DM Mark - Voices in the Dark d100=33 ; d100=34 ; d100=76 ; Monday November 11th, 2019 10:22:32 PM Elyas prepares to cast Magic Missle on the first goblin he can see. Angus can understand the goblins and tries to intimidate one of them. Mak squints into the darkness and fires at some movement in the grass. Kiwina moves up and with his low-light vision, the dim light of Elyas’ spell is enough for him. He kills one of the goblins. Rolth chases one of the fleeing goblins down, and once he’s close his low light vision allows him to strike. Buttsmack is smacked to death. Falco fires his illuminated arrow, creating another lighted area. While it does sink into the 3’ tall grass and brush, it still provides some illumination (as indicated on the map), with dim light for another 20’ beyond. With the area now illuminated, Elyas is able to use his spell and kills one of them. Tzak shoots one of them and the creature drops.
The goblin closest to Angus is intimidated by his stare and turns to run. Until the area is lit up and Tzak shoots him. This seems to trigger something in the rest (that are still alive,) and they all run away from the Petals. While some of them disappear into the darkness as they flee, there are two unfortunate ones that are lit up and quite obvious as they run.
Here is your map. This is a Google Sheets spreadsheet. Please move yourself or let me know where you go (“I move to Z12”). Use the RD3 tab.
The area here is mostly tall grasses/brush, with the grass about 3 feet high. The dotted outline represents Elyas’ Light spell.

Rolth decides that taking a prisoner might be a good idea, so he draws his net as he moves south toward a fleeing goblin. He makes a pretty good toss! Mak once more squinted into the darkness and spotted something to his left and fired his bow. This once he took his time in firing, but the spell of quickness allowed him to fire two arrows still. Because it seems to me that banditry carries a death sentence in most places, unless of course you think the Duke has space in his dungeons for a band of goblin thieves, or that we can successfully escort an unknown number of bandits back to the city or even back to Greenfell without incident. Finally, Mak gagged the goblin with two strands of rope in case the nasty creature's sharp little teeth might try to chew through the ropes. (Rest assured your DM is not poking at you about what happened with Rasheel. What’s done is done, and is as valid a resolution as any. Gadin is just not happy with the way things worked out.)
There is some discussion and disagreement, both about what happened with Rasheel and about what to do with the trussed up goblin. Mak, Kiwina and Rolth object to killing Grubby in his defenseless state. Elyas sides Gadin’s that it seems silly to have ended Rasheel, but then balk at killing this goblin. Falco has no intention of chasing the goblins into the night, proposing rest and hunt them in the morning.
Gadin replies to Mak, ”Look, I’m … I’m not saying that Rasheel didn’t have it coming. He killed my friend Yeshia. But...well…I just ….” He trails off and falls silent and looks away, not wishing to challenge the Petals.

Kiwina agrees that the party cannot afford to take the goblin on a raid, but does not think the goblin will remain restrained for long. Even so, he does not expect the gonlins will be hard to track. When it's his turn on watch, he also makes sure Grubby is behaved.
In the morning, once the group has made their preparations -- including whatever is decided to restrain Grubby -- Kiwina attempts to pick up the goblins' trail, starting with the area the two goblins bolted from. (Survival = 34 to track the goblins in the morning)
Just after sunrise Tsak goes hunting for food and water. He comes back with enough berries and nuts to feed two others as well as himself. He is careful not to go near the area where the goblins disappeared to, so that he doesn't interfere with their tracks.

In the morning, Tzak forages for some food and brings it back. The bound and gagged goblin looks at the food, and with Angus’ help Tzak explains to Grubby what will happen to him if he follows. Kiwina finds the start of the trail of the goblins’ that ran off. Or two of them at least. Mak stands ready to go along with the plan. Falco casts Zone of Truth with the goblin in it.
The bound and gagged goblin looks at the group as Falco casts his spell. (Are there questions?) Who else is in the Zone of Truth?

Rolth is willing to wait on the Zone of Truth to reveal the goblin's intentions. If the little beggar says he is planning to betray us, Rolth will immediately coup de grace the goblin for his unrepentant evil. If the spell reveals that he will guide us safely to attack the goblin camp, Rolth is willing to go along with that plan too. He's just ready to get to the action. This is too much talking even for him!

