Sigvar pulls out a map ( the commander surely has one in he office) and looks to the south/southeast. He looks for anyplace they have been in that direction or any suitable lair for a green dragon, probably forest or swamps. There isn't a question if they will go after the commander, just where to look first.

Michael looks at the map in the Provost office. south. if he headed south that puts him having to cross the upper king's channel to get off the peninsula, so unless he turned right or left after he got out of sight he's in a limited section of land. we need to send out riders along that souther route to question farmers and folk who may have seen the dragon pass by. we also need to send riders out east and west of that line questions folk in case he turned. we ought to be able to narrow his lair down to a few square miles if we do that. we need to make up a code for the riders and give them a scroll of message so they can report back since it's 25 words the first word will be their unit designation, 2nd word how many hours they are from the citadel. 3rd-word loss of contact, direct visual, found a turn, 4th word unit integrity. 5th word supply situation. 6th word change in heading/same heading. Michael keeps going on writing the beginnings of the code book that can be used to transfer much more useful information than a simple 25 word message spell can normally send.

Many of the Soldiers in the Citadel know a lot more about search patterns and the endurance of men on horseback than Michael does. we get them in to help with the planning and supplying info on what questions each word of the message needs to address. 25 words can address at least 25 questions. more if we can breaks each world down so that each letter can represent something. we ought to be able to make a fairly comprehensive code book in a few hours.

Anna asks, "Do we still have that arrow of dragon slaying we dumped a lot of gold on last time? If so how many more do we need? I also think wands that allow us to handle acid could be a good idea and I mean I can trick pretty much any wand into working at this point so we don't necessarily have to worry who will use it."

"We will just have to make the time to do some shopping. If the dragon wanted to harm Commander Palance, he would have just dropped her from way up. If he wants some kind of restitution for something, he will hold her up for a while in his lair. So leg's get this stuff appraised, claimed or sold, and get ourselves re-equipped.

Those scouts are a good idea. The whole Citadel is in this together, not just us. The scouts should verify from eye witnesses what direction the dragon came from as well as the direction he went."

Nikolai uses the map to draw up a search plan in all directions from the Citadel and hands the plan to their Second-in-Command.

Michael Wittman AC:21, T:18, FF:21 (ucdodge) HP 64/75 Me+19(14)( 9)F+10, R+18,W+10, CMB+16, CMD+28

Michael speaks to Anna. You don't remember that Anna. you can't buy Arrows of dragon slaying singly, you got to buy them like you buy arrows 20 at a time. Nobody can afford that. and the Catacombs won't list you part the lot of them out among the other folk at the store either. Something fishy going on there. .

Michael remembers that the Mailed fist keeps fairly detailed maps fo the areas they operate in. in 1:250,000 and also in 1;10.000 resolution. he gets the maps out and starts assigning search areas based on their search plan.

OOC: did you all want me to go to the catacombs? I usually do but I kind of got into the role play.

DM Warren - Vanished into the Knight

From the orcs:
500 pp from leader’s chest
Crown with jewels
Gold-encrusted chest
+2 shields x8
+3 shield x2
+4 shield
From the underwater lair:
10,000 gold pieces
10 white emeralds
10 green emeralds
5 blue star sapphires
Celestial armor
Sword of life stealing

Sigvar and Michael begin looking at all maps that are available - Sigvar trying to narrow down destinations and Michael to create a search pattern. Together, he, Nikolai, and the Citadel scouts devise a plan for searching. Preliminary investigations of the land that direction shows generally forested and marshy conditions. In fact, the Agents traveled this general direction not too long ago when they visited Wedding City out near the Coast.

Pru, Trayvin, and Anna discuss magical defenses that can help them fighting a Green Dragon once they do find it. Nikolai also reasons that Commander Palance isn't in immediate danger, as she was abducted rather than killed. He and Pompous figure out more of their gear needs.

They are correct. The entire Citadel feels this impact, and many in command are relieved that they have their most experienced field crew here to walk them through the dangers they haven't experienced in normal campaigns. It's not as simple as they had hoped though. There are not enough people who can cast Sending or even use a scroll to include one on each team, so they still need to rely on more traditional messengers. They also have to figure out where to start, so as not to waste too much time in the lands near the Citadel.

Still, they organize quickly and get teams in the field. Now the Agents have to decide how best to deploy themselves.

Anna and Trayvin visit the office again to see if there are any clues as to where or why she was taken, but they find it much the same as the previous agents to visit. Ordered chaos, normal to what you would expect from Palance's office.

It's easy enough to find someone to show you where Palance was taken in the fields. Whoever is heading that way feel free to make a survival roll to determine more info.

Staff of Healing - I don't see anything to indicate that it's not fully charged (so 10 charges) Even if discharged, Trayvin and Sigvar could have easily recharged it (and your other one) in downtime. RAW - use one 4th level spell slot a day to add one charge to the staff.

treasure - I was gonna ask for an appraisal check, but now I'm thinking that's tedious
Crown with jewels, value: 12,000 gold
Gold-encrusted chest, value: 5,000 gold
10 white emeralds, value: 4,000 ea (value: 40,000)
10 green emeralds, value: 1,000 ea (value: 10,000)

Historical tapestry, value: 10,000 gold
Gold-woven tapestry x2, value: 5,000 ea (value: 10,000)

Anna finds it easy enough in the field to confirm the direction that the dragon flew off. There are indents in the field to show where a very heavy creature launched from powerful hindquarters. Confirmation with other fist personnel say that the dragon flew off in a single direction until out of sight.

