We don't use initiative, of course, but the way I read that, Pru's turn is over, and she doesn't get another turn until after the bad guy goes again. So, no rolling dispel checks for me.]

Sigvar continues his attacks on the old man, pausing briefly to wake Anna. Sigvar puts all he has into trying to kill the undead. Despite all his attempts, only one attack appears to reach through his robes and chop into him (AC 35). Michael moves forward and tries to grab onto the man. The man squirms and moves, and Michael cannot seem to get a grip on him. Pompous pauses and wonders how he can aid the others in the battle. Anna is finally awakened by Sigvar’s stab of the horns. Nikolai prepares to join the battle, but can’t get past the barrier on his own. Trayvin casts a spell to help defend the group.
The old man bellows, “ENOUGH!” Michael and Sigvar see his face twist and turn. The black of his eyes expands to fill his entire eye socket, blacking out his eyes entirely. The skin on his face tightens and twists, pulling unnaturally taught across his face. He raises his hands and magical power flows out from his body. Four massive balls of fire appear from the man’s fingertips. They fly through the air at Pru, Sigvar, and Michael. They hit Pru and Sigvar and they explode in a massive fireball that encompasses most of the room! Papers, books, and shelves light on fire. Heat absolutely fills the space. A fraction of a second later, a massive yellowish-green cloud appears, obscuring all sight in the corner of the room, filling the room with poisonous gas.
OOC: Michael, Will save, DC 25 or fall asleep. Trayvin’s spell can reach Pru, Sigvar, Michael, Anna, and Pompous. Nikolai is too far away. (Spell penetration rolls made to overcome the SR). Old man spells cast on defensive, so no AOO. Pru: Hit by ball of fire. 12 points bludgeoning damage (no save). -4 penalty to fire save (below). Michael: Missed by ball of fire, but ball explodes next to you. Sigvar: Hit by two balls of fire. 24 points bludgeoning damage (no save). -4 penalty to fire save (below). Fiery explosions: Due to the locations of the explosions, Pru, Trayvin, Sigvar, Michael, and Anna need to make four saves (Michael if asleep, no saves). Pompous will miss one, but will still have to make 3 separate saves. The saves are reflex, DC 30. Damages are: 18, 28, 23, and 17. Successful save means half damage. If you have fire resistance, the spell specifies that you add up all damage first, then apply resistance. Michael, Sigvar, Anna: Fort save, DC 25. Failure means you take 3 points con damage. Success you take 1 point. (Poison) Cloud: obscures all sight beyond 5 feet. A creature within 5 feet has concealment (20% miss chance). Creatures further away have total concealment (50% miss chance, cannot see targets).
Constitution Damage: Damage to your Constitution score causes you to take penalties on your Fortitude saving throws. In addition, multiply your total Hit Dice by this penalty and subtract that amount from your current and total hit points. Lost hit points are restored when the damage to your Constitution is healed. A character with a Constitution score of 0 is dead.

OOC: You know, I hate when I have to delay things and make combats take a bit longer than one round each day, but with these higher level battles, it seems to be the case more often than not. I hope those who aren’t as directly affected aren’t too put off by the slowness of the battle – I usually end up spending quite some time looking up many rules to ensure we’re doing everything correctly!
For this move: Sigvar has stepped forward, presumably to avoid the 50% miss chance. However, that puts him in the range of the sleep affect: Sigvar needs a will save, DC 25, or he will fall asleep before he can make those attack actions. If that save is made, for each attack there is still a 20% miss chance because of the extensive thick fog. So if you can please add those rolls, I can tell what’s going to happen next!
As a note for Michael, yes, this particular spell description is specific that any time a creature enters the area, even if they have previously saved, they have to save again. As I read more about the conditions, it appears that in the sleep condition, Michael is helpless, and that means he has no dex bonus to the saves and has an effective dex of 0. I think that means instead of a +8 for his reflex saves, he actually receives a -5, effectively -13 overall to his reflex save. And on top of that, the description of evasion says it does not work if the rogue is helpless. I think that means he actually fails all the saves and takes 100% of the damage: 86 points.

