Stock is too surprised to enter a rage. Instead he readies his flail and tries to line up a swing at one of those harassing Sid.

Breaking out of his focus as hands attack them Zander swings at the one that attempted to crawl up his leg with his sword. He tries to remember if these are some form of undead.

When he sees the sudden motion, Micah lowers his center of gravity. Timing it correctly, he puts as much of his body and legs into the blow he makes with his heavy shield as one of the hands(!) approaches.

Using the wand still in his hand, he casts bless, then stows it in his belt.

Stohp trying to stop is an attack, pinning it to the ground is another attack, you can't do both stomps the one near her hitting it easily. But only doing minimal damage to it. according to your character sheet your unarmed melee damage is d4-1

Bartomus surprises himself by hitting the crawling hand near Carver slicing it in half and destroying it!

Carver steps back and pulling his longsword is ready to attack, but is not able to as Bartomus already killed it.

Stock goes over to help Sid and swings his flail. He is rewarded with a satisfying smack rendering the crawling hand into a pile of mummified dust and bits of bone.

Zanderallen easily determines that these crawling hands are a form of mindless undead. He efficiently skewers the one at his feet twisting the blade around as he does so way over-killing it.

Micah powers his shield into one of the hands leaping at him and feels a moment of triump as he hears the crunching of old bones and puff of dried flesh keeping it together. Yes he's destroyed one. Then he uses the wand to cast Bless.

Sid whips out his blade and strikes at the one crawling up his body. His two quick blows are effective and destroy the creature.

The crawling hand on Stohp again comes at her, but apparently it is limping now and is unable to even touch her. Attack 5

The one already on Micah makes a grapple check as it has worked its way up to his neck.
CMB 18 (d20). It is now strangling Micah no speaking or casting spells.

The one on the ground near Micah goes after Zanderallen (d2). It races over on its fingertips and leaps...attack 9, but misses.

The one on the ground near Sid goes after Stock (d2). Its digits flex and leap, but fall short, attack 16.

Startled as the hand closes around Micah's neck Zander drops his sword and draws a dagger. With the smaller blade he angrily carves the hand off his friend. "Are you alright Micah?"

"Thank you", gasps Micah, his eyes wide and wild as Zanderallen accurately slays the abominable thing at his throat.

He does a quick look around, then moves to a location that gets him in range of the remaining hands and releases a burst of holy energy.

Sid kills the thing trying to attack Stock.

Stohp looks for something to contain the crawling hand but there is nothing in this room that would work. Trying to pin it she fails.

Carver trots over to Zanderallen and kills the hand near him.

Stock having no current enemy, knows that these tiny things could not have made so many tracks as he has seen going through the center of this room.

Zanderallen effortlessly stabs the hand around Micah's throat and removes it from his friend, killing the hand in the process.

Micah moves and quickly channels to rid the place of the last hand.

The room is now clear of evil doings. Well the evil doings that are put together. Some mad necromancer type or deranged wizard sure could use the components in this room to whip up some golems. But then is the tool itself evil?

We don't need room placement positions anymore. Andy you can remove the Immune To Stench from your headers.

Bartomus points to the far door and indicates that is their destination.

Stohp is ready to leave the room.

Stock checks for traps and is sure there are none so he goes to open the door.

Zanderallen looks at the old bones hanging from chains over the acid pit. That's all they are, the acid was/is used to clean the bones of 'meat' so they could be used in the golem...or skeletons.

Carver looks up at the bones hanging from hooks as well, there are maybe 7 bones still on chains. Mostly smaller bones, like a kobolds.

Micah moves toward the door ready to cast owl's wisdom.

Sid tries to stop Stock from opening the door before the 'professional' can check it out. Too late.

Stock's attempt to swing the door open (hinges are on the other side) is met with great resistance and he sort of bounces from the door as he expected it to open.

The door is locked. Disable Device 25 needed.

