1 - Harpies... why is it always Harpies?

DM Dan - The Fog...
Tuesday April 14th, 2020 6:57:13 PM

You quickly being to work together with Ramsay to help put the ship back together, the anchor's been lowered so that you don't move off course at all. The Harpies bodies have nothing out of place on them, however their feathers are matted and they are remarkably unclean, you might even say they're filthy, disgustingly so.

Heal Check DC 14 - Highlight to display spoiler: {The Harpies have obviously not been looking after themselves, pruning or cleaning themselves properly.}

Mak - Highlight to display spoiler: {When going to the Aft castle, you strain your eyes, and while you can't see anything, you're certain you can hear something... a single, solitary voice out in the fog. You're pretty sure you can pinpoint where it's coming from.}

The ships repairs get underway, and it'll probably take half a day or so with you all chipping in to help.

"Hey Captain, what about our heat-driven fan, won't that propel us just fine, if a bit slowly, all on its own?"

Rolth will of course pitch in with fixing the ship and getting ready to move.

I agree with Rolth, we could move slowly while fixing these tears if we use our fan to push us. we could at least get out of the area where we were hit. I will keep using magic to fix sails, we don't have to be stationary for that, and we should have full use of the sails again by the end of the day.

Healing done Falco helps get the ship in order until the call that someone is in the water to the stern is made.

"Petals, it appears we are all here. Ramsey, count of the crew. Possibly someone went overboard or possible a trap."

He looks and listens off the back of the boat trying to see if the voice is familiar. {Perception: 28}

Kiwina tells Rolth to be ready with his song in case that's another harpy.

As for moving without sails, Kiwina still doesn't like the idea. If the fog were gone, that might be ok. But not being able to see where they are and are going, he worries that a damaged ship might not respond well if they encounter shoals.

Kiwina considers where they are and what these waters are like (know geography = 20) before proceeding.

DM Dan - The Fog...

Angus, Rolth and Elyas all put the ship back togeher again while Falco heals people and Mak makes mention of a voice he can hear.

Kiwina - Highlight to display spoiler: {These waters are usually calm, but fog banks and changeable weather is pretty common. It's relatively safe, you've not reached the shoals yet. }

Ramsay, hearing Mak quickly does a head count, getting everyone to sound off before rushing to the aft castle, and listening out.

"Captain, Mak's right, there's someone out there in the fog, it's not one of ours, but it might bear investigating, could be another ship, maybe they have spare wood, rigging and sails?"

He stays at the Aft castle and starts looking out to the sea, searching frantically for something.

Rolth points out to Falco the 12 foot rowboat that he owns and has contributed to the Rose’s equipment. (Giggling Ghost gift noted on Rolth’s sheet). However, he does not recommend setting off in the rowboat into the mist at this stage.

As the fan engine is stoked, Rolth will suggest calling out to the voice, in case it is someone in need of assistance. If it is a threat we can handle it, and if someone needs saving, well, in either case aren’t we supposed to be heroes?

DM Dan - The Fog...
Thursday April 16th, 2020 6:55:07 PM

As you all strain to hear, you can definitely begin to hear a voice... it seems hoarse and not too far away, but the fog makes it hard to tell. All you can hear is "Hello?!? Is anyone there?!?" the voice is cracking slightly, perhaps from lack of use, or dry throat, though you can't make out anything in the thick fog, you all begin to at least roughly where the voice is coming from.

Mak tied a line to his waist and handed the coiled end to Eylas, hung his bow on a belaying pin, and tentatively hopped over the rail as he allowed the magic to buoy him on the currents of air. He'd no idea how long the magic might last so he quickly descended to the waterline and then out in the direction he'd heard the voice. He nearly hovered over the swells but still managed to get wet as he got used to the magic as he looked about for the source of the voice. If he encountered any trouble he'd have to rely on his swords.

Hess looks at Rolth, Kiwina, Mak and Elyas, he doesn't really notice Falco, Tsak or Angus.

