Fade to Gray (DM John)

Having settled upon their mode of travel, the Keepers join hands while Velarin casts plane shift using the specially crafted tuning fork.

As the fork vibrates, everyone begins to feel its reverberation to their very core. Some inexplicable metaphysical phenomenon seems to draw out your perception of time. At some level of understanding, you realize perhaps not even a heartbeat has passed, but with so much sensory input being received, your consciousness seems to be compensating by slowing down your perception of the changes occurring in the reality around you.

The colors in the Wold seem to change or rather, to fade, to colorless shades of gray, the change appears as a gradual transition in your presently dilated senses. Blues, greens, yellows, oranges, purples, and everything in between, except, that is, for a singular shade of red, appear to lose any remaining vestige of hue. The sole remaining color is shocking in its uniqueness, appearing as stark crimson gashes across an otherwise monochromatic landscape. The terrain’s transformation is initially obscured by the impact of the loss of colors, but as your awareness broadens, it appears to consist mainly of indistinct scattered shapes that stretch into a gradual gradient of gray rather than into any discernible horizon.

As the Keepers adjust to their new surroundings, the sound of the fork fades away and previously unnoticed details become more obvious. The most noteworthy is a gate standing unattached to any wall, appearing much like the Arc de Triomphe does in another reality. Its immense size renders it visible despite being over 1000 feet distant from where you now stand, still holding hands. Of more immediate concern, however, are the streaks of scarlet. Having adjusted to your new location, you now recognize them to be streams of Woldsblood crisscrossing the landscape, merging and separating, streaming, more or less, in a direction that would put their destination past the gate. The nearest streamlets are scarcely more than 50 feet away--IN VIRTUALLY ANY DIRECTION!

To get to the gate, you will have to cross many of these streams...

Perception DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: { Additionally, you see, approximately 200 feet from you, in the same direction as the gate, at a location where several Woldsblood rivulets converge. You see woman, stationary but standing, likely human, and, even at this distance, apparently very opulently dressed. It does not require too much deduction to determine that she likely ventured too close to the streams and was overcome by the proximity to the Woldsblood. }

"Extradimensional items?" Murphy responds to Velarin's query. "Alleah Lighttouch. Highhill? She had many last names. She had a bag of holding in the place you speak of, and it worked just fine - no problems. Also, some of us had Bill's Pants o' Plenty, or the Splendid variety - and those worked just as advertised. So, that's all I can think of. Oh, and a couple of handy haversacks, right."

As the tuning forks were turned over, Murphy says, "Look, I'm not a cleric or anything. But my prayers go with you. I'll pray to the heavens to watch your backs, even though the local authorities may not like the heavens butting in on their turf. I'll get my fiancée praying too. Who knows what might happen when a witch starts praying?"

"Thanks Murphy, we can use all the help we can get on this one. Do us a favor though, and keep it quiet."

Upon arriving, and regaining his senses, V immediately points out the threat of the Woldsblood, and then thanks to his new robe, points out the dazed woman standing by it."

"Alright boys and girls, we need a game plan. Going any closer to the Woldsblood puts us at risk of ending up like the woman over there. I have 2 mass invisibilties memorized and plenty of fly potions. If everyone else has fly potions, we can go up and over, and fly invisibly for a bit, or we can rescue the damsel in distress and hope we don't succumb. If we rescue, I think it should be one person who is not too big to be retrieved in case he gets dazed. Thoughts?"

Tishe’ vibrates with the tuning fork and soon sees the red-gashed landscape. Velarin first names the red rivulets. “Woldsblood, and in every direction too”, she says while looking up. Can the heroes even go up to escape getting too near? If not, “we may have to think of a different plan. Tishe’ tried to determine if the daze effect is based on Will, Reflex, or Fortitude. “That can give us an indicator on which of us is the most vulnerable. “

Emrys suddenly feels the rush of Woldsblood all around him. He can feel a surge of power that is quite intoxicating. (As what SteveK had posted) Emrys reveals what he knows of Woldblood to the group. Some may have even felt the same sensations whenever he's cast Forbidden Rain.

Velarin, Emrys and Tishe’ quickly identify the dangers of the nearby Woldblood and share with the others. And Velarin proposes some options.

What you know about the hazards of Woldblood in game terms: Save DC is Will based and increases with character level. The greater the “strength” of a soul, the stronger the pull of Woldsblood. Actually touching even a drop of the blood, risks damaging both body and soul [wisdom and constitution damage].


You quickly observe that there is no way to approach the damsel in distress without being within range of the woldsblood effect. She is located between two not quite parallel streams converging some distance beyond her. At the point where she is trapped, there is a stream on either side of her, each about 30 feet away.

Lanliss amused by his surroundings, asks the obvious question about the incapacitated woman.

Edson answers, offering himself on the end of a rope as the solution.