Sigvar falls asleep and Trayvin steps up to try and wake him. He succeeds as the old man reaches a bony hand out to touch Sigvar. Anna tries to find the man in the cloud, but using her scent ability only makes it more difficult as the noxious gasses smell quite bad. She fires off a tail spike, but does not hit him. Pru casts dimension door and brings her and Nikolai back into the room (where?) Pompous finishes casting his spell and the elemental appaears. It heads into the fog, causing all sorts of twisting and swirling winds and greenish fog spinning in all directions.
OOC: Sleep did check the SR and beat it, sorry. The fog says no SR. The old man didn’t have a miss chance on the touch to Michael as it wasn’t an attack, it was literally just touching him…and Michael is helpless.
Sigvar, fort save, DC 25 or become paralyzed.
Michael, Sigvar, Trayvin: Fort save, DC 25. Failure means you take 2 points con damage. Success you take 1 point. (Poison) Yes, every round due to the cloud.
Cloud: obscures all sight beyond 5 feet. A creature within 5 feet has concealment (20% miss chance). Creatures further away have total concealment (50% miss chance, cannot see targets). With the elemental spinning in the fog, those numbers will increase to 35% miss chance and 75% miss chances.

Pru appears with Nikolai right in the middle of the poisonous cloud! At least you think that’s where they are, it is very hard to see any distance at all in the twisting, turning vapors and poison. Pru tries to get rid of the green cloud, but her spell just doesn’t seem like it’s powerful enough. Sigvar spins and turns and attacks where he thinks the old man is. He feels like his sword strikes true for some damage, but in the swirling fog, he just can’t be completely sure, though he feels his holy power destroying evil! Anna waves her mighty wings and the clouds of gas spin and twist even more! The smoke hits the walls, tables, and everything around. It does not appear to have anywhere to go, as there’s no openings to the outside world, so there’s no way for fresh air to enter the room (even the stairs have a wall of force over them). Pompous yells at his whirlwind to find and attack the wizard. It spins towards the corner and the fog continues to move around. It is chaos in the corner and with the gas.
OOC: Pru, Sigvar, Michael, and Nikolai: Fort Save DC 25 or 1 con damage, failure: 1 con damage. So 1 con damage. Michael (if not paralyzed): Will save DC 25 or fall asleep. (Previous rounds: Michael: Fort save DC 25 or 2 con damage, success is 1 damage; Fort save DC 25 or be paralyzed; Will save DC 25 or fall asleep).
Pompous: Please make attack rolls for the elemental, just in case it does happen to find the old man.
Re: Smite evil. Yes. It would seem that it would last through the sleep.
Re: Touch attack. After reading and re-reading a lot of rules and FAQs, I think maybe he does need to make an attack roll for that one. In the first case, the attack roll would have been vs AC 2 and since the two were occupying the same square (during a grapple attempt), I don’t think the fog would have obscured the vision. In the second case it would have been AC 3 (I’m reading a -9 to AC for helpless characters, plus an additional subtraction of whatever the dex bonus is because a character has a dex of 0 when helpless).

[I assume Pru's 31 Arcana was enough to identify the spell. Is it a Cloudkill?]
Pru takes a point of Constitution damage. She watches the vapors swirl around. "The gasses can't get out," she says between coughs. She looks around. They haven't definitely determined that this is the top floor, but it seems likely.
Pru casts Disintegrate. For this casting, she wants to "simply disintegrate as much as a 10-foot cube of nonliving matter" per the spell description. The 10-foot cube she wants is the ceiling above HI-23. I assume that a 14, while pathetic, is enough to hit the Touch AC of a ceiling. Since the ceiling is not a creature, I assume there is no miss chance. Let me know if I've assumed wrong. :)

