It's a Jungle Out There

DM Kathy
Thursday April 16th, 2020 1:33:09 PM

[Everybody take 13,000 XP for the first scene.]

Bliss changes into a cat and lets Mookie keep watch.

Kezzem says the kobolds need a new business plan, which is probably very true, considering they don't even know what a business plan is.

Succotash sings a little song about jungles while he and Murphy discuss the merits of an obstacle course. Pressi concludes that the ocelots have been a bad influence on both of them.

The day gets warmer and warmer as you make your way through the jungle. The bugs come out to feast, and you discover that the kobolds' ointment helps quite a bit. Around mid-afternoon, Mookie alerts you to something big moving through the jungle. It is dinosaurs! You catch a glimpse of the great, lumbering beasts (plant-eaters, fortunately) as they make their way northwards.

The afternoon wears on. Soon it will be time to make camp. The kobolds had said that their village was about a days' travel from the trading booth, but you got to the trading booth around noon, so you'll want to stop for the night, somewhere, and continue to the kobold village in the morning.

"That's too bad I can't have a monopoly on bad puns, Press. I would totally build a hotel on it too. Or at least on Park Place."

Later, he says, "This seems to be a fine place to rest for the night. I hope we don't get eaten by dinosaurs. They would get serious indigestion from eating Bliss with all that repellant."

"I'll take first watch," offers Kezzem.

Murphy definitely wants to catch more than a glimpse. He says, "Be back in a few minutes. Anyone who wants to come along, that's fine with me." He wildshapes into whatever jungle bird looks closest to what he can change into, and flies to reach the dinosaurs. He wants to see them up close, and see how they are formed, and their gait, and expressions, and interactions, if only for a few minutes. If it seems safe, he may land on the back of one, and travel for a hundred yards or so thus. If any pay him any mind, he gives a happy chirrup, and returns their gaze, tilting his head to the side. After a brief interlude, he flies back to the party. He reports what he saw - and, if anyone joined him in any guise, he listens to their reports, too.

When Kezzem finds a good place to camp, Murphy concurs, and helps to set up camp for all - including the typical security precautions / early warning system, but extending it into the canopy overhead. He recently added ten new bells to his inventory, so places those with due consideration. And some caltrops at places along the perimeter. He warns his friends of their placement, so they do not develop tender feet. He sketches a map, so that he might take care to collect everything once morning comes.

He ensures the animals are checked, fed, tended to. "Anyone for music - songs - poetry - stories tonight?" he asks as they settle in to eat. "I'll take last watch," he volunteers.

Bliss changes back and says that him and Mookie will take first watch.

That's the usual for travelling overland, so no surprise.

After his watch he changes into a cat and snuggles up to Mowa.

Also per usual.

"Uh, obstacle courses for children, Tali?" Murphy responds to the resident sorceress. "Ideas to train them? I sure am glad you often wake up when we get into combat. Tali, seriously, I know you theoretically can get by with two hours of sleep a night, but, might I recommend getting, oh, I don't know, six, or even eight? Just for a change. Tell you what. Try that tonight, then -- here, here is a pen, an ink bottle, and ten sheets of paper. If you have a dream, and can remember it when you wake up, then jot it down quickly. You can start 'Lady Tali's Book of Dreams, Recounted.' I'd read it! Maybe what's-his-name in Angel Springs might sell it in his shop. Borgo? My mind, Tali, my mind is eroding before my very eyes!"

Then he adds, "Oh, yeah. If you have a song or story you'd like to tell, well, on the road, or resting along the trail, is a good time for that, if you'd like to tell us a tale."

When it’s time to set up camp, he pitches in wherever needed, and even gets the fire started. After dinner he busts out Bonham his masterwork drum and busts out a funky drum beat. (Performance 14) He offers to take first watch.

Since Pressi hasn't used any spells today, she takes a middle watch. She makes the usual food rations, prepares the fire and helps to set up camp.