Emrys quite familiar with Woldblood takes careful look at his surroundings and sees no hazard beyond that of the crimson liquid flowing around them.

Barratore provides no dissent, but reminds the others of the subtlety of their mission.


As the Keepers discuss their options, other differences to the Wold they are used to become apparent. Not immediately obvious, but pervasive once noticed, is the complete lack of all sounds other than those created by themselves. The rustle of grass in the wind is absent for there is no motion of air to produce it. No strumming insect or calling birds are present to provide any background noise and the flow of woldsblood, though surrounding them, is sufficiently slow that it, too, produces no audible sound. The air is still and clammy and, though it is not cold, it is sufficiently chill and damp to cause goosebumps or even the occasional shiver.

The woman remains motionless, awaiting, perhaps, for someone to come to her rescue.

"I've got 50' of silk rope. Let's give Edson a go at it. If he freezes, we pull him back. Everyone should be ready for anything just in case this is a trap. Once we free her, she may have information, but we cannot stay in place long. We need to be on the move ASAP.

Lanliss starts to help knot Edson's rope.

"Figure Eight ", he simply says.
Making a figure of the number eight and making a knot that is known to save many lives of climbing....entrepreneurs.....
After checking that knot 2 times, Lanliss proceeds to make a a fisherman knot as a way to make Edson's less...way less susceptible to accidents....
"You are safe now", Lanliss says.
" Barratore won't be able to leave you ropeless be accident now", Lanliss jokes.
"GO !", Lanliss says and smiles at Edson as he encourages Edson's.

Edson being the hook and bait on this fishing rod may not be an advisable action in this place. Emrys could simply dominate the mind of the woman and force her to walk back to them. If she had no mind to control, being undead, then he could simply use his ring to control her (ring of undead control). However Edson and the others seem so enthusiastic for this rope method ... he doesn't wish to burst their bubble.

"The effects of Woldsblood are technically non-magical ... and many of the wards I can cast upon on you would be little to no help. I will think on other possible aids. Please be careful."

Edson straps it on and is ready to be lowered.

Emrys considers compelling the woman to approach, but, upon further consideration, realizes that the dazing effect of woldsblood would not be overcome by such an approach. Instead, he urges caution.

Barratore cannot help but to keep looking about. Sudden deep silence had always been a prelude to an attack, or at the very least, something bad happening. The fighter keeps turning to look over a shoulder, this and that. He's got the rope looped about his waist and held in both hands in front of him. If he lets go, the rope simply slides away.

Barratore is distracted and barely registers the banter from Lanliss and Edson. He hears his name and snaps his head back around to what is going on in front of him.

"No Problem Edson, I got you"

"I only have a single Fly Potion, would prefer to save that if I can.

My understanding was there was a direct path to the woman that did not cross Woldsblood, Edson could walk to and then be pulled back if necessary.

The dazed woman stands between two converging streams at approximately 200 feet from you, in the same direction as the gate, at a location where several Woldsblood rivulets converge.

You quickly observe that there is no way to approach the damsel in distress without being within range of the woldsblood effect nor is there an obvious way to get to her from your current position without crossing a stream. She is located between two not quite parallel streams converging some distance beyond her. At the point where she is trapped, there is a stream on either side of her, each about 30 feet away.

"Ahh, I've got it! I could try to cast Reverse Gravity in the woman's space. IF gravity works here like in the Living Wold, then she would float upward and out of range of the Woldsblood's effects (up to 10 cubic feet per caster level). Edson could then simply fly over and retriever her."

Edson silently nods his thanks to Tishe. He goes to lick his lips, as they're dry and realizes he has not enoigh spit. Is this fear? He asks himself.

" I could sworn that I..I...heard a laughter", Lanliss says and he starts to feel his heartbeat rising.

Lanliss closes his eyes, he takes a deep breath and just listens.

Velarin reacts to the eerie silence and proposes some options for flight.

Tishe’ casts fly on Edson, ending the need for further discussion. Then comments on the sound of singing.

Barratore is ready for retrieval duty.

Emrys proposes casting reverse gravity. Given his comprehensive knowledge of the planes, he is confident the spell should work his. OOC: with a +20 to check, no need to call for a roll.

Emrys, take a hero point for finding a creative solution to the rescue.

Lanliss shares that rather than singing, he heard laughter. He speculates that something unseen may be present and listens more attentively, but hears nothing more.



Edson, flying, is able to find a safe overhead route to be above the dazed women where Emrys’ spell delivers her to his waiting arms. Once sufficiently distant from the deleterious effects of the woldsblood, she stirs as he flies back to the rest of where the Keepers are waiting.

“What? Who are you?”, she exclaims as she unsuccessfully, and fortunately so, attempts to free herself from his grasp.

As they land, she eyes each one warily. Only after her feet are on the ground, before Edson has any chance to voluntarily do so, she demands imperiously, “Unhand me right now!” She even stamps her foot for emphasis.