Iron manticore Anna flies back slightly and starts flapping her wings to try and move the cloud out the hole. Michael realizes that he is hitting this guy with his hoopak, but it's all just his spirit doing it. he notices his body when Sigvar lays on hands. while he is dead and can look around in the spirit world he focuses on the old man if he is a lich and does have a phylactery maybe I can see the silver chain holding his spirit to his bones. not that he can tell the others, but he's been raised before, maybe the info can be useful.

while looking around he vents his spleen a bit both me and Sigvar mentioned that it would probably be best to just knock the whole bloody castle down on his head, let the magic-using bag of rotten guts spell his way out of that. Warrds fingers! we always use our strengths against an opponent's weaknesses, but not this time...no...we just charge in like we did that first time and somehow expect a differnt result. OOC: the Air Elemental has the Whirlwind special attack. In this form, it can lift creatures off the ground and toss them, per size rules. It does not say that the Whirlwind would dissipate any fog, but being a tornado, it should suck up the fog as it goes and trap it, 'as seen on TV'. If anything, the wind gusts inside the whirlwind should be enough to expedite the expulsion of the fog out the ceiling if the elemental is commanded to direct its wind in that direction.
Just saying.

Sigvar fights off the worst of the poison and reaches out to heal Michael. When he touches the body, he realizes that he is indeed too late: Michael is dead. He hovers and looks around the room detecting evil. He scans around the room, but from what he can tell, there is just evil all around the room. There are no clear concentrations of evil that he can detect. Trayvin calls out to Pompous to get his wind wall going while Anna keeps flapping her wings, trying to get the fog to move.
Michael tries to attack, but realizes that he is nothing more than a spirit at the moment. He yells and screams, but no one can hear him, or at least none of the Agents can hear him. Nikolai rushes into the fog cloud and pulls Michael’s body back, out of the cloud. Pru decides to get out and turns into an air elemental and heads out the hole in the ceiling. When she gets outside she sees nothing surprising: it is just the large flat roof of the castle. The sun is shining and the air is calm.
Pompous casts a wind wall and tries to shove the fog cloud up and out the hole. It clearly starts to work, but only in that two foot wide pathway. His elemental spins and twists, but it cannot seem to locate the old man.

Sigvar looks around in the sudden calm as a few small fires still burn. He wonders if the creature is gone, if it is coming back, or something else. He feels that he could kill it if he just had a chance. Thinking deep inside himself, he feels the power of Gargul still active inside him. He strongly suspects that the evil creature is still alive, but he has no idea where it could be.
Trayvin checks on Michael who is still not quite sure which way is up. He really feels like the Agents were really outmatched there and that the old man wasn’t even really trying to kill them. Perception, DC 25: Highlight to display spoiler: {If you think about it, the old man actually only attacked in response to attacks. The castle still feels quite oppressive and dark, despite the large hole in the ceiling. Those detecting evil can still feel the evilness of the entire castle and area. Clearly it was centered on this level of the castle, but it also permeated the entire building. Nikolai wonders if there is a basement. He checks and the field blocking the stairs is indeed gone.
Meanwhile, Pompous sits down in an area not burned to a crisp. He is really and truly feeling the loss in this battle. He knows how close he was to dying and that Michael was killed, at least for a time. He is indeed shaken to the core.

Anna wonders where the man could have gone and Pru responds that he could be anywhere with a teleport. Michael suggests that it is the castle and that they should destroy it. Looking around the castle, she realizes that her disintegrate might take out a few walls, but it will take dozens, if not a hundred of them, to disintegrate the entire castle. Nikolai searches the desk while Pompous sits in misery. When Nikolai opens a drawer, he finds four quite shiny gold and silver rings in a drawer by themselves. Trayvin asks for light and Pru provides some dancing lights to help with the search. The floor of the dark floor is dusty, dirty, and dark. There are bits of cloth and scraps of wood that you guess might have been furniture many years ago there. Anna sniffs around, trying to track the lich, but on the dark floor she smells mostly the nastiness that was the horrible aberration monsters that attacked the Agents on that floor.
Michael ponders more about the engineering of the building. He realizes it really is going to take a lot of work to try and take down the castle. Nikolai suggests that perhaps some dispel magic can work on the dark floor and that’s when Michael has the insight (with that perception roll) that perhaps instead of physically taking down the castle, maybe they could find other ways to purify the evil. This might actually be a nice castle with a good view if a couple windows were placed in the right places… and now that there’s access to the roof, a nice rooftop garden might fit in place…
OOC: The dark floor was the floor just below the top floor with the lich. It can be seen in page 14 here. The pillar was the stairway to the upper level. This entire floor is covered with deeper darkness and is quite dark. There was little else on this floor when you came through: dead bodies, scraps of wood and paper trash, and the magical cloth that you found in the corner (that I think you identified).

