The Agents continue to prepare. Finally, they move forward, back through the castle. They pass the stone wall that was created to block off the black armor. Heading up the stairs, they move through the spiral maze, past the tapestries and traps, and to the hidden stairway. They move into the larger room that had the horrible evil abominations and towards the final stairway. A number of spells are cast and Anna looks for a stone garden. Maybe she will see a medusa some day. Nikolai stands at the bottom of the stairs and lets the invisible Michael head up the stairs. Sigvar watches him go and concentrates, but the spiral stairway is really making it difficult to detect specific evil.
Michael disappears up the spiral stairs. He is perfectly silent and invisible. He walks around the spiral stairs and peeks up. Like with this floor, the stairs just end at the floor of the level above. He finds himself in the middle of a room about the same size as the floor below. Looking around from the stairway, it looks like he’s entered a study! The room is gently lit with smooth, even light. One wall is lined with a bookshelf, stuffed with books and faded papers. Another area has a table with a couple flames, mortars, pestles, and a few small dishes with crushed ingredients. In the far corner of the room there is a large desk. Behind that desks sits a very old man, writing with a feather quill on parchment on the desk in front of him. There are various books open on the desk and he appears to be concentrating on the writing. The rest of the room looks dusty, but well-used. There are cloaks hung on racks, and other faded, but still usable furniture in the room.

From what little Michael knows of Liches. this one must be pretty fresh or must have had a really good mortician work on him. since Michael knows he is undetected he decides it is time he worships Wardd. with a silent grin to himself, he stalks closer. he examins the old man and the items within hands reach of him. What he is looking for are items that he might be able to use for protection should he be attacked. blades, wands, magic items, he also looks for signs of life. sweat, respiration, that sort of thing. After he figures out both what's immediately handy for defence and if he is alive

Michael tries to relieve him of his items while the man is not paying attention. all the while keeping in mind the time limits of the spell and his placement in the room.

The Agents below are nervous waiting on Michael. Pru casts a spell. Trayvin wants to move. Anna changes into a bat. Nikolai takes a few steps on the stairs. Overall, though, no one heads all the way up the stairs just yet. Nikolai listens carefully, but does not hear anything.
Meanwhile, upstairs, Michael continues to creep around. The room is quite crowded and it takes a little for Michael to get closer to the man. He continues to work at his desk, occasionally stopping his writing and looking up, apparently to think. He makes his way closer and can see nothing at all defensive on the desk. It is mostly just books, a few pots of ink, and a partially eaten sandwich. There are two dented, plain metal cups there as well with an old wooden pitcher. There is a small pile of quills near the side of the desk. Without reaching out and touching the man, Michael can’t see anything out of the ordinary. The man appears to be breathing, as he occasionally sighs as he stops to think. He is not sweating, but it’s not exactly warm in the room, either. When Michael heads back down to the group, as far as he can tell, he has not been seen. He nearly runs into Nikolai on his way down.
An approximation of the room. There is additional debris and bits of things in the open spaces, so there is no clear pathway to run through the room at all. There are small piles of books, scattered papers, broken glass, etc.

Michael gets back down and explains what he has seen to the rest of his companions. The rooms rather cluttered, there is an old man there sitting behind a desk and writing in a book, He might be a lich, but I looked him over quite well and he was breathing, he didn't really seem to be a lich.. I saw no weapons or wands or anything on him and I checked him out from close range. If I had to guess he's a spellcaster, he is also into alchemy, there's a lab up there, well a mortar and pestle plus some powders and such, lots of books too. I don't know how he avoided hearing the clamor downstairs, but the fact that I was able to sneak into the room pretty much means that the place isn't warded. could be deaf?.

Anna in bat form whispers, "I was expecting trouble so I turned into a bat with the expectation I turn into something a lot beefier should this thing devolve into combat. I'm actually a little disappointed that this guy in the room probably isn't some big bad as I probably just wasted a bunch of abilities that will only last minutes for nothing but if you do want to play this more heavy handed I'm ready to stealthily fly in as a bat land then change shape to something that can actually fight and make my presence known if that is the play here."

"Well, guilt by association is a good motto but not always true. He's surrounded himself with evil stuff but they are his bodyguards. Don't mean he's actually evil himself. Only way to find out the mystery of the evil emanations around this place is to talk to him while being totally prepared for combat in case he's not what he seems to be. The true evil could still be hiding in a secret room while this old man is a decoy of some sort.
I'll lead the way with Sigvar right behind. Anna, if you want to stay in bad form and sneak in behind us and just 'hand around', that might be a good idea. And have any Detect Evil you got ready to go.
Ok, let's go."
Nikolai goes up the stairs and into the room. At D7 he stops and looks about the room. Perception +21 = 24
then moves to E5. If the old man looks up and speaks to him, he starts a conversation, otherwise he will start the conversation.
"Excuse me, Sir, who are you? Are you the owner of this castle?"

