Fang grabs something, to angry to notice what, and hurls it at the fleeing bard as she moves to catch up.

Fang launches a projectile from the ground (We will just say these are d6 damage sized), but it sails wide. Hin doesn't need to, but he smacks it out of the sky with a chop anyways.

"Throwing our toys now? Temper temper, little rat.". He sneers, and his otherwise handsome features contort with disdain. He hops in place once, then sprints forward. In a flash his hands are inside of fangs guard, grasping for her axe. He comes up empty handed.

Fang is figuring out some of Hins fighting style. She's determined his AC is 26, but he can boost it with ki to a 30. Further, he has improved disarm, and snatch arrows.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aexana, Rill, Jozhur and Bralin decide its time to check the Village. The team makes a mental note of the fact they haven't checked the Chancer's Pavillion, either.

It doesn't take much investigating here find that people are already aware of Hans' disappearance. He is well liked by the other athletes and contenders, and people seem concerned that such a central figure to one of the teams could have gone missing. "Try the Saddle.", suggests a worried looking young woman. "People saw the rest of his team there asking questions." The Saddle it would seem, is an Inn set up in the area for the use of the athletes to engage in flirting and other private engagements.

Tahni gives a slight groan. That's the tactic that Tahni was worried about. Hin can safely keep disarming Fang, and what's more, she can't throw anything at him. If she's to beat him it will need to be with her bare hands. Knowing Fang, she might actually enjoying ripping Hin to shreds with her claws.

She waits to see how Fang responds.

As we head to the Saddle, he will see if he senses any outsiders or constructs in the vicinity, and looks to see if any in the Saddle are undead. He will share what he learns with his friends.

Fang wastes no time, leaping into combat with her weapon. She scores multiple wounds on the monk, who seems to be suddenly concerned at fangs prowess as a fighter. With wary eyes, he launches into a fierce counter of maneuvers and strikes, his hands glowing and infused with ki.

His first attack is again, a grab at Fangs weapon. This time, he succeeds, (CMB 39). He then unleashes a series of kicks and strikes, and Fang again feels strange sensations in her body. (Fang, save vs stun. Fort dc 23)

He drops the axe in a space behind him.

Tahni and Terser keep an eye on Fang and her fight. Things seem to have been going well for fang, but how she responds to losing her weapon is important.

Those at the Saddle take in their surroundings. The Inn is large and well supplied with creature comforts of all kinds, for all sizes of adventurer. It seems like they really tried to make the place hospitable to everyone big and small.

The central living space is mostly full, a small crowd of people are waiting to talk to the rest of Dragon Sound, who are all here, save for Han Valen. There is a general feeling of concern, and talking to people gives the impression of genuine concern. Half dragon or not, Han is a well liked individual, and popular among the other athletes here. His vanishing has gotten some people worried for his safety, and perhaps their own.

Sir Elton, a half elf who was introduced to you as one of their group from earlier, notices you and quickly alerts the others. He asks the nucleus of the crowd, all women, to hold for just a moment. The group, consisting of two human females, a halfling female, and a pair of dwarven twins seem to agree. "Hail! Dragons! Please tell me the fates are smiling, and you've come to help us find our dear Han?"

Fang shrugs off the stunning blow (save of 40), but she has little choice but to pursue her weapon as she is no match for the monk unarmed. Luckily he didn't hold onto it, she doubted she could get it back if he did. She moves around him into the fire area and scoops it up. (I believe that's a move to get in position and a move to pick it up then).

Since the Saddle is set up to allow for private meetings, Rill will ask the proprietor to arrange a place where we can speak quietly with Dragon Sound away from the crowd. Fang moves to get her weapon. As she does so, she feels the rush of air made by a kick that barely missed her.

Again, Hins focus is on disarming Fang, and he makes several such maneuvers until he finally takes her weapon away. It takes a few attempts before he finally snatches it, and once again drops it behind him. He sneers. "Fight me with tooth and claw, hideous vermin. Weapons are for the noble races." The rest of Hins attacks impact or miss, but only one causes Fang any harm. (Hits AC 35 for 10 damage)

Hin takes 2 fire damage, and has 1 fire buildup.

Up in the stands, Tahni makes a valid point to Terser. The Sea Dragons might need to adjust some tactics. The benefit of the martial round so far, and the gauntlet has well, has been the preview of what's to come later in the event.
-----------------------------------

Rill finds nothing of note on his senses. Not even a construct guard. He, Aexana and Bralin take Dragon Sound aside and ask their questions.

"Weve searched around here, is what we've done. That and let the Grand Master of the Domi temple here know that he was missing. None of us here has access to much divination magic. Those women there, they all saw him last." Sir Elton sighs, and takes a chair. "No ransom letters, no sign of harm, no nothing. I could understand if it was a power play to get ahead in the games, but it seems early for that."

He hands Bralin a key.

"That's the key to a room upstairs. Han and the girls were using it. Feel free to go check it out. I won't say anything to the girls until you do, but I don't think any of them are capable of kidnapping someone of Hans status." Elton is quiet for a moment, before looking up at Rill. "Please find Han. He's the heart of our group. Find him, and we will owe you any one favor you ask. We would even drop from the tournament, should you wish. Just please find our friend."

The dwarf climbs the stairs, wondering at his own words.
Mayhap this is the purpose? To ruin the tournament? Who would want that? he wonders to the Dragons.

At the room, he hands Jozhur the key. The man is decidedly better at getting into places without ruining evidence or setting off a trap.

Once the door is opened, he observes what he can of the inside while waiting for an all-clear.