It's easy enough to send a few birds with each group that needs it to carry a swift message back, but Michael doesn't have the authority to start handing out cash. He could bankroll that himself, or go through the proper channels. Q may be able to help with this.

With some of their shopping accomplished, a report comes back from one of their scouting groups that they found some spoor a hard day's ride away that would indicate that the dragon had not veered from the initial course.

OOC: Nikolai will know what to purchase once the final amount is tallied, since he won't need to pay for the recharging of his Staff of Healing.

IC: Nikolai wants to make sure that the proper command structure is not compromised in any way before they leave. Not that he has any authority in that matter, but his mind would be more focused on the chase if he's not worrying about the leadership left behind.

So, he visits each of the captains and lieutenants to make sure that they all are up to par with the Mailed Fist protocols regarding the absence of Senior Commanders. Since the Agents are a separate entity, not of the rank and file of the Mailed Fist, he confides with each one that if they feel there is any problems, they are to report this to him, a Neutral Party, and their confidentiality will be assured as the issues are resolved.

The Agents finish establishing lines of communication and protocols for the emergency. Michael makes sure that the scouts are called back to center around the freshest traces. For the commanders in the Citadel, should they need to consult with Nikolai, the head cleric can send a spell, in between scribing as many scrolls as possible. It seems now that there's ample reason for a stockpile in case of emergency.

All that remains is for the Agents themselves to decide how and when to proceed.

okay we can split 112,000 gp amongst us right now. for the gold, gems, crown and chest.
so everybody gets 18,667gp
next we do the items.
total loot value 558,198. so everyone gets 93,033 in un sold value of loot.
so Pur, Anna, Pompous and Trayvin get this much unsold value,, after sale it becomes 46,516gp 5sp. +the 18667 give a grand total of 65,183gp ( I rounded up on the gold so I rounded down on the loot. you lost about a sp in the deal.

now
Nikolai 90033 -40k for Ring of FOM = 50,033gp.= 25,016.5 +18667=43683.5gp
Sigvar 90033 - 16157 = 73,876gp =36938 +18667=55,605 gp.

As she thinks about it more, Q starts listing off more options for Sigvar, chatting quickly as she goes about her duties. It seems like brainstorming around this problem is taking her mind off the larger problem. Oh of course you can ride! It's all about finding the right mount. You remember Bliss? I don't think you want to make yourself smaller, but he loved riding his bird around. Making a horse bigger would be a similar solution. Or you could get something exotic - I've heard about a dwarf that rides an elephant into battle! I think it's some sort of construct, but something that size would suit you fine. How do you feel about a huge crab or insect mount? That could be fun to train!

All the Agents make their decision and get to the Catacombs, returning soon after with some bright and sparkly new gear, ready to be field tested.

Soon enough, they're headed southwest from the Citadel to rendezvous with the scouting party that discovered the dragon manure.

DM Warren - Vanished into the Knight

Thanks to Pru's teleportation magics, the dragon has not gained as much time as it could have. Still, between ensuring the Citadel was functional, organizing scouts, and getting to the dragonsign, it's fast approaching evening a little over 2 days since the Knight Commander's abduction.

While scouting out the scene, Pompous, Michael, and Nikolai fan out a bit, but there is no more immediate sign of which way to go other than generally southwest.

Anna tests out her dino powers, and finds that she can outpace the horses by a little bit without too much effort. (horses are generally 50ft speed, slowed a tiny bit hauling a wagon of minotaurs and supplies. There's also the option to try to stick to some roads, or go directly the way the dragon went, which will be rougher going.)

The Agents can push on into the night, rotating shifts of riding and driving. The horses can handle that right now, but that will get exhausting eventually.

Pompous acknowledges Michael with a simple nod.
As the junior member of the squad he automatically differs to the others since they are superior in rank.
Ranger Pompous however acknowledges that he needs to hide his disappointments better,

Since Tray Tray is asking, Pompous suggests that keeping to the road is better for the wagons and that likely it would be safer. He is fine however with doing some long range scouting on foot and flying (celestial armor) if we wanted to check the overland routs for trails that the wagons could use.

Once they do stop for the evening, Pompous helps to set up camp and then waits for his guard assignment.

Meanwhile he sets Michael, Pompous, and himself a more direct path not using the roads. They stay within visual contact as much as possible and meet up with the rest of the group where the roads and their direct path meet. (OOC: if possible, of course, don't know how much roads there are around here)

"Regardless of whether we rest the horses or not, I'm sure the dragon has already reached his destination, so resting the horses as we make camp each night won't make any difference. If the dragon has done this to use the Commander as bait for us, he'll wait and keep her relatively unharmed until we reach his lair."

However, Nikolai will push on if the party feels it necessary.

" All of this mount business is too much to take in right now. We need to get on the move as soon as possible. I can ride in the wagon or provide overwatch for now."
As he says that the the black fur and leather cloak he acquired at the catacombs transforms into a set of leathery/furry wings. He tests them out some and it is clear that the training time with Prudence's spells has paid off. While not graceful he is quite capable of flight.
" Daylight's burning, let's get rolling"
As time progresses on the trek he will Provide overwatch from above , especially as the wagon and scouts separate. He is not concerned about the dragon spotting him, if it chooses to attack him it will save him the work of chasing it down.

Trayvin is still feeling fresh and wants to push on for a bit. Pru points out that the horses should get plenty of rest while Pompous is doing his scouting. Michael bows to Pompous' expertise, which says that sticking to the roads would be a better idea for the wagons.