The Agents discuss what to do about the man in the room. Nikolai walks up the stairs and into the room. He stands and talks to the old man. The man briefly looks up and waves his hand at Nikolai in a complicated gesture. He says, “Get out, you’re not wanted here.”

The Agents of the Fist clamor up the stairs and into the room. It is much like Michael described, with debris and such all around. There is a large amount of dust in the room, but you can see pathways through the dust, as if someone walked through it often but hasn’t actually cleaned it in a very, very long time.
Pru steps up and apologies for disturbing the man. Anna flies around looking like an innocent bat. Sigvar squeezes his way up the stairs, his armor scraping along the sides of the walls as he squeezes through the last part of the stairway. He stands guard and looks carefully at the old man. Sigvar: Highlight to display spoiler: {When you detect evil, you are taken aback, almost physically! You are very nearly stunned by the overwhelming presence of evil that you detect here. But a moment later, the evil almost seems to disappear, though in another second, it comes back, stronger than ever. The evil that you sense is very, very powerful and overwhelming, but it does not appear constant and steady which is really unlike anything you’ve seen before. It is almost pulsating, like an on-then-off-then-on continuum. }
The old man does not look up and continues writing with his quill pen. He flicks his wrist again in the general direction of the group and mumbles a few words in a magical language. He grumbles, “Just leave me alone. I’m busy.”
OOC: Everyone not Nikolai As you enter the room, you feel filled with dread. Will save DC 21 or receive the shaken condition (fear, mind-affecting). (Not Nikolai, as you already failed that save and are shaken). A shaken character takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks.
Everyone including Nikolai Please make an additional will save, DC 24 or feel very sad: An additional -2 on attack rolls, saving throws, ability checks, skill checks, and weapon damage rolls. 25 to overcome spell resistance, so Trayvin does not need to make this save.

He suspects he is not seeing the room as it truly is, that he is seeing what the form at the desk wants him to see. He concentrates hard with all of the information he has at hand and tries to see the place clearly ( disbelieve illusion based on the detect evil and the spell attacks) Will 34 (natural 20) " This isn't right! We are under attack! With me now use Gargul's power to smite this evil thing and remove it from Gagul's sight!" (At 11th level, a paladin can expend two uses of her smite evil ability to grant the ability to smite evil to all allies within 10 feet, using her bonuses. Allies must use this smite evil ability by the start of the paladin's next turn and the bonuses last for 1 minute. Using this ability is a free action. Evil creatures gain no benefit from this ability. ) Sigvar uses his Holy Justice Aura and empowers all of his allies to smite the creature before them. He feels and hears Sigvars call though and the power coursing through him spurs him to action. He runs up to row 4 slides under the tables on the row till he gets to H4. he downs a potion of Cats grace as he does so. he stays low below the desk, and will move to I2 next round. He will also get his Slippery mind save then as well.

Anna-bat starts to feel afraid but she does not feel sad. Still though she finds a place to land and as soon as it is declared that she is under attack she uses her bull's strength SLA to boost her strength and declares the smite bonus against the old man.

Pru tries to continue to talk to the man, despite her sadness. Sigvar senses the evil and tries to see through any illusions that are in place. He does not detect any type of illusion. He yells out that the group is under attack! Trayvin doesn’t trust the old man and casts a spell to bolster defenses. He cannot tell if the spell affected the man. Michael runs up, dives under a table, and drinks a potion (makes it to E4 so far). Anna lands and prepares to attack. Nikolai is the first to physically attack the man, sending a shuriken his way while Pompous pauses a moment. The shuriken strikes high on the wall and the man looks up.
All of reality seems to shimmer for a just a moment. A second later there are things flying all around the room, headed for the ceiling (about 15 feet high) but also with large, shimmering cubes of magic all around.
OOC: Notes: And away we go! The second item was indeed a spell, but it was not charm, but is mind-affecting. Everyone: Reflex save, DC 26, or you are trapped in one of the force cages (see map). Note that the area in green (the whole room) is in reverse gravity. If you cannot fly, you’re headed for the ceiling (no save, no SR). There is a tremendous amount of debris in the room now, as well, all headed for the ceiling, giving the man cover from ranged attacks.
If failed fear: A shaken character takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks. If failed sadness: additional -2 on attack rolls, saving throws, ability checks, skill checks, and weapon damage rolls.

