Palace of the Moon

DM Kathy
Friday July 3rd, 2020 2:44:51 PM

When your senses return, you are standing in a courtyard. Ahead of you looms a magnificent palace, made of some kind of purply-blue stone you don't recognize. The light is--odd. It seems to be daylight; the sun is shining, but the light isn't like anything you've ever experienced. There is another body in the sky, in addition to the sun, and you don't place it immediately.

Knowledge: Geography 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {That's the Wold! You recognize the shape of the continents. Which means that--you're on one of the Wold's two moons!}

Knowledge: Geography 20 Highlight to display spoiler: { That's the Wold overhead. You must be on Wardd or Kerracles. You're pretty sure, though, that if you were on Wardd, you'd be able to see Kerracles. And Wardd is probably darker than this. You believe you're on Kerracles.}

The tow-head druid looks around, mouth agape. He takes in the dimensions of the palace before them, calculating rough dimensions of courtyard, and of castle (Knowledge: Engineering 24).

Then he sees something larger than Wardd, larger than Kerracles in the sky - and of a blue cast mixed with various earthtones. He recalls the image he saw a few years ago drawn by Lord Karlton Pobberington-Whyte III. He has, and has read, the first volume of his 17-volume series Journye to the Moones, about his epic balloon journey into the heavens.

Still not speaking, he reaches into his haversack and pulls out a small illustrated booklet. Faces of Our Moons contains detailed drawings of the surfaces of the two moons of the Wold, Karracles and Wold. He thumbs through quickly, though he has read and studied it many times, that he almost has it memorized. Murphy has spent considerable time thinking about how to get to one or both of the moons.

As he points to the bright Finally, Murphy speaks.

"That object in the sky is our homeworld, the Wold. And we, friends, have flown, not beyond, but to the moon - Kerracles, that is." He holds up his booklet. "And I have a map of the surface."

"Thanks Bliss, Mookie. Anyone want to take a look at the map of Kerracles? It's the second half of this booklet." He opens it to the appropriate page, and hands it off to whoever wants to grab and look first. "We'll have to look around a bit more before knowing where on the map we are."

Doing so, he looks at what objects, artwork, courtyard furniture, and sign of habitation there may be. Has the palace windows? Doors? A visible doorway from the courtyard to the palace? A gate or other passageway out of the courtyard away from the palace? How tall does the castle rise? How broad is it? He attempts to take in whatever may seem germane to figuring out the next step. He also looks to see if the device that vibrated them to this place has joined them in the courtyard.

Pressi lets out a bit of breath as Murphy speaks of being on one of the moons. "Shouldn't one of us be casting planar adaptation, then?"

Looking at the palace, "Now, see, THIS is what I've been holding out for in a base. None of the dusty ruins stuff. The commute's a little rough, though..."

She takes some time to look at the map that Murphy has. "I'd cast find the path, but it'd probably mark the building ahead as relevant."

DM Kathy
Monday July 6th, 2020 1:56:06 PM

Tali looks around, but her robe doesn't show her anything that wasn't visible on first glance.

Kezzem says you aren't in Kansas anymore, although to be fair, you weren't in Kansas to begin with. It's obvious you aren't in Cthonia anymore either.

Murphy knows where you are! You are on Kerracles! He even has a map! Your DM was not even aware that maps of Kerracles existed! The things they don't tell DMs....

[Apologies in advance if this area doesn't conform to anything on the map; I didn't know there was a map I needed to conform to.]

Bliss looks around. The Prying Eyes don't seem to have made the trip. You don't see the Teucri artifact that got you here, either, which raises the interesting question of how you're going to get back to the Wold.

Hobie fulfills a lifelong dream by firing an arrow into the stones of the courtyard.

Pressi wonders about planar adaptation, but you are still on the Prime Material plane. Just a different part of it.

Succotash wonders aloud about whose palace this is, and whether you should knock. Murphy also wonders, and starts studying the structure for clues.

You don't have much time to wonder or look around, however. Almost as soon as you realize where you are, you see a tiny creature emerge from one of the palace doors. Then another creature. Then another. They keep coming out, walking toward you.

You are seasoned adventurers, so you are on your guard, but they do not look threatening. None are more than 3 feet tall. They have kind of rubbery skin, in shades of gray, blue, and green. They carry no weapons and make no threatening moves. They keep coming out of the palace, until there are a few dozen of them, scattered around you in the courtyard. They bow in unison.

From somewhere off to your right, a voice says "Welcome, guests!"

It's hard to tell which little creature spoke. It only spoke two words, and by the time you were narrowing down which one it might be, it had stopped speaking.

From somewhere ahead of you, "Welcome to the Palace of the Moon!"

Again, you can't figure out which one spoke until it's done speaking.

From your right again, but a different spot, "Perhaps you would like some refreshment?"

They continue speaking, one at a time, from different spots in the crowd. Their voices are not identical, but they are very, very similar. It's hard to pinpoint which one is speaking at any given time.