This woman appears to be of middle age with listless light brown hair and matching eyes that show signs of her having squinted too much. Her skin is fair, but whether that is due to having spent little time outdoors or a long time in the shadow realm, you cannot determine. She wears a traveling dress of fine wool cleverly tailored to deemphasize a tendency towards plumpness. The dress is elaborately embroidered with silver thread tracing out a subtle geometric pattern of triangles and circles. Six of her fingers are decorated with a ring, each unique and obviously of great value. In each ear is a sizable emerald and a finely wrought gold chain around her neck supports a medallion bearing a matching stone, prominently displayed between her similarly prominent cleavage.

“Well,” she continues with another stamp of her foot and an imperious stare, “I am waiting. Identify yourselves.” She makes a point of straightening and brushing her clothing anywhere that Edson contacted her.

Tishe’ looks at the woman and murmurs “much of a muchness”. Other than brown hair instead of fair and the specifics of jewelry and design, the Sorceress and rescued woman look quite similar.

“As we were the ones rescuing you from a dangerous situation... but no matter, someone has to go first. I am Tishe’ called Fateweaver. We are just travelers through the lands and found you locked in a mesmerizing stance too close to the Woldsblood streams.”

She waits for a fellow Keeper to ask the next obvious questions in return.

V follows up. "I am Velarin, a wizard of Cinnamon Valley. Who are you, and how did you come to be in this place?"

Telepathically, V advises the others. "Let's keep an eye out in case this is some sort of distraction meant to occupy our attention. Fortunately my new robe allows him to see almost all things, and in all directions at the same time." (perception 51)

Tishe’ sees some similarities and differences between herself and their new acquaintance. Ignoring the woman’s seeming lack of, um, courtesy, Tishe initiates the introductions.
Emrys and Lanliss also introduce themselves, with Emrys identifying the name of the group.


“Keepers of the Vale? Hmmphh. Sounds like a football team. You did prove helpful at least.”


While keeping his magically enhanced senses attuned to any potential threats, Velarin introduces himself and asks “Who are you, and how did you come to be in this place?"



She straightens before responding, lifting her chin even higher than it already was, “I am Lady Helena Madrigal Senior Court Wizard at Plateau City. Nevermind why I am here,” she adds dismissively.

“Of more immediate concern, however, is how do you intend to rescue my husband?” This last question is accompanied by a glance in the direction of the gate.

His first is that she has been here for quite some time. Her mannerism, her apparent complete lack of knowledge of The Keepers that surely the senior court wizard of Plateau City would know.

Barratore looks back to the gate and then to her. "We have only just arrived Lady Madrigal and you were our foremost concern. Once we have secured you safely returned we shall be able to move forward."

Emrys is perplexed by her statements. He is about to question her about her lack of knowledge on who they are when his thoughts are interrupted by Barratore.

Barratore speculates that Lady Madrigal has been there a while. He recalls that Senior Court Wizard is a relatively minor title comparable in rank to Knight. As such she and her husband might not be that memorable.

Emrys, however, seems to recall some tale of a married couple in court service at Plateau City disappearing with no trace about several years ago. It was rumored they were researching creatures of the planes and the common consensus was they were killed by something they attempted to summon. He also discerns no significance to the pattern of her dress and concludes it is likely merely decorative.

Edson identifies himself as “the one who saved you”, but is spared the responding dagger glare he receives when he turns his back on her. He worries that the gate may be a trap.

Lanliss agrees about the gate, but proposes the direct approach to finding out.

Velarin and Tishe’ continue to watch and wait.

Seeing no other reaction from her rescuers, Lady Madrigal responds with a flip of her chin, “Well, then, let us attend to the gate and get my husband out of there.” She advances to Edson, “Flying seemed to work quite well for avoiding the power of the Woldsblood. I will, therefore, let you transport me to the gate. Just keep your hands respectable this time.” She turns her back and lifts her arms in preparation for him carrying her.

She doesn’t know what a ‘football team’, but she definitely doesn’t like the dismissive superior attitute of ‘Lady Helena’. And, as Barratorre and Quasphiel, has been reminding her, they are among the most powerful teams in the Wold. Powerful and notable enough to not be a dishrag for a haughty person.

Emrys has heard of her and her husband, though he is a bit surprised she has not been gone that long from the Living Wold. It didn't matter to much, though it change his approach and he simply asks the others, but he was very done with her and takes a more official and commanding tone,

"I am Barratore Steelwind of the Starlight clan, Guardian and Keeper of the Vale, Hero of the Woldian League and you are standing before the Keepers of the Vale and you will be silent and do as you are told. Your request is noted."

He then turns to Emrys, V and Tishe

"Can we simply send her back, or should we all go re-group and start this all over?"

