Yes you were able to learn the Activation word it is - Klarandon. It means nothing in any language any of you speak and suspect it is simply a gibberish word.
The Petals go ashore, onto the jetties and into the city, as they prepare to move on one of their plans. You can see near the port lots of warehouses and buildings for the government to claim tax and for the ships to pay for docking fees and the like.
There are a few rundown houses here, and a few taverns, most with fairly large crowds of sailors in them. In some of the more affluent homes you can see Liontaur relaxing in what is sort of a cross between a window seat and a balcony, large enough to support perhaps two Liontaur, allowing them to enjoy the warmth of the sun when it is shining, as it is today.
The city awaits you and whichever route you decide to go.

Once nearing the harbour Tsak takes time to wash and shave. He cleans and straightens his clothes as best as possible and gives Esmerelda a brush. He's not sure how the feline will be received by the locals, but can't see her staying cooped up on the Rose for any longer.
Isn't doing something with that pendant the most pressing issue? We don't really know how powerful it is or how it actually works. I trust Elias, but don't want to see him take more risk than he needs to. Do we have a plan for dealing with it?

Kiwina is ready to follow through on their mission the way they had outlined it, meaning he would be with a group visiting the Coalborns.
As for the pendant, Elyas has been studying it. "Elyas, what have you learned about that thing?" Until they know more about it, the plan is to keep it locked away, right?

[ooc: since we fast forwarded through the few days of examining the necklace i don't want to hold up the rest of the party getting into town, but depending on the results of this will save and what info i get from it would affect what i did with the necklace while on board. for now I'll keep my in town actions vague enough that they can be changed if something bad happens from messing with this magic]
Once in town Elyas separates from the group a little bit to gather information. he just wanders around, talking with vendors and entertainers looking for general info on the political climate and popular opinions of this place. he listens for any news that may have occurred while the Petals were sailing.

The city is bustling and awaiting your next steps, merchants call to you to sample their wares, fresh fish and the catch of the day, some courtesans call to you from upper windows, trying to attract you into slightly seedy looking establishments. Overall it's nice to be in a larger city.

Kiwina wanders through the town unhurriedly, heading toward the Coalborns but looking for some small treats to take the kids. On the way, he will also try to find out if the Kotoris live in the same area. (And since he has no skill in local knowledge, he will have to askmwhere he is shopping.)

Rolth then accompanies Kiwina and the others, rummaging through his memories to try to recollect where the Kotoris might be found.

Elyas is frustrated by trying to identify the necklace and still has no idea what it does. he knows it is trying to control him in some way, and felt it at the back of his mind. before leaving the ship he wraps it up and tucks it away where no one will accidentally pick it up, not wanting ot have it on the island at all. he locks the chest he set it in and takes the key with him.
"I don't like this thing. i have still been unable to identify it, which means it is a very powerful magic item. We should cast it overboard the next time we're out to sea. let's see if we can't find one of those lead-lined boxes while we're here."

Falco looks to go and get food.
As you move through the city, you don't hear anything about the Kotoris at first, but you've only been here a short time, you may be able to pick something up soon. The markets are hustling and bustling as you head towards where the Coalborns are, as you can quickly pick up where they live by just asking a few shopkeepers.
As you head towards their home, you begin to spot a few minotaurs and centaurs, and notice that the port only has three other ships currently berthed. A vessel with several centaurs called the Forest Sea, a human vessel called Runthar's Folly, and finally a Liontaur vessel called the Sandifurr.
The building you are directed to is one of the much more affluent buildings, and you can see a dark coloured Liontaur lazing in the upper window as you approach. They look at you and watch you with interest as you get closer.

The Liontaur lounging on the window seat looks down at you more closely as you approach before waving and jumping down in front of you.
"Well met. I'm Jareth Coalborn. What can I do for you?"
Upon looking at this Taur you realise he's quite young, not quite an adult, but a late adolescent. He has an easy smile on his lips and relatively nice clothing. Not the highest end stuff, but certainly not peasant rags. He looks upon you all closely and waits to see how you react to him, you do notice that he is standing between you and the door.

