While Armand wraps things up with the Sage's Guild, Neshi take the time to get some things done as well. Both the dean and Chancellor praise Armand for his efforts to start a library at the Tree, and tell him that they will be in contact with the Tree's management in the near future, claiming that they always wish to gain permission from the PTB before proceeding, as having a Sage's Guild Branch Library in a community brings in a lot of extra traffic, and some town management just aren't OK with that. They tell Armand that they can certainly send word to Lord Whatnot, but warn that it may take some time to get a return message, what with the Shadow Mountain being so far away.

Armand picks up some books and then he and Neshi teleport home, just in time to see Atlas teaching Elyngael, Owen, and Simon how to play go fish. and farkel. Vamir reaches out to 'Osul in an attempt to get to know the Druid better. He goes out to search for herbs and finds an abundance, which pleases him greatly. Atlas and 'Osul go out to check on the sapling, which isn't really a very good description for it anymore, as it is now a 40ft tall tree with a lovely canopy. the guards on duty seem extremely board, as to them they are watching a plant grow. They claim that their only form of entertainment is taking bets on whether they will witness any growth spurts today. They explain themselves by saying that on some days you can actually see it grow, and claim that on those days you cans hear faint sounds coming from the Tree's Offspring, though they do admit the sounds, which they describe as voice like, could be nothing but a trick of the wind in the branches.

After some much needed down time, the Wardens are ready to track down Francisco.

OOC... If a few of you could cast some divination spells in your post (Scrying, ECT...) that would be great, as like I said before, when I asked you to hold off, they would be the catalyst for this new module. Also I'm not sure what's happening with Tanner/Rattlebones. I know he sent out an e-mail saying he took a new job and was going to be busy for a short period of time. I believe he asked for a sub, but no one responded, however he wasn't mentioned in the last Sheriff's report so I'm guessing they moved him to temporary inactive statues like Zach/Finnan.

OOC: I know people discussed Scrying and such, but I neglected to add Greater Scrying to 'Osul's spells for the day. Happy for the DM to make the call. It might not be neccesary for 'Osul to do this.
Also, there was a long delay between my writing yesterdays post and actually submitting it, so he was happy spending time with Vamir. As far as dice and cards go, the only such game he knows from the farm is Beetle.

OOC- Is the page displaying differently for anyone? The fonts are different for me on Tree than any other Woldian page.[i/]

[i]MORE OOC - Unfortunately I think Rattlebones was the one wanting to do the scrying. There's a great 8th level spell for clerics, discern location, however I can't cast that high. Armand could prepare Greater Scrying if the DM approves him having prepped that for the day. However, Armand doesn't have a 1000gp silver mirror.

When they return Armand will go to James. "James how are you doing? I picked up some more books to add to the library." Armand will show James the books. "There may be the possibility that the Sage's Guild could come to town some day. Until then we are the only means of providing reading to the people of the Tree. You've been doing a fine job of finding books and keeping up the headquarters. How are the funds holding out? Do you need more money to upkeep things?"

Armand will try to get a meeting put together in the HQ's meeting room. "Unfortunately the Sage's Guild could not provide us more information on Fransisco. He may have worked for Lord Whatnot over near the Shadow Mountains. I've had a letter sent to him to see what information he could provide but that may take some time. Does anyone have some means to scry him? I know we have his journal and I believe Rattlebones or Vamir may have collected some of his remains from after the fight."

After a few moments, "I could cast a scrying spell, it would be a simply matter to pray for it during my morning rituals. But I don't have the required spell component to actually do the spell. Unless there's a 1000gp silver mirror lying around."

Vamir spends the day relaxing, talking with the Tree and Sapling. As the day draws past sunset Vamir looks over to the others, "I have something better than a mirror. I have Zaita!" The witch carefully removes his cauldron from his belt and spins her to full size. "Zaita, are you ready? Osul will you fill her with water and I will be glad to gather whatever objects we have that connect to Francisco to help track him down!" Armand, I would gladly take any advice before beginning this spell. While I have cast Scrying before this enhanced version is my first. Vamir lays the various items, books, dust, and other items nearby to use in conjunction with the spell. The young elf takes a deep breath and begins casting Greater Scrying. (Will DC 23 SR 34)

OOC... In down times, I'm not overly concerned with the accuracy of your prepared spell lists, so if Armand and 'Osul claim they have Scrying or Greater Scrying available, that's good enough for me. However, once an adventure begins, than It becomes important to be more strict for obvious reasons.

