DM Dan - On the waves again...
Monday February 24th, 2020 4:49:10 PM

The boat continues, and the crew seem to be working a bit harder after the mock scolding given to them. The ship moves swiftly, cutting through the ocean water and moving at a good speed. After the sun reaches it's zenith and it begins to come back down, but while the day is still at it's warmest, you see the crew all whispering to one another and chatting, glancing over at the petals. After about half an hour of this a couple of them go up to Ramsay and speak in hushed whispers to him. He looks uncertain and frowns before sighing and coming over to the Petals, specifically speaking to Kiwina.

"Cap'n... the men were wondering if you wouldn't mind dropping anchor so we can all go for a swim and enjoy the water, I said I'd ask you. What do you say?"

Kiwina checks the area as best he can for dangers, including creatures and currents, spending a few minutes and talking with the others about what they notice, too. (If they're able to take 20, then the group should have the perception, knowledge of nature, and other skills to make sure its safe.)

But he's an avid swimmer himself. Unless they notice something troubling, of course it's ok.

Tuesday February 25th, 2020 6:47:35 PM

You all take a leisurely dip in the cool waters, helping refresh you after the heat of the sun beats down on you. The deckhands and other crew dive in and jump off the ship, challenging each other to go higher and higher and jump from higher and higher points, it getting ever more dangerous. Eventually they stop as the next challenge would require jumping from almost the centre of the boat, and no one is willing to attempt it.

One of the deckhands challenges the Petals. The jump is technically possible, but it'd be quite difficult...

DM Dan - On the waves again...
Thursday February 27th, 2020 5:33:10 AM

As Rolth begins to climb the ship, heading to the crows nest, the highest point, several of the deckhands and crew are speaking in quiet whispers and clearly betting on whether he'll make the jump or not. They don't speak loudly but it's obvious what they're doing and once Rolth reaches the highest point, they fall deathly silent.

Rolth stands on the edge of the crows nest, feeling the magic of his spell flowing through him, and coils up his muscles tightly, before exploding forward and launching himself far from the boat, he soars through the sky for a few moments before falling down to the waters, having cleared not only the boat, but the group of swimmers as well, and he lands in the water with a triumphant splash.

The deckhands and crewmen go wild, cheering and laughing and being just generally very impressed, and morale is clearly raised, even Ramsay seems remarkably stunned by the jump.

Mak, who had been in the crows nest at the time, could only gape at the four legged creatures accomplishment. Surely it was the lion like musculature of Rolth that allowed for such a feat. That Rolth had used magic to accomplish it never entered the lame soldiers mind as he too was encouraged by the taurs athleticism.

"That was impressively done my friend, I only wish I had bet on you!"

The crew gets back on deck, allowing the sun to dry them off, and after a little while they begin preparing the ship to depart again, and after a short time it's underway, as the ship cuts through the water again, causing spray to splash up along the sides launching itself at a good speed.

Saturday February 29th, 2020 8:51:36 PM

Rolth sums up what we know so far.

"The Duke’s female jester told us (while in the ‘dungeon’) “I have been sent by my lord to talk to you about who you will be looking to discuss things with. The Sandifurrs is one Clan you need to talk with, another is the Longclaws, and finally the Goldmanes, but really you will need to take his sealed proposal to the Council of the Clans... only they together can make the decision, I would suggest mayhaps scoping the political position out and maybe getting close to the clans with the most power right?”

The Duke sent us to “treat with Council of Clans, the Liontaurs, as your recent... efforts will have endeared you to them somewhat.” He said “Honestly, I didn't want to imprison you, but had to keep the Minotaur's happy, you understand it's politics. However, your little stunt made it so the Liontaurs are fans of yours, I want you to use that. You will make fine emissaries, I have no doubt, and I have great faith in you. I assume my jester has spoken to you?"

The Duke’s chief counselor told us “"Well Rolth, the three clans that have been mentioned would be a good start yes. They are the three we feel have the most power to wield and will be receptive to our requests to establish a Minotaur Settlement on Liontaur Isle. Unfortunately I don't know much about them, or how they make their decisions, you may have to see what you can find out once you get there. As far as I understand it there are an odd number of votes, so there cannot be ties. As for more agents, we are sending you. We have had minimal dealings with them in the past, and no Mr Ambersier, you don't have to wear that hat."

In our earlier sojourn in Chesswell, we noted that the Sandifurr Mercantile is the biggest building in sight, a big wood and stone building with two sets of double doors. Of course, every building here, built as they are for people weighing 500 pounds or more, is big, but this one is bigger. Okay, it is not the biggest shop in town, not by a long shot, and it is more run down than most, but at least you can be sure the clerks inside speak Common! Of course, the Sandifurr Clan are well known to me (Rolth), as I have been to this town before. I know the clan has a reputation for fair dealings, even if they are not the sharpest traders in town."