Some in the group decide to get a closer look at the dinosaurs. They are hard to miss! They are brachiosaurs, each about 80 feet long. They are indeed enough to give Valerie or Harper serious indigestion.

You camp that evening near a small stream. You keep watches, but the night is--well, not quiet. You're in a jungle. There are any number of cries and rustlings out there to keep you guessing. But nothing disturbs your rest, and in the morning you are able to renew and cast spells as usual.

Hobie hates the jungle. Even with the bug ointment and casting Endure Elements on himself daily, he just isn’t one for the jungles. He is more at home in open fields, where he can see dangers from far away and dispatch them before they are even a threat.

He keeps Prowler in hand always as they walk. He’s not used to the sounds of the jungle, and never knows what might be hiding in the brush. He follows his friends dutifully, but is quite eager to get to a village.

Later, Bliss talks privately with Murphy. "Wonderful, Tali! Yes, write poems. Little stories. I bet you'd be great with children. 'Miss Talia's Book of Adventures for Children' could be a popular book. Or, something else, for grown-ups. Or, the best kind - for all ages.

"Oh, Jungle Gym? That is Succotash's idea. We could build - yes, a climbing exercise structure, with knotted ropes, like climbing jungle vines, and bars, ladders, a slide, a tunnel...." The halfling rambles on fleshing out this idea.

"Heroes' Feast sounds scrumptious," enthuses Murphy at Bliss's first suggestion. He enjoys the meal with his friends, and the boost and added confidence it seems to give to him.

During their later conversation, he replies, "Uh, you mean, the awaken spell? Huh. I've used it for an oak tree - you know, Dderwen - you've met him - at the Sanctuary." [look at the upper left corner of the map for where Dderwen stands, near the northwest wall] "I could ask her. Might give her quite a bit better chance at survival. A question, however - do we want to awaken a lion that tends to be so crabby? Although, she does seem to be relaxing somewhat." He brings Pressi into the conversation to get her take on the matter. He feels somewhat more comfortable with the notion of using it for the ocelot siblings. If his beloved thinks it an acceptable pursuit, he'll talk it over with Mowa, explaining as carefully as he might what it can do for her. Among other things the druid tells her, "There is no assurance of happiness as a result of the change. But it will open your understanding in many ways." If she is willing, it does take a full day to cast, so they will need to plan for when to do it.

"Hobie - does this place, the selva, put you ill at ease?" he asks the archer mage as they wend their way toward Sskthk.

In the morning, Bliss prepares a Heroes Feast. The feast gives everyone multiple benefits, and your DM will state quite frankly that she has a hard time remembering all of them. It would be to your advantage to familiarize yourselves with them.

For example, everyone needs to roll temporary hit points.

After breakfast, Murphy talks to Mowa, who is a normal, non-dire lion. She has a hard time understanding what you're asking about, and has become suspicious of people while in captivity. It's not a hard no, but you'll need to do some more persuading if you're keen on this project.

Then you all set off through the jungle once again, somewhat to Hobie's discomfort.

You are passing through a particularly dense patch of jungle, when you suddenly begin to feel lightheaded. Everyone (animals included) needs to succeed at at DC 24 Will save or become captivated. Captivated creatures can take no actions except move off the path and head eastward.

Pressi performs her own rituals: Warding and Spiritual Healing (unless Bliss is also sharing shield of faith with them) with Harper assist. From Heroes Feast, she gets 14 HP.

Will Save Pressi 29.
Will Save Harper 14 (captivated)

As his animals and Bliss all turn the same direction, and Hobie apologizes to Bliss for shooting him in the back with an arrow - he knows that his bow is designed to subdue with non-lethal damage, he acts. It affects all within a 40' diameter - the druid targets it to get as many of his halfling friends as possible, then the animals.

Immediately after casting the spell he decides to examine the larger picture. He wild shapes into a huge air elemental, and ascends up then over the area that seems to be drawing his friends.

