The darkness that clouded your eyes and befuddled your mind clears as a bright spear of light pierces your vision. As your eyes focus and you shake the confusion from your thoughts, you find yourself standing in an open field. Behind you, a shimmer of translucent blue energy forms a wall from the ground and extending up high into the sky. Ahead, the grasses grow and thicken, until they obstruct your view. The only sounds are the wind and the chatter of small birds.

OOC: OOH! OOH! Still time for a Saturday Evening Post! Note that I fear my strategy will play havoc with your system of making Stealth checks to start encounters, seeing as "It's impossible to use Stealth while attacking, running, or charging."
John Dirt casts his Longstrider spell. His speed is now 70, and he cannot be tracked in his favored terrain. He also has Woodland Stride, so he can run free ... so he starts a-running!
"You can run for a number of rounds equal to your Constitution score, but after that you must make a DC 10 Constitution check to continue running. You must check again each round in which you continue to run, and the DC of this check increases by 1 for each check you have made. When you fail this check, you must stop running. A character who has run to his limit must rest for 1 minute (10 rounds) before running again. During a rest period, a character can move no faster than a normal move action."
John's checks to keep running are at +7 (+3 Con, +4 Endurance). On average, he should be able to run about 17 rounds and then have to rest (walk at one move action per round) for ten rounds. That's 17x280 + 10x70 = 5426 ft per 17 rounds.
He plans to explore by looping back and forth in semicircles from his starting point. He goes to 36B, 37B, 37C, 37D, 37E, 36E, 35E, 34E, 33E, 33D, 33C, 33B, 32B, 31B, 31C, 31D, 31E, 31F, 31G, 32G, 33G, 34G, 35G, 36G, 37G, 38G, 38G, 39F, 39E, 39D, 39C, etc.
That gets us going!
Perception checks as needed while running at base 15 +6 favored terrain = +21 Rolls ... 31, 23, 28, 31
Perception checks while walking during rest periods. For these ten round periods, John spends a move action walking each round and a move action for his Plains Mastery power to boost himself by +2.
Perception checks as needed while walking at base 15 +6 favored terrain +2 plains mastery = +23 Rolls ... 32, 33, 31, 36
Stealth checks while running: impossible

Should that be 5426 feet per 27 rounds? That would be 200.99 feet per round on average. For simplicity's sake (because I have six boards to track), let's say you can travel 7 squares per travel post using your method. As long as you have your spell active, you are running, have no difficult terrain, and you are not in combat, don't worry about endurance checks. I will update maps a little after noon.
John Dirt (Cayzle) Sunday December 7th, 2014 1:38:20 PM
"5426 feet per 27 rounds"
Oh yeah! of course! Sorry, too tired when I posted that.
But -- just to offer a random idea ... on any encounter, you might want to roll a d27. On a 1-10, I'm in a resting period, which means I'm making stealth checks and can only move 70 ft with one move action per round. On a 11-27, I'm running, no stealth, and can move freely.
Or just do not even worry about it. I'm good with whatever.
Thanks Tanner.

You have entered a forest. Temperate woodlands filled with a mix of old-growth deciduous and evergreen trees, thick foliage, and crisscrossing animal paths. You see no tributes or monsters.
John Dirt (Cayzle) Sunday December 7th, 2014 2:12:31 PM
OOC: Per email and for the record, accidently loaded the Gold Tap. Saw nothing. :-(
OOC: Huh! Coulda sworn 35C was a plains square initially ...
John Dirt loped through the forest, very glad he had found a woodlands so quickly. He kept his eyes open for oak. He needed oak more than magic items, allies, or enemies. Oak leaves let him cast his spells. Oak wood could be fashioned into cudgels, into a holy symbol, into other useful items.
When he finds one, he stocks up on leaves, so that he will be set for casting. He puts pinches of dirt in his pockets for Longstrider spells.
Then he gets to his crafting. He looks for solid and healthy oak wood, and then he casts two Wood Shape spells, making a wooden holy symbol and an oversized oaken club. The holy symbol is in the shape of a book.
He says a quick prayer of thanks to Bryson, god of walking in the woods, and he continues on his route.

John Dirt (Cayzle) Monday December 8th, 2014 12:18:34 AM No prob! Thanks Tanner! I'm just glad to be able to make my own weapon and holy symbol(s).
John Dirt finishes stowing his leaves, symbol, oversized club, and a few pinches of dirt. He sets off again, scouting as he did before, with his ground-covering gait, running, walking, running walking.

You see a tribute! To your west, flying about 60 feet in the air, is a half-elf male. He appears to be covered in some sort of armor. He sees you.
You are I38. He is G38. If you wish to engage in combat, you need to roll for initiative. If you desire communication, you will need to occupy the same square.
John Dirt (Cayzle) d20+9=18 ; d20+26=41 ; d20+15=29 ; Tuesday December 9th, 2014 1:13:42 PM
John's Initiative is 1d20 +3 dex +6 favored terrain. Roll is an 18. Distance from the other tribute is?
Looking into the sky, John swears softly but colorfully. "A flier! Just what I don't want to hit first."
If John is not in a "rest period," Deciding discretion is the better part, John turns on his heels and flees. He runs full out, 280 ft per round, directly away from the other tribute.
If John IS in a "rest period," and cannot run, John casts his Obscuring Mist and hides within the mist, not at the center of the spell. His plan is to sneak away, using stealth at -5 and moving at 65 per round, under the concealment of the trees and using his Forest Mastery for an extra +2.
=====
Stealth check as needed (at base +26) 41 ... then -5 for moving, +6 for favored terrain, +2 for forest mastery.
Perception check as needed (at base +15) 29 ... then +6 for favored terrain, +2 for forest mastery if not running.