"So unless someone has a better starting place, perhaps we can start with the Sandifurr Merchantile, since we at least know where it is. It is possible that some of our previous contacts, perhaps at the Wanderers' Roost or Elarorn's family, will be able to provide some additional clues. Any of you fellows have other ideas?

Mak thought about Rolth's summation and groaned inwardly at the diplomatic acrobatics they'd be taking with the nobility on the isle.

"So, we shouldn't approach the Council with the sealed message until we've gotten a lay of the land then, approach allies in the region first? Like Coalborns Kiwina mentioned?" Mak asked the native of the isle.

As a noble himself, Mak had been forced to study the lineage and power of all the noble families in the known world, so he wasn't unfamiliar with the political structure of the island and the families involved. He did think to add.

"Instead of approaching any member of a noble house, maybe we should take a reading of the political environment from the bottom, among the people?" he suggested.

OOC: KS: Nobility, Roll 25: Are the Coalborns a good choice? What are the rivalries among the houses on the island so we know that when we approach one house representative we might be angering another?

DM Dan - On the waves again...
Monday March 2nd, 2020 6:48:41 PM

Mak - Highlight to display spoiler: {The Coalborns are not a family you've heard of, so they aren't a noble family. But that may mean they have their ears more to the ground and can point you in the right direction. You've heard of the other noble Families. There are the several clans on the Council, The Sandifurrs, a trading family who want to ensure that they can keep financial stability. The Longclaws, a Clan of warriors who concern themselves with Martial power and prowess. The Goldmane Clan, of leaders and courtiers who want to keep everything running smoothly, the Redtooth Clan, a clan of vicious fighters, known for the brutality who want to crush the Council's enemies underfoot, the Hound's Tooth clan, hunters and druid-types who live in balance with nature and don't want to disrupt that delicate balance, and the Stormeye Clan, mystics and druids, who want to give value to the land and the sea.}

You all sit and discuss things in the cabin, enjoying the calm surf as the ship continues onwards, and begin to discuss different strategies and methods you can use to gather information. Ramsay has joined you, to offer any help he may be able to, little as it may be.

"You could always get a 'view from the hoofs' so to speak, to see if there are any grassroots problems with how the council run things, but I'm not sure how much help that will actually be in getting the Council on side?"

He pauses.

"If you already have friends in Chessford, it would almost certainly be worth speaking to them about what's going on to see if they can give you any insider and up to date information."

However he does look to you to make a final plan on what exactly you want to do.

Assuming we don't get derailed, we could move on to getting some lodging at the Wanderers' Roost, and make some inquiries there as to the state of things. At that point, maybe we'll have some clues about where to go next, or can pad over to the Sandifurrs' shoppe to nose around a bit."

While we're in port are you likely to rekindle that friendship?" Kiwina has no expectation that Amaretto could do anything for the Petals except maybe pass on gossip, and of course let them dine at the Wanderer's Roost, but he remembers how happy Ramsey was around her.

Thinking of the Wanderer's Roost brings one troubling thing to mind, though. These liontaurs are partial to raw, red meat, the thought of which turns Kiwina's stomach. He foresees any state dinners being uncomfortable affairs.

"The Duke assigned this task to us very publically," Kiwina points out. "What we're about won't be secret for long." He thinks that a bold approach might be best. Say, a diplomat or two could request a meeting with the Council of Clans within hours of landing while the others start the process of gathering information. It should take a few days for the council to convene unless other business has already prompted them to do so. During that time the group could get the lay of the political landscape.

"A good point... I wouldn't be surprised if the Council is expecting some sort of envoy from the Duke, as an overture of diplomacy. They may not expect yourselves, but some delegation would probably be being prepared for as we speak. I would agree... spending a couple of days getting the lay of the land, so to speak, cannot be a bad thing. It will help inform your decisions and when you can push things and when you'll have to rein in."

He smiles.

"But what do I know? I'm but a simple sailor. It looks like we should have fair winds and an easy journey for the rest of the day, if you want to do any more planning, assigning tasks and the like, I suggest you do it before hunkering down for the night."

Ramsay looks thoughtful about Mak's suggestion.

Kiwina was under the impression that during the relatively recent Centaur-Minotaur wars, the liontaurs were neutral, and made money off of both sides. There was some sort of trade to be had then; surely there is still trade to be had now.

Kiwina had also thought that Elyas, Angus, and Mak were to be one group. Well, maybe not. But Angus and Mak joined the party since it last left Liontaur Island, and the others attended a very public trial here. Assuming that Minotaur isle, is say half the size of the UK, it has a perimeter of about 7,000 nautical miles, again assuming you're a bit out to see and rounding a few times. This means that to get a quarter of the way round would take approximately 43 days at the speed your going. As a team... with fluid motions and movements you begin to batten down the hatches and prepare for the storm, the deckhands and other crewmen are running back and forth under Ramsay's watchful eye they move things below decks, some of you helping with the moving some of you guiding.