"Or perhaps you would like a tour of the palace?"

"Or perhaps you are tired and wish to rest?"

"We are at your service."

One creature, with grayish-green skin, approaches close to where Hobie shot his arrow into the courtyard. It bows to Hobie, then begins tugging at the arrow to remove it from the stones.

Bliss turns back into a halfling. Mookie says, Take us to your leader.

"Alas."

"We cannot."

"Lord Kerracles is not here."

"But he comes!"

"Soon, he comes!"

Succotash asks, Might I ask whose palace this is, and...what do you call yourselves?

"Lord Kerracles."

"This is his palace."

"For him and his guests."

"Welcome, guests!"

"We are moonlings."

Kezzem and Pressi are weirded out by these entirely-too-cute-and-friendly creatures. Kezzem asks, Would you fellas be interested in trying some Woldian mushrooms?

"Alas."

"We do not consume food."

"But thank you."

"You are most generous."

Pressi asks, I am curious as to how you aren't surprised or wary of us. Have others used this method of transport... recently?

"Not recently."

"Not for a long time."

"We are not wary of guests."

"Lord Kerracles' guests."

"Welcome, guests!"

Meanwhile, Tali is looking around. She is especially clear-eyed at the moment, yet does not see anything alarming or untoward. The moonlings are much as they first appeared. The courtyard is clean and tidy. The palace still looms ahead, many stories, probably many rooms. Tali sees a mix of architectural styles--a domed roof, crenellated towers, a colonnade. You cannot see what's behind the palace. Behind you, beyond the courtyard, you see gently rolling hills.

Meanwhile, the moonling has succeeded in yanking Hobie's arrow out of the courtyard. It readily hands over the arrow. The arrowhead has been damaged, and Hobie puts the arrow away for future repair. Three other moonlings approach, one carrying a small bucket, one carrying a small sack, and one carrying a trowel. They, too, bow to Hobie before beginning to repair the stones of the courtyard.

Murphy says, Apologies for the small damage to the stone.

"No apologies are necessary."

"Think nothing of it."

"We are here to serve."

He continues, I should love a tour of the palace, as we ate not too long ago.

"Of course!"

"We are happy to oblige."

"Right this way."

The crowd of moonlings parts, making a path to where two moonlings stand side by side, beckoning Murphy (and anybody else who wants a tour). They don't seem super-invested in the idea that you will all be doing the same thing, so people can come on the tour, or do something else, as they prefer.

Bliss is delighted with these fine fellows. He does not have the heart to tell them that their Lord is gone, long gone.

Instead, as the tour progresses, he enjoys asking questions ...

What is this room? What is it used for? Does anybody besides moonlings live here? Do you face any danger? Does anything threaten you? How long do you live? Are you all identical?

Then his curiosity gets the better of him.

How long will you wait for Lord Kerracles? What if he does not come back? What was the last order he gave you? What did he look like? Was he kind or mean? What if he is not alive any more? Did you ever hear about the Year of Ascension?

Mookie has some questions too: Where's the treasure vaults? Are there any magic items or works of art or gems around here? Did anybody ever try to steal anything in here? Anything ever go missing? What do you do to make sure everything stays safe?

Bliss says, "Mookie, hush!"

As some of the group sets off for the tour, Pressi pleads illness and asks to be shown to the powder room. A trio of moonlings is instantly by her side. "Yes!" "Of course!" "Right this way!" As they lead you through the ground floor of the palace, they pepper you with anxious questions about how you are feeling, whether you are light-headed, whether there's anything that could help settle your stomach. They lead you up a grand, sweeping staircase and down a plush hallway to a set of double doors. One of them opens the doors. "In here!" "Your quarters!" "We hope you like them!"

You see that they have led you, not to a privy, but to a large, ornate guest suite. There is a sitting-room with a fireplace, and a bedroom with a large four-poster bed. More moonlings are inside the suite, variously dusting, fluffing, and arranging things. One is laying a fire in the fireplace. You are, eventually, able to chase them out and cast your spell.

Legend Lore lets you know legends about a place, but you discover that there aren't many legends about this palace. Most people probably don't know it exists. You do learn about Kerracles, God of Generalities, who has not been seen since the Year of Ascension. The consensus is that he is dead, but of course, you never know with gods. Look at Kevintar. Kerracles is said to take the form of a halfling with a literal ear-to-ear grin. You are also able to learn that this palace is one of several dotted over the surface of this moon, for the pleasure of Kerracles and his guests. Kerracles created the palaces, and created the moonlings to serve in them.

Once your spell is complete, you leave the guest suite to try to find the tour again. You find a moonling in the hallway who is happy to lead you to them.

Meanwhile, the tour departs with Murphy, Bliss, Succotash, and Tali, leaving Hobie and Kezzem in the courtyard. Hobie expresses some concern that the moonlings may be slaves. As far as Succotash and Murphy can tell, though, the moonlings are not under any kind of coercion. On the contrary, they seem quite happy.