He waves you forward.
"Come in, you can wait inside Arostle isn't here right now but I'm sure they'll want to see you when they get back. Tell me how you know them and what you're doing here in Chessford."
He shows you into the home. It's nice enough, definitely not incredibly rich, or even very rich, but well off and comfortable. Jareth guides you into a dining room of sorts with a few seats and offers you to sit, and offers a cup of tea to anyone who wants it.

Jareth smiles. "Well he's just there to help out... he's not actually on the council but is well respected enough that he kind of sits in, partly due to your help." Jareth sighs. "He would like to be on the council... but he hasn't got the backing and isn't the head of a Clan... maybe one day..."
Jareth chuckles and smiles before continuing to ask you questions about what other exploits you have gotten into, and keeping you topped up with tea and small dried snacks, all in all, he's an excellent and friendly host. After perhaps an hour, or an hour and a half, Arostle comes into the house and you hear him call out.
"Jareth! Are you still here?"
"In here! There are some people to see you!" Jareth appears in the doorway.
"By Domi... the Petals! How are you all it's good to see you!" He moves round shaking all your hands, stopping particularly on those he's met before and smiling widely.
"What brings you here to Chessford?"

Although Kiwina is still more fond of Bridge Island, since the group formed Chessford and Castle Violet have been the closest they've had to home on land. A chance to strengthen ties between the two is a good thing.
As he shakes Arostle's hand, Kiwina says, "We've just returned from Minotaur Island. There's a bit of a story behind that. But we've been asked to help the Purple Duke and wanted your advice." Before diving into the story, though, Kiwina pulls out about half the treats he'd found at the market and hands them to Jareth, "for you to share with your young cousins."

Certainly seems like things are going fine for you, getting invited to the Council and all. That is most fortuitous as well. As you may recall, we are trying to follow the will of Domi in reuniting the Taurs. As part of that quest, we have come from Minotaur Isle with a proposal from the Purple Duke. While there, we defended a liontaur community that was under threat from minotaurs not wise enough to heed the will of Domi or the rule of the Duke. We prevailed, though perhaps with more violence than was ideal. In any event, we now continue our quest here, where we hope to deliver the Council a proposal from the Duke for a minotaur settlement here on Liontaur Isle. Do you have any insights into the current politics between the clans? Who might welcome this plan, who will oppose, and what might sway some to our cause?"

Arostle gives a big smile. "You'd only be allowed to be involved in the discussions pertaining to what you want out of it, and what you can do for the council. They won't want you listening in on the whole meeting! The missing council member is Nantyr, of the Hounds Tooth Clan. Nantyr has been missing for just over a week now. They left to go settle something in the Clan Hold, but haven't returned, or sent word as to what's holding him up." Arostle takes a deep breath, also a long sip from his tea.
"But that was about two weeks ago, the journey should have only been a week or so there and back again. It's about 30 leagues away... so three days travel, if you walk for ten hours a day. Nantyr should have been gotten there, resolved the issue and been back, or at least sent a note saying what was holding them up. The council meets as often as it needs to, when there is something they need to resolve, they send word and the Council comes together. They've been meeting a fair bit in the last few days to decide what to do about Nan."
He smiles at you all.
"So have you decided to avail yourself of my hospitality, or are you going to go and find some more comfortable beds?" He smiles widely and self deprecatingly. "Don't feel you all need to go to the same place either, if some of you want to stay here, you're more than welcome, unless you all want to keep in a group, which I can understand."

Tsak and Esmerelda will stay aboard the Rose when they are in town, which mightn't be for long. Hunting the hunters sounds interesting.
Maybe we should keep our powder dry a bit longer regarding our diplomatic mission. It won't do to rush. Lets help find the missing council member and see what else we can do to be useful before we start making suggestions for change. We should try to forge our own alliances rather than focusing all through the prism of our relationship with Arostle. That's a bit similar to previous, and could have turned out better.

Mak pulled out his mandolin and started to pluck at the strings quietly as he sat in the corner and listened a little more. While he did so he pondered what he had heard and read about the missing taur and where the man had gone. Though Mak decided he'd have to consult with others, or look at maps to gain any further knowledge of the situation, he was quite pleased with his fingerwork on the musical instrument as he quietly played a tune he'd heard on Minotaur Isle.