Funny you should ask who would want to ruin the tournament, Bralin. I was commenting earlier on my own dislike for this whole event. But going so far as actually abducting powerful people is a pretty extreme response to the Chancer's event. I wonder what's really going on here? Fangs blow slices into the monk cleanly, scoring another gushing wound. Again, he missed her as she went for her ax. With a snarl, he again tries to disarm Fang. He finally scores her weapon, then continues his routine, hitting nothing but air. This time, he keeps the axe, and holds it up high like he's playing a casual game of keepaway.

"No! Animals don't get weapons! They have tooth and claw! Anything else is reserved for their betters!"

Fang is suddenly aware of a chorus of boos and jeers from the crowd. Even Kozy is letting Hin have it. A chant of "Put the jerk in the dirt!" rise up, led by the Fangs of the Beast, who are all glaring daggers at Hin. Mint's icy cold glare speaks volumes.

Fang takes 4 shock damage and has 1 shock buildup.
Hin takes 1 fire damage and 1 shock damage and has 1 fire and 1 shock buildup.

Tahni and Terser are learning more and more about Hin. They've learned he's a hideous person, and they've learned quite a bit about his fighting style.

Tahni and Terser: Know Local or Perception. This is a scaling DC, the higher you score, the more you learn.

In the rooms of The Saddle, Jozhur finds no traps. He opens the lock and pushes into the room. Rill and Aexana figure one of two reasons are likely behind the kidnapping. Someone is trying to stall the tournament that the Dragons have been told must be completed, or someone is trying to slander the Dragons specifically.

The Room itself is grand and spectacular. There's furs on the floor, decorations on the walls, a magical fireplace that turns on and off at request, and a very large comfortable looking bed. The bed is disheveled, but there's nothing broken and no blood in view. If there was a struggle here, it wasn't violent enough to leave any tell-tale signs.

Hin takes 5 damage from the silver mist and loses all buidlup.

Terser and Tahni compare notes. If Fang doesn't turn this around soon, Terser might face this man later. They recognize much of the same basic training techniques that Grandpaw employed, with the additional talents of monastic styles. Together they figure out his combinations of classes and levels. He is a 16 monk, warrior 4 with the following feats. (Combat Reflexes, Deflect Arrows, Dodge, Improved Disarm, Improved Unarmed Strike, Power Attack, Snatch Arrows, Stunning Fist, Improved Stunning Fist, Extra Ki, Iron Will, Great Fortitude, Lightning Reflexes)

In the room, Aexana, Bralin, Rill and Jozhur consider the scroll. Aexana suggests it was hidden in plain sight for a reason, and the reason might be themselves.

Jozhurs skillful appraisal of the scroll finds it trap-less. (Dm roll, you did fine).

Does someone open the scroll?

Back in the arena.. the crowd is screaming its displeasure for Hin, who is showboating recklessly while Fang fights through a sudden heart attack!

From the stands, Fang hears a shrill voice cry out, choked with sadness and anger.

"Finish him sister! Show me that YOU are the real Fang! Wipe this hideous blot from the arena!"

For 1 round, Fang has a +2 circumstance bonus to hit and damage.

Fang is unimpressed by the palm effect (she has +23 and I don't think saves fail on a nat one. Still, 33 save). He has however manage to hit her pretty hard this round. Abandoning her grappling idea she just tears at him with fang and claw very effectively in fact.

(She does have improved unarmed strike so does not provoke AoO. Claws are just normal unarmed attacks, bite is from her race and counts as a secondary attack)

She suspects the latter, but the way Hin acts you just can't be sure. Tahni looks around and tries to find Heather to find out. If this fight has somehow turned out to be lethal, then Fang should expect some backup to join her.

OOC: Saves do indeed always fail on a nat 1, but you didn't get that so no worries.

Fang takes Hin's advice and attacks like an animal. Turns out, that was good advice.

Her claws rake Hin's chest twice. On the third swipe, she feels her claws begin to tear into his neck, only to pass through harmlessly on what should have been a killing blow. Any confusion she may have is put to rest when a loud gong indicates the match is over. The gas disapates quickly and harmlessly.

The crowd immediately erupts as what was a close match is decided so shockingly. It takes Hin a moment to process what just happened, and he is not very happy about it. There's not much worse in this world than losing after showboating in front of such a huge crowd. Try not to feel too sorry for him; he would not have won graciously. In the end, Fang was just too stubborn to go down despite the impressive damage Hin dished out.

Hin, to his credit, realizes there's nothing he can say to save face at this point. He takes a deep breath, lets out a frustrated sigh, and nods curtly to Fang before stalking out of the arena in a huff.

"WHAT A FINISH!" comes Kozy's voice booming out over the crowd. "Is there anyone out there who can challenge these Dragons?" It's a fair question. Is there?

Fang has a moment to wave at the crowd if she's so inclined before Heather appears from a doorway wearing a smile. Fang's exit is clear, but no one's rushing her.

***

Terser starts to wonder who he'll have to fight, but Fang settles that. Tahni wonders what happens with death attacks like Hin's quivering palm. Does the Chancer's field prevent those deaths too? It's a good question, but she'll have to do some asking around to find out.

Everyone else is super interested in this scroll, so Jozhur opens it up. There's only one thing written on it:

Depth:, 15,235 ft.

...huh? Rill doesn't detect any magic on it other than the lingering invisibility.

Terser congratulates Fang on a job well done. Fang, to her credit, bows and is magnanimus in victory. Back together, Tahni heals her up most of the way. She's still a little bruised from the bludgeoning Hin gave her, but nothing she can't ignore.

Tahni wants to find Heather, so it's super convienent that she's standing right next to Fang. "That was a great finish there, Fang." Heather opines. "Not sure where that burst came from. You seemed almost subdued for a while. Glad you came out ahead."

