Mindslaver Mold Mission

DM Hugh - Trouble on the vine
Friday July 3rd, 2020 11:06:50 PM

Zazu asks Delilah for the location of the Star Mages Guild. He then says he’s in to rescuing the fungi infected people regardless of what the council thinks. He asks the others what they think.

Sigismund is not as enthusiastic as Zazu and tries to use the request as a bargaining chit to get some gold, autonomy and a tax break.

Naithi is surprised how things work in the city, reasoning to do it because it is the right thing to but thinks perhaps that is not the way things are done.

Zazu suggests to Sigismund that they shouldn’t be bargaining like that.

Ash says she is in too and then asks Zelphar if it would look bad if they did this for Mastakara and if maybe it shouldn’t be well known? However regardless of how it looks or how widespread knowledge becomes she still wants to do it.

Ash recalls that mindslaver molds have all the traits plants normally have as well as the ability to see well in dim light. She also knows that cold doesn’t affect them, acid isn’t very effective and they have a minor resistance to spells. Lastly she knows they heal fast and their spores cause wisdom damage.

Lothlo tries to think about what he may know about the mold. He also puts his vote in to help.

Lothlo remembers that Mindslaver Mold isn’t really native to this area. He does remember hearing about it from a traveler once and that if the mold already has a host non-infested people typically don’t have to worry about being dominated by it since it already used its ability to do so for the day.

Zelpher seems amused at Sigismund’s demands. “You seem to misunderstand. I am not hiring you to do a job, merely suggesting opportunity to you. Besides which this is no dictatorship where I make the rules as I please and I could not give you most of your requests if I wanted to.

Should you decide to do it on your own initiative it would endear you to Mastakara and impress the council with your heroics. You may even earn a cash reward as you requested and can try to bargain for the other things, though I doubt you’d gain much traction with the rest of the council. As homesteaders you’ll already have large amounts of autonomy and fewer taxes anyway.”

To Ash he says, “Well while the Vineyard belongs to Mastakara the mold enslaved Vintners are people in need. Yes, clearing the Vineyard of the infestation helps Mastakara’s business and her supply of the strong wine that Dwarves in the Emerald Kingdom are fond of since the ale here isn’t as strong as true Dwarven Ale but it could literally save the life of citizens of the Emerald Kingdom. You are poised to save the day in a meaningful way and if your involvement was found out I’d say it would only help your case. You strangers to the Emerald Kingdom risked life and limb to save the lives of some of its citizens when you didn’t have to. If anyone raised a stink about who the vineyard belonged to I think public opinion would break in your favor and Mastakara’s misfortune would just be seen as a coincidence. However if you want to play it close to the vest we still can.”

He then says, “Since you seem to be resolved to help we can send you out to the Vineyard either now or at first light. You would still have hours before the council meeting if we delayed until the morrow.”

"We should go now," says Zazu, "Right after we get all our gear and such. And cast a couple spells. Maybe we will need the extra time, who knows?"

The elf rogue turns to Zelpher. "Excuse me sir, but what's the chance we can get our hands on some things to help us not kill people who are controlled by fungi? Rope, nets, saps, manacles, like that?"

Then Zazu ponders what she knows about nature, and also asks Ash and Lothlo and Naithi. Is there any good to wearing masks or cloths on our noses and faces? To stop the spores? [OOC: Maybe even for a +1 or +2 circumstance bonus to saves?]

Does holding one's breath help? [OOC: There are rules for that if it is worth a try.]

And just to be clear -- we can tell the fungi-controlled from the non-infected just by looking at them?

Zazu's Know Nature: 13 or 17 if it is Culverwood-relevant.

Just before entering the gate, Zazu casts a Mage Armor and connects the entire party via Message spells.

Ash shares what she knows of the molds.

"It's a tricky one, Zazu. We may need the extra time, but they can see better than us in low-light, so at this time of the evening may have us at a disadvantage. I wouldn't want any of the people to get hurt because we couldn't see properly"

"Staying the night might also mean I could learn that color spray spell from you. Seems like a good way to subdue people without hurting them."

She's happy to go at whatever the consensus is.

"It won't take all night to put that spell in your book, Ash. And with that fancy wizarding ring you got, you can even cast it right away!" Zazu sits down with Ash for an hour or so to help transcribe the spell.

From your explanation I am assuming this is going to be purely non-lethal combat and I should avoid using my bow... this should provide an interesting challenge. I need five minuets to grab a non-lethal weapon such from the catacombs in that case... I'm afraid I just don't have the skills to with a melee weapon to be effective if I'm trying to figure out to use it non-lethaly on the fly.

"It feels dishonest to help because it may win a vote in our favor.. but knowing of the plight we wil help anyways" Niall says and is ready to go whenever.

DM Mitch
Monday July 6th, 2020 7:37:30 PM

Zazu suggests they leave now after they get gear and such. He asks about getting their hands on things that can help them not killed people who are controlled by fungi. He then tries to think of what he knows of the fungi.

