DM Mitch Friday September 20th, 2019 7:44:15 AM Tink suggests they retire somewhere to discuss matters as a well is no place to stay. Garret reaches out and touches the heart, confident Sesha isn’t watching him. Restlin considers conjuring up his mansion but figures that the queen must have a place they could talk that is more comfortably than the well. Zane suggests that they could get the undead talking at least as they are a group of unknowns. He echoes the other’s sentiments about going somewhere else to talk things over. Wyaar agrees. As does Sesha. Beri suggests they get away from the corrupting influence of the heart and observes there already appears to be volunteers to be neutral flag bearers. Bosk offers to cook food.
GarretHighlight to display spoiler: {The heart feels like a smoothly polished stone but not quite. It isn’t so much that it is beating but that it is kind of pulsating but faintly.}
Queen Esmerald says, “Of course. Where are my manners. I assume you all have some means to fly or climb. Let me know if we need to arrange a lift out of this well. Otherwise follow me.” The 3 sets of wings on her back start flapping and she moves up the shaft of the well. The rest of you follow the queen. She says, “We can go to Crystal City, though given the infrequent nature of the undead attacks we might have to sneak in depending on how things look when we get there.” She leads you down a long winding forested path. After several minutes she turns off onto a branch and you end up on a hilly area that pokes up above the surrounding forest. A decent ways away down the path that you departed you see a rather large city surrounded by high walls that appear to be made out of a cloudy crystal. While the city appears to be in locked down with no one entering or exiting at the moment there doesn’t appear to be any undead attacking it at the moment.
Queen Esmerald says, “Well looks like the Skeletal troopers aren’t attacking right this moment but it probably wouldn’t look good for the Queen to walk up to just walk up to the gate and be let in in case they have spies.
She looks around for a moment and then spies a large oak tree. She places her hand against it and the tree starts glowing. “Hurry, the tree portal won’t be open for long. It will take us directly to the city before sealing behind us and the oak itself will turn into the sapling it was originally before temporarily storing this portal power.”
She steps through the glowing tree.

One by one the Iron Dragons enter the tree portal some warrier than others regarding potential threats. Garret informs the others over the rings that the stone heart feels like it is still beating.
The Iron Dragons and Queen Esmerald emerge in the courtyard of a rather large castle through a tree growing in the orchard. Queen Esmerald says, “A well is no place to be, especially in the middle of a warzone. Why don’t you take some time to freshen up. Please avail yourselves to my hospitality.”
She claps her hands and 2 liveried servants magically appear stepping from a nearby tree. She says indicating a slight, snub nosed fairy woman, “Ladies, please follow Magentia here to quarters where you can bathe, change clothes and partake in light refreshment if you so desire. I will be having a dinner for us to discuss the matter of the Skeletal Troopers this evening. My Hand, Minister of coin and Minister of agriculture will be in attendance”
Magentia smiles and says to Sesha and Tink, “If you will please follow me.”
Queen Esmerald then addresses the male members of the Iron Dragons, indicating the platinum haired male fairy servant with a strong jaw “Gentlemen, Geodio will see you to your quarters. As with the ladies there will be baths, light refreshments and clean clothes provided if you need them. We will reconvene this evening for a dinner meeting with my small council. I trust this is agreeable?” She asks.
Geodio says to Wyaar, Restlin, Garret, Beri, Zane and Bosk, “If you will follow me gentlemen I will show you to your quarters.”

DM Mitch Tuesday September 24th, 2019 7:51:57 AM Tink is a little taken aback by the royal treatment. Impressed she gives the Queen a bow before following Magentia. Garret gets his hopes up at the prospect of staying with the queen only to have them dashed when he hears that there will only be “light refreshment.” He makes inquiries as to how light refreshment will be. Restlin follows close on Geodio’s heels. He tells Garret he’ll just have to eat more and offers the halfling his share of the food not being that hungry. Still the mage-priest will not turn down the opportunity to freshen up. Zane says over the ring that the queen must count as an undead too since her heart is in that well. He hopes they aren’t being used as pawns and follows along not letting his guard down. Beri says it is unlikely they were being used as pawns considering they came in unannounced. He also hopes the Skeletal Troopers are open to a peaceful path forward. Bosk appreciates the bath. He did not detect that the queen was undead. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Magentia leads Sesha and Tink to a richly appointed set of rooms. Each has a large canopy bed, a wardrobe full of beautiful dresses, full length mirror, fireplace, wood panelling and an oaken chest at the foot of the bed that you can store things in. Each also is connected to the female communal baths. While there are several large communal hot tub like structures there are a few smaller individual tubs behind curtains too. The rooms are connected by a common room with a harp, spindle, easel and table laden with cheese, crackers, small portions of smoked meat, pastries, little cakes and dried fruit. There is also an urn full of coffee, decanters of wine, sherry and water. A chilled caraffe of heavy cream and a sugar bowl. Before Magentia leaves she hands you a hand bell and says, “Ring if you need anything. Dinner will be at 7.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Geodio says to Garret as they are walking down the hall, “There are small morsels of smoked meats. However, I’d save room for dinner later if I was you. I’m sure the food at the Queen’s dinner meeting will be delicious.”
Geodio leads Restlin, Wyaar, Garret, Zane, Bosk and Beri down a hallway that ends in a terminal common room like area with pairs of suites diagonally adjacent to each other. In the common room there is a chess set, backgammon board and some cards. There is also a table laden with nuts, small bits of smoked meat, crackers, cheese, pastries, little cakes and dried fruit. There is also a small keg of ale, decanters of wine and water as well as a chilled carafe of heavy cream and a sugar bowl.
Each room has a large canopy bed, a fireplace,a wardrobe full of fine outfits, full length mirror, wood paneling and an oaken chest you can store things in at the foot of the bed.
In the common room a corridor opposite from the one you entered from leads to the male communal baths. There are several large hot tubs and several small individual tubs behind curtains in the bathing area.
Before Geodio leaves he gives you a hand bell and says, “Dinner will be at 7, good sirs. Please ring if you need anything.”

Tink decides to go with one of the small individual tubs behind a curtain. She'd be too self-conscious to be able to relax in the water in front of Sesha.

Sesha is down to her under-garments, preparing to bathe, while also sniffing the cheese left out for her and Tink. Restlins invitation catches her imagination, but she figures being naked next to Restlin, in public, wasn't in her immediate plans.
"Not at this moment, Mage Priest. I think I'll take the female company for now."

