the dead home in a bag of holding is not well received by the survivors. Joseph is adamant to carry his son all the way home… back to his wife Susanna.
With everyone’s help the deceased and survivors are brought back up. Passing the narrow tunnels, up the shaft, the long tunnel back to the entrance. Close to the 10th log Joseph pauses and carves Tristan’s name in the hard wood… ”He would have wanted it…
As you work your way through the rest of the tunnel you notice it’s already dark outside. You can see a small fire burning near the entrance of the mine with a figure standing watch beside…
”THEY ARE HOME!!!” he shouts while he loudly rings the bell he holds in his hands… One by one the villagers come from their homes to watch the glorious entry of their relatives and the brave Tree Wardens… they peer down the tunnels as you draw closer to the exit…

On the way up Atlas ponders aloud, "So, I still cannot figure out why everyone was hearing Tristan's voice. Was it the cleric or something else? Does the Duergar know?"
Atlas takes in the welcome home, but it's a sad time watching people mourn the loss of their loved ones. Once things settle down he talks to the Wardens, "Well, it seems like we're going to see a lot more of this while this Temolis, or whatever her name is, is still around. I suggest we question the Duergar about her more and then we evaluate going after her to shut all this down. I'm sure the Culverwood is in danger and who knows what other areas. Oh, and what the heck is this Tiarnis person. Is she a Duergar, a giant, a drow...he didn't say that I could hear."
After pausing for a moment he finishes with, "Duergar are evil. I understand not wanting to kill someone that is tied up and helpless, but he'll kill again. We'll be saving lives if we just end his after we get everything we need out of him."

Rather than who, why don't you tell us What this Temorianalis is. And also tell us how she has cowered a whole village of Duergar."
As they near the exit he quietly says to his companions. "My friends I view this as a failure. We should indeed have teleported here as Neshi said. We might have been able to save more lives then. And I have other concerns. If what I suspect is true we are going to have to equip ourselves better to face this Temorianalis." He turns to Atlas. "We will need to sell what we can, and I fear that while the village has need of the platinum we found we may as well. We most probably will need to seek some more funding."

How can a boy, who we know was dead at the time, have called to us and lured us in? And Armand, it was not completely a failure, since we saved some and lost some. We also solved some mysteries but gained more. My belief is the things we learned about may prove to be invaluable and save more people." She turns and looks each of them in the eyes,"The platinum sharing should be decided by all the Wardens. I propose a meeting, without villagers, etc., and discuss it. The need is great on both sides. DM StevenVdB - "She’d be a Dragon of course... " Monday September 16th, 2019 8:30:36 AM
On their way back Atlas and Elyngael wonder why everyone kept hearing Tristan’s voice. You do recall that the Wyvaran was actually in child form the moment you entered the cave. It must have been he who was calling out for help. Voices are distorted as they travel through tunnels and mines… it’s easy to mistake ones voice for another especially if the ‘other’ is the one you’re hoping to hear… thus luring you in…
In the end, Elyngael is right… the Tree Wardens lost some but also saved others. Besides all that they also gained some new mysteries. She’s convinced they learned things that may prove invaluable and save a lot more people.
The matter of the platinum needs to be discussed later in private. The Wardens are not the wealthiest group of adventurers and most likely they will be needing everything they have to face this Temorianalis… whatever she is… whatever she is... Atlas wonders exactly what she is! Duergar? Giant? Drow? Their Duergar captive didn’t specify that nor did any of you ask… (and of course your DM so kindly didn’t say it for free ;-) )
Feeling this is his queue Armand follows in and questions the Duergar.
”What she is?!? You don’t know?? Why… she’d be a Dragon… Sir…” the Duergar says eyeballing you with eyes of disbelief. It seems he’s surprised you haven’t heard about Temorianalis… so he goes on while you walk towards the exit… ”She, Temorianalis the Dragon, suddenly appeared when we were all sleeping… she burned half our village and ate several of my kin… we cowered before her frightful presence and knelt. She ordered us to bring gold for fill her treasure room deep in the Fire Mountain. We gave all we have but still she wanted more… many of us roamed the Scab for other settlements in search for gold… we heard about this platinum mine and saw it as a way to saving our people… we had to! She’s going to destroy us… we can not defeat her… now… now… now we will all die for sure… do with me as you see fit… there’s nothing to go home to anymore… “ Sobbing the Duergar follows you towards the exit. It seems he’s done fighting and realizes one way or the other he’s met his doom.
One by one people are emerging from the mine. Joy in one family is sadly countered by the losses that can be felt by others. The Tree Wardens too exit the mine with mixed emotions… they did save quite a few but also lost many. Owen’s face is somber and Vamir wonders how he will match the abilities shown by the other Wardens… Neshi, uncomfortable with the emotions going on stays in the back… oddly, Armandconsiders this a failure… Is it?!?
Perhaps it is comforting that it could have been far worse if you had not succeeded. Heroes are shaped through experience… fall… stand up… fall again… the moment you stop falling you stop evolving… The Wardens could not have brought a better outcome than what is reached today.
So…
Is this the moment where not so wealthy adventurers win the lottery?!? Oh well… if you don’t consider there’s a Dragon guarding it… though you would of course not only win the lottery but perhaps also save a handful of Duergar… no matter if you consider them evil or victims of the same Dragon …
The Dragon Temorianalis… It’s up to the Tree Wardens to decide…