Anna keeps up her field testing of her abilities, and it seems like the horses are a little bit inspired by a quick pack leader, and do their best to keep up with her.

Nikolai reasons that the Knight Commander should be safe, since it's likely that she's bait for them. Pompous returns with news of fresh sign as Nikolai is studying maps of the region. It looks as if the dragon (or something similarly sized) landed on its course to pounce on some prey, but when it took off was bearing a few points towards the south.

The road continues for a little farther southwest, but curves generally more south as it gets closer to the coastline.

Nikolai ponders the logistics of tracking and using roads and with the new information plots new paths for the wagon. 'How is this dragon pouncing around with a captive in tow? Wouldn't our commander try to escape while the dragon occupies himself with other things?

Nikolai is further convinced that their commander is under some compulsion that prevents any thoughts of escaping. Which means, they are safe to camp and not push too hard.

Still, they are professionals, and don't let one peaceful night allow them to relax.

Maps show very little in the way of towns on this route. It doesn't seem to be a very well traveled area. The next day of tracking is a little more difficult, as some areas of the road show signs of nature trying to reclaim it's domain. The next night, they come upon an area that seems well disguised from the air due to tree cover, but has a surprising amount of clear space on the ground and proceed to set up camp for the night.

With his long reach, Sigvar just has to step up to start hacking away. He does register the tree creatures as evil, so his sword burns with holy fire to carve through its braches. He's almost as bad at attacking as the trees were at hitting Michael a moment ago, other than his first well placed strike. Michael gets himself in place behind the tree and prepares himself for some sneak attacking.

Trayvin calls upon his own holy power to bless his friends.

Nikolai points out that the trees are not just alive, but mobile, and attacks. He connects with both attacks, but cannot see that one was more effective than the other. Anna calls out though that they hate lightning, and shifts to take advantage of that fact. Pompous takes advantage as well, and skewers one with many arrows tipped with electric energy, completely blowing apart the one that Nikolai had started pummeling.

Pru however feels powerful and confident. They're just trees after all. She goes ahead with setting up for her night of glamping. Will save 22 to overcome complacency as they're still attacking your friends.

The trees for their part continue to close in around the Agents (slowly), eager for a taste of blood.

"Oh!" Pru feels silly. The trees are attacking. Why hadn't she seen that before?

And hadn't Anna said something about electricity? "I don't think I have any--oh, wait!"

She casts Chain Lightning. Her primary target is tree #4. Her secondary targets are trees #1 and #3, plus the two other trees on the east side of the map that appear to be unnumbered.

Each target takes 60 points of electricity damage. The primary target can make a DC 23 Reflex save for half; the secondary targets can make DC 21 Reflex saves for half. Let me know if I need to roll SR.

Sigvar puts down the tree between him and Michael in a flurry of swordplay.

Trayvin is taking the threat seriously, even if Pru is not, and puts himself in between her and the thorny vines.

Anna flies in to utilize her breath, even though one of her targets is down already. The tree she left flails uselessly against her scales. (aoo missed) Trees aren't known for being terribly agile, and her target takes full damage.

Michael escapes the grapple without too much difficulty, but it takes a little longer than he thinks, and he doesn't have the time to attack quite yet. (escaping a grapple is a standard action - you can move if you like, but no attack unless you're using a HP for an extra action)

Pru comes to her senses. Even if these aren't a threat to the Agents, they must be eating something. She unloads some arcing lightning on three trees (SR of 19 for each, you can also switch your secondary targets as some were taken down before your turn).

Nikolai provides some cover to Michael's escape, distracting it with a foot up it's tree rear end.

Pompous could make some sport out of hunting these trees and his volley of arrows tears it to shreds.

The trees for now keep looking for a meal, though this one is not proving to be easy. One gets an lucky blow on Sigvar (nat 20, no confirm, 12 damage)

Tree 4 might attack (unless Pru succeeded in blowing it to bits) - tree 6 approaches closer, and 7 tries to interrupt the rain of deadly arrows. It lands a critical blow on Pompous and wraps him up into its branches, drawing him in. (26 damage and grappled)

You're thinking that these things will go down easily, when you hear a different sort of sound. Two other huge treelike creatures approach, faster and quieter, and there's a gentle singing sound in the air.

Nikolai and Trayvin each make a will save vs DC21 (charm effect)

She can't fail a 19 check, unless this game is using the house rule that a natural 1 always fails (some DMs like that one). I rolled some checks, and did get a natural 1, so that one might have failed. The others succeeded.]

[Secondary targets have to be within 30 feet of the primary target, so picking new secondaries would mean picking a new primary, and let's just not.]

With her sorcerous oomph, Pru took down the tree engaged with Trayvin. Just in time too, since he's become preoccupied.

Sigvar continues his bloody (sappy?) work, occupying another tree and being too big to get wrapped up.

Pru gives her friends a boost of speed, which isn't quite enough to help Pompous get out of his predicament.

Anna knows that these new threats are Witch Trees, and the one in the north responds in soothing tones. You have killed several of my companions, creatures. But if you want to part peacefully now, we will take your archer and that delicious orc and call it even. There is some magic behind her words, trying to affect Anna since she didn't have any luck on Nikolai. DC21 will save - charm effect

Michael's target would be bleeding sap, if his flurry of strikes hadn't caused it all to come flying out at once.

True to her words, the other trees start retreating, one of the hangman trees drawing Pompous into its trunk and Trayvin following along with the second witch tree into the darkness.

