Interview with a Sea Dragon

DM Carl - Were we expecting visitors?  d20+8=22 ;

Tahni congratulates herself on her correct hunch before making sure Terser is portrait-ready. Terser thinks a good re-braiding of his beard is in order.

Parnell thinks this is a good idea. "Oh, absolutely sir! My collectibles are very popular. These images will travel the entire Wold, so be sure to look your best! I have as much time as you need to prepare, so by all means do whatever sprucing up you'd like."

Bralin's aura calms down a bit, though you wouldn't know to look at him. He keeps waiting.

Fang still isn't sure.

OOC: Only Rill and Tahni mentioned they were looking at the scroll. You all being in telepathic communication, it's reasonable to assume they'd have shared with you.

Rill is happy to cooperate. What's the worst that could happen?

Jozhur, on the other hand, is not. He slinks off into the shadows. Parnell has an artist's eye, but it's not keen enough to notice there's one less Dragon in the room. Jozhur notices time slow, then slow some more, then stop. He hears a familiar chuckle before he feels Gimp's weight on his left shoulder. The imp lies on its side, head propped up on one hand. "I know, right? Your whole life you get by on being unseen, then suddenly the whole world thinks they get a part of ya." Gimp sits up, stretching his arms over his tiny head and dangling his feet over Jozhur's shoulder. "Still, kinda goes with the whole Dragon Consortium territory, ya know? You do realize what ya got yourself into, don't ya? People know you, buddy." He suddenly hops up, then puts his hand on Jozhur's cheek and leans casually, other hand out-splayed for dramatic effect. "Welcome to Bonetown, home of the Legendary Sea Dragons! Kids are gonna play with little toys made in your likeness. You're gonna inspire a lot of people, Jozhur, and people need that inspiration." He shrugs. "Maybe Parnell here can work with keeping your face unseen, though. Might be he can draw you in a hooded cloak?"

Gimp floats into the air before he disappears with the parting words, "but maybe you're overestimating how unknown your face is, dude." His smile lingers in the air a few seconds after the rest of him fades away. Time pops back into motion, no one else the wiser anything just happened.

Parnell pulls out a piece of parchment for each member of the party. With impeccable penmanship, he begins writing. He begins with a simple request.

“Alright! First, if I could have each of you state your full name, along with any nicknames or official titles you might be fond of. Also let me know if you are in any Woldian Organizations!” He thinks for a moment, then adds. “Please be sure the nicknames are child appropriate, as they spread them the most. We wouldn’t want anything unsavory coming from the interview, now would we?”

He skips a line, then starts writing again.

“Then, if you could please tell me where you were born, and if you have any strong memories of that place. It’s okay if they aren’t happy ones. You’d be surprised how many adventurers seem to have dark and catastrophic pasts!”

"Hmmph. I spent most of my youth skipping classes or passed out drunk. I think we can spare the kids those stories. I grew up in the Scab, kicked around the mines for a bit, then the clergy once my birth family kicked me out. No real good memories until Tahni adopted me, and then this lot here.

It's been a while, but some used to call me Wyvern-Slayer. I've still got some bits tied onto my glaive here. And oh, I'm a dues paying member of the WLA."

"Huh. Who know that joining the Dragon Consortium would require forms and bureaucracy?"

"But to answer your request, I am Rillett Savenport, though I go by Rill. I was born and raised here in Bonetown. The Savenports run the closest thing Bonetown has to a bank, so my family was wealthy and influential as I was growing up. It was not until later I learned that the "banking" business in a pirate city has a decidedly dark side when loans are not repaid.

"I was originally apprenticed to be a priest of Ffloy. But it seem that Gargul had other plans. With the untimely death of my two brothers, and an unrelated confrontation with the head priest of Gargul here in town, my path was set.

"I currently serve the Lord of Life and Death as an Eye of Gargul, and am also a member of the Woldian League of Adventurers. But I would say my greatest achievement has been acceptance into the Black Lions, and having been privileged to join them on the journey that has brought us all to this point in our lives. These people here are all my closest friends, and have indeed become my family. I owe them my life many times over, and would certainly lay down my life for theirs without hesitation."

What started off as an interesting experience has taken a turn. This is starting to sound a lot like opening up to a stranger. How much is she really comfortable in sharing?

