Scene 3: The Castle

The Castle
Friday September 27th, 2019 6:04:45 PM

Pru casts invisibility on Michael and he heads across the bridge with Anna-rat. The other wait behind for them to scout ahead, but after only a few moments, Nikolai starts across the bridge, leading the rest of the group.

Michael, invisible, gets across the bridge first. He sees a large block that is the castle. The castle on the far side of the white bridge is not nearly as large as you might have expected. Actually, it is sort of ugly, as castles go. The main building of the castle is just a giant block about 50 feet wide, 50 feet deep, and 40 feet tall. It looks to be three stories high, but it is just a rectangle. There is a square tower at the top of the castle, but you can just barely see it because it is on top center of the rectangle. There are no turrets or any of the usual protective features normally found in a castle, it is just a giant stone box. There are few windows, just places that almost look like a block is missing or was left out to let some light in. The walls are solid and smooth and if you were to guess, you would guess the top is going to look just like all the sides: flat and featureless. There appears to be just the one main entrance, a pair of very large wooden doors next to the white bridge.

The walls of the castle are sloped slightly and are smooth with few handholds. Climbing it would be difficult. The land directly around the castle is rather barren. For about 20 feet in all directions there is just dirt -- no grass, weeds, or growth of any kind. Knowledge, nature, DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: {This is not normal.} Spellcraft, DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: {Something magical is killing the natural growths.} Outside of that 20 foot range things are quite normal: trees, grass, and overgrown weeds are common.

Anna-rat scrambles across the bridge and sees much the same from a lower viewpoint. She wanders over towards the castle and it appears to be well-constructed, like the bridge. There are no gaps in the walls and no holes anywhere. In fact, beyond the edge of the grass there looks to be no signs of life at all.

The rest of the Agents make it about halfway across the bridge as Michael and Anna-rat explore. A number of townspeople stay in the town and watch the Agents depart. None offer to go with the group and they just stare in amazement at the brazenness of the Agents.

OOC:
Just paused halfway across the bridge to give scouts additional time to make some decisions, if desired.

Crossing the bridge:

Knowledge, Engineering, DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: {The bridge is very strongly constructed and has no current weak areas or weakness -- it should last a long time}
Knowledge, Geography, DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {These white stones are not native to this area, they must have been imported from some other region}
Detect magic or Spellcraft, DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {There is no magic related to the construction of the bridge}

Trayvin nods his head with Sigvar's advice. They can also offer some limited protection against magically summoned creatures.

I estimate the bridge at over 200 years old. It looks pretty sturdy, I don't think the townsfolk will need to worry about it for quite some time. Trayvin finishes examining the bridge while the scouts do their thing.

OOC: DM wrote There are few windows, just places that almost look like a block is missing or was left out to let some light in.

Well, that sounds like something a rat might get through, if you could climb up to it. But, …

DM also writes There are no gaps in the walls and no holes anywhere.

So, I don't know. Who really knows? Only the Shadow knows.

IC: "We'll, at least we didn't spend all day on a plan to sneak in. Let's go up to the door and knock. What's the worse that can happen? If no one comes to open the door, we pick it."

Nikolai marches on up to the door and bangs on the door. If there is a door knocker, he uses it. If not, he uses his fist. He'd ask Sigvar or Trayvin but if there is a trap somewhere, he has a good chance to avoid it.

The Castle
Monday September 30th, 2019 12:27:17 PM

Michael and Anna continue to explore and share what they find with the others. As Nikolai leads the ground down the bridge and towards the door he stops as he spies some movement just past the edge of the bridge. In the space between the bridge and the castle door (off to the side slightly, so it’s not blocking the door), a massive creature just sort of appears from the ground, almost flowing to a height of twenty-two feet tall.

The creature is a blue-skinned woman with a third eye in her forehead. She wears long, flowing blue robes that match her skin and appear to be soaking wet, dripping with water. She carries and absolutely massive spear that is at least twenty feet long. Her face is very plain as she looks over the group coming down the bridge. She calls out in common, in a voice that grates and bubbles, “Ah yes, you will be paying the toll for the bridge use now.”

OOC:
Sorry for the confusion on the walls description. Indeed, there are a few places where there are bricks missing that look a little like tiny windows. However, those are not near the levels where a rat could sneak in, they’re twenty feet or more off the ground.