Edson wanting to know more was fine. I don't think she is an illusion Edson, just a distraction and not a very bright one at that

OOC: “football” is meant to represent a popular sport in Plateau City. As most Asian and European cultures have some history of a game played with the foot (for example, soccer), this DM chose to use that term.


Tishe’ decides that it is time to put an end to this noblewoman’s attitude, “Be cooperative, or be silent.”


Like a fish out of water Lady Madrigal’s mouth wordlessly opens and closes, clearly nonplussed to be spoken to in this way.


Edson adds to that and demands, “Tells us about your husband, why are you here and why is he in that gate?”

She responds with a stare. Eventually she finds her voice., “Well, I never!” she exclaims with arms akimbo and another stamp of her foot.

She hesitates, obviously trying to compose herself, a rush of red building in her neck and flushing her face. “I will have you know that my husband and I are very well respected in the court of Plateau City. We came here to explore Koshe Marr. If Gallie had not gotten himself trapped in that gate, we would be the talk of the city when we returned.”


Barratore finishes his introduction and suggests, “"Can we simply send her back, or should we all go re-group and start this all over?"


At this, Helena repeats her fish impression. After a bit, she sputters, “Send me back! Not without my Gallie!”. For a moment, she stands there in apparent shock, then a whimper seems to erupt involuntarily from her throat. She sniffs a bit, then the tears break out like a torrent.

“No, no, no,” she stammers between sobs. She appears to regain some sense of control, then plaintively pleads, “You must, oh you just must, help me get my Gallie.”

That is, after we ensure they have no evil purposes against the Wold. Sieur Emrys, can you Detect Evil? It would be just Ward’s Luck for us to release a demon unsuspecting on the Wold.”

The Spellweaver looks directly at Lady Madrigal. “No delays, now, Madame. Tell us about Gallie and what you know of his entrapment in the Gate? The more we know, the greater chance we can help free him. Leave something out, and he may be in great danger. “

"When you disappeared from Plateau City, it was the consensus that the both of you had attempted to summon something ... or someone! What or who was it?! If you truly want to see Gallie agian ... we need to know what we are up against."

Emrys then casts True Seeing and his eyes begin to glow blue. He casually gazes around her as he waits his answer. The fact that this place is exhibiting different sounds, or the lack thereof, for him and his friends is troubling. Maybe this divination will cut see through the fog.

Tishe’ proposes casting detect evil on the woman.

She looks highly offended at the suggestion she might be evil but says nothing. However, when Tishe’ uses her own pet name for her husband, she first looks in shock, then states very firmly, “That is Lord Galaden or Lord Madrigal to you.”

OOC: Assuming it is cast, no evil is detected.


Lanliss reminds her of her situation and adds to Tishe’s demands for information about the gate.

She apparently realizes that she must deal with her inferiors to get what she wants. Judging by the expression on her face, it is a bitter tasting pill to swallow. She explains, “Gal--, That is, Lord Madrigal and I were attempting to enter the gate. Clever man that he is, he solved the puzzle to open it. Something went horribly wrong, however, as the gate closed just as he entered, trapping him within the gate.”


Barratore ponders why the spell only got them to the gate rather than on the other side of it.

Velarin waits.


Emrys brings up what he recalls of her likely past to which she responds, “No. No. No. We were not summoning anything, but I am surprised that you know enough to have heard court rumors and idle gossip, but not enough to disbelieve them. We are travelers of the planes.” Those last words were said in a dreamy, whispery voice. “Had we been able to penetrate Koshe Marr, we would have been the envy of the court.”


Edson waits and watches.

When Emrys begins casting true seeing Lady Madrigal reacts fearfully, putting her hands in a defensive posture. As he proceeds, a thoughtful look crosses her rather plain face, then she nods in comprehension. “Rude, but understandable….given the circumstances,” she concedes, albeit reluctantly.




Under the effects of true seeing, Lady Madrigal appears no different than she claims to be.

A few moments pass, then the noblewoman, all tears seemingly forgotten, appears to have made a decision, as she explains, ]”As a sign of good faith, I will tell you the puzzle of the gate so that you don’t have to figure it out yourselves.

“When we approached, there were no special markings on it, but when Gal--, Lord Madrigal touched it, a grid of nine slots, eight of which had gems in them, appeared on the right side of the doorway.” She closes her eyes, clearly visualizing what she had seen. “The top row from left to right was Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald; the second row, sapphire, emerald, ruby; and the bottom, sapphire, and blank, emerald.” She opens her eyes and continues, “We figured out that the gems could be slid orthogonally into the blank spot. If we ever moved a gem into a slot that had been previously occupied by a gem of the same color, a burst of energy issued forth. Had we not been protected, it could have killed us. Once we moved the empty slot from the bottom to the center of the top, the gate opened.”