"Seeing your ship would be grand. I'd really like that! But don't feel pressured, if you want to stay on your ship, please do!" He smiles widely. "Yea, that's the group. They mostly focus on the hunting, but yeah they like balance with nature. They don't get on well with Goldmane Clan, but that's just due to a difference of opinion... I don't think the Goldmanes would do anything untoward..." he sighs.
"But I've been wrong before. I do think Kiwina that if you offer to help the council search for Nantyr, it may help soften their opinions of you and make them more receptive to what you want. They want to get to the bottom of what's happened to Nantyr."
You take him on a brief tour of the Rose he enjoys being shown round, having a wide smile and a hearty laugh when you're talking about interesting things that happened, if Jareth seems to be enjoying it. But, soon enough night comes and you go and get food, or whatever other bits and pieces you want to do before heading back to wherever you want to lay your head to rest.
The morning comes, and Arostle is outside the Rose awaiting you.

Kiwina notices Elyas is spending an awful lot of time with this amulet that he fears, and is worried about his friend. He looks in on Elyas in order to check that the safeguards the group had set up are still being followed. While there and assuming Elyas lets him, he asks a few questions or makes a few suggestions of his own, since his connection with the spirits gives him a different perspective on magic (spellcraft roll = 17 to give Elyas a +2 on his attempt). (If Elyas doesn't want to risk it without additional protections on Kiwina, he understands.)
Off to breakfast, Kiwina has a hankering for eel and eggs, so long as the liontaurs don't serve it raw.

Arostle leads you through the town, heading towards a particular tavern. "This is one of my favourite places to get breakfast... " He guides you in and waves over a server, he orders for himself some porridge and a side of bacon, you find that they have a good selection of food here, since the town is obviously on some trade routes they have access to quite a lot.
"Breakfast is on me so have what you want!"
After a short period of time and some general small talk the food comes out, it's fresh and well made, hot were expected and well seasoned. It's easy to see why Arostle likes it here.
"So... I see why you may wish to keep your motives hidden, however, the Council will ask why you are here at all, since it's clear you're not natives. Considering your ship and other things, it may be that they get suspicious if you say you were 'just passing through' and decided to help. Elyas has already started looking at the amulet before Kiwina comes in, but he accepts his captain's help. he takes a break from looking over the amulet to cast protection from evil over Kiwina as well. after a while he gets frustrated. the answer has to be right here in front of our faces! why can we not figure it out? With all respect my friend, I do not think the spirits will be much help to us in figuring out this puzzle. this amulet is going to be a distraction, we should put it away for now and keep our focus on the task at hand and our meeting with the council. I will think on this some more and maybe we can come at it fresh in a few days
Elyas tries to hide the amulet a bit better, worried about someone coming and touching it without the proper protections. unfortunately there isn't really any good spot to hide it, and he gives up, not really happy with how well it is hidden (sleight of hand = 9)
in the morning, Elyas is rubbing his temples and obviously tired from staying up too late studying the amulet. he eats a normal portion of food, but is not paying full attention to anything being said at the table. those near him hear him mumble to himself ...The little creatures, how they nip and bite…

With respect to the Council, Rolth agrees that we should not hide our purpose, he just doesn't think that we have yet set the stage for our request. By all means let them know that we are here on a diplomatic mission, but that we would set that aside temporarily if they would like us to investigate the fate of the missing Council member. After all, we recently helped a threat to liontaurs on Minotaur Island, so we have some experience in this field!

Mak decided he'd introduce himself to the two bystanders, so he stood up and walked over to them with a beverage in either hand. He slid into a seat and pushed the drinks towards them. "I'm Mak. Who do I have the pleasure of meeting?"
Mak might have been a bit tipsy as his leg wasn't presently hurting. He leaned back into his chair and fiddled with his rapier while he took a long drink on his own beverage.

The ranger wonders whether taurs, whilst maybe not used to those with half-orc blood, may at least not be as intimidated and defensive as many humans are.

The couple look a bit taken aback, and confusion washes across their face. "I'm Hondar, this is Gerrin. We just thought you guys might have been the Petals... we heard they did some good work with Liontaurs... that was all... I don't think you are, but Gerrin, she insist you are." the male says, looking at you all.