Zazu knows that the mold when attached to a person looks kind of like a twisty mass all over their back and shoulders. He also knows that the spores are more of a contact thing than an inhalent so a mask would only really help if the spores were touching one’s face and even then it is debatable if cloth would prevent the particles from touching one’s face. Also besides the plant having the ability to launch the spore pods at a distance touching them with unarmed attacks, natural attacks or touch attacks exposes someone to them.

Ash suggests staying the night to not let the mold’s low-light vision give it an advantage. She also wants to take the time to learn color spray.

Zazu counters that it wouldn’t take all night to learn color spray and helps her transcribe it into her spellbook.

Lothlo asks if the combat is to be nonlethal and if he could have time to run and buy a nonlethal weapon.

Niall says it feels dishonest to help because it may help win a vote in their favor but the plight of the groundskeepers means they will help anyway.

Zelphar says, “Take time to make whatever preparations you need. As for whether the combat is to be nonlethal well ideally you want to kill the mold but spare the host. Conceivably if you knocked out pinned or otherwise incapacitated the host you would have an easier time hitting the mold but plants are immune to paralysis, sleep and stun among other things and as I said these plants can move a little independently of their hosts and dodge a little allowing you to potentially hit their host so I mean it would probably go better for the host if you used nonlethal attacks even when targeting the mold at least until you knocked the plant unconscious but even then you would have to kill it in order to remove it without hurting the host. Though I mean these groundskeepers despite being elves are fairly experienced and somewhat toughened so they would likely survive the damage tearing out a living mold would do providing they didn’t take too much accidental lethal damage directed at their mold. I mean don’t take this as me being callous but wounds can heal; death typically is more permanent so if the groundskeepers survived the ordeal even if wounded a little I don’t think Mastakara would be angry. Now if one were to go in and wantonly slaughter plant and elf alike well while she’d be glad to be rid of the infestation she’d certainly be ornery about the loss of her people.”

When the subject of gear to subdue people is brought up Castien says, “Tell me what you need within reason and I can see to it that it will be waiting for us in the teleportation room at Emissary HQ. The only thing I ask is that you try not to break the items you borrow and you return them when done.”

Time is taken to help Ash learn a spell, a list is compiled of some things that would help the party with their mission and Castien dispatches another runner.

When everyone is ready to go Castien calls for Delilah. ”These young heroes heard of the Mindslaver Mold problem and think they can help. It would save us from having to spend the time on it and be less likely to end in unfortunate deaths then if the guard dealt with it. I think they can do it at least, if we can just drop them off there.”

Delilah looks surprised at the request. ”What, now? All of the teleportation staves are in use tonight. We’ve got Lellania over in Perpagui, Delver at the Tree of Parting, and Windrunner is resupplying our reagents at the Float. No one expected anyone to need the staves till morning.”

Castien thinks for several moments. ”What about Morgana?”

Delilah shakes her head. ”Dealing with some giants near Fort Peace. They’ve been raiding again.”

Castien shakes his head. ”Sorry guys, it looks like this will have to wait until morning after all. It should still be in plenty of time though. You can make plans and gather equipment tonight at least.”

"Just as well," Zazu comments, "I bet those fungi would be immune to my silent images anyway. I'll take a mage armor, two color sprays, and if Siggy wants it, an enlarge person."

"Siggy, would you want an enlarge? How about anyone else?"

If no one wants the enlarge, Zazu will take a reduce person.

He puts in a request for silk rope and manacles. And a sap.

Ash has no trouble copying the spell from Zazu's spellbook into her own. (Highlight to display spoiler: {Scribing cost subtracted from her gp})

"I'm not sure they would be immune to Silent Images, Zazu. It might good a good spell to have as a 'just in case'. Would you mind if I copied that as well? Perhaps that Obscuring Mist spell too?" There's actually a few handy spells there.

In that spirit, Ash is prepared to share her book with Zazu to see if there is anything there that he might like.

She doesn't have any requests for equipment. She'd more than likely end up hurting only herself with a sap. The only things she needs is to have some spells in her spellbook.

The elf plans to cast enlarge on Siggy and Naithi. And to cast mage armor and a color spray. And to wade in there with sap and manacles and rope.

"Will we be in battle the moment we arrive, Sir Zelphar?"

Then it is time to recharge. Zazu rests better cuddling with Boyo. [OOC: Do elves sleep in PF?]

DM Mitch
Tuesday July 7th, 2020 10:16:17 PM

Lothlo requests a masterwork sap.

Zazu suggests it is just as well they are forced to wait considering the mold might be immune to his silent image. He discusses his spell preparations for tomorrow and requests silk rope, some manacles and a sap.

Ash copies the spell from Zazu’s book and asks about silent image and obscuring mist offering reciprocal trade with the elf.
Niall requests a sap too.

Naithi requests an enlarge person spell from Zazu and a sap from the emissaries. She also asks for specifics on the mold.