ooc: The other tribute is about 6000' away (1 travel post before combat can be initiated, barring some ridiculous spell ranges). The "Encounter Distance" listed on the map key is when two tributes are in the same space, but he is flying up in the air and much more visible. You are not in a rest period. I will have you flee eastward, away from the tribute and the wall.
John Dirt (Cayzle) Tuesday December 9th, 2014 2:03:56 PM
Sweet, thanks!
That's what happens when both tributes are not even trying to be stealthy! :-)

Thanks!
Head Gamemaker Tanner Tuesday December 9th, 2014 11:02:47 PM
Despite your prodigious speed, the other tribute is simply far faster. He catches up to you within minutes, and dives to attack you with an eagle-like claw!
ooc: Post one combat post for tomorrow. The other tribute is attacking, and has beaten your initiative.
John Dirt (Cayzle) Wednesday December 10th, 2014 1:30:40 AM
Huh!
Okay, how fast was this person moving? Is it a humanoid or a bird? How does it have a claw?!
My AC is 18, so we'll see if he hits me.
Does he stop moving after the attack, or is he still moving past, like with Fly By Attack?
Head Gamemaker Tanner Wednesday December 10th, 2014 7:51:22 AM
ooc: Judging by how quickly he overcomes you, you estimate his flying base speed is 120ft per round.
He is a humanoid, covered from head to toe in a suit of nightmarish armor. The claw seems to form naturally from the armor he wears. He has a glowing rune in the middle of his forehead.
He stops moving when he attacks, so you are free to enter melee with him until he takes off again.
John Dirt (Cayzle) Wednesday December 10th, 2014 11:02:43 AM
Thanks Tanner! We'll see how his attack on me goes, and then I'll respond. However, right now my plan is ...
Rage as a free action. Enlarge as a swift action. Five ft step back to get out of his medium-size reach ... but he should still be in my 10 ft reach as a large biped. Grapple as a standard action. That's a base 1d20 +8 BAB +6 Str +1 size = 1d20+15. [Note that I have neither my bow nor my club in hand.]
Grapple provokes an AoO when I initiate it, but seeing as I am out of his reach, I'm hoping he cannot make one.
My hope is that his CMD is no higher than 23 to 28, which should mean I grapple him on a nat roll of 8 to 13. Maybe a 50-50 chance. My grapple damage as a large creature is 1d4+6. Once I try it and know his CMD, I'll have a better idea of what he is. And if I succeed and he does not break free, my +5 to maintaint he grapple will help!
HEY WAIT A MINUTE! He has a glowing rune on his head! This is an EFFING eidolon! Gosh darn it! Probably maxed out on Str, since he's a biped. Likely BAB is +8. Str is 20 minimum. Dex is 16 minimum. CMD is 10+8+6+3 = 27 or more. 28 if he is hasted. He may have the reach evolution. I need a 12 to grapple, minimum. This is not a fight I want. The summoner is still out there somewhere (though likely a bit away since he can't match this guy's speed). Ugh.
Well, we'll see how much I take on the claw attack. I'm guessing 1d4+8, most likely. Ugh.
Well, if he is charging me, using the charge action, then he HAS to attack as soon as he can. So if he has reach with that claw, then he has to stop at distance 10 and attack. What are the odds, given that he was chasing me, that he was able to catch up with just a move action and then a standard action to attack?
I'll try to tell if he was charging.
My own CMD is 10+8+6+3+1 = 28.
Ugh.
John Dirt (Cayzle) Wednesday December 10th, 2014 11:20:44 AM
Tanner, I'm trying to wrap my head around this encounter.
We're both running, say. He's running/flying at 120x4=480. I'm running at 70x4=280.
While we are running, we cannot attack.
So say he catches up to me while he is running. Say he is right over me, distance zero, and his move is done. He cannot attack because he is running.
Then it is my turn. I run 280 ft. Now we are 280 ft apart.
He can run and catch up easily, but since he is running he cannot attack.
He can charge, but only 120x2=240 ft, and he is still 40 ft away.
He can move and make a standard attack, but he can only move 120 ft, and is still 160 ft away.
If he were shooting something, that would work.
What should happen is that he runs right up next to me (distance zero), and then when I run, he gets an AoO because I am leaving his threatened space.
Every round, I can run, and every round he can catch up, but when I run, he gets that AoO.
If he has a 10 ft reach, he might get TWO AoOs (if he has combat reflexes) since I'll be travelling through two threatened squares. Right?
My only recourse is to enlarge myself before he arrives, and then as he approaches, I get an AoO of my own if my reach is longer than his.
OR the other option is to start rolling endurance checks to see who has to stop running first.
Hmmmm ...
Head Gamemaker Tanner d20+15=17 ; Wednesday December 10th, 2014 12:51:55 PM
ooc: Last night I posted, "He catches up to you within minutes, and dives to attack you with an eagle-like claw!" The other tribute had to spend one travel post to reach you, and me stating that he "dives to attack you" is my way of letting you know that combat has been initiated. Today, for his one combat post, he is diving/charging at you. Also, he won the initiative, and the Encounter Distance in a forest square is only 200ft. He can easily reach you with a charge. There is a bit of abstraction involved, so travel/chase is simultaneous until two tributes occupy the same space. Then they are at the listed Encounter Distance, and initiative takes over from there.
The tribute cries out haughtily, "I never seen a Half-Orc chicken out of a fight! Let's give the spectators what they expect to get!!" He lances you with a clawed talon [Hit AC 30, Damage 10]. You take a step back, growing in size and strength, and attempt to grapple [CMB total 17]. You are unsuccessful, but have some space between the two of you.
ooc: Next combat post is tomorrow. He has the initiative.
John Dirt (AC14, raging, enlarged; HP 103 of 113) (Cayzle) d20+21=32 ; d20+7=21 ; Wednesday December 10th, 2014 1:25:57 PM
Last round I had a move action I did not use. I note that I currently threaten no squares, seeing as I am unarmed and do not have a natural weapon or improved unarmed attack. So I'll draw my oversized club with my move action from last round ... if that is okay.
Okay, the encounter distance and all is fine. Thanks for explaining that, Tanner.
I thought I would get to know what happened before I committed to the grapple. So what you are saying is that my combat action comes after his, but I have to decide what to do before he acts? OK. Winning initiative is key!
I rolled an 18 for my initiative. What is his initiative?
Do I also get to know his CMD, please?
Do I get a sense of his reach, since he was charging?
When is my next combat action due?
My AC is base 10 -1 size +2 dex +5 armor -2 raging = 14. My CMD is base 10 +1 size +8 BAB +6 str +2 dex = 27
Do I think he can charge through trees flying in the forest? I can do that with Nature Stride. But if a tree is in the way, does that block his charge?
If he is above the treetops, then surely he can both run and charge, but can he charge a target on the ground among the trees?
What would it take for me to gain total cover/concealment in the forest, so that I can start using stealth?
And you said he was a half-elf? Do I think an eidolon would look like a half-elf? Rules say that eidolons look "The eidolon's physical appearance is up to the summoner, but it always appears as some sort of fantastical creature." A half-eld is not a fantastical creature. I'll use perception to beat his disguise check.
Perception (with +6 in favored terrain) 32
That's also to detect other creatures (summoner, summoned creatures) sneaking up. Or roll as many checks as you need.
I'll use Knowledge to tell what the heck this is. Natural? Half-elf? Etc. Know Nature check 21.
Head Gamemaker Tanner Wednesday December 10th, 2014 3:28:15 PM
ooc: Sure, you draw your greatclub.
Yes, winning initiative is key. If you are not sure about committing to an action, you might want to post two different actions and establish a contingency for which one to use. "I try to grapple him, unless he does [X], in which case I will blahblahblah..."
His initiative is 25.
His CMD is 28.
His reach is 5' right now.
Your next combat post is due tomorrow.
If you specifically state that you are going to duck behind a tree, then he would be unable to charge you. However, if you are just running, then he can follow the same path. There are no movement penalties in this forest, so your nature stride is not actually necessary.
While diagonal movement from a flying charge would requirement more movement, he was 200' away and can charge 240', so I judged he was fine in making a charge.
He is a half-elf. As I said, he is "covered head to toe in nightmarish armor." So how can he plainly be a half-elf, yet have a glowing rune on his forehead?