She falls into one of the force cages, which really isn't an impediment for her.
Pru would like to cast Reverse Gravity. As I understand the way the spell works, that would make gravity double-reversed--that is, acting normally. We're going to smack the ground pretty hard, but then gravity should work normally. At least, that's how I read it. Anyway, it'll be fun to find out.

While not being able to avoid the reversed gravity, it does not mean that he cannot control his fall and avoid damage, keep his feet and even flip the table over so it sits upright on the ceiling and he can hide under it. As the group starts to fall upwards, Pru reacts quickly and reverses the reverse gravity and people start heading back down towards the floor again with all the debris. The sudden shift in direction makes everyone’s stomach quickly change direction as well. Michael tries to head over to Pru only to realize he and Nikolai are actually in a separate cage! Sigvar and Pompous are the only two who are not trapped in the large, translucent cages. Sigvar turns and his massive body flies through the air directly at the man, headed in just above the desk. He takes a massive swing with his sword, but apparently not used to flying and attacking, he misses the seated man! Pompous fires a barrage of flaming arrows at the man, but a couple strike the wall behind him and others just plain miss him as well.
The old man stands up and tosses a tiny bit of sand in the direction of Sigvar (casting spell on defensive: success). He yells out, “Why won’t you people just leave me alone! Get out of my house!”
OOC: Everyone Fort save, DC 10, or be nauseated for 1 round from the sudden changes in direction. Sigvar and Michael: Will save DC 26 or fall asleep (mind-affecting, enchantment, compulsion).
The forcecages are the ones with bars. Moved Pompous to the side outside the forcecage, but with line of sight to the old man.

if it was not so dangerous and serious, this might be fun, up and down like this. but it's not and that force cage is going to seriously hamper Michaels style. He pushes the table out in front of himself and turns it sideways facing the old man. when he lands he pulls out his Hoopak and begins casting sling bullets at the geriatric fiend.

Pru gathers up Anna and Trayvin and quickly slips them out of the cage and to the side. As they do, Tryvin casts a spell on himself and calls out to the man, asking him about attacking the town. The man yells back, “I’m not attacking anyone! I haven’t left this tower in some time. I’m just studying magic and want to be left alone!”
Anna turns into a red dragon chimera manticore. In the process, she smashes into various bookcases, shelves, and other misc debris because there’s not really room for a red dragon chimera manticore in this place. The man cries out when items smash and break. She fires a tail spike in the direction of the man, but it flies wide of him.
Michael fights off the sleep spell that Sigvar cannot avoid and he turns to try and attack the man from behind a table. However, he finds that the force cage containing him has such small slots that he cannot attack (the bars have just half-inch gaps in them). Nikolai tries to shoot the old man with an arrow but finds he has the same problem as Michael, just the half inch gaps, which are not enough to shoot through.
Pompous yells out and takes careful aim once again. Two of his arrows strike the man in the chest and he looks down at them. The man looks up at Pompous and yells out, “Why? I ask you to leave and you attack me!?! I have not hurt you, but now I will!” He reaches one hand in his pocket and points the other at Pompous. A small light blue line appears and flies from his fingertip to Pompous’ chest. It slams into him with a crackle and Pompous is flooded with freezing cold throughout his body. He feels very, very cold. The man yells again, “Now get out of my house or I will destroy you all!”

When Pru appears Michael smiles and gives her a thumbs-up as he takes the exit she made. he was listening to the exchange between the old man and the rest of the party.
Maybe you were just studying magic, but your studies may have messed up the town. there are monsters coming from this castle and causing all kinds of chaos. not just your bog-standard monsters either. demons and extraplanar creatures of the destroy the town and call in the Iron dragons type. we just battled some sort of Red mist that drained blood and some kind of oozing mound of teeth and claws that did much the same thing. and that was just on the floor below this one. I cannot believe you didn't hear it. we are trying to find out what's going on.