Tahni has some questions for Heather. Your next matches are coming up later today. Since we can heal everyone up and we don't need to let magic come back, we smush as many martial matches in a day as we can." She pulls a clipboard out from what must be an extra-dimensional pocket. Terser is up next from your group, against Tencent from The Last Whisper." She also asks about death magic. "Same as what happens when someone's bludgeoned to death. The magic senses impending death, and stops it." She shrugs. "Sorry I don't know more about how it works. Above my pay grade, which is saying something." She's not bragging, just stating a fact.

Meanwhile, the rest of our heroes have been given a depth about 3 miles below the surface. Rill figures there will be more scrolls giving other location data. Aexana decides to head to the last place Bezos was seen.

Jozhur's inspection turns up nothing useful. Pity...

The pavillion itself is a massive collection of fine tents, small barricades, books, logs, and all manner of shows of wealth. Anywhere money could be wasted, it has been. There's diamond crusted pens, golden paper weights, silvered ink pots, and even a bizarre statue made from a fish dipped in gold.

There's no sign of struggle here either, much like in the room at the saddle. Also like at the saddle, there's another Vellum scroll hidden from view, tucked away in a brace in the corner of the tent.

Bralins question is answered by a teary Kate. "Here. He was supposed to come watch some of the night games, but he never arrived. No one saw him after." when Aexana comforts her, she blubbers a bit more, and then excuses herself from the pavilion in a flurry of servants and swishy dresses.

(Note, there's some confusion here, as I accidentally deviated from the module earlier in the run. Bezos was last seen in the pavilion, a group of palatial tents where you are now. The earlier questions asked to the 1%'ers and Chancers was upstairs in their viewing booth, kind of a private suite in the arena. The pavilion is outside and not far from the arena.)

------------

In the arena, those still there are suddenly a bit distant from friends. A quick conversation over the consortium rings would clear that up. There's three first round battles remaining, followed by a slight break before the beginning of round two. The Dragons ringside have the option of observing the fights left on the docket, or joining their companions.

Gort and Runt, Khale and Bokkun, and Claw and Tasin are the remaining round one matches. Gort and Runt will take the arena soon, and Gort is a favorite by 2 to 1 odds. (A 1,000 gold bet on Gort wins 500 extra gold. A 1,000 gold bet on Runt wins 2000 extra gold.)

The remaining Sapphire Seven were quite clear with the Grand Master that they could be found on the ship, or in the arena, and nowhere in between.

There are remaining matches, but there's quite some time before they kick off.

When they find their way to the docking skiffs, they are pleasantly greeted by a young halfling. "Hello Good Dragons!", he says. "I was told to expect you. How may I help you?"

Tahni, Terser, and Fang continue with the halfling for a moment more. Tahni's initial impression is spot on. "I was until one of my team members went missing! At the mention of a scroll, the halfling looks genuinely confused. His answer is slow, and a little sarcastic. "Nooo scrolls here. Fresh out. I must have left all my invisible scrolls in my other jacket." He grins at his own joke. "I assume you want my fighters? I'm not a Fist member, so even though I've guided that lousy Seven around this place all weekend, they won't let me on board. They did tell me you would be coming, and if I wanted to be useful, I'd wait for you."

He pulls a small rod from a pouch on his belt, much like Heathers, and presses a button. It hovers in front of him, and through it he communicates to some person on the other side that you have arrived. It doesn't take long for a small skiff to come into view from the Contract, with Knight Captain Elhonna.

She motions to you to get on the craft, but her welcome is somewhat thin. "Hello Dragons. Please allow me to escort you to our ship. I'll ask that you say nothing until such time that I indicate it is safe to do so." She offers out a strong and firm hand to help anyone who needs it onto the skiff.

The DM assumed that something is said the Knight Captain Elhonna. The skiff waits for the whole team.

She leads the group alongside the ship, where sailors connect chains and hoist it up to the main decks.

The ship itself is crawling with troops, guards, and sentries all seemingly on high alert. At each of the waystations, or basically any change of deck level or ship section, Elhonna herself is challenged for a password. "I know the security might seem ridiculous, but please bear with us."

Soon after, everyone is sat down for refreshments and tea. The room is fairly large, luxurious even given how much space it takes up in the ships mid decks. Then again, with as much focus as the Mailed Fist places on contracts and negotiations, it sort of makes sense.

In addition to Elhonna, Urlryn, Tora, Arum and Marshall are all present. Urlryn as usual, sits alone. She's got open seats on either side. She shoots Jozhur a glance that's either an invitation, or simple study of what he plans to do.

Once everyone is seated, Elhonna retrieves a small magical disk from her person, and places it on the table. She taps it once, then states. "I am Knight-Captain Elhonna, in employ of the Mailed Fist. I am here to discuss the disappearance of Color-Sergeant Crall." When she finishes speaking, the disk flashes blue, and then it is passed to the next member of the Mailed Fist. Each of them repeats the same phrase, more or less, except they say they are there on the orders of the Knight-Captain, rather than wanting to discuss Crall.

Soon, it's Bralins turn.

He passes the disk along. As he does so he looks around the room to see if any are undead here. He also reaches out with his senses to see if there are any outsiders or constructs in the vicinity.

(Sorry to railroad, but history tells me the group does better the earlier my posts are)

Rill's sensory abilities make their way around the room. He detects no constructs, no outsiders, and no undead. Of particular note however, is Urlryn. When looking through the lens of his Deathwatch spell, she simply does not register at all.

----------------

One by one the disk is passed around the table. Each times its bearer finishes speaking, the light glows again. Finally, once all present have had their turn, Knight Captain Elhonna seems to relax.

"Forgive me dragons, but we can no longer trust in the security of our ship. We were...demoralized here. An enemy walked right into the middle of us, took one of our own, and there was nothing we could do. We've raised security measures in accordance with Mailed Fist doctrines, and thus the lie detector. If one of you were in disguise, or not what you seemed, then it would have let us know." She frowns. "I hope."