James eyes light up when Armand shows him the new books, and an even larger smile crosses his face when he mentions the Sage's Guild coming to the Tree. James assures that his budget is well in hand, and the need for more funds isn't needed, though he thanks Armand for the concern. Armand relates what he learned at the Sage's Guild to his comrades.

Owen wonders about the name Lord Whatnot, such an odd name can't be real, can it? But then as he ponders for a moment he recalls that Lord Whatnot is a real person. He built his stronghold on the western slope of the Shadow Mountain. He also remembers that Lord Whatnot has a unique dungeon he calls the Hall of Champions, which he has filled with all sorts of monsters, and any adventuring party wishing to test their mettle is welcome to test their skills.

Elyngael waits patiently, for the scrying to begin, and Atlas is sawing logs in his chair, while Brawn and new lady friend get to know one another. Vamir speaks with the sapling who introduces himself. The sapling shares a name that takes about two minutes to say, then says but you can call me Strongbranch, son of Deeproot, or just Strongbranch. Strongbranch tells Vamir that he feels a bit restless, and may go on a journey in the near future. He tells him that he would like to see his ancestral home, The Culverwood. He also says that he would like to be able to meet his sibling one day, but his sibling is not but a seed still.

Armand and 'Osul prepare to cast some scrying spells, but realize they are missing a key ingredient, luckily both Owen and Vamir have them covered. They begin casting the spell, which takes a while, but when they are done, upon the surface of Owen's mirror, and Zaita, the Wardens see what appears to be the interior of a room with cut stone walls. in the room is a table and sitting on the table is a fist sized black gem, the black gem gives off an eerie glow that may as well be holding a sign saying, "I am evil". The Wardens know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are gazing on Francisco's Phylactery. in one corner of the room is a 10ftx10ft pillow resembling a dog pillow, only much larger obviously. Laying on the pillow keeping guard of the black gem is a 12ft t-rex wearing armor. Everyone but 'Osul, Vamir, Rattlebones and Finnan find something familiar about the room, and realize they have been there before. For this is the room that Wiz-Bang brewed the antidote for the Tree, and Otaktay brewed the poison. Francisco's Phylactery is in, what once was, Otaktay's Stronghold!

Neshi watches the scrying with fascination, as scrying has never been anything he was very good at or even really understood, even though he sees the benefits a good scrying can provide.

Viewing the results, Neshi sighs, "Well we certainly should be able to get there or at least close by rather easily." But that does seem to be quite a large guard dog, indicating the giant lizard. Probably hasn't been fed in a little while either."

Armand shakes his head. "I thought we burnt that place when we left it." He shakes his head again in disbelief. "I need a day to replace my scrying spell with something more effective. Also I think we're going to need to buy some more incense again. Those Mummy Lords may regenerate before we get there. I think if we can bury them all at the same time I only need to cast the spell combo once. Also I wonder if some of us may want to have an alternate weapon, one that may be more effective against undead. Oh and just a reminder to us spell casters, undead are usually immune to cold damage and mind affecting spells. So choose your spells with that in mind."

Among all the chatter, Atlas breaks out into a laugh. "An armored t-rex? This is almost as good as a dragon. I'm in! Granted, if it's awakened like 'Osul thought it could be, well, I'm still in, it's just not as exciting. I'm ready."

DM Jeremy Battle Map
Monday April 20th, 2020 5:16:16 AM

Everyone has different takes upon seeing the armored t-rex and Frank's Phylactery, Elyngael and Owen aren't to happy to be up against undead again, but for the record, as 'Osul can attest, the t-rex is very much alive, actuality everyone can tell by watching his chest breath in and out. What stands out to 'Osul as odd is the fact that this t-rex is only large sized, not much bigger in over all mass then Brawn, really, and as a Druid, who can summon them, or wild shape into one, 'Osul is well aware that tyrannosaurs rexes are normally a lot bigger, and of colossal size. Based on this analyses he is able to deduce that this must be an animal companion or a juvenile, and adding in the fact that it is wearing armor and apparently trained for combat, he concludes that this must be an animal companion, and if a companion, the Druid must be near by.