Atlas looks up, "Did someone say dragon?" He comes running over. "What type of dragon?"
After getting all the details Atlas looks to the group, "I'm not interested in saving the Duergar, but I imagine that this dragon would be a threat to the whole area, including the Culverwood. We need to do something about this."
------------------------------------------------------------- ooc: From a wealth perspective (addressing Armand's 82k), didn't I read a post that stated everyone should bring their wealth up to the standard for 12th level? Like, we received 42k gp or something to help us get there.
DM Note : We are aware you are behind on wealth... that's why we've given you a dragon with a treasure room!! You won't even be able to carry everything out... if you live...
Armand (Robert D) AC 21(20)/touch11/flat 19 HP 88/88 CMD 22 Character Sheet Monday September 16th, 2019 5:12:46 PM
Armand turns to Atlas. "It sounds like a red dragon from the description." To the rest of the group. "I still say we're going to need to prepare for this better. We need to find the nearest entrance to the Catacombs and Atlas is going to have to sell anything and everything we don't want. Except the bag of holding we need to keep that no matter what. And then we'll need to gear up. If we can go to Plateau City I can go into the Sages Guild and research Temorianalis and find out everything we can about her."
auto 30 on knowledge check when using a sage's guild library for one question/research.
He turns to Owen. "Is there any way/spells you have that would let you contact Eclyndryl ne LIdely in the Scab? Maybe her city or whatever it is Drow call where they live has some more information on the dragon."
Armand seeks out the Inn keeper. "It is late and many of the families will need some time to grieve, but there is much to discuss. Could you call a town meeting for the morning. I can provide food for many people and we can tell of what we learned."
Armand plans to pray appropriately in the morning and for the next day max out on Create Food and Water (5 so it will feed 180) and Hero's Feast (2 so it will feed 24).
Elyngael (Lynnette D) AC: 25 T:14, FF:16, CMD 29, HP 110/110 Monday September 16th, 2019 5:24:35 PM "A dragon? A red dragon?" Elyngael repeats unnecessarily and looks at her bow with a frown. Her special longbow suddenly looks a bit puny for shooting a dragon. "Armand is certainly right about needing to prepare. Prepare, equip, and arm ourselves more than we ever have. I've never faced a dragon, but the stories I've heard are enough to make me doubt my sanity at thinking we could possibly defeat one. Are we choosing a fiery death to be heroes?"
Vamir (Wade) AC:21 T:16 FF: 14 CMD: 20 Hps: 85/86 Dancing Lights, Ritual of Warding Monday September 16th, 2019 7:37:25 PM
Vamir walks into the camp, much on his mind. Vamir retreats into his robe, and cowl the bitter taste of failure stinging his tongue. The young witch watches the townspeople reunite with their loved ones, tears on some faces, and smiles on others. Vamir's ears perk up when he hears of the dragon, and he walks over to listen, leaning forward to ensure he catches every word. Vamir looks at the group, "I agree that much as been done today, and we should rest, recover and explain to these folks what has happened, and why. However, this news of an evil dragon bothers my soul. I have a pact with Queen Maab. I will attempt to commune with her in the morning before my rituals, and she if she will grant me any information on this drake."