She then reaches into her front pocket and removes one of her newest additions...a nice pair of goggles. She places the goggles over her eyes and tries to perceive what is happening to the Humbles! (Skill Check: Perception = 20 ) Tali sees nothing unusual with the exception that in this Jungle, to Tali, everything is unusual!

"Humbles! There is a weird plant that the others are meandering towards. This doesn't look good! Any idea how far out that plant is?! Also, since it's mesmerizing our brethren, it might be a trap! Be on guard for other dangers lurking nearby. Where's Mowa? Does she detect anything other than that plant?!" shouts Tali to her closest Humbles teammates.

OOC to DM: Highlight to display spoiler: { Please describe the jungle surroundings, how high the canopy is and where the humbles could fly freely. Also, the time of day, and how far away I can see out with darkvision (The goggles are Goggles of the night) and what the map's scale is, please. }

All in the halfling tongue, huge air elemental Murphy says, "There is a viper vine there - use cold against it, no acid, but yes ranged weapons. It can reach out 20 feet, and likes to strangle, but it moves slowly. Over that other way is a gargantuan cat - looks like a frumious Bandersnatch - one tough critter, and fast.

Murphy cast wall of thorns, 10' deep, 20' high, and 75' long, to slow down his friends from reaching the viper vine. And slow down the viper vine from getting to them. And perhaps place a small obstacle in the way of the Bandersnatch. Although, bander snatches generally do what they will. I know, sorry, it may interfere with the ranged attacks that Murphy recommended - the Bandersnatch, with its gargantuan size, may yet show itself an available target, even over the 20' tall hedge of thorns.

Succotash see's the ginormous cat thing in the underbrush, but until Murphy identifies it he is clueless as to what it is. He also sees his friends heading to the plant monster that again he isn't able to identify. He does however realize that the plant thing is what is causing his friends to walk into harms way, and he is having none of that, so he will begin summoning an augmented purple worm, having it arrive within striking distance of the Viper Vine next round.

First, some logistical things. I'm leaving Mowa the lioness out of this combat to make it less complicated. [I believe Harper is a noncombatant as well? I know Mookie and Valerie are fair game; I'm not sure about Rumpus, but since Kezzem can send him away at any point, I'm not worried about it.] The map is 5-foot squares. The foliage is thick here, but not so thick as to impede movement. The canopy is about 50 feet overhead. You can get above it, of course, but then you really can't see what's happening on the jungle floor. It is mid-morning.

Mookie tries to snap Bliss out of his captivation, to no avail. However, as Bliss and the other captivated creatures approach the Wall of Thorns, each gets a new save before moving into dangerous terrain.

Also, the rest of the party--the ones who are not captivated--need to make a new Will save, DC 24, or become captivated (the effect will linger for several rounds).

Tali gains some altitude and puts on her new goggles.

Kezzem wonders aloud if he should start stabbing. Murphy calls out that the plant is a viper vine, and that there is also a frumious bandersnatch stalking the party!

Succotash begins summoning, and Pressi casts a Break Enchantment. Unfortunately, the captivating effect is not magical, and therefore not an enchantment. Murphy can tell you that the effect is caused by a cloud of pollen.

The bandersnatch appears! It fires quills at Hobie, Pressi, and Kezzem. All hit! Hobie takes 20 damage; Pressi takes 15 damage; Kezzem takes 21 damage. Each of you must also make a DC 28 Reflex save or the quill becomes lodged in your flesh, causing ongoing pain and giving you the sickened condition. The viper vine is quiet for the moment,

And the map.

Murphy believes that the viper vine may be slowed for a short time (3 full rounds in this case) by exposure to cold, which he effects via the spell ice storm. The vine with seductive pollen receives 12 hp bludgeoning damage, and 7+50%=10 hp cold damage. He places the spell such that his friends are just outside the area of effect. Then he gets ready to cast another spell. He looks down to try to figure out where his friends are at the moment.