Pru isn't about to let the trees take her friends away. The hangman trees take the full brunt of her spell, and her spell overcomes the Witch Tree's resistance as well, but it seems to resist it a bit.

Sigvar did indeed hear the tree, as she was speaking in common. However, his spell is not quite up to the task of dispelling the effect on Trayvin. knowledge arcana DC25 Highlight to display spoiler: {} Trayvin is under a dominate person spell (requires dispel check 21) The feminine tree's tendrils strike at Sigvar as he flies into range, but cannot get past his armor. (aoo miss)

Michael is off like a shot, charging at the tree for all he's worth. He easily gets in range and is ready to strike. (you had plenty of movement to be anywhere around the tree you like - started off about 75 feet away)

Trayvin goes off with the nice tree lady and hears some gentle whispering in his mind. do be a dear and bless me with your magics (spell still in place - please cast some sort of buff on W2)

While a little tougher than the other trees, they're a smidge easier to hit and Nikolai gives his target a good pummeling. (AC21)

(Did Anna made her DC21 will save?) Even making the saves, Anna's powerful dragon breath finishes off the trees that Pru had begun blasting. Pompous pops out, gasping for air and wiping away the acid that had been starting to dissolve him, very slowly, over the course of 1000 years.

For their part, the trees scream in frustration and begin flailing after the failed parley. W2 attacks Sigvar once after giving an order to Trayvin, but fails to connect.

The other tree goes full out on Nikolai, seeing that she's got him somewhat isolated at the moment. Her tendrils strike at him 4 times, connecting twice, and one of them wraps around him and begins to squeeze. 1 hit AC26 for 13, 1 hit AC26 for 16, 1 squeeze vs CMD 40 for 16 (total 45 damage)

No worries, Anna. Thanks! She didn't succeed on the elf, so switched the the next closest large threat. That was perfect, Tray - very clever.

Between disintegrations, technically helpful but ineffective buffs, and much hacking and slashing, both witch trees are down, and Trayvin comes out of the fog he was under.

Nikolai switches direction to chase the last tree under the fading light. He runs straight into a facefull of spores as it continues to try to make good its escape. It unfortunately cannot hope to outrun the agents and is quickly dispatched.

The sounds of combat fade away and the night quiets. The spores slowly drift down from the air until the haze is gone and you can all see and breathe a touch more easily. The door to Pru's mansion still hangs in the air, ready to be utilized by the Agents.

Michael, ever practical, ruminates on the uses of the wood. He thinks that even better than looking good, it could be used to make wooden shields and the like. (quite a bit of raw darkwood - heavy, but valuable) Additionally, several of the thorny vines seem like they would make quite good ropes.

Pru shepherds man, woman, plant creature, minotaur, and horses and wagon into the mansion, where she immediately directs Michael and Pompous towards the baths.

Nikolai hefts a piece of the tree, and notices that it already feels like it's magically balanced. It reminds him oddly of his staff of healing.

It does not take long to find the place these trees tended to rest, especially since the last one tried to flee in that direction. It's a good thing they did though, as they find several more of the trees that are not quite mature yet and are able to excise them before they become a threat to less well prepared travelers.

Looking through the trees husks the next morning also provides for some interesting finds. There is another long, straight shaft of wood that continues to radiate magic. In fact, the two lengths of wood seem to hold some residual magic.

Treat these two as one staff of charming and one staff of enchantment.

Three of the ropes from the trees seem like they could come alive at any moment. treat as 3x ropes of entanglement

In the hollow where the trees were stationed you find the remains of a small body, that was discarded after the trees got all the nutrients they could from it. On the body are the remains of its gear. The clothes are tattered and useless, as is a necklace of a thin chain of silver with a faded symbol of Ffloy. However, several items are still in prime condition, and you confirm that they are also magical to have survived unscathed.

A thick, red cloak has been bundled so tightly and for so long that the creases in it will never come out. It is dry, immaculately clean and has a kind of ‘wooden’ smell to it, thanks to its stay in the tree. The initials “J. R. T.” are stitched into the collar. (Treat as a +4 Cloak of Resistance that resizes to fit and magically cannot be stained.)
A sword in a scabbard sits among the bones, which makes whoever holds it feel incredible lucky. Obviously luck was not enough to save its former owner. (1x Luckblade)
A thick gold ring with a circular red ruby rests on one of the finger bones. Sigvar feels similar energy to a spell he cast yesterday sitting in it. (Ring of counterspells with a ‘Dispel Magic’ spell cast into it.)

This, in addition to the haul of darkwood, is a sizable (though heavy) haul.

Once they have loaded up what they intend to take with them, they are able to resume the trail of the dragon with little difficulty.

Michael takes some regular small trees and cuts them down with the camp ax, he lays them on each side of another tree he can roll the dark wood logs upon the cut trees and keep them off the ground so that they don't rot. it will only take a few minutes and will keep the wood dry till they can come back for it later.

Michael looks at the sword and the cloak. I'll take either one of these or both if no one wants them. I figure someone will want the Cloak, so I'll take the sword if nobody else wants it. I'll replace my rapier with it since nobody else uses a short sword and it seems to have a bit more magical power than the rapier.

The Agents leave their camp area, after Michael leaves a sign for themselves so they don't have to deal with the pile of darkwood right now. They continue along with their previously decided course, keeping the wagon mostly to the road with scouts going out to see if there is any new sign or other reason to change their course.