Oh I get it now!
"A synthesist summons the essence of a powerful outsider to meld with his own being. The synthesist wears the eidolon like translucent, living armor."
"Translucent," as in, I can see the summoner through the armor. Got it.

Yeah, I deduce this is a fight I cannot win. He has half again my raging hp, I'm guessing, with a godawful AC. I suspect I put out more damage on a hit, but he'll hit more often. My best bet is to use my stealth and get out. Live to fight another day. Maybe come back with allies.
So if he closes and attacks with a full attack, I'll eat the damage.
Then the enlarge ends (it only lasts a round). Large, I occupy four squares; back to medium, I choose to shrink down into a square more distant from him. That should put me out of reach. Then I cast Obscuring Mist. And then I use a move action to move away into the woods 35 ft away in a random direction, using stealth and trees for cover.

Revised Plan!
So the enemy likely closes and attacks with a full attack, I'll eat the damage. Or he does something else, I'll do the same no matter.
My turn starts. The enlarge ends (it only lasts a round). Large, I occupy four squares; back to medium, I choose to shrink down into a square more distant from him. That should put me out of reach. Then I cast Obscuring Mist.
Then, with stealth, I move five feet away and climb 10 ft up a tree! If I'm lucky, I'll stay undetected in the canopy, using branches for cover.
Stealth check base 10 ranks +3 class +2 dex +6 feat +4 forest mastery +6 favored terrain +5 forest bonus moving at half speed. = +36. ROLLS 45
My perception is base 10 +3 class +2 wis -5 penalty = +10 ROLLS 16
I need to roll a Climb check, at +15 ... ROLLS 35! Sweet!
Now, maybe he'll evo surge himself some blindsight and +8 on perception, but who knows? Maybe the cover of the trees plus total concealment plus the penalty on perception in forest plus my great roll will be enough to keep me unseen anyway. And a kindly DM might even give me a bonus for thinking of hiding up a tree! After all, that's what she did in the movie! :-)
With any luck, my own perception will give me a clue as to where he moves next round. And then I can stealth away 115 ft and get to better cover!

OOC: The +5 bonus to Stealth checks while moving at half speed through a forest is only while traveling. The forest is not dense enough to provide such a bonus at such a short distance. Sorry. Your total check is 40.
Head Gamemaker Tanner Friday December 12th, 2014 9:18:28 AM
Aaaaaand he rolled a 40 on his Perception check. He rolled a 19 with a +21 modifier. He sees you. Luckily, your Perception check is good enough to see him, and tree branches will keep him from being able to charge.
John Dirt (AC16, raging only; HP 93 of 113) (Cayzle) Friday December 12th, 2014 11:56:51 AM
Tanner, the mist provides total concealment more than 5 ft away. So he is five feet away in the mist when he saw me? Or did he dispel/blow away the mist? You said I see him, so one of those two has to be true, right?
Also, either he moved or he cast or both? Does my perception allow me to know?
Also, in your rules you said, "Forest (dark green) - Temperate woodlands filled with a mix of old-growth deciduous and evergreen trees, thick foliage, and criss-crossing animal paths. Perception: -5 penalty on ALL checks."
Did you factor that -5 in his check to percieve me?
John Dirt (AC16, raging only; HP 93 of 113) (Cayzle) Friday December 12th, 2014 12:18:59 PM
You said he can't charge, but charging is a full round action that requires, what, a 10 ft space to charge through? But if he would like to charge, he would have to have to see me, right? But 10 ft through the mist gives total cover. Unless he has blindsense, but then I could not see him, and you said I could ... so ... confused.
Unless he dispelled the mist as a quickened spell ... then saw me, and then wanted to charge ... ??
Head Gamemaker Tanner Friday December 12th, 2014 12:21:06 PM
ooc: Sorry, there was some communication difficulty with the other tribute. The Perception penalty, just like the Stealth bonus, only apply during travel posts for the purpose of initially locating a tribute or monster.
You cannot see the other tribute. He cannot see you. However, you get the feeling he might have heard you.
John Dirt (AC16, raging only; HP 93 of 113) (Cayzle) d20+28=36 ; Friday December 12th, 2014 12:35:35 PM
Okay, thanks Tanner! Really appreciate it.
John's action for this round ...
Stealthily climb down from this tree (using 20 ft of move), stealthily hustle 110 ft away into woods, look for a good place to hide.
Moving at that speed gives a -5 on stealth checks. Therefore check is at +32-5=+28.
If in this travel John gets within 5 ft in the mist, then note that he still has concelament, and thus a 20% miss chance. Hopefully that AoO will not stop John from his move away.
The all important Stealth check: a 36. With his +21, he'll need a raw 15 to beat that.
Please do note the standard -1 per 10 ft distance rule for perception. That might have kept him from sensing me last round, come to think of it! :-)
Thanks Tanner!