"I think we should all stick together for now... What are you taking about Restlin? Our bath had three tubs, the largest of which could easily fit ten men, and the smaller ones could easily fit two with room to spare... and that was before the remodel! Still, I still have the ability to make some changes to the structure. I can further enlarge the bath when we get back."
DM Mitch Wednesday September 25th, 2019 5:40:31 AM Wyarr takes a bath and loses some chess. Garret rushes ahead to eat himself to sleep. Restlin takes a hot bath and wins some chess. He suggests the ladies join him in the hot tub and that they put one in the tower. Zane drinks and meditates. Tink declines Restlin’s offer and sticks to the lady baths. Beri baths as a water elemental. Sesha also declines and is somewhat impatient. Bosk is incredulous at Restlin’s desire for more baths at home.
As dinner approaches Geodio and Magentia come to collect each gendered group and escort them to the chamber where the dinner meeting is to occur.
You arrive at the chamber at about the same time to overhear a heated exchange between Queen Esmerald and someone. A man’s voice says, “I’m telling you I don’t think they can be reasoned with. Aside from you I’ve been around the Skeletal Troops more than anyone. I was the second best living warrior we had aside from you your highness and I lead the killing machines on several sorties so I’m fully aware of the brutality they are capable of. I asked you to make me Minister of War but you said we were moving beyond that. I tolerated your suggestion and accepted the role of Minister of Agriculture but I at the end of the day I am a fighter not a farmer. Let me start requisitioning the blacksmiths to make some fine blades instead of plows and it won’t take me long to train up a group of soldiers capable of defeating the Skeletal Troopers if we are smart about it. They are not invulnerable and can be destroyed despite their resilient nature.”
The Queen says, “I appreciate your counsel old friend, but my mind is made up. I almost gave in to the power of the pact earlier today. I can assure you that I was prepared to lead my people myself against the Skeletal Troopers but this group I met, the Iron Dragons they walked me back from the ledge. Allow me to do the same for you my dear Mercutio. You’ve always been my most trusted adviser and I admire your passion but I think you need to calm down now.”
Mercutio says with an exasperated sigh, “I suppose you are right your highness.”
As you turn the corner you see an older bearded fairy man sitting at the Queen’s right hand. He has chestnut hair and the 6 wings common for his kind and is dressed in very fine courtiers clothes and has an air of command about him. The table at which he and Queen Esmerald sit has been set for dinner with plates, bowls, forks, knives, spoons but it doesn’t look like anything has been served yet. There is enough space for all of you plus 2 more beside the Queen and Mercutio.
The Queen says to Mercutio, “Here the Iron Dragons are now. We just need Isabelle and Corgan and we can begin.”
Queen Esmerald smiles at you and says, “Please take a seat. We will start serving the meal once everyone has gotten here.” A few moments later a dark haired fair skinned fairy woman enters. She says matter of factly, “Forgive my tardiness my queen but I was personally seeing to the matter that you requested of me.”
Finally a portly fairy man enters. He says, “My apologies your highness but you do realize it is hard to be Minister of Coin when we don’t know when the Skeletal Troopers will attack our merchant caravans or lay siege to the city. The uncertainty is playing havok amongst the people and I’m doing my best to assure them we have things in hand but it gets harder and harder to keep up appearances. I pray there is good news and that is why you called for this meeting.”
Queen Esmerald smiles at Corgan and says, “There is good news. Today I have found folk from afar who will help us end the conflict with the Skeletal Troopers. With their help we can hopefully set the stage for a parlay where we can reconcile with the Skeletal Troopers and end the attacks. They were once some of us so I never should have been selfish and discarded them like I did. I’m convinced that there is enough left of the fairies that they once were in them that we can reason with them.”
“I also believe that the Iron Dragons themselves said they had some ideas with how to deal with our current situation. Hopefully they will elaborate now and then we can get to dinner.”
"Usually, our plan is to apply overwhelming magical force to any situation. There's always a spell for something. In this case, if we cannot convert your skeletal troops, we will destroy them. If we cannot destroy them, we can seal them away or exorcise them. If we can't do that, Restlin will just turn them into a childs toy of some design and keep them in a backpack for the rest of his mortal life, before we store them in our vault."
She takes a sip of whine.
"We found the less complication in the plan, the more likely all of us are on the same page."

"What they're saying is true, of course, but that doesn't mean we're not skilled diplomats. To do that, we need to be sure we know the whole story. Entering negotiations only to discover they've been wronged more than we've been lead to believe will throw a wrench into everyone's plans."

Beri takes a sip of the wine and listens to the others. Yes. And my apologies Queen Esmerald that we are starting this conversation confirming our ability should we be called upon for the worst case contingency. We've found that leaders are often less averse to try a peaceful path forward if they know they that position is backed up by a strong offense and an impenetrable defense.
The first part of our plan is both the simplest, and the most crucial.
Beri tries to choose his next words carefully to avoid mentioning the heart, not knowing if any at the table besides the queen know of the heart, the pact that permeates it, and the evil seeping from it.
First we need to arrange a parlay with the warriors. Our small group with a group that can speak for them. We should meet in the open with a clear view all around, far enough from the castle walls and from their main force that both sides can be sure there is on ambush planned. Is there a suitable location away from the castle in that direction?
Beri points in the direction opposite of the heart, and farthest away from the evil spilling from it, hoping it will maximize the chances of being able to broker a peace.
This is of course assuming your customs and rules of warfare are similar to those from our land. If there is something your customs would dictate we should change please let us know. We want to make sure that we are doing all we can to engage in a fruitful discussion toward peace.
On that note, your highness, I believe you said that the negotiations would go more smoothly if you weren't physically there. If that is the case I believe a letter written in your hand would be the next best thing, confirming we are there on your behalf to discuss a lasting and permanent peace, relaying your heartfelt regret for what happened, and your hopes regarding moving forward together into the next chapter of your countries history.

Do they have complete or limited free will? The more we know about them the more likely we are to fund a peaceful resolution

Being outsiders it is important not to usurp the advisor from his position. It would be best to keep him on side as well.
"Allow me to explain. There will always be threats to your kingdom - if not from the skeletal troops then potentially from those demons. Noone can predict what the future may bring. I believe there is a good middleground between a fully armed populace and a city with no means to defend itself. I'm not saying by any means that the people here should launch any attacks or go on the offensive, however I think there is wisdom in preparing a small contingent to defend yourselves if necessary"

"Beri has a good plan for the meeting. I would only suggest the addition of making sure the meeting place is in a neutral location. Neither side should hold the upper-hand"
DM Mitch Thursday September 26th, 2019 8:22:44 AM Sesha comments on their overwhelming magical power. Garret resists the urge to jump on his seat. Wyarr agrees with Sesha. Restlin asks for the full story and hints with his tone that it would be foolish to leave anything out. Zane says he has no ideas at present. Beri lays out a plan for the negotiations. Bosk quotes an old saying. Tink points out that other threats might exist so total disarmament is probably unwise.
Esmerald says to Sesha, “I appreciate the fact that you do have those abilities to bear as I and my people once had something similar but I am trying to move myself and my people beyond savagery. I am trying to bring about prosperity through peace and I have not committed a violent act since I removed my heart. I really nearly did lose all that I had worked hard for and I thank you all for coming along to prevent that from happening.”
Esmerald says to Wyaar, “Again I appreciate your magical aptitude but I do not wish the Skeletal Troopers put down if we can help it. They were victims of the war essentially. We used the knowledge we gleaned from the pact to create a new type of soldier with our dead. Although they couldn’t couldn’t fly like we can they were tougher, stronger and capable of accomplishing goals. Some kept some of the skills and memories the fairies they were made from had in life. I made the decision to lock them away as I was scared. They are owed an apology for being discarded and hopefully we can build upon our commonality to reach a lasting peace.”
Queen Esmerald says to Restlin, “I have laid out the whole story about the Skeletal Troopers. We fashioned them with knowledge from the pact out of the remains of the fallen. They were excellent warriors capable of intelligent thought and apparently free will when not bound by the magic of the equipment the pact granted to control them. My last command to them was to seal themselves away in a place I didn’t think they could escape from. I did it to try to save my living people from what I thought was a corrupting element. When you encountered the demons in the well we essentially were under a banner of truce. They have since disappeared and as far as I know no sightings have been reported. There are other continents in this world perhaps they’ve grown tired of mine. Regardless if I am blocking their power by eschewing the heart I have to wonder if destroying them would interfere with whatever we have going on here with my gifts and the calming power of the walls. You may not run into them a second time and I question if chasing them down would only make things worse with the undead.”
Queen Esmerald says to Zane, “I pray that diplomacy does not fail. I don’t see much difference between myself crushing the undead uprising or those I have designated to try to broker a peace doing so. I gave the orders to use you to help if it just ends in them getting destroyed have I really shown myself to be any better than I was in unison with the pact?”
Queen Esmerald says to Beri, “You don’t seem to understand. I’m not like most rulers. My people were burned by the kind of strength you exhibit in the worst contingency. I do not seek a blunt instrument. I want an olive branch. I do admit I like your non-violent plan. As for a location where you can probably meet I will have you refer to Corgan or Isabelle. My Minister of Coin is intricately familiar with the Caravan routes and My Hand has had dealings with cartographers. Our warrior traditions were probably similar up until the point where I ended my people’s use of warrior traditions. As for a signed note is there anything specific you think I should include or am I free to draft the missive myself? I will of course defer to your collective wisdom if you think my draft missive needs to be adjusted.”
Mercutio says, “Though I admit I am starting to like the style of this group, your highness I am not sure if they are the kind of people you are looking for. Restlin, that guy dressed in spiffy clothing might be able to act the part of the type of person you are looking for but that other guy Zane, well he’s large, has bronzed horns and just seems like the kind you wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley. As much as I want your dream of a peaceful tomorrow to be a reality for you your highness if this is the group you are sending can I at least start working on my own contingency preparations? If we are going to build weapons of war again then I would like to at least have a guard force and in order for them to be effective they’ll need training. Let me draft the men and have the equipment ready and if their plans fail well me and my men can back up the Iron Dragons as we mop up the Skeletal Troopers.”
Corgan replies to Mercutio, “There has been no such authorization from the treasury for weapons of war. The Queen was quite clear as to what markets we would not be doing business in and arms was one of them. Furthermore there is nothing in the budget that stipulates a salary for guardsmen so as things stand from a monetary perspective and you don’t even have to go to the queen for this one, the answer is no.”
Isabelle says, “I think if anyone is getting a budget increase for staff expenses it should be the Hand. The undertaking that Queen Esmerald has me doing is not cheap, especially when the folks I am working with do not have the kind of protections those normally in their field would have with a typical ruler. Hazard pay is expensive.”
Queen Esmerald says, “Shall we break for supper, Finish eating, then formalize the plan by hammering out where the Iron Dragons can meet with the Skeletal Troopers and what my note should convey? It seems like we should have a unified front moving forward but perhaps it is hunger that is driving a wedge between the members of my council?”

