[Everybody take 108,000 XP for the previous scene.]

You gather together and speak the command word, wondering what the next world has in store. The green dimness of the Deepgloom Forest fades away, replaced by--well, more dimness, really. You feel a sudden jolt when you arrive.

The jolt gives you hope, and looking down, you can see that, praise be to every god you've ever heard of, you are back in your own body. You are yourself agin!

You look around, but honestly, there isn't much to see. For one thing, it's pretty dark out. The sky is quite dark, with just the faintest glimmer near the horizon, suggesting the sun might rise soon. Those of you who can see in this light discover that the land here is dry, barren, and featureless. There is no road; there are no tracks; there is no way to determine which way you need to travel.

Wait - he cannot see in the darkness? He feels his face and his clothing. He reaches for his circlet and his holy symbol.

"Yippie! It looks like we're back to our old selves! Now, lemme see what I can do about this darkness."

Rill pulls out a ring from his pocket with Continual Flame cast on it. He holds it tightly in his fingers to limit the light to just their general area for now. He breathes a sigh of relief when he see Bralin standing nearby. He looks at their surroundings as well, and can surmise where they might be. "Hey Bralin - thanks for the use of your body for a bit. It worked well, and I tried to take good care of it. As for where we are, I would guess from our surroundings it one of the infernal planes - probably one of the levels of the Abyss. That's bad."

Then Rill will reach out with his senses to determine if there are any constructs or outsiders within 1,080 feet. He will share what he learns with the others.

For a moment, you just appreciate being back in your own body--perhaps, with a newfound appreciation for some of your teammates.

The news that you are in the Abyss, however, proves to be a bit of a mood-killer. You tend to feel that you should accomplish your task and leave quickly, as this place has the potential to be quite dangerous.

There is, of course, a problem with that, which is that you aren't sure which way to go. The land here is flat and featureless. The dry, packed soil does not hold footprints. There is no road, no track, no landmarks. Rill detects no constructs or outsiders. There does not seem to be any indication of which way to go.

Some of you are concerned about depleted resources and a lack of opportunity to rest. To clarify, divine casters could have renewed their spells back in The Glade. Of course, you weren't in your own bodies, so some of the specific spell choices may have been--unusual--but you could have done it. I'm sorry that wasn't clear. If you want to do the bookkeeping, you can still update spells if you like.

Rill suggests that Aexana go aloft, which she gladly does.

Meanwhile Terser casts Commune with Nature and finds...a whole lot of nothing. You have never encountered a place so desolate in your entire life. There's nothing here. Nothing at--oh, wait. Over there. Something mineral. Ordinarily, a little blob of mineral like that would barely register among more interesting things, but here....here it's the only thing remotely noteworthy.

Similarly, Aexana sees a lot of nothing, even from a height. Her low-light vision helps penetrate the darkness, but it's awfully dark and it's difficult to make anything out. Of course, it doesn't look like there's much to make out anyway. But...over there. That may be something. You can't see it clearly at that distance because of the darkness, but you think, probably, there's something there.

When Aexana lands, she and Terser can compare notes, and the blob of minerals and the maybe-something are in the same location. Which would seem to invite further exploration.

You decide against showing a light source, relying instead on those who can see in this dim light. And the light remains dim. When you got here, the sky was dark except for a faint glow on the horizon, which seemed to indicate the sun would rise soon. As you walk, the sky remains dark, except for a faint glow on the horizon which your brain insists on interpreting as "sunrise soon" even though by now you know better. Perhaps this is one of the torments of this place--a perpetual hope, perpetually dashed.

You've been walking for nearly an hour when you reach it. It is a metal and stone obelisk, about 15 feet high, set inexplicably in the middle of this vast plain. It has clearly been here for a while, and is therefore not the Tinker's device.

Closer examination reveals a seam on one side. It may be possible to open this thing up.

Ring of Spell Storing; Staff of Illusion; Potion of Fly; Scroll of Breath of Life

They do not, alas, find any clues about how to deactivate the device. Indeed, from the look of it, the satchel has been here for a long, long time. The Tinker either didn't notice it when he placed the device in here, or didn't care enough to investigate it.

As Bralin, Aexana, and Jozhur watch nervously, Tahni makes a thorough, painstaking study of the device. With Rill's help (and in spite of Terser's help), she is able to weave a subtle change into the magic that powers the "egg."

It is deactivated. You can pull it apart if you like, but it is no longer a threat.

"I... I think that does it. Anyone want to do the honors of doing some 'physical' changes to it?"

Terser (Warren) [AC22/13/19 - CMD 30 - HP 230/230, DR 3/-, Regen 1, Mind Blank] (25% no crit, rage 39/39, channel 7/7)

"It's kinda neat. If it weren't for the whole destroy the multiverse aspect, I'd keep it as a souvenir. "

"Wait... that's it?!? " Aex says with a lot of disbelieve.

Fang is not one for souvenirs and she is precise in her utter destruction of the thing. "Are we ready to move on? I was expecting more danger from this place."

At Tahni's comment, Bralin pulls out his waraxe, and proceeds to inflict some physical changes upon the device.

Rill (MarkB) HP 161/161 - AC 29/16/27 - SR 20 - CMD 26

Rill watches as the thing is destroyed.

"Well, there's no telling where we're headed next. This is not a good place to rest. But let's get prepared before we leave. I suggest someone capable of casting divine spells hold the Breath of Life scroll. I already carry one, so it should be someone else. As for the staff, who can cast Illusion spells? I'll see if I can tell what's in the ring - it may be important."

Rill puts on the Ring of Spell Storing to see what spell(s) may be stored in it.

Jozhur (Brock)
Tuesday October 15th, 2019 9:33:36 PM

Jozhur breathes a big sigh of relief, "Good job, Tahni".

"This place gives me the willies, let's get out of here."