POSTING
If you are exploring, you will post twice per day. If you are speaking with another tribute, you will post twice per day. If you attempting a skill check against a tribute or monster, you will post twice per day. If you are in combat, you will post once per day.
TRIBUTES
The following is a brief description of the twelve tributes, noting their name, gender, and race.
1. Cadmus, male human. 2. Gorbaz Blackscale, male half-orc. 3. Zundarr, male dwarf. 4. Ula Giantbreaker, female human. 5. Garth Swiftfoot, male human. 6. Zyletheus Skyborn, male liontaur. 7. The Cornucopia will not play a role in this year's games. Rather, equipment may be gained in one of two ways. First, tributes are permitted to select two pieces of equipment prior to the beginning of the games. This equipment will be provided to you when you enter the game. Tributes may select from the following list. Selecting the same item twice is permitted. Mounts, animal companions, and familiars are considered class features, and will be found in the gamezone along with starting equipment.
+1 melee weapon +1 ranged weapon, with 20 ammunition masterwork thrown weapon (5) +1 armor (any) +1 shield (any) Spellbook, with component pouch (minimum number of spells by character level) Holy symbol Potion of cure serious wounds Flask of alchemist fire Thieves tools Trail rations (3 days)
Secondly, monstrous denizens inhabiting the gamezone will guard additional equipment. This equipment is more powerful than your starting equipment. These monsters are significantly less dangerous than your fellow tributes. There is one monster, however, who is rather challenging, and he likewise guards equipment more powerful than any to be gained by defeating other monsters in the gamezone.
GAMEZONE
The gamezone is divided into squares. These squares take approximately ten minutes for a typical tribute to traverse at walking speed (300'). You are capable of observing terrain within one square of your position, and your map will be updated as you travel. When traveling, Perception and Stealth checks will be required from every tribute for each square they enter. If a Perception check defeats a Stealth check, then an encounter has been initiated. Encounter distances for different terrains are noted in the Terrain section.
TERRAIN
There is a variety of terrain present in the gamezone, with associated effects upon travel, observation, and personal safety. Colors on the map denote the following:
Plains (light green) - Softly rolling hills of knee-high grass. Perception: No effect. Stealth: No effect, +5 bonus if lying prone. Encounter Distance: 1 square.
Forest (dark green) - Temperate woodlands filled with a mix of old-growth deciduous and evergreen trees, thick foliage, and criss-crossing animal paths. Perception: -5 penalty on all checks. Stealth: +5 bonus if moving at half speed. Total concealment if you are aware of another tribute, they are not aware of you, and you take no movement. Encounter Distance: 200 feet.
Swamp (brown) - A boggy mire of knee-deep water interspersed with mud and small hillocks of firm soil. A thick fog covers the area. Half movement at all times. Perception: -5 penalty on all checks. Stealth: No effect. Encounter Distance: 100 feet.
Water (blue) - Rivers and lakes cut through the gamezone. The waters flow lazily, and require a DC10 Swim check to cross. Perception: No effect. Stealth: No effect. Encounter Distance: 1 square on the surface, 15 feet under the surface.
Ash (gray) - Volcanic badlands, littered with boulders and crags. Survival checks to find food or water automatically fail. Perception: No effect. Stealth: +5 bonus if moving at half speed. Encounter Distance: 200 feet.
Pyroclastic Field (red) - Geysers of flame and soot dot this landscape. Survival checks to find food or water automatically fail. There is a 20% chance while traveling through this square (10% chance during combat rounds) that you are subjected to a gout of flame bursting from the ground. 2d6 fire damage, Reflex DC15 for half damage. Encounter Distance: 100 feet.
Cave (black) - Numerous caves dot the gamezone. What lies within is unknown.
MAGIC
A powerful barrier of abjuration magic envelopes the gamezone, blocking any attempts at dispelling or circumvention by characters of your level.
- No object, creature, or person may be conjured or teleported to outside of the barrier. - Creatures and objects may be summoned or conjured from outside of the barrier to the inside without difficulty. - You cannot ascend more than 60 feet above the ground. Please note that creatures or characters flying at 60 feet are able to observe 2 squares while exploring rather than 1 square. - You cannot descend more than 60 feet below the ground.
TRACKING
Successful use of the Survival skill and Track feat will provide bonuses to Perception checks to locate other tributes.

1. Roll your HP, if you have not already done so. 2. Choose your equipment, per the rules above. 3. Here is your map.
As her vision returns, Sesha hisses at the bright light. Her sensitive eyes always took a moment of adjusting. She takes a deep breath, and looks around. She considers her map, and ponders what the other lesser tributes might do.
"The center is where things will happen. We don't want to go there without any friends, do we?"
Sesha figures heading west is as good as any to find a friend before everything boils down to a glorious, bloody end.
"As long as their blood sates my thirst Sesha, I'll follow you anywhere."
She grins at the voice of her spirit companion in her head. A fierce little knife, was he.