Bliss finds that most of his questions are unnecessary. The moonlings tell you about each room they take you to. On the ground floor, you see a grand foyer with sweeping staircases up to the second floor. You see a deserted ballroom, its chandeliers and mirrored walls patiently waiting for the next gala. There is a formal dining room, and several smaller rooms for more intimate meals. There are parlors, sitting rooms, drawing rooms, reception rooms. Each is described in loving detail by the moonlings--even the hall of temporary offices that can be used by guests. That gets a little tedious. "This room is a den or office that can be temporarily assigned to one of Lord Kerracles' guests." Next room. "This room is a den or office that can be temporarily assigned to one of Lord Kerracles' guests." And on, and on.

But Bliss has other questions, too. You learn that the moonlings are the only permanent residents of the palace. They face danger because sometimes they fall down and hurt themselves. When you clarify, they say that no, nothing attacks or threatens them here. They are not exactly identical, but they are all "within standards," whatever that means. You ask them how long they live, and they don't understand the question. Finally one of them says tentatively, "We do not age or die."

Mookie has questions as well. There is no treasure vault, but the moonlings point out which paintings and hangings are especially valuable. There is a small collection of potions and other minor items that are available to guests, should they require them. There are many items decorated with gems, but no large piles of gems just lying around. They do not know of anything that has ever been stolen from the palace, nor do they know of any attempts. They explain that the only people who stay here are Lord Kerracles and his guests. Lord Kerracles cannot steal from himself, and his guests are honorable people who would respect his things.

Pressi rejoins the group just as you are finishing with the ground floor and heading up one of the sweeping staircases to the second floor. The tour will continue, but I'm going to pause here.

Meanwhile, in the courtyard, the moonlings finish their repair and head back into the palace. There are still several moonlings in the courtyard, ready to give Hobie and Kezzem anything they may require. Kezzem is uneasy because they only said they don't eat food, which might leave a Kezzem-sized loophole! You never know!

Mookie asks if they have any worms.

Then he asks how guests generally leave this moon when they want to go home.

Privately, he asks his pals, "Should we tell them that Erracles-Kay is ead-Day?"

"How often do you have visitors here? How long ago were the last guests of Kerracles here, if you recall?" Murphy asks.

Was Murphy able to get a territorial view from up higher to compare with his map? If so, he looks on the map, and points to where he thinks this castle of hospitality sits. "Do you read maps? If so, is this where we are on this map?" If not, "Can you show me where on this map this castle is? I have wanted to visit Kerracles for many years, now, so was delighted when I was awarded this map. I have it almost memorized," he boasts, though not terribly immodestly - he is embarrassed that he does not have it fully put to heart.

"Can you tell us about neighbors around here? Are there other friendly people such as yourself nearby? Are the dangers, or monsters, or possibly unfriendly people outside this castle? One often will build a castle for defensive purposes. Have there been battles fought here on this moon?"

Farther on the tour he asks, "Have you a library, or libraries? Some of us love to read."

Finally, he inquires, "Is there some service we could render you? I cannot promise we will be able to do it, but if it is a good task, a good purpose, we can talk it over."

He enjoys Kezzem's song. He answers Bliss, "I think they may be aware of that. Yet, as with many gods, just dying or the like does not mean one cannot make a comeback. Look at Domi. And Eberyon. And Serebeth. Maybe others I do not know about. My brother Kendry keeps up on those things much more than I. If you want to do so... well, if they do not know, is it our place to tell them?

"What do you think, ladies? How about the rest of you?" He listens, and thinks.

"What if we ask them, 'When was the last time you saw your lord?(*) What were his last words to you? Do you expect him back at any time? If so, do you know when?' Probe, before flat out telling. That way, we may learn more. If they do not know, then would they lose purpose if they heard what you asked about."

He also looks forward to learning what Pressi might have learned. He knows her well enough that he knows she is covering up something.

(*) Though, were Murphy to actually ask, he would say 'Lord Kerracles.' He just uses the title, in case any are listening in on what seems to be a private conversation.

Pressi watches as the rest of the team take their eyes somewhat off the prize. Weren't they supposed to be looking for a talisman for a Kobold village? Even as she thinks the question, though, something is off.

Talking to Murphy later, she rolls over some of the bits and pieces that they learned. "So, lets make some assumptions. Like, that the abandoned temple was a Kerracles temple. I'm going to assume if there are other cities on the moon, there are other temples below. Probably meant to transport "guest" clerics to and from this location. Except... where are the prayer rooms and shrines? Why office space?

"Second, I can't shake the feeling that we've been led here by the nose for some purpose. Kerracles may be dead but his disciples clearly aren't. And with recent activity in the wold's religions, and with Kerracles being a halfling god... and with something being off from the start... I don't think we are in danger, but I can't...."

Finally, she turns to the moonlings. "The other guests that arrived here, long ago. What were the typical activities they would do in these offices? And what was the first thing they did upon arrival on their second visits?"