"Uh, Tahni Wyrmrider. T-a-h-n-i. W-y-r-m-r-i-d-e-r. Born in the Scab. Member of the Sea Dragons and formerly of the Grim Guard, follower of Queen Maab, and Hero of the Woldian League of Adventurers."

That last part almost sounds a little big-noting, but truth be told, the rank she holds in the WLA is labelled that of 'Hero'.

"The Scab will always be in my heart. Is was the source of many, many painful events" Tahni self-consciously tugs the sleeves of her shirt lower to conceal some visible scars "but also some of the happiest times of my life"

You kind of get the feeling that she intends to speak no more of it.

"Travelling with these, my adopted family, may have saved my life"

Bralin remains motionless, but when Tahni finishes, he obliges the scribe's request.

"I am Bralin Stoneminder, born of the Clan Corregan in the Red Hills. My titles are Sea Dragon, Stone Warden, Officer of the Woldian League, Blooded of the Ice Vein, Sheriff in Cinnamon Valley, Sword of Light, and Crimson Shield.

My childhood was uneventful. Later, as a young warrior, I and my hunting party were waylaid by orcs. I fell into a crevasse, but survived in the heart of the mountain due to sustenance provided me by the gods through the rock itself. I carry as a holy symbol an orb from that Chamber, which I commune with daily."

Once she's fully aware of what is going on Fang is eager to participate. After all she sought out becoming a dragon so she could use her influence to help people on the edges of society. Part of that is getting her face known. When it's her turn she tells him, "My name is Fang. I'm the newest member, joining just before we became Dragons. I was also born in the Scab, and everyone I knew died there. I was alone for years trapped in despair until I found Alemi, and now I act as his priest seeking to heal the Wold of it's sicknesses, whether social or physical."

Aexana waits her turn. She's not fond of interviews like this but well... it seems to come with the title...

"I'm Aexana. Born and raised in Plateau City where I have a little shop "Aex's Herbs 'n Spices". Currently Aexana's daughter, Aexiri is in charge of the shop. I was actually considering retirement... after all I'm 73 and look I'm still running around with these youngsters. My plan was to travel the Wold once more and find out if Taurs were to be considered human or animal. Some perhaps would be qualified more like animals but all in all it they are quite civilized. No offence though...
Now when we are done here I am to return home to see how my daughter is doing...

Our heroes speak up, some more eloquently than others. Parnell never once interrupts, but any silence is filled with questions he uses to flesh out the details. He's done these interviews before, and it shows. He's careful not to prod those who obviously aren't comfortable with the whole affair, but spends some time lingering with Fang when she seems excited to participate.

When it's done, he has seven pieces of paper in front of him, though one is blank. Parnell frowns a bit when the introductions stop, then looks around. "Are we missing one? Jozhur, right? Did he have other appointments this morning? Be a shame not to get the whole set finished in one sitting."

He recovers, and his graciousness returns. "Well, hopefully he'll be along shortly. Let's continue. Let't see..." He pulls out a list and scratches off two lines. "You've all already told me which gods you worship, so we'll skip that one. Let's start off with something easy. What would you say is the adventure you're most proud of, and why? Don't be afraid to embellish!"

Gimp was right, this comes with the whole Dragon Consortium deal. Besides, the Black Lions were already a pretty big deal, at least in this region. He slinks out of the shadows, hoping no one noticed he was hiding.

"Sorry, I was, uh...getting cleaned up a bit." He reaches out to shake Parnell's hand, "Jozhur Derile, or just Jozhur. I'm a member of the WLA. Grew up a bit of a trouble maker, in Harbor City. I wanted to start over and caught a ship to the middle seas." He decides to allow his handsome face to be drawn, people will recognize him regardless.

"But for me, it was the journey to the Ice Vein, and defeating a Ja’Kollu Iss’Wyrm there and releasing Frigga'Isa. Plus, we got Bralin out of the deal, so it was a double bonus."

Bralin nods in thanks at Rill's statement.

"You aided my escape from Ice Vein to a tropical land," he notes, with a twinkle in his eye. "More than fair, I think."

the dwarf turns to Parnell.

"I journeyed with a group called the Swords of Light in Cinnamon Valley for a time," he relays. "There, we came upon a schoolhouse that had partially collapsed into a sinkhole. The teacher, and all of her young students had disappeared into the hole.