Zelphar says, “It isn’t edible. It spreads through hitting people with its spores till they are immobile and then attaches or dominates their host. We don’t know why it spread to Mastakara’s vineyard.”

Sigismund comments on how the emissaries/guards are squandering tax payer funds and refusing to do their jobs, asks Zazu for an enlarge and then shows them his hammer and his plans to trip their opponents up.

Castien replies to Sigismund’s criticism, ”If we dispatched someone like Vulmer, myself or Delilah we could probably accidentally kill the groundskeepers. We could send more junior members but then we’d have to divert resources from other scheduled missions. The guards are afraid of killing the groundskeepers and getting on Mastakara’s bad side. They live local to the location of her vineyard and when Mastakara isn’t in the Emerald City she is often to be found there so Mastakara could make life for the guards quite unpleasant if she wanted to.”

Zazu thanks Ash for the spell-swapping offer and says he will take her up on that another day. He also vows to give her the other spells in the future but if she isn’t going to use them in the morning he’d prefer she wait. He asks Zelphar if they expect combat the moment the party arrives. He then makes sure he scribes a scroll and beds down with Boyo.

(OOC: per my research it appears that the whole trance thing was a 3.5 thing. Apparently whether elves trance or sleep depend on the setting so in the Wold do Elves Sleep or Trance or has this ever been addressed? I’ve posted a question in the rules board asking for the esteemed opinion of the Wold)

Zelphar says to Zazu before leaving, ”The plan is to teleport to the gates of the vineyard which have been somewhat sealed to the public by the guard. We’d explain to the guards that you were deputized by the emissaries to deal with the infestation and they’d let you through. You’d then have to find the 4 elven groundskeepers parasitized by the mold and free them of their affliction. Also sweep the vineyard for any other signs of the mold that didn’t yet find a host. We don’t know if there were only 4 or if there could be more so best to be careful.”

Since you aren’t leaving tonight you could probably visit the guilds you were interested in. Preparations are made and the party settles down for a rest and at first light minus a little time for preparations the party is ready to set out or they would have been but there is a commotion in the common room. Apparently Náro the half-elf sorcerer decided to rejoin the party after all and caught a ride on a merchant wagon into the city. He tried to find you all yesterday but to no avail. He too got up early looking to find you and was directed to check the Elder Treant Inn where you run into each other.

Scribing two 1st level spells takes just as much effort as to scribe one 2nd level spell. In the space of 2hrs Ash has both Obscuring Mist and Silent Image in her spellbook.

She enjoys another good night's rest and wakes with a smile. Soft, warm beds. She could get used to this.

Ash stretches and washes her face before heading to the common room. Ash is a little surprised - yet happy - to see Naro again. The more people on this mission the better.

"WLA sounds like a good idea, Lothlo. Anyone else want to join us?" It will certainly be a very quick visit. No time for training today.

All thoughts of wizarding fly out of Zazu's head as the elf stows away the new scroll -- because of the arrival of an old friend!

"Náro!" Zazu exclaims, "It is great to see you here!" After a hug, Zazu asks for news and offers an account of all that has happened. And especially, that Náro has arrived just in time to help with this mission.

The mold, the poor people affected by it, the need to save them ... "-- so don't kill anybody!" Zazu concludes.

I'm Sigismund Brauer, but y'all can call me Siggy. Pleased as punch to meet ya. Yer Náro? I hope I'm sayin' that right. Nah-ro? Nay-ro? Náro is glad to receive a warm welcome from his fellows, and smiles slightly shyly at all the attention he's getting. He listens attentively to the account of what he's missed out on, and says, 'It really is great timing that I managed to get here just in time to help with the mind-slaver mold.' He turns to Siggy and tells him, 'and, uh, my name is pronounced Nah-ro, and you're right-- it does have an accent.'

Lothlo talks to Ash about hitting the WLA.

Ash agrees on the WLA and does some spell scribing. She asks if anyone else wants to hit the WLA.

Zazu gets distracted by his enthusiastic greeting to an old friend.

Naithi is also happy to see Naro and invites him to join them at the WLA.

Sigismund is pleased to make a new friend and wonders how it’s pronounced.

Naro is pleased by the enthusiastic greetings all around and clarifies how to pronounce his name. (please at HP and AC to header as well)

Lothlo, Ash, and any others interested head to the WLA. Murzush comes along to, just to find out what it is as she’d never heard of it. Like many of the buildings in the center of town it’s delicate and artful looking with graceful curves and polished wood. It’s open and inside it’s pretty quiet, with a groggy halfling receptionist peering at them in the dim sunlight shining through the windows. It takes her a few moments to follow what the group is asking.

”You want to join, at this hour?” At their conformation and a bit of grumbling she gets up and heads to the back. It takes several minutes for her to return, grumbling and looking put out as she drops into her chair heavily. ”The usual people who do this aren’t here but whatever, I guess I’ll do it. Put up your right hand and say, “I, insert name here, do solemnly swear to uphold the ideals of the League, to protect the innocent and combat evil wherever I may find it.” and your in. Normally they’d ask why you want to join and yada yada but if you want the whole ceremony and training come back at something more reasonable.”