Kezzem draws his daggers and moves toward the bandersnatch.

Bliss is still captivated, and now Mookie and Hobie have joined him. They continue moving toward the viper vine, as does Valerie.

Succotash summons a purple worm, which unfortunately succumbs to the pollen immediately. Succotash hits the viper vine with a Flame Strike. Plants are not especially nimble, and it takes all the damage.

Murphy drops an Ice Storm on the plant, which doesn't do a lot of damage, but does do some cold damage, which immediately slows the viper vine. It does not have any effect on the pollen already in the air, though.

Pressi casts Confusion on her captivated allies! Bliss, Hobie, and presumably Mookie and Valerie need to make a Will save, DC 21 or become Confused. I'm going to say that if a creature is Confused, and rolls "act normally," then the captivation is still in effect and the creature moves toward the viper vine. Otherwise, the Confused action takes precedence. Let me know if you have questions.

Tali protects herself with a Stoneskin, then uses Message to ask her companions if anyone else wants one.

The viper vine is slowed by the cold, but there's a very tempting purple worm within range, so it attacks! A tendril hits Succotash's purple worm, doing a whopping 5 points of damage! It tries to grapple, but fails, and anyway I think the purple worm may be too big for it to grapple in the first place.

The bandersnatch attacks Kezzem! Its first attack misses with a natural 1! The creature is enraged. It bursts into flame! It keeps attacking! Kezzem is bitten for 20 points damage, plus 3 fire damage. He is clawed twice, once for 16 damage plus 5 fire damage, and again for 17 damage plus 2 fire damage. Then he is slapped with the tail for 24 damage plus 10 fire damage, and must make a DC 28 Reflex save or get a quill lodged in his skin and the sickened condition.

And the map.

Huge air elemental druid Murphy goes all whirlwind. 50' tall, he rips through the foliage, scattering leaves and stems this way and that. He flies just a bit above the heads of his friends - enough to suck up air - and pollen within - but tries to avoid vacuuming up his friends. He has to go a little higher where ponies and velociraptors stand. Should any of his friends get inadvertently scooped up, he drops them off immediately within a few feet. His goal is to purify and, what, saladify? the air. Stop the presence of the pollen by shooting it into the air above the canopy to cause it to dissipate.

He has perfection in flying, as well as wingover, can pull 180 degree turns without breaking a sweat - because, hey, air elementals don't sweat, right? The area on the map with the pinkish dotted lines show the area he covers. In one round 'running' he can cover 600' (5x120'). As the path he takes is 25' across, and allows for 5' of overlap from row to row. Visibility will be compromised for at least a round (likely total concealment for everyone within the area covered). One hopes no allergies are triggered. Vegetation will pretty much be cut down in the area he covered. The rectangular area is 90'x55'. Total linear feet traveled are 355. He ends by flying up a way to be above the field, looking down over the scattering of greenery he has accomplished, and to see how everyone fares at that point.

Let me know if any modifications to results are deemed necessary.

With Rumpus in such danger, I presume he gets yet another roll against the captivation. Also, if Rumpus is confused, he has to stop and attack Harper next turn.

Pressi hopes that this beats continuing towards a creature's maul. At any event, she needs to turn her attention elsewhere, casting Bestow Curse (Focused) on the Bandersnatch. (Will DC 20, curse=50% chance to lose turn).

Succotash casts Searing Light at the bandersnatch. The spell hits, and does damage. Meanwhile, the purple worm wanders over next to the viper vine.

Hobie, Bliss, and Mookie are not Confused, but are still captivated and continue moving toward the viper vine's deadly embrace.

Before they can breach the Wall of Thorns, however, Tali casts a Wall of Force to encircle them, along with Succotash, Valerie, Harper, and Rumpus. Mookie, who can fly, continues toward the viper vine.