“Again she pauses to remember, before continuing in a subdued, almost whisper “But I don’t know what went wrong. When Gallie attempted to enter, the gate closed on him trapping him in a curtain of solid shadow.”

“That’s all I can tell you.” She glares at them defiantly, saying by posture rather than with words, “I hope you are satisfied.”

V listens and considers. They would need to go through the gate to get to Koshe Mar. Someday he would have to revisit Murphy and speak to his father about tuning forks and planar travel. Honestly the wizard was surprised the woman was still alive and was fairly certain her husband was not. Neither detail he felt inclined to share with anyone, especially her.

V looks to Edson and Lanliss, "Traps and puzzles gentlemen, I believe your specialty"

Tishe’ snorts, but at least tries to control herself; names and insults won’t change the woman. Neither will pointing out the obvious that the Keepers are also, by the very definition of being ‘here’, plane travelers. “Galaden, Lord Madrigal. Right.”

Instead, she thinks on the puzzle, or twin puzzles of how to get to the Gate and how to open. How far does it look again? “I could”, she confirms, “or if close enough, a DimDoor will work. The flying and energy resistance needed, however, seems to almost be designed to drain resources from travelers before ever even entering. We should be careful to spend as little as we can.”

Your current position is about 800 feet from the gate. Note also that the area around the gate appears to be free of any streams of Woldsblood, (that is, not closer than 50 feet)but not by much.


Velarin silently ponders the likely survival of the trapped traveler. He defers to Edson and Lanliss for puzzle solutions.

Barratore is not impressed and raised the question of getting to the gate, asking Lady Matrigal of her ability to assist.

Tishe’ is not impressed, but chooses to focus on getting to and through the gate. She suggests using dimension door, but advises on conserving resources.

Edson is ready and asks if Lanliss is.

Emrys and Lanliss watch and wait.


Lady Madrigal ponders a moment, then replies to Barratore, “I have much skill in that area. Until I have time to recover and rest, I am, however, unable to assist with any flying or dimensioning. I could cast floating disk on one of you who could then use it to transport a rider or two.

She stands there tapping her foot. (At least she is no longer stamping it, for now.)

Realizing what is happening, Lady Madrigal reaches out and grabs Edson just as the spell is cast. Not having the capacity to bring her along, but being quite the experienced caster, she is able to focus the power of the spell such that the persistent noblewoman is in fact the one who is left behind. OOC: Tishe’ automatically succeeds on the DC19 spellcraft check to define which extra creature of the ones that are touching each other is not affected by the spell.


Lanliss takes a look at the gate, but there is no sign of the puzzle.

Emrys takes a careful look at the puzzle. Your knowledge checks will be addressed, likely in the next post.

Barratore allows the rogues to do their work and proposes they proceed through the gate together once it is open.

Velarin congratulates Tishe’ on the successful transport and keeps an eye on Lady Madrigal.

Edson makes the jump and watches.

Now that the Keepers are at the gate, they can see it more clearly. It is freestanding, not attached to any wall. Rectangular in shape, it rises to a height of about forty feet and spreads to a width of thirty feet. From your current position, it is not possible to see how deep it is. Centered in this rectangular plane is a six inch deep recess in the shape of a catenary arch, widest at the ground and stretching to about twenty-five feet at its highest point and spreading to about eight feet from either outer edge at its base.

The outer, rectangular portion appears to be made of a single piece of jet black obsidian with no visible joints or breaks. Situated as it is, streams of glaring scarlet Woldsblood twisting around it on any side (but none closer than 50 feet), it stands dark and silently unwelcoming. The material in the recessed archway appears to be of some unrecognisable dark gray opaque material.

Emrys Highlight to display spoiler: { You see a motionless figure within the gray material, standing and facing you with his right hand stretching toward you. The closest part to you, his hand, appears to be about three feet from the surface. He matches the description of Galaden Madrigal.}

There is no sign of the panel that Lady Madrigal described.

Our only means of communication is via email.  That means that as a part of your membership, you are responsible for checking email daily.  The easy way of course is to check emails before making your post.  Even if you are playing via phone at times, check your email.

We've only had to fuss at a few over the years for not reading emails.  We've only had to threaten 1 with probation for not communicating.  We have seen an increase in difficulty when trying to reach members [players and DMs] over the last year or two so I'm sending this reminder.

To be a member here, this is one of your responsibilities like posting.  I'm tempted to have Sheriff Zach list names of folks who did not reply to emails within 24 hrs on posting days.  No I'm not there yet.  :)

Barratore starts to move over to Tishe, concerned something might have happened to her, but quickly picks up several colorful phrases he does not need to understand in order to understand and the fighter wisely gives her room.

The gate was a puzzle and the puzzle was not revealing itself. V made a good point, but the fighter was curious about something.

Barratore slides his bow from his shoulder and fires off a few arrows at the gate.