"Okay... okay... you got me... the harpies attacked the ship, they started cutting through the rigging." He points out on the Petal where. "Looks like they came to get you too... they attacked us and I ran and I hid. I don't really know what happened... I just... I couldn't fight them... they were too dangerous and I... I was scared. I came out once they had finished doing whatever it is they wanted to do... and the sails were torn the rigging destroyed and the ship was stranded."

"I came out as they flew away... I thought I saw them carrying some folk away... I assume the Captain was among as I couldn't find the Captain's body. He'd been acting strangely the last month or so. He was a good man but in the last few weeks he had been brooding more'n was normal for him and was muttering to himself while looking out at see."

He finishes the food and drink that he was provided.

"I don't know if any of the crew and the captain are still alive... if you're willing to go and help them that'd be grand... but I understand if you decide against it. The harpies are dangerous... in the meantime. If you want to go across to the Jubilee and pick her bones clean, I won't be stopping you."

As you all continue to interrogate Hess the fog begins to clear some more, and Hess smiles thankfully.

"The fog comes and goes. Sometimes lasts days, sometimes minutes. It's very changeable weather here We had some protection in the form of the crew being half way decent with blades. But against harpies that's only so useful... they took out the rigging first and their song made some of the crew jump overboard..."

He looks sad.

"Including Redlocks, my friend..." he takes a deep breath to compose himself.

"The carried the crew off in that direction." he points in a direction similar to the direction you're going but slightly off and away from your planned journey.

"Originally there were twenty of us... I found bodies of nine of me crewmates. After me that leaves ten possibly carried off. But like I said, some of the people jumped overboard... so I don't know how many they might have taken."

The hold -

Highlight to display spoiler: {The hold has various hard tack and other goods. Though most of it appears to be gone, either taken by the harpies, or lost when the ship was damaged there is probably a couple of hundred GPs worth of things here, once you get it all back to the ship it shouldn't take too long, however there are also some bits and pieces, that while they won't repair the heinous damage to the Jubilee will probably be useufl to repair the Rose.}

The Deck -

Highlight to display spoiler: {You notice there is quite a lot of blood, feathers, and scratch marks, there was clearly quite a hard won fight on the deck, however there doesn't really appear to be anything salvageable. The damage to the ship itself is far worse than you first believed, and it is unlikely the ship will ever sail again.}

The Aftcastle -

Highlight to display spoiler: {On the deck of the aftcastle is blood and feathers. Some chips in the wood where either claws or swords have made dents and damage to the timber frame of the ship. There is nothing of value here though. Upon looking over the sides and around at the ropes and rigging near the aftcastle you realise that the damage to the ship is far more subtle and far worse than you first though. It is clear this ship will never again sail.}

The Captain's Cabin -

Highlight to display spoiler: {The cabin is in good condition. He has a desk and on there are several pieces of navigation equipment and some good quality bedding and clothing. The bedding and clothing is probably worth 200gp, and the Navigation tools are clearly very high quality, (Masterwork navigation tools +2 bonus to checks made with them, value of 250gp). You also through thorough searching manage to find a hidden compartment under the bed with 12 gemstones in it... though you're not entirely sure of the value, they would need to be appraised.}

Between all of you, and some of the crew, you manage to get everything you're interested in off the ship before you hear a loud crack as something gives way, and the ship begins to sink slightly. It may settle again, but it seems likely it won't. All your moving around on the ship must have caused something to finally give up the ghost and break, thankfully by the time you hear the noise, you're all back aboard the Rose.

Ramsay looks to you all and smiles.

Though that then begs the question Cap'n are we going to go after the poor fellers who got carried off, or are we going to continue onto Chessford, leaving them to their fate?" "Mayhaps we can save some of them..."

You being to move the Rose in the direction Hess indicates, but you move slowly, even though the fog seems to be beginning to clear, vision is still impaired somewhat. However as you being to move further away the fog seems to thin some more.

After half an hour, perhaps a little longer, the fog clears nearly completely giving sight of a small, flat island, an atoll. You can approach by rowboat, but you cannot take the Rose up to the island itself.

The rowboat, thankfully, can fit eight comfortably, so fitting a couple more uncomfortably is a possibility. Hess nods when asked to come along.