So far, there is none. They can almost pretend that it's just a nice day for a drive out to the coast. But there are always those thoughts in the background of Commander Palance, the dragon, and what dastardly plans are in the works.

The end of the day finds them coming mostly out of the forest into a wide open field area where you can see a beautiful view of the sunset. The road continues it's gradual turn to the southwest.

The night of camping allows the Agents to assess their recent discoveries a bit more, and while Pru doesn't know the exact metrics of the luckblade, she can tell there isn't enough power in its magical aura for there to be any wishes left. If there had been, it's former owner probably wouldn't have been eaten by trees.

The Agents pass the night as pleasantly as they can, and see no sign of any predators or prey in the area, and nothing disturbs them in the night. The next day is more of the same. Pompous finds no convenient evidence of dragon passage nearby the camp, but efforts during the day's travel do discover more sign more of less following the road as it curves southward.

As the day draws long, you begin to smell salt on the wind, evidence that you are drawing closer to the sea.

The Agents, fairly confident that they're dealing with Slartanus again, start thinking back on their previous encounters with him. If they do need a ship, then Wedding City ( a couple more days down the coast road) would be the best bet for hiring one.

"Ok Anna, if you want to stand guard outside, that's great. If trouble rears it's ugly head, just pop in and warn us," Nikolai says with a smile.

No point in getting lax with the sentry duty just because of the security of the Mansion, so Nikolai offers to keep First Watch and others volunteer to take the next ones. Need only one per watch, he concludes, with Anna outside also.

"By Land or by Sea, we'll play it by ear. If by sea, looks like on the map Wedding City would be our best bet. Problem is, if by sea, then where? all the way across? Along the coast? North? South? Let's keep asking everyone we meet, farmer, traveler, etc. if they saw anything like a flying dragon."

Nikolai quickly lays out a plan for gathering information as soon as they encounter someone on the road, or once they get to the city. Someone is bound to have noticed a dragon hanging around, right?

The Agents also establish a watch order for the night, with Anna lurking outside in rotating stealthy animal forms and a backup set of eyes.

The last night of journey before reaching Wedding City has them on the road near the beach, where it winds along the water with cool ocean breezes, bird calls, and salt smells. The last to the east begins to rise up again to form some cliffs, while the road stays down below until it reaches the city.

The Agents settle down to camp and expect to be in town late in the day tomorrow.

per the reading of Mage's Mansion, it's an extradimensional space, not on any plane - thus, you would not be on the same plane for the use of a telepathic bond spell.

During the middle of third watch, Michael and Anna hear the noise of the ocean begin to change. It sounds like singing originating from the edge of the water. It's especially enticing to Michael though, and he feels the urge to start walking out towards the water.

Michael, before ending watch and making breakfast, please make a DC20 Will Save

DM RobC - "it's just so beautiful...." (Map)  d6=2 ; d6=2 ;
Wednesday July 15th, 2020 4:44:22 AM

While the others sleep soundly, Michael and Anna are having quite the adventure.

It was such lovely music. Michael couldn't help but walk towards the ocean. It just sounded so beautiful. Fortunately the seagull swooping him is enough to bring him to his senses.

In the shallow waters ahead of him he can see two things that certainly aren't beautiful. It's difficult to even describe. They look like some sort of large green crabs with sharp teeth, covered in moss, and each with three heads sticking out of it. Lurking in the shallows they would have been very difficult to see. When they're on the surface though you can't miss them.

Anna is clever enough to recognize them as Seaweed Sirens. Or at least, she's pretty sure they are.

What Michael thought sounded lovely now sounds just plain awful! All six heads are singing and talking, but the words are gibberish and don't even make sense. You're not even sure what languages they're speaking.

What you are sure of though is that all eyes - and there are a lot of them - are on Michael (Gaze attack. Michael to make 2 x Will Saves vs DC22. Fail 1 = Staggered for 2 rounds. Fail both = Staggered for 4 rounds)

-----------------
OOC: Phew! Looks like we're all on the same page. Went back to using a square grid for the map. It was a bit tricky showing 'large' creatures on the hex grid, and this way also gives you coordinates.

The portal to the mansion is open though neither side can hear/see what is happening on the other and no monsters may enter.

(OOC 1: If Michael is staggered does Anna have to roll a grapple check to pick him up and move with him or because they are allies; Anna could just pick him up?)
(OOC 2: Where is the Manse Door?)

Anna uses Beast Shape III to turn into a huge allosaurus and then either heroically picks her ally up or tries to if she has to grapple him first. (37 vs CMD; +4 from grab; +2 huge; +3 size bonus increase) either way the huge 10,000 pound 30 foot long dinosaur succeeds in picking up the small halfling. She then motors 50 feet away from the sirens with her back to them (OOC: looks like if you turn your back to a creature with a gaze attack you don't have to worry about it but they gain concealment against you) and towards the door of the manse. If the brown thing on the map is the Manse portal she goes through it and says to her friends "Hey you guys; Michael and I got attacked by some Seaweed Sirens and would like some backup"

Action Summary:

1 heroic standard action: pick up or grapple Michael

If we make the water too hot for them, won't they come on shore? That is if there is a way to make the water around them boiling hot. Just an idea. Or place a wall of force or stone in the water behind them to keep them in the shallows, that would help us a bit too.

We can try to pretend to be enchanted but not go into the water and just stand on the shore, that might bring them out. All standing as a group around Sigvar and Trayvin, swaying back and forth, singing along with them... that might give them the confidence that we are fodder just for the taking.