It is Darkwood so hacking the door down will have to get through a hardness 8 and 30 hitpoints, and breaking it is a DC25 check. Of course if you do either of those then you could not potentially harvest an entire door made of Darkwood. The carpenters among you should recognize the value as you could get 1- a tower shield and maybe a bow or spear, or 2- two heavy shields and spear or bow, or 3- a bunch of spears, staffs, bows and such.

"What?" Stock turns around and looks at Sid. "Next thing I know you'll be sending the Rogue's Union after me for checking a door." He holds his hand out to Sid to work on the lock.

Hearing Stohp's comment he turns back to the door. He then puts his face really close to it, inspecting the grain in the wood. "Well I'll be...I was too busy doing Sid's job to notice. Strange place for an expensive door. Stohp - Maybe we salvage this thing on our way out. I might be able to carry it."

Sid smiles at the Dwarf, "No that's fine, you can deal with the traps and triggers while I play berserker. No seriously I just worry. On the way out I can trigger some of the traps I found if you want to try yourself though." Sid starts examining the door hoping his tone was as jovial as he thought then he works on disarming any traps he finds and opens the locks Sid works on the locks. He will then look at the door to assist on unhinging it if possible.

Stohp examines the door. It's actually in fair condition. Nothing some pine oil and a cloth couldn't do to restore it.

Carver wonders if they can just destroy the hinges of the door, but they are on the other side of the door. Not sure what the engineering roll is for

Stock cracks a joke and examines the wood of the door. Definitely needs some oil to bring the grains out more.

Bartomus wonders about putting the door in their headquarters.

Micah reminds them all to keep focused and detects no magical auras from the door.

Zanderallen contemplates asking the necromancer nicely for some things.

Sid at last examines the door and finds it trap free, really that's a foregone conclusion as Stock would have triggered any trap when he attempted to open the door. He expertly unlocks the door. Not sure what the engineering roll is for

Swinging open the door because there's no immediate trap or threat the party observers a corridor here that is 40 feet long, 20 feet wide. It angles down slightly. Elfvision and darkvision can see a bronze door at the far end. At least you assume it's bronze, it's got that aged bronze look. There appears to be some sort of etchings or decorations in the door, but you really can't make it out that well from here. Remarkably there doesn't appear to be that much dust or cobwebs in this hallway.

Bartomus tossed a sling bullet in his hand and caught it instead of spying it down the hall as he had intended when he saw Sid heading towards the far door. "if Sid opens it, and the floor doesn't fall out in front of us, do we want to send in Carver at a gallop and we just follow along?

Sid bows at Stock's and Z's kindness. Sid holds his everburning torch behind him so his low-light vision isn't shot and looks forward intently trying to ascertain any traps before him. If there is a path in dust or anything he will follow that while scrutinizing the hall. Any traps he sees he will disable and mark any triggers he can't. When he makes it to the bronze doors he checks it for traps and unlocks it if needs be.

Micah keeps detecting magic.

Carver, tense, is ready for action.

Bartomus prepares, I think technically you are supposed to roll on Loot and Booty for HP but since you've already done it....

Sid gets to work.

Even as Sid spots it Micah calls out. There's something magical in the middle of the hallway.

Sid is able to determine that the mark on the floor is a trap and calls upon his training to expertly disable it. He then determines that there are no traps on the next door and that it is unlocked.

Once closer, Micah too can determine there are no magical auras on the door. The relief work upon this door is merely artistic design. Never-the-less it is actually quite pleasing and you estimate that a talented artist worked many long hours. With no threat the door is swung inward (note there are designs on the other side of the door as well, pretty much the same pattern).

The next room is 20 feet high and you immediately note the walls are covered floor to ceiling with bookshelves. Bookshelves filled with books of all shapes and sizes. In the distance you can see that there are also book cases in the room, double sided approximately 8 foot tall. These too are filled with books. The room is not a standard design as there is a large alcove along the back, it too is lined with books. But also in this alcove there appears to be a desk with a candelabra sitting upon it. There is one chair at the table and what appears to be piles of books on the floor around the table. There appears to be no dust or cobwebs in this room.