Hobie and Kezzem decide to come on the tour after all, so the party is together, apart from Pressi who is off casting her spell. Kezzem sings a jaunty tune, possibly dreaming of a moon-based theme park.

Succotash enjoys the tour.

Just as you are ascending the stairs and reuniting with Pressi, Bliss says he is hungry and asks for refreshment. Mookie asks for worms.

The moonlings are nothing if not accommodating. One of the two leading the tour bows to Bliss. "Of course! If you will come this way." He leads the way back down the stairs and toward one of the parlors. Any of the rest of the party interested in a snack can tag along.

The moonling leads you to one of the parlors you saw earlier on the tour. It is furnished in shades of rose, gold, and cream, and it is very nice. Also, you discover as you sit down, very comfortable. You ask how guests leave when they want to go home. "Many of Lord Kerracles' guests are gods or powerful mages and can transport themselves and their parties home," the moonling replies. "Some need to be sent home, and Lord Kerracles is happy to oblige."

At that moment, several moonlings come into the room, pushing a series of tea-carts. Efficiently, they unload and serve a very tasty afternoon tea, including scones with jam, little sandwiches, fresh fruit, and shortbread. They also bring a small dish containing mealworms.

Bliss wants to ask his companions about how to break the news to the moonlings, but it is not yet clear whether anybody has come to enjoy this bounty with him. Perhaps he should not be so eager to it-splay the arty-pay.

Meanwhile, the tour continues with anyone interested. Pressi is concerned because weren't you supposed to recover a kobold talisman? Your DM reminds you (because it's only been hours for your character) that you did recover a talisman in the hidden compartment of the altar in the jungle temple. You got sidetracked before you could return it, but you do have it.

You ask the moonling what the guests did in the offices. "That depends on the guest. Some wrote letters. Some studied books or manuscripts. Some took naps. Some had small meetings with other guests." You ask what guests did immediately upon arrival. "That depends on the guest. Some went straight to their quarters to rest. Some took refreshment. Some went to see Lord Kerracles. Some walked about the palace, or down to the lake."

There's a lake?

For those still on the tour, the remaining moonling tour guide is soon joined by more moonlings. They show you around the upper floor, which is mostly guest quarters. These have more variety than the guest offices, so they're more interesting. And many of them look out over the lake. It is a large lake, and its waters are a strange, very light blue color. Well, except for the stain. There is a dark, oily stain in the lake, near the western shore. On the shore directly behind the palace, there is a structure of some kind. It looks like a boathouse.

Murphy is only now getting his higher view. You compare the shape of the lake you see with the lakes on your map, and can narrow it down to three options. Maybe more information will be forthcoming. The moon palaces don't seem to be marked on the map, which is a pity because it would probably help you narrow it down.

You ask about neighbors, but there aren't any. You ask about dangers, and the moonlings talk about dangerous lake creatures. Of course, they are only dangerous to people who decide to go out on (or in) the lake. You note that castles are often built for defense, but if this palace was built for defense then the architect should be fired. It's much more suited for pleasure, and that is probably what it was intended for.

And I'm going to need to leave it there with a reminder that those having tea have not seen the lake, and those up on the second floor have not had tea, or heard Bliss's questions.

OOC: Re Murphy's "what's your name." I'm picturing Kathy scrambling through name books for 150 new names over candlelight, as her curse comes over Kim like a plague through the shadowy night. Either than or everyone's named Moonling.

also OOC: are we supposed to be finished our updates by now?

"Oh, right, we still have the talisman. Still... shouldn't we be getting it back to the kobolds. It seemed kind of important and we didn't exactly leave our guides a note. I'm just saying maybe we should at least message someone."

Listening to the descriptions of prior visitors left her somewhat surprised. Clerics do study writings and have other meetings, but the description doesn't sound quite... clericky enough. And this place seemed more like a place for Ted Talks then a place for "guests" of a god. Maybe? There are days that she misses her old monk knowledge, particularly when ancient religions once again arise during normal missions.

And then, there's the lake... There's certainly a "check me out" vibe, but Pressi remains more focused on the transport points and the idea that they were here for a reason.

"Hey, just out of curiosity. Previous guests... they didn't mention talismans or pyramid temples or giant constructs, did they?"

To Kezzem, "Well, I very much don't want to go fight lake monsters, and I remain opposed to screwing with ecosystems without good reason. So I'm going to place the odds of fighting them at 90 percent." She watches Succotash and Murphy get excited. "95 percent. And since you asked, the plural is Swiftofee." (This is a bluff. Pressi doesn't know anything about any creatures unless she touches one.)

More seriously, she does ask about when the stain started. It's pretty clearly an abberation to the ecosystem in her mind; we don't need a divination for that one.

Pausing for a bite, he asks, "Are there any other living creatures here? Heck, if I wanted bacon and eggs, what would you do? Mookie is eating bugs, so you got those at least."