Her frustrations are temporarily forgotten when the door opens, and Hin enters the room. He is shirtless, and towling off. His injuries appear to have been healed. He considers the dragons for a moment, then sits down and says nothing. He motions for the disk, speaks into it, then tosses it back to the Knight Captain, who resumes talking.

"Well, its good to know you all came to help. In fact, I was anticipating it a little. Tell me, have you learned anything at all about the missing people?"

He paused a moment at Elhonna's question. Are we assuming we can trust the Seven fully?. If no one objects, he produces the two scrolls they found.

Rill smiles as he inclines his head toward the Knight Captain. "It seems we will have to trust each other if we are to find Crall and the others. Please tell us what you know about his disappearance. Also, have you come across a small, transparent scroll? We found such at the site of two other disappearances.

Can you trust the Sapphire Seven?

The question is asked among the Sea Dragons, and it is decided that yes, you can. After all, as Tahni remarks, they are probably the most honorable team you have met so far. Jozhur has kindled something akin to acceptance with Urlryn, and Rill is also willing to take that leap.

He and Jozhur share the information on the groups scrolls.

----------------------------------

Knight-Captain Elhonna considers the information for a moment, then retrieves a scroll from her person.

"Urlryn found this one. It was invisible until touched, then its enchantment was lost. It just has a single message, 22:00 hours. If we can combine that with the information on your scrolls, it seems someone is expecting us. Whether they are expecting the Dragons, or all the teams, is another question."

Hin pipes up when Tahni mentions murder charges.  "They are probably one of the strongest teams here. Killing their captain is probably a good strategic move if you can do it without getting caught. Did you?"

Fang, Terser, and Bralin discuss motives. The idea of the Chancers being behind it are brought up, and there are varying opinions on that idea. Marshall, the one with the self cleaning robe, speaks up. "I agree with the idea that the Chancers couldn't pull this off. They probably don't have a reason to either. If team captains go missing, that makes betting pretty simple on a lot of fights."

---

When Rill asks for a private word with  Urlryn, everyone in the room visibly tenses. All except Hin, who laughs at Urlryn before slowly getting his humor under control. Urlryn herself makes a noise somewhere between a growl of frustration and a moan of despair. For a moment, Jozhur is pretty sure she reached out for his arm on reflex before gaining control of herself.

---

Elhonna motions to Arum, who clops forward and slides a bundle of papers in front of the dragons.  "Please read through this. It's a fairly standard Mailed Fist contract. We write them in pretty plain wording, so it all should be easy to understand." Her voice is pleasant, though insistent. She also appears to be under effects of a reduce person spell, to make her use of the ship more manageable. "I handle the legal matters of our unit, and at this point, some things need to be made official before our relationship can progress. The Fist requires us to require contracts for services given, or services received. Without one, our hands are tied."

----

The paper stack is a contract. Some parts of it get a bit wordy, but the basis of it is that the Mailed Fist will be officially hiring the Dragons to help with finding Crall. In return, the Sea Dragons are promised any one favor or assignment of equal or lesser danger or importance, to be weighed in merit by Knight Captain Elhonna or her acting representatives.

Its reads easy enough, but there is a strange part of the contract that is of note. In legal speak, it says the following.

-You cannot talk about anything you learn about the Sapphire Seven to anyone outside the Mailed Fist.
-You cannot use anything you learn about the Sapphire Seven to justify legal, bodily or spiritual harm against them, or anyone under their command, other than in normal competition as expected.
-The contract seems to concede this is very limiting, so it provides a concession. If anyone in the Sapphire Seven provokes you to the point of self defense, or threatens innocents under your protection, the first two points are null and void.

Rill gives Hin a flat look at his accusation, but otherwise lets it go. As for Urlryn's seeming concern, he simply says, "Lady Urlryn, there is merely a matter I would discuss with you in private out of respect. I trust you to bring along whomever you wish if you are uncomfortable. It is a request not a demand and I assure you that I mean you no ill will."

Along with the others, Rill will read through the contract, asking for clarifications here and there. But the limitations on our actions give him pause of concern.

"This is interesting. Now why would we agree so some sort of immunity for things we know nothing about, and why would you even ask? What if we learn that you keep slaves or that you prey upon the vulnerable? What is it that you've done that you even need immunity? Are Dragon groups so foreign to you that you do not understand what we stand for in the Wold? And more importantly, do you not wish our help in seeking Crall's safe return?

"Look, we have no quarrel with you. We came here to talk and to see if we can help. I can certainly agree to fairness and to deal directly with you regarding any concerns we may have."

As for the contract, the dwarf lets Rill take the lead.

And, as for his own thoughts.
We know what was on Crall's scroll. Should the Seven prove too difficult to deal with, we can just leave. Only The Whisper has what we still need.

Once someone translates the legalese for Fang she grunts. "You do realize that as Dragons all innocents are under our protection? It is literally our job description to protect innocents and right injustices.
Therefore this becomes null automatically should we find out you're doing something shady that could in anyway endanger innocents. Not that that matters as we'd do what we felt was right regardless of what papers you made us sign."

Tahni gives a grin back to Hin "Based on how the tournament is progressing so far, we haven't had a need to". Referencing, of course, Fang's victory in the arena.

The legal contract is interesting though.

"I think what my friends here are saying is that as members of the Dragon Consortium we have sworn an oath. We will stop evil wherever we find it. No matter the sacrifice. We help those who can't help themselves, rescue those unfairly held, and see that the old and handicapped are treated well.

You know all of this."

Tahni sits back in consideration.

"If the point of this contract is to hire us to find Crall, then it isn't needed. We don't hire out or take payment to do the right thing. We act in accordance with the oath we have taken."