Murzush looks rather put out by the whole thing. ”Ummm, I had some questions?” The halfling waves dismissively. ”Too bad, my shift was supposed to end over an hour ago and I’m too tired to care. Come back later you can ask your questions then.”

After anyone who’s interested says the oath she pulls out some dusty badges from a drawer and tosses them onto the counter in front of the group. One slides off onto the floor. ”Congrats, welcome to the league, now go away and come back later.”
After that rude dismissal everyone gathers again and is ready to leave. Castien and Delilah escort the party(including Náro) and Murzush through the city back to the Emissary HQ and the teleportation room. At least some of the staves have been returned and recharged so Delilah is able to use the teleportation circle to take some of the party to the vineyard. It takes 2 trips but eventually Zazu, Sigismund, Ash, Lothlo, Niall, Niathi, Murzush and Náro make it to the gates of the Vineyard.

Delilah introduces you to the guard captain and you are given permission to enter the Vineyard. From what you can see outside the gate rows upon rows of grape vines trail off into the distance.

As the group teleports to the vineyard, Lothlo gives his sap a few test swings.
This is going to take some getting used to... I really need to invent some sort of arrow with a boxing glove at the tip instead of an arrow tip, I'd be much more comfortable trying to use that... though I suppose that's a lot of weight to carry for something it's unlikely I'd use in most circumstances. I suppose I'll take middle as well. I don't need the same line of sight today, but I'm still not really dressed for a head on encounter.

DM Hugh - Tough Grapes

Zazu prepares for battle and asks about marching orders.
Ash claims her badge and tells the Halfling they won’t let the WLA down. She forgets to say the oath. The halfling cares not. At the vineyard she also mage armors and talks about marching orders.
Lothlo wonders how he could make arrows non-lethal and thinks about boxing glove arrows. He does remember to say the oath.

Delilah casts Haste on the entire party (It will last 16 rounds). ”I may not be able to help directly but I can still help. If I joined you in the direct combat my main option would be to blast them with magic which risks killing the workers. Good luck.”

You enter the gate and fan out. Inside the vineyard you can see there are gaps between plants in some of the rows that are large enough to move between. Actually, I think them not come would be ideal. Better if we are able to set the terms of the fight. But if that stuff is smart enough to dodge and have us hit the host, it's probably smart enough to either attack or flee.

Lothlo gives a quick glance around at the vinayard to determine whether these are the only workers in the area or whether there are others farther down that could come running if it hears combat.

Camalayaas and I quickly prepare, but now that I see the terrain I regret me decision to be enlarged. Flaming will be difficult. Perhaps riding Camalayaas would have been the better choice.

I check to make sure the gloves from my explorers outfit are in, so I do not touch the mold and cover my face and any other exposed skin with my old slave rags. I prefer controlling the field having them come to us, but will follow Niall so we are not separated.

Sigismund shoulders his hammer and asks if the plan is to lure em’ out one at a time or rush them.

Zazu activates a scroll of enlarge person on Naithi and tells Siggy he is next unless the taur doesn’t want it as it might make things difficult to maneuver. The elf’s sharp eyes do not detect anything hidden.

Niall moves slowly forward.

Naithi takes her part with the others, instructing Fizzgig not to participate in combat. Himalayas and her quickly prepare but seeing the terrain she regrets the decision to be enlarged. She makes sure she’s wearing her gloves and tries to identify any weaknesses the plants may have as she follows after Niall.

Naithi doesn’t find any weaknesses but she does realize a few things that weren’t previously discussed. The molds can telepathically talk to each other over large distances, the range increment of their spore attack is 20 feet and they have SR 14)
(OOC: Is Fizzgig on the other side of the gate or still in the vineyard with you?)

Náro suggests having the mold-infested grounds keepers come to them as it would make them have less cover and it would be easier to attack non-lethally.

Ash opines having them come would be preferable but they likely won’t if they are intelligent. Ash moves 15 feet east and prepares to cover Niall with a magic missile. (OOC: if your spell triggers roll to overcome spell resistance)

Lothlo prefers not having the mold come to them. He makes sure the vineyard is empty then readies to defend himself should they get rushed.

The 2 mold slaver infested elves on the right move a little and then fire off some spore pods from mold currently resting on the shoulders of their hosts. Both target Niall. The mold on elf 1 is way off base but the mold on elf 4 manages to hit Niall at range(20 vs touch). A concentrated ball of spore the size of a sling bullet slams into Niall. It doesn’t appear to do any damage but Niall can feel the spores touch him (Niall : DC 15 Fort save or take 3 points of wisdom damage)

Meanwhile the 2 on the left move a little forward and launch spore pods of their own, both targeting Siggy. As is the case with the other two one of the mold’s aim was off but the other’s aim is true and the sling bullet sized spore ball hits the minotaur as well(14 vs touch; Siggy : DC 15 fort save or take 4 points of wisdom damage)

IF SIGGY SAYS YES TO THE ENLARGE: Zazu casts the enlarge on the minotaur (+2 Str, -2 Dex, grow to huge size for 20 rounds), then dashes 60 ft behind the party and up the far side. At the 60 ft mark, Zazu ducks down at the base of the vines so that the elf no longer has line of sight. (100% concealment? Total cover?). If crouching gets that done, great. If needed, Zazu drops prone.

