3: Down the Worm Hole

DM Robert - "Anything else we need to take care of before we descend?"
Tuesday April 28th, 2020 8:22:13 PM

Stock bids Dorbin and the cat, Emily, goodbye.

Zanderallen is ready to go down the tunnel.

Dorbin says his farewells. Perchance to meet another day.

Carver asks for a sword and the wand. Just a reminder, if you cast invisibility on yourself and all your stuff become invisible, but there will still but it does not make the light source invisible (well the flaming lance is but not the area illuminated). Thus you will 'look' like a large will-o-the-wisp.

Bartomus thinks they should get going and puts in an advance order from the soon to be tailor of magical garb.

Micah bids Dorbin farewell. And asks about taking one of the cloaks. He also asks about the crossbow and magic bolts. Note, there is 1 working repeating heavy crossbow, this is considered an exotic weapon. There are technically 10, +1 frost bolts, 5 are in each 'clip'. You can remove them from the clip if you want to use them in a normal crossbow.

Stohp says her goodbyes to Dorbin.

Carver (part du) Scroll 1 is Move Earth, scroll 2 is another Wall of Stone, both are written as a level 12 caster.
oh and from last post... Lady Larvanya will channel energy several times until everyone is fully healed.

Sid gives some advice to the love lorn to Dorbin as he says his goodbyes.

-------------------

The party says its farewells and makes ready to drop down into the tunnel. The path is about 15 feet wide as you descend. The tunnel goes downward at a 45 degree angle for about 200 feet and then begins to corkscrew into the earth. Following it down would not be difficult. After making the first bend into the corkscrew you note another tunnel that cuts down and goes rather more steeply into the mountain. This must be where the purple worm backed up and then made a new tunnel/shaft to allow the Troglodytes that were behind it up into the surfacing tunnel.

After travelling perhaps another 20 minutes you note numerous side tunnels leading up and horizontal. Luckily you have a dwarf with you that can tell you right now, you are probably just below the lowest level of the plateau. This may be tunnels that lead to other 'incursions' made by the Troglodytes on other nights.

Following the 'fresh' trail of the Purple Worm will require a DC 15 Survival check.
Following the 'fresh' tracks of the Troglodytes will require a DC 15 Survival check.

Marching order?

Stock nods to Micah and liberates 3 of the healing potions from the corpses. "I have some already but...something tells me I'll need these."

Every once in a while Stock mentions something about being underground in a tunnel, clearly comfortable in his current surroundings. "This way, the worm left some strange ridged witness marks as it passed. Looks like it retreated back down this tunnel. My uncle could have used a worm like this for his mining..."

"Sure, I could take one of the cloaks, more of a capelet I guess," the Taur said as he draped the cloak about letting it fall to his hips. Looked at it, the elvish vision showing more of the size and fit than the detailed style of it.

Bartomus fell in with the others and worked with Stock to follow the purple worm's trail. While Stock was comfortable, Bartomus was still trying to come to the realization that a worm had made the tunnel, and at times shot a disbelieving look at Stock. "Not sure I would want one of these around, making me think the giant bugs of the Weeping Woods were a bit more tame."

Bartomus pointed out trail sign, slime, sometimes worse which he pointed to and gave "work around that stink" suggestions to the others.

Zander gives Dorbin a brief farewell to avoid making a scene, "Domi bless you Dorbin. Remember you're a wizard not a mouse. Don't become a stranger." Moving away he closes his visor before anyone can see the tears.

The atmosphere inside the tunnel quickly stiffens his attitude, "Stock and Bart looks like you've got the lead. Carver and I will follow a little behind you and Stohp, Sid, and Micah right behind us. Let's hope the worm has decided it needs a nap and it not prowling these mouth-sized tunnels."

Zander holds his sword aloft as a light source for himself and those near him.

Carver will also try to aid in the tracking. (survival 11 = success)
Carver will be ready to slide the leather shield over the flaming past in case he needs to invis himself, unless he needs the light.
As they travel deeper down the tunnel he mentions to no one in particular, "Remind me to buy a set of slotless slippers of spider climbing. It would make life a lot easier as well as interesting."

Stock takes some treasure and then leads the party down the tunnel, easily following the trail.