Pru moves quickly, disappears, re-appears, then disappears and reappears again, whooshing through dimensional space and taking Michael and Nikolai out of the forcecage. Trayvin looks at the man and steps up to cast a spell around the clutter of the room on Sigvar. As far as he can tell, that spell had no effect at all on Sigvar, as he doesn’t wake up. The man just looks very, very, very old to Trayvin. His skin sags and looks quite thin. Nikolai thanks Pru and yells for everyone to hold off on the attacks. Pompous has no problem stopping, as he realizes he is barely alive from one attack from the man.
Anna flies forward and threatens the man. He casually waves his hand and a bright, long wall appears, filling the room. The wall glows with bright light and shimmering colors of the rainbow. It goes from floor to ceiling and one wall to the other, separating Anna from the man entirely. When Michael talks, the man turns to listen to him. He replies, “Oh, now that’s just silly.” He gestures to his papers and his desk and continues, “I haven’t left this spot in…” He thinks for a moment, then scratches his chin. A few whiskers tear off and fall to the floor. “Well, anyway, I have been here studying. Now, are you done being foolish and trying to hurt an old man?”

Apparently unable to break the sleep enchantment for the time being, Trayvin moves back to Pompous and helps him recover from the wizards' spell.
Actions: cast heal on Pompous. Pompous heals 130 hp and recovers any ailments.
Trayvin waits for the leaders to give the word, there still seems to be more to this situation than is obvious. Sigvar said there was evil, but it was not constant? Trayvin wonders what is going on, and how the Agents are going to defeat such an obviously powerful opponent.

Trayvin waits for the leaders to give the word, there still seems to be more to this situation than is obvious. Sigvar said there was evil, but it was not constant? Trayvin wonders what is going on, and how the Agents are going to defeat such an obviously powerful opponent.

Trayvin turns to the injured Pompous and quickly restores him to health. Pru can tell that the spell the man cast is prismatic wall and that wall shimmers and shines, filling the room with lots of colorful light. She speaks to the man, but is also prepared for a magical attack. Anna-manticore-chimera looks at the wall, disappointed that she cannot pass through it. Pompous whispers an idea to Trayvin while Nikolai and Michael speak to the man.
The man stands up while listening to Michael and reaches over to pat Sigvar gently on the head. He looks over the group on his side of the prismatic wall. He says, “You are clearly very confused. I am quite sure it has not been that long. I’ve been engrossed in my studies, that is all. I don’t need healing, I don’t need fresh air, I’m quite satisfied here, alone.” When the town is mentioned, he continues, “Pah, the town is the town. They know better than to disturb a wizard when he’s studying. Evil? Good? Who is to say which is which? I just need to learn a little bit more and then perhaps I’ll stop in and visit the town.”
A sudden tic overtakes the man’s face momentarily, and his face bends almost as if in pain. It lasts for a just a single moment, but enough that it’s easily noticeable. Only those who have some sort of protection from evil active: Highlight to display spoiler: {A sudden, very strong wave of evil emanates from the man, but as quickly as it appears, it seems to disappear}.

Pru continues to attempt to talk with the man, as does Michael. Pompous wonders about the evil he just felt. He wonders about what’s going on with the creature, but his knowledge of arcana does not help him here. Trayvin warns Anna away from the shimmering wall and Anna starts pacing, frustrated that she cannot get through the wall. Nikolai joins in the conversation and talks about evil.
The man listens to Michael, but the expression on his face says he’s not really listening. He shakes his head and waves his hand dismissively when Michael mentions all the monsters and demons. When Nikolai mentions evil three times, the man’s face twists again and the skin seems to tighten and shrink around his face, making him look almost dead. He grimaces and points a small rod at Nikolai as he howls, “Evil? Oh, you think you know evil? You do not know evil!”

Pru and the counterspell. The man is casting a spell. Pru gets a chance to counterspell. First Pru needs to make a spellcraft check as a free action to attempt to identify the spell. The DC on that is 24. Assuming Pru makes that check, she can tell the spell is Hold Monster, Mass. To counter the spell, she needs to actually cast that spell, which she can’t do, or attempt to cast dispel magic (which she can, I believe). To do that, she needs a dispel check. That check should be a d20+caster level (15). The DC for that is 31. So IF Pru makes the spellcraft AND the dispel check, Pru spectacularly counters a powerful spell and Pru knows what spell was just cast. If she fails the dispel check, everyone except Trayvin and Pompous need to make a will save, DC 29 or be held!

Nikolai astutely notices the nearly imperceptible change on the old man's face to that of something more like an undead (Knowledge Religion check). Being an expert on Undead (Favored Enemy) he searches his memory of his studies on Undead, specially to Liches, as the rumor was that a lich was the cause of the evil.

OOC: Moving through Friends does not hamper Movement. Stepping on prone Sigvar would be Difficult Terrain. Stepping up onto the desk, across it and to the corner - well, I'll let you figure that out. Nikolai has 60' Move to play with and Double Move if necessary.

