DM Dan - On the waves again...
Monday March 23rd, 2020 7:23:26 PM

Between Falco and Angus, they manage to pull Falco back on board, just leaving the other crewmember overboard.

Kiwina is still preparing his spell, Rolth is still trying to ensure everyone is competent while Falco ties himself off and goes to help Kiwina.

Elyas goes to ensure Falco is brought back on board safely.

As Falco and Angus crash to the deck together in a heap the ship lists the other way, but with Elyas' help, both Falco and Angus make it to their feet. You can see the crewmember who has already been thrown overboard slowly slipping further away, he will be out of sight shortly. (he is perhaps 20 feet of the stern as it stands, and the ship isn't moving too fast with all this storm, but it is still moving.) You can see him wave at you as he treads water, desperately trying to keep his head above the waterline.

Ramsay and some of the other crewmembers are tying themselves off on deck as well to try and help support you wherever possible, they are just awaiting instructions.

Angus grabs a rope and after quickly checking that one end is securely fastened, he dives in with the other end to swim to the sailor who's overboard.

Kiwina ties off the rope he pulled out last round.

Meanwhile, the spirits attract the attention of a dolphin, which appears in the water beside the sailor.

Since I have no way to talk to it and there are no enemies for it to attack, I'm hoping it will hang out for the two rounds and that the sailor has the presence of mind not to use it but do so gently. Rolth summons a big kettle drum with a tight skin, ties it off to Kiwina's rope and hurls it as far towards the sailor in the water as possible.

He will suggest to Kiwina and the crew that we slow the ship as much as possible while keeping enough headway to stay pointed into the waves.

Elyas sees the man slipping further and further away. he knows from experience as a sailor that this is very bad for the crewmember and that the window for saving him will close quickly. he has a sudden idea that he has never tried before using a new spell. he tries to go through the motions of casting this new spell while being tossed around on the rolling deck (DC = 15 + spell level = 18)
first attempt = 16. hero point reroll = 23, success! 1 hero point remaining now

Suddenly to the others' view it looks like Elyas has also been swept overboard!

but then his head reappears above the railing of the ship. he's flying! he flies over to the struggling sailor and holds out a hand, grabbing the man.

Tied off and not sure how to help Falco looks for a light rope that he could tie off to an arrow. His bow might be strong enough to get a rope out further then a throw. He is certainly not going to swim.

Angus dives in after the cremember, while Kiwina summons a dolphin to help the man Tsak waits until the man is nearby to help haul him back on board. Rolth throws over a sort of makeshift flotation device over to the man, while Elyas begins to fly over to him. Falco attempts to find a lighter rope, and does so quickly and easily.

The man first of all grabs onto the dolphin, which keeps him afloat as Angus makes his way over to him. They both grab onto the dolphin as the rope from Rolth lands about half way between the ship and the crewmember. Ramsay and the rest of the crew begin to slow the ship down, but with the storm and the rain it is proving a bit tougher than normal.

The ship, still moving slowly forward begins pulling Angus along with it, ((Please make a Strength Check Angus to hold onto the dolphin and/or the sailor, you can choose to grab one or both. Grabbing both would be harder, grabbing the crewmember will help him and bring him along, grabbing the dolphin will keep you afloat))

DM Dan - On the waves again...
Thursday March 26th, 2020 4:16:19 AM

Angus grabs onto the dolphin, but his grip slips, however coupled with the rope around his waist and his strong swimming he manages to keep near the boat.

Kiwina helps the rest of the crew slow the ship down enough that Angus and the crewman can catch up.

Falco breathes a sigh of relief that everything seems in hand.

Rolth continues his song to inspire people to do better.

Tsak prepares to help Angus and the crewmember back on board.

The crewmember and Angus reach the side of the ship and begin clambering up it and being helped over the side by Tsak, the fall exhausted in a heap on the deck, the rest of the crew swarming to ensure they're secured. After a few moments they are all safe and secure.