We mounted a rescue mission, and followed them into the hole, only to find ourselves transported to a strange land."

The dwarf pauses, thinking of something new.

"I confess, finding myself suddenly transported to a strange land is a remarkably common occurrence.

Regardless, we found ourselves in the land of Koshe Marr. An evil place, ruled by a undead queen and plagued with all manner of foul creatures. The teacher's body we found, torn in two. The children we found unharmed, but lost, and then in the thrall of a vampire.

There were triumphs and tragedy those days. But in the end, we returned all but one safe and unharmed ."

Tahni takes a moment to consider the question. There is much she is proud of having accomplished. How do you pick just one?

"If I had to choose, I'd say our journey to Fae Skiemir. That was the test that proved we were worthy of the 'Dragon' title, and the adventure that will always bind us together"

"That I was able to dine alongside Queen Maab and receive her blessing was an added bonus of course"

DM Carl - Were we expecting visitors?
Tuesday November 5th, 2019 10:55:23 AM

Jozhur accepts his fate and steps forward. Parnell's face beams with delight and he quickly starts writing on the last sheet of paper.

Stories are told. They're told of battling Billoopl, of tragedy in Koshe Marr. They're told of Fae Skiemir and colorful plagues. Parnell captures them all, or at least the short versions. He's likely planing on...embellishing them for narrative's sake before they're published. "Your group's membership seems rather tumultuous, especially for a Dragon Consortium group. Most previous groups I've interviewed started adventuring together as neophytes." He chews his pencil a bit. "I can use that. Sort of a 'The Sea Dragons are the peoples' Dragon Group' thing." He makes little air quotes as he talks. "Yes, this will do nicely."

He grabs a piece of paper from the stack and draws out a rough sketch of the seven of you, surrounded by what you assume to be an adoring public. He frowns, balls up the paper, and tosses it back in his bag. He grabs another sheet, draws the seven of you again, then draws in the public sharing drinks with you in a tavern. He smiles and nods approvingly, then adds the drawing to the collected works already placed on the table.

Fang asks about production times. "Well, I have a device that will allow me to produce copies of our trading cards here today. I'll be leaving a full set with you when I leave. Even if you're not collectors, they'll be worth serious coin in a few years. The figurines take some time, but rest assured a full set will be made available to you each at no cost."

Parnell takes just a moment to finish writing up the stories presented. "This is always my favorite part of these meetings," he continues. "Would that I had time to sit and fully pick your brains regarding the specifics of your adventures, but I understand the value of not overstaying my welcome. Let's move along, shall we?

"The artwork we use for our collectibles often includes famous beasts or monsters slain by our subjects. Do any of you have a particularly memorable creature you've slain? No humanoids, please; WoldCo Collectibles does not seek to glorify the killing of sentient noble or ignoble races, though we acknowledge the necessity."

"It may not be particularly exotic, but one of the first monsters I dispatched was a wyvern. It meant a lot to me, since it was one of my first times feeling like a hero. I was protecting a festival of dwarves in the Scab. I still have some of its claws on my glaive here.

I also have some quills from a few of the Bandersnatches we've slain. And a feather from a JubJub bird."

Rill (MarkB) HP 161/161 - AC 29/16/27 - SR 20 - CMD 26
Tuesday November 5th, 2019 12:21:19 PM

Rill will do his best to describe the Ja’Kollu Iss’Wyrm we slew:
An immense white worm with a single circular eye in the center of its head. Wisps of icy fog waft up from between its mandibles.

Then he will help describe Billoopl:
A massive beast, an underwater giant. He is a god, and not only in his own mind. His is powerful beyond your imagination and defeating him is a task only for those who are truly prepared to die. He is vaguely human-shaped with a torso and head but at least fourteen feet tall. Instead of arms, he has absolutely massive lobster claws that hold a trident that is over twelve feet long! Instead of legs, he has the tentacles of an octopus that sway and move as he floats in the water just above the bottom of the sea.

Jozhur
Tuesday November 5th, 2019 1:15:10 PM

Jozhur smiles, "The People's Dragons, I like it". He also approves of the tavern drawing, very fitting.

With the fight against Biloopl already spoken for, Jozhur recounts their slaying of a sea serpent that was terrorizing the middle seas. "It swallowed Bralin, but he hacked his way out through its throat. And then, after we had slain the thing, Rill preserved it and we stuffed it into the 'Fish's cargo hold! We had to break up the cargo hatch area to fit the serpent through."