Pru watches the spell and heroically reacts, quickly blocking the spell! There is a clash in the air as magic crashes around, but the end result is a cancelation and there is nothing. Pru tries to continue the talking, asking the man to please stop. Sigvar snores while Trayvin and Pompous start searching their side of the room. Pompous looks for containers, but mostly where he is there are bookshelves. From what he can see, the books are very, very old. Touching some of them almost makes the pages disintegrate into dust. A few pages are so faded that he cannot read anything on them at all. Trayvin searches as well and in the corner of the room he finds a few very old cloaks. One crumbles as he touches it and leaning up against the wall behind where the cloak was, he finds a pure white staff with detailed silver runes on it, covered with dust, but it appears to be valuable. Anna ponders what will happen to her iron body if she walked through the magical wall of light. She thinks that she could avoid many of the features of the wall, but there are powerful spells related to the mind and transportation to other planes that she doesn’t know how to get past or exactly how they would affect her.
Michael reaches out to Sigvar and carefully slices Sigvar’s ear, trying to do it unobserved. He doesn’t see the old man react, but Sigvar is awakened by the action! Michael continues to talk to the man, trying to drop some hints as he talks. Nikolai decides he is going to see what he can do to provoke the man. He rushes forward as he thinks about what he knows. Nikolai only: Highlight to display spoiler: {With that roll and favored enemy, you’re sure this is undead. You’re sure it’s a lich. But there’s something “off” about this lich. It doesn’t present with the evil you’d associate with a lich. In all your studies, the lich is horribly evil and destructive and should have tried to kill you all on sight. For some reason, this one did not, and that is totally out of character for a lich. You have no idea why or what, but something’s just off.}
As he talks, Nikolai moves through his friends and towards the old man. He steps carefully around the waking Sigvar. As he does, the man watches him, steps back, and steps right through the shining wall! As you watch him, his face appears to settle back to normal, losing its tightness and smoothing out, sagging once again. He looks confused. He looks over at the manticore chimera and reaches out a little, as if to pet it. He shakes his head and says, “Now what was I saying? Yes, I was studying.” He looks at the manticore chimera and says, “Now did I summon you here for something?”

just before the Dimension Door spell..... Sigvar raises his head and says " Ow! What the heck? Oh, I'm back, what'd I miss"
After the Dimension Door spell.... Sigvar rises into the air and centers himself among the agents, getting as many of them within 10 feet of himself as he can both to protect them and bolster them.(he is flying after all) He hears Nikolai's words and knows what he saw with detect evil so he tries a few things. He casts Dispel Evil and his entire body glows with white light. He turns to the old man and smites him using double the power required so that the other agents near him can do so as well. He then reaches out and tries to touch the old man hoping the thing he thinks is inside him can be either banished from this plane, or at least banished from the old mans body. Touch Attack hits AC 41 touch
At 11th level, a paladin can expend two uses of her smite evil ability to grant the ability to smite evil to all allies within 10 feet, using her bonuses. Allies must use this smite evil ability by the start of the paladin's next turn and the bonuses last for 1 minute. Using this ability is a free action. Evil creatures gain no benefit from this ability.

Trayvin checks out the staff he has found. Indeed the staff emanates magic, moderate conjuration magic, in fact. He tells Anna not to walk through the wall as the man steps through the wall himself. Anna ponders going around the wall and whether this old man is really involved.
Then all hell breaks loose. Pru uses her magic to bring the group back to the other side of the wall. Because of the force cages and the furniture, everyone is practically on top of everyone else. Sigvar is flying, but just above the mass of people. Everyone is trying to be in the same place at once and Anna can’t even move a wing or she will likely knock someone or something over.
OOC: The only way to get people within range of the old man is for Pru to drop everyone in a pile there on the map, so hopefully that’s what you were going for.
Nikolai and Sigvar, will save DC 25 or fall asleep. This is from an effect from getting close to the old man, so actually will happen before your actions. If you fail, you won’t be able to complete your actions. And this is separate from the spell he cast on Sigvar before, it’s an effect on him that affects you because you’ve moved close to him. Unfortunately, I’ll have to hold off on other actions until we have the results of those two rolls because if you both fall asleep, that’s going to be very different from if neither of you fall asleep. If you can get those rolls in this weekend, I can try and get another post up Sunday evening. Sorry for the momentary delay, everyone!