Restlin's eyes narrow slightly at Mercutio's words, but he says nothing. Zane's not a maiden in need of defending.
Once dinner's mentioned, there's no stopping Garret, so he goes along. He nods at the Queen's suggestion. "You know your world better than us, your highness. Those demons didn't seem like the sort the shrug their shoulders...if they had shoulders...and walk away. I hope you are correct, but I'm still glad we have a paladin in our ranks should they prove troublesome."

As an example, Our home tower now houses an entire clan of what at first look by most would be a large group of evil creatures. I am, I guess their primary champion and protector. I am not just a brute force solution looking for a place to pound that solution into place. While I have stated others are more suited to being diplomatically oriented, I also said I am not unfamiliar with the process, just that I'm not as proficient as others of our group and that's why I let them do most of the speaking."

When food is mentioned, Garret looks over at Restlin, licking his lips. He nods at the suggestion, but remains silent otherwise, carefully listening.
Sesha considers the important, final bit mentioned by the queen. Her note. The skeletal troopers would be a problem, but somehow, she empathized with them just a little.
"I imagine, as you put it, you should convey they are not monsters nor enemies to your people. They are victims of a war time decision, heroes of a sort that were needed at the time, and perhaps they should be treated as such." She pauses. "Like my ancestors, the twilight elves."
She thinks a bit more.
"Maybe they are the ones you should appoint as your trainers and peacekeepers. You can extend them the olive branch of trust, inviting them into your unarmed populace."
She sighs.
"The downside is if they are bent on hurting you, they will. With us gone and your people unarmed, they could wade through and burn your kingdom to dust, perhaps. That's a choice for you as a ruler to make, I suppose. Trusting them without condition, or trusting them only when they are surrounded by swords."
She pauses.
"If they demand your life, in exchange for peace and a promise to guard your kingdom, would you take it? Would you trust them?"

Beri can smell the food and agrees that a break to eat and think would be best.
I agree with you that it would be best to break for supper. With any fears dealt with regarding worst case scenarios it would be best if we come back afresh after dinner focused just on a peaceful resolution and let all thoughts of other tactics dissipate along with our hunger.
It would also give you time to think of your letter. The specifics of the letter I leave to you, the more the words truly reflect your thoughts the more weight it would carry when they read it and hear your voice and authority in it. I would, however, suggest including a few specifics regarding re-integration and how you view the lasting peace we are bringing them. Make sure they see that these are not just words, but that we are creating an actual blueprint to move forward on. Something they can respond to and build off of.
Don't just tell them you want to make things right, show them that you are already preparing that way forward for your people. We've been to realms where the dead and living have built a peaceful community together, we know it can work and are happy to share what we saw if it helps. I would also suggest you offer to add some of there ranks to your counsel so they know they have a voice and are still a part of your world you are rebuilding.

Tink tries to get a read on the advisors. Hopefully there is nothing more than just bickering. She tries to throw in a little flattery and keep the advisors on-side.
"It's wise to keep people of differing opinions as your advisors. Always better to have others speak their mind and offer suggestions rather than just agreeing with everything you have to say"
Sense Motive: 36
DM Mitch Friday September 27th, 2019 8:40:34 AM Restlin is insulted for Zane and isn’t so sure the demons will stay away so easily. Zane offers counterpoints to Mercutio’s statement. Garret is all ready for food Sesha empathizes with the skeletons and offers some suggestions. Wyarr stresses that they want peace. Beri gives some advice. Bosk asks about their hierarchy and what happens after. Tink tries to get a read on the advisors.
Queen Esmerald says to Restlin, “My hand keeps me appraised as to conditions in the field with respect to Skeletal Trooper movements when we get information. She also has a feelers out with respect to the demons. If they do show up again I will share the intel with you but as for now there has been nothing.” Mercutio says to Zane, “Perhaps I owe you an apology. I meant no insult I just thought you looked like you could handle yourself and my words might not have been as carefully selected as I wanted them.” Esmerald says to Sesha, “I am not sure if full integration is possible at least from the beginning. I was thinking we could offer them the resources to build a separate city nearby Crystal City that could be their own. We would of course extend trade to the Skeletal Trooper city and let them visit Crystal City. As for your suggestion of having Skeletal Trooper Peacekeepers and trainers, I have not necessarily authorized a guard force. As for their demanding my life in exchange for peace, I cannot accept that offer. I do not know if I can be killed since removing my heart didn’t do the trick nor do I know that if I am killed if the protections that my people enjoy would stay. The aura of calm the walls exude is currently being rationed but when I turn it on it is very hard to commit violence inside the walls. The problem is if the walls fall then there goes the field.”
Queen Esmerald says to Wyaar, “Glad to hear it. Hopefully we can make the peaceful solution work so it won’t come back to plan B.”
Queen Esmerald says to Beri, “I will take your counsel in mind.”
“Indeed even if we acomplish peace there will be many more challenges.” she replies to Bosk.
The advisors nod at Tink’s comment.
She claps her hands and dinner starts. The first course is a rich cauliflower bisque. The second course consists of meat pastries. The third course is a salad. The main course is a tiny warbler stuffed in a bunting, inserted in a lark, squeezed in a thrush, thrown in a quail, inserted in a lapwing, introduced to a plover, piled into a partridge, wormed into a woodcock, shoehorned into a teal, kicked into a guinea fowl, rammed inside a duck, shoved into a chicken, jammed up in a pheasant, wedged deep inside a goose, logged into a turkey, crammed up into a Great Bustard. The 17 bird monstrosity is of course carved and shared amongst the diners. Dessert is chocolate mousse in a dark chocolate edible cup. To drink there are several wine and ale options as well as water and a chilled apple juice. Everyone is able to eat their fill.
As the mousse is being served Esmerald says, “I trust everyone has had enough to eat and drink? Isabelle and Corgan please share your information with the Iron Dragons with respect to neutral meeting grounds go.” Corgan says, “Yes well the caravans are being extra careful lately so I don’t have recent information regarding some of these towns and settlements but here, here and here are places where a meeting could potentially happen. I’m not sure if these settlements are still standing though.” Corgan points out several points on a map
Isabelle says, “2 of those settlements have fallen to the Skeletal Troopers. The third is currently being held by a different faction of freesteaders that previously have indicated distrust and acted aggressively. I do have an idea where you could meet. There is a cave on the western end of this forest or there is a shrine to the north. Both places appear to be neutral and out of the way of settlements. Which one is the better option I can’t say. The choice is ultimately yours.”