Rolth loudly proclaims the establishment as a good one.
Elyas quietly mentions how good the food is.
Tsak tries to bring Mak along with him.
Arostle chuckles as you all leave. "Looks like your reputation proceeds you somewhat... but that could be to our benefit. Come, follow me, I will take you to the council."
He guides you through the streets, making small talk and pointing out various sights and things to see, taverns and food sellers to try that sort of thing. After ten minutes or so of walking, you arrive at a building that's more grandiose than the others. Still not ostentatious, but undeniably the seat of power here. Arostle guides you in.
"Wait here, I will go and check the council is assembled, and see if they are able to speak to you now. If so, I will return and get you, if not I will return and let you know."
Arostle indicates some seats that are waiting for you. There are a good number of seats in this corridor, almost like a waiting room of some sorts, and there are others sitting down and milling about. After about twenty minutes Arostle returns goes to one of the people waiting and speaks to them briefly before the person goes in.
He comes over to the Petals.
"Right, I've got you on the docket for today they have one more person they must see before you. You'll probably be waiting an hour or so. If you wait here, I'll return for you as soon as I can."
He smiles and heads back into what you assume is the Council Chamber. Leaving you alone for a little while...

Rolth takes the opportunity to work the room, introducing himself to the other folks who are here to meet with the Council. He will try to learn what they are here for, what they know of the views and interests of the various clan representatives, and any other juicy tidbits that they might have to share. If asked, he'll share the basic outline of our purpose here (i.e. that we are on a diplomatic mission but want to offer to find the missing Council representative first), but not the details.

Mak allowed himself to be drawn along with the rest of the crew as he cast an apologetic look at the two patrons in the tavern. Once he was out though his demeanor changed noticeably and his drunken stagger vanished. Once more he was on alert.
At Tsak's offer to take a walk, Mak agreed, but only to scout out the surrounding area. "Let's get a good lay of the streets and byways around here while we wait." Mak suggested without a hint of drunkenness.
"I've heard tales of more than one council meeting go sideways. If that happens it won't hurt us to know which way to run." Mak jested.

Rolth, Kiwina and Falco all listen to the quiet conversations going on around.
Mak and Tsak go for a brief walk for some fresh air.
Elyas tries to pay attention but is distracted.
The conversations are fairly basic and boring business, disputes about land, requests for permits the sort of thing that in a larger city would be dealt with by bureaucrats, but here has to be dealt with by the Council themselves.
Arostle comes to collect you at the appointed time, a wide smile on his face. "Come now, follow me. I will lead you in, introduce the council, and allow you to introduce yourselves, you will then be permitted to speak and be asked questions. It should be simple enough. "
He guides through into a large-ish room. In the centre is a table around which there are six sits, five are occupied, one is empty. A large, older Liontaur stands as you enter, his mane is beginning to lose it's colour, but his eyes are sharp and intelligent.
"May I introduce Harkin Sandifurr, Gyrak Longclaw, Tenzar Goldmane Jasak Redtooth and Irian Stormeye." Arostle gestures to each person in turn, starting with the standing Taur, Harkin.
He next indicates a slightly younger Taur, though still oldish, with crisscross scars over his body, causing his black fur to not grow in certain places, and up his arms, and on his face, he sits with a put-upon look, and has the bearing and stature of a warrior, he's well build and his muscles are clear through his entire body.
Tenzar is a Liontaur with flowing gold hair, his mane is impressive and is adorned further with gold rings and jewels, he is wearing what appears to be the richest fabrics and garments, far more ostentatious than anyone else sitting around the table.
Jasak looks you over, and the first thing that strikes you about this taur is that he looks like you just told him you killed his favourite pet, he is scowling and looking up and down at the Petals, the frown never far from his face, his arms are crossed and he appears to be very tense, he has a shock of red in his mane, but in his mane.
Irian moves with grace and strength despite is very apparent advanced years. His fur and mane have no colour remaining, it has all been drained by time. He wears over his right eye an eye-patch, with a lightening bolt etched into the leather.
"Noble Council Members, allow me to introduce the Petals."
Arostle bows and indicates your group, as Harkin speaks, his voice is strong and full of pride.
"So, Arostle tells us you wished to speak with us, so, who are you, why are you here?"