Lanliss is puzzled by the lack of a puzzle.

Tishe’ is annoyed by Helena’s attempt to stow away on her spell. Thank you for “white-handed treadle”.

Emrys shares what he sees in the archway.

Velarin reminds the others that Lady Madrigal said the puzzle did not appear until the structure was touched. While keeping a wary eye on her.

Barratore fires arrows at the gate.


Edson makes a careful search for traps. You find no indication of any traps here.



The arrow fired straight ahead bounces off the solid gray material. It appears, at first, that it might have slightly penetrated, but there is no sign of any mark remaining. Barratore has no problem hitting the 6” of the interior wall that is exposed. His arrow strikes the stone of the wall with a louder sound of impact than the first arrow did when striking the gray material. It ricochets into the archway and then hurtles harmlessly away from the arch. Other than the absence of any marks, nothing is unusual about the way the arrow bounces off of the two surfaces. Similarly, the third arrow bounces off the unyielding stone without leaving any visible mark. “ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!” screeches Lady Madrigal in wordless frustration. “Curse this woldsblood. I will find a way to get to my Galli!” Even at this distance, Valerian can see the women’s frustration as she paces back and forth, obviously trying to find a safe way through the Woldsblood streams to return to the arch.

Edson reacts to the woman’s scream and keeps an eye out for an ambush.

Tishe’ is drawn to the challenge of the puzzle, touches the wall, and proposes a plan to deal with the expected energy releases. She is so focused on the task as to not notice anything else.

Barratore processes the results of the arrow experiment and endorses Tishe’s plan.

Velarin’s suggestion for caution is interrupted by Tishe’s touching of the wall.

Emrys and Lanliss wait for their time to act.



When Tishe’ touches the wall, the expected panel does not appear; rather, a small shelf slides out from the smooth surface of the arch. This shelf is about eight inches square, one inch thick, and is centered in the right column about three feet above the ground. Setting on this shelf, oddly enough, also having slid out from the wall, rests a four inch diameter bowl seemingly made of the same material as the wall. Set beside it on the shelf is a pestle also made of black obsidian. On the wall just above the newly formed shelf, appears a simple line drawing of a tiny plant with two flowers, each bearing five petals. Almost as soon as it appears, the image fades from sight. If the Keepers had not been focusing so intensely, it might have been missed.

No one can a flower where Emrys is pointing.


He then takes a closer look at the equipment on the shelf and observes a gray residue on the bottom of the pestle. Highlight to display spoiler: {This residue is the same shade of gray as the petals of the flower no one else appears to be able to see.}

Edson tenses as Emrys takes up the mortar and pestle and keeps an eye on Lady Madrigal. At approximately 800 feet away, you cannot see much, but she is still there and she occasionally walks around.

Nothing untoward happens when Emrys picks up the mortar and pestle.

If it was a sound, it definitely did not come from anywhere near the gate and did not appear to be related to the picking up of the tools. It was probably just a result of the tension of being in this alien place.

But then why not the other? Did something happen to them before they could? This is presenting a rather interesting conundrum."

A scream pierces the eerie silence. Despite the distance, the Keepers at the gate can hear the distress in Lady Madrigal’s shriek. As her scream draws your attention, you see a circle of flames erupt encircling the noble wizard’s position. To experienced adventurer’s such as yourselves, it seems quite likely that she just cast wall of fire. Outside of this fiery circle are eight bipedal creatures. A few of them jump back at the sudden flames. About a second later you hear their
yelps of surprise and pain. It is difficult to make out details, as you are about 800 feet away, but seven of the creatures outside the circle seem to be the size of halflings or goblins, while the eighth is of human size.


Should you choose to intervene, actions will now progress in rounds.

After hearing a stray giggle from the ether, he quickly turns his head in that direction ... hoping to catch a glimpse of ... something!

Upon hearing Velarin's words of caution, he replies, "Agreed," for he is beginning to no longer trust his own senses. "I hope that everyone can AT LEAST see the mortar and pestle that I'm holding in my hands, right now? Lanliss, the residue within it very similar in color and odor to the flower at my feet."

Suddenly a scream pierces the deafening silence and he turns his head in that direction. At least this time his eyes enjoy the feast of actually seeing something .. which allows him to feel a little less mad than what he was becoming. "We have visitors."

It is a testament to how much Lady Helena has gotten under her skin, that Tishe’s first thought was, ‘great, the silly thing is going to cost us no matter what’’ and the second is ‘she’s taking care of herself just fine, we don’t need to help’.

The Sorceress reproaches herself “That’s no way for a hero to think, Tishe’. “You are named Fateweaver. Go weave some fate.” And then she says louder to her fellow Keepers. “I’m DimDorring back. Hold on.”

She delays until others have the opportunity to gather near and casts Dim Door to arrive 40’ away from the wall of fire (to avoid effects) and 50 feet from any WoldLine.