She pauses to let it sink in.

"Provided we don't discover any evil actions or intent, then I think we can agree to be discreet"

Fang nods at Tahni's words. "That's the point I was trying to make. Either you trust us not to be blaggards and help you in good faith, or you think we somehow became Dragons despite being untrustworthy or are somehow impersonating a dragon group. A piece of paper won't change that - if we are who we appear to be we will act in good faith to help and protect anyone in danger that we can. If we are in fact untrustworthy rogues responsible for murdering the competition we would hardly care about breaking an agreement we signed."

To the others over the rings she comments, "I don't actually care if we sign this or some other agreement, the way I see it our oaths as dragons take precedence over any other agreement. If they're innocent of any wrong doing we can keep their silly secrets and contracts without difficulty, if they aren't then we deal with them regardless of any paperwork. If they understand that and still want us to sign because of their own rules and customs then why not?"

I agree with Fang. Even if we weren't doing this to help those kidnapped, we would still be doing it to clear our own names. When I look at Urluyn with Deathwatch, I get nothing. It's as if she's not alive, not dead and not undead. The spell is not a Divination spell, so it's not some sort of magic that blocks divination. And she doesn't register as a construct. I wonder if what we see isa projected image, which makes me wonder who or what she actually is.

And no Jozhur, I won't do the creepy eye thing. That would antagonize these folks, which I'd really rather avoid. I just wanted to ask her about it out of earshot of the rest of her group.

The Dragons, by and large, are not a fan of signing anything it seems. The more opposition there is, the deeper Elhonna's scowl. Hin chuckles, and stretches. "I told you they wouldn't go for it." Urlryn squeezes Jozhurs hand, but says nothing.

Sense Motive: 33, 47.

33: Highlight to display spoiler: { Hin, though seemingly non-chalant, seems more nervous the more opposition there is to signing. }

47: Highlight to display spoiler: { Urlryn seems outright terrified, and its very clear that Rill is the source of her distress. It probably has something to do with either Gargul, or his role as a soulseeker.}
--------------------------------------

The Dragons make it very clear that they won't allow legal documents to restrict their actions. When Rill asks whether or not Elhonna even wants their help, she clenches her jaw hard enough to crack a tooth. With practiced breathing, she stays in control of her tone.

"Of course we want your help. Of course we know how the Dragon Consortium works. You all seem to have the wrong idea about the purpose of the contract." She points to a couple sections, and explains. "YOU asked for our help, very early in these proceedings. That's not something we can just give on a whim."

She points again at the stacked papers.

"By you helping us, per the terms of the contract, it satisfies the "The Mailed Fist only acts with suitable compensation." part of our own ethos. That allows us to help you later, Master Rill and Master Tahni, with the hidden enemies you've been on about since we met you." With a sigh, she looks pointedly at Hin. "There's some things greater than money, but like you our lives are intertwined with our cause, The Mailed Fist. It might not be the Dragon Consortium, but its a mostly honorable organisation that provides a mostly honorable life. However, the recruiting requirements of the Mailed Fist... are not as .. picky as those of the Consortium." She looks hard at Rill. "You in particular have a reputation for analyzing everyone you meet. Some of us, either in this room or in my overall command, might not live up to your scrutiny."

She pushes the papers and the pen back to Rill, pointing again to the section that frees the Dragons from any secrecy or bindings on actions against the Fist.

"And I added this because of your particular duties as Dragons. If one of my soldiers does anything that endangers innocent people or yourselves, you are free to engage that person in whatever actions your justice demands. But I'll not have you share secrets you would learn here today to either imprison or harm someone under my care for something in their past, or in their base nature. Nor will I expose the private workings of my cherished Mailed Fist without some promise of secrecy."

Sense motive: DC 20 (Not bothering with spolers here.)

You get the understanding that on this, she is being truthful.

1. She does not seek to trap you with inaction, but rather elicit a promise to keep her squads secrets safe.

2. She seeks to prevent you from acting upon transgressions in her squads past, as opposed to some pre-plotted future scheme.

3. By contracting you to find Crall now in exchange for a promise of future service, she seeks to preemptively satisfy the Mailed Fists requirements for payments for services.

(Sense Motive 39)

"Look. Let's not get painted into a corner of our convictions when we really seem to want the same thing here - the return of those that seem to have been taken against their will.

"In the interest of trust, let me share a little about us. As you may know, I am a devout follower of Gargul opposed to the existence of constructs and undead. But I have learned that sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. Jozhur has an undead companion, and I accept this because I trust my friend Jozhur. We have learned that about half the monks here are constructs. And though Gargul has told me that I will eventually need to address this somehow, I know now is not the time and that when I do, I will need to approach this with a great deal of thoughtfulness and respect, for these monks serve Domi whom I know to be an goodly God. Even your own Hin decided that disgusting racist remarks where appropriate during his fight with Fang, and yet none of us raise a hand against this blaggard for his racial hatred.

"So, you see, we can be reasonable.

"I still don't understand why you need a contract to simply share what you know about Crall's disappearance. But I accept that you do. And a contract must be acceptable to both parties. So let me add this to our mutual contract."

Rill will write this into the contract: Nothing in this contract shall serve to promote or protect the furtherance of evil in the Wold. If it is found that the provisions of this contract are used to promote or protect, either through action or inaction, the furtherance of evil in the Wold, the contract shall be null and void for both parties."

"There. That should make this acceptable. And yeah, I know the 'furtherance of evil' could be interpreted a few ways. So the real question here is - do you trust us?"

If their answer is yes, Rill will sign the thing.

He will then look at Urlryn holding Jozhur's hand, "And please know that no friend of Jozhur will ever have anything to fear from me."