IF SIGGY SAYS NO TO THE ENLARGE: Zazu runs 60 ft as a move action. then shoots an illusionist school blinding ray at the nearest human. A ranged touch hits touch AC8, a miss. Unfortunately, it appears he is now too large to squeeze between the rows of vines without trampling them. "Well hell's bells! That was an unferseen consequence! Go ahead'n get behind me! Those shamblin' things're gonna get walloped if they get thirty feet from me!"

Zazu enlarges Sigismund as he collects the wayward Boyo who nibbled a grape he gets the impression that these particular grape vines grow particularly thick.
Ash dazes a worker.
Lothlo follows behind Naithi.
Niall manages to resist the attack and moves up.
Siggy also resists the attack but is not happy that being enlarged reduces his ability to maneuver but he offers to act as a bulwark for the others suggesting he’d wallop whatever gets within 30 feet of him. He could probably move very carefully to not disturb them, but it would make fighting harder (you can squeeze through, half movement and -4 to hit and AC.)
Náro fires off some magic missiles. One of the missiles fizzles but the other one slams into mold 3.

Murzush fires off two magic missiles of her own, both targeting mold 3 only to have both missiles fizzle out against the spell resistance.

Worker 1 is dazed, but the mold on it can still fire a spore pod. It does so at Niall - he has to save vs dc 15 fortitude or take 2 wisdom damage. Niall gets an attack of opportunity against it.

Mold / Worker 4 also attacks Niall (20 vs AC; 1 damage) and manages to stab the human weakly with a dagger, drawing some blood.

Mold/Workers 2 and 3 move up to get closer to the enlarged Taur and fire off more spore pods at Siggy reducing their range penalties in the process. Both hit the enlarged Taur (who is proving to be an easy target) - 11 vs Touch; 16 vs touch with their spore pods and he has to make 2 DC 15 Fort saves or take 2 and 3 wisdom damage respectively.

If the molds are not immune to illusions / mind-affecting stuff, here are SR rolls: 17 and 15 means that both molds' SR is not effective.

Oh gosh! I keep forgetting Zazu's 5% spell failure chance wearing that buckler. I better roll three, including two retroactives for the enlarges ... crossing fingers ... Gosh darn it, an 02! That means the color spray this round was a complete bust!

Niall manages to whack the mold. It tries to shift out of the way but he’s too quick for it.
Sigismund’s mind is heavily affected by the mold but his accuracy is not. He throws a javelin and it scraps along the side of the third elf tearing off chunks of the mold but leaving the elf untouched.
Naro goes for Magic Missile again landing some damage this time
Lothlo encourages Naithi to jump in and rushes forward.
Naithi tries to just pull off the mold. She succeeds. The still alive mold immediately starts trying to cover her so it can enslave her as well. (my bad, gloves don’t protect - rule says when a creature hits the mold with a touch attack, unarmed strike, or natural attack they make a save; however we will award a +1 circumstance bonus to your save for the gloves)

Murzush casts a magic missile and finishes off Mold 3.

Mold 1 writhes in Naithi’s hands finding cracks in her armor. It succeeds, but she gets an AoO. DC 15 fortitude or take 3 wisdom damage.

Mold 2 abandons it’s weak elven victim, casting Dominate Person on Sigismund. He has to make a will save of 16 or be mind controlled by the mold (Wis 3 means you get -4 to the save, don’t forget you have hero points, +8 if you use before you roll, +4 if you roll first)

Elf 2 falls to the ground unconscious as the mold releases it’s mental control over him, though it still infests his body to use as a shield.

Elf 3 falls to the ground unconscious as its parasitic mold is dead but still attached.

When Zazu is flanking, the delayed dagger attack is at the mold. Hits AC23 with a nat 19. Crit threat follow up hits AC6 no crit. Damage is 2 to the mold, and if the sneak att damage applies, another 5 for 7 total.

Regardless, she positions herself next to it.

"Anyone want to try taking it off that poor man's head? You can throw it in here" She holds the sack open.

Lothlo asks if there is any reason to put the mold in a sack instead of just killing it. He then attempts to remove the mold (OOC: roll a strength check; if you beat DC 15 the mold is removed; that eats up your standard action for the turn so you don’t get an attack)

Zazu tries and fails to whack a mold with the sap.

Naithi places the mold in a sack thinking of the dinner she can make with it later before moving close to mold 2

Lothlo rejects the idea of eating a mold meal.

