DM Mark - Ghosts and Goblins
Tuesday December 10th, 2019 8:01:03 PM

Elyas casts Detect Magic, and this first round, Elyas can sense the presence of magic within 60’ of him (Detect Magic takes 3 rounds to sense specific auras and determine magical properties.)
Rolth swings his glave, but hits nothing by air.
Tzak alerts the others to a gap above the rockfall in the side passage.
Kiwina asks if goblins are good at pits or traps.
Angus says that they are.
Falco move up, but cannot see beyond 5 feet into the fog.
Mak moves forward a bit.

You also hear a few rocks move in the distance.

Perception DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: {You hear some hear some soft footfalls.}
Perception DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {You hear some hear some quiet whispering but cannot make out the words.}

But all you see is fog. All is quiet, as the smell of death lingers in the air.

Here is your map. This is a Google Sheets spreadsheet. Use the RD 16-19 tab.

(Please move yourself or let me know where you go (“I move to Z12”). The stone in here represents cave walls, and the tan area is difficult terrain, which limits movement. The pink area is fog.)

"Here they come lads, shall we form a line to receive them? No point in letting them concentrate their attacks on just one or two of us."

Rolth will switch back to his morningstar, and ready an action to use inspire courage when the first foe comes into sight, singing of our mighty deeds back in the Sargrass when we repulsed the charge of the dark brigade.

(Inspire Courage +1 to hit and damage on our attacks, and +1 saves vs charm and fear)

Kiwina listens momentarily to see if he can tell which direction the sounds are coming from or estimate how far away they are, but gives up quickly. He then casts detect snares and pits.

Angus says he hears something coming.
Rolth switches weapons, readies an action to inspire courage in his friends bolstering their attacks.
Kiwina worries about what lies ahead and casts Detect Snares and Pits, but does not detect any such large hazards.
Falco cast light on a spell, ready to fire on a goblin.
Mak shoots into the fog. He hits - something.
Tzak moves up a bit.
Elyas can sense that there are a number of magical auras, but he’s not sure where they are yet. They could be the party.

You hear some clattering footsteps as the image of a large, beaked skeleton come into view, partially obscured in the fog. Having only moved forward 5 feet, one of them attacks Rolth and hits him twice for 6 and 10 damage.

Rolth’s readied action goes off and everyone is affected by Inspire Courage for +1 to hit and damage on our attacks, and +1 saves vs charm and fear.

(Where it stands at the edge of the fog, this creatures has concealment, so any hits against it have a 20% miss chance. You cannot see beyond 5 feet into the fog.)

Mak hugged the cavern wall as he moved forward and stepped quietly into the edge of the mist and listened for noises other than from the owlbear skeleton. Mak heard something (I presume) and fired two arrows, but only heard them clatter against the rocks of the cavern.

Elyas continues to try to determine if the fog is magical or not. he trusts his companions to keep the enemies at bay and thinks that clearing the fog will do a lot more good than throwing one more attack at this skeleton.

Rolth roars his inspiring song out in a rage as he and Falco take damage from the blows, and he makes a full attack against the beaky skeleton. The first three have some chance of succeeding, while the bite goes astray in the mist. (ignore the last %, I accidentally rolled one extra)

morning star to hit =26, damage/type = 12 B/P

The fog is lit up from within by Kiwina’s light source she slung in there, making the fog around this large skeleton pretty well lit up.

Mak move into the mist and shoots, but is unsure if his arrows found a foe.
Elyas continues concentrating on his Detect Magic spell. He can sense that the fog is a weak source of conjuration magic. He can sense several sources of magic on the party, but that’s it. He can also sense a sources of Conjuration magic near the skeleton.
Angus readies an arrow to shoot anything threatening coming out of the fog.
Tzak moves forward and attacks the skeleton. His blow lands true in spite of the mist, and the skeletal creature, doing some damage.
Rolth attacks the skeleton, and while his morning star does full damage, his paws are less effective (liontaur paws are slashing weapons.)
Kiwina stabs a spear at the thing, but his attack goes wide.
Falco shoots his glowing arrow at the beast, and while it does provide light it does little to pierce the thick fog.

Rolth manages to kill the thing, causing it to explode in a burst of razor-sharp bone fragments when it dies. Rolth, Mak, Kiwina and Tsak take 2 points of damage, DC 10 Reflex save halves this damage.

As this happens, and another large skeleton clatters forward where the other one stood, and claws ineffectively at Rolth.

(Creatures in the fog have concealment if within 5 feet, so any hits against them have a 20% miss chance. You cannot see beyond 5 feet into the fog.)