Nikolai wonders if the castle might be better suited for the use of the Agents once the lich is gone from the place. The Agents continue to look around the old castle and ponder their options. They have really searched all over the place for the lich, but as Pur pointed out, if the thing teleported away, it might be on the Southern Continent, for all she knows. Sigvar, however, is still quite sure that the thing is still alive somewhere, and his blood aches to destroy it.
Anna ponders getting fully healed up and where they might stay the night. Trayvin looks around the dark walls and still thinks the Agents might be able to make the place usable for someone else. He wonders if they should keep looking for the lich. Sigvar mentions that he and Trayvin can work to heal the party from the ravages of the lich. Pru mentions that she can create a place that is completely secure in extradimensional space. She needs a few items to make it appear, but Nikolai points out that Anna’s bag could probably produce those items rather quickly. Nikolai looks around the winding hall level and pays close attention to the tapestries. Appraise, DC 20: Highlight to display spoiler: {One of the tapestries has historic value and it in excellent shape, worth 10,000 gold. Sigvar insists that the lich must be destroyed… if only he could find it. Pru wonders about the capabilities of the well, but from what she might know about such things, the item itself would not be aligned, it would just be capable of being an opening. Of course, now that it’s been moved from the initial location, there’s no telling where it would open up to now; or, indeed, where it opened up to before. Trayvin wonders if the well could be a threat even now, while folded up. He suggests that perhaps the group could head back to town. Michael realizes the folly of taking on the lich at their current status. Nikolai thinks that if the creatures came from the well, that threat is removed. But he is worried about that lich. She asks for the components for the spell, which Anna points out that she is already holding in her hands. Nikolai suggests that Sigvar renew the smite later and wants to go outside. Pompous agrees and Michael watches carefully as the group heads towards the outside.
Once outside, they can see time has passed and it is later in the day now. The castle and the surrounding lands look the same as when they went inside. Pru steps just a little ways away from the entrance to the castle and starts working her magic. The miniature door quickly expands and the marble and spoon seem to disappear through the door. A moment later the door itself vanishes and in its place is a faint shimmering that is barely visible. The space is four feet wide and eight feet high. The space beckons to Pru, but only those she permits are able to enter it…

Pru casts her spell in a likely spot, then invites her companions into the extradimensional space.
The spell is called Mage's Magnificent Mansion, but Pru has very little experience with mansions. Or, for that matter, with magnificence. So her spell is more like Mage's Really Big Farmhouse. The interior is clean, homey, and altogether wholesome. There is a staff of near-transparent servants, ready to perform any task asked of them.
[The rest of this post is pure self-indulgence, and nobody needs to read it.]
Each person has their own room, with an iron bedstead sized to fit them. The beds have clean, sweet-smelling straw ticks and plump down pillows dressed in snowy white linen. Colorful quilts are piled high on the beds, and equally colorful braided rag rugs are scattered on the scrubbed wooden floor. Aside from the bed, each room has a washstand with pitcher and basin, a writing-desk, and a small shrine to the Gods of the Wold.
The windows overlook a twilight apple orchard, the apple blossoms visible as clouds of white. Muslin curtains flutter in the blossom-scented breeze. (Of course, the apple orchard isn't really there, and climbing out the window to visit it would be a really bad idea.)
The common areas consist of a kitchen, a dining area, and a sitting room. All have scrubbed wooden floors, simple but comfortable furniture, and daylight views of the apple orchard.