Nikolai moves first. He calls out to the others and jumps on the man, trying to get a grip on him. To Nikolai, the man feels very old and frail. There seem to be almost no muscles on the man, just skin and bone. But as he grabs the man, the man’s body twists and turns. He looks at Nikolai in surprise. As he turns and slips out of Nikolai’s grasp, he says, “Why are you doing this to me? What is wrong with you?” Sigvar gathers all his ability versus evil and reaches out to attempt to banish the evil back to another plane. He touches the man and expends the spell. The man flinches and jerks. He quickly steps back through the wall again, leaving everyone on the opposite side of the wall. He yells out, “You people need to leave me alone! I just want to research! Please get out of here before I have to really hurt you!”
Anna tries to talk to the man, but it is too late, since the others physically attacked him as does Michael.

Pru actually doesn't do any of those things; she readies an action to counterspell because the guy could just saunter back through the wall any time he wants.

Since the wall is 5' thick to end up on the other side an AoO should be triggered as it takes a move rather than just a 5' step. Sigvar has already used Smite evil, I guess successfully and will smash the man if he attempts to cross back to this side of the wall. " Search, I've got this."
So in a nutshell, Sigvar has reach, if he stays parallel to the man and the man crosses he will be moving within reach and trigger an AoO. AoO hits AC 35 for 38 damage,53 damage if the man is an evil outside, dragon or undead + 8 holy damage

"Hey guys, my studies of liches just before we left indicate that such a phylactery holding his life force is not usually found near him for this exact reason. If we did manage to destroy that body, he'd be too vulnerable if the phylactery was in the same room. He's got it carefully hidden somewhere near hear."
Turning to the others, he agrees that a re-evaluation of their tactics is in order. "As long as he keeps moving back and forth across that energy barrier we'll be handicapped. If we split up to catch him on whichever side he goes to we risk a lot of harm to us. It would appear that as long as we don't bother him, he won't bother us. It's like he's got a dual personality, more like a dual soul, one that is the old man who built this place and one that has taken up residence in that body and occasionally takes control. Right now the Good Guy prevails, otherwise we'd be worse off. So we got to figure out how to separate the two. We can stay right here and plan, or go downstairs."

Pru suggests the group stop and prepare, now that the man is on the opposite side of the wall from everyone else. She prepares a counterspell, just in case. Sigvar stands near the wall and watches the man. He prepares for the man to step through the wall. The wall is very, very bright. While it is difficult to stare directly at and through the wall, he can see a figure moving and attempts to follow the figure to ensure that it does not step back through the wall. Anna wonders what the group is doing. Trayvin mentions that he found a staff, but is confused as well (to attempt to identify, take 3 rounds to examine the item and make a spellcraft check, DC 23). Michael, as confused as everyone else, suggests they leave the man. Nikolai suggests that they need to find the phylactery. After the very through searching on the spiral level, he is sure that it is not on that floor, at least. He suggests the group needs a plan to separate the evil from the good in the man. Pompous mentions that perhaps the item was here somewhere, in the pile of many things scattered about the room. Looking at all the bookshelves, containers, tables, bottles, books, cloaks, junk, and more, he realizes that it is really going to take a long time if he wanted to search this room. Actually, the entire team might search for a day and not look through everything in this room, presuming someone actually knew exactly what they were looking for…
The old man, seeing the group slow their attacks, nods at them and says, “Yes, yes indeed. Why don’t you leave. Just leave me alone so I can get back to studying. That’s all I want to do right now. I’m just an old man who likes to research.” He stays on his side of the wall, but watches the group.

To the group, in a lowered tone, he says, "The phylactery will radiate powerful magic. That would be one way to quickly scan this room, provided our own magic doesn't interfere. We'll pretend to leave and go down the stairs a ways while someone stays to scan for magic. Michael can stay at the top of the stairs to keep an eye on the old man while the scanning is done. We need to rule out this place as the hiding place for the phylactery, and then go from there. I'm certainly not worried he's going to try to 'get away".