He looks over at Mookie. The rude bird has asked a moonling to feed him his worms, one by one. "I like you," Mookie says to the moonling, if it did agree to feed the bird. "Do you mind if I call you Mooncalf? Stay close by me, Mooncalf. I got lots for you to do for me."

Auntie did want the talisman, but seemed to be in no rush for it. If we get it to her in a week or two, like as not she and her tribe will be as delighted as if they got it today.

Succotash asks about the oily stain. "Our humblest apologies," one of the moonlings says. "We don't know what's causing it," says another. "We are sorry about the view," says a third. Succotash is willing to take on the lake-monster.

Kezzem is less enthused about the lake-monster.

Murphy asks for the moonlings' names. The one who has been guiding you the longest bows. "This is Unit #34869," it says, one hand on its chest. The moonlings who joined your group on the second floor introduce themselves as Units #29077, #56533, and #40827. He asks for help with finding the lake on his map, but the moonlings are not able to help him.

Tali gets some height to try to look at the dark stain on the lake. It really looks a lot like oil, but you can't be sure from this distance.

Pressi muses that this seems more like a place for Ted Talks than guests of gods, but to be fair, you don't know what gods get up to in their spare time. You ask whether previous guests had mentioned temples or talismans or constructs, and the moonlings take a while to think about it. Finally, Unit #34869 shakes its head. "Not to any of us," it says. You ask when the stain started, and the moonlings tell you it was about three weeks ago.

Bliss asks whether the moonlings could return the group to the Wold, and they say they cannot. You ask if they get bored, and they don't seem to. But one adds that it's more interesting with guests, and the others agree. You ask what would happen if you wanted bacon and eggs, and they say, "we would cook and serve you bacon and eggs." One asks "would you like bacon and eggs?" Then, "how do you like your eggs?" And, "would you like toast with your bacon and eggs?" It takes you a bit to explain that you were just giving an example. Mookie names one of the moonlings "Mooncalf."

You finish hastily and head off to rejoin the group. You stop, however, as you hear activity in the foyer. You look and see that the moonlings are welcoming another guest, a woman with pale blue skin and silver hair.

"You are numerically named? How charming!" Murphy is actually sincere, and thinks that Kerracles had a wonderful sense of humor, and proportion. He works hard to remember each numbered name, and seeks in his memory to attach to whatever distinguishing characteristics of each one to match them to it. He begins to think of different plants - ten different plants, and he orders the 5 digits by assigning the numbered plants to their names.

"So, people study maps. And books. Has your Lord Kerracles any books on the flora and fauna - the plants and animals - of the moon? If so, I should enjoy looking through some. Especially if they have drawings, and descriptions. If there are maps, or atlases, or such, I would love to have them available, too."

I think the folks upstairs may so far be unaware the new arrival?

If they indicate a library, or libraries, exist, he shall avail himself of them for a bit - but not before he says, "Yes, 95% is about right, Pressi."

Once in a library, he takes a couple of minutes to jot down the numeral names, also the ten plants and their numeric associations. Then gets to studying. Unless someone interrupts his plans.

Kezzem asks for pancakes. The moonlings seem confused--not by the pancake request, exactly, but because Kezzem asked Unit #24601 for pancakes, and Unit #24601 is not here. By the time Unit #29077 offers a tentative, "yes, we can make you pancakes," Kezzem has changed his mind.

Murphy asks to be shown to a library. "The library is on the ground floor," says Unit #56533. "Come, I will show you!" [Technically, you should already have seen the library as part of your tour, but your silly DM forgot to mention it.] The moonling leads Murphy toward the stairs.

Pressi decides to tag along after Murphy. She can't remember the group's current goal. You have two at the moment: you need to return the kobold talisman to the kobold village, and you need to figure out how to get back to the Wold so you can do that. At the moment, however, your companions are having fun exploring cool moon stuff, so not a lot is getting done on the goals. But there's really no hurry.

Succotash assures the moonlings that the view is not their fault, and they seem grateful. "You are gracious guests," says Unit #34869.

Tali wants a closer look at the lake. You're about as close as you can get from inside the palace, so to get closer you would need to find an exit. [Or make one, but your DM does not recommend that.] The windows in this room open, and you think they probably open wide enough for a halfling to slip out. Do you go out a window?

Bliss sends Mookie off to the rest of the party. He departs, and Mooncalf does indeed follow him. Bliss introduces himself to the blue-skinned woman. "Hello, Bliss," she replies with a smile. "My name is Kerra."

Just then, Murphy, Pressi, and Unit #56533 appear at the top of the stairs. "And more visitors!" Kerra says. "Welcome!"

Upstairs, Mookie, followed by a single moonling, reaches the rest of the party, which is Kezzem, Succotash, Hobie, and maybe Tali, depending on whether or not she has flown out the window toward the lake. Mookie announces that there is another guest downstairs, although he says it more colorfully than that.