V corrects himself, reporting that he saw the flower appear when the gate was touched, and furthermore, it appears that there was only ever one flower on this plant.

"Let us not be hasty. Make sure that the creatures have ill intent. The lady is half out of her mind, and may have acted with no cause. We should attempt to speak with them first. Remember the halflings story. not all is as it appears here."

Missing the creatures approaching, Barratore chides himself for getting distracted. Tishe Dimensionally shifts them back. more resources gone and they haven't even gotten to a land others go by accident and with far less power on a fairly regular basis. The fighter is beginning to have serious doubts that they are protected from divinational magic and Warrd's constant interference to test Edson and Lanliss.

Emrys hears the scream, relieved to finally have something clearly tangible to react with.

Lanliss reluctantly admits the need to save the Lady.

Velarin explains the situation with the flower only to be interrupted by Helena’s scream and readies to go to her aid.

Edson draws his bow, but defers acting on any violence.

Tishe’ dimension doors the Keepers to a save location outside the circle of fire.

Barratore steps through the door and takes aim at the larger creature.

Stepping through Tishe’s door, the Keepers arrive about 40’ away from Helena’s circle of fire. Inside she is busily casting a spell. Outside of the circle are also the creatures you saw from afar. The smaller ones appear to be human children, but by no means cute ones. Each appears as though they have been flayed alive, their revealed musculature a sickly bloodless gray. Their eyes burn glow with a hue almost, but not quite, the same as that of the streams of Woldsblood surrounding you.

The remaining individual is indeed mansize, but at close range bears no resemblance to a human. Its skin is festooned with razored shards of metal, oozing dark red blood. From its bleeding shoulders two skeletal wings protrude.

It lurches in shock and pain as Barratore’s arrow strikes true, catching it flat-footed. He sees the creature has some resistance to damage, but his missile forces through most of it. It screams in anger and pain, then turns and draws a slender dagger. The glares it focuses on the minotaur is insanely lit by hatred and suppressed agony. Barratore make a Will save DC 31 versus fear or be paralyzed for one round.

Lady Madrigal’s spell takes effect. A field of rubbery black tentacles appear in the ground in a 20’ radius spread engulfing all but three of the children. Although the area is now difficult terrain, it appears to not have otherwise affected any of the creatures.
Surprised by the sudden appearance of foes, the children react to defend themselves. The two closest of them direct stares at Barratore Highlight to display spoiler: {. [i]Two times: make a Will save DC 15 (this is a mind affecting effect) or become convinced that everyone is an enemy. If you fail the save, you must treat all creatures as enemies and take AoO of anyone who provokes. Also on a failed save, if adjacent to two or more creatures you take a -2 penalty on attack rolls weapon damage rolls, ability checks, skill checks, and saving throws.}

The remaining children direct a glare at different foes. For each glare, make a DC18 Will save against fear or take a -4 penalty on attack rolls, skill checks, and ability checks for the specified number of rounds.

Velarin quickens a Haste spell to effect the whole party and then casts a chain lightning targeting C6, which should get all but one of the creatures.(Damage: 81. reflex save for c6 is 27. reflex save for the rest is 25, for 1/2 damage. SR 27)

Barratore feels the creatures gaze fix on him and try to rip the bravery from him, however the Woldian Hero's will proves stronger for the moment and the minotaur bares his
teeth in a growl of defiance. The leser creatures' attempts to confuse him are more easily pushed aside. "It will take far more than minor mind tricks to make me forget my
family dark creatures."

V's Haste spell invigorates him and he stands his ground and takes aim at the medium sixed horror. Peals of Lightning falsh about as the fighter draws in on his target, the winged creature.

Lanliss moves closer to Barratore and resists the baleful glare of the hideous child looking at him.

Emrys also resists the glare. He recognizes both types of creatures and informs the others. He then casts mass suffocation of the creatures.

Velarin is not affected by the glare directed at him. He casts haste then chain lightning sizzling most of their foes. The two that are not affected by Emrys’ spell, fully succumb to its destructive energy.

Tishe’ attacks three of the suffocating Cantors with lightning, the energy blasting them as they crumple. Damage occurs before they collapse unconscious on their action.

Edson resists the glare directed at him.

Barratore avoids the multiple malevolent gazes focused on him. He then takes deadly aim at the winged fiend, hitting it once, but not penetrating its powerful defenses with his other arrows.



When Emrys casts his spell, the Eremite and five of the closest Cantors creatures grab their throats in the universal sign of being unable to breath.

As the spell continues to rob them of air, they all drop to their knees, then to the ground, apparently unconscious. The two remaining ones shriek in rage and terror, and flee as fast and far as they can, sparks from Velarin’s spell still flickering about them as they run.

Lady Madrigal’s jaw drops in awe as most of her would be attackers drop harmlessly and the other two flee in terror.