Kiwina didn't plan on asking questions, and doesn't know what the party would ask other than whether the goblin would double-cross them if they took him to raid his comrades. DM Mark - "What are we going to do with this goblin?" d20-1=13 ; Tuesday November 19th, 2019 5:13:09 PM
As Falco prepares to question little Grubby in a Zone of Truth, the rest of the party watch, keeping a sharp eye out for any surprise attack. Angus translates.
As he answers, Grubby seems to struggle with his responses a bit, accustomed to the compelling force of a Zone of Truth.
Q: Did you target our group or just get unlucky thinking we would be easy pickings? A: Um, I’m gonna go with unlucky. We was targeting you, but just cuz you were on the road an’ we spotted you an’ all.
Q: What is your favorite color? A: Bl….Bluhhh….Ugh. Yellow. OK? It’s yellow! There, now you know. Sheesh. Don’t tell the other goblins tho.
Q: Does your group/tribe attack others often, is there leadership that tells who to attack? A: Mmmm. Not offen, ‘cause usually it’s a big group of minotaurs, right, and they’d squish us. But, mebbe jus’ one minotaur, tho. It was Buttsmack’s idea. Anyway. I’m done with that. An’ he’s dead.
Q: Are there more than goblins, other creatures, where you group stays? A: Well, it’s mostly goblins. But there’s the skeletons. And the ghost.
Q: If we let you go will you betray us or become a murdering thief again? Can you become a member of society with a skill?" A: Hey! I ain’t no murderin’ thief! Butsmack sed we’s anti-pruners! We make our own way in life!
Q: What was your fathers name?" A: Beat’s me. No, that’s not his name. An’ he prolly woulda’ beaten me if I known him tho, but I dunno who he wuz.
Q: Are there traps and lookout locations on the way to your camp? Where are they? A: Well sure, we keep watch. We don’ want nobody sneakin up on us.
Q: If you could have any one item what would it be?" A: Mmmm. Prolly a biiiig bag o’ gold. Cuz I kin go do wat I want with a big bag o’ gold. I kin get some goblin women, I kin mebbe even start my own tribe! We’d be the … uh, Grubby’s Gang of Going Goblins! I could mebbe even open a goblin tavern, brew my own beer. We’d be cool. An’ rich! An’ I’d paint the place yellow. Ooch, why did I say that? Don’t tell nobody about that part.
Q: What are the skeletons and the ghost you mentioned? How many? A: Oh, there’s, um, lots. (Grubby can’t count, but you’ll learn it’s about as many as he has fingers? Or less? Maybe?) The ghost is what we call him. I dunno what he is, but he scares me. He jus tells us what to do, and we bring him stuff, an’ he keeps some stuff. He keeps talking about takin’ over the world, an’ some sortta thing from the sea, an’ all. I think mebbe he’s crazy. He don’t come out much. I tol’ Buttsmack we outta leave, but he didn’t wanna cause Buttsmack wuz gettin’s coins an’ all. An’ now Buttsmack’s dead, so I aint’ goin’ back there no more. Mebbe my friends didn’t go back there too.

DM Mark - "What are we going to do with this goblin?" d20=8 ; Wednesday November 20th, 2019 10:18:47 PM Rolth and Tzak wonder if what the goblin is talking about is somehow related to an earlier encounter. Elyas and Mak believe this is a problem that needs to be addressed. Kiwina wonders about this ghost. Angus and Falco ask some follow-up questions.
Q: Why you say he is a ghost? What does he look like? Does he walk through things? Does he command the skeletons? A: Um, cause that’s what we call him. I aint seen him much, but he’s white all over, an’ he’s creepy. I didn’t see him walk thru nuthin’, but mebbe he can. Them skeletons must be workin’ with him, cause goblins don’t keep skeletons around.
Q: Be specific on what the Ghost looks like or what others say he looks like if you have not seen. A: Like I said, I only seen him once. He’s...he’s jus’ creepy. He’s white all over, an his skin is kinda flaky or rotten. They say he hunts for babies at night and eats ‘em. And that he’ll eat us if we cause a problem.
Grubby adds, ”I’d sure like these ropes off a’ me. I gots an itch I can’t scratch, and it’s kinda driving me nuts. You guys got anything to eat or drink? When do I get that big bag of gold?”