Sesha continues walking.
She never thought things would be immediately exciting, and after ten minutes of stalking through the plains, she realizes that if her guess on tributes pushing to the middle is correct, her goal is to come up behind one of the others, preferably after they are weakened.
"You still do not trust the gifts of Ga'al? Why settle on a weakened pawn?"
"Because, my vicious companion, I do not trust any plan to work all the time, every time. That Lord Ga'al can bless me with Domination spells so easily is a great boon, but the price of that boon is the Domination is easier to throw off. It's a diluted spell."
She shrugs.
"If I toss it on a raging Liontaur, and it fails, I would rather him be half-dead already."
She continues to stick to cover. It occurs to her she has heard birds. It's possible she might not be in a place with prey later. She adjusts the 5 masterwork nets and Holy symbol of Ga'al she selected as her equipment, and stops moving for a moment, just long enough to secure some basics.

You continue your journey southwest. Your diligence is rewarded, and you find two days' worth of food! You also easily find a gnarled stick that can serve as the handle of a serviceable broom. You easily weave as you walk through the tall grass and have a crude, but workable broom.
You still see nothing untoward, but a glimmer on the horizon suggests the grasslands may be fading.
Food secured, Sesha is curious about the glimmer ahead.
"I don't quite think it's wise to fly just yet. There's too many people who could see us still."
She wouldn't be ready to start making serious moves until the cannons signaling the fall of other tributes had rang a few times. Still, she would need to keep progressing. Game masters had a terrible reputation for inspiring boring tributes.
"West it is, my deadly little friends."
She casts a number of smaller spells, ones that likely would need to be refreshed, before moving directly to the west. Before stalking off, she frowns at the slippery ley lines in this place.

Your spells are successfully cast. When detecting magic, you are momentarily dizzy with the sensation of overwhelming conjuration and transmutation magic. Oddly, it is both powerful and incredibly distant. Like a major artifact blocked by a thin sheet of lead. You surmise this gamezone is a powerful demiplane and radiates magic throughout its construction.
The shine on the horizon stays fixed in the south, just beyond sight.

Sesha tries to get a fix on the time of day.
"Perhaps it would be safest to rest until night time? My eyes are made for it, and other may very well be sleeping through it. Either way, the Humans and Taurs will be disadvantaged. I can't remember if there's any rules or code that suggests our battles be fought during the day."
Sesha focuses her magic to do her will, and finds that here at least, the Ley Lines are kind to her. She focuses on finding, and then ripping from it's rest, the ghost of a drow cleric of Serenbeth.
"Guard me here. I am starting a long spell, and require your assistance."

Flying overhead, you circle cautiously over the lone figure. You see that it is undead, like a shambling zombie but bloated and sallow from the water. It's eyes burn a lazy red. You identify the creature as a draugr. It stands in knee-deep, murky water.

Next to the draugr (3 feet away) on a flat stone is a leather satchel. It is brand new, bulging, and has a pretty red ribbon bow tied to the clasp.

You open the satchel and inside you find a bedroll, a one-person tent, a potion, and finely-made sling.

Sesha happily puts the satchel on and continues westwards.
"Well, if anything, maybe it's something I can trade. The potion is great too."
She keeps watching the water. She had no expectations of finding another tribute, even at this speed. What she did hope to find, was some proof a tribute had crossed her path heading center, so she could come up from behind.

You fly westward, soaring above the ground with the ease of magic. You leave the draugr far behind.
But... what's this? Ahead of you, to the west... there is another person! As you fly closer, you see it is a rather large person, with horns. A minotaur! He carries a greatclub and is making his way east through the grass.
Sesha raises a curious brow. If ever there was a worthy pet, this might be it! There was but one Minotaur among the tributes, and it was named Baz, if she recalled correctly.
Judging from the club, he was likely a fighter of some kind. If she was going to bind someone to her will, nothing other than the big and the dumbest would do. Still, she needed to know more about him.
She starts by refreshing her cantrips, then observes from hiding at ground level, as best as she can, until he is in *encounter range!*

Sesha frowns, as blood pours from her nose. What was with this woman? She again feels the compulsion to flee, but stands her ground for a more ordered retreat.
**Things Sesha is assuming**
The woman is wearing armor, but has no shield or weapon drawn. The woman has darkvision of some kind. The lemure is under the womans control. That the DM will inform Sesha of magical aura's, apparent with Detect Magic.
Sesha sweeps back 60 feet, still riding her broom. With no weapon drawn, she isn't worried about whether or not the other woman can hit her as she backs away, since she isn't immediately threatened.
Considering the armor, the woman would have to charge her to even make an attack, which meant lowering her defenses, even for a moment. Plus, she was on the roof, of all places. Magic was obviously a thing.
Sesha strains to notice any other important details. Spell component pouch? Is there a displayed holy symbol? A sheathed weapon?
Perception: 28 (18+10, not +20)
Either way, this woman was either human or poly morphed. Sesha would know this fact. She casts dispel magic, targeting any existing visual spell effects . If one does not exist, Sesha figures the dispel magic will hit the highest level spell it can.
Dispel Magic: Dispels the highest in effect spell up to 7th level. (11 + CL. If full Antipaladin that's CL 7. 18 = 1st, 19 = 2nd, 20 = 3rd, 21 = 4th, 22 = 5th, 23 = 6th, 24 = 7th.)

Your spell hits the human woman and her eyes flash briefly. "Gah!" You see her raise her arms reflexively in a defensive pose as you retreat swiftly to make some room. You hear her speak from down the corridor and around the corner, out of sight, "NOT. COOL. Balthamel! Reinforcements!"
Seconds later you hear two voices, the human woman and a grating, guttural, bellowing voice. They are both chanting words of magic. The human woman finishes her spell fairly quickly, but the dark voice continues chanting.