Bralin slips a faint chuckle at Jozhur's retelling of the battle with the sea serpent.

The dwarf considers the question.

"In my time in Floating City, we once journeyed into the Crying Wood to recover an artifact. There, we encountered an ancient guardian, some kind of wood golem. It had spears for arms, and a tail of three barbed clubs. It had some kind of invisibility as well, for it seemingly attacked from thin air."

Fang thinks about her answer. "The Fearsome Fungus of Florence. Imagine a scarecrow the size of a tree, but covered in a living fungus that spreads and infects everyone it comes across and a scythe sharp enough to cut stone. Dreadful thing."

That purple worm in the Scab was a nasty piece of work, as was the magma elemental. Those duergar were as well, but - evil as they might have been - would fall into the humanoid category. The most dangerous foe though was one of the more recent.

"The colossus that we fought in Fae Skiemir was pretty tough. It was very well armored and our spells couldn't get past it's anti-magic field. Still... we prevailed"

DM Carl - Were we expecting visitors?
Wednesday November 6th, 2019 2:05:25 PM

Terser discusses the first wyvern he killed, and mentions he has some saved parts of wondrous creatures.

"I know people who would pay top dollar for those," Parnell states without looking up from his writing. "Or, if you don't have need of additional wealth, oftentimes such items are donated to charity auctions and the like. Of course, no one would blame you for wanting to hold on to them either."

As Rill describes some of the Sea Dragons' deadlier foes, Parnell quickly produces his drawing instruments and starts sketching. He motions Rill over to check his work as he draws. The speed and quality of the man's artwork is impressive, as is his ability for creating dramatic scenes. When he's finished, the party finds the likenesses he's captured are quite accurate. He's careful to make sure he gets "Ja'Kollus Iss'Wyrm" spelled correctly. "Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it? I don't suppose you still have that trident, do you?"

Jozhur approves of Parnell's idea, and recounts the time a sea serpent swallowed Bralin, illiciting a chuckle from the dwarf. "Why did you go to such lengths to preserve it? Any chance it's still around?"

Bralin describes the wooden guardian they fought in the Crying Woods. "Seems you spend a lot of time fighting creatures much bigger than your average critter," Parnell observes. "Did this guardian have a name? If not, care to name it for me?" He also sketches out the described guardian. The thing towers over the Sea Dragons, half obscured by a mist it seems to be appearing from. There's a blank spot on the bottom, surrounded by an ornate border. No doubt it's reserved for a name.

Aexana comes up blank. Parnell smiles warmly and moves on.

Fang describes the Fearsome Fungus of Florence. "That DOES sound dreadful indeed. Did this fungus have any relation to the Purple Plague of Prague you mentioned? Seems like you've fought your fair share of alliterative evil. What kind of head did this scarecrow have? Pumpkin? Burlap sack?" He sketches the beast out according to Fang's description.

Tahni adds the Colossus of Fae Skiemir to the list. "Anti-magic field? That doesn't sound very fair," Parnell observes as he begins drawing. The result is a gigantic metal humanoid, surrounded by broken weaponry. The Sea Dragons are featured prominently. A beam of energy is erupting from Tahni's hand, only to bounce harmlessly off the Colossus.

Parnell takes a moment to go over all the artwork he created of the monsters you've fought. "I'm keen on accuracy, so please correct any mistakes I've made." There are a few, but he deftly corrects each image until they accurately show your triumphs.

When he's satisfied, he sets the artwork aside and moves the individual biographies he's started back in front of him. "It's important for people to empathize with their heroes, and to do that they need to know you strugle too. With that in mind, I wonder if you wouldn't tell me if there was a time you were unhappy with the outcome of your adventures? Is there something you regret? Something you wish you could do over? Maybe some time you...dare I say...failed?" He looks to Aexana. "You've been rather quiet so far, madam. Might we start with you?"

"I would speak of the time that I learned to value life, even that of an enemy trying to kill me and my friends. It caused great strife among us for a time.

We must consider our actions carefully. It is so easy to kill, and we must make sure we only do it when needed, to save our lives, or the lives of others. Rill almost has it easy, being tasked as he is to destroy undead and constructs. At least you know you're always doing the right thing disposing of those things."