"Oh, where are my manners. I'm an adventurer from the Wold, here with my friends. I'm a fighting witch. I was born a harpy but reincarnated as a halfling. My other friends are halflings by birth. What brings you here?"

Kezzem muses aloud that the moonlings may have some kind of hive mind. Like bees. Or not like bees. What's that other thing?

Miss Kerra, says Bliss, what a coincidence. For two different sets of visitors to arrive on the same day.

"Not a coincidence," she replies with a smile. "I am here because you are here. Lord Kerracles is...indisposed, but someone needed to come here to host his guests. I apologize for being so late to arrive."

Bliss asks how she got here, and she replies that she teleported from a different palace.

Murphy asks whether she visits often. "Not as often as I would like, she replies. "I spend much of my time at a different palace. This one is quite nice, though. Rustic."

Why, you must be a relative of Kerracles himself!

"No, not a relative," she replies. "When I was chosen to serve on Lord Kerracles's staff, I chose this name to honor him."

Hobie, Succotash, Pressi, and Tali also come downstairs. Mookie, his mission accomplished, also returns downstairs, trailed by the inevitable Mooncalf.

"It's nice to meet all of you," Kerra says. Up close, you can see that her features appear half-elven, except that she has that pale-blue skin and silver hair. "I trust that the moonlings have made you all welcome. Please, enjoy your stay here and let me know if I can answer any questions."

As he heads down to rejoin the party, Mookie coaches Mooncalf.

As the bird arrives, Bliss is chatting with the blue lady. "Miss Kerra, you say the master of this palace is 'indisposed' -- but what does that mean really? We thought he was, well, you know, passed the final veil?"

"Yeah," adds Mookie, "Bought the bucket! Shuffled off this moral coil! Kicked the farm! Playing fishies with the concrete boots!"

At an appropriate time, though, we should love to learn more about Lord Kerracles, and this moon, your role here, and how we may be of service."

At some point, once she has had a chance to settle in more, and had a chance to deal with this halfling barrage of queries, he will bring out the map booklet, and see if she might be able to help him understand where they are on the map, and where other castles are located. And if there are particular points of interest. What are the favorite tourist spots? :-) - but that will wait for now. He also plans to ask how she came to serve under Kerracles, and what drew her to this life.

Kezzem asks Kerra, So are you a priestess or some kind of angel or like some guy name Harold or something? She laughs. "Or something," she agrees.

Bliss tries to hint delicately that Kerracles has rung down the curtain and joined the Choir Invisible. He is an ex-god. "He is rumored to be dead," Kerra agrees. The statement does not seem to upset the moonlings at all. "And I haven't seen him in a long time. But, as I'm sure you know, life and death do not mean the same thing to gods that they do to mortals. He is gone, at least for now, but his creations continue."

Mookie is able to make his grand entrance; Mooncalf delivers its line right on cue.

Pressi moves forward to shake Kerra's hand, which she is able to do. You now know a lot about Kerra, which is more than your DM can say. Sometimes DMs just sketch in the bare minimums of NPCs they need, and are not prepared to quote chapter and verse, even when a PC has earned it. You know that she was, at one time, a half-elf, but now she is something...else. Something more. You know that she has some spellcasting ability that seems to encompass both arcane and divine magic. You know that she means you no harm.

Hobie inquires about other guests. "Lord Kerracles has had many guests over the years," Kerra replies, "but there are none at present. Except your group."

Murphy decides to save his many questions for later.

Succotash and Tali ask about the stain in the lake. Tali goes so far as to offer assistance.

"Yes. The stain," Kerra replies. "It is a worry. And since Kerracles has been...unavailable for so long, my own powers are somewhat limited. I would like to conserve them. And the moonlings are unable to leave the palace.

"So," she continues, "if your group would be willing to investigate the stain, determine its source, and correct the situation if possible, I would be very grateful."

Mookie looks downcast when Kerra says the moonlings cannot leave the palace. "Is that really true?" he asks Mooncalf, in a whisper. "Can you leave the palace if you want to?"

"Yes, it is too late in the day to go a-venturing, Brother Succotash" Bliss says. "Let's have dinner and tackle the stain in the morning." He looks around for the sun. "Do you have night and day around here?" he asks.

At dinner, he continues to engage Kerra in conversation. What are the other palaces like? Are there wonders to see? Are there any other people like Kerra? Does she get lonely? What was Kerracles like? What the heck are "generalities" anyway? Was he a halfling? Or did he like halflings best? Does he have any more followers on the Wold? What does she do to keep busy as the years pass by?

For his part, Bliss is happy to tell stories. About the Giant Tower and the trip to Koshe Marr. And the invasion. And about his mom's adventures (with help from Mookie).

After dinner, it is time for entertainment! Bliss shows off his tumbling and flips and walking on his hands and the walls and the ceiling. He asks Sir Kezzem to tell some jokes. Plus, Murphy can sing, Pressi can dance, Succotash plays drums, and Hobie plays the lute. "Come on guys! Perform for us!"