"We'll have to ride out this storm, we can either drop anchor here and ride it out without moving, but it'll use up some time, or we can continue to sail through it, which'll keep us on schedule, but may be dangerous, what do you think Petals?"

Ramsay nods.

"Agreed. We'll batten everything down, then go below decks, we will have to leave a few crewmembers up here to keep an eye out for anything... unless some of yourselves want to volunteer?"

After asking and getting the answers, Ramsay, yourselves and all the crewmen begin locking everything down, strapping it in and securing it. Then, those not on watch go below decks to stay dry and fresh.

"I think we should make a break for it... even some respite would be good."

The crew all start working hard to move the ship towards the break in the storm, the ship moves along at a good speed and you quickly make it out of the storm, allowing full bright sunlight back onto the ship, and you see you have escaped the large storm handily.

As the sun goes down Ramsay calls you all together.

"We have a choice to make, tomorrow we'll be going past some reefs. We can try to sail through, it'll be harder, but also a lot quicker. Or, we can go the long way round, which will avoid the reefs but perhaps add a day or two onto our travel. You guys are in charge, so tell me what you think."

As the creatures get closer, you can see that they are harpies, and they're coming straight for the boat. A moment or two after this realisation, you hear Ramsay's voice call out loudly.

"FOG BANK INCOMING!!" And he points towards port, the opposite direction from the harpies, and you see what looks like an avalanche of fog, rolling towards the ship, almost moving as if it had a purpose, and was angry at you for some reason. Within just a few moments the ship is completely engulfed by the fog, reducing your visibility down to only about eighteen, maybe twenty feet. The harpies were heading straight for you, there were perhaps about ten of them, heading straight at the masts and the rigging.

((We're now in combat time, please let me know where your characters are, and where they might want to move to given the lack of vision, I'll then make up some sort of map for the combat, you have perhaps one round to prepare before the harpies arrive.))

Tsak is in the Crows Nest with Angus. Seeing Angus take out his bow Tsak does the same and readies a bolt.

Kiwina is on deck, outfitted for sailing, not combat. He concentrates a moment, and the rod that was in his quarters appears in his hand. As he grasps it, the rod grows into a long spear.

Maybe, he hopes, they just want to talk.

If one appears to be attacking him, he will attempt to hit it anyway (AOO with longspear, 10' reach, to hit = 18, damage = 8).

remembering the fog that was involved last time in the fight in the goblin caves against the so-called Ghost, Elyas attempts to remove the fog, trying a dispel magic spell on it before even taking the time to determine if it is magical. he assumes it might be magic based on how quickly and directly it overcame the ship.

You can barely see after the fog rolls in. Covering the ship in a thick grey soup, preventing you seeing much from far away. However you can hear it, the creatures are screeching and flying at the rigging on the ship. just loud enough and just close enough that you can make out their shapes, but cannot reach them with melee weapons, you'll either have to climb the rigging, (DC 0 climb check) or climb onto the rigging or the masts. If you want to attack them with a melee weapon you'll have to climb out onto the spars. (DC 5 acrobatics check)

Falco - Highlight to display spoiler: {The fog is not magical.}

Both Falco and Mak let loose their shots, and you hear the squawk and screech and a splash as something falls into the water, however those seemed to be lucky shots, even Falco and Mak will need to climb up to get more clear shots.

Map

((There is the layout, I'm not sure if it's editable or not, but if not just tell me where you move and I'll move you as needed))

As they approach, four of the harpies begin singing, thankfully, Rolth's countersong immediately manages to prevent you all falling for it.

The harpies are swarming the rigging, slashing and scratching at it and the sails with their talons, causing rents and cuts all across it. They're frenzied like piranha swarming over some meat, ripping and tearing in crazed attacks.

[I'm not on the map yet, just put me next to Rolth for now.]