Fang goes into more detail about the scarecrow. At the alteration comment she pauses. "Oh yeah, I guess so. I'm bad with names so I might just remember those two because of how catchy they are. There was a whole thing were I and some fellow priests spent most of a year chasing a priest of Marteous around as he tried to spread all kinds of plagues. Both of those were related to that."

At the question about regrets she grows solemn. "My greatest regret will always be the slaughter of my original tribe. I was a great warrior in it and I sought personal glory in battle against an rival orcish clan. My ambition and bloodlust left an opening that they exploited and everyone I had ever known died. Though without that I may have never found Alemi and become a Dragon I will always carry that pain with me."

"Regrets... I tend to try and live my life without any regrets... sure I regret plummeting to death thinking I could not be hurt while flying. But Gargul himself instructed me to learn from that experience.
I left my friends before the actual fight with Billoopl as I was called for by the Druid Circle.

But perhaps my biggest regret is that we have left behind so many good friends... they could have been here with us... yet of course they have been replaced by so many new friends.

In other words... I never regret things that I've done...

Bralin's face clouds at Parnell's latest request.

The dwarf clearly has a ready answer, and just as clearly doesn't want to give it.

He simply stares at the biographer for a solid two minutes.
Finally, he sighs heavily.

Bralin reaches into his pack, and pulls out a three inch high statuette of white marble.
It is a masterwork quality likeness of a teen aged, good looking human boy, with wavy hair and a strong chin. He hands it to Parnell for the man's inspection.

"I have spoken of my journey to Koshe Marr, and our recovery of all but one of the school children. His name was Devrin. He was in my care as we made our escape. We found a guide to lead us...but were deceived. The guide was a vampire. And he...turned...the youth."

Bralin takes the statuette back, looks at it for another moment, and places in his pack.

"And so I destroyed him. Devrin."

Jozhur nods at Aexana, "My biggest regrets are also the friends who left us over time. Especially Reggie, I had grown rather find of that gal. But, she had found her child, and adventuring on the seas is no good for a mother."

"We kept the serpent to prove we had slain it, and to celebrate and feast on it with everyone in Bonetown."

"You ask about regrets and failures. We have had some minor ones. I scared the heck out of some inhabitants in one of the worlds we recently visited by demonstrating magic when I knew it was unknown to them. I regret that a bit. And while we have had occasional failures, there were none yet that we were not able to rectify.

"You are an interesting creature Parnell. You are here under the auspices of creating trading cards, and yet you ask us about organizations and relationships, creatures we have fought, what we are proud of, and of our regrets and failures. Clearly more information that will possibly fit on a trading card.

"So, tell me Parnell Ragsby, is there more to you than meets the eye? You ask the Sea Dragons to bare our souls. Will you allow me to peer into yours as well?"

Rill is asking permission before using his Probe Psyche ability on Parnell. If Parnell says no, he will not do this, but will begin casting a number of divination spells to find out what's really going on here with this most unusual visitor.

---------------------------------------------------
Probe Psyche - After one minute of observation and/or conversation, a seeker can use this ability to gain insight on the creature. The target may make a Will Save against this ability, at a DC of 25 to resist the effect. If the target passes their save then their alignment is revealed. If the target fails their save the seeker knows their alignment and personality, and gains a +2 Insight bonus to attacks, armor class, and spell DC against the creature. Creatures almost universally view the use of probe psyche as unnerving at best, rude and insulting at worst. NPCs subjected to the power shift their attitude toward the soulseeker by 1d3 steps toward hostile.

And so our heroes continue their interview with Parnell. Terser speaks of internal strife within the Sea Dragons, stopping Parnell's writing. "Really?" he starts. "Care to elaborate on that?"

Fang mentions the slaughter of his tribe, and his own part in it. Aexana lives a life without regret for her actions, though she does miss old friends. Parnell nods along. "One of the Iron Dragons said something similar when I interviewed them," he starts. "Restlin, a wizard and priest of Wardd. He said he took the loss of an adventuring companion, be it to death or just them moving on, was the hardest part of the life for him."

Bralin doesn't have to think hard about his answer, though it is difficult to get out. Parnell looks up from his writing. "I'd understand if you'd like me to not record that. Not that I'm judging your actions, but that's a stain some who don't understand what difficult choices your and your kind must make would take issue with. I'll leave that up to you."