Bartomus takes some loot and helps path-find the trail.

Zanderallen says goodbye to Stock and provides another light source in the tunnel.

Dorbin watches his friends descend.

Carver takes some potions as well keeps his lit lance out.

Sid doesn't agree with Zanderallen's suggested marching order and weaves his way toward the front.

Micah?
Stohp?
They must be marching along mad to be in the rear.

-------------------

Marching order
Stock - Bartomus
Sid
Carver - Zanderallen
Micah - Stohp

The going is rough, the uneven footing the constant walking down slope, a misstep could make the pratfall down the staircase seem light hearted. After about 2 hours of careful walking you come to a hole. Stock, being a dwarf, recognizes that you are actually standing atop a large chunk of granite. Maybe the purple worm has difficulty tunneling through that. Stock can also tell you that you are about 1/2 through the mountain now, so about less than a mile from the top. (From 'sea level', where the lake is to the top of the plateau is about 7500 feet. You are now about 4000 feet from the plateau.)

With some examination you note that the shaft is about 50 feet. It looks like the sloping tunnel then continues on from that point. It also looks like some claw marks are in part of the wall. That probably explains how the Troglodytes navigated it. At least the wall is not a smooth surface. However, it is going to require a climb check to navigate it.

Everyone please make a DC 10 climb check rope and a piton(or some other way to anchor the rope as you repel down) will reduce this to a DC 5 check.

"Well, we're not the best climbers around...anybody have spikes? If not, maybe I and some of the other climbers can be the anchors and then we free climb down."

As he mentions being the anchor, he looks at Stohp, Bartomus and Carver. "You guys any good at climbing?", he asks doubtfully. He then looks at his rope questioningly and glances around the cave.

Micah is content with being rear guard, wielding his illuminated mace to provide light for himself.

When Stock calls out about climbing gear, he pulls off his pack. [b]"I have us covered. I kept the gear we used for exploring the woods. Here are some pitons and rope. Also, if anyone is a bit concerned about making it, let me pray for you before you descend."

When it comes his turn, he stows his shield then he pauses to pray to Domi before climbing down. Mid way down, he slips, but, by the power of Domi, he is able to recover and safely makes it to the bottom.

"No, do I look like I climb," there was a bit of snark in Bartomus' response to Stock's question. "Not good at flying either, for what it's worth. So, what if Stohp and I figure out who can climb better, then the two of us who are a lot bigger than you all, hold the rope as you all climb down. Wonder if Stock was made bigger held the rope and then just dropped down in her large form? Would that work? Do we have room?"

Bartomus tossed out the idea.

Zander stows his shield and begins his descent once the rope is set. Hampered by his heavy armor he barely makes it down with the help of the rope. "Good think you had that gear Micah." He looks around waiting for the others while he straps his shield back onto his arm.

Fortunately Micah has some gear and manages to provide it to others. Micah successfully makes it down.

Stock doesn't see much in the way to anchor something, but he does make it down the rope.

Bartomus still has not climbed down. The target is 5 now, and Micah can give you a +2.

Zander climbs down.

Carver offers to anchor the rope, but Micah and Sid have offered to provide pitons. Caver attempts to climb down but fails, fortunately he manages to Feather Fall. I will wait for you to 'go down' in case you are still wanting to be last, as Bartomus has not rolled for his descent as yet.

Sid goes down the rope first. The tunnel seems to continue on its descent.I believe you can auto succeed because rolling a 1 is not considered a fumble on skills. But I could be wrong, I defer to Zachary who has memorized the rule book rather than trying to spend 30 minutes or more trying to look it up. So that's my ruling unless someone wants to contest.

Stohp makes it down the rope. No you could not take 10 because there is the possibility of damage with failure.

Stock stares up as Carver loses his hold on the rope and the plummets...and then drifts down. "Right. Good trick there. Sid as we are getting closer, I'd say you should go first but you can't see well down here. I'll sneak ahead and if I see anything, I have a potion that will make me invisible. At least that's what they said it did when I bought it." He grabs a murky purple vial and holds it up, looking at it questioningly.