Elyas is a little surprised when the fog is not dispelled. perhaps it was just a coincidence that it hit at exactly the same minute as the harpies? or maybe they were waiting for the fog to roll in before attacking. watching their frenzied attacks, Elyas doubts that is the case.

seeing them flying among the rigging and sails, Elyas tries to catch a few of them with a giant web strung between the mast and some of the sails and rigging. (i can't edit the map yet and I'm not sure what the relative heights are for the harpies. aiming for whatever stretch i can hit that will catch a few harpies without trapping allies. 20ft radius spread)

Tsak fires, into the eighth harpy, causing it to screech back at him in pain. The ninth harpy suddenly becomes illuminated, unfortunately it is only the ninth one. Rolth's new countersong helps protect you from the previous singing harpies, and the two new ones that joined in this round. Elyas' magic does nothing to dispel the fog. Mak's attack connects with the ninth harpy, causing it to screech in pain and fall down dead ((as per the e-mail, it loses the benefit of the concealment from the fog while Farie Fire is active, meaning all your attacks hit and I rolled some pretty high damage for ya)), while Falco comfortable scrambles up the rigging.

Most of the harpies continue their relentless assault on the ship itself, trying to damage it so much that it won't go anywhere. However harpy number eight has moved over to attack Tsak, whom it strikes for 3 points of damage.

The Harpies that are singing are 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 in case anyone is interested.

The crewmen are desperately trying to raise the sails and drop anchor while the fog is going on, but it appears that by a stroke of misfortune, one of the harpies has managed to sever the rope to raise the mainsail, and there's no way to know which way the ship is heading now.

((OOC - Sorry missed the web! My bad!))

Rolth is now two thirds of the way up the mast, and his counter song is is helping prevent the harpies songs, as the last three start singing.

Mak fires at H8, and you all ear the song stop for a brief moment as it becomes injured.

Kiwina's bag brings H6 crashing down onto the deck as it becomes all wrapped up

Elyas' web has trapped H10 and H4 as they move forward to attack Rolth as he climbs up the rigging. his lightening bolt fairs well and only one of the three harpies manages to avoid the majority of the damage.

Falco fires shots, having been resistant to the Singing thanks to Rolth's Countersong!

The harpies move forward to attack Rolth on the mast, they scratch at him with their talons and slam into him with their claws and body slam him some. He takes a total of 17 points of damage, thankfully, now the harpies are caught in the web and have to free themselves.

The other harpies continue to attack the rigging, it seems to be pretty damaged at this point. You'll have to do something fast, otherwise this might take days to repair!

Kiwina's slingshots severely injure H7 while Falco finishes it off, at the same time Elyas kills H1 and Rolth manages to fail to connect with most of his attacks, however his bite attack does hit H4.

The remaining three harpies are whipped into a frenzy, however H6 does not escape from the adhesive of the tanglefoot bag while the other two attack Kiwina, slamming their bodies into him and do a total of 11 points of damage.

Mak rested his back against the aft castle of the ship and listened as best he could. He thought he'd hit a few times, but he'd already shot quite a few arrows into impenetrable fog. He waited for a screech and targeted that sound and let three arrows fly in rapid succession. Even though Mak didn't know if he'd hit or not, the three arrows rocketed through the rigging and landed in the water hundreds of feet away. He'd missed with all three shots.

((Rolth will need to come down from the mast to get to H4 and H10, as they are on deck with Kiwina, I'm going to assume he climbs halfway down this turn and can make it down next turn))

Between all of the actions you take, you manage to fell both H10 and H4, as they had already been injured. H6 finally breaks free of the tanglefoot bag and lets out a howl, thankfully it does not begin to sing. It just screeches from the edge of the boat at all who come near.

Between Kiwina, Rolth and Tsak, they manage to fell the final harpy

You defeat the final harpy, and it dies with a horrid screech as it's death rattle. Ramsay looks up at the sails and rigging and lets out a sigh.

"They've done substantial damage to it... I've never known harpies to be so aggressive or attack a ship's rigging so aggressively..." Ramsay sends a couple of crewmen to take a closer look. There are the bodies of three of the harpies on the deck, after a few minutes Ramsay speaks up again.

"Well it looks like they really damaged all the rigging and sails, it'll take us some time to repair. A day or so, less if you guys can help too."