Sigvar moves into the fray, hastily flying towards the nearest siren and hacking into it.

Michael is right behind him. He can't quite get into a flanking position right now, but he gets close. He prepares to defend himself against an attack.

Pru, Pompous and Trayvin all stand back by the mansion casting spells.

Nikolai draws his bow and gets ready to start raining them down on the sirens.

Anna stomps in an chomps at the siren to the west. She doesn't manage to grapple it, but does manage to rip a chuck of seaweed away. It tastes terrible.

The enemy act!

The siren next to Anna babbles away, making an absolute racket. In the words though Anna can hear something (Use SLAs defensively. Hit TouchAC35. Anna to make a Will Save vs DC18 or be cursed! Curse: Each turn she has a 50% chance to act normally, otherwise she can take no action. Anna to also make a Will Save vs DC18 or be confused!)

The other siren does the same to Michael. (Use SLAs defensively. Hit TouchAC27. Michael to make a Will Save vs DC18 or be cursed! Curse: Each turn he has a 50% chance to act normally, otherwise he can take no action. Michael to also make a Will Save vs DC18 or be confused!)

Each siren then back away and partially submerge themselves, so that only their top halves can be seen. (5ft step)

Things start to look a little worse when a third siren surfaces. It attack Anna and hurts her ears a little (Hit AC33. Anna takes 16pts sonic damage)

Sigvar steps in to deliver a number of good hits on the siren. Highlight to display spoiler: {With no post from Michael I can't allow flanking. For him to flank would mean dropping down to sea level, moving into melee range and becoming the target this round. Needs to be his call}

Pompous sends a nicely worded barb the way of the sirens, and follows up with a whole heap of nicely aimed arrows too! It's tough though and stays breathing. Do all it's heads breathe? Probably.

Nikolai tries shooting as well, but the noise is so bad that he has trouble focusing on his target. His arrow goes wide and sizzles harmlessly into the water.

Trayvin backs up as far as he can and considers casting a spell. Highlight to display spoiler: {SMVII has a 1 round casting time. You can't take a move action and start casting in the same round, unless you have a special ability}

Anna saves against the spells and takes on a different form: one that can regenerate damage. She'll be good as new in no time!

Pru whips out a classic spell: fireball! Maybe it's the water or maybe they saw her casting it, but the sirens dodge most of the flames (Ref Saves: 20, 21)

The enemy act...

Siren 1 tries to confuse that annoying person that's causing all the silence. It gazes at Nikolai as it carefully descends into the water, fully submerging itself (Nikolai to make a Will Save vs DC18 or be confused! Nikolai to make a Will Save vs DC22 or be staggered for 4 rounds!).

Siren 2 has seen better days. It's barely clinging to life right now. It is intelligent though. That big minotaur looks really well protected. There has to be something more squishy around here somewhere. Hey, that caster just made fire! The siren focuses in on Pru sendin three sonic beams at the sorceror! (Hit AC27,28,36. Pru takes 23 + 15 + 20 pts sonic damage! Pru to make a Will Save vs DC18 or be confused!). Like the first one, the siren then submerges into the water.

Siren 3 moves closer to Sigvar and tries to curse and confuse him! (Hit TouchAC22. Sigvar to make a Will Save vs DC18 or be cursed! Curse: Each turn he has a 50% chance to act normally, otherwise he can take no action. Sigvar to also make a Will Save vs DC18 or be confused!). It starts a Cacophony to keep things loud.

Unfortunately for Sigvar, the newly emerged Sired 4 attempts the same. (Hit TouchAC27. Sigvar to make a Will Save vs DC18 or be cursed! Curse: Each turn he has a 50% chance to act normally, otherwise he can take no action. Sigvar to also make a Will Save vs DC18 or be confused!). It starts a Cacophony to try and sing in key with Siren 3. The key? Awful.

Sigvar dives into the water in pursuit of the siren. With his tremendous reach he is able to stab at it safely from range. Would the term "sea cow" be offensive to a minotaur? We'll leave that for another day.

Pompous just goes to town on siren #3. 5 arrows with absolute precision, shot in the space of just 6 seconds. Incredible! Despite the onslaught, the siren is still alive.

Pru feels a little worse for wear and that unnatural noise keeps her from casting any more spells.

Trayvin concentrates on a summoning spell. At his distance he feels pretty safe that he can't be reached.

Michael goes to lay into the creature but finds a slight problem. It's fully submerged. He can't reach it without diving into the water himself.

Nikolai pursues the siren, not content to let it hide in the water.

Anna dips her toes/tendrils in the water and bites at the siren near her.

The enemy act!

Things aren't going well for the squishy sirens. On land they open themselves up to too many hostiles. Spread out they're easy pickin's. Now they have meat in the water though. Time to eat!

Siren 1 limply moves away from Anna to get within 10ft of Nikolai, gazing deep into his soul. The water isn't clear, so vision is hampered but at 10ft away it's close enough to see. (OOC: Since the water is murky and dark, let's go with the range of the gaze attack halved to just 15ft. Nikolai to make a Will Save vs DC22 or be staggered for 4 rounds!)

Siren 2 knows it's in trouble, but isn't going down without a fight. It paddles to Sigvar and bites him as hard as it can (5ft step. Hit AC42. Sigvar takes 28pts damage!)