The sound of Barratore's sword masterfully slashing into their flesh makes Emrys cringe just a bit. It's hard to forget that he was once on the receiving end of that very sword while possessing a giant, purple worm. Such a strange sensation dying is, he thinks.

Tishe’ asks, “Lady Helena, are you hurt?”


To which the nonplussed woman eventually manages to reply, “No. No, I don’t think so.”
Tishe then proposes traveling via portable hole.



Lanliss supports Tishe’s idea.

Barratore finishes their helpless foes, then raises concerns about portable hole size.

Emrys uncomfortably accepts the need to finish off the Kytons.

Velarin proposes another dimension door with Lady Helena this time.

Edson enjoys the prospect of having control over the other Keepers.




Lady Helena finally remembers to end her spell which had been burning throughout the Keeper’s discussion. She hesitates a moment and replies, quietly, “Thank you.”

The DM is going with the dimension door and fly option. We can retcon if there are objections.


When the others prepare to jump, she first looks to Velarin for confirmation before taking Edson’s hand, a sharp contrast to her behavior the last time the Keepers made this jaunt.

Once back at the gate, Lady Helena stares at the shelf and the objects on it. “This isn’t right,” she muses aloud. “This wasn’t here when we were trying to get in.” She looks, bewildered, first at the table then at each of the Keepers. Once again, she is uncharacteristically silent.

The lady’s comments cement Tishe’s thoughts. “It changes every time, eh? To make it easy but not real easy. I don’t have any waxed picks for this knot.” And she looks to one of the rogues or Emrys to have a solution.

A thought strikes Tishe’, and she tries real hard to hear the singing again. Maybe it was the Kytons, maybe something else...

Barratore is thankful the woman is unhurt and that she is behaving better as well. The business done, Barratore cleans the balde and sheathes it and stores the bow to his back strap again.

Lanliss expresses concerns.

Tishe’ processes Helena’s reaction and listens for singing or laughter. She hears none.

Barratore suggests duplicating the flower they have or having the Edson or Lanliss bypass the puzzle.

Having successfully and safely returned the group to the gate, Velarin suggests grinding the last flower.

Edson is willing to try Barratores suggestion.

Lady Madrigal BLUSHES at Edson’s mention of naming her firstborn after him.

Emrys keeps watch.



With Lanliss’s help, Edson attempts to override the gate entry mechanism, focusing intensely on finding a way to create an opening. After some time and multiple attempts, he senses, more than sees, a presence in the shadow shrouded gateway.

Suddenly, Edson starts convulsing, obviously in excruciating pain. Edson only, Highlight to display spoiler: {You see sickly red boils with gray pus-filled centers erupt over every inch of exposed skin and feel them forming over your entire body. They painfully expand and grow, threatening to rupture.}

Lady Helena shrieks in fear and rushes to Edson's side.

DM comment To clarify: the two red orbs faded away before Edson's eyes. At no time did they ever contacted him.

Tishe’s lips curve into a smile at Barratorre’s casual comment, then they press into a frown. “Pain and disease? Sounds like we are working on the right immortal, not to name names. Now, we’ve been told that ‘he’ wants people trapped in his pocket nightmare; that it’s getting out is the problem. So there has to be a simple solution if we can but find it.”

Barratore gives the others room to work and shoulders the unconscious noblewoman.

Tishe’ seeks inspiration within herself and realizes that a malicious creator of a puzzle to be solved would likely give only vague clues as to its solution and possibly throw in some irrelevant details, such as the number of flowers required.

Velarin is ready to attempt to grind their remaining flower.

Emrys keeps his own counsel.



Eventually Lady Helena regains consciousness. Her eyes grow large when she realizes where she is. Barratore feels the lady tense, likely in anger, then slowly, as with great effort, relax. "Um. Thank you, I think.” She pauses a moment before continuing, “Would you put me down….um, please.”

Once again, the Keepers find themselves surrounded by unnatural noiselessness. No one hears any occasional laughter or singing; only the sounds they themselves make break the silence.

Tishe’ tells the other Keepers her insight, adding. “I remember a riddle from my childhood in Hook City. “ I’m tall when I’m young, taste like mint candy, and I’m short when I’m old, what am I?” She only pauses only a moment, and answers. “I’m a candle. The middle part is just to make it difficult.”

“We should remember that The Power of Maliciousness will do things just because it is fun to watch us squirm.” She nods at Lanliss’ suggestion.

Emrys is much relieved that the pain no longer infects Edson, but he isn't certain if his spell was the reason. It's quite perplexing.

"Curses are extremely difficult to discern by their very nature. And I know many that cause delusions in the mind. But I'm not entirely convinced this was one ... no sulfuric odor after being dispelled! Edson, hold still while I scrutinize you further."

(Emrys casts Detect Magic and actively focuses it at Edson.)