He's not sure what to do with thd goblin while the party investigates this supposed ghost, but believes if doesn't want to be near the ghost, although it might change its mind soon enough after being on its oen a while.

Elyas has no questions for the goblin. he is pretty sure we have gotten everything we can from this goblin who mostly just spouts nonsense or doesn't know what is really going on. the ghost seems worth checking out, and the goblin seems unlikely to have more to say about it. Elyas packs his bedroll and gets ready to move out as soon as the group is ready
DM Mark - "What are we going to do with this goblin?" Thursday November 21st, 2019 11:58:42 PM Tzak, Mak and Elyas have heard enough and keep a sharp eye out while everyond prepares to leave. Kiwina is ready to follow the goblin trail. Rolth unties the goblin and says, ”you get a sack of gold when you help us sneak up on the ghost and destroy him. Now let’s go!" Then he hefts his morningstar, ready to smack the goblin if he runs. Falco nots agreement with Rolth’s comment. Angus asks Grubby, ”Does the Ghost speak to anyone? Have you heard him? Does he speak Goblin or Human-talk?”
Grubby rubs his arms as the ropes are removed.
He eyes the Liontaur towering over him with his weapon drawn as his bonds are released. If he was thinking of running, he’s certainly not now. He responds to Angus, ”He mostly talked to Buttsmack. Never really heard him tho. I figure he can prolly speak goblin or sumpthin’, cause he talked to Buttsmack and all.”
“So, about me going with you. I … I’d rather not, on acounta they’ll kill me fer this or ghost will come eat me or both. But, you knoooow, how much gold are we talking? An can you gimme it now incase they kill you an’ all?”
Kiwina does believe he can track the goblins that ran off, at least initially, to wherever they ran to. (Without Grubby, you’ll need to make a DC 13 Survival Roll to follow the path.)
(We don’t have to play out a whole conversation with Grubby. I just want to know if you cut him loose and send him packing, tie him up and leave him here, pay him to go with you, force him to go with you, or something else.)
When the goblin is released Tsak carefully has a look around the area that Kiwina found tracks last evening. He finds more tracks heading away from camp. The goblins left in a hurry and weren't particularly careful to cover their retreat.

Tzak is able to pick up the trail of the previously fleeing goblins. Mak tries to lag back, does not get too far back as the brush and trees make it difficult to see the half-orc and his cat. Falco offers to cast Shield on Rolth if needed. Kiwina lags behind so as not to give the group away as they approach. Elyas keeps an eye on Grubby as he goes, and then travels with the others. Angus tells Grubby to mind himself, and then heads off with the others.
Alas, Grubby’s dreams of a bright yellow goblin tavern and plenty of goblin serving wenches is dashed as the Petals send him packing. He hangs his head as he wanders off in the direction they send him.
The Petals find that they are able to follow the trail. They eventually come down as small rise to an area covered mostly in rocky ground and low brush. They approach cautiously, staying low. The trail leads toward a cave opening in a large cliff face.
I placed the party on a map, over 100 feet from this cave opening. All is silent.

Tsak spots the cave entrance which he guesses is the spot the goblins, skels and ghost will be hiding. He spends time surveying the nearby hills to make sure there's no dried lava lying around. According to legend a hidden base under a volcano spells real trouble. Satisfied its just a run-of-the mill lair he indicates it to the others.
How do we want to do this? Smoke em out, or just run in screaming blue murder at the top of our lungs?
Rolth looks at the rocky areas to see whether they are passable at all. If so, "It might be best to move up to the left, using the rocks and brush to screen our approach. That way if anyone is watching out of the cave mouth, they will have a hard time spotting us. Better to move a little more slowly than get caught out in the open!"
"Alternately, someone could use one or more of our potions of invisibility to sneak up there and look for guards. Maybe even take them out if they aren't too numerous. What do you guys think?"
Figuring that there might be a magic using necromancer in there, Rolth will also activate his "Tin Foil Hat" that he got from the Giggling Ghost. (+1 saves vs enchantment, lasts for 24 hours)