Tahni can read between the lines here. The Fist are wanting to cover their backsides because they're worried what will happen when the party finds out about some misdeeds that the Fist turned a blind eye to. She's also got a pretty good idea as to who would have committed those acts.

If Hin had robbed a store or two in his time? That's not too serious. Tahni can live with ignoring that. If Hin burned down an orphanage for blind puppies and got away with it? Well... that might be a problem.

"If there was a person in your care who had committed some very serious misdeed in their past, I'm sure we could all move past it provided they had faced justice for it. If they hadn't then I'm sure the Mailed Fist Code of Justice would see them promptly dealt with."

She's prepared to sign and act in good faith, although isn't quite so sure what she will do if she discovers some horrible truth about the Fist. Would she break the contract?

"Maybe in my past, I crushed an impertinent priest with my bare hands." His tone is joking, but his eyes are not. Only a well aimed trail-raisin, flicked at his forehead by Marshall, defuses his confrontational aura. "And in the not-so distant past, Fang knocked you out with HER bare hands. Quit scowling at everyone and calm down." Hin snorts and leans back in his chair, before popping the raisin in his mouth.

Jozhurs calm demeanor is the perfect panacea for Urlryn. Her skin is still cold as ice, but her aura seems suppressed for the moment. Once everyone starts signing the contract, she allows herself to be taken outside the main room. Tora, the dogfolk, gets up to follow, but a look from Marshall is enough to sit him back down. Hin laughs. "Such a loyal poochie. Its good that you know how to sit, otherwise I'd have to roll up a paper. Trust me Tora, those two are MADE for each other. You would just get in the way." Tora growls, but says nothing.

--Jozhur Only--

Outside the door, Urlryn looks either ashamed, or embarrassed."I'm sorry." She offers. "I'll be better soon, but Rill terrifies me. Can I trust his last words? He wouldn't harm me if we are friends? No matter what?"

She looks at Jozhur appraisingly.

Knight Captain Elhonna has Arum read through the added conditions. The lady-centaur shrugs, then
signs. So too, do Elhonna. Once all the Dragons are signed, Elhonna sends Arum out to make a copy.

"Good." she announces, then clasps her hands.

"We were in the middle of a strategy session. The Mailed Fist doesn't particularly care about the small events, but they expect us to be contenders in the final tournament. As such, you were our subject of discussion." She points to a bulkhead on the port side of the room. "Suddenly, there was this strange pressure, and the bulkhead just vanished. Water didn't pour in, air didn't cycle, it just went away. Before we could organize a defense, there was a mental attack." She frowns, recalling the experience.

"When we recovered from what Urlryn assumes was similar to Mass Hold Person spell, which also blinded, deafened, and stunned us, Crall was gone."

Hin laughs at this, elbowing Bralin. “Urlryns supposed to be immune to all of those. Some ace in the hole she is.”

Marshal pipes up. "We never saw the attacker, but his presence... was palpable and oppressive. Like an aura from a dragon.. not like.. you guys but a real dragon."

"Formidable magic indeed," he responds.
The dwarf thinks of denizens under the mountains who could wield such power, while his eyes flick inquiringly at Rill and Aex.

He most certainly wouldn't hurt anyone I care about. Just don't hurt us or anyone who doesn't deserve it and you will be fine." He reaches out and curiously touches Urlryn's icy arm as he tries to think of the right words to use, "In fact, he would actually feel very bad if he accidentally hurt you with his powers.

(I'm not sure what a trail-raisin is. I know what a road-apple is, so that makes me a little uncomfortable about just what they're flinging around.) :)

Rill looks at both Hin and Tora. "Relax Hin. Having died already you should know that death should be a learning experience. In fact, perhaps the next time you die I can help you out by infusing your soul into a weapon to be wielded by beast folk. It seems you have much to learn about them, and I think a few millennia serving them should do the trick."

Turning back to the attack against Crall, Rill gives some thought to what sort of being or spell could have this effect. Unfortunately, while he is wise he is not very learned. (Knowledge Religion 21, Knowledge Planes 7, Knowledge Arcane 11.)

"You know Tahni is the smart one here. Tahni - What do you think could have caused this, some sort of planar gate? And what manner of creature or creatures could so overhelm a group such as this? (Tahni has waaaay better knowledge skills than the rest of us.)

"Now Hin here is implying that Urlryn is some sort of construct, probably to provoke me, and that she should have been immune to this attack. Some clerics of Gargul can specialize in certain spells that can bypass a construct's immunity. Who or what else would have such power over constructs, because that is rare indeed. I will need to commune with my deity on this, but even Gargul is not omniscient, and those that sent us here were not able to see exactly why we needed to be here."

With Jozhur out of the room, Rill will reach out with the Status effect of the rings to make sure he knows where the rogue is and that he is well.

Ken E: The First Round, Arena Map

Bralin is unable to think of any aberrations or other typical dungeon denizens with a special ability like this one. Tahni asks some good questions.

"When we came back in control of ourselves, everything was as it should be. Urlryn checked for auras, but other than schools of magic, there wasn't much to discover. Conjuration and Transmutation were all over the place." Elhonna looks back towards the door and nods to Arum. The centaur opens it, and speaks to Jozhur and Urlryn. "You two might want to come back inside. They are talking about the spell, Ryn."

Urlryn nods and gives Jozhur a squeeze. "I appreciate you." With that, she leads him back inside. Her hand lingers on his until the last moment, then pulls away when they are in view of the others. His skin feels cool, where they touched.

Terser is certain that no animal is capable of such feats. Fang wracks her brain as well. All she can come up with though, is that a power or deity could easily do something of this level. Or perhaps a very very strong priest, stronger than Rill or herself.