Stock does his best moving forward. "Bart - I'm not sure how well you will be able see. No offense but I'll make my way ahead and scout."

At first, he is shocked at how quietly he moves...but then his keen ears pick up the scuffle of his own boots and he sighs. He grabs the potion of invisibility again and has it ready to down at the first sign of trouble.

Micah suggests that subtly has never been this groups strong point.

Zanderallen feels uneasy.

Carver looks around but at this point see's nothing out of the ordinary.

Stohp's decides they ears are going to be more important than they eyes down here.

Sid will try to scout but will still be limited by the light source.

Stock ventures forth trying to get further ahead than the light at his back, which paints a nice silhouette. Fortunately the tunnels still twists and turns as you descend. After another half hour to 45 minutes of travel Stock stops. Yes he definitely hears something up ahead, and from the sound of it there is a larger chamber ahead as well. What he hears is two voices, speaking Draconic, which he doesn't understand. But they are speaking quietly and in no hurry. Also the voices are in that slightly squeaky tone of the kobolds.

Stock is fairly sure the voices didn't hear him. At least they didn't see him either as he didn't see them. Stock returns to the group to inform them that it appears they are nearing some sort of large open chamber, and there might be someone waiting for them.

A better approach might be for me to go invisible and go around them, blocking any escape. Then you guys roll up and try to parlay. If they run, I'll hold the line as well as I can."

If he gets agreement, he'll sneak ahead again and when he gets within what he judges is about 60' (so where he can make out the kobolds), he'll down the invisibility and move to try to hind behind them in the most obvious escape route.

Carver tries to cover his lance a bit and moves.

Stock being invisible AND able to understand Draconic, takes a moment to let things sink in.

Stohp waits patiently for the scout to return.

Bartomus moves forward straining his hearing, and while he hears some faint talking cannot understand what is being said.

Zanderallen rounds the corner. Counting in his head from when he knows Stock takes the potion, Zander waits one minute. He then advances to M6 and looks to see what's there.

Micah moves forward, hating the waiting game.

Sid creeps forward, bow out. Realize with a bow you are still limited by the light sources, I think you would only have 60 foot of vision beyond each light source that you can see.

Sid moves forward and tries to see. With Zanderallen's movement you can now see clearly 40 feet beyond him. There He can just barely make out a kobold at Y20 and AA20. The kobolds appear to be wearing manacles around their legs. You can "see" up to 40 feet in torchlight, and 20 more feet as dim murky shadow images.

INVISIBLE Stock appears to be talking nearby, letting you know there's an ambush ahead and that several trogs are riding giant monitor lizards. And there's some more Trogs doing some magicky stuff. You are now Sk on the map

The kobolds look at Zanderallen, he notes their eyes seem strangely luminesent. Both are now cringing. "You gonna die." It responds to Zanderallen's question.

And then javelins come zinging at Zanderallen. Actually 14 javelins come sailing your way, 7 in one wave and 7 more again. You surmise that there were 7 throwers but they threw twice each. A few of the missiles bounced off your armor and shield but nothing really had any effect. Yes they can see you, quite clearly. Stock pops into visibility and wails on Trog 7's mount. The first hit (24 total) doesn't kill it but the second hit does. I'm only showing their normal AC.

Micah moves into the room and casts enlarge on Zanderallen. Well I figure they are speaking in draconic and you can't see their arm movements. However, since they are not arcane casting, I will give you that they are casting "Enhance Stench"

Sid You cannot target #1, who has been speaking from where you are standing because you would have to be able to bend your arrows around a corner and also he's just outside 40 foot radius of Zander's light. From the narrow opening where you are you could see 8, 4, and 5. Also with all the larges moving in front of your line of fire, I think they have cover. I'm going to assign your arrows to #8 on the principle of helping Zaner take down someone. fires and hits Trog 8.

The two kobolds move away from Bartomus.

Oh poop, I've been forgetting to add their +4 for favored enemy human. As you can generally now see some of your opponents Trog's 1-8 are mounted on giant lizards. They appear to have no armor but are wearing braces. They have sheaves of javelins on their mounts. They are also armed with clubs. Trogs 9 and 10 are wearing hide armor. They are carrying a couple of javelins and have spiked gauntlets.