But she can't help but react at the dual spellcasting ability. Not that such abilities are rare, but she certainly expected more along the lines of straight cleric. (Who is this Kerracles, and what is this place for, she wonders.)

For the most part, Pressi remains quiet and lost in thought and observation. She speaks politely to Kerra and the moonlings when spoken to, but teammates can see her trying to act all priestess-like and mysterious in her own right.

So she's not exactly in the mindframe for performing when Bliss announces they will perform. But she pulls it together, that professional training kicking in (Perform 22).

Succotash is excited at the prospect of investigating the lake! And possibly the lake monster! He suggests, though, that the group wait until tomorrow so he can prepare different spells.

This plan seems to suit everyone, so you make preparations to stay the night.

The moonlings show each of you to a guest suite (Pressi has already seen hers). The suites are lavish, tasteful, and comfortable, although the furniture seems to be sized for Big Folk.

That evening, you are served dinner in one of the smaller dining rooms. The moonlings bring you roast chicken, mashed potatoes, and mixed vegetables in a delicate cream sauce. Wine and ale is available with the meal, and everything is sublime.

At dinner, Tali asks Kerra to inform the moonlings that you are allowed to leave. Kerra looks puzzled. "The moonlings should not have tried to keep you here," she says. "They enjoy having visitors to wait on, and are sometimes overly enthusiastic about it, but you should be free to leave. If any of them tried to keep you here, it would indicate a fault in their creation. Do you happen to remember which moonling or moonlings tried to stop you from leaving?"

As the plates are cleared away, Murphy brings out his map. "We are here," Kerra says, pointing, "on Lake Tranquility. There are palaces here, on Telescope Ridge, and here, near the Great Snow Fields, and here, in the Whispering Forest. There are more palaces, but Lord Kerracles prefers that their location remain secret."

Bliss has lots of questions! You learn that the other palaces are much like this one, each with its own staff of moonlings. You learn that there are many wonders on Kerracles; Kerra speaks extensively of the Great Snow Fields where guests could ski and sled and skate. You learn that Kerra is not the only person on Kerracles's staff, but she says that the others aren't really like her. Whatever that means.

Mookie asks the ever-present Mooncalf whether it's true that moonlings can't leave the palace. "Alas, it is true," Mooncalf replies. "I will be unable to accompany you if you leave the palace."

Bliss also seeks to entertain the company with tales, and invites the others to contribute their talents. Succotash drums; Kezzem tells a few jokes; and even Pressi is (eventually) persuaded to participate. Harper explores the dining room curiously. The moonlings ignore him for the most part, but Kerra scritches his ears and under his chin.

The dinner eventually winds down and you retire. In the morning, you make your preparations to investigate the lake. "There are boats in the boat-house," Kerra says, "which you are welcome to use. You have magics that will help you underwater?"

Bliss explains to any offended moonlings that this is MAGIC food, no slight intended. He says when they come back they can have the moonlings prepare a feast.

At breakfast, Bliss brings up the topic of breathing under water. "I'm thinking my OctoBliss form will be useful. Who wants to be polymorphed?"

Mookie is not so pleased with that idea. "Look, Kid, I put up with that from your mom. She turned me into a four-legged gorilla and a gnome, for example. I *like* being a bird. I'll just fly above the lake and keep watch."

Bliss is okay with that.

"Anybody else want to be a large water elemental or a great white shark?"

Pressi can set the palace as her return point for word of recall, but is a tad torn about plans. Polymorphing gives some good movement options but would drastically limit her spellcasting. (She considers alter self lizardfolk - it allows her to hold her breath longer and grants a swim speed while keeping her hands free. Polymorph into a water elemental ends spellcasting but opens some potentially useful options.)

She does the usual rolls of healing and warding, and casts shield of faith on herself before polymorphing.

In the morning, Bliss casts Heroes' Feast and invites Kerra to participate. At Mookie's request, Mooncalf stands nearby. Everyone who partakes, please remember to roll your temporary hit points. They may become relevant.

Succotash offers Water Breathing and Freedom of Movement to anyone who requests them. Hobie can also cast Water Breathing. Your DM reminds you that a single casting of Water Breathing can cover multiple creatures; you just have to do the math.

Harper, for one, will be sitting this one out. Pressi contemplates polymorphing, an approach Bliss also seems to favor.

Tali asks Kerra how she got so pretty, but she only smiles. You ask how the group plans to get to the stain. Boats from the boat-house have been offered; there may be other options.

Notes from the DM: Water Breathing will help. Having a swim speed will also help, especially for characters who like to be mobile in combat. The Swim skill keeps you from sinking, but you move at one-quarter speed. Rules for underwater combat are on the environment page of the PRD; you might want to take a look at them as you prepare and cast your spells.

Bliss explains that while polymorphing is fun and udeful, it does not last so long. "If we're going to be underwater for very long, we'll need water breathing too."