When it drops we defeat the source of the evil and go home as heroes and get paid." Nikolai continues to attempt to taunt the man, yelling at him repeatedly. He tells the others that they need to search for magic. Trayvin continues to search the room for magic. He tries to ignore the smaller signals, which come from a number of the books and things in the room. Those bits only radiate little bits of magic, perhaps leftover from something in the past. Of course from each of the Agents there is very strong magic. As well there is powerful magic radiating from the forcecages and the bright wall. He can’t see past the wall for magic, the magic in the wall overwhelms the detection. He can detect around on the edges and far walls, and he does spot a small iron rod seemingly discarded on the ground partway underneath a bookcase that radiates strongly of magic, but yet does not appear to have a school associated with that magic.
Michael and Pru make for the stairs, but pause as the others don’t quite move. Anna and Pompous also start, but stop when Sigvar starts talking. Sigvar stays opposite the old man and says that he’s not leaving because they’ve found a source of evil and he’s going to deal with it. "It's true; the wall won't last forever," Pru says. "However, [Spellcraft 26] it's going to last for a long darned time. I mean, if I cast this spell it would last about two and a half hours. And this caster is way more powerful. And I'll tell you all now--I can't get rid of it magically. I'd have to cast seven different spells in a row--in the correct order. And I don't remember the order, and I'm pretty sure I don't have all the right spells anyway."

"And when we look for the phylactery," she continues [Spellcraft 23], "we probably shouldn't just detect for magic. There's a pretty easy spell called Magic Aura that lets you add a magic aura to something that doesn't have one--or remove an aura from something that should have one. It doesn't work on really powerful auras, so maybe it couldn't be used on a phylactery, but I wouldn't count on it."

Trayvin moves to go and pick up the rod, it may prove to be important. If we're not leaving, and the wall isn't coming down for a while, then we need a new plan. He walks over to Sigvar and whispers, [I]"We need to try a different strategy to get this guy. We aren't leaving. Just going down stairs to plan. Now you can come down with us, or stay here to guard. It won't hurt to keep an eye on him, see what changes to his face occurs over time. But putting a plan together in here isn't a good idea.
So, if keeping a watch on him is what you feel you need to do, that's ok. We are going down stairs to plan and catch you up on what we decide. He's not going anywhere, it would seem. So we just might search this keep again for that phylactery. If so, we'll let you know."[/b]
He turns to Pru and asks, "Don't we have a spell we can cast on Sigvar so we know what's going on in here in case the old man decides to harass his guard?"
With that said, he heads on down the stairs to the level below, knowing that Sigvar will do what he feels he needs to do.

The Agents continue to discuss what to do while the old man watches them, or at least it appears that he is, through the bright wall. Pru mentions that the wall will last a very long time and that she can’t stop it. She also mentions that the phylactery may be very hard to find. Trayvin grabs the magical rod and finds it is longer than it looked – most of it was under the shelf and the rod is actually three feet long. Trayvin thinks that perhaps they should keep the man talking. Michael and Nikolai whisper to Sigvar, hoping the old man won’t overhear them. Nikolai suggests that everyone go down the stairs, but tells Sigvar he can stay. Anna wonders if she can try and confuse the guy again and work a different angle with him. Pompous looks and listens and prepares to go down the stairs. However, when the group heads for the stairs, they realize the stairs are actually inside one of the force cages! The man waves his hand and the force cages disappear.

If it isn't a lich possessing the body, then there won't be a phylactery. Whereas before Nikolai was simply trying to determine if the old man was an Undead or not, and the answer was obvious when his whole body changed for a few seconds, now Nikolai sits back and ponders about what they know so far and if it might match anything he's studied about.

Pru casts a spell to keep the Agents in touch with one another. As she heads downstairs, Trayvin asks her about the staff and rod (3 rounds and spellcraft 23 and 32 to identify). Anna moves over to the wall and waits for the old man as he watches the others head down the stairs. When the Agents arrive on the next floor down, they remember how dark that floor was. Michael suggests that the man isn’t a lich and doesn’t know how to deal with his power. Nikolai isn’t sure.
Anna remains upstairs with the old man. She tries to watch him through the wall, but the wall is still very bright. She tries to keep up with him, and it appears he is still at his desk, but she isn’t really sure what else might be happening behind the wall.
The group downstairs gathers and thinks. Nikolai racks his brain for what he knows about the lich. He knows that they are indeed intelligent undead and from all he has seen, this old man certainly meets that definition. From all observations, this looks like a lich. He knows that yes, when a person becomes a lich, they need to transfer their soul into a phylactery. This is often a difficult process, but no one understands exactly how to do it because it is different for every lich. Legends describe that to become a lich, a person does indeed need to study and research a great deal to determine how to do what needs to be done. Rumors have it that the actual process is difficult, but no one has really recorded that actual act, so that transfer process is relatively unknown. While any object can serve as that phylactery, it is often a box or a gem, and usually of great value. He has never heard of anything similar to a lich creature doing any kind of possession of another person’s body. When someone becomes a lich, their soul leaves their body, and that’s it.
OOC: Note: the stairs to the next floor are narrow and spiral. It will take at least 3 rounds for any one person to make it from one floor to the next.

so we have to find the phylactery and we have to destroy the body. but if we destroy the body without the Phylactery, then the lich just regenerates. what if we bound him hand and foot, gagged him and then buried him. he's still "undead" and whole, just put in an obulié for a few hundred years. . Michael thinks again.
you know if I were a lich, I would not have my phylactery here, in this castle. I'd have it somewhere else far from here. maybe in the town or hidden somwhere obscure.