Parnell's voice has turned dispassionate during this portion of the interview.

Jozhur shares Aexana's regret, especially regarding one named Reggie. He also explains the sea serpent was eaten. "Ah, pity. I'd hoped you'd had it preserved. Would have made an excellent backdrop."

Rill has regrets, but they're pretty minor. He's more interested in the person conducting the interview. If he takes issue with Rill's questioning, he hides it perfectly.

"Trading cards and collectibles are my primary product, but not my only one. I also produce biographies, as well as true adventure tales of the Dragon Consortium. All such publications are done with the explicit permission of all persons involved, and fair royalties are paid or donated to a cause of their choosing." He places pen and paper down and sits back in his chair.

"I understand if you wish to confirm this. You may cast your spell. I've also had the pleasure of interviewing all living Dragon Consortium groups; any of them could provide a reference." There is no animosity in his voice as he speaks.

Rill's spell reveals Parnell is LG. He is a precise, neat man with a head for business and the heart of an artist. He appears to be just who he says he is. A grimace crosses his face as the spell does its work. Afterwards, he is just very slightly cooler to Rill.

"If we're satisfied," he continues once he recovers, "let's wrap up the more macabre questioning. Last serious one before we start painting in earnest.

"Death. It follows your kind throughout your careers. I wouldn't be surprised if a few of you had come back in addition to Aexana here. Adventurers of your caliber do not stay dead for long, though. What are your feelings on this? Gargul would deny most requests for another chance on life. Is it fair that adventurers are so often allowed to return to life?

"It's a pointed question, I realize. Maybe you feel trapped? Do you feel you're expected to return to life and endure more hardships so that the rest of us may live in relative peace?"

Fang only needs half a moment's consideration to come up with her own answer. "As a healer death and suffering are my enemies. It comes for us all, but I try to stave it off for as many as I can. As a warrior, I also hand out death to those who oppose me. I balance these two halves of myself by always asking this question: Will those I save reduce the suffering of others? Would those I kill increase the suffering of others?

It's never an easy question, and I imagine the gods face similar ones. If Gargul decides that one life returned will prevent the suffering and death of many more then I must have faith in his choice and do my best to ensure it has the desired result. For those he refuses to allow a return of I too must accept that choice and have faith that their time has come. I make similar choices every time I call on my god for healing or swing my axe against evil."

"Yet, it seems the question is directed in error. We ask for our comrades to be returned. I'm sure this happens throughout the Wold. Who Gargul chooses to favor, and why, and why he demands much in return from some while little from others is a question for him."

As a recipient of Gargul's favour, I would not think to judge his motives. Access to magic and wealth seem to be requirements for coming back, and adventurers tend to have more access than the common man. That just makes it our duty to make sure that those who don't have those resources are protected. "

"Is it fair that adventurers return to the same body? I think you are asking the wrong question, friend. The more interesting question is why was it necessary?

"As for death, it is written 'Do not fear death. Fear instead a wasted life.' Live your life, Parnell, such that you will never stand before the Lord of Life and Death wondering if you could have done more with what was given you."

Parnell's question was bound to tweak some noses. Fang, Aexana, and Tahni give well thought out, simple answers.

He nods at Bralin's request for his story not to be recorded. "I always honor such wishes, Master Bralin. I have made no record of the tragedy, though I do thank you for sharing it with me. Having a better understanding of my subjects always translates to a better finished product, in my mind." Bralin states the question should be directed to Gargul. "Ah, were I trying to understand the reasons why some are returned and others not, I surely would seek counsel of his priesthood. My question is regarding your feelings on the matter, though." He does not press the issue further.

Terser decides the particulars of their internal strife should remain in the past. Parnell graciously accepts the response and let's the subject go. He gives his own thoughts on Gargul's favor. "Interesting," Parnell responds. "Though I'd not expect most to think Gargul's mercy can be bought. Not that you were insinuating that, of course. It's usually an unspoken understanding that people who come back are people with means, yet you've chosen to speak it."

Rill turns the question back on Parnell. "Begging your pardon, Master Rill, but my question was not influenced by my personal beliefs on this matter. I've been doing this a long time; I've found how people answer the question says a lot about them. Personally, I'm much more fearful of a world where heroes such as yourself cannot return to make our world safer for all its people."