She squats down and pats the body on the head, comforting it happily.
"I am jealous of you too, Miss Boop. Or is it Artura? I like "Boop" better, to be honest. It's what you called me when we first met."
She nibbles on her own fingertip for a second.
"It makes sense we would meet like this. You were an anti-paladin. You lived for the joy and fear of combat, and relished the pain and anguish that others around you felt. I'm a rock, a witch of Ga'al. It's my calling to stay solid, and spread the word of submission to his will to others. There's no room for emotion when you live in his tenets."
She beams another smile, and points at her dimples.
"See? I have to try so hard just to even look like I'm alive."
Her eyes darken, and she draws a line through Artura's blood with her pinky finger.
"That's why you all have to die. If I feel nothing.. you feel nothing!"
Standing, she begins to whistle a light tune, and pats the dust and blood off her knees.
"Tribute Twitch! Where might you have gone, you naughty boy?"
Excited, Sesha collects the longsword and puts on the boots. She leaves the armor and the body where they lie for now. She might have a need for them later.

Sesha's arcane eye whizzes through the dark corridors. It discovers that Sesha is in the north end of a doughnut of corridors. A small branch goes north just ahead of her, but the branch to the east reveals an exit to back to the outside world (the red X).

Still on her Broom, Sesha raises herself up to sixty feet. She giggles to herself, and lets one hand stray from the broom, pushing against the wind.
"Stop pretending Sesha. It's important to know what you are."
With a sigh, the little witch grabs the broom again, and mumbles to herself.
"I know what I am, dagger. There's no harm in pretending to have fun, even if Ga'al has other plans for me. Besides, I'm not heart-seeded, nor am I a priest. I'm a siphon, a drain that sucks everything Ga'al despises away. I bring things closer to his perfect world. As long as I do that, who cares if I smile once in awhile?"
She waits a moment, but her spirit familiar is silent. Perhaps the blood of the anti-paladin was enough to keep him sated for awhile?
Sesha takes time to look through her surrounding again, looking for details that show a tribute had passed this way.

A brief suction tension in the air as pressure forces against your eardrums, followed by the deep rumblings of shifting earth and the cracking of breaking rock. Your gaze is drawn toward the east, where an enormous plume of gray-black smock billows into the sky. Red streaks of pyroclastic fire spray toward the heavens. Sesha lazily drifts forward. She wasn't quite sure what to think. A greatsword. Armor. She has to push down excitement bubbling up within her. The last thing she wants is for this to immediately turn violent.
She yawns loudly and stretches out lazily on her broom, sort of like a cat on a ledge. She peers down and waves at the tribute. In her mind, Stab-stab screams for blood.
"Oy!", she shouts. "Speak Elven? Undercommon?" She tries both languages she knows, then cocks her head curiously, like a pup.

"Hrormir Son of Hrorgar Summoned to the Court of Vjindak, Son of Vjinmore, King of Evensnow.
"Mighty caster of magic, I charge thee to go to Aelfendor, For its hoary Warriors do threaten my Land And bring forth their cousin Demons To terrify my People."
Hrormir Son of Hrorgar Heard the Words of Vjindak Evensnow. "By Icestaff, Surely I would help thee But I have already a Quest to drink Twelve Flagons of Mead in one Hour, And then to bed four Wenches, Twice each. So I must with grace decline."
The King he did not smile At Hrormir and his jolly Spirit. "By thine Honor Must thou aidest my Cause For must thou takest up the Sword Of thy Companion Darfang Who took the Quest and failed."
Hrormir laughed. "Now I know thou jest. My boon Mate Darfang wouldst not fail. There be no finer Bladesman. If thou chargest him, he wouldst not fall."
"I did not say he fell. He joined the Dark Kings of Aelfendor And by doing so dishonored Himself and thee, his Friend."
Hrormir could not believe the Words, And yet, he knew Eversnow Didst not lie. So for twenty Days and three rodeth he To the Land of Night, the Kingdom of Fear, Where the Peasants ever carried Candles Knowing what Evil awaiteth them Should they stray beyond the Glow. The Sovereigncy of three Dark Kings: Aelfendor.
There, Torch in Hand, didst Hrormir Pass through haunted Countryside And frightened Villages, And through the black Gates Of the blacker Castle of Aelfendor. The three Dark Kings didst sneer At the sight of mighty Hrormir And summoned they their Champion Darfang the Blade.
"My boon Companion!" Hrormir called in the Hall of Night. "I dare not trust my Eyes, For then I wouldst believe That thou hast joined with Evil, And turned thy Way from Honor And Brotherhood!"
"Hrormir!" Darfang the Blade didst cry. "If thou dost not go now, One of us must die, for I hate thee!" But Hrormir was battle ready, And in the echoing Halls of Night The Blade of Darfang And the Staff of Hrormir Didst strike again and yet again. Mighty Warriors and Mages both, The boon Companions now Foes, Shook Mundus with their War.
They might have fought for a Year If there were Sun in Aelfendor To mark Time, And either Hrormir or Darfang May verily have won. But Hrormir saweth through the Dark The Tears in the Eyes of his former Friend, And then he saweth the Shadow of Darfang Wert not his own. And so with Icestaff, he did strike Not Darfang, but his Shadow, which cried.
"Hold, Mortal Man!" The Shadow becameth the Hag, Bent and twisted, in her Cloak and Hood. From her faceless Shadows, she hissed. "Mortal Man called Hrormir The Soul of thy boon Companion Is my Plaything, But I will take thine in trade, For though ye both have strong Arms, Thou hast the more clever Mind Which my Sons the Dark Kings need For a Champion of Aelfendor."
Hrormir the brave didst not take a Breath Or pause before he boldly said. "Shadowy Hag, release Darfang, And thou mayst use me as thou will."
The Hag didst laugh and freed Darfang. "To save thine Honor this thou hast done, But now thou must be without Honor Mortal Man, as the Champion Of the Dark Kings, my Heirs of Gray Maybe, Thou must help them divide Aelfendor, And love me, Thy Shadowy Hag and thy Mistress well."
For his loss of Honor, And his dear Friend's Sacrifice, Noble Darfang prepared to take his Dagger And plunge it in his good Heart,
But Hrormir stayed his Brother's Hand and whispered. "No, boon Companion, Wait for me at the Village Banquet Hall." And then did Darfang the Blade leave the Castle While Hrormir took the withered Claw Of the Hag, and pressed it to his Lips. "Shadowy Hag, to thee I pledge To only honor thy black Words To turn my back on Truth To aid thy Dark Kings' Ambition To divide their Inheritance fairly To love thee To think thee beautiful."
Then to the Chamber in the Heart of Night Hrormir and the Hag did retire Kissed he there her wrinkled Lips And her wrinkled, sagging Breasts, For ten Days and Nights and three did Hrormir And his Icestaff Battle thus.
Then Sweet Kynareth blew honeyed Winds O'er the Hills and Forest Glens of Aelfendor, And the Caress of warm blooded Dibella Coaxed the Blossoms to wanton Display So that Aelfendor became a Garden Of all the Senses.
The frightened Servants of the Dark Kings Woke to find there was naught to fear And through the once dark Streets of the Village Came the Cries of Celebration. In the Banquet Hall of the Village Hrormir and his boon Companion Darfang Embraced and drank of rich Mead. The Shadowy Hag too was smiling, Sleeping still in her soft Bed, Until the morning Sun touched her naked Face And she awoke, and saw All, And knew All saw her. And she cried out: "Mortal Man!"
Night fell fast upon the Land As the Hag flew into the Banquet Hall Casting blackest Darkness in her Wake But all the Celebrants still could see Her Anger In her monstrous Face And they shook with Fear. The Hag had said the Kingdom was To be divided among her Heirs. But Aelfendor had been kept whole While her Children divided, Drawn and quartered. Hrormir was mightily amused.
He swallowed his Laughter In his Mead, For none should laugh outright At the Daedra Lord Nocturnal. Without her gray Cowl of shadowed Night, Her hideous Face forced the Moons To hide themselves.
Hrormir the mighty did not quail. "Wherest be thine Hood, shadowy hag?"
"Mortal Man hast taken it from me unaware. When I awoke, my Face unmasked, My Kingdom cast into the Light, My Dark King Heirs in Pieces cast, And here, my Champion smiles. Yet in truth, thou kept thy Promise truly, To never keep thy Promise true."
Hrormir Son of Hrorgar Bowed to the Hag, his Queen. "And evermore, 'Til thou releaseth me, will I serve thee so." "A clever Mind in a Champion Is a much overvalued Trait."
The Hag released Hrormir's Soul And he released her Hood. And so in the Light of darkest Dark, She left Aelfendor evermore. And after drinking twelve Flagons of Mead, And bedding four Wenches Twice each, Did Darfang return to Eversnow With Hrormir Son of Hrorgar."