He even manages to cover his mouth (one time) when he burps. Sure, some food misses his mouth by a little bit and slobbers down the front of him, but he either doesn't notice or doesn't mind. He slows down after a lot of bird, but gets a second wind when the mousee shows up. He eats every drop and then picks up the cup and licks the bottom to ensure he's gotten every drop. He slumps back in his chair and it is mere moments before his eyeslids are drooping, the food coma setting in already. His butt starts to slide in his chair and he nearly falls out of it. Beri finishes the meal, marveling at how they were able to combine so many birds into one dish and have each layer remain distinct. As they eat and talk Beri considers the possible options for meeting places.
The shrine would likely provide less danger of ambush and add more feeling of it being a sacred place. Assuming the shrine is dedicated to something that wouldn't go counter to what we are trying to accomplish and is a shrine to something generally viewed as good then I think that may be the best option.

DM Mitch Monday September 30th, 2019 6:47:59 AM Garret eats himself into a food coma. Zane cleans up garret and says the settlement seems like a good place to meet. Restlin thought the cave was good but also thought Zane had good points. Wyarr agrees with Zane and points out the Freesteaders should be included. Sesha is concerned about meeting in a shrine that might empower the undead. Beri likes the shrine option Tink also likes the shrine.
Isabelle says to Zane and Wyaar, “You don’t seem to understand. Some of our people split off after we vanquished our enemies but before the city was founded. Some came to their senses later but opted to not return to the city. They founded free settlements and it was them we traded with for the most part. The others we trade with are people who came from other continents, but they are a smaller group. Some of those who used to be counted amongst our number lost their way and never left the ways of violence. If they attack us we retreat and pretty much avoid the area. That settlement is one such area. It is possible the Skeletal Troopers will either ignore them or seek common cause with them. We used to try to bring the violent ones back into the fold through the use of the Queen’s calming abilities but that was before our current difficulties.” Corgan says, “The shrine is a wayfarer’s shrine. It isn’t necessarily dedicated to a deity per se but to the idea of safe travel. Travelers stop by their to seek a blessing of safe travel. It is a neutral place.”
Queen Esmerald says to Bosk, “It occurs to me I didn’t answer your question fully before we started eating. The Skeletal troopers used to be divided into regiments but it seems like Wenzel, their leader was elected from what we can gather. I’m not quite sure if we could marry the Skeletal Troopers as one of the goals of marriage is procreation and the Skeletal Troopers can’t bear or sire children. As for a guarantee that it won’t happen again, I have no magical authority anymore to order them around, therefore that is a foregone conclusion. I have given up the pact, surely they must know this considering I haven’t used its power to stop them. As for having their number among court, I would be open to including a representative or two from their number amongst my Small Counsel. As I’ve previously indicated ideally I’d like to treat them essentially like favored free steaders to start. I’d cede them land and help them found their own settlement. We would have open trade and they’d be welcome to visit Crystal City. Ideally as time wore on and we’ve proven to each other that things have changed they could migrate from their settlement to Crystal City and those that wanted to could migrate from Crystal City to live with them.”
Mercutio adds, “If the queen can successfully sue for peace then I’d like to work with the Skeletal Troopers to form a guard force. Obviously there is some things that Corgan, Queen Esmerald and I would have to work out with respect to finances but if the Skeletal Troopers are living weapons then I wouldn’t have to commission new weapons to be built.”
Esmerald says, “Ideally we’d help them move beyond their warlike ways, Mercutio. I think a guard force with you at its head would be too much like old times potentially. I don’t think we should hold authority over them in that way. We can discuss this later, if and when we successfully negotiate a peace and of course the Skeletal Troopers themselves would also have to weigh in on this proposal but I think it is a bad idea to do things that would encourage people to think of them as walking-weapons in the vein of not allowing what happened the first time to happen again.”
Queen Esmerald then says to everyone, “I would like some time to collect my thoughts and write the missive to the Skeletal Troopers. I will return shortly when I have written it and you can tell me if it will suffice or how I should change it. In the meantime, please finalize the other details with Corgan, Mercutio and Isabelle”

The druid accepts a cup of coffee as the discuss their plans over their rings, at least the parts relating to the queen's pact..
I think the heart is just the embodiment of the pact with the demons. The skeletons survived the ending of the previous two ruler's pact, and the removal of her heart. I don't get the impression that the lives of the skeletons are entwined with it, just the ability to control them.
I also don't think the demons are able to simple make another pact with anyone else, otherwise they already would have. It would seem they are somehow bound to the queen's bloodline, likely something tied to the initial pact that was made.
DM Mitch Tuesday October 1st, 2019 7:18:42 AM Garret mumbles ideas in his sleep. Zane points out that peace might require everyone at the negotiating table. He wonders about the heart and the undead over the rings Restlin stays quiet. Wyarr points out the benefit of treaties. Beri makes some points over the rings.
Isabelle looks at Zane and sighs, “You can try to bring the violent separatist to the table but they probably will attack you on sight. As for the foreigners, they are allowed to lease their coastal trading settlement farm, mine and lumber yard at the pleasure of the Queen. While they are affected by the events that are happening they don’t necessarily have a say in them. Whether they should be included is ultimately Esmerald’s call as she has currently not given them any privilege save for the ability to pay the lease and reap a taxed bounty from the land. She has temporarily extended to the Captain of one of their trading vessels diplomatic immunity as he negotiated the original lease / tax deal but he isn’t always present at their settlement.”
Mercutio adds, “They are required to abide by our rules with respect to weapons while on our shores. I’m fairly certain they do have some weapons stashed about the ships they anchor off the coast and row ashore in row boats but any ship that docks at the dock near the settlement is subject to searching and any ship that has been searched has proven to honor our traditions so far.”
Corgan says, “I can tell you that their coin is good. Granted they haven’t been producing as much food, lumber, or metal since our conflict with the Skeletal Troopers started. They are in the process of building wooden fortifications for their settlement. They are very industrious. The queen does not have a problem with this.”
Mercutio says to Wyaar, “Aye, lad. Good man. That is why I pressure her so to let me develop a plan B in case her calming effect fails but she fears becoming who she was so much that she won’t even contemplate the idea. Perhaps if she no longer had to deal with the temptation of the pact she’d allow our people some means of being able to defend themselves if they needed it. I do think if we can pull off peace with the Skeletal Troopers then they could be our defense force potentially. It might make for a compromise we could all live with, still there would be that artifact that would allow her to resume the pact hanging over all our heads so she probably won’t allow it.”
The Queen has still not returned. It has been about 20 minutes since she left the table.
She returns shortly later and passes around her letter it reads:
Dear Wenzel and the rest of the Company of Skeletal Troopers,
Words cannot convey how terrible I feel about the way I betrayed you by giving you an order to imprison yourselves indefinitely. I know that you are angry with me and that is why we are in our current state of conflict. I want to change things moving forward. You were heroes of our people, our fallen given new life and instrumental in winning this land for us. It is time that you too benefited fully from the victory we won. To that end I would like the bearers of this note to meet with you in neutral territory to discuss a peace treaty. If you agree to the standard terms of parlay then I too would be willing to be present but I need assurances I will not be attacked on sight. In the interest of a lasting peace between our people I would like to use the resources of Crystal City to help you build a city of your own. You would have full autonomy if you so desired and could be your own city-state or you could become an extension of the Queendom if you would prefer but the choice is ultimately your own. I made a decision on your behalf to both our detriments in the past so moving forward I would seek to always obtain your consent in anything that we do together. It would be my hope that we could move beyond this current state of conflict as equals with a common past and maybe one day the Crystal City and your new city state could become one again if we all agree to it. In the interest of seeing a better future for our 2 peoples I would open with your approval new seats on my Small Council that would be representatives of your people in Crystal City. If we can put this conflict behind us I would like to see us becoming trade partners with your people being given special status within Crystal City if any of you decide to visit. I would like any members of your number added to my Small Council to focus on how we could improve the relations between us. I await your response to the bearers of this letter and it is my sincere hope to be able to meet with you in person to discuss terms.