I think it's safe to say there isn't a viable way to cultivate the mold, otherwise we'd have seen it domesticated centuries ago. Even if you succeeded, the danger of a stray spore one day enslaving you would be too risky to be worth it.

I help to bag #2 as well, and then call Camalayaas back over. (She wasn't on the map, but since she uses only natural attacks I figured Naithi would not call her over and put her in danger).

If all of the elves are unconscious I will try to take a cutting from some of the plants as well as enough grapes core casting good berry spells, and then will examine the elves for injuries, spores, pods, etc as well as sucking l subtly checking to see if there is anything on their person that might point to why they were attacked. (Naithi is not robbing them or taking personal belongings).

Lastly I will look for the spent pods and where the mold came from in hopes of collecting samples for both culinary (think blue cheese) as well as tactical reading (traps, poisoning weapons, etc).

DM Mitch
Friday July 24th, 2020 7:34:11 AM

Niall tells Ash he honestly doesn’t remember her instructions about catching the one they were fighting.
Ash makes a sigh and walks down to the end of the aisle. She asks if anyone managed to bag one, though she doesn’t know how they’ll go about questioning it.
Zazu bags the one Naro’s magic missiles helped to subdue. He tells Ash, the witch he has one by him. He suggests trying to combine the mold with sheep to cultivate it, maybe getting the help of an alchemist or a green mage. He has his bunny on guard duty with the captured mold. The elf then tries to help the unconscious elf vintners.
(OOC: Is the bunny going to nip the bag with the mold in it every so often? If so have it roll vs the wisdom damage every time with a circumstantial +2 on the fort save due to the mold being in the cloth sack. Remember these things have fast healing and are sentient, so unless steps are taken to render it unconscious continuously the mold will most likely attempt to escape the confinement of the bag)

Lothlo suggests there is not a viable way to cultivate the mold or else it would have been done already and he also suggests that the risks of having one run amok with its spore pods and domination abilities would be too great.

Náro agrees against cultivation, but says he’s heard the molds are good eating and helps with the mold or healing the unconscious elves.

Naithi takes some grapes to turn into magic healing berries and examines the workers. As far as she can tell they’re just normal elves. The only injuries sustained are from the moss being pulled off or any hits the party accidentally landed on them aside from their unconsciousness which given your own run in is likely spore induced.

The day is won. You have 4 unconscious elf vintner’s spread across the part of the vineyard you were doing battle in (2 on each side) and a still potentially unconscious Siggy (OOC: Fort save was never rolled; unless someone is posting for Tanner in which case feel free to roll the Fort Save vs DC 15 to see if the taur retains some of his dwindling wisdom and does not go comatose)

You also were tasked with making sure that there are no further signs of the mindslaver molds in the vineyard. Your immediate area is completely clear save for the bagged one being guarded by the bunny and potentially your sorcerer but it is a big vineyard so you can’t say for certain with just the part you were in if it is completely clear of infestation or if there might be more of them hiding elsewhere in the vineyard.

Naithi (JamesD) AC: 19/14/17 HP: 18/18 , CMD = 16
Friday July 24th, 2020 1:49:01 PM

Ooc: Did Naithi also get her cuttings? They would be small an inconspicuous. Her goal would be potentially cross it with wild grapes from the Culverwood to create something new for a local vineyard.

She doesn't want to necessarily run the vineyard, but would like one in the settlement, and she wouldn't mind having one of the wines named after her. I would be more than happy to give both the cutting and cross species to Sig (if he's interested in producing wine, brandy or cognac).

Boyo sends irritation to Zazu through their empathic link, as well as resistance to the idea of biting the thing. So Zazu returns and hits the mold in the bag with the sap every round. (If we count that as a nonlethal coup de gras, then that's average 7 nonlethal every round, which should keep it down pretty well.)

Zazu makes a raspberry at Lothlo's "can't be done because someone else would have done it already" argument. "By that reasoning, no one should ever try to do anything new. No way!"

The elf is already pondering a resetting mechanical trap that is a box with a heavy padded lid on top, and it simply triggers every other round and drops the lid on the target within to deal nonlethal damage. Just put the mold in a contraption like that, let it get pounded every other round, and that keeps it subdued forever. Whenever you want more mold for a savory dish or to make wisdom poison, open the box, cut away a quarter of the mold inside to use, and let the thing regenerate back before switching the falling lid back on.

Zazu carefully gets ready to transport the mold while others search the rest of the vineyard. "Boyo has got their scent, and he'll help you check for any that are unaccounted for."

Does someone have a low level heal spell we can use on one of the elves? They can likely tell us the extent of the infestation if they wake up, especially if there was a telepathic link between the mold. If not, I can use a potion to restore their health and ask how many people are here, how many infected, and if anyone is safe but hiding.

Once the moss is double-bagged Ash feels a little better. Hopefully that reduces how many spores can escape. "With no teeth or claws I can't see how it could break a sack. It should be pretty safe in there". If the only thing the spores can do is hurt someones wisdom then they won't be able to do any 'lethal' damage to an object is her reasoning. She ties some rope around the top of the sack for good measure and leaves some trailing so they can drag the sack behind them if it keeps letting off spores.