Parnell takes a moment to gather the papers he's filled with drawings and notes, separating them into one pile for each of you. "There," he says with a smile. "Hard part's over. The last thing I'll need before we progress to capturing your likenesses is a quote from each of you. It's something new I'm trying: a personal quote from each of our Dragon Consortium hero cards accompanying their portrait. Doesn't need to be anything too fanciful, just something memorable you've said in the past that reveals what makes you tick. Or, perhaps just a particularly humorous quip, or an intimidating cry shouted to your enemies. Your call."

Parnell looks confused for a moment, then smiles. "In all my years of writing and painting, no one's ever asked that of me." He reaches down into his bag and pulls out a small, hardbound book. "This one is being published next month. It's a story about the Iron Dragons in their earlier careers. They fought off an illithid demigod that was feasting on children. I'm quite proud of it. It was quite a battle, too! Poor Zane...well, you'll see. Wouldn't want to spoil the ending."

Parnell jots quick notes on the back of a discarded drawing as the group talks. He doesn't interrupt and offers only "uh huh" and "mm hmm"s to indicate he's listening.

When the ideas stop coming, Parnell speaks up again. "Excellent. Allow me to lay out my ideas for each of you. Please, please do speak up if any of you are unhappy with what I've come up with." He presents a rough sketch for each of you.

Terser stands ready to strike down a swooping wyvern. Parnell has drawn the beast especially large for dramatic effect. Terser's spear is braced against the attack, and various trophies can be seen attached to it. His face is a mask of calmness, though his body is obviously tensed and ready to attack.

Rill's face is partially obscured by a cloak as he walks through an ancient looking room. A crypt, probably. One hand rests on a holy symbol of Gargul that matches his own, the other is outstretched partially, fingers splayed. A burst of energy radiates from him, tearing apart several undead that one assumes were charging him from behind a moment before. His eyes are obscured, but his posture is relaxed. He does not look at the explosion.

Aexana sits in a garden, sipping a cup of tea. Behind her, several assassins have been snared by roots and vines erupting from the ground. They are held aloft, weapons falling from their hands. Several tiny humanoids fly about the assassins, laughing and teasing them. Aexana is obviously enjoying her tea.

Tahni leans against the railings of a ship, assumed to be the Lionfish. A few wispy clouds can be seen in the distance, but it's obviously a sunny, beautiful day. The ship has just hit a swell, causing a spray of sea foam to erupt behind her. She is relaxed and smiling brightly.

Fang, who is obviously a woman, kneels over a wounded soldier. Divine energy flows through her, stitching the solder's wounds. Behind her a huge scarecrow has been chopped to pieces. Fang's greataxe rests nearby, covered with ichor. The look on her face is reassuring as she heals the wounded man.

Jozhur stands in the sands of the Dirt City arena. The rest of the Sea Dragons are fighting various beasts, but are not detailed. The perspective is from partially behind Jozhur, showing only a sliver of his face. A slight smile is on his lips. He is in the middle of stowing his bow and stepping into a shadow; he has partially disappeared from view. Several arrows stick out of the vemerak charging him.

Parnell pauses a moment before he reveals Bralin's. "I admit I had a difficult time with yours, Master Bralin. I do hope you'll like what I've come up with."

Bralin is stepping out from the torn throat of a giant sea serpent. His axe is surrounded by tiny snow flurries and blood has frozen while dripping down it. The look on Bralin's face is resolute, as if this is just another day in the life for him.

Character portraits done, he also lays down two additional sketches showing Billoopl and Ja'Kollu Iss'Wyrm. The Sea Dragons can be seen fighting in both sketches, but they are very small compared to the monsters they fight. The focus is not on them.

He also has one more to show. "I had an idea to make a two-sided card for this last one." He lays down two more pieces of paper. On one, all of you are out to sea on the Lionfish. Bonetown is distantly visible behind you. Jozhur mans the wheel, and all of you are looking forward with some mix of excitement, determination, and happiness. On the other, the Lionfish returns to port with several additional humanoids, including a few sketchy characters in manacles. A large crowd has gathered to see the return.

"There's also your group portrait, which I made earlier." He sits back. "So, thoughts? I assure you I can handle critques. Getting this right is more important to me than my own ego."

Parnell releases a breath he didn't realize he was holding as the Sea Dragons approve of his work. He is very pleased, blushing just a touch.