Trog 1 laughs and cast's his javelins at Carver.

The two nearby kobolds went scrambling and he fished out another magic bullet for his sling. He saw Stock go after the troglodyte rider with such a fury that Bartomus shifted where he stood to focus his attention on the trog off to his left. His arm twirled quickly

Stohp moves and throws tanglefoot bags. You're not giving specific coordinates, so I'm guessing at your placement. Trog 5 manages to raise his legs avoiding the bag, 8 does not. However, the mounts can move as you didn't target the floor. I guess 8 would have some difficulty attacking? Though I realized too late you moved and thus you can't 'attack' twice.

Stock takes a might swing and hits well, but does not kill his opponent.

Bartomus slings a bullet but misses.

Carver charges Trog 8 walloping him good, but failing to kill him. missed it by that much

Zanderallen puts Trog 8 out of the picture.

Sid moves. S21 puts you in a wall putting you at T21

Bartomus you have reach and your glaive is a reach weapon, technically you can be 15 feet away from someone and hit them with it, you can't be adjacent to someone you want to use the glaive on. Therefore... takes a 5 foot step and takes a swing at Trog 2 but misses.

Zanderallen provides some comments on the Troglodyte's hygiene and hits it.

Stock makes Trog butter out of troglodyte 7 and then kills Trog 6's mount with one blow.

Micah moves up on a giant monitor lizard and gives it a double smack.

Stohp maintains her grapple on Trog 2.HOWEVER, per rules on page 200 of the Core Rulebook, "Once you are grappling an opponent, a successful check allows you to continue grappling the foe, and also allows you to perform one of the following actions (as part of the standard action spent to maintain the grapple." Move: Damage, Pin, Tie up (note performing tie up before pinning is a -10 grapple check). As Trog 2 is still 'mounted' ... Stohp successfully moves rips the Trog off his saddle. That way you can pin him to the ground rather than pin him to the lizard next round.

Carver attacks Trog 1 hitting him 50% of the time. Trog's are medium sized, the mounts they are riding are large size, thus the legend/key on the map saying Trogs riding giant lizard, or Trogs on foot.

Sid...see's the Trog 7 become butter, a truly grisly sight, I mean there's splattered blood, entrails, flesh, in a squishy pile and a couple feet around where trog 7 was standing. You didn't call out a different target, but all the Trog's have AC better than you rolled.

Zanderallen feels the power of Domi flow through him as he lays into the Trogs. He is heartened to see Trog 5 slump and fall off his mount, dead.

Stock hits the lone lizard man by him, laughing rather darkly.

Stohp grapples lizard 2. I was looking up your greater grapple feat you can't be tying up on the first grapple tackle.

Bartomus moves to attack Trog 1...AC22 puts you 5 feet away. Remember you are large, that gives you 5 foot reach, your glaive adds 5 feet. Attacking anything inside that 10 foot range is a penalty because of the reach status of your weapon. but misses. You have no flank bonus unless you are attacking from an opposite side, so the trog still has AC 19.

Micah adds to Stohp's grappling attempts.

Carver whacks on trog 1. He intends to take a 5 foot step but suddenly finds Bartomus right up against him.

(She is stench immune, I mentioned it in a few posts but didn't want to edit my header cause if I did I'd forget to ever remove it XD. Also I don't think she's cut up the rope so it's a moot point she can't carry it with her to another target).

Stohp dusts her hands off. That worked marvelously. She makes a note to herself to buy more rope and cut it all to 10-20 foot sections. Stohp is none too pleased with the priest and strides over and starts getting all up in his business with her grabby hands. He is grappled.

Stock charges forward and hits the priest with his charged flail.

Carver strikes at Trog 1 with his lance laying the villain out. Opting to have you strike Trog 4 with your hoove and then gives trog 4 a hoofing.

Micah moves forward and strikes at the scroll trog 9 had taken out. read, read, hmm, well, harrumph The scroll rips into multiple pieces as the blunt force of the mace crinckles it pulling it through the Trog's claws for good measure.

Zanderallen decides to start clearing the road and swings at the lizards slaying them both!