"OF course! I wanna help my mates too... maybe make up for being a coward back there..." he gestures over his shoulder with his thumb. You all clamber into the rowboat, and begin rowing towards the island, leaving Ramsay in charge of the Rose

As you approach the island, it becomes a little clearer, it seems relatively featureless, a little outcropping here, a few trees there. Not too dissimilar to desert islands you've heard of in Pirate's tales, though perhaps a little large. It would probably not take more than forty minutes to walk the around the island.

Kiwina, Falco - Highlight to display spoiler: {There appears to be footprints here, possibly some humans, maybe a liontaur as well? It's hard to tell but they lead off onto the island proper, towards the nest. }

Hess shakes his head.

"Boat's not ours... but does look finely constructed! Far more than any boat I've ever seen... mayhaps there's something special about it which is why it's not broken?"

The boat is in surprisingly perfect condition, though it appears to have been here for some time, there is no rotting or damage to the wood at all, it looks as if it had just been made. Those of you sensitive to magic can feel it humming slightly.

You see fifteen harpies come charging towards you, the first one is dazzled, and he second closest one is immediately cut down and shot to pieces by the party, leaving only fourteen. The dazzled one and two more reach Rolth, and attack him, however only one of them hits dealing four damage, once they've struck, they immediately continue flying past and back up into the air.

Closer inspection on the harpies (which you all see clearly as they get close) is that they are just as unkempt and ragged as the ones who attacked the ship, with similarly frenzied eyes and erratic movements.

The harpies were flying in a V shape formation, the first three have just passed Rolth and flown back into the air, one of them being killed in the process.

The remainder are all within 30 feet of you, in 5 feet increments, spread backwards and outwards. There are 6 on each side, with two in the air.

You clash with the line of Harpies, spells firing off, attacks striking and Harpies being felled left and right. There is little undergrowth here, there are a few trees, but not much grass or plants or anything along those lines.

Mak's attacks quickly kill one with little mercy.

Kiwina's spell strikes another, causing it to loudly proclaim it's unhappiness.

Falco fires some arrows at the Harpies further away.

Elyas' spell manages to blind the three furthest away one the left side.

Rolth manages to kill the two that attacked him.

There are currently 11 Harpies remaining, five of which start singing! Everyone needs to make a DC 16 Will Save or be Captivated.

The other six all try to charge at and strike Rolth before flying back into the air, as they come past him they bash into him, buffeting him and injuring him for 18 points of damage.

There are six harpies now in the air, about 30 feet up directly above the party, and five more at ground level in front of the party (three on the left, all blinded, and two on the right.) the ones at ground level are about 20 to 30 feet away.

((Angus is free of the Captivation because of Rolth's Countersong from the previous round just FYI Scott))

Rolth manages to land several blows to one of the two Harpies flying by, and manages to kill it.

Mak manages to make one howl in pain and let out a pained screech.

Kiwina attacks and seriously injures the one unblinded harpy of the blinded three.

Falco lets off a couple of shots, aiming at the Harpy Mak had already injured, and manages to fell it.

Elyas fires of a spell, causing the smell of burned feathers to rise from on of the group that attacked Rolth first.

Tsak opens fire and injures on of the two remaining harpies that just attacked Rolth.

There are still the Three Blind Harpies (only one of which is still blinded, but we'll call them that for ease)

There are still two Flying Harpies. (These are the ones that first struck Rolth, and have no descended around Mak

There is only one remaining Ground Harpy. (The ones that most recently attacked Rolth)

Two of the now Not Blind Harpies Fly-by attack, one on Kiwina and the other on Falco, however they both miss and fly up into the air and out of melee reach.

The two Flying Harpies flyby attack Mak again, but only one of them hits him, for 6 damage, before again flying into the air.

The final remaining Ground Harpy attacks Rolth again, flying-by and does 7 damage.

There is still one Blinded Harpy at ground level five feet from Kiwina and Falco, two more of the Blinded Harpies are in the air. The Ground harpy and the Flying Harpies are all also in the air, about 10 feet up, and circling, letting out pained screams and moving erratically.