The sight of the t-rex creates different reactions from the various Wardens. Anywhere from, "Hey this guy can cause lots of ouch!" to "I can't wait to stick my sword into it!". The talk turns to spells needed for the up coming fight, with Owen offering to learn a spell to help Elyngeal, and Neshi recommending using stoneskin. Armand gives a reminder that mind effecting spells are useless against undead, and cold spells often don't work either. 'Osul wonders if this is a place of power within The Culverwood, but then remembers that he had made it to Otaktay's Stronghold in the past, but was called away just as his friends were about to enter it, to defeat the awakened chimp. He wonders if they would know whether or not they would know if they were being scryed on.

As the Wardens are gazing into Owen's mirror, and Zaita, suddenly the images go blank, and Owen recalls the last time he tried scrying into the Culverwood. He remembers watching the surviving awakened primates that had attacked the Tree escaping into the Culverwood, the very awakened primates that sent Atlas to visit Lord Gargul, and then the image going blank, and he realizes that the sentient forest just reacted to his and Vamir's scrying spells. One must wonder why the Culverwood is so apposed to allowing it's interior to be spied on and what other things it may find unacceptable.

Armand considers Elyngael's words. "I could lend you my magical adamantine hammer, or I could cast Holy Sword on your sword, it has to be cast on a melee weapon, and it's not limited to one I hold, just one I can touch when casting. Conversely Fransico may not have that many undead servants around. I'm betting he brought most of his army with him because there were so many undead, and creating them does take some time. So most of his defenders may be the druid's handiwork. In which case your gear should do nicely in taking out the underlings."

Armand pauses a bit to straighten his thoughts. "But I think we need to get on the journey sooner than later, because Fransisco has not yet regenerated. His zombie lords may not be regenerated, or they might be. Do we teleport as close as we can or start traveling the long way?"

As the images suddenly disappear, 'Osul comments, "Yes, no doubt the result of the same power that disorients those moving within The Wood. This might also make teleporting in interesting, though Transport via Plants should be more reliable. I can't move us all in one casting, so does anyone else have it? Trek or teleport to the border of The Wood, then trek or transport via plants to the vicinity of the stronghold."

Vamir shudders as the spell ends, "I don't have many spells that directly impact undead either. I can enchant weapons to do a bit more damage, and prevent negative damage. If we are in an area with plants I can gather some information. I am not useless, but I am limited. As for weapons, I don't really use them. I am more adept with a bow, and sickle but if I am in melee we are in trouble!" Vamir ponders for a few seconds, "I can brew some potions, and herbal infusions to help as well if you let me know what is needed."

Discussion continues. With the Culverwood, which 'Osul points out is the same power that makes travel through the forest interesting at times, ending the scrying spells, it is decided that teleportation into the forest may not be a good idea. 'Osul mention transport via plants may be safer, but of course this is the Culverwood we are talking about, and just because a tree appears stationary doesn't mean it really is. so it is decided that our heroes will teleport to the edge of the Culverwood and trek the rest of the way. Armand offers to help Elyngael out with some temporary weapon enchantment, as does Owen who makes an emergency trip to the catacombs for just that purpose. Vamir offers to throw together some potions and herbal infusions, which are always helpful, but wonders how much help he will be verses the undead, since he struggled last time. However, as Armand points out, one can assume that the Druid will be helping to fill the ranks, so fleshy enemies should be available to sink arrows into, and have minds that can be messed with. With all the encouragement, Elyngael feels a bit more at ease, and not for the first time, comments at how well their team works together, while Atlas is eager to finish the job.

The Wardens spend the rest of the day prepping for the days to come. They go to bed early, so as to get an early start in the morning. Waking just before sunrise, the Wardens sit down for a hearty breakfast, and then they gather together as they have so many times before, so that Owen and Neshi can cast their teleportation spells, and an instant later, they find themselves at the trail head Wiz-Bang showed them a year and a half ago. the trail while viable is a little overgrown, after a year and of half of disuse, slowing travel down for anyone who doesn't have the woodland stride ability, (Druids and Rangers) forcing them to treat the trail as difficult terrain.