"Once a young witch without a patron spirit found herself needing to cross a wide chasm with haste. She knelt and prayed for one whole day, begging a patron to aid her."
First came an old tree, rich in ancient power, but slow of foot and speed.
"Contract with me, and I can take you around the ends of the earth to the edge of this chasm. The pace is slow, but the result is assured."
The young witch refused, because time was of the essence. She prayed for an entire second day, and was approached by a rugged elemental.
"Contract with me. I can teach you to climb these chasms with great ease. You must do it yourself, as anything worth doing must be done yourself."
The young witch refused, because time was short and she wanted to be carried, not carry herself. She prayed for an entire third day, and was approached by a magnificent winged prince of demons.
"Form a contract with me young witch, and I shall soar across this chasm with you in my care, then release you to the other side."
The witch was reluctant.
"Can I trust you, she asked?"
"As much as one can trust a demon. I'll honor our contract and not lay claim to your soul until the day you die.", was the reply.
The girl climbed upon the demons back and they started their trip across the chasm. The wind was fierce, and the demon called out.
"Girl. You are hindering my wings. Crawl down lower to my waist."
The girl complied. Soon, the wind became more powerful.
"Girl. You are hindering my balance. Crawl under my chest, and let me carry you with my arms."
The girl complied, and was soon grasped in the powerful arms of the demon. As the neared the edge of the chasm, the winds died down. The demon carried her over to the other side, then dashed her against the rocks far below.
Twisted and bleeding, the girl cried out to the demon with her last breath.
"Why!?"
The Demon Prince replied. "Because I'm a demon, and I only promised to wait for your soul until the day you died."

The liontaur nocks an arrow and prepares to fire. The gnome flies into the air, and suddenly disappears. Ula draws her sword, and looks up expectantly at you. "Can you handle the little witch? "
Due to the lack of components, you surmise the gnome used a SLA to turn invisible.
Sesha Hp 120/88 AC 30/26/26 d100=92 ; Wednesday August 3rd, 2016 5:36:36 PM
Sesha has a few options at the moment, but most important was the shutting down of the Gnome. There were explanations for no components. She didn't use them herself. She had to hope Ula could handle sweet Twitch, the naughty Liontaur.
This was all so exciting, her dam of self control was quickly bubbling over.
"Sweet Twitch! My sweet sweet Twitch! You naughty boy! I heard your name called by the heavens! Did you hear mine? Did you? Once I heard it, I knew we had to meet!"
She looked at the bow with a bit of curiosity.
"Are you going to shoot us twitch? Is that how you killed Josiah? No.. wait.. you mauled him."
Sesha moves forward on her broom. She had a move of 60 last round, which kept her fairly even with Ula. She moves 60 again, putting her 180 feet away.
Sesha casts Hold Monster, at the Gnome.

Ula shrugs off Twitch's attempted grapple, but Ula and Sesha both can tell a successful one could do a lot of damage. Ula does wait to hear if you have any suggestions.
Ethyl seems to be unaffected by the blindness spell, given the speed that she drops her invisibility field and flies behind you. As you prepare your AoO, you get distracted... by Ethyl flying behind Twitch and towards the ground. The Ethyl that flies past you, using acrobatics to avoid your AoO, shrieks in delight as she prepares to fire a spell. The Ethyl behind Twitch also shrieks in delight, as she prepares to fire a spell.