Sigvar shakes his head and strides forward, undeterred by the giant woman.
" We are the Mailed Fist, contracted to end the evil coming from the castle. We have business inside so state your toll and let us be on our way. If your toll is lawfully levied and your intent is not evil we will pay it and trouble you no more. If not we will still pay it, but in steel."
If the creature is within 60' Sigvar will concentrate on it and determine if it is evil ( Reading the paladin power I actually shouldn't see anything BUT the creature targeted when concentrating like this, but I doubt it takes into account a place of evil like this so what we discussed before is still cool)
If the creature is more than 60' away then Sigvar calls the spirit into his bonded weapon making it Axiomatic and Flaming.

Trayvin likes Nikolai's bold plan. Walk up to the door and let the evil within cower as it should. The blue creature is a bit unexpected, seeming more elemental than evil, but Sigvar's challenge will determine that score. Trayvin isn't sure what it is, except that the creature is not natural.

Pru also notes that the bridge was built without magic, but the appearance of the blue woman drives all that out of her mind. She gives it some thought, but can't figure out what sort of creature the blue woman might be.

Since Sigvar's answer was perfectly good, Pru waits to see what will happen next.

A toll?
Tuesday October 1st, 2019 12:25:30 PM

Michael sneaks around behind the massive creature. She does not appear to acknowledge him, she only focuses on the group coming across the bridge. Sigvar steps forward as Pompous and Sigvar talk to the woman. She looks from one to the other and says, “Approach no closer until you have paid the toll or return back across the bridge. The toll? How much do you have?” She turns her head to the side and says, “Perhaps you can make an offer that is acceptable.”

OOC:
Sigvar is about 50 feet from the woman when she says to stop. Using his detect evil and from what he has learned about this place, he cannot see that she is good (as he can with the other Agents), so while he cannot clearly detect the level of her evil, it is certainly more evil than the orcs, and most certainly evil overall. He can detect a tiny little blob of good coming from directly behind her.

Sigvar taunts the giant woman, then follows up with a charge. As he sort of expects based on her size, she strikes out at him as he gets close and slams him in the side of the head (18 damage). The solid blow rings his bell and his attack completely misses the giant target. Trayvin casts magic circle against evil. Pru casts haste. Michael launches his attacks on the creature from behind. He weapons mostly get caught up in those flowing, watery robes, but he can tell he’s made some solid contact with one strike. Anna shifts her form and moves a bit towards the massive woman. Nikolai also shifts a bit closer while casting magic fang. Pompous casts a spell on himself as well.

The woman spins. As she does so, her spear swings out and in front of Michael. While Michael feels like he has just dodged a blow, he then notices that he wasn’t the target of the attack! He looks down and realizes that the woman just knocked his weapons out of his hands! He looks up as the woman’s third eye blinks at him and spits acid at him. It hits him in the chest and does not burn, but it does smell awful!

OOC:
Trayvin, please roll a check for the magic circle to overcome the spell resistance of the creature for the third effect of protection against evil.
I think Pru knows Michael well enough and has worked with him enough to allow him to be included in the haste spell. However, she is 50 feet from Michael and Sigvar at the moment of this casting. She can reach both Michael and Sigvar or the rest of the party…

Pru runs up and gets the rest of the party with haste.

Michael throws up on the flowing blue robes. He bends down and picks up his weapons as he watches the water flow around the marks he’s left on the robes, appearing to self-clean. As he stands back up, he sees the huge spear stab down at him striking him and taking out a very large chunk of his shoulder (Michael: 34 damage).

Nikolai jumps forward and avoid the giant spear. His fist hits nothing but robes. Anna, in the form of a behemoth hippo, does the same, with the same result. Sigvar is excited by being hit in the head and brings forth all his power against this evil foe (and yes, it does happen to be an evil outsider)! His strikes are true and a strange blue blood flows from the massive wounds that appear on the creature. As he slices into her, he yells at her to leave Michael alone. Pompous gets, well, pompous, and yells, “At Thee!” as he launches some arrows through the air. The woman dodges most of them, but one strikes her thigh.