The distance from the trails head to the stronghold, as those who have been there before can remember, is normally a two days march, but with the slower progress, caused by the difficult terrain, you guesstimate that, unless the trail opens up it will take you 4 days to reach the stronghold, assuming the Culverwood behaves itself.

The first day goes without incident, as our heroes reminisce over past experiences. Elyngael is reminded of Khan and she still misses the loyal cat, but is thankful for he new furry friend, Owen shares a war story, and is thankful for their Ranger and Druid friends, and Atlas is, well Atlas, and light hearted as ever. Osul predicts that it will be chilly for the next handful of days with highs only in the mid 50's (Fahrenheit), and with lows in the low 40's, not cold enough to freeze, but staying close to the fire at night sure feels nice. Even though the sun is shining now, he expects the skies to cloud over tomorrow morning, and gives a 50% chance of rain.

That night the Wardens are serenaded but the sounds of owls hooting, and coyotes howling off in the distance. During Atlas and Neshi's watch, a loud crash is heard as a large tree branch falls to the ground 20-30 feet away from camp. Other then that, the night went without incident, and as morning arrives, Osul's prediction of an overcast sky comes to fruition.

Atlas wakes up with a cringe as he thinks about the weather today, but he doesn't waste time. He quickly moves through his morning rituals and then prepares breakfast for anyone that wants it. Once on the move he takes his place and keeps his eyes and ears open while he talks to no one in particular, "Good thing we have that tent from way back when we traveled through the Red Hills to The Scab. It will come in handy tonight assuming we can remember which bag of holding it is in."

Armand is not happy to be back in the forest. "The problem is this forest keeps moving itself around." He then looks chagrined and says to the nearest tree. "No offense intended."

He tries to keep alert.

Vamir looks around the wood, a smile, and occasional frown crossing his face. "I didn't k ow you were in the army Owen. Then again I do not know much about most of the group. How long were you in and what do soldiers do, well what did you do?" Vamir continues to walk with Owen, "My second home was here in the wood, a small hut my second father built, and lived in until he passed. Gornin was a great Druid, and Greenmage until his passing. I miss him greatly everyday." Vamir enjoys the difficult terrain, and pushes himself just as Gornin pushed him when he was younger.

As they settle down for the night Vamir continues to enjoy the company with Owen, and the rest of the Wardens. Vamir sleeps his 2 hours, and wakes up to complete his rituals. As the day breaks Vamir assists in breaking down the camp, and as they start Vamir takes his time looking around for tracks, and land marks to help guide the group. Elyngael keeps thinking about the last battle in the forest. "Do any of you spell casters have a way to get us inside that fortress other than the front door? I mean teleportation is good and all but you said something about the Culverwood interfering in that. What about other spells like something to make the wall change into a door or something?"

Elyngael keeps a watchful eye out during the day, and night.
Daytime Perception favored terrain, (20+23=24) Nighttime Perception favored terrain (d20+23=24). What are the odds of two 1's with an adder of 23?

well I suppose we could announce ourselves and blow the wall to pieces but then I wouldn't have much left to fight the bad guys with.

Owen responds to Vamir's questions: "I lived in the Contested Kingdoms for many years. Eventually, I was conscripted and spent about six years as a warmage in one campaign or another. We spent a lot of time marching and guarding one place or another, and the rest of the time we spent being totally terrified of battle. I'll tell you, soldiering's not a life I miss, especially as a family man... Tell me more about Gornin, Vamir."

'Osul enjoys the ramble. Occasionally he spots something a little familiar, but not necesarily in context.

Now Elyngael has opened the topic of Khan, he speaks well of him.

From the vicinity of Armand's tree 'Osul adopts a dwaven shape in the undergrowth and slowly and deeply responds, None taken!".

When they stop at the end of day two (long since having returned to usual form), he asks, "What chance is there that we might run up against the kind of undead that cannot stand the light?".

He adds a wide assortment of nuts, fruit, berries and vegetables to accompany the evening meal.