And yet here we stand before you today, which ought to say something about Domi's judgment of right in the case."
"But now we arrive before you, with one of your own missing, the self-same Nantyr HoundsTooth who Falco would have common ground with. So let me propose this, that the Eight Petaled Rose undertake on your behalf to investigate the situation of the missing HoundsTooth Council Representative, then report back to you our findings and continue our diplomatic mission. We will of course continue to stand up for our fellow taurs, and endeavor to use only the appropriate level of force, if any such is called for. Will you accept our aid in this matter?"

If one or two of the clan leaders are particularly disdainful, he favors them as he adds his own words in Rolth's support (diplomacy = 2 to aid Rolth). Very tongue-tied words that add no substance to the conversation.

Mak straightened when his name was called and leaned forward with a shallow bow of respect to the assembled Taurs. "Mak Ebonblade, Sargeant 5th Infantry group, retired." Mak then said a few encouraging words in support of Rolth and his introduction without managing to embarrass himself too badly.

Afterwards he stepped back respectfully to observe the assembled councilmen to see if meeting them triggered any memories from his time studying as a youth. Once more his mind was blank, he just couldn't remember anything helpful about this remote island and it's inhabitants. Instead he did what no amount of forgetfulness could take from him and maintained a proper decorum for the occasion.

Rolth gives an impassioned speech about who you are and what you do.
Most of the rest of the Petals either watch for reactions, or try to help.
The council doesn't seem to let much on, however, they do seem to soften a bit, Goldmane gives a Traders Welcome back to Rolth before Sandifurr speaks again.
"You speak well Master Niheow... you do your team a great service. We would potentially accept your help in discovering what happened to Nantyr, however I have some questions first. Primarily, what did the Purple Duke want you to negotiate with us? If we know what it is, we are able to start our deliberation process now, which may mean we can give you a swifter answer. Does anyone else have any questions for them?"
The other Council members look to one another, and all have a quick, quiet chat, you can't make out what is being said, but it seems like far more information is being passed than is being said.
"Arostle speaks highly of you, and word of what you did has reached us, yes. We are glad that you helped solve the issue over in Greenfell... we often hear of mistreatment of non Minotaur Taur there, and am glad you stepped in... however it was a little... violent for our tastes... well maybe not Jasak, but for the rest of us. What assurances do we have you won't end up fighting and killing our citizens?"

We regret that the situation spiraled out of our control, and that taurs of any kind died needlessly. We accepted our just punishment from the Purple Duke, but more importantly, have agreed among ourselves to try to do better in future such endeavors. We have discussed less lethal tactics that might be applied, and resolved to make use of them when appropriate. You may also notice that I am myself a citizen of this isle, and have no wish to kill my fellow liontaurs without cause. Taking all that into account, I feel that I am on safe ground to assert that we will not fight or kill citizens here except in the most extreme case, when compelled to do so."

Assuming they assent, Rolth will huddle with the Petals for a quiet sidebar conversation. "I think that we should politely hold off delivering the proposal until we can be here to influence the discussion. That will also give us time to hopefully learn more about the politics and gain favor by discovering Nantyr and saving him as necessary. What do you think?"

Here they were stuck in council chambers and without the benefit of talking things over. Here would be the test of Rolth's mettle and his ability as a diplomat. Mak knew what to do and how to do it, but for him the implementation was often lacking. Without speaking he laid a hand on Rolth's shoulder as a show of support for whatever the taur was going to say.
Lacking any specific knowledge of the nobility here Mak tried to remember the history of the place, but his memory failed him.

The rest of the council waits for the Petals' response.