Rolth manages to dodge most of the bone bits, taking only 1hp of damage, and Falco takes none via the Shield Other spell. (Reflex = 15, success!) He continues his battle song (inspire courage) as he attacks this latest foe. He has no trouble spotting this one in the fog, at least for now.

paw to hit = 27, damage/type= 8hp S

(Save vs Reflex=19 Success, Attack=11, Dmg=11)

Tsak ducks as the skel explodes, and his reflexes save him from most of the damage. He realises that he is in Kiwina's way, but with another foe in front of him there's not much he can do about it now. He swings again hoping for the best.

Further back than the others, Kiwina avoids some of the damage (save = 23).

Kiwina tries another attack with the longspear. Once again, he misses. The weapon is meant to be used from a second rank in battle, but apparently not in a cave.

Rolth damages the next skeleton as he sings inspiration to his friends. (Damage reduction 5 against slashing weapons.)
Angus moves up, and both he and Tzak shoot at the thing. They both manage to hit it in the mist, but their arrows is not as effective as they’d hoped (damage reduction of 5 against piercing weapons.)
Mak creeps forward a bit, looking for a trap.
Kiwina attacks, but does not hit.
Falco heals Rolth.
Elyas focuses on the fog and dispels it.

Suddenly, things open up! And it still stinks in here.

Some unnaturally fast zombies charge up to Mak. These things are weird looking. They seem to have humanoid bodies, but instead of arms they have tentacles! Mak is hit once by a zombie tentacle for 8 points of damage. Emboldened by the zombies, the goblins fire arrows at Mak as well. Only one hits, as they are not firing into combat and Mak takes another 2 points of damage.

Far in the back is a large, grey, desicated thing with many tentacles. And behind it is a completely white figure, gesturing in the air. Then a glowing hand darts forth and touches Tsak, but misses him.

Once the fog falls, Elyas can see the real threat.

That must be the ghost! we need to get back there!

[casting lightning bolt, path shown on the map. assuming there are still skeletons in the large space, Elyas will cast defensively.

Angus shoots at one of the tentacled zombies, but barely misses.
Mak sinks two arrows at the zombie in front of him, and the thing shudders as it drops to the ground.
Tzak hits the big skeleton, though he does little damage against the bony thing.
Rolth keeps up his song as he hits the skeleton, causing it to explode in a shower of bone fragments!
Kiwina stowes his spear, and casts Produce Flame as a delicate flame dances on the palm of his hand.
Elyas says, ”That must be the ghost! we need to get back there!” Then he casts a Lightning Bolt at the thing.
Falco casts some sort of healing on himself. (Sorry I got a bit ahead of you in this post. Go ahead and heal Falco as you alluded to for this turn, and then post your regular turn as well.)

When the skeleton explodes Rolth, Mak, Kiwina, Tsak, Angus, and Elyas take 10 points of damage. A DC 10 Reflex save halves this damage. The zombie also takes damage, bone fragments now embedded in the left side of his head.

Elyas’ bolt of lightning crackles through the air, illuminating the far cave area in a flash of light. It lances through the remaining zombie, killing it. Strangely, the grey, pulpy octopus-thing is unaffected. The white figure beyond it is affected, and his lip curls up in a snarl as burn marks appear on his chest, and patches of clothing and diseased skin are burned away. It barks at the octopus thing to move, and steps forward casting a spell. A Lightning Bolt streaks from the thing’s finger back toward Elyas’. Elyas, Tsak, Kiwina, Rolth and Falco all take 26 damage (DC 19 reflex save for half.)

A glowing hand floats in the air nearby.

It says with a snarl, ”We do not need to fight this fight. Join me. Serve the one I serve, now as trusted allies or later as thralls. You will all serve eventually - how you do so is up to you.”

The goblins you see do not attack, though they are on guard. They seem a little intimidated, what with dueling lightning bolts lancing back and forth through the cavern.

True to his thought Rolth again took some damage. Stuck behind the large bodies and only having a bow there is little Falco can do against the skeletons his eyes widen as the bolt of lighting flies. Bone shards flew everywhere with the destruction of the skeleton as Mak ducked and rolled to avoid the bone fragments. At the same time there were two flashes of lightning and in the wake of those two attacks Mak was shocked that this ghost creature had so injured his friend Elyas. Mak gathered himself and stepped in front of Elyas and raised his bow. He fired two arrows at the ghostly figure. Mak's eyes lost track of the first arrow, but the second appeared to strike the necromancer.