Rill is briefly concerned about Marshal's choice of projectile. Reliving the event in his mind, it was probably a dried raisin. Most likely. Surely. Rill responds to one of Hin's many provocations. For a moment, Hin gives Rill an appraising glance.

Sense Motive: 25

Highlight to display spoiler: {He seems to be trying to figure out whether or not Rill could really do it.}

--------

He doesn't need to status Jozhur, as the rogue returns and in good health. Rill can't come up with anything further than what the others already have. He encourages Tahni to take a stab at it, then states his theory about constructs. Hin again busts out into laughter.

"Oh man. You are so close, but so far priest. It's true Urlryn isn't affected by that kind of stuff because she's an object. But she ain't a construct. She's a co..""

Elhonnas movements are near instantaneous. The sound of her slap is deafening, and the downward momentum bounces Hins face into the wooden table and sends him sprawling backwards out of his chair. "That's enough from you today. Go to your quarters. We will discuss your reprimand later."

------------------------------

After a sulking Hin leaves the room, Elhonna removes her heavy gauntlet and rubs her hand. "He's always been a pain, but since we've gotten here, he's been worse than ever." She puts her gauntlet back on.

"22:00 hours is well after today's events. If your guess that talking to the Whisper is the last thing you need to resolve, that's probably your best move for right now. We are officially under orders to remain on the ship, but I think I can supply you at least one person to help if something comes up. Who do you want?"

It takes Tahni a moment to process all of this. "Conjuration and Transmutation. Teleportation is a conjuration spell. That could explain getting in and out of here. Phase Door perhaps? Disintegrate is a transmutation spell. No. That wouldn't explain the bulkhead reappearing. Perhaps Timestop to get a lot of things done quickly? Hold Person still allows you to see though. Perhaps the person was invisible?". She gets lost in her thoughts a little, trying to think about what other spells might be used to explain such a thing.

"Do you remember what time this all happened? If all of the leaders disappeared at the same time then there is more than one entity involved. That would make this all the more worrying. Also, without getting into the specifics of who or how, was there any way someone here could have seen seen an invisible intruder?"

Tahni is super impressed by Elhonna's speed. She stays silent though. It's not her place to be involved in that.

As for someone to join the party "I'm guessing we're not taking Hin with us. He would only provoke the Whisper - or us. With Crall missing the Seven will need Elhonna here to keep things under control. If someone is to join us, perhaps Urlryn should be it?"

----------------
Knowl checks:
- To work out what Urlryn might be, based on the clues provided by Hin.
- To think about what spells might have been used to abduct Crall.
Assuming Take10s, Tahni can hit DC35 on all Knowl checks except for History, which would hit DC34, as well as DC43 Spellcraft

Tahni wracks her brain on the magical effects. Her skill with the arcane is near legendary proportions, so piecing through the possibilities is simple for her. The effects of the spell, as described to Tahni, could be attributed to several things. Mass Hold Person and Mass Blindess/Deafness would make sense, if somehow chained together. Seeing as Tahni is a witch, she is also familiar with the concept of the Living Voodoo Doll curse, which could maybe also be involved. Then there's also the possibility that instead of chained spells in a short time, this is something else entirely, either an aura or a personalized or custom spell that is not in common practice.

She also spends time considering hints given as to Urlryn's origins. She narrows it down to the woman being either a construct or an undead, and Hin said she isn't a construct.

-------

Jozhur references the gist of their conversation back to his fellows. Fang is indifferent and Bralin uses humor to reference the fact that Urlryn wouldn't be the first person freaked out by Rill. On the matter of bringing along an ally, a few people are for Arum or Tora. Terser is strictly against Urlryn, as is Bralin.

-------

Rill, tired of speculation, tries to tie down Urlryns origins. He even manages to weave in a zinger about about Elhonna and a lack of courage, which the Knight Captain does not appreciate. "Listen here!", she begins, clearly wound up. "When a good soldier is told to a keep a secret, she does so! It's about the Fist, which is bigger than me, and has nothing to do with fear or courage. You self aggrandizing as-"

Urlryn cuts off her Knight Captain. "It's fine, Elhonna. Jozhur promised me, so it's fine." For a moment, the rooms temperature drops as Urlryn finds her words. "I am a vampire, Rill. An intelligent undead who prolongs her own life by eating the hearts of others. I have an item that allows me to defeat a deathwatch spell. Deathwatch is a first level spell. It isn't hard to overcome. I use mind blank to protect myself from other divinations. The Fist keep me a secret, because they don't want to be considered necromancers or undead overlords, and the damage to their reputation should it be known that I exist would be considerable. It's one thing for a band of mercenaries to hire a killer and attempt to reform her. It's another thing completely to knowingly consort with one of my breed."

The cold in the room increases again.

"And before you ask, lets get the easy questions out of the way. First, my bloodline doesn't care about the sun, running water, or garlic. Second, I feed on my squadmates because they are ordered to let me. Third, it's enough to keep the hunger at bay, but when I really feel the impulse, I feed on our enemies when the contract calls for their deaths. To be very clear, and very blunt, I eat their hearts. It's my nature." Her eyes meet Rills, and there is a demure shame within them. "Fifth, it's been about three hundred years since the last time I killed an innocent person. They fancied themselves a vampire hunter. It was technically self defense, but I am very much aware they thought they were a good person trying to kill an evil monster. I consider that a shame, since I spent that entire marriage suckling pigs blood and eating chicken hearts to keep from hurting anyone. But I guess not aging over the span of forty years was enough to convince my husband I needed a spike in the throat."

She looks at Tahni. "So Hin was technically correct if that helps your research. I am an object, per say. I'm a corpse. None of those spell effects should have affected me, but they did."