Kezzem lays hands on himself. He uses his Detect Evil ability, and the bandersnatch does not detect as evil. He goes on total defense.

Murphy begins to whirl, trying to fling the pollen up out of the area. He also flings around a fair bit of foliage, and also some ice, because the Ice Storm is still active (please remember to roll damage for this round and next round.). And a couple of times he flings his companions, but what's a little nonlethal damage among friends? The important point is--Murphy succeeds. He doesn't remove every last little bit of pollen, but he does get enough that it's no longer a danger.

The captivating pollen is gone. Nobody has to roll saves anymore. Captivated creatures return to themselves next round. Confused creatures are still confused. And, of course, most previously-captivated creatures are now inside a Wall of Force, so there's a new challenge! But the pollen is gone.

Murphy gets a Hero Point because that was darned clever.

The viper vine is still slowed by the cold damage, but there's this tasty purple worm right in front of it, so it tries to eat it. Succotash's purple worm takes 16 points of damage, plus 10 points of acid damage.

The bandersnatch attacks Kezzem again! Kezzem is bitten twice, once critically, and clawed once, also critically. Total damage is 90 physical plus 34 fire damage. Let me know if you need that broken down.

Since that (presumably) puts Kezzem down for the count, the bandersnatch turns its attention to Tali. It gazes menacingly at her, and Tali must succeed at a DC 29 Fortitude check or become Confused for one round.

And the map.

Saturday April 25th, 2020 10:16:22 AM

Clear-headed for the first time in this encounter, Mookie and Bliss take stock.

Mookie is in the middle of snow and sleet, next to a formidable foe with reach, so that while the withdraw action offers protection from AoOs for the first threatened square he leaves, continuing to fly away will definitely trigger an AoO anyway.

Bliss is encased in a 20 ft wall of force, cannot see Mookie through a wall of thorns, and his friends are dying as they fight a dire porcupine.

Okay, Mookie first. In S14, next to Planty McPlantFace, he uses a swift action to turn on his witchy shared Shield of Faith. Then, Total Defense is a standard action that (with Acrobatics) raises his AC by 6 to 46. Then, trusting to that sweet AC, Mookie just flies away. The Ice Storm counts as difficult terrain, so Mookie flies 15 ft south to S-17, counting that as 30 ft of move. He has Fly 80, so with the rest of his move action (assuming he evades that AoO), he flies to S-20 (15 more feet of move, 45 used), then to O-16, He taps on the wall of force and thinks to Bliss, "Okay, Kid, I'm out."

Bliss gives a thumbs-up and ponders his own dilemma. A second later, he focuses on the combat like a laser (enters rage as a free action, roleplayed as focus rather than anger), activates his own shared Shield of Faith as a swift action, casts Beast Shape III and takes on his OctoBliss form. With his always-active spider climb cloak and tentacles with 20 ft reach, he just reaches over the top of the wall of force and pulls himself up and over. That's it for Bliss's move this round.

Tali succumbs to the basilisk's gaze attack.

Meanwhile, Succotash uses his Dimensional Hop ability to snatch Kezzem out of harm's way, then uses Breath of Life to halt his journey to Gargul. Meanwhile, the purple worm powers through the Wall of Thorns to attack the bandersnatch. It hits! The worm damages the bandersnatch, at the cost of 8 points of piercing damage and 4 points of fire damage to itself from the bandersnatch's quills. Also, the worm must succeed at a DC 28 Reflex save or get a quill lodged in its flesh, causing the sickened condition. The worm attempts to grapple, but cannot hold the nimble murder kitty [CMD 57].

Kezzem stands up and heals himself some more.

Murphy begins a summoning spell.

Bliss becomes Octo-Bliss! He climbs out of the Wall of Force. Mookie attempts to retreat from the viper vine, provoking an attack of opportunity. But the plant cannot hit the well-protected raven.