By the time the storm has come upon you everything that should be secured, is. The cold wind and rain lashes against you and the bitter waves seem intent on getting on deck. The water is like daggers of ice that don't care what sort of armour your wearing, and while you are well prepared the storm is relatively bad.

((OoC: Anyone who is on deck, please make a Fortitude saving throw, DC 14, failure indicates a -2 penalty to any other checks during the storm.))

As the wind whips and the rain pounds it is almost musical in the sounds it makes. The crewmen are all trying to keep everything together, but some of them have their hands shaking from the cold making it harder and harder for them to continue their work, some of you are affected in the same way, shivering and trying to keep as warm as possible.

Elyas heads up to the crow's nest but cannot really see anything. The rest of you move about the ship, trying to help the crewmen where possible, Ramsay has joined you and is encouraging the crewmen to keep it up, and trying to get them to keep working. You can tell the deckhands are beginning to get cold and wet and tired.

Tsak makes his way over to Elyas and Falco and asks if they can detect anything magical about the storm. He feels it is unusual to get so cold after being so balmy only days ago. Also there was the episode with the magical undead pirates last time they were at sea.
If the two magicians do notice anything awry Tsak will carefully share it with Rolth and Kiwina, being sure not to upset the crew, sailors being the suspicious lot that they are.

Thus heartened, he breaks into an old sailing song about sailing into the teeth of the storm, surviving, and thriving.

Angus grabs onto the dolphin, but his grip slips, however coupled with the rope around his waist and his strong swimming he manages to keep near the boat.

Kiwina helps the rest of the crew slow the ship down enough that Angus and the crewman can catch up.

Falco breathes a sigh of relief that everything seems in hand.

Rolth continues his song to inspire people to do better.

Tsak prepares to help Angus and the crewmember back on board.

The crewmember and Angus reach the side of the ship and begin clambering up it and being helped over the side by Tsak, the fall exhausted in a heap on the deck, the rest of the crew swarming to ensure they're secured. After a few moments they are all safe and secure.

"We'll have to ride out this storm, we can either drop anchor here and ride it out without moving, but it'll use up some time, or we can continue to sail through it, which'll keep us on schedule, but may be dangerous, what do you think Petals?"

"Agreed. We'll batten everything down, then go below decks, we will have to leave a few crewmembers up here to keep an eye out for anything... unless some of yourselves want to volunteer?"

After asking and getting the answers, Ramsay, yourselves and all the crewmen begin locking everything down, strapping it in and securing it. Then, those not on watch go below decks to stay dry and fresh.

As the creatures get closer, you can see that they are harpies, and they're coming straight for the boat. A moment or two after this realisation, you hear Ramsay's voice call out loudly.

"FOG BANK INCOMING!!" And he points towards port, the opposite direction from the harpies, and you see what looks like an avalanche of fog, rolling towards the ship, almost moving as if it had a purpose, and was angry at you for some reason. Within just a few moments the ship is completely engulfed by the fog, reducing your visibility down to only about eighteen, maybe twenty feet. The harpies were heading straight for you, there were perhaps about ten of them, heading straight at the masts and the rigging.

((We're now in combat time, please let me know where your characters are, and where they might want to move to given the lack of vision, I'll then make up some sort of map for the combat, you have perhaps one round to prepare before the harpies arrive.))

You can barely see after the fog rolls in. Covering the ship in a thick grey soup, preventing you seeing much from far away. However you can hear it, the creatures are screeching and flying at the rigging on the ship. just loud enough and just close enough that you can make out their shapes, but cannot reach them with melee weapons, you'll either have to climb the rigging, (DC 0 climb check) or climb onto the rigging or the masts. If you want to attack them with a melee weapon you'll have to climb out onto the spars. (DC 5 acrobatics check)

[I'm not on the map yet, just put me next to Rolth for now.]

Elyas is a little surprised when the fog is not dispelled. perhaps it was just a coincidence that it hit at exactly the same minute as the harpies? or maybe they were waiting for the fog to roll in before attacking. watching their frenzied attacks, Elyas doubts that is the case.

seeing them flying among the rigging and sails, Elyas tries to catch a few of them with a giant web strung between the mast and some of the sails and rigging. (i can't edit the map yet and I'm not sure what the relative heights are for the harpies. aiming for whatever stretch i can hit that will catch a few harpies without trapping allies. 20ft radius spread)

Mak couldn't see a thing in this fog and even when Kiwina rimmed the harpies in faerie fire the light from that was so dispersed by the mist there was only a large glowing area. Mak closed his eyes and sighted by sound alone as he fired at the screeching sounds above.