We could try to take him out quietly, either with someone going up invisible or at range with spells and arrows. either way, i doubt we'll get far before we alert them, they are hard to spot and good at seeing and moving in the dark. maybe it would be best to start something loud out here, outside of their warrens. draw out as many as possible and let the more cowardly ones run away rather than back them into a corner where they are forced to fight to death

Rolth finally spots the goblin guard, and tries to quietly move up near Falco. "Falco, thanks for the spell. Mak, I doubt you can throw the sack of gold farther than the goblin can see, so good idea, but hard to execute without him raising the alarm before ever seeing the gold. Any reason why one of you sneaky types doesn't want to go invisible and kill the goblin? We're probably not going to be able to cover that distance without being detected otherwise. I like the idea of luring them out, but am worried that they have another entrance and we'll get surrounded out here. And then the boss will be forewarned for sure. Seems like it might be a good idea to take a look inside the entrance and see if we would have space to maneuver in there. Better than being outside where they can rain dozens of arrows on us at once. If no one else wants to go look, I'll do it."
Rolth casts expeditious retreat on himself while the party deliberates. Whatever happens, being able to move fast is likely to be useful!

The DM does not want to frustrate the players, so if you’re just waiting for sneaky players to move up, sneaky players should move to within 30 feet or so of the goblin, and we’ll take it from there. Please let me know how many rounds that will take, and bear in mind that moving through difficult terrain makes you move at half speed. Also, please make stealth rolls for each round of movement.
The rest of you can move up as you see fit, and if you do move up make stealth rolls also, though the farther you are the less likely he is to see or hear you.
And if you decide to do anything else, let me know that too. I don’t want to drag out the approach here, but I am interested in how you handle this - however you choose to handle this.

The three goblins at the wall drop their bows and attack the liontaur with short swords. At the same time, three more dash out from the side passage ahead and shoot at Rolth with short bows. Rolth is stabbed for 3 points of damage, and then shot twice for 1 and 2 damage (total of 6 points.)
Then the ground itself beside Rolth erupts as four skeletons caked in dried mud rise up to attack. (As they stand up from a prone position, this will provoke an attack of opportunity from Rolth.) Rolth is hit twice by their rusty scimitars for 3 and 6 more damage.

Tzak moves (AA20), provoking an AOO which misses. He strikes a skeleton. As with Angus, he hits, but fails to inflict any damage. His initial inclination is that it is magical fog, and if that is the case perhaps he can dispel it. but he wants to get a good feeling of whether that is true or not before spending the resources to try to shut it down. knowledge nature = 19
he starts by casting detect magic while looking at the fog. if magical he will try to determine what kind of magic it is spellcraft = 18.
Rolth Niheow (BatMark) (39/41 HP | AC: 15; Touch: 12; CMD: 21) | Move = 80 d100=1 ; Monday December 9th, 2019 9:00:55 PM
Rolth nods agreement when Falco suggests that we get a move on before more opponents are rallied to fight us. He's uncertain of this fog, though, so he won't yet enter it while Elyas does his expert wizarding. He will step closer, switch weapons, and take an experimental swipe at reach with his glaive into AG8, hoping to strike a goblin in the fog.

Tsak notices a gap that he certainly couldn't fit thru, but the goblins might.
He moves back to AA14 and calls Esmerelda.
Esmerelda moves forward, getting to Z14 where Tsak tells her to stay put, as some sort of lookout for the party. He hopes she has the sense to raise the alarm and come find him, rather than fight by herself. Tsak feels bad leaving her by herself in the dark cave, although judging by the way she moves she may be able to see nearly as well as he can He calls the to others: Guys, there's a gap in the rock here that the goblins may be able to fit thru. I'll leave Esmerelda as a lookout, but please be wary of attack from behind.

Falco moves again to be just behind Rolth. {AG12} It is good to be little at times like this. He does his best to see what he can of the fog. {Perception: 27}

OOC: Mak stepped up to AE11; Perception +4, Roll 14
The smell of death brought back memories to the crippled soldier. Memories of a time when death was all around him and he was laying within its midst. Mak didn't despair however, he just became more committed to not being a part of that pile up again. With his bow still readied for a shot Mak waited for Elyas to work the magic that man was best suited for as he slowly crept forward to look into the fog.