Rill asks Parnell do his best to capture his personal holy symbol. "Of course, Master Rill. If you'd be so kind as to hold it a moment..." He grabs a blank sheet of paper and a few sticks of graphite and charcoal. In no time, he's produced a perfect drawing of it. "There. I've found many adventurers are not suited to posing for portraits. Modeling is much harder work than some people realize. I like to work from illustrations as much as possible. Rest assured this will be prominently displayed in the finished work."

Fang corrects some details on the scarecrow, which Parnell fixes in real time.

Bralin approves. Parnell releases another breath he didn't realize was still in there.

Aexana no doubt notices the sketch is done in grayscale, but asks that the finished product be vibrant. If she is not wearing her green robes, Parnell asks her to briefly model them for her.

Tahni blushes, but approves.

Terser asks the glaive match his own. "Certainly. Might I be able to sketch it similar to Master Rill's?" He asks a few probing questions to get an idea of the state of the festival when he faced the wyvern. Terser also asks about copies. "Oh yes! I make two copies of each card here. One is a proof I'll use to create more, the other is yours to keep."

Jozhur gives a slap on the shoulder that shakes the slight artist, but Parnell smiles back.

"Thank you. Thank you all. Now, if you'll give me some time and space, I'll get to work on the final copies." From his bag, he produces an ornate wooden box. Both sides open, revealing several rows of small paint bottles, along with an assortment of tiny brushes and knives. From a leather tube attached to the side of the bag, he pulls a wooden contraption out. It's held together by screws and strips of metal. He expertly adjusts and assembles it into a small table-top easel. He opens the metal box containing his card stock, checking each to make sure the corners are still sharp after collecting them earlier. The easel can be adjusted to securely hold the small cards.

Then, he gets to work. Parnell spends hours hunched over the small cards with his tiny tools. His movements are precise, his technique is flawless. It takes time, but when he's finished he has two rows of fourteen cards each. There are seven cards showing our heroes, two group portraits (one double sided, one sharing drinks in a tavern), and monster cards for Billoopl, Ja'Kollu Iss'Wyrm, a bandersnatch, a froghemoth, and the scarecrow Fang described.

Aexana's card stands out due to the bright colors used, but all are of excellent quality. Parnell has taken your requests seriously.

Rill's quote about not messing with dwarves has been placed under Bralin's card, though Rill is credited with saying it. Tahni's quote about being intact is under hers.

"One last thing, then we can wrap this up. You'll notice your cards lack a border." It's true. There's a narrow white border around each of your personal cards. The two sided group portrait has a diamond-colored border. Billoopl's card has a golden one. Ja'Kollu has a silver one. The rest are bronze.

"I produce fewer of each card as the quality of the border increases. This two-sided one will be especially rare. It increases its value significantly. While I reserve the right to assign border colors to your cards, I do like to ask for the group's input before deciding. Three of these cards will be bronze, two silver, one gold, and one diamond." He looks expectantly at the lot of you.

"I'll have a promo set shipped out to you all. Most heroes keep them as mementos, but to be honest, many trade them for favors. My cards and figures hold a lot of value to collectors, and the ones I'll give you from the first print run will be one of a kind and priceless, to someone who values these sorts of trinkets."

With a big intake a breath, followed by a loud and sudden exhale, he smiles awkwardly. "Unless I can help you all with anything.. I think its about time I take my leave! Thanks so much again!"

Fang seems pleased. "I'll be sure to treasure it. I'm going to have to go look at my own collection now, it's been a while."

"It really would be no bother for me to cook something up?"

In fact, she doesn't even wait for a response. Bacon was mentioned and she can already see others start to salivate.

"How many pieces would you like?"

Tahni sets off to the kitchen to get the fire started again. After her last dismal cooking effort, what are the chances she would do the same? How could she possibly ruin bacon?

Untrained Profession cook check: 2! Ha! I foresee many prestidigitation spells in Tahni's cooking future

Parnell grimaces as he sniffs the air.

"Ah.. that smell.. its bacon is it? Well.. I.."

He looks at the door, then at his watch, and finally at Tahnis eager face.

"Fine then. Who doesn't love a slab of bacon? Two pieces please. And a spot of that cheese? And maybe something to wash it down with, if its not too much trouble."

Fang disappears to go look at her old collection and reminiscent. Her smell's good enough to know she probably doesn't want that bacon.