Micah's detect magic will ping off several locations in the room. Following those pings will reveal several arcane scrolls: symbol of pain , telekinesis, dimension door, dispel magic, magic circle against good,
blindness/deafness, command undead , and expeditious retreat.

Bartomus walked into the library and found himself in awe of all of the books. "Look at all the books," he said aloud but more to himself. His mind started looking at the shelves, then counting, and soon he realized, "Folks there are thousands, maybe like four thousand or so books, just estimating on the number of shelves."

He walked over to the desk and picked up various books. He couldn't read any of them, but looked at the craftwork and the illustrations in those that had them. "Um, uh, anyone know what these say? Someone was busy working on something it would seem."

Sid looks on in wonder at all the books and does not squee in joy. Slapping himself he clears his throat and gets about looking for traps, disabling any he finds. After that he scans the books to see if he can read any of them or if they look interesting. IF they do or he doesn't understand what they say he will start moving them to the Shield's Handy Haversack unless otherwise directed else where.

Stohp is well versed in both Draconic and Undercommon so is capable of reading the titles of any book that catches anyone's interest. She reads several of the titles out loud. (appraise 15, perception 21). "Don't get too distracted, we're here on a mission and looking at the books can come later."

She says this despite being unable to resist pulling down the most interesting one in reach and looking at the first page before shaking herself and putting it back. She tries to judge the age of the collection - is this something that once belonged to the drow that was lost and should be returned, or is it the evil wizard's personal collection and fine to loot?

He takes a moment to examine the elaborately carved door and then moves through the room to the far bronze door, examining it for traps.

Micah, too, is impressed by the amazing collection of books, but he forces himself to focus only on the magical auras for now.

He takes a quick look at each magical scroll, calling off each one before placing them in his scroll case. Should anyone request one of them, he willingly hands it over.

He nods agreement when Stohp reminds everyone now is not the time for books just as he was about to cast comprehend languages on himself.

Once again, he prepares to cast owl's wisdom should foes be on the other side of the door.

Zanderallen waits while the books and scrolls are assessed, moving to the far door while Sid checks it for traps. The library is certainly impressive but he's never had much of a head for books. He much preferred martial exercise or debate. But to each their own as he shakes his head at those going crazy over the selection. He echoes the sentiments of several others, "I hate to break up the fun but we probably need to go have a conversation with the curator of this library before we haul it off, a very painful conversation."[/b]

Bartomus quickly counts the books.

Sid is astounded by the array of books and even contemplates putting them in his handy haversack, alas that is WAY to small to hold much two cubic feet or 20 pounds. He keeps his head on his shoulders as he checks for traps.

Stohp occupies the time with trying to find out what's on the shelves.

Stock, while examining the far door, laments Dorbin's absence. Indeed this module was designed to give the magic user a bone, since it seemed he was always on the short end of treasure...feel free to email him and taunt him..

Micah finds the spell scrolls and takes them. Oh, also the candelabra detects as magical, the candles are all tipped with continual flame, 5 candles.

Zanderallen doesn't feel the lure of the books....well maybe once Stohp gives an estimate of what's there...

Carver aids in the language of the books but stays alert.

Languages for the books, sorry that should have said 50% in Undercommon, 25% in Common, 25% in Draconic. OF those the Draconic mostly deal with theories of magic, magical philosophies, esoteric traditions, and some manuals on golem construction but non magical. OF the remaining 75%: 15% are old bardic tales / poems, etc. (some publishing house could really rake it in with a translator), 45% are historic (well some were historic at the time and some were more like present day non-fiction but because they are so old they are now historic as well), 5% are musical composition, and 10% are books on war tactics (of drow and lizard folk) as well as manuals of arms for different weapon types. Surprising in that with no ladders or step stools of any kind no one has wondered how the books on the upper shelves (the room is 20 foot high) got up there...