"I'm not sure how I feel about continually hurting something sentient. It feels, well, it feels a little like torture." Ash is a little uncomfortable raising the subject "Couldn't we just interrogate it and let it go?"

She leaves that for a moment and looks to Lothlo "I have a few cure spells. I'll give it a try." Going with Lothlo's suggestion Ash will cast CLW on the elf that looks the least beat up. Elf #2 looks like a good prospect.

Natihi reflects on her future plan for the settlement perhaps working with Siggy on some projects. She then takes a little time and cuts a small piece of one of the vines and sticks it in a flask with water. She thinks she did it right providing she can either plant it in the ground or graft it to another plant soon enough. She then calls one of her animals over to her and they start the task of searching the vineyard.

Zazu returns to the plant and waps it over the head in the bag with the sap every so often. (OOC: fast healing is different from regeneration so enough lethal damage could kill it; You guys knew about the fast healing so 7 damage every 3 or 4 rounds should be enough to keep it down w/o killing it) He rejects Lothlo’s comment about farming the mold and ponders a device that would keep the mold perpetually subdued. Zazu lends Boyo to the others to search for more mold as he prepares the mold they caught for transport.
Siggy is passed out

Lothlo asks if anyone has a spell to awaken the elves in order to quickly determine if there were more molds than what they’ve accounted for.

(OOC: ability damage requires either time 1 point per day recovered or the use of a restoration spell to recover)

Ash moves around to the beat up elves healing them. She manages to treat their wounds but they seem to be suffering the same affliction that Siggy is. She doesn’t think that perpetually whapping a sentient plant creature is a good idea as it sounds like torture to her and wonders if they can just question it and let it go.

Niall attempts to use his lay upon hands on the elves. He heals their damage but doesn’t restore consciousness the same as his friends attempts.

Náro argues against the idea of letting the mold go considering its name. He too tries to help the elves and sees that maybe if he took the kit and had them in a better setting with dedicated care he could perhaps speed their recovery a little so that they would recover their depleted wisdom twice as fast but this place isn’t setup correctly for long term care.

You scour the vineyard looking for any trace of workers; mold or how the mold managed to get there. You don’t find any additional workers nor mold but you do manage to track the mold’s point of entry to a particularly large tree near the border of the vineyard and then the trail just stops. You don’t know if maybe the mold moved through the treetops and then climbed down or if maybe they took a different route and they stopped by that tree but the scent trail is too diminished beyond it. Regardless you seem to have taken care of three molds permanently and captured another as well as rescuing all 4 elven vintners though they are unconscious and depleted of wisdom like Siggy but otherwise healthy after all the magical energy you pumped into them.

"Who says it is sentient? Seems to me, Ash, the question is, does the mold think on its own, or only when it is stealing another creature's brain? Maybe that's a question for a druid. What do you think, Naithi?"

"Heck, I suppose we should know even more. Niall, can you detect for evil on the mold now that it is not connected to anybody?"

"But on the other hand, it did smack me a couple times, so my own mind may not be running at 100 percent!"

"Certainly we should get back in time to get Siggy on his feet and not be late to the Council meeting."

Zazu looks around. "How do we get back again?"

The elf keeps up a routine of hitting the bagged mold with the sap to do more nonlethal damage every round.

Zazu hefts the bag and tries to gauge the weight of it. Continuing musing ... "Hey, good idea Boyo! If it is edible and it heals itself fast, then maybe we can cut off some every minute and end up feeding a lot of people! Fast healing is a sweet way to get something from nothing! It's magic! Maybe we can try detecting poison and purifying food on it. Later."

It is able to dodge our attacks, control others in more than a rudimentary fashion, an since they were grouped together I imagine they can communicate with themselves. I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of have mind or queen controls everything with individuals having a lesser degree is consciousness.

Siggy continues to snore.
Zazu asks if the mold really is sentient and defers to Naithi. He then asks Niall to detect evil on it. He mentions the fact that he may have been smacked a couple of times and thusly not thinking 100 percent clearly. He asks how they are going to get back and wake Siggy in time for the council meeting. He suggests the fast healing may allow them to eat it and hefts the bag finding that it isn’t that hard to lift (OOC: how about 20 pounds)
Naithi points out that it can dodge attacks and control others as well as most likely communicate. She speculates that the mold might have some sort of queen running everything or a hivemind and that if they talked to it, it could glean information on them. She also points out she can’t cast speaks with plants yet.

Niall points out how even if it isn’t evil their acts were and that he isn’t feeling himself. The mold does not radiate evil but that doesn’t necessarily mean the plant isn’t evil. Generally unless something is undead or an evil outsider things that are we weak don’t radiate an aura.

Ash apologizes to Niall for not having the ability to heal the wisdom damage. Ash suggests they hold off beating the mold for a while and she tries talking to it, telling it not to struggle unless it wants to get beaten into unconsciousness.