"I have been sent by my lord to talk to you about who you will be looking to discuss things with. The Sandifurrs is one Clan you need to talk with, another is the Longclaws, and finally the Goldmane's, but really you will need to take his sealed proposal to the Council of the Clans... only they together can make the decision, I would suggest mayhaps scoping the political position out and maybe getting close to the clans with the most power right?"
And what Falad said on the docks.
"Well Rolth, the three clans that have been mentioned would be a good start yes. They are the three we feel have the most power to wield and will be receptive to our requests to establish a Minotaur Settlement on Liontaur Isle. Unfortunately I don't know much about them, or how they make their decisions, you may have to see what you can find out once you get there. As far as I understand it there are an odd number of votes, so there cannot be ties. As for more agents, we are sending you. We have had minimal dealings with them in the past, and no Mr Ambersier, you don't have to wear that hat."
He realizes he is not wearing a hat, himself.

"With your indulgence, we would prefer to delay our presentation of the Duke's proposal until such a time as we have investigated the absence of the Hounds Tooth representative and reported back to you. "Very well you make a good case. I would suggest going a few days travel to the North, you will find the Hounds Tooth clan lands there. If you can investigate their lands it may shed some light on what has happened to dear Nantyr." He smiles. "I'm sure a group as talented as you will have no issue with finding Nantry. I would suggest resting here in Chessford today, and heading out tomorrow, that will give you a chance to get any supplies you may need for the journey."
Arostle nods, then leads you out of the council chambers.
"Well, it seems you have at least intrigued them. I would agree with his suggestion, we can meet for breakfast at the same place tomorrow if you like, or you can sort yourselves out some breakfast. Just come and say goodbye before you head off."
Arostle smiles, and takes his leave of you, giving you several hours to do any shopping you may need to do to get prepared for your journey.

After our departure from the chamber, he thanks Arostle and agrees to join him for breakfast at the same place tomorrow. "That was quite satisfying!"
In the meantime, he heads over to the Catacombs to sell the pile of remaining loot from the harpies' lair, on behalf of the party. He comes back with a bag of 724gp for each Petal.

Elyas thanks Rolth and takes his purse of coins with him back to the ship. he tucks it away in his clothes chest, next to the wrapped up amulet. he touches its wrapping briefly, considering bringing it with him just in case. he stops himself and tucks it back away, closing the chest over it and turning away. the others were right, he shouldn't go against the guidelines that they had set. but he also didn't want to put any of them in danger. the easiest solution was just to keep it hidden for now until this whole diplomacy thing was sorted out.

The little cat has grown substantially and is now obviously no ordinary house cat. Her well groomed fur glows in the sun and she looks magnificent. And she knows it!
As Tsak and the party leave she falls into line ready for the next adventure.

Mak had been reluctant to stay in an advertised location this past night and didn't sleep well as each small noise had him instantly awake. By morning he was still a little bleary eyed as he rubbed his face and washed the sleep away with water from the basin in the room.
Later after he joined the others he stayed alert with an eye on those that might be following them. As diligent as he was however the sleepless night was taking a toll on him and he likely missed anything or anyone of note.

He did like Rolth's idea of collecting some food for the road and purchased a few confectionaries for the trip and some of the establishments fine bread and an extra skin with some ale in it, in case his leg started to act up again.

"The land is fairly flat and open, you shouldn't encounter anything dangerous, maybe the odd wolf or the like... but the lands aren't far enough away that you would expect to see anything particularly taxing, especially for adventurers such as yourselves. Nantyr is a strong, well built Taur. He has the accoutrements of a druid, but the physicality of a warrior. He has brown fur and blue eyes. You will know Nantyr when you see him. Well, by us it was here in Chessford a few weeks ago... before he set off, as we told you. Beyond that, we've not seen him hence why we're sending you to investigate. He didn't really say what he was doing, just that he had some clan business to attend to, and so had to head back home for a few days. If you're looking for Nantyr, I'm sure anyone in the clan will help you, after all, they will want him back so they have a voice on the council again."
Arostle spends time answering your questions, but before too long, it is time to leave, you all collect your packs and your gear, and begin heading out of Chessford in the direction you were told, towards the Hounds Tooth clan lands.
The journey is over flat plains and rivers, and is actually very pleasant as you head on your way. There is the odd hill or decline that you have to climb up or down, but over all it'd actually be a nice place to walk if you weren't doing something that was time sensitive, and somewhat depressing.
The first day passes without incident, and you set up camp for the evening.