ADM Melvin Wednesday August 10th, 2016 12:50:07 PM
Because Sesha can see Ethyl, she can see the spell as it is being cast, before she drops the invisibility (as a free action). Highlight to display spoiler: {Persistent Image, copy of self}. Sesha works backwards - she makes a copy of herself (that cannot be detected by perception) and then moves in two different directions, daring you and Ula to decide which is the real one.
(Ethyl just cast this image spell so you did hold the real one before.)
Sesha Hp 106/88 AC 30/26/26 Wednesday August 10th, 2016 2:03:48 PM

Dropped Invis: (Dispelling your own spell is actually a standard action.) Cast Persistent Image: (Standard Action - Programmed it to move.) Started another spell: (Standard action?)
If so, she may have done too much.
ADM Melvin Wednesday August 10th, 2016 2:51:24 PM
OOC: "started another spell" was flavor text to place pressure on the PCs, and was not meant to indicate any actual action besides hand movement. Dropping a spell, however, is a standard action.

"There's illusions at work Ula! You keep focusing on the Liontaur! If he can't grab you, you'll win!"
Mid rage, she wasn't sure if Ula was going to be more resistant or not to her spells, but she couldn't gamble. Right now, one of the gnomes, plus the Liontaur, were together.
"Hope this works."

Twitch attempts to grapple Ula again and fails, settling for a bite and a claw swipe. Ula is somewhat unsteady (half of her HP is gone) but still holding up. She seems unsure at the sudden displacement.

Outlined creatures do not benefit from the concealment normally provided by darkness (though a 2nd-level or higher magical darkness effect functions normally), blur, displacement, invisibility, or similar effects. The light is too dim to have any special effect on undead or dark-dwelling creatures vulnerable to light. The faerie fire can be blue, green, or violet, according to your choice at the time of casting. The faerie fire does not cause any harm to the objects or creatures thus outlined.

Sesha cannot tell much from this distance (150 feet, not yards, sorry, but still). She can tell the figure is smallish (dwarf?) and that he is standing on the ground. She can see some movement, like he (Zundarr? He's the only tribute left.) is waving around his arms. As far as Sesha can tell, this figure is real.
Recognizing a possible spell from a potential tribute, Sesha breaks off her attacks on Ethyl to attack Zundarr. But her leyline fails her.

As Ula grapples Ethyl, Ethyl's confusion causes her to strike at the nearest figure... Ula. Ethyl cannot cast spells while grappled (concentration check DC is insane) but she can fire a blinding ray, blinding Ula for one round.
Zundarr completes his full round action: summoning a large air elemental. For this round, he casts a Dispel Magic on Sesha, trying to dispel her flying (caster level check 19). The large air elemental charges Sesha and attacks (attack 26, 7 damage).

Ethyl, in her confusion, attempts to fire a blinding ray, and Ula thanks her stars that she had the foresight to grapple, the instant win tool of melees.
Ula, however, is unsure of what to do next. She cannot even punch, since she needs to maintain the grapple. And if she lets go, she loses her advantage. Sesha's guides her broom to the sleeping gnome. What was she? Wizard? Sorcerer? It didn't really matter much, not anymore.
"One last time, mistress?"
Stab-stab's query was strangely subdued. He had bathed in blood often this day, so perhaps he was finally feeling sated, for the first time that she could recall ever since binding him. She keeps a wary out eye for the summoned elemental. It's orders were to kill her, not to help the summoner. She didn't figure it would interfere, other than a clumsy punch.
"For today, my servant. The last time today. There's still a lot of places for us to go and see when these games are over. Our future seems bright, glory be to Ga'al.
She looks at the cluttered dead. Her brief ally, Ula, seared by painful magic. Twitch, the Liontaur she had longed to meet, dead by the womans sword. That strange druid, the second one she had killed today. So much carnage, she hoped whoever was watching was entertained.
If it looks like she wont have any interruptions, she casts both bulls strength and enlarge person. The final thrust needed to be worthy. If it seems impossible, she will make due with what she already has going for her.
She caresses the gnome's head for a second, the slides her dagger across her throat.
"Sleep tight, little one".

A red bloom appears across the gnome's neck. She wakes and sits up with a start, her breath coming in gurgled gasps as she tries desperately to stop the bleeding with her hands. But it cannot be stopped. Within seconds her limbs go slack, she slumps to the side, and her eyes roll back in her head. Her last breath escapes in a wheezing sigh as her body goes limp.

With jarring suddenness, a moaning shriek erupts from the sky, seeming to come out of thin air. The noise sounds five times, echoing out across the gamezone....
Followed by a blaring fanfare of triumph! The sound of an invisible grandstand band echoes out across the landscape, accompanied by the cheering and shouts of equally invisible throngs of jubilant onlookers. Cutting through the veritable roar is the polite, crisp female voice. ”Attention please. Attention please. Ladies and gentlemen, we are pleased to announce the valiant sacrifice of Tribute Ethyl Dreamweaver, whose throat has been slit by Tribute Sesha. Their names will be honored and remembered. The odds have favored Tribute Sesha, who stands victorious over all other Tributes. Her name will be inscribed upon the Wall of Honor to join the hosts of Tributes past. May she stand as an exemplar to future Tributes who contend for the honor of our Hosts.”
In a flash the gamezone disappears, sliding and running beneath your feet like water in a funnel. After several heartbeats floating in the void, you are shunted back into space. You are home. Checking the sky, you see that no time has passed since you were plucked by the Hosts to contend with the other Tributes. Indeed, even your clothes are mended and wounds healed without a visible scar. The only indication of your journey is a small mark on on the back of your right hand near your thumb. The sigil of a bird holding an arrow in its mouth, within a circle.