Mak was hurting as he'd been hit by the goblins archers and twice now by the shards of exploding skeleton bones. Retreat though wasn't an option as he faced off against the ghost creature and hoped it didn't have another of those lightning bolts.

He looks over his shoulder at Falco, who seems to be singed but blessedly not dead. That Warper-Sar is made of tough stuff!

Mind at ease, Rolth swings his focus back to our foes, and advances to a better position, shouting at the goblins and shooing them away. "Get back, do not fight for this foul ghost and we will slay it and release you from bondage to it. Or join it in death, your choice!"

Mak steps out and sinks an arrow into the white figure. His other attack misses. Whatever it is, it bleeds when pierced by the arrow.
Rolth nimbly dodges the exploding skeleton and the lightning! The Shield spell on him helps, though it passes along 8 points of damage to Falco. He moves up and glares at the goblins, threatening them with death if they continue their fight.
Falco, having healed himself last turn, dodges the lightning and avoids the worst of it. At the same time he feels the sting of the damage Rolth avoids.
Tzak manages to avoid some of the damage from the exploding skeleton, but is not as lucky with the lightning. Still the damage is not enough to put the half-orc down (31 damage instead of 35, as he made that first save.) Thanks to his magical backpack, he finds a potion and drinks it. (Go ahead and roll the healing from the potion.)
Elyas fires a ray of fire at the undead octopus, but the bloated thing is a bit quicker than it looks and the ray goes wide.
Kiwina throws his ball of fire at the white figure. While it misses, the creature
Angus moves over to Tsak and pulls him back out of the way (if Tsak goes willingly.)

The white figure looks at the arrow sticking out of its shoulder, and he snarls, ”Very well. You’ll serve as thralls!” And with that, he focuses on the biggest threat right now and the glowing hand to touches Mak. Mak needs to make a DC 20 Fort save or be paralyzed.

The goblins look at Rolth, and then glance in the direction of the larger cavern, perhaps looking to see if the white figure is watching. They withdraw to the back of the cave, away from Rolth, but they do not attack. They nervously keep their bows at the ready as they yell a little too loudly in goblin Highlight to display spoiler: {

Angus shoots the rubbery thing for 3 damage.
Kiwina heals Falco.

Falco channels energy to heal his friends. (In the future, be sure to roll each d6 individually because you can re-roll 1’s.)
Tzak has another personality emerge, and he begins ranting about volcanoes and licorice as he rushes to defend his cat. He doesn’t see any goblins, but he does hear something scrambling up the rock pile down the hall from him.

The white figure’s eyes narrow, it’s voice filled with hatred. He has a burn mark across his chest and two arrows are sticking out of him. The red blood from the arrows is bright against his white skin and clothing. ”You fools. A time is coming, indeed it has come, when the Wold will be remade. Only the strongest will be tested and survive. Life will be as meaningless and as meaningful as death, and there will be little difference between the two. I hope to one day see you beg for release.”

Then he steps to the bloated undead octopus, intones the words of a spell, and the two creatures vanish.

The goblins have retreated as they jabber loudly. If you speak goblin Highlight to display spoiler: {

The white figure and that undead octopus have vanished from sight.

Rolth fixes the goblins with his most intimidating gaze as he roars, "Do I look like I speak goblin? Speak common! The ghost and his pet have fled, leaving you here on your own. Tell us, where did he likely go? And who did he serve? What else did he say about this time of change that is coming in the Wold?"
Angus moves around the corner to the larger room and shoots a distant goblin in the throat. It clutches briefly at the arrow as it dies.
Elyas warns the others that the two vanished figures may still be there but invisible.
Kiwina Mak and look for any telltale signs that the two may be there but invisible, but as far as they can tell they are gone.
Falco channels energy to heal everyone. (How much healing is done?)
Tzak and Esmerelda take up a guarding position

The goblins nearest Rolth stand at the wall frozen in fear, their bows held in their trembling hands. One of them wets himself. In goblin one of them says, Highlight to display spoiler: {”ooh we’re gonna die we’re gonna die we’re gonna die…”}

One of them eventually replies in common, ”I...I can sp-sp-sp-speak common. Is...is ghost really gone?” Assuming you tell him yes, he relaxes a bit as he continues,

”Where’d he go? Beats me. I’m just glad he’s gone. Ugh. That guys was gross. He paid us for any bodies and their stuff we brought back. An stinkly tentacle bag was bad too.

“Who’d he serve? I dunno, but he was always talkin’ about sumpin coming, sumpin big, an that he’d be impotant an all. An he said it would be terrifying and glorious and the seas would boil and the Wold would tremble before it. Pfffft. He said he seen visions. An tentacles. But he was doing bad stuff.”