The spell lasts for two hours per level, divided among those touched. So if we use a casting each from Hobie and Succotash, that's 16 plus 32 is 48 hours, split among me, Hobie, Kezzem, Murphy, Succotash, Talia, and Harper, Valerie, Mookie, and Rumpus, that's 4.8 hours each, which is likely fine, right? Plus have another couple prepped in case the adventure goes long or we get dispelled.

"What? I'm not going down there. Why give me one?" asks Mookie.
"Just in case!"

BTW, the usual prep went on before breakfast ... see below.

Bliss is fine with rowing boats out to the stain.

And the dish ran away with the spoon.

Hey diddle diddle
Didja know in the middle
Of that prodigious bovine leap
The cow birthed a calf
Then she started to laugh
And called her calf 'Moonbeam'

He lends his voice and clapping of hands to others' music, and appreciates their dance.

He realizes that he isn't that strong of a swimmer, and questions if he should transform Valerie into an aquatic critter, so he can ride her. he decides to keep his options open for the moment. He enjoys Bliss's hero's breakfast, as does Valerie, and prepares to head out with his friends. He bristles a bit when Bliss asks Lady Kerra for healing magic thinking to himself, "What am I chopped liver?" but then he thinks to himself, "I suppose it doesn't hurt to have options", and he relaxes a bit. Pressi hits Bliss with a CLW wand twice (16 HP). She concurs with taking the water breathing (forgot that even Alter Self is only a few minutes.)

Before Pressi can cast her cures, Bliss stops her. "I was hoping to save the group cures for when we get there. Since Miss Kerra won't be joining us, I thought it would make more sense for her to do a little curing, if she is willing?"

Bliss does not mention his curiousity about her capabilities.

OOC... If Succotash knew anyone was in need of healing, he would have certainly done so before going to bed.

In the morning, Bliss casts some spells, and does some Water Breathing math, accidentally including Harper and Mookie, who are sitting this one out, and Rumpus, who didn't make the trip.

Murphy wonders aloud whether the oil will interfere with breathing underwater, but there's really only one way to find out.

Succotash prepares a couple of Water Breathing spells, and considers using Valerie to help get him through the water.

Bliss had to sacrifice some hit points to cast his spells, and asks Kerra to restore them. This is a smart tactic to preserve party resources for later in the day, but Pressi didn't get the memo and pulls out a wand. Bliss stops her.

"It would be my pleasure," Kerra says, and casts a perfectly ordinary Cure Moderate Wounds to restore Bliss's lost hit points.

Assuming you have no other preparations to make, you step out of the back of the palace and find yourselves on a broad stone terrace overlooking the lake. Wide, shallow stone steps lead down toward the boathouse. The moonlings cluster around you, and the ever-present Mooncalf is following Mookie.

"It was no accident!" declares Bliss. "What if a sea monster appears and drags Mookie under the water?"

"Yeah!" says Mookie. "Safety first! Also, who are you talking to, Kid!?"

"Also, what sea monsters?" The raven looks around anxiously.

"Don't worry, Mooncalf," says Bliss, "You and Mookie will be very safe on the boat, I'm sure. He'll take good care of you. He's been looking out for me my whole life."

Bliss thanks the blue lady and joins his friends in the boathouse. "Does anyone know from boats"? he asks. He looks around at the options for one big enough for everybody to fit in.

"How hard can it be? You just pull on those ... those oar-thingies."

Mookie laughs. "You guys should try the ones you paddle with your feet, if they have any for short guys."

Bliss has an idea! "Mister Murphy, you can change into a water elemental and PUSH the boat, right?"

"Sure, Bliss, I could do that," Murphy replis. "I could also row, preferably in tandem with someone else, as this boat looks made for people bigger than we are. But, water elemental sounds good to me. Or, a giant gar. All right, elemental it is. And get me a rope, and a loop on the end - I think pulling the boat might be better than pushing it. That way I can see what's ahead.

"Before we start, any other things people want to do to get ready?" Murphy asks.
[haven't had a chance to change up my spell list yet - will try to get to tonight.]

Succotash is so excited he jumps into the boat not even considering Valerie. When he realizes his friend hadn't joined him yet, he looks back and sees her on the dock with an unsure look on her face. She reaches towards the boat with one of her talons, only to pull it back right away. Succotash tries reassuring the dino, and after a minute or two of coaxing, Valerie jumps in, almost upsetting the boat. She is shaky at first, but once she gets her sea legs, she almost seems to be enjoying her time in the boat.

Harper shakes her head, mewing loudly. Pressi doesn't push the issue, preferring to leave her behind.

Pressi takes water breathing when offered, but holds off on Polymorph for now. She offers to perform a divination if anyone requests now, before we sail out. She holds off on rowing. Pressi doesn't do rowing, even for a boyfriend.

Finally, she casts arcane eye past the front of the boat. She intends to keep it just ahead to assist in navigation, among the usual scouting and investigations.