Sigvar finds that he has indeed drawn her attention. She focuses on him with her gigantic spear and thrusts it at him repeatedly. The first blow is aimed at his neck and narrowly misses completely taking his head from his shoulders (that was a critical threat, but not confirmed!). He shifts at the last moment and the spear crashes into his collarbone (Sigvar: 32 damage). The spear moves with amazing speed and stabs towards him again and again. He dodges more blows, but another makes contact with his side (Sigvar: 36 damage). She laughs as her third eye erupts again, spitting the vile acid at Sigvar.

Fort save 18 fail
I cannot edit but Sigvar should be more in squres 17-18/R-S. The size is spot on. Also I was under the impression Michael was behind her and in flanking. If that isn't the case alot of my hits will have missed.

Sigvar staggers as the spear nearly takes his head, and his sword arm droops lifelessly from the blow. The acid hits him square in the mouth as he is taunting her and takes full effect. His world spins as the nausea and damage wrack his body. Reflexively his other hand touches him and heals him (LoH) for...
21 damage
Cures poisons of DC 28 (so close) or lower
Cures Diseases of DC 18 or lower
Removes curses of DC 15 or lower
and Removes the fatigued and exhausted conditions from him.
Stomach clenching and unclenching he raises his shield and prepares to weather the storm. Then his Muscles rebel and he heroically shrugs off the worst of the nausea and pushes through, realizing that the damage that crippled him might have killed one of the other Agents and he can not allow that.

For a moment, Pru considers helping Sigvar with a Greater Heroism, but it's a touch spell, and there's no way Pru's getting any closer to that spear.

Instead, she tries an Enervation, firing a twisting black ray in the direction of the blue lady. [I'm going to assume this thing has SR; Pru's check to overcome it is a whopping 19. On the off chance that actually works, the ray hits Touch AC 21, and gives the blue lady 2 negative levels.]

Sigvar staggers under the massive blows from the spear. He ducks under his shield as the acid hits him in the mouth. He reflexively heals himself and tries to shake off the feelings in his stomach from the stench. Pompous is worried and yells at the massive woman, sending a number of arrows at her. Many get tangled in her robes, but one clearly strikes through them. Trayvin moves up to support and calls out to Sigvar.

Pru considers moving up, but really doesn’t want to be near that spear. She fires a black ray, but those robes seem to twist, block, and deflect the ray from reaching the target (indeed, that’s spell resistance). Michael shakes his head and launches a series of effective attacks against the creature. Strange bright blue blood flows from the various cuts and wounds, mixing with the watery robes and dripping towards the ground. Anna-Hippo makes herself stronger. Nikolai keeps up his movement, quickly stepping up to the creature, making contact, and slipping back out of range of the massive spear.

Very suddenly the space where the woman was is empty! There is just nothing there at all, the massive creature has just completely disappeared from sight!

OOC:
Whew! These higher level battles with lots of things really is, well, a lot! I do apologize in advance for any confusion. Just FYI, when I’m working on these posts, I try to look up every single rule where I’m not 100% familiar with the rules and how they apply. I try to favor the characters, but I also try and apply the rules as they are written. I am sorry when I have to disallow an action because of how I read the rules, please don’t take it personally! I want the characters to win, and I love reading the creative actions you write for your characters.

That said: I sent a longer email to David regarding Sigvar. Short version: Sigvar’s LoH won’t remove the nauseated condition. No swift action is allowed with the move action (nauseated ONLY allows one move action). So if the LoH is used, that takes all of the actions available to Sigvar. If it is not used and a hero point is used to expand his action options, he still can’t attack because nauseated specifically states that someone can’t attack with that condition. So Sigvar can use the LoH to heal himself, but then he’s out of actions – no hero point used.

On Michael’s placement – yes, he was directly behind the creature giving Sigvar flanking. After the creature knocked his weapons down, she shifted towards the top of the map 5 feet, removing the flanking until Michael moves again. Also on Michael: how do you get to apply sneak attack bonus to flanking? Or is there something else you’re doing there to get 7d6 of extra damage on every attack? I have searched the character sheet, but I don’t see anything there. The attacks aren’t sneak attacks now – so if there’s a feature that allows your character to potentially do thirty-five d6 damage in every single round at level 13 (plus 5d4+15), I think there’s something really, really out of balance (that’s an average of 150 points every round without any criticals). Even a CR25 tarrasque can’t do that kind of damage in one round (its average is 148), never mind every round. For this round, I didn’t count all those additions, but if that’s actually a thing (applying sneak attack bonus to all flanking attacks), let me know and I’ll apply it back next round and really, really, really have to beef up monsters in the future.