There is clearly something wrong with these creatures, but Rolth has no compunction with putting them down, given their evil natures and unprovoked attack on us. He leaps into the air to attack the remaining 'ground' harpy that is 10' off the ground.

Falco heals the party.

Rolth starts giving commands and looks for the previous party. Highlight to display spoiler: {The tracks lead towards the nest, but other than yourselves, it is quiet and still.}

Tsak - Highlight to display spoiler: {All is quiet and still.}

Mak prepares himself for more combat.

Kiwina offers out aid.

Elyas mentions that he's nearly out of spells for the day.

You begin to search the bodies and each other, the bodies look less like they were infected and more like they were ill kept, as if the harpies didn't care much for preening and ensuring they were eating well. Around one of the Harpies necks is an amulet that appears to be tentacles as if they were rising up to choke the wearer... it's somewhat unsettling, but has an odd magical tang too it.

DC 13 Intelligence - Highlight to display spoiler: {It's incredibly similar to the rock formation you saw in the ocean on your way here.}

Once you've cleared the bodies, and head to the nest (as the harpies have nothing of any value on them) you quickly spot more bodies, this time humanoid and wemic, and all partially eaten. Hess immediately stifles a cry.

"[b]That's him... that's Racksaw...[b]" He points to a body which is mostly eaten, but has some nice clothing on it. He lets out an anguished cry and kneels down next to the body.

Looking around you see there is loads of harpy guano here, and indeed even some eggs, however they've all been smashes open, and whatever was within has apparently been eaten... it sends a shiver down your spine.

Within the nest/cave area itself, you find -

3 Light Crossbows
22 Bolts
4 Cutlasses
5 Daggers
2 Longswords
Three potions that are familiar enough that you recognise them to me Light Healing potions (CLW)
Three potions of another type
Two potions of a third type
And another amulet which gives off a magical hum
75 gp, 150 sp.

There is on Racksaw's body +2 Dagger and an Onyx ring that seems to be made of arms coming out of a wave, it also has a slight magical feel to it.

The Harpy guano is also potentially valuable, for each pound you think you could sell it for 1gp, if you so wanted, and each person could probably collect two pounds an hour.

To the rest of the party, he says that he is not keen on hauling guano, but not to forget to include the other boat on the shoreline as part of the spoils while returning to the Rose. He's in favor of getting back to the ship before trying to identify the items they've found.

He's glad the eggs are already smashed.

Tsak looks around for anything else of use.

As some of you being to bury the bodies Hess speaks up. "Yeah... Racksaw was a good man... but like I said, he'd been acting strange recently. That strange necklace..." He indicates the tentacle one. "Was his. He wore it often, he liked the motif on it. As for Lian..." he now points to the wemic. "... he didn't have any family... he was a street urchin that signed up with us a long time ago... showed himself to be capable and skilled. He never knew if he was a member of any clan properly... never got the chance to find out. Such is life I guess..." He then continues to dig the hole to bury the various bodies. Once it's all done, he says a few words about missing them and hoping they'll be okay in wherever the hereafter is. He follows you back to the folding boat and your rowboat in silence, clearly contemplating things.

Looks like we also have three potions of water walking, a ring of swimming and an amulet of natural armor. we should of course take them all, but does anyone want one of these items now?

this tentacle pendant is one I don't understand, but it has some quite potent enchantment magic laid on it. I am not comfortable bringing it with us, it should be buried on this island. especially if it was possibly causing its previous owner to act strangely. i do not like enchantment magic one bit, and things like this just prove how dangerous it can be int he wrong hands.

How long did your captain have it, and where did he get it?"

For that matter, he'd like to know how long the change in Racksaw's mood had been going on.
But if Elyas thought the thing was cursed. . .