Everyone seems to like the letter and agree that they have a decent plan. The Queen seeing a sleeping Garret says to all gathered, “I think we should adjourn for tonight. Tomorrow you can seek out the Skeletal Troopers and deliver my missive under a flag of truce. Do whatever preparations you feel are appropriate.”
"Well then, we shall prepare for war and hope for peace. Thank you for being a wonderful Hostess."
Sesha, as usual leads her preparations with a Heroes Feast. (Everyone gets 11 temp hp in addition to the regular effects, lasts 24 hours). She makes the meal, but has Bosk sample it, especially the drinks. Those are his specialty!
She renews her contingency spell. If something goes wrong, it will bring her back her, instead of to her lab with her grown clone. She then renews all of her 24 hour spells, but still feels listless.
"What would you do here, Little Spirit?"
Sesha thinks for a minute, then realizes how long its been since she talked to Serenbeth. She takes the time to set up silver candles, and find a quiet corner of her room. She arranges a few items that bring her closer to her Power, a bit of incense that smells like Byrn Baraz, dusty and rustic. A bit of a funeral gown, and a childs block, carved with pictures of cartoony monsters.
Ready, she casts her divination spell.
"Hello Little Spirit. It's me again, your doting child. I've been gone so long from the coven, and my travels have brought me far from our little church. Are you well? Are you getting along with the other witches? Hopefully Y'zargo isn't up to too much trouble."
Sesha continues on thus for a long while, feeling the need to anchor herself spiritually once more. Finally, she comes to the point of the spell.
"Serenbeth, thus I ask, are the Skeletal Troopers going to inflict violence no matter what we do? Can they be swayed?"
Then she will cast a second divination, and ask the same question, relating to the seperatists.
"Thank you, Little Spirit. Good night."
In the morning, she also casts the greater magic weapons and enhanced armor spells, as requested for the others. (Nab a +5 if you need it!)

Garret is carried off to bed by some servant or other. Restlin votes for tink to talk. Bosk asks about the magic abilities of the other groups.
In response to her first question regarding the Skeletal Trooper inflicting violence no matter what they do the answer is, "They have free will."
In response to the second question regarding the Separatists the answer is "They are highly territorial."
The next morning Isabelle, The Queen's hand is there to greet you. She bears a map. She points to a spot on it and says, "This is where the separatist freeholders are. I'd advise you to steer clear of them as they generally attack all who would approach. She then points to another area closer to where you are than the freeholder's outpost and in almost the opposite direction says, "The latest intel we have on Skeletal Trooper movements is there is a contingent of them here. If you approach them under the flag of truce they should hear you out. What they do after they receive your letter from the Queen is anyone’s guess but Esmerald seems to think they’ll consider it"

Sesha considers their surroundings. If they aren't surrounded by weapon toting undead, then she wouldn't worry. As it were, they had a number of defenses against such enemies.
She herself, had once considered the path of necromancy. She had sought knowledge of raising undead, mostly animals and beasts, never humanoids, but decided to abandon the pursuit when she got a grasp on just how many worshipers of Gargul existed, and thus, how short lived her pursuits would have been.

Wyarr wonders about different weapon types. Bosk tries to make it absolutely clear that they’re after peace.
The speaker calls out, “Wenzel you better take a look at this.” He then turns back to Tink and says, “My name is Skelter. I do have a question. Just how committed to peace is the queen? Some of us want nothing more than to see her dead. I don’t think any lasting peace can be had as long as many of our number seek the death of the leader of the other side.”
In the span of moments since Skelter asked the question an imposing figure appears with a keen glint in his eye. He says, “Skelter what do we have here? Guests from a far off land? Under a flag of truce? Interesting.”
“Lord Wenzel. Sir. These emissaries bring a missive for you from Queen Esmerald. Apparently she seeks to treat with us in order to put an end to hostilities. I must say sir, I thought she’d return to the pact and you’d be destroyed and the rest of us enslaved. I’d say I think we have their backs to the wall.
Wenzel responds to Skelter, “Perhaps we do, perhaps we don’t; let me read that missive.”
He stands there for a long moment reading and then he says, “Well we can meet to discuss terms.” he indicates himself Skelter, a few other Skeleton Troopers and you, “...but the Queen is not invited. He breaks his silence. "If you don't mind, we're only working with one side of the story here. That's no way to begin talks. Maybe you can tell us your story in your own words? Can't very well claim we're neutral if we're only backing up one horse, right?"

Beri points off in the direction that he believes the shrine is in
We were told that there was a wayfarer’s shrine not far from here that would be a safe neutral location, if that would be acceptable to you.
One quick note, you had said that you do not trust the queen. We know here past actions were deplorable, but we witnessed her turn down renewing the pact. I know she is trying to make amends, but I'm also one to be overly cautions to make sure I'm not being manipliated. Is there anything beyond bad blood that would make you not trust her actions? Again, I do trust her or we wouldn't be here, but as Restlin mentioned, we have only her side of the story.
"I mean, sure we are happy to talk about it. But whomever leads you needs to ask themselves the same question. Are you willing to do anything for peace and survival?"
She looks around.
"The queens willing to go so far for her people as to have created you. She's willing to treat with devils. She's willing to trust us, extraplanar outsiders who have a long resume of being good people, but that's all."
She takes a break, then continues.
"So all in all, I think that means that if you DONT treat in peace, she can probably find a person to play the agent of your destruction, even if it isn't us. It's what she, as a responsible ruler, is willing to do."
And finally, she connects the dots.
"So are you, or whoever is in control here, willing to preserve your kind? Are you willing to pacify, render harmless, or persuade your malcontents and accept the olive branch? Sure, it is difficult having to trust someone you hate, or did you wrong once, but...well...that's what rulers and leaders do, you know. Is ensure survival of their charges as long as possible."
She lets her mind settle, and curses her impulsiveness for not the first time.
"If everyone is on the same page, then real discussion can happen."