Stock swings connecting to the Trog held in Stohp's hands. The aftermath of that swing is unsettling to say the least. There seems to be no stopping his raging need to make Trog butter, not that anyone in their right minds would eat it. You over killed him by 20 hit points.

Zanderallen skewers the departing lizard dropping it before it gets away. Zanderallen moves and tries to slice both the Trogs, but winds up missing.

Sid recovers from the blast of the hidden mind flayer, at least that's his story and he's sticking to it and sends an arrow into trog 4.

Carver catches trog 4 with two attacks. Sorry yes, they are companions, these guys all have ranger levels, well except for the two priests.

Micah decides to show the power of Domi to this worshiper of some abysmal fiend, and whacks trog 9 twice.

Stohp looks down at the bloody pulp of the remains of the Trog in her hands (see Stock's action) and realizes that some of the Trog remains are also now coating her front. I think a nat 20 always succeeds even on skill checks.

Bartomus strikes at a helpless Trog 2 during the heat of battle. Fortunately he missed.

Stock charges forth and brings his tingly flail down on the head of the priestly trog 9. Once again showering all those nearby with gorey bits of trog goo. I mean really imagine it, that trog had 8 hp left and you just did 35 hp damage. Zanderallen, Micah, and Stock are covering in blood and scales...Stock more so because he's done it several times now.

Zanderallen is feeling the need to cleave, unfortunately 9 is so much...pieces..I'm re-assigning your strike to trog 4 and lizard 4 (5 is already dead) He strikes Trog 4 and his mount!. He kills the trog and gashes the mount badly.

Carver sees Trog 4 killed by Zanderallen and instead brings his attacks to bear on lizard 4, since the lizards don't seem inclined to end the combat once their companion has died. His attacks overcome the already wounded lizard killing it with his first lance hit. He then takes his other attacks into the as yet wounded lizard 1.

Stohp hesitates in battle feeling that things are coming to an end. She regrets Dorbin being gone and not having his prestidigitation spell to help her clean up.

As Sid aims he see's his targets fall, leaving only lizard 1, so he decides to shoot it, hitting both times and killing it.

Micah calls out as gore splashes around him, he closes his mouth quickly and finds there is nothing left to swing at.

The battle is over, in the cave now there's just you, some kobolds, and a squirming Trog and large monitor lizard that Stohp has tied up.

Micah shakes his head and blinks to clear his vision from the gore of Zanderallen's onslaught. Once he assures himself that their foes have been defeated, he returns his mace to his belt.

"Thank you, he responds to Carver at being cleaned. He, too, takes out a wand and starts healing Zanderallen, then himself, while keeping an eye on the two tied captives.

Once all are healed, and assuming the captives are cared for by others, he casts detect magic and takes a look around.

Zanderallen questions the kobolds and tries to get someone to remove the manacles.

Carver identifies the loot.I'm assuming you don't need me to repost it, and that your treasure keeper will be adding it in, or dividing out some potions? And then offers to pop rivets with his lance, which would a great feat of skill to try and hit something so small with something so large. Sorry the demon is merely an unspecified demon, it has no name in the module, but if you want I can come up with something.

Sid advices Carver's method of lock removal for last and takes a look at the manacles.
Looking at the substance hardness tables and trying to come up with something, I'm going to give it hardness 10 but the rivet itself only 1 hitpoint.

Stohp translates Bartamous's questions.

Micah takes some of the loot and then go to free a kobold. With a little patience he is successful.

Having knocked out two rivets and fully freeing one kobold, Micah, and everyone else-except Stock, is started when 8 other kobolds come from the darkness holding their chained hands out for Micah to work on. There are in fact 10 kobolds in this cave.

The kobold now free responds to Stohp. "Oh, well the big dude just asked what was going on here. Since you want more specific information, we're slaves of the Troglodytes that invaded our home and took what few of us are left. We were here to carry any goods found from the raiding party down to the lower mines. I think most of the population managed to escape, I'm not sure." The troglodyte's seem to think that their master controls him. I'd have to agree, somehow that thing only acts when the raiding party is ready to go, otherwise I'm afraid we'd all be its meal by now. That tunnel leads to the lower mines, that one to the Trodlodyte stronghold, though really it's just part of our city that they took over. That tunnel goes to the middle mines and a lot of storage and craft caverns. This tunnel goes to the upper mines which is also where many of the mushroom gardens are."