"Captain, I have to insist that we take every precaution with this thing. Hess told us that the last man to use this amulet had serious changes to his mood and actions, and it is imbued with enchantment magic. that doesn't sound like it was giving him powerful abilities, more that something was controlling him.

and with our recent run-ins with this tentacle motif, I am even more leery than i would normally be. if you want to keep it from falling into other hands, stick it in a lead-lined box and drop it to the bottom of the sea. or bury it. or smash it with a hammer.

or if you insist on taking it with us, still put it in a lead box and give it to me for safekeeping. I do not trust anyone else to resist the temptations of enchantment magic. I.... have experience dealing with invasions of the mind..

no disrespect Falco, but I think that I should be the one to carry this amulet. I have spent much time studying how to defeat enchantment magics. how many of you have ever been enchanted to do something against your will? how many of you have broken free of that enchantment? I have. it is not something i would want to repeat, and not something I will allow any of you to have to face if i can help it. it seems that the majority is in favor of taking this with us. "I'M A COWARD!! OKAY?!? IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR!! MY CAPTAIN AND HIS MEN ARE DEAD BECAUSE I DIDN'T FIGHT WITH THEM!!" he shouts as loud as he can, more out of fear and then relief washes over him, as if he's finally glad to have said it.

"I may not have been able to make a difference to the fight, and probably would have just died the same as everyone else... but I failed them once, I don't want to fail my captain again by not doing something proper for him with his favourite necklace... I want to try and honour him properly..."

He sits up with his head on his knees and you can hear him begin to weep.

"If you're going to kill me... get it over with..."

I don't trust anyone else to handle this, I barely trust myself. but at least I have magic specifically designed to prevent mental control through enchantment magic. what do you have? a hunch? bravado? if you do not trust your wizard to handle this bauble, I will once again state my opinion that it should be cast to the bottom of the sea in a lead box."

Rolth agrees with Elya.

Kiwina is aware that if Hess is innocent, his continued attacks -- although nonlethal -- would simply terrorize the man. He is also aware that everything they've seen points to Hess's colleagues attacking the harpies, which is not the story he told. Further, if Hess were lying, he could be one of those evil sea spirits Kiwina has heard of, working with the harpies and luring sailors to their dooms.

But Hess genuinely seems to be truthful...

"We could try to break the necklace. Then we don't have to worry about what it might do to us, or that it might be found" Kiwina watches Hess's reaction to this suggestion.

Tsak gets defensive with regards to his hole.

Mak sympathises with Hess

Elyas puts the necklace down, offering someone to take a swing.

Rolth uses Detect Magic - Highlight to display spoiler: {Hess and the rest of the party are non-magical, except where you'd expect the party to be magical, the necklace is very strongly magical, but unfortunately you cannot tell any more than it is of the Enchantment school.}

With the necklace on a rock, Hess stands up, a few bruises beginning to appear on his body.

"I'll try and rid us of it..." He confidently strides over to the necklace and raises his sword, bringing it down with his full weight and strength, immediately afterwards he drops the sword and starts shaking his hands, letting out little moans of pain, from the force going back into his arms from the blow.

The necklace is undamaged, the rock has quite a scratch on it, and the sword now has a slightly bent edge, it appears Hess swung with some considerable force, more than you might have expected from him.

Let's lock it in the chest, put the chest in Tsak's handy haversack, and give the key to Elyas. I scan us every morning with detect magic to see whether any enchantment has leaked out, and report to Captain Kiwina with any results. The chest can only be removed from the haversack and chest with Kiwina's approval, after consulting with all the Petals, and only in the presence of at least two of the Petals. This will ensure that compromise of one of us will not easily set free any malign magics. What do you guys think?"

The ship does appear to be in very good condition, as the crewmen have clearly been working on it the whole time you were gone and have managed to get in into a good enough condition to sail to port. He gives the order to raise anchor and continue on your heading, while he does so he asks a question of you all.

Elyas, Angus, and Mak were to head to the market and similar locals, so see what the common folk are saying. The rest of us were going to visit the Coalborns to see what insights they might have about local events and politics. No skulking around or lying about our mission, but not advertising it widely just yet. Perhaps we can all meet up at the Wanderer’s Roost in a few hours to compare notes?"

(OOC: for a refresher, check out the archive from about 29 Feb - 5 March. Mak had some info re the clans, and Rolth summed up the details were learned from the Duke’s people.)

Also, during the trip here, were we able to learn the activation word for the folding boat? With Elyas’ +10, several of us aiding another, and inspire competence, even a DC 30 isn’t that hard.