The nearest Skeleton Trooper to Garret accepts the gift. Sniffs it. Then asks Garret, "What am I supposed to do with this?"
Wenzel says to those asking for 'their side of the story', "Well we were made from the remains of their dead to fight a war on their behalf. In all fairness we probably shouldn't exist and yet here we are. When the war was over the queen decided she didn't want us around anymore and ordered us to seal ourselves in a tomb and stay there. We did just that. A torpor took over us after we had followed the command to bury ourselves in there. One day the torpor left and we could move again. We discussed amongst ourselves what to do next and we decided we wanted to come out, so that is what we did. Lo and behold we found the war really was over, our side had won and the Queen had supposedly gone all peacenik. We had another discussion and we decided that she might not be using the pact now and she may not want to use it now, but as long as she and whatever artifact the pact is bound to exist we are one bad day away from her taking the pact up again and being disposable. Some of us feel that as long as she exists and has the capacity to re-enter the pact we are one bad day away from being her slaves."
To Sesha Wenzel replies, "We'd rather be destroyed as free beings than see a peace that is one bad day away from enslaving us all. If there is to be peace then the pact can never be engaged in again. The only way we currently see to ensure that is if the queen is no longer able to partake in the pact because she no longer exists. Can you guarantee another way that does not involve the destruction of the queen to ensure the pact cannot be entered in again?"
To Bosk and Beri Wenzel says, "She says she doesn't want to use the pact unless all other options have failed, therefore the power of the pact is still on the table with respect to this conflict albeit as a move of last resort or so she says. What happens in the next conflict? Will she really be so hesitant to use it then? Is the only reason we aren't under her thumb now because you lot showed up? We would prefer peace to war as we are tired of this constant warring though what other aptitudes we may have besides war given our nature we'd have to discover but we prefer the freedom of being our own masters and knowing that nothing can change that to a peace that is only as good as the Queen's willpower holds out. She might be tough but she has a breaking point."

Bosk chews his lip. You do know that killing the queen will not free you, but rather it is the artifact that must be destroyed...not impossible...but more difficult than you imagine. The necromancer's necklace required a god's staff to destroy it, but this one could be taken to the place realms over lap and destroyed...we have the ritual needed... Though the risk to us is likely greater than facing an undead army.

"if the queen really wants peace I think she would be willing" Wyaar agrees over the ring.
Sesha is pleased with the newest answer. It meant that negotiation was still on the table. At this point, she backs off while the others handle the questions and answers.
DM Hugh - Of Skeletons and Diplomacy Thursday October 10th, 2019 11:45:01 PM Restlin asks for clarification with respect to the Skeletal Troopers problem with the Queen and if they can figure out a way that prevents the Skeletal Troopers from being used if the queen still has to die.
Zane points out how they can get three effects with one action if the queen agrees to give them the heart and they take one of the troopers to make sure.
Garret agrees with Zane over the rings wondering if the queen will just give them the heart. He then explains the soldier he gave the meat to should chew it.
Bosk points out that killing the queen will not free them but destroying the artifact would and they have a way that should accomplish that it would just be more risky than facing an undead hoarde.
Beri asks if destroying the artifact would accomplish the goal as an alternative since he thinks that could be accomplished.
Tink asks the Skeletal Troopers about the demons they encountered in the well paying attention to their reaction.
Wyaar points out over the rings that the queen should be willing to give them the artifact if she wants peace.
Sesha is pleased with the answers she received. She lets the others handle things.
Wenzel says to Restlin, "There may be some who yet lust for her blood, but if you could ensure that our freedom from pact enslavement is guaranteed then I think those holdouts could be made to see reason and accept an alternative solution."
The soldier starts chewing the meat and says, "I wish I could taste the meat like my constituent bodies could when they were alive."
Wenzel says to Bosk, "The way we understand things there is the artifact and there is the queen and the 2 of them combined constitute the threat of the pact. We don't really know where the artifact is or what it even looks like so going after that would be difficult. The queen is but a fairy, one skilled in battle but she is physically weaker than us so in theory we could end her if ever engaged in a pitched battle and she did not invoke the power of the pact."
Wenzel says to Beri, "If you can facilitate that that should work as I said We'd have to work on the hold out but the majority should be able to live with that deal."
Tink gets the sense that about 1 in 5 skeletal troopers are more militant towards the queen in their demeanor than Wenzel is. 2 seem to be as open as Wenzel and the other 2 seem to be ambivalent.
Wenzel says to Tink, "We have been newly freed from the imprisonment the Queen inflicted. We have not seen the demons you spoke of recently. We were aware they were the entities that the pact was with. Although from what we understand their knowledge led to our existence, we bear no love for them. If you are seeking them out to end them and we knew aught that could help you we would share it but sadly we don't."
Tink senses no deception in the statement.
Wenzel says to the group, "Do you have any other questions? I will need a little time to gather those I need for the parlay at the wayfarer's shrine. Our moratorium on the queen being present stands until we can guarantee the pact has been defeated. Once she no longer holds the power to enslave us with a whim then we will treat with her directly. Until that time we are comfortable dealing with you. This is our condition. Take it to the queen, secure whatever additional power you need to make the negotiations. The same goes for members of the Queen's council save for Mercutio. He seemed like an honorable sort. We would not object to his presence. DM Hugh - Of Skeletons and Diplomacy Saturday October 12th, 2019 1:18:24 AM Garret suggests chewing could be enjoyable to his new skeletal friend but says he's all about eating.
Restlin says nothing happy with how things have turned out. He has an idea how to deal with the queen.
Beri suggests the queen will accept those term and asks if it would help if one of them destroyed the object of the pact.
Tink suggests they all be on guard for the demons. She thinks it is interesting they have not contacted the skeletons. She then agrees with Beri and asks how they may contact them should further arrangements be necessary.
Zane suggests to Garret that his skeletal friend is permanently hungry.
Sesha has nothing else to add.
Wenzel says to Beri, "Now that you mention it, if that is possible then yes we would like to be the ones to end the pact by destroying said object. I think that would go far in convincing the hold outs to accept the terms."
In reply to Tink Wenzel gestures to a nearby Skeletal trooper and he takes out a small chest. Inside of it are 2 coins. He grabs one and holds it up to Tink, "This coin has been magicked to allow for the person holding it to be able to communicate with the person holding its twin even over great distance and vice versa. I will hold the twin, and one of you will hold it. Should you need to reach us just use the coin. Not that I think I have to tell you this as you seem honorable but we will know if you attempt to use this coin for any type of spy craft or treachery. If one seeks to communicate with the holder of the other the coin will vibrate. Speak the command word "Moshi Moshi" and the connection will be established. This command word answers the call directed at the coin or causes a call to be made on the other coin.
Plans are made, an agreement to meet at the wayfarer's shrine is set and you can return to the Queen having made plans for a parlay at the shrine.
The return back to the Crystal City is uneventful and the gate is thrown open at your return. "Enter Quickly!" the guard calls out and you oblige.
You are ushered to the palace grounds and taken immediately to the Queen's council chamber. She is sitting with Mercutio, Corgan and Isabelle.
"What news have you to report of the Skeletal Troopers? Will they accept the parlay at the shrine? What of my presence? Will they treat with me directly or do they still demand my head?" She says looking expectantly at you.