Hobie finds a likely branch overhead (there are plenty), and uses a Dimension Door to get up there. The rain of arrows starts next round.

Pressi ends her Confusion spell.

The viper vine begins creeping northwards, pursing the purple worm.

The bandersnatch has a new target, and it is Octo-Bliss! It has to move, so it only gets one attack this round. It hits! Bliss takes 25 damage, plus 5 fire damage.

Then the bandersnatch glares at Murphy! Murphy must make a DC 29 Fortitude save or be Confused for 1 round. If he is confused, he attacks the nearest creature.

Hopeful retcon: Just before the monster attacks, Bliss would like to turn on his plant domain bramble armor, which he can do as a free action, that is, even on an enemy's turn. If allowed, that inflicts 5 damage to the beastie. If not allowed, Bliss turns it on now, and so each time the monster hits him, it will take 1d6+4 damage.

Bliss's Heroes' Breakfast temp hit points nullify about half of the damage inflicted by the dire porcupine, but it still smarts. "You know what else will smart," Bliss thinks, "those darn porcupine stickers!"

"Ha!" thinks Mookie back, "take it like a hero! Here, I'll help."

Using his total defense again, Mookie flies to the other side of the monster to FLANK. If he provokes an AoO, well, his AC46 may save him, and at least then that eats up an AoO, maybe the monster's only one.

Bliss uses his quickened spell-like ability to grant himself divine favor (+3 to hit and damage) this round. That's his swift action, so he will have to wait for his arcane strike for next round.

Alas, there's no avoiding this. Bliss grits his teeth, takes a five ft step forward, and unleashes 8 tentacles and a bite!

Tentacles hit ACs 31, 22, 22, 33, 33, 24, 24, 25
... for damage of 16, 15, 16, 14, 15, 14, 13, 14
Bite hits AC 25 for 26.

The greater air elemental, whom Murphy summoned to a spot about 35 above the ground, hears what the druid says. She looks ever so slightly down on the body of the bandersnatch; transforms into a whirlwind, 60' tall, and 30' in diameter, then sweeps across the gargantuan monstrosity, skipping along its surface almost like a stone, but with multiplied force...

However, it manages to do only 17 hp damage to the formidable creature. She ends her turn on the other side of the bandersnatch.

[Note: I find myself, unusually, feeling a bit confused as to how to handle attack / damage, saving throws, etc. Despite all the rolls, I'll go with the most conservative: the elemental hit once (nat 20) for 17 hp damage. Also, am having a hard time figuring out how a creature made up of 10 pounds total of the stuff of air would get anything lodged in its 'flesh' when in whirlwind form, since any materials caught up in the whirlwind tend to get spun around and cast forth into the surrounding air. If you think the elemental should roll, the Reflex save is +18, so please roll if you think it ought to apply.]

Murphy's air elemental whirls the bandersnatch for some damage, and your DM agrees that it's silly to think an air elemental can get a quill lodged anywhere. The elemental does, however, take 2 points of damage and 9 points of fire damage. Murphy casts Call Lightning Storm.

Succotash's purple worm hits the bandersnatch twice. The bandersnatch is unaffected by the poison, and the purple worm takes 6 damage plus 10 fire damage. Valerie makes her way toward the viper vine. Succotash casts Mass Inflict Serious Wounds. Weirdly, the plant makes its save. I don't know what that looks like, but I'll just go with it.

Pressi begins a summoning while Harper gets into position near the viper vine.

The bandersnatch heals a little of its damage. The air elementals are too high for it to reach, and Mookie is too small to make a decent meal. The purple worm is underground? Succotash, how much of the worm is underground? Anyway, there's a perfectly good target right there in Octo-Bliss, so that's where it focuses its attention! It hits Bliss 5 times (one critical), which means it takes 32 points of damage from the brambles. Bliss takes 122 damage plus 23 fire damage.