Owen tries to remember what he knows of Temorianalis. Knowledge (History): 40.
He speaks to the others as privately as he can: [b]"We have drow contacts in the Scab. Saving a community of duergar would add to our allies there, one hopes. Let's return the platinum to the villagers--they were enslaved to acquire it--and get this duergar to guide us to his village and the dragon."[b]

Hmm, Not that he has ever really responded to me, but then again I haven't really asked much of him, and well, I'm not a priest, but just a follower, but perhaps during my devotions, such as they are, I can put in a query with Eberyon to see if he knows anything that he might be willing to share.
As for preparation, we may need to spend a little time thinking about what we can do against a dragon and what we each can bring to the party.
Later after eating and moving to a quiet place in the nearby woods, Neshi does him communing with nature and while doing so puts forth a query.
So Eberyon, I know you probably don't know me from anyone, though my master was one of your sorcerer priests, if that counts. But anyway, apparently we are bound in opposition with a dragon named Temorianalis and we know nothing about her, and well to be honest I am out of ideas and was kind of hoping for some sort of miracle to find someway to find out some sort of information that might even give us a chance of defeating her let alone coming back from this alive, but anyhow even if you aren't listening or even if you are and don't want to respond, thank you for allowing me some kind of control ofver the elements that you so passionately hold sway over.knowledge nature 19, knowledge planes 21.
(OOC: if no one has any objection, Neshi would love to switch/trade out (upgrade) his natural armor +2 to the +3 we just collected.)
DM StevenVdB - "A dragon? A red dragon?" Tuesday September 17th, 2019 9:47:19 AM
Though Atlas seems quite interested and immediately wants to know more about the type of Dragon most of the Tree Wardens are somewhat doubtful they will be able to stand up against a real dragon… a real, Red Dragon… a really red, real, red dragon...
Elyngael feels her special long bow suddenly looks a bit puny… Armand advises everyone to stock up and improve their gear to the best of their abilities. Going ill prepared up close and personal with a Dragon sounds folly… where’s a nice pile of gold when you need one… The Cleric checks with Owen if there is a way to learn more about the Dragon through their contacts in the Scab. Vamir and Yurneshi both try to commune with their deity in the morning hoping for some more clues about Temorianalis.
Even though no one seems to be overtly interested in saving a Duergar town from total annihilation by Dragon fire, there is a consensus that something needs to be done about Temorianalis. Owen voices the decision to leaving the Platinum for the town and getting the Duergar to guide the Wardens towards his village and the dragon. The Duergar’s eyes grow large… he felt his end was near and now these adventurers are planning to take on the Dragon… is he wondering what end is least painful?!? A swift slice with a sharp sword or be baked crispy in the breath of Temorianalis.
There’s little you learn from Divine or Woldly contacts nor do you have any recollections of your own that could shed light on this situation. There’s no information on where exactly the Dragon came from… they can travel far until they settle down claiming a new lair. It seems the Dragon found her new lair close to the Duergar village… not endangering any other regions… yet…
…
Let’s finish our business here in this little town. Pay your respect to the dead, see whatever contributions you will make to rebuild and restore. Feel free to pay a visit to the CC if needed.
If you decide to go on your way the next morning, let us know if and how you will convince the little Duergar to show you the way to his settlement and perhaps even the way towards the Fire Mountain…
Next DM post you will begin your next adventure…
On your way to you very first…