Beri responds over the link. If the skeleton destroys it BEFORE the ceremony there would be a problem. But I believe they meet our needs for the ceremony, and if I remember the queen did not seem to qualify.
DM Hugh - A meeting with the Queen Monday October 14th, 2019 10:42:40 PM Bosk stands back and lets the others do the talking.
Tink points out how Wenzel seemed receptive of peace but that some of the warriors would prefer not to interact with the Queen and Tink agrees. She does point out that Mercutio would be welcome at the negotiations.
Wyaar points out that some of the Skeletal Troopers are worried that the queen won't make any concessions but they are willing to talk and listen.
Restlin points out that in order for peace to be achieved any possible means of controlling them must be destroyed.
Zane suggests the queen could willingly help them over the rings and it would go a long way toward convincing the skeletons.
Garret took a wrong turn and is slightly late to the meeting.
Beri suggests if the Skeletons destroy the heart too soon it would be a problem for their ceremony.
Queen Esmerald says to the Iron Dragons, "What is it they are asking me to do? Destroy the pact artifact that was once my heart? I tried that once and it would not break. Granted the Skeletal Troopers possess a strength beyond my own but I don't think brute force will work. Perhaps some magic can be brought to bear against it. Have you any idea? I'd gladly be rid of the cursed thing if it would secure peace."
To Mercutio she says, "What say you old friend? Will you go in my stead with these Iron Dragons to the negotiation table? As previously stated I will not give my life for peace for I feel my death would imperil the Crystal City. I will cede to the destruction of the artifact if it in fact be destroyed. I am willing to give them resources needed to establish their own home, whether they seek full autonomy or a place in the Queendom the choice is theirs. If they want autonomy I'd offer them trade and travel to the Crystal City and spots on my council will be reserved for their emissaries. These are the things I have authorized."
Mercutio says, "If you trust me to be present at negotiations I would be honored my liege. The thing is diplomacy and negotiations were never my strong suit unless you count aggressive negotiations with swords. I will bear witness and provide moral support but I believe Restlin, Katinka and the rest of the Iron Dragons should take the lead here as they seem much more diplomatic than myself."
The Queen replies, "So be it."
She looks back to the Iron Dragons and says, "What say you then? Will you escort Mercutio my royal witness to the negotiations that you will carry out on my behalf. You know what I have authorized. If they demand anything else, I would wish to be consulted as I think I'm being more than fair. Some things requested may seem innocuous but their could be implications to what they ask so I would prefer to be consulted."
She motions and a potted sapling is brought out. "If you need to contact me say No-ky-a into this plant and it will open up a communication channel between us. If I need to contact you the leaves will russle and you can say the same command to receive my sending. Is there anything else you need prior to negotiations or anything you'd recommend with respect to offering the Skeletal Troopers?"

Tink is very pleased with the result "This is excellent news, your majesty. Finer points may come up in the discussions, so we will contact you should anything come up that Mercutio is not authorized to negotiate"
Tink pauses for a moment.
"Uh, if we have the coin that allows us to communicate with Wenzel and his troops, why not start the negotiations right here and now? We can hash out the details via the coin and when terms are agreed we take it from there? No need to journey out in the open or be at risk, and we can take as long as needed to reach an agreement"
Sesha figures the only thing stopping them from working everything out via plant-line is that some people just prefer face to face. Otherwise, its a sound idea.

We think he's a rogue god...jury's still out on that one. Either way we need to bust him out of his prison and deal with him. You seem to be a good and just ruler. DM Hugh - A meeting with the Queen Wednesday October 16th, 2019 12:51:11 AM Tink is most pleased. She agrees to contacting the queen via plant and suggests the start the negotiations using the coins.
Sesha thinks that some people prefer negotiating face to face.
Restlin suggests they have a solution to the conundrum of destroying the heart and tells the queen what their goals are.
Garret suggests they take the heart with them so the skeletons will fail at destroying it but they can demonstrate the queen's good will."
Zane advises against Garret's suggestion as a small chance of success could still see them losing the heart but instead they inform the skeletons why they came and seek out a volunteer for the ritual amongst their number.
Wyaar agrees with the others.
Beri agrees and suggests that they tell their would be volunteer that safety is not guaranteed after the ritual but that seeing a second corrupting force destroyed might be an icing on the cake.
Bosk notes the important parts have been covered.
Queen Esmerald says to Tink, "You may try to contact Wenzel with your suggestion, but they might suspect a trick in the changing of the terms. As long as the Skeletal Troopers keep their word the only thing really out there of any concern is the occasional wild beast and territorial freesteader fey folk who have left the fold. The shrine is not near any rogue freesteadings so you should be ok there. I'm sure the 8 of you and Mercutio are enough to hold the shrine from any beast. Mercutio, being away from the calming effects of the Emerald City would be free to engage in combat in the event that you were threatened by a beast. It may be wrong for me to encourage it, but I've had your old armor and sword removed from storage in the treasury and seen it polished. I know these things are technically banned but your armor and sword were such nice pieces I couldn't bear to see them destroyed. I"m a sentimental fool in that way. I've had the sword slightly altered to be bejeweled so that it looks ceremonial but I can assure you it is quite functional still. Corgan will accompany you outside the gate with Isabelle and they will give you the crates containing these items outside the gates of the city. They will also meet you outside the city on the way home to take possession of them again as your armor and weapon are only being released to protect you on this mission, should things turn hairy."
To Restlin she says, "Secure peace with the skeletons and you may have my heart to take with you when you go. As to the heart itself tell them that you have seen with your own eyes where it is stored and it is securely away from the Crystal City. Assuming you negotiate a peace and you have a ritual participant in tow on your way back you may stop at the well we met in and claim your prize,"
Esmerald says, "Contact Wenzel if you wish regarding long distance negotiations and then make any preparations you need for the journey to the shrine,"

"Yea, I think we're good, Tink...actually, wait. Your majesty, just how well can Mercutio handle himself? Do we need to be overly concerned with protecting him, or can he take care of himself?"

Garret looks and nods at the queen Wyaar says he is ready. Zane indicates his readiness Sesha quips that even with her near him he has queen’s offering him their hearts. Beri is ready to head out too.
Mercutio while seemingly older has the look about him of someone who does know how to handle himself in combat though it has been awhile since he had seen any. Still though it doesn’t take that much to get back into it.
You get a hold of Wenzel using the coins and he is eager to begin negotiations face to face. He has assembled the officers he would like to be with him and is enroute to the shrine himself.
You set out for the shrine. Corgan and Isabelle meet up with you outside of the city and Mercutio puts his plate mail on and tests his bastard sword with a few strokes. He grins and says, “This is much better. Who knows maybe once the threat of the pact is gone Esmerald will relax and let us defend ourselves again. I suspect it is only her fondness for me that let me have my arms and armor released as it wouldn’t do for me to be caught unawares.”
You make good time reaching the wayfarer’s shrine and the trip is uneventful.
You have beaten Wenzel’s contingent to the shrine.

Restlin sighs at his paramour. "Whatever did you do in previous lives to warrant having such a philanderer as your betrothed?" He smiles and wraps an arm around her waist as they set off.
...time passes!...
He makes small talk with Mercutio as they walk, trying to get a read on him. Everyone's seemed so nice; he's curious to see what they're like outside the city-wide no violence zone.
"What's the story with these offerings?" he asks. "Does someone collect them, or are they here for any travelers who need them?" He notes with some appreciation how similar that sentiment is to Wardd's. He pulls off his pack and digs through his things. He pulls 50' of rope from it, and places it in front of the statue*.
*Assuming that's an appropriate offering. If not, he doesn't.

Zane give a nod to the statue as they arrive, then takes a look around getting an idea of the layout the area. "I don't expect our friends to be any trouble, but we do have those Steaders out there and with all of our traveling back and forth as well as the Skeleton's traveling about, I wouldn't be shocked if either or both of our travels has been seen. We should be prepared just in case they attack, I'd also suggest we alert the Skeleton contingent of those worried when they arrive, so it'll not be a surprise to them."

Tink uses the coin to contact Wenzel "We are at the shrine and eagerly await your arrival. Mercutio is with us, and no other"
She has a quick look at the altar and the offerings, before ascending 40ft in the air for a better view of the surrounds.

Beri transforms into an air elemental and floats up to confirm there is nobody unexpected hiding or traps laid about for them. He pays special attention for any signs of demons. He will also let the others know how far off their guest are.