Then the bandersnatch glares at Kezzem. Kezzem must make a DC 29 Fortitude save or become Confused for a round. If confused, you deal 1d8 points of damage + Str modifier to self with item in hand.

The viper vine targets Harper. It bites the big cat for 11 damage plus 14 acid damage. Four tendrils lash out and hit for another 34 damage. And Harper is grappled!

And the map.

Bliss takes another 163 damage. He had 167, so his current total is 4.

Reflex saves vs nauseated: 20 and 18. Bliss is sickened.
[Actually, those did not include a +2 from Lightning Reflexes, but it would not have mattered]
Sickened -- The character takes a -2 penalty on all attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks.

Bliss can't end his rage to cast a spell, because ending his rage means immediately sinking to -26 hp! He can't attack, and even full defense will do nothing. All he can think to do is to run away, using acrobatics to avoid provoking AoOs. He uses a hero point for a +8 on the roll, and takes a -2 sickened, for a net +6 to his +35 base.

Acrobatics 61 with a nat 20! Bliss tumbles back, moving at half speed while in the monster's reach. I moved my token south, but I think I can eke another 20 ft of move headed away.

Mookie caws, "The Kid's got the right idea! Run away! Run!"

He uses his standard action on total defense, then moves up and away, trying to fly above the monster's reach.

Seeing Bliss take a beat down, and seeing him withdraw, Succotash dimensional hops 60ft, and cast Heal restoring 150 hp to Bliss, and removing his sickened condition. He will then burn a hero point to begin summoning an augmented celestial T-Rex, via summon monster VII.

The purple worm lashes out with both it the bandersnatch with both it's bite and sting again. the bite hits AC 30 and the sting hits AC 38. The bite does 32 damage, and the sting does 23 damage.

Unable to pounce on the viper vine due to the difficult terrain, Valerie advances, and lashes out with one of her talons hitting AC 24 for 21 damage plus 5 shock and 4 frost, for a total of 30 damage.

"AVOID THE GAZE OF THE BANDERSNATCH!" Murphy advises his companions. Who knows, that might give them a +2 circumstantial bonus on their Fortitude saving throws versus that attack :-)

Murphy drops a 30' tall 5' diameter cylinder of lightning upon the large cat-like hexapod closely adjacent to where the greater air elemental passes - meanwhile she almost damages the beast, but not quite (needed 32, rolled 31). Murphy figures she at least enjoys the tingle of the nearby electricity. It's an air elemental thing. [Note: 5d10 rather than 5d6 due to proximity of whirlwind]. Damage: 25, or half if reflex save vs DC 33.

Murphy flies repeatedly to try to bash the bandersnatch. He wonders whether it can be polymorphed into a lemur. Twice he connects for 17 then 22 hp damage, 39 total.

The greater air elementals ends up in the same places she started, but just a bit lower down - about 25' above the forest ground. Murphy ends about 40' in the air at the bottom of the 50' vortex.

Pressi, hearing Murphy, makes note of it. "Careful with your wish, Murphy. You know how I tend to go overboard. Hey, guys, anyone asking for a flat footed creature. Maybe one with hairy palms?"

Pressi's eyes begin to move to the back of the head, as does that of the Bandersnatch and... I guess of the Viper Vine. Maybe it has mushrooms on it that can move to the back of the head. Various tongues continue as she flies over the wall.

(Cast Living Voodoo Blindness on both, no save. Also cast on cat Quickened Ill Omen, no save, 3 roll twices.)

Harper struggles with the vine, unleashing its natural attacks.
(Bite attack: 22, Claw attacks 35 and 26 (forgot flanking bonus). If any hit, damage is 9+trip, 10 and 8, respectively.)

Pressi's summons finishes - 4 swarms of wasps (caster level 14 - we are still L15, right?) right on top of a plant. (Each does 2d6+poison damage, no attack rolls. That's 29 damage + 4 rolls against -1 Dex, Fort DC 13).