Atlas focuses on the Duergar, "Sure, we can give you over to the townsfolk and they can stone you to death. That sounds pleasant. On the other hand, you can come with us and be a hero to your village for finding a solution to your dragon problem. Seems strange that you would choose death, but it's up to you."
Armand (Robert D) AC 20/touch11/flat 19 HP 88/88 CMD 22 Character Sheet d20+14=26 ; Tuesday September 17th, 2019 6:13:07 PM OOC, I would like a little time to actually get CC transactions done before heading off to oblivion. Also we need to sell the goods and get the money back before we know what our budget is for a visit to the CC.
The next morning Armand rises early and then prays. Once that is done and the people of the village is gathered he casts, Create Food and Water (5 so it will feed 180) and Hero's Feast (2 so it will feed 24). Hopefully that will feed the majority of the town. He then gathers the town council and gives a speech. Diplomacy 26 (d20+14)
"Gentlebeings. I'm sorry to say that we have not arrived in a timely manner to save all those lost in the mine. While we were down there it appears there were Duergar there who had enslaved your people. There is one survivor." He indicates the lone survivor. "In questioning him it seems they are under the lash of a red dragon that has come to roost near their village. Still that does not excuse what they did to your loved ones. We intend to go after this dragon for it may soon pose a threat to an extended region. We did recover some of the ore your people were forced to mine. It comes to about 8000 platinum pieces. We would like to contribute that to your village in hopes that you try to recover some prosperity. Your village has languished when the mine played out. You must find new industry in order to survive. Perhaps Anfroy, a cleric of Ffloy, that we also rescued from the mine could help in this. The other option is for you to share the platinum equally and move to a more prosperous region and have a new start."

Owen nods gravely at Armand's advice to the village, adding his support.
He makes a trip to the Catacombs, then spends the evening learning new spells.

Vamir rises early, as is his custom. The young bloodwitch wanders outside and finds a nearby oak tree. Vamir absentmindedly shapes two potion vials from a small limb on the tree as he heads back to his room. Vamir takes a deep breath and draws woldsblood into the world for his spells, (24 concentration vs DC16). Vamir begins his beginning and intermediate rituals, (failed both both rolls natural ones, sheesh). Vamir spends the next two hours preparing two infusions, one of Remove Blindness/Deafness and one of Remove Paralysis.
Vamir walks downstairs, and joins the rest of the group. Vamir looks a little worse for the wear, but is determined to be of as much assistance as he can.
OOC: I would also like to have a rough idea of funds for the catacombs. In addition my character sheet is updated. I will now have a plant companion (Melzat) whenever the generous GM`s work him into the story.

Neshi looks at Armand a moment and then mutters under his breath a bit.