Siren 3 decides to swim up to Nikolai and hopefully do something about the coin. It sure does it's best, biting him heavily around the face and ears! (Hit AC45. Nat20. Crit confirmed on AC33. Nikolai takes 22 + 34pts damage! Nikolai to make a DC35 Fort Save! Pass = deafened for 1 round. Fail = Permanently deaf!)
Highlight to display spoiler: {I couldn't find anything that had Deafening Critical as a sound/noise/sonic attack, so I don't think a silence spell protects against it}

Siren 4 sees how successful the other sirens are with their bites, so swims up to Sigvar to try for itself (Provokes an AoO from Sigvar. Hit AC37. Sigvar takes 29pts damage!)

Siren 5 arrives on scene and goes straight for Nikolai. (Hit AC36. Nikolai takes 25pts damage!)

All of the sirens are now fully submerged and can't be seen on the surface. The good news for those up top though is that there is no longer a cacophony effect on the surface.

"All right, let's try that again without the noise," Pru says.

She casts Reverse Gravity.

She can target the area where all five sirens are, which will also include Sigvar and Nikolai (sorry, guys!). She can leave Michael out of the area.

Hopefully, the sirens, the water, and maybe some really confused fish will begin floating upward and the sirens will have less cover. Anyway that's Pru's thinking.

As I read the combat section of the Pathfinder doc, it says that an unarmed attack promotes an AOO. Since Michael was flanking it with Sigvar he gets an AOO as well, and since it exposed itself to bite Sigvar, he get an attack for that as well.

Blood swirls in the water around Nikolai as three of the abominable three headed seaweed creatures converge on Nikolai. He is able to shrug off a gaze attack but the bites are horrendous.

However, he still hangs on.
Barely.

Oddly enough, just as he is about to make a strategic retreat, he starts floating upwards and out of the water! ['unattached objects and creatures...']

He was going to swim away, but now he'd have to fly away, but he can't fly. So, Nikolai takes advantage of the weird situation and using both feet kicks out at Siren5, not for damage, but to push himself away.

Kick at Siren5 to push himself way vs DC? = 30
At the same time he uses a Ki point for extra protection (+4 dodge)

OOC: I'd get at least a 5' step out of this but hopping for a lot more. DM can judge how much distance a push will get with a Strength of 17, strength bonus +3. Just kicking to push away could be a touch attack.

Michael stays up top, ready to attack anything that surfaces. Highlight to display spoiler: {It's been mentioned a few times now - including by Sigvar - that the siren is underwater. Michael needs to move underwater to be able to attack it. Also, a natural attack is different to an unarmed attack and doesn't provoke an AoO}

Trayvin finishes summoning and brings a greater water elemental into play. He conjures it to appear behind the siren attacking Sigvar so that they can flank it. It attacks but misses with both slams.

Sigvar can see the blood flowing from his arms but a quick touch heals some of that up. Sigvar realises that as these creatures aren't evil that his sword isn't dealing the holy damage he so wishes it would. He finishes off the dying siren before putting the hurt on another one.

Pru then does something kinda interesting. She casts a reverse gravity spell covering the combat area. It does raise a few interesting questions. Line of sight, line of effect, how can she tell which squares the underwater enemies are in? But let's just go with the 'rule-of-cool'. Everything in that area rises 10ft upwards such there there is a 10ft high, 20ft wide and 80ft long, rectangular block of water atop the ocean. Like a swimming pool with invisible sides, if you will. The sirens, Sigvar and Nikolai are still considered underwater even if they are 10ft above where the ocean should be. Hero point for Pru for a very clever way to get back in the battle!.

Nikolai has taken a real beating. The reverse gravity spell has propelled him upwards, but he is still alongside two very angry (albeit confused) seaweed sirens. He decides that now is the time for a strategic retreat. He pushes himself away from one of the sirens as hard as he can. Both snap their jaws at him as he sails past, but neither connects with the monk (AoOs Hit AC29 and 32. Both miss!). Nikolai ends up treading water, quite near the shore.

Anna is able to reach the nearest siren, even if it is a little higher now. It's not a lot of damage, but every bit adds up.

The reverse gravity has also popped the sirens up nicely for Pompous to take a few shots at. They're still surrounded by water which makes them very tricky to see, and the reverse gravity isn't helping either, but he manages to get two good shots on the one near Anna (Highlight to display spoiler: {We'll say that any on the south of the gravity area only have Improved Cover rather than Total Cover})

The enemy act!

Siren 1 swims downwards through reversed water to get alongside Anna. It bites at her and does a little damage. Nothing that won't regenerate. (Provokes an AoO from Anna. Hit AC34. Anna takes 32pts damage!

Siren 3 swims over to attack Sigvar. It bites at him but all it gets is a mouthful of water (Provokes an AoO from Sigvar. Hit AC32=Miss!)

Siren 4 isn't about to give up. It too bites at Sigvar and also misses (Hit AC34=Miss!)

Siren 5 swims as fast as it can to get over near Anna, but is too puffed to be able to attack yet (Provokes an AoO from Anna)

A great round for the heroes!

Clearly this is getting out of hand. Sigvar is now underwater, above the level of the ocean and last time he saw Nikolai The man was being devoured. This is bad. He is fairly sure he can weather their attacks but Nikolai needs healing, or a diversion. He can't reach the thumb to heal him, but he hopes ha can draw enough ire from the 2 critters up here to let Nikolai get away. On the bright side, A friend just showed up and Sigvar can use that to his advantage.
First he takes a "5'step" to gain flanking on both critters ( the elemental has 15 foot reach so it can threaten both of them, and after the step he is in line with the elemental to flank). Next he spends a fraction of a second (swift action, Sigvar gains the advantages of the feat, the elemental does not) to train the elemental in Fist tactics, teaching it he Outflank maneuver for just this round, it should be enough. He then Heroically, and defensively casts Divine Favor, granting his attacks more accuracy and power. He then attacks first Critter 3 until it is dead and then Critter 4.