Mak considered a land mostly populated with lion like creatures and wondered about a society composed of them. He'd have thought that in a land dominated by creatures such as these might develop some kind of hunter based hierarchy where the most successful rise to the top of society. In a place like that he supposed they'd intentionally allow dangerous creatures to proliferate as a test for the young and those that wanted to demonstrate their prowess.
"Friend Rolth. The land seems very...tame. Certainly dangerous creatures abound..for sport perhaps?" He asked tentatively.

As they spend more time traveling Falco reviews what has gone on since he left his parents. Not even thinking about the transformation of his body he reviews their expliots. First the Taurnmanet, then the warper-sar comes into his life, then.... traveling, lots of sailing and walking. While all this is in his head he still visibly shrugs thinking 'Maybe we started to fast, I did not realize how much time took place between adventures. My plan to make weapons has gone out the window on a boat and when walking.'

Everyone chats and enjoys each other's company, asking questions about the island itself as well.
The night passes without incident, the discussions about hellhounds is interesting and quickly confirms the smell of brimstone. The idea of torches is a good one, but will only allow you to see within the circle of torches, anything outside that will be invisible due to the fact your eyes would be used to the torches and not allow you to see beyond the light.
Once you all awaken the next morning, from a (relatively) comfortable and uneventful night, and continue your journey overland, the plains are enjoyable and still very pleasant, despite a short shower of rain during the day just before you stop for lunch. Again this day passes uneventfully, and you need to find a place to camp for the evening.

Mak brightened up when it came time to pick a camp once the end of the day arrived. He carefully considered the areas as they passed them by and even suggested one that looked very defensible, but one more wiser than he pointed out it was on a game trail and would have trouble with wild animals. Though he was crestfallen, Mak paid attention to the the location that was chosen and asked a few questions about it's worthiness so he'd be better prepared in the future should he need to pick one himself.

Elyas happily follows the others' lead in selecting where to camp. he is a little bit embarrassed to be the only one not taking a watch, but he doesn't complain too loudly about it. after all a wizard does need his beauty rest...
the journey is surprisingly nice, much calmer and easier than anything they have done recently. Elyas is enjoying the quiet and calm of walking long distances.
Tsak helps set up camp. If people don't mind I'd like to use the opportunity to see how well Esmerelda and I hunt together?
If there are no strenuous objections he sets off with his feline to follow the animal trails and see what they can catch. He makes sure not to stray too far from the camp (stays within a mile of camp).
Anything edible caught is shared with the group.

Travelling with an army had ill prepared Mak for this type of movement. He'd no need for hunting because there was always someone else of lower rank to do that. The same could be said for choosing a campsite. Certainly an officer had to bless the site and he'd had to direct one of those into the correct choice strategically on more than one occasion, but he'd never chosen a site himself or tried to before now.
One thing he had learned since joining up with these heroes was to keep your weapons close when sleeping. That hard won wisdom had stuck with him and if an alert went up on second watch he'd have his armor on and weapons at hand to deal with any threat threat.
But first, he slept.

He grabs a pot from the cooking fire and starts banging it with a stick, the cacophony should be loud enough to wake all the petals. Wake up, we've got company! Up and at 'em Petals!
He then hefts his sword and moves to the edge of the camp site, trying to clear his vision from the light sources behind him.

The whole camp is awoken from sleeping by Tsak's cacophony with the pot, Rolth and Mak were awakened first, and silently by Falco.
The banging noise also seems to cause whatever it was to move to come out of the darkness, and before you all you see Ten Hellhounds come stalking out of the night, thankfully, because of Tsak and Falco, you are all awake when they enter the camp, allowing you to respond immediately rather than be blindsided.
They are currently all surrounding your camp in a semi circle from one direction. The camp itself is forty feet across, and they are approaching from the direction you were moving in. Currently Tsak is within ten feet of them, and Falco and Mak are at the back of the camp, the rest of you can decide where you are. You are all awake, and standing, (so no need to get up) but only have the gear you were either sleeping with on, or any weapons that were next to you (nothing in backpacks or stowed in other places in the camp.)
The Hellhounds let out a roaring bark as they approach, now that their element of surprise is gone.