Tsak fires, into the eighth harpy, causing it to screech back at him in pain. The ninth harpy suddenly becomes illuminated, unfortunately it is only the ninth one. Rolth's new countersong helps protect you from the previous singing harpies, and the two new ones that joined in this round. Elyas' magic does nothing to dispel the fog. Mak's attack connects with the ninth harpy, causing it to screech in pain and fall down dead ((as per the e-mail, it loses the benefit of the concealment from the fog while Farie Fire is active, meaning all your attacks hit and I rolled some pretty high damage for ya)), while Falco comfortable scrambles up the rigging.

Most of the harpies continue their relentless assault on the ship itself, trying to damage it so much that it won't go anywhere. However harpy number eight has moved over to attack Tsak, whom it strikes for 3 points of damage.

The Harpies that are singing are 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 in case anyone is interested.

The crewmen are desperately trying to raise the sails and drop anchor while the fog is going on, but it appears that by a stroke of misfortune, one of the harpies has managed to sever the rope to raise the mainsail, and there's no way to know which way the ship is heading now.

Rolth keeps climbing the mast, and readies another countersong in case more begin to sing. He remains prepared to exploit an opportunity attack if one of the harpies move's through his glaive's reach, with priority going to any whose singing we have not already successfully resisted.

He rocks in the rigging all day long
Hoppin' and a-boppin' and singing his song
All the little harpies on the yardarm
Hate to hear the Petals come to do them harm

((OOC - Sorry missed the web! My bad!))

Rolth is now two thirds of the way up the mast, and his counter song is is helping prevent the harpies songs, as the last three start singing.

Mak fires at H8, and you all ear the song stop for a brief moment as it becomes injured.

Kiwina's bag brings H6 crashing down onto the deck as it becomes all wrapped up

Elyas' web has trapped H10 and H4 as they move forward to attack Rolth as he climbs up the rigging. his lightening bolt fairs well and only one of the three harpies manages to avoid the majority of the damage.

Falco fires shots, having been resistant to the Singing thanks to Rolth's Countersong!

The harpies move forward to attack Rolth on the mast, they scratch at him with their talons and slam into him with their claws and body slam him some. He takes a total of 17 points of damage, thankfully, now the harpies are caught in the web and have to free themselves.

The other harpies continue to attack the rigging, it seems to be pretty damaged at this point. You'll have to do something fast, otherwise this might take days to repair!

Why did you try to disable our sails? What were your further orders? Tell us or you die here and now!" He also readies his countersong in case the evil thing tries to sing again.

While some of you try to reason with the creature, others attack it, however the Harpy ignores all your please and screeches at Rolth unleashing a flurry of different strikes against him giving no quarter and doing 13 points of damage to him, it keeps howling and screaming, it doesn't even appear to be moving normally but in erratic, jerky ways.

Is this type of attack normal for these creatures, maybe someone or something directed them to attack the ship?

Between Kiwina, Rolth and Tsak, they manage to fell the final harpy

You defeat the final harpy, and it dies with a horrid screech as it's death rattle. Ramsay looks up at the sails and rigging and lets out a sigh.

"They've done substantial damage to it... I've never known harpies to be so aggressive or attack a ship's rigging so aggressively..." Ramsay sends a couple of crewmen to take a closer look. There are the bodies of three of the harpies on the deck, after a few minutes Ramsay speaks up again.

"Well it looks like they really damaged all the rigging and sails, it'll take us some time to repair. A day or so, less if you guys can help too."

"We ought to search the bodies for clues and loot, and examine them to see whether there was something off about them, since they don’t normally act this way. It’s like someone is trying to sabotage our diplomatic mission. Speaking of which, what direction did they come from? Maybe that is a clue too."

Elyas looks over the damage to the ship.

They seemed very set on disabling our ship, and didn't start attacking us until we fought them. why would they do that?

Elyas will do what he can to help get the ship fixed as quickly as possible.
profession sailor = 16 to determine what needs to be done.

he will then use Mending where needed to quickly get the sails repaired, working on a small section at a time, but steadily making progress across the various rends and tears.

Although Kiwina would love to work on the problem of where the harpies came from, his firsf priority is the ship. And unless the fog burned off as suddenly as it came, he'd rather be still for the moment than sailing through it. He helps set the ship and starts inspecting the damage.

"Mak, can you see or hear trouble from up there, if any more comes on us?"

As he sets about his tasks, he appears preoccupied with the recent attack.

OOC: unless visibility improves.

Mak called back to Kiwina, “Thick as pea soup here captain. I’ll make for the aft castle and see if the view is any better.

Seeing what was in front of him wasn’t a problem, so Mak moved up the steps into the aft deck and took a position at the stern rail to listen for anything that might aid them or warn them of danger.