He then calls out to Tink over their rings: Tink, on the off chance there is a nasty surprise waiting for us be ready to tell them over the coins asap, we don't want them to walk in on combat and get the wrong impression.
Only slightly agitated she wasted on of her stronger spell slots, Sesha is willing to let things play a little this time before she casts anything stronger than some lower spell level buffs.
DM Hugh - The Shrine Friday October 18th, 2019 12:09:10 AM Restlin makes small talk with Mercutio as they travel. He tries to get a read on the man outside of the effects of the Crystal City. When they reach the shrine he asks about the offerings at the foot of the statue.
Garret takes a seat at one of the tables and looks around expectantly for a waiter.
Wyaar searches the area for traps and other hidden things.
Zane suggests they be prepared in case of an attack and also to warn the skeletons so they aren't caught unawares.
Tink lets the skeletons know they are at the shrine and ascends 40 feet to get an aerial view.
Beri also ascends to the air and looks out for any threats like the demons. He suggests that Tink be ready to warn the skeletons in case they get attacked.
Sesha compliments Beri and uses some low level buffs.
During the trip to the Shrine Mercutio regals Restlin of tales of exploits from the war as well as bawdy tales from his youth. When Restlin asks about the statue the man says, "Good eye. Yes the statue acts as a kind of leave what you can, take what you need area. Rope is a good offering."
No waiter ever shows up at Garret's table.
Wyaar does not find any threats on the ground nor secret passageways or hidey holes. This is a rather WYSIWYG area.
Wenzel responds to Tink that his contingent should be joining them shortly.
Tink observes the statue tradition is similar to Waard's back home.
Beri and Tink do not observe any threats from the air and are able to get a birds eye view of the Skeletal contingent approach.
Wenzel is joined by Skelter and 7 others.
The contingent arrives at the shrine and Wenzel says, "Hello again Iron Dragons and Mercutio. I thought it fitting our numbers were matched and beside my second Skelter here we have elected 7 representatives to negotiate the peace. I believe you know Skelter. These are Aerin, Piper, Blade, Sly, Cujo, Wilkins and Ouivel" at each of the skeletal troopers he brought with him.
Wenzel places a small canister at the foot of the statue. "I think leaving an offering is the least we could do to thank this place for being here so that we could meet."
"Mercutio, it is nice to see you again. How long has it been?" Wenzel asks
Mercutio says, "Too long. I wish things could have been different. We did see some action during the war together. I'm mereley here to act as a royal witness and lend some authority to the Iron Dragons. You know me Wenzel, I'm more of a blunt instrument than anything else. The Iron Dragons will take point in the negotiations and should you request something we aren't authorized to approve we do have a way to contact her majesty quickly in order to discuss. Shall we get to business?"
Wenzel replies, "Yes I'm interested in hearing more about your proposal to destroy the artifact by the hands of one of our number. What can you offer on that front?"
He looks expectantly at you.

Restlin's heartened by Wenzel and Mercutio's friendliness. He decides to start talking. "Right, pleasure to meet you all, first off. We do have a way of destroying the heart for good. Stroke of luck really, since it's exactly what we came to this world to find.
"We have a rogue deity of sorts back in our world. He was locked away many years ago with a...well, with a pretty convoluted scheme. We've spent a great deal of effort tracking down the who's and what's that we need; one of those what's is a powerful heart of goodness." He puts up his hands. "Philosophy of and reaction to the Queen's actions over your shared histories aside, the heart does fit our needs. It will be destroyed in the ritual. Plus, if for some reason it survives, we have a specifically tailored demiplane in our tower we use to dispose of cursed and evil magics. We throw it in there, it is never coming out.
"Her majesty has already agreed to let us remove the heart from this world should these talks prove fruitful, so let's assume it's a done issue. What other impediments to peace need to be handled?"

Garret sits at the table, his legs swinging back and forth since his feet don't reach the ground. When the group shows up, he smiles at them from the table. When each is introduced by name, he waves at each skeleton. When they are done, he waves to the seats next to him at the table and gestures for them to join him at the table.
Beriothian -- AC:38+4/18/36+4 HP: 258+13/258 Blink: 50% Blur 20% miss, CMD = 23 Friday October 18th, 2019 10:29:44 PM Exactly. It is our understanding that much has been tried in this realm to destroy the heart, and all attempts have failed. As for having one of your number destroy it, this is actually a requirement. You see, the ritual was designed such that the required components and actors could not be found within our realm. Per your question, what we offer is to bring one of you with us to destroy the heart in the ritual, then we can return you afterwards.
Full disclosure, after the ritual there will in all likelihood be a battle between the rogue deity and his counterpart. The short version is a battle between good and evil, though the full story is much more complicated and nuanced. While the ritual itself will be safe, we can't guarantee what will happen after. However, the alternative would be to let the rogue deity escape unchecked at full strength, and that would result in death to any realm he reaches.
One more thing, I believe the coins we used before should be functional. We have used similar communication between the realms. So you should be able to stay informed as to the status of the ritual and have confirmation as soon as the heart is destroyed. Would that satisfy you on this front?

Over the rings,"I think you mean between Unsavory and Evil. I'm not exactly a fan of the one we already have, but the other is down right not wanted at all." Zane refrains from saying that out loud at least....
DM Hugh - The Shrine Saturday October 19th, 2019 12:02:25 AM Bosk lays his own offering at the shrine.
Restlin explains the reason why they came and that the queen has agreed to give them the heart and the ritual they need to perform requires one of the skeletons. He asks what else is needed for peace.
Garret gestures for the skeletal contingent to join his table and they are soon seated with him.
Beri further clairifies Restlin's point and explains the risks involved but that the coin technology should work for communication between realms.
Bosk watches the reactions of the other group
Zane comments over the rings.
Wenzel strokes his chin and says, "Interesting and convenient," To Mercutio he says, "You trust these Iron Dragons when they say they have the ability to destroy the heart?"
He then says, "What of the other ritual participants and presumably any other accouterments that you need. Have they all been gathered? How long would we have to wait before one of us can be done with the pact once and for all?"
Mercutio says to Wenzel, "They've been nothing but honest with us since they got here and they helped talked her majesty off the ledge with respect to actually using the pact, so the way I see it you kind of owe them."
Skelter says, "I volunteer to be our representative assuming we make this deal."
Aerin says, "Can you tell us more of this contingency vault should the ritual itself fail to destroy the heart. Ideally we want it destroyed but if there is a chance the ritual won't work then we need to be extremely sure that locking it up in the vault will prevent anyone from ever recovering it."
Piper says, "We would need to do everything we could to assure the troops that the ritual would work. Remember some are calling for the queen's head as the only way to be truly sure the pact is not a threat."
Blade says, "Assuming we go through with this sticking point what of the resources to build our own autonomous city? What is the queen offering and what guarantee does she provide that we would be sovereign?"
Sly says, "Is the queen going to try to forcibly disarm us the way she has you folks for the most part once we are settled down? Granted we are walking weapons but there are things that can be done to make us less formidable and we do have a natural right to defend ourselves that should be recognized"
Cujo says, "Yes any deal we strike with the queen has to include 3 things. 1) The destruction of the threat of the pact. 2) A guarantee we will never be conscripted against our will and 3) some recognition of our right to bear arms."
Wilkins says, "Mayhap we draft a formal document outlining the rights we wish the queen to recognize with respect to our people?"
Ouivel says, "Tell me more of the positions reserved for us on the Queen's council. What responsibilities would be expected and what privileges granted? If we have this guarantee of rights would the queen respect the rights of our representative in her city or would our representatives be expected to follow the local custom?"
It seems like there are other details to iron out before peace can be achieved after all.