Lothlo is against letting it wake up.

Náro relays Ash’s message with a message spell.

Whether it can understand language is debatable but it stops moving around after Niall and Ash talk to it.

You have killed or captured the molds and rescued the elves who lay there like Siggy unconscious. The gate to the vineyard beckons having been the way you came in.

As for how to get back you remember Delilah used the staff to get you there.

Considering you have done all you really could here you head out the gate to report back to Delilah who is standing outside the gate of the Vineyard with the local constabulary and a human woman in green robes with a variety of wooden vials that appear to be sprouting leaves worn about her person. She has crimson hair and a warm smile.

Delilah asks, “So how’d it go? This here is Nelly. She’s a greenmage in the emissary corp who was stationed near here. She was sent for because of her specialties in dealing with plant based creatures but it seems like you have things under control. Well aside from your minotaur and the groundskeeper being unconscious. Nelly you want to do something about that?”

Nelly smiles and says, “sure” and goes around administering things from the wooden vials to Siggy and the Elvish vintners.

It may have taken several doses of her concoctions but eventually Siggy and all the elves are fully recovered.

She asks the other adventurers, “Was anyone else affected by the spores but not as badly as your minotaur friend or the elven workers? I have plenty of doses of my herbal tea of lesser restoration available.”
To anyone that needed it the tea is not unpleasant, it tasted somewhat like a green tea blend but with a pleasant subtle berry taste to lessen the bitterness normally associated with a green tea.

Nelly asks, “Would you like me to take that mindslaver mold you captured off your hands? I could see to it that it wouldn’t get loose to enslave anyone else.”

Delilah says, “Let me know when you want to head back.”

"If it is not sentient, what's the harm? And if it is, well, this is still arguably a fate better than death, and no less than what it deserves."

Also, if we are to keep it, how to maintain it in health.

Carrying around a live and potentially dangerous mold might be irresponsible. Taking it back to the Emerald City could be asking for trouble, especially if it were to escape.

Zazu bows to the greenmage and sips her tea then questions the green mage about the mold.

Niall is still against the idea of keeping the mold. He voices he is ready to return.

Naithi asks about the risks of handling the dead mold.

Ash observes that the party appears divided on the topic of the mold and mulls the possibility of it escaping. She waits to hear the answers to Zazu’s questions.

Lothlo accepts the tea and feels his head get less fuzzy. He is in agreement that perhaps the mold is better off in the care of the green mage; since less can go wrong that way.

Náro does not take any tea as he managed to avoid getting hit by any spore pods. He does however voice his support for giving the mold to the green mage.

Nelly starts answering questions. “Well I suppose cheese is a form of mold, but I don’t know if I would necessarily eat mindslaver mold, though I don’t think anything is necessarily stopping you from doing so besides its spore pods. I mean if you were going to cultivate it in the way you describe you’d have to make sure you didn’t do more damage than its fast healing could take as it can still die while the fast healing is active since fast healing isn’t regeneration. You might be able to craft a poison of sorts from its spores but as with any poison if you aren’t skilled in its use you might infect yourself on accident.”

“As for whether or not the mold is sentient, I can testify that it most certainly is and can understand Common, Sylvan and Aklo.”

“With regards to keeping it; I really wish you wouldn’t. I mean you seem like a nice lot and I’m assuming this interest in the mold as a food source has to do with the settlement that Delilah told me you folks are interested in having. How about I offer you a deal. Leave the mold with me and after you folks have figured out where you are staying I will come out there and plant something that will yield more food than a mindslaver mold and be better for you.”
Nelly says to Naithi, “Well I suppose the thing you’d have to worry about most with a dead mold is the spores, but after a while they would lose their potency and you could safely handle it. Again, I don’t quite understand this fascination you all seem to have with eating mindslaver mold but just because it isn’t my cup of tea doesn’t mean you couldn’t. I suppose a dead mold is a lot less risky than a live one.”

After answering Zazu and Naithi’s questions Nelly says to the party, “So how about that trade? A mindslaver mold which is sentient, mobile and trouble that wants to enslave things in exchange for a safe, non-sentient, stationary food plant of some kind later. Deal? I want to make sure everybody is on board with this.”

Lothlo agrees. He thinks the offer is generous and is happy to keep that mold far from town. Considering they freed themselves from the slavery of the orcs he can’t help but shudder at the thought of having one’s mind be enslaved by a plant.

Nelly stipulates further about the mold, “You know there are theories among herbalists that mindslaver mold might be distantly related to the heartseed. I’m not sure if that is true or not. Perhaps through study it can be figured out.”

After everyone has given their answer Nelly smiles and says, “Seems like our deal is forged.” She collects the sack and gives you a wooden token with green writing on it. “This symbolizes my promise to you that I will plant the plant as soon as you’ve figured where your settlement is going to be. If you give this token with a note detailing the coordinates of your settlement to an emissary and approximately when you want me to be there I will be there on the requested date or as close to it as I can manage.