Trayvin wonders about the old man and decides that the group simply needs more information. Pru examines the rod and staff. She can’t tell what the rod is, but she can tell that the staff is a Staff of Healing! She wonders if there is somewhere else in the castle they need to look. From what she can tell, they’re on the top floor, simply based on the number of staircases they’ve walked up. Michael thinks that maybe it is a lich and it just doesn’t know it? And he thinks that if he were a lich, he’s keep his phylactery far away. But of course, that would be if he was a lich who planned ahead to be a lich. Nikolai mentions that he had trouble trying to pin the guy, which does seem odd for an old man. He also wonders if there are other places the group has yet to find or search in the castle. Pompous wonders if the group is in over their head and tries to think of what he knows of liches. He can’t come up with more than Nikolai did.
Meanwhile, Anna tries to make friends with the old man. She calls out that she was summoned. A moment later the man drops the wall of light. He looks at her across his desk. He says, “I summoned you?” She replies with, “What is thy bidding master?” He steps to the side of his desk so he can reach out and pat Anna on the head while musing, “Well, I must have summoned it, I’m the only one here. But why would I summon something as odd as this?”
OOC: Anna: Will save, DC 21 or be shaken in fear from being so close to the man. Will save, DC 25 or fall asleep (another effect based on simply being close to him). Also, Fortitude save, DC 24 or be paralyzed.

if Michael is now invisible, he scoots back upstairs while the group searches. if they are still talking he puts his two cents in. I don't think you can become a lich by accident. from what I've heard it's really involved, it does not matter though in the grand scheme of things. He's the one who's been causing the problems, there is something wrong with him. So we need to either figure out a way of curing him or we need to kill him. because as things stand he's going to kill everyone in the town before too long. now killing a wizard as powerful as he, is no mean feat. We've got to get the drop on him and either grapple him bind him in such a way that he cannot use spells. but with that aura around him, that's going to be hard. taking him out at range is no good either, he's got more firepower than we do.

Trayvin appraises the staff and Pru wonders who should carry it. While they’re looking, Michael says he doesn’t think you can become a lich by accident, but since he’s never actually gone through the process himself, he can’t actually be quite sure. The more he thinks about it, the more he wonders if you could actually become a lich by accident. He decides they should probably just kill him, but he has no idea how. Nikolai rushes back up the stairs with Michael and the others. Sigvar says he doesn’t care, he wants that thing dead. But he doesn’t want to just walk up the stairs.
Trayvin likes the dimension door spell, too, but Pru mentions that she can’t bring everyone in one trip. Michael says he can sneak in invisible and Nikolai says he can rush up the stairs, too. Sigvar prepares.
Anna talks over the bond, then suddenly stops talking. She lies down, fast asleep.
OOC: What happened? I missed a day? Yikes. I completely missed the Wold yesterday, all around. Very sorry about that, work was so crazy I didn’t even realize that I hadn’t stopped in the Wold at all.
Just to confirm the plan: Michael needs someone to make him invisible, then Michael will head up the stairs followed by Nikolai and Pompous; after a little bit Pru will dimension door the rest into the room. Where in the room are you going to attempt to arrive?
Re: time: It has been maybe 5-7 minutes since you were in battle, so short-duration items will have worn off.

Pru casts invisibility, haste, and then dimension doors everyone but Nikolai upstairs. Michael prepares for combat, but before he can step up the stairs, he is caught up in Pru’s spell. He finds himself in the middle of the room. He starts sneaking around towards the old man. Trayvin is ready. Pompous prepares his bow just before Pru zaps them through.
Nikolai runs up the stairs and slams into a barrier of some kind at the top of the stairs. He cannot see anything, but he cannot make it through the floor. There is a very solid barrier preventing him from entering the room now. It is even with the floor of the room.
In the room, manticore-Anna sleeps away in front of the old man’s desk, easily blocking any approach from that direction. As Michael moves around, he sees that the old man is watching him. Before he can get close to the man (still about 30’ away) the man points at him and says, “You look like you are up to no good. I do not like that, little evil one.” He mutters a few words at Michael.