In the Jungle, the Fruminous BanderSnatch Jungle...

{OOC: Made a mistake rolling dice. I meant to not roll dice and just summon one creature}

Tali casts Summon Monster VII to bring forth a Dinosaur, Tyrannosaurus (with the celestial creature template as per Jerm-boy Canaday) right behind the Fruminous Bandersnatch, without looking at the Bandersnatch, just the sky. Once the animal appears, Tali requests that it attacks to the death the Bandersnatch!

Kezzem, despite his brave words, succumbs to the Confusion effect and damages himself.

Bliss and Mokie spend the round getting away from the bandersnatch.

Succotash heals Bliss. Making a heroic effort, he begins casting a summoning spell. Meanwhile, the purple worm attacks the bandersnatch, hitting with its sting, while Valerie moves up to attack the viper vine. She does not hit her target.

Hobie fires again, this time taking more care with his aim. It pays off; all but the last shot hit.

Murphy calls a warning, then calls down lightning. The bandersnatch stops moving.

Pressi uses Living Voodoo Doll to blind the viper vine. Harper attacks the vine, managing to hit with a claw. The wasps show up, and damage the vine. Unfortunately, being a plant, it is immune to poison.

The bandersnatch remains unconscious, although it heals some damage. The viper vine bites at Harper, but manages to miss with a natural 1. It then constricts Harper for 9 damage. It lashes out at Valerie with its tendrils, but misses.

And the map. The bandersnatch is unconscious but alive. It has fast healing so somebody should keep an eye on it.

Murphy and his air elemental continue attacking the bandersnatch, trying to kill it outright.

Bliss does more non-lethal damage.

Tali's newly arrived T-Rex finishes off the giant porcupine-cat. Its blow wouldn't have hit a conscious bandersnatch, but it isn't nearly as nimble now that it's just lying there.

The bandersnatch is dead.

Hobie, Succotash, and Succotash's menagerie finish off the viper vine.

Pressi is concerned for Harper, but the big cat is fine now that his foe is dead. The wasps continue to swarm the downed vine.

Pressi can save her spells, and Tali can save her summoning; the battle is over.

Hero Points to Kezzem and Bliss for hanging in and absorbing full attacks from the murder kitty!

"Thank you, creature of the stuff of air. You have helped us vanquish a fearsome foe. I am Murphy, and I love your kind.
"There is halfling town called "Humble's Ford." It lies in the middle of Crescent Valley. On a nearby hill stands a beautiful white spire. The spire was built out of gratitude to the creatures of the air. Come there, sometime, and dance through the Spire of Music with others.
"You are free to go your way. Fare well."
"Are all well?" the druid asks his friends. He sees a few wounds here and there. He gathers animals and people together who have a need for healing. Murphy casts mass cure serious wounds, healing 32 hp of damage to all, halflings and animals alike.

"I'm going to do something that will be bloody. That is harvesting some parts of the bandersnatch, and some of the viper vine." He uses his +1 scimitar to handle the cutting. The eyes; pituitary glands. Other organs, and the right forepaw with its claws. Anyone who wishes to help, he is more than fine with that.

"The eyes rolled back in your head, beloved - you are impressively scary," he comments on one of Pressi's spell-casting actions late in the battle.

"Bliss, Hobie - I am impressed that you suffered so much, yet still battled on. We are a brave bunch, as far as I can tell. Thank the heavens none of us died. Almost, maybe, but not quite. And you, Harper. What can I say?"

Dead BanderSnatch

In the aftermath of the battle, Bliss turns back into a halfling, and Kezzem wonders aloud who stabbed him.

Succotash uses a Speak With Animals ability to thank the t-rex and purple worm before dismissing them. He tells Valerie she is a good girl, and Valerie reminds him that good girls are generally rewarded with treats.

Murphy bids farewell to the air elemental, then announces his intention to harvest bandersnatch bits. Tali wonders whether that is strictly necessary.