Pru goes with the ol' faithful magic missiles. They strike Siren 4 quite solidly.

The water elemental is now in a good position, and flanking with Sigvar makes a big difference. It hits the siren from behind and lands both slams.

Sigvar then goes nuts. In the blink of an eye he has moved, cast a spell, trained the elemental a little, and ultimately stabbed one of the sirens so many times it would be impossible to put it back together again. The other siren fares a little better and isn't sent to the afterlife.

Until Pompous steps in, of course. Even shooting into a block of water the ranger is just too good of a shot. Two arrows pierce the siren and come out the other side, leaving a siren corpse floating by Sigvar's face.

Michael flies around to where the injured thumb gasps for air. He interposes himself and is ready to take any blow that would be intended for Nikolai.

Nikolai for his part is just happy to breath again. He heals himself and swims to the safety of the shore.

Anna takes advantage of the movement of the sirens and finally gets one grappled! She bites savagely at it and gives it a small tentacle slap (You are correct. Half-damage for bludgeoning)

What a great round for the party!

Pru is right back where she started. She can't see any targets, and an area attack would hurt her friends. She briefly considers another Reverse Gravity, but concludes it would do more harm than good.

She very much wants to hurry to Nikolai's side, but that's a terrible idea because Nikolai is the center of the Silence, and she couldn't do anything once she got there.

Instead, she hurries over to Pompous (an easy single move for a Hasted person). "Hey, Pompous, do you want to be able to fly?" she asks. If Pompous agrees, she casts Fly on him. If not, she looks around for some other way to be useful.

Sigvar flies over to join the battle while Nikolai gets closer to tend to Anna.

Pru considers reversing some more gravity but everyone is pretty close to each other by now. Could do more harm than good. She offers to aid Pompous with a spell but he declines. Instead, he waits to see if any either of the sirens surface so he can get a shot.

Sigvar, the water elemental and Michael take care of one of the sirens. Pompous and Pru stay on alert, while Anna gets herself to a safe distance where she can get some much needed healing from Nikolai.

Only siren 5 remains and it isn't crazy enough to try and take on the whole party by itself. It tries to flee the scene, withdrawing as far as it can (Withdraw action still provokes AoOs from Sigvar and the Water Elemental. No flanking bonuses)

Sigvar gives the siren a parting shot as the water elemental takes after it in pursuit.

The siren and elemental will continue to flee from the shoreline and disappear far into the water. In all likelihood the elemental will clobber it to death before the summoning spell ends. Even if it doesn't, it will be the last anyone sees of that siren around here again.

The party gather around to take stock of the situation. There are some cuts, grazes and open wounds. Michael's intentional act to camouflage his face with sand is impressive.

Chopped up siren pieces float on the surface of the water.

The beach is quiet once more. No loud noises. Just the gentle sound of small waves lapping at the shore.

While Anna appreciates Trayvin's healing, she is not going to request anymore as her Tendriculous regeneration will heal her while it lasts. She allows the spell like ability to heal her and run its course before resuming her normal form.

She paces the mansion while Michael makes breakfast and tells him, "You know I can chose to eat or sleep but I normally don't since becoming a plant kin. What is the point of having these abilities if you aren't going to use them?"

Breakfast - to use Prus's words - is sublime. More than enough to fill any belly.

Trayvin patches up a few of Pru's wounds while Anna allows the regeneration of her form patch her up.

The party take stock and believe themselves to still be well equipped enough to handle any dangers the rest of the day may throw their way.

Pompous suggests having a look around to see if the sirens may have left anything useful behind.

The group emerge from the safety of the mansion to enjoy the daylight once again. The corpses of the sirens have now washed ashore and will no doubt prove good pickings for some sea birds.

Pompous doesn't see anything on the shoreline, so Nikolai goes for a swim. It makes sense. Seaweed sirens spend almost all of their time underwater.

A short way out to sea Nikolai does make a find. The sirens had built themselves a nest of some kind. A nest made out of pearls. Anna recalls that seaweed sirens target clam diggers strolling the beaches, lone fisherfolk, and even passing ships. These sirens have been quite prosperous.

OOC: Your DM assumes detect magic is cast, spellcraft checks and appraise checks successfully made....

- Trident of fish command (the sirens probably never figured out how to use it)
- 30k worth of pearls (a mixture of white, black, and natural colors)
- Five blue pearls worth 5k each (each can also be used as a material component for a Raise Dead spell)
- A pearl of the sirines
- Two rose colored pearls (each function as 3rd level Pearls of Power)
- Two orange pearls (each function as Orange ioun stones)
- Two green pearls (each function as Pale Green ioun stones)
- An iridescent pearl (functions as an Iridescent ioun stone)
- A bronze pearl (functions as a +3 equivalent Eberyon tear: Speed)
- A silver pearl (functions as a +4 equivalent Eberyon Tear: Holy, Ghost Touch, Undead Bane)
- A gold pearl (functions as a +5 equivalent Eberyon Tear: Holy, Shocking Burst, Dragon Bane)

It takes many laps of going back and forth to retrieve them all, but Nikolai is finally able to place them all in a pile on the sand.

Chances are the sirens had been hunting these 'grounds' for years to accumulate such a haul.