It smells really bad in here. As you explore the cave, the goblins offer no more resistance. The scene is grizzly to say the least. You find a few human and minotaur bodies, and a couple have their arms removed and tentacles sewn on in their place, which would explain those two zombies you killed. There are rotting things, some parts of fish and octopus in various states of decay.

There are piles of clothing and debris, and a few sacks at such.

The goblin who spoke up before says, ”Um, can we go?”

Gadin’s voice from the entrance to this place echos faintly, ”Hey. Hey, are you guys OK? It … smells bad in there.”

They did commit acts of banditry, after all, and he only promised to free them from the ghost, not set them free!

He does also wonder what was scuttling through the collapsed tunnel.

Regarding the goblins he simply shrugs.

"Let them go. There are always goblins a few more or less will make little difference in the end." to the goblins "Stay out of trouble and try and make others better ok? Your being spared."

A bath, rest and a beer sound like the best things Falco can think of.

Kiwina goes and find Gadin and encourages him to join the rest in the cave.
Rolth considers letting the goblins go. (The scurrying sound he heard was the two goblins that tried to escape over the pile of rock blocking the small passageway. At least until they encountered Esmerelda and turned back. One of them was later shot by Angus.)
Falco thinks the goblins should be let go. He casts detect magic and searches the area with the help of Mak.
Tzak votes for a beer and a bath, and suggests heading to Castle Violet. Others seem to agree.
Angus suggests burning the dead bodies.

Gadin says, ”Ugh. Who knew a goblin hole would smell this bad.

The goblins respond (after some translation), ”Hey, don’t blame us. It was Ghost that kept all this dead stuff in here. That’s the stink.”

This place is really creepy, given the various states of the dead creatures here, some of which have been joined (sewn) here and there with different aquatic things. They lay on a few crudely built wooden work tables. As you search, your detect magic picks up a forgotten pouch that contains a small black statuette of a horse and a silver medallion in the shape of a beetle. Also, one of the corpses wears a pair of old boots and a belt that detect as magic.

In a work area near the wall you find three flasks of some oily substance that detects as magic.

As you search the area, you find a small cache of onyx gems of various sizes. The DM will spare you a complicated breakdown of various sizes and just note that the total value of the gems is 2,300 gp.

[Good job choosing to go after the goblins and eliminate a nefarious threat in the area. Everyone gets ONE HERO POINT for this good deed. Also, with the end of this adventure, everyone advances to 6th level. Note that in the future, we will give out XP at various points, so you’ll need to keep good track of your XP to advance.)

DM Mark - Ghosts and Goblins

The Petals, with the reluctant help of the goblins there, move the bodies and body parts out of the cave into a pile and burn them. It’s a nasty business. They allow the goblins to leave under penalty of death should they commit any crimes. The goblins readily agree to these terms and leave quickly.

The cave area is searched, and there is nothing more to be found. This Ghost person has a sleeping area there amidst the work tables.

As you move the bodies, Perception DC 15 to notice Highlight to display spoiler: { there may have been some items here that have been taken. For instance some fingers are damaged or missing, suggesting that rings may have been removed after they died. Also, there is a conspicuous lack of coinage here, though there are some empty pouches. You also find a couple empty scroll cases.}

After a rest, you set out the next day for Castle Violet. Gadin is with you, and you reach the place without incident only to find that Duke Purple is away for a few days. As you were on a task for the Duke, they will arrange for accommodations at a nearby inn at the Duke’s expense.

This gives you time to examine the magic items you’ve found, and between Elays, Falco and perhaps Rolth you are able to identify them. You have:
An Obsidian Horse
A Scarab of Protection
Boots of Striding and Springing
Belt of Physical Might (Constitution +2, Dexterity +2)
Two Unguents of Timelessness

And as previously noted, you also have 2,300 go in only gems.

With the Woldian Slowdown, your DM will check back here every few days, so no player posting is required, but is certainly welcome and a good chance for the players to discuss among themselves. Be sure to get yourselves leveled up to 6th level.

You head over to the Duke's keep, scrubbing up as best you can (for the most part). As you arrive you are greeted by guards, in their normal uniform, and are stopped by one at the gate.

"Invitation?" he asks gruffly, and you hand over the letter, which he takes, and opens. After reading it through quickly he gives a whistle.

"Oh boy. This should be fun for you. Follow me."

He leads you through the keep until you come to the grand audience chamber, it is currently empty, save for a couple of guards who are apparently here to protect the Duke.