"As much as I hate the prospect of it, I agree that the worm should be our first priority. Defeating it will take away a significant weapon for the trogs and limit their ability to continue their raids and allow us, as Carver says, to confront it on our terms."

He turns to the scholarly appearing kobold, counting on Zandarallen to translate, "I am Micah Smith, priest of Domi, and, as all of us are, I am committed to removing the troglodyte incursion into your territory. Thank you for your information. Would you mind telling us some more?

"What can you tell us about where the purple worm is, what guards are with it, and what the capability of it and its master appear to be? Also, do you know any particular strengths or weaknesses we should be aware of if we wish to defeat it?"

Zanderallen introduces himself and the Silver Shields to the kobolds. He goes over to question the troglodyte, trying to play good cop.

Bartomus thinks maybe a rest is in order.

Carver proposes going after the worm now.

Micah works on freeing the kobolds and agrees maybe going after the purple worm first might be a sound idea.

Sid helps with kobold control and suggests a rest before taking on the purple worm. Sorry magical beast or dungeoneering would be right for the role, but you were nowhere near the minimum target number. However, you do recall from previous rolls made by your fellows, that 1 that purple worms have some pretty nasty poison, and they have a natural armor plating.

Stohp asks to be taken around to the tunnels. One of the kobolds leads you around to each tunnel pointing it out. Of course Stohp is still not going to see anything unless she has a light source to take with her. Stohp thinks the worm might rampage if they kill the master first.

LET me reiterate what you know about purple worms, barring a DC 22 or better knowledge dungeering or knowledge arcane. 1 - they are huge, really big. 2 - they have nasty poison. 3 - they have really good natural armor.

Also, from Farkerkel's description the skeletons sound like those skeletal champions you fought up top. You do know there's more than 2 of them from what your captive Trog up top said.

Farkerkel responds to Micah. "Didn't say it was a belt, said it was a collar. Worn right behind the head." Micah considers what he has been told of the "belt" then shares his conclusion, "That belt could be a modified shackle of compliance. If so the worm is more susceptible to being intimidated, not just by its master. Additionally, the manacle could be broken or, provided we could obtain the key, we could take control of the worm. This knowledge does not immediately lend itself to a plan, but, depending on what occurs, it might provide us some options should the right opportunity arise."

""I am good with the plan. Sid, before you and Stock head out, let me cast "hide from undead" on you. It will give you about ten minutes of being able to move past those skeletons without being noticed."

"Regarding resting, I have most of my spells and am not feeling fatigued. I propose making a move now before our foes realize we have penetrated their line."

================
Spellcraft 18 vs 18: Success
Casts hide from undead twice, once for Sid and once for Stock, from wand at CL1.
To see description of hide from undead Highlight to display spoiler: {Undead cannot see, hear, or smell creatures warded by this spell. Even extraordinary or supernatural sensory capabilities, such as blindsense, blindsight, scent, and tremorsense, cannot detect or locate warded creatures. Non-intelligent undead creatures (such as skeletons or zombies) are automatically affected and act as though the warded creatures are not there. An intelligent undead creature gets a single Will saving throw. If it fails, the subject can’t see any of the warded creatures. If it has reason to believe unseen opponents are present, however, it can attempt to find or strike them. If a warded creature attempts to channel positive energy, turn or command undead, touches an undead creature, or attacks any creature (even with a spell), the spell ends for all recipients.}

Zanderallen will take his standard spot at the front rank of the main group. "I agree it is getting late and I can start to feel it but I think we need to atleast take down the worm before we can rest safely, especially since we are as of yet undetected."

"Resting would be good, but I'll go with what the majority decides. I'm very low on what Lord Gargul grants me, and my arcane abilities don't match up very well, usually....."
He's still ready to go though....

Sid nods, "Thank you Micah. Right and remember to wait for the screaming. If I'm not screaming and flailing I'm fine." After his blessing from Micah Sid puts up Branwen and draws Mildred, his shortsword and begins to move forward. He peers through the darkness, looking for anything that would seem out of place.