Michael snoops around the large farmhouse, he strips out of his armor and lets one of the servants clean and mend it for him, He also gets a bath and some chow. he then puts on a fluffy cotton bathrobe and cleans his blades himself. after that's done he writes in his journal for a few hours, trying to capture the last few days. in a way, he feels more powerful than he's ever felt in his life, yet in another way, he feels more vulnerable, like now he's big enough that the big boys will notice him, where before he was so small he was below notice.
still, he welcomes the challenge, so he thinks about how they can turn the tide against this lich.
Okay guys...what's the deal with that depression sleep aura he had around him? can we do something about that? Who's the best Wrestler among us? is that you Nikolai? (mine is CMB 16 CMD 30). if you could grapple him, throw him away from a corner so Sigvar and I could double team him we could take him down quite quickly. but the sleep is a deal-breaker, that I don't know how to get around.

"Thank you Pru, for this Magnificent Farmhouse. You did marvelously well," Nikolai congratulates Pru.
"It could be the lich had spells like Stoneskin and such as well. I tried to grapple him but he managed to break loose each time."
OOC: Aid Another also works on attacks so if Nikolai tries to grapple him, anyone within melee range can use Aid Another to boost the grapple attack number.
Nikolai finds his room and deposits his gear, then heads back out to the common rooms to join in strategizing.

Micheal muses I wonder if he has that item...what's it called something freedom of movement.?
" What's the chance that we could go get some more gear. Heck, maybe bring back some additional troops with us? "

Pru creates the mansion and directs everyone in the opening into the massive… barn. Oh, it’s a nice barn, but those who were expecting a luxurious mansion might be a bit surprised. Anna drops to the ground, then slides a bed in front of an open window where she can relax and soak up some sunlight. Travyin moves in, makes himself at home, thanks Pru, and tries to aid any Agents that are still injured. Many still feel very, very drained from the constitution damage. That was a very tough fight. Michael wanders around the house and relaxes while trying to recover a bit. He cleans up and ponders strategy for when the group faces the lich again. Nikolai also considers strategy and relaxes a little. Pompous moves in and wonders if they can get more troops from the citadel.
OOC: As a side note, the mansion will last 30 or so hours, so you have plenty of time.

Pru settles into her room, and makes sure everyone else is comfortable. She makes a mental note to make Anna's room with a sunlight, rather than a twilight, view if she is ever called upon to cast the mansion again.
She goes to find Trayvin. "You had asked about injuries. I'm still...weakened by that fog stuff." [OOC: Pru has taken 4 Con damage, one of which will heal overnight.]
She joins the strategy session. "I wasn't able to take a lot of direct action," she says. "I spent a lot of time blipping people back and forth past that stupid wall. And then I had to blast a hole in the roof so we didn't all die. Or, well, so I didn't die."

Yes he probably has a ring just like the one we found. Despite my size an expert wrestler like Nikolai should be able to take me down, but with this ring on he should slide off of me like water off of oiled metal. The other stuff, Stoneskin, his natural damage reduction, none of that matters in the light of Gargul's power. A smite bestowed by Gargul will pierce any of that and allow you to freely damage him." Sigvar has taken 5 con damage. He is able to heal his own con damage after resting. Rest and rstoring of the con damage will heal his wounds.

Anna says, "When I activate my iron body Morphamancy I am immune to sleep for a little over 10 minutes. I didn't think to activate it before I approached him to fool him into thinking I was a summon because I didn't know about it. I think I might need to sleep tonight to get over that fog after all."

"All good stuff. Glad we can sit back and analyze the battle. We need to have that wind again to knock out that green fog well before it does us any harm again. But tomorrow, we search the grounds all around. We need a way to determine where the Evil is centered. If he's not in the castle anymore, there may be a spot that radiates more evil than the castle. It's either that or turn over every stone and pebble looking for a hidden cave or something."