Elyngael (Lynnette D) AC: 25 T:14, FF:16, CMD 29, HP 110/110 Tuesday September 17th, 2019 9:15:36 PM
Elyngael stands with Armand in a show of solidarity. She agrees that they need time to prepare, and she also makes a trip to the Catacombs with a fire-breathing dragon in mind.
DM StevenVdB - ”Me Melzat… you?” Wednesday September 18th, 2019 9:56:59 AM
In the aftermath of the mine expedition, the Wardens and the mourning villagers wake up the next morning. The first to get out, as usual, is Vamir… he wanders outside and into the woods surrounding the town. Shaping new lifewood flasks and drawing woldsblood… ”Want me to clip your fingers too lad?”, he suddenly hears in his head… a small plant comes peaking from under the ferns nearby, underneath his shrubbery he eyeballs Vamir wondering if the Elf understands what he’s saying… ”Me Melzat… you?”
Armand makes sure there’s plenty to eat for everyone before he calls for a towns meeting. The Cleric regrets they came in too late yet it seems no one blames the Wardens for anything. On the contrary… But when the Duergar’s actions are mentioned you can sense anger and hatred flowing through the crowd. It’s obvious what will happen with him if you leave him here… It is much appreciated that the Tree Wardens do not claim the platinum for themselves but instead offer it for the recovery of the town. Owen and Elyngael agree with Armand’s proposal. Yurneshi though casts a shy look muttering under his breath of bit… luckily no one heard…
Anfroy frowns when Armand adds him to the equation. He cleans his throat : ”I didn’t think Ffloy would lay this task before me, but if that is what pleases him I will accept the burden. 8000 platinum pieces most certainly will help… “ Does he understand the 8000 PP is for the TOWN ?!?
Our Duergar looks a bit baffled that the Wardens are giving away all that platinum!! After all, it would have saved his town also… perhaps he’ll get a share as well?!? Atlas sees the little twinkle of hope in the Duergar’s eyes and quickly makes his options CRYSTAL clear… be stoned to death or go with the Wardens for finding a solution to the Dragon issue…
”Krugg…”, the Duergar says. Assumingly that is his name…
The people in the little village are, despite their losses, quite pleased with the settlement. The mine will be sealed, the names of the lost ones carved in the wood. Then, with help of Anfroy and the 8000PP they are looking forward again to the future.
(DM Note – I’ve stalled one turn to open up the next module. Unless you have other business to conclude here in the village let’s go ahead and feel free to do your purchases while we embark on your next adventures )
Atlas Sunowl (Trey) AC: 34 (T 21 FF 27) , CMD: 31, HP 95/132 Wednesday September 18th, 2019 5:30:25 PM
Atlas takes care of the treasure logistics and accounting, then prepares to go.
------------------------------------------------------------ ooc: If we sell all the remaining magic items from this adventure then everyone gets 22,926 gp. That's taking into account that Atlas is already at his max wealth, so it is divided between the remaining 5. If anyone else is at their max wealth then please share with those that are not.
Vamir (Wade) AC:21 T:16 FF: 14 CMD: 20 Hps: 85/86 Dancing Lights, Ritual of Warding Wednesday September 18th, 2019 8:52:42 PM
Vamir is startled to hear a voice, as he delicately, and painlessly removes the small limbs. Vamir looks at the plant like head peering from under the ferns. Vamir smiles at the plant and sits down,"Hi Melzat, I am Vamir." Vamir extends a hand to the creature as a token of friendship. "What are you doing here little one?"
OOC: Melzat's stats are located on my character sheet minus feats. Melzat is a small plant companion. I imagine he looks like a miniature weeping willow. I am still working on those and will post in the CC this evening.
Armand (Robert D) AC 20/touch11/flat 19 HP 88/88 CMD 22 Character Sheet Wednesday September 18th, 2019 8:56:23 PM "Yes Anfroy the money is for the town. It is not yours to spend even if spending for the town. The town must decide how to use the money." He then moves off with the others after the breakfast.
Armand nods to Atlas. "I think once we do some shopping there may be some more dividing of the wealth." Armand turns to the group after they are alone and preparing to depart. "What do we know of dragons in general? I'm assuming if it breathes fire then it is a red dragon. Are they then in turn immune to fire? How tough are there scales going to be? What would it's weaknesses be? We should really think this out some and gather some equipment as we go."
He saddles his horse and eyes the Duergar. "How are we transporting him?"

Elyngael says, "I'm going to get my bow changed out, we've been encountering too many things that are immune to fire damage."
She ponders Armand's questions. "I don't know much about dragons only rumors I've heard. They are not natural creatures but more magical in nature."
Knowledge nature isn't going to work on dragons. Elyngael only needs 17,000 of the gold.
Vamir (Wade) AC:21 T:16 FF: 14 CMD: 20 Hps: 85/86 Dancing Lights, Ritual of Warding Wednesday September 18th, 2019 9:03:48 PM
OOC: Vamir is reasonably well equipped. I will donate my coin to the group for additional upgrades. I just need someone to buy me a common broom for a spell. I don't have a magical weapon, but if I am drawing a melee weapon, or ranged weapon, I am in bad shape.

As Armand asks about the dragon and fire weaknesses, Neshi chimes in, well I know that Elementals of the fire type are more susceptible to Ice and water and yes generally they are less susceptible or even immune to fire. As for toughness of scale and such. I am less sure but I believe I have heard that you need magic to hit them.....
As for him, indicating the Duergar, I suggest a mule or pony and tie him to it. I can lead it/him as I will be on foot so to speak.
(OOC: Neshi is in Catacombs, Looks like it has been slow in there for a while now....)