She gives Jozhur an apologetic look. He hears her voice in his head. "I'm sorry if you think I've tricked you, or lied to you. I do feel kinship with you. I think its your relationship with your shadow, it too is undead, and I think perhaps it's left a little of its own mark upon you. I could smell it on you from that very first meeting. It's a common to smell the evil stink of grave magic on spellcasters, but you are different. It's intoxicating to me, and I don't know why. It might be three hundred years of loneliness talking, but I desire your companionship in a way that probably makes no sense to either of us."

Fang had not been expecting vampire to be the answer and raises an eyebrow. This is immediately followed by a dismissive shrug. “Everything kills to eat, from the lowliest mouse to the greatest of dragons. As reasoning beings our responsibility is to form and follow moral codes to determine when and why to kill, to reduce the suffering of others to the greatest extent. WHO someone is, how they choose to answer those moral questions and the actions they take, is always far more important than WHAT they are. Even I, a priestess of Alemi have executed criminals when no redemption nor reasonable way to give trial and hold them was possible.

Should your actions reflect your words you have nothing to fear, from us at least. Should you prove to be a villain we will respond as our code requires, just as we would Hin or anyone else regardless of species or type of being.”

Unlike mindless undead, a sentient undead creature is able to make choices of their own. For the most part. If Urlryn is choosing to try and be good, then she is doing more than some of the noble races out there.

"Thankyou for being honest with us, Urlryn. You have done nothing to harm us so I don't think we have any issue here." Tahni gives a nod to her. "Now then. Let's go see the Last Whisper before the next round of combat beghins."

There is still the matter of who from the Seven will accompany the party.

As for a representative of your group to accompany us, perhaps it should be Tora as I think that would bother Hin the most."

Rill turns to Urlryn, his face touched with a bit of sadness.

"And you. You are a bit of a puzzle. A good vampire. That has to feed on the life of your friends. And eats peoples hearts. So let me say that I am glad for the contract I have signed to keep you secret safe and to not oppose you. We put up with that vampire in the Catacombs - we can put up with you.

"Hin is incorrect though - you are not an object, and you are clearly not a corpse. Your are a living creature that drinks people's blood and eats their hearts to maintain immortality and cheat death. You exist outside the cycle of life and death that defines the noble and ignoble races. You are doomed to prey upon the living, and to watch as all you care about live their natural lives and die to be reborn again according to Gargul's will.

"I do not hate you Urulyn, but I do pity you.

"So let me ask you this - would you give up your undead status and the ... benefits that the Fist is using you for? We have it within our power to restore you to a natural life. Would you choose this over the undying state you are trapped in?"

For a moment, the room is quiet. Urlryn stares at Fang, a bit shocked by such an earnest opinion from one of the quieter Sea Dragons. There's a look of appreciation and assessment in her gaze. Then Rill speaks, and she responds to him instead. She shakes her head no at his offer. Perhaps there's a hint of defiance there? Rill's promise of peace and the favorable reactions of others like Fang and Tahni and Jozhur seem to have both put her at ease, and emboldened her a bit.

"I don't think you understand the situation quite right, Rill. I didn't become a vampire of this bloodline, I am its progenitor. I've offered it to a few others, very few, in attempts at companionship. Some have died violently, others have found new interests besides myself over the centuries. I don't know how I became the manner of creature I am, but I know I was born this way and my parents were not like me. I aged until my mid twenties, then stopped. They kept me safe as long as they could, and when they could not, I moved away. A few scholars have theorized I am a mutation of the undead sorcerer bloodline, but whatever it is, it is what I am." She steals a glance at Jozhur, and hides a smile at his sniffs. "I desire to be accepted, and maybe if I'm lucky, loved again one day. But to be changed is not what I want."

Elhonna speaks up. "Now that THAT'S been explained, I'll assign Tora to you to you for now. Tora, Jozhur is your operational commander while with the Consortium. Give him all due respects." She looks at the beastkin, who simply closes his wolfish yellow eyes and nods. "I'll get my kit, Dragons, I'll meet you above decks."

If Elhonna has any thoughts on Rills apology, she doesn't put them to speech. Instead, she talks about Crall. "None. No exciting half dragon, half orc parentage there or anything like that. If you can rescue him, great. If you can get him a weapon, he'll help rescue himself."

Jozhur scratches his chin as he realizes what Urlryn is getting at. "I see. I like you, Urlryn. Maybe you can travel with me... us, after we find Crall and the others."

He dismisses Tora with a nod, just glad it isn't Hin tagging along.

Bralin nods politely to Ehlonna and Urlryn as the group rises to leave.

Looking over at Terser, he notes the dwarf checking for extra weapons.
"I also have an extra warhammer. Should those we are rescuing be able, arming them is achievable."

The dwarf accompanies his comrades, and Tora, back to the arena to find The Last Whisper.

"We'll do what we can" Tahni nods to Elhonna "I assume you will continue searching as well. You know where we'll be if you hear anything"

With Tora in tow, Tahni is ready to go find the Last Whisper.

Rill (MarkB) AC29 T16 F27, CMD 27, HP 169/169

"Elhonna, what sort of weapon does Crall use?"

"Urlryn, at some point before we all go our separate ways, I would like your permission to look into your soul. I will not do so without your permission, but I want to verify your intentions and what you have told me. Being the progenitor of a vampire species is no small thing for an Undead Hunter of Gargul to walk away from you, My God may demand answers. And I would like it to be after the final competition, as I don't want the perception that I would be doing so to gain any advantage over you."

Once we leave, Rill will clap Tora on the back. "TORA! TORA! TORA! Sorry - somebody had to say it.

"Anyway Tora, I'm glad you're with us. So, what's up with that Hin guy? Any idea why he seems to have a problem with beastfolk? They're relatively new, so he can't really have a grudge against any. And what's up with letting a vampire feed off of you? That must've been weird, not to mention hurt."