"Wait here until the Duke comes to speak to you."

Duke Purple (Cayzle)
Tuesday January 7th, 2020 5:26:04 PM

You stand in the grand audience hall, which is also the feasting hall that some of you have seen before. The marvelous dome of glass windows is overhead, but the many tables have been all placed against the walls, benches under them, and the floor under the dome is marble with purple veins, swept clean, empty.

The ducal chair is in its usual spot at the head of the chamber, flanked by the guards who were there when you entered. They stand at attention, minotaurs clad in plate with helms closed. You wait ... a minute ... ten ... thirty.

The Purple Duke enters from a small entry behind his chair. He is as you recall him, those who have met him. He is big, resplendent in his velvet robes, clearly a man who enjoys the pleasures of life, with obvious laugh lines around his eyes.

He is not laughing.

He sits and waves you closer.

"Boys, boys," he growls. "A fine bottle of sour wine you've opened for me. Tell me, eight-petaled rose, the story of what went down in Greenfell. I know you investigated these murders, found the criminal, and killed him. The brother of the local constable, and now a martyr for the Horned Society to rally around. Sir, you are well informed and what you say is correct. We started on the back foot when our contact, Yesia, was murdered before we arrived. From that point we were unable to make a break thru with the Minotaurs who are deeply distrustful, particularly concerning their fractious relationship with the Liontaurs. Thus we tried to keep things simple and deal only with the problem of the murder, but unfortunately the person responsible would not submit to your justice and chose suicide by attacking us ferociously whilst inciting others to do the same. A societal change is required at Grenfell. It will not happen quickly and is probably better achieved with a more subtle approach.

Having used up every word he knows and then some, Tsak lapses into silence.

He recalls facing off against three minotaurs in the fight, and probably would not have survived if Rasheel had been able to urge his syncophants on after the initial skirmish. Still, their plan had been to take Rasheel alive, and the Duke was left with the consequences of their failure. Worse, they had broken a promise to Ranter, and he had treated them decently.

When the others have spoken, Kiwina adds, quietly but firmly, "We are sorry that Rasheel may be a martyr now, because it may make your position more difficult and because his death pains his brother. "I sense that you've played this straight with me," he says. "And I can't even say I wouldn't do the same were I in your spot. But the truth of it is that though the villain is finished, the business of it, the politics of it, are not done, not by a long shot."

The expression on Duke Purple's face when he says "politics" tells you what he thinks of that, and it is nothing good.

"But I'm in a pickle, right enough. The only folk you've managed to please are the liontaurs. Word is going to get out about it, too. Hmmm ..."

He pauses in thought.

"Actually, maybe I can use that. I've been meaning to send an envoy to Chessford, to a couple of the big trading clans. The Sandifurrs, maybe ... "

"Okay, boys, you can help me set the politics of this to rights, and we'll be square. Just stay here in the castle with me for a few days, keeping undercover. I'll put out the word that I am very very angry with you and that you are in the dungeons. That'll fix one part of this for me. Then I declare an amnesty, which I was planning to do anyway, for the big celebration coming up. You Petals skeedaddle off to Liontaur Island, deliver my messages, and we're square."

"Oh, and, uh, let things cool down before you come back to this neck of the woods, if you know what I'm saying."

"Do we have a plan? How's that sit with you?"

Angus remains silent. He is fine with traveling elsewhere for a while. There is much to explore for a young half-orc who has not traveled far from his home town.

Tsak's heart sinks a little as he realizes that the next venture will also involve politics. On that subject he and the Duke seem to agree.
Ah well, back on the Rose to travel to a new island and meet a new bunch of folk. Hopefully they aren't as hard-headed as the Minotaurs...

Rolth bows with a flourish, and exclaims, "Politics, that sounds ever so civilized. I for one am excited to be returning home to my people as your emissary. And well do I know the Sandifurr clan, and their reputation for fair dealing. I hope this bodes well for our mission! What say you other Petals?"

"It sounds as if we are most fortunate." Kiwina says. In an aside for the Petals closest to him he adds, "I am not a politician, but it seems odd to me that the minotaurs would accept us becoming their emissaries. Although I would understand if we were commanded to carry an emissary and his armed escort on the Rose that would also ensure we left this island."

He is a bit sad, though -- if they are to "be in the dungeons" then there is little chance of seeing Cassia.

'As much as it pains me that people will think we are locked up I understand your reasoning. We will try and be more discrete on the next mission, blade and beak as a last."

He pauses thinking.

"We should also mention the goblins and the skeletons. That was a distraction on our trip back." From there he will tell the tale or let others.