Oh, and a fun note that I just want to point out because otherwise you wouldn’t know. That magic circle against evil? Yeah, it’s doing a great job. The monster was going to attempt some mind controlling spells that could have made things go bad. She did recognize the spell as it was cast and didn’t go down that road, so that spell actually likely changed the entire balance of this encounter!

OOC: Pathfinder reference doc- classes- rogue.
Sneak Attack: If a rogue can catch an opponent when he is unable to defend himself effectively from her attack, she can strike a vital spot for extra damage.

The rogue's attack deals extra damage anytime her target would be denied a Dexterity bonus to AC (whether the target actually has a Dexterity bonus or not), or when the rogue flanks her target. This extra damage is 1d6 at 1st level, and increases by 1d6 every two rogue levels thereafter. Should the rogue score a critical hit with a sneak attack, this extra damage is not multiplied. Ranged attacks can count as sneak attacks only if the target is within 30 feet.

With a weapon that deals nonlethal damage (like a sap, whip, or an unarmed strike), a rogue can make a sneak attack that deals nonlethal damage instead of lethal damage. She cannot use a weapon that deals lethal damage to deal nonlethal damage in a sneak attack, not even with the usual –4 penalty.

The rogue must be able to see the target well enough to pick out a vital spot and must be able to reach such a spot. A rogue cannot sneak attack while striking a creature with concealment.

Michael knows about invisibility, so he reaches in his pocket and pulls out his bag of powdered chalk and starts flinging handfuls into the air around where she disappeared. if she's invisible and wet this should point her out handily.

Michael has a truly un-good thought. what if it's invisibility is a defence mechanism to keep it hidden while it regenerates. with that in mind it takes its spear, then thinking that it will be too big to carry with them he weakens the shaft so that it will break if used. then leaves it behind. He then goes and has a look at the door. Though doing so always brings forth a sense of melancholy, This was always Tinker's job, I sure miss that old dwarf. still he always tries to think about how Tinker would do things and that usually nets him pretty good success when it comes to locks and doors. He first checks to see if there is a gap beneath the door or gaps in the boards that make the door up. if any of those things exist he can use a piece of wire to push or lift the bar across the door, if not it's just a matter of drifting out the pins in the hinges, then they can just move the door out of the way. he does try to just open the door first though.

Pru looks at the apparent front door of the castle. Anna changes shape once again. Michael ponders the massive body. As he weakens the giant spear, Trayvin assures him that the beast is indeed quite dead.

Then Michael heads over to the door. He checks it out. He looks the door over carefully. He touches the edges and latch. He looks for holes and spaces around the door. It looks to be a quality door. There are very small spaces and gaps, but better than your average quality door. He heads over to the hinges and looks them over. They look to be in good service. He starts working on sliding his fingers around the edges of the door and then Nikolai walks up to the doors, grabs the handle, and pulls on the handle.

There is discussion about looking for treasure, but instead the group heads for the open door. When Nikolai pulls on the door handle, the door opens easily. A pile of dust falls down from the top of the door and much of it gets caught in cobwebs just inside the door. There is an open space beyond the door, but little can be seen yet – it is dark inside and the cobwebs covered with dust make seeing into that space even more difficult.

Trayvin doles out some healing to the group as they head inside. Looks dusty? If it is so dusty then maybe the orcs were not from here?

"Not necessarily so. This entrance looks unused, but the orcs could have come from a different exit. Or, just teleported from inside to outside. Only one way to find out."

Nikolai whips out his Everburning Torch and shines it around, knocking cobwebs away from the entrance with it.

Nah, I read about this, I think it's in Oxnards Tretis of the Undead. Liches have to have dust, it's part of the ambiance, they get their phylactery pulled if the Undead inspectors don't find the digs to be up to snuff. .

Michael downs a potion of night vision and heads inside to scout ahead of the dancing lights.

perception 21. 37, 32, 21. that aught to take me pretty far into the interior.