Though Stock could see no traps on the door, Sid readily pointed it out. In fact it looks rather nasty. It is an mechanical electrical trap Electricity Arc Trap CR 4. He is able to disarm it though. The door is not otherwise locked. And swinging it open Sid can see because I'm assuming he's still carrying one of his everburning torches that a hallway goes about 30 feet west and then turns south.

Sid picks 10 Volumes of those in Draconic, 2 of each catagetory. "We have to live and come back here to get these. We'll have to stop by the WLA and do paperwork, but I can do that... No way! I think this is an original of The Falconer's Way, most libraries have only records of fragments. It's a short, melancholic piece in 12 parts parts Eloahwin Silverharp, AND HERE'S VOLUME 2?!?" Sid stashes the 2-200 page books and opens the doors after finding and disarming the trap.

"Agreed Sid, if we survive and the owner isn't alive, well then we could make a good claim to these," Bartomus said as he put down one of the large tomes with detailed illustrations of armies, maps, and weapons. He decided to put the book into his backpack, "I think this is one to show to the Princesses and our Lizard Folk friends. Might explain the buildings we found ourselves fighting in."

He followed the other Shields as he looked about and realized that there were no ladders and really no dust. "Um hey folks, so, how do you think the books on the top shelve got there? Or got brought down to the table? Maybe those wandering hands?? Or, someone got another idea?"

Sid snatches a few books and then heads cautiously into the hallway.

Even Stohp becomes enthralled by the books.

Bartomus takes a book and wonders how the books are kept clean and how they were put on those really high shelves.

Stock moves with Sid, and tries to sniff out anything suspicious.

Carver stands ready.

Zanderallen tells everyone to stay on target. Hopefully having a better ending than Gold 5 did...and if you don't know that reference I shall have to beat you about head and shoulders.

Micah is all business and ready to go.

AS you leave the library you note that the books on the table were not in good condition, there was evidence of mold, mildew, rot, and in general something that has not weathered the ages well. Also they appear to have been swept off the table in disgust as they are even more torn from falling to the floor. They are not books you would consider typical for this library. You remember that the trog's had apparently looted at least 1 bookcase that you found, these are probably those books...maybe more.

Alas Sid is able to discover another magical trap upon the floor just around the bend in the hallway. And once again he smudges a few lines and erases a few others and renders another Symbol of Pain neutered.

At the end of the tunnel there is a plain wooden door. Stock gets some wiffs of chemicals, but he is unable to determine what kind.

As the others moved forward, he did the same trying to make sure that Carver could do some charging if necessary. Stohp tries to reason out why some books were left on the floor.

As Sid enters the room he does a quick, and incredible detailed, scan of the room with his elvish vision (and the torch he holds high). Just for a second he catches a glimpse of a vaguely humanoid creature is about the size of a cat but looks more like a toothy, winged devil. That was hanging from the wall near the south 'x' on the map. It quickly squirled into the 'rat-hole' when you entered the room.
Knowledge Arcane 20 (for Sid and anyone that Sid points out the creature to, or describes the creature to) Highlight to display spoiler: {It is an Homunculus-refers to the arcane concept of an small artificially created being, presumably brought into existence by certain means of alchemy or magic.}

Then Sid and Stock (et all) size up the next room. There are 4 tables, 3 appear to be distilling and mixing tables with all manner of glass vials, beakers, mortar and pestles, small oil lamp burners, large oil lamps (neither lit), and various notebooks. Behind the tables on the west wall are numerous cubby holes shelves holding numerous vials of liquid, powdered somethings, and perhaps dried herbs. You believe that there are 2 complete alchemical labs here.The last table has several racked vials. Micah detects magic from one of the racks of vials. like you would get from magical potions

The far end of the room has a stone door. Micah also detects magic from the door...upon the door?

He turned to a few of the older Shields, "So not like the Rapke that gave me this ring? Something different and not good? Could that along with the bone-hands be what is keeping everything running down here?"

He waited to see what the next door revealed. But did notice that the rooms were getting smaller. As he looked about, he asked, "So, do you think then this is the person who led the efforts to steal the books and stuff from the old village we first walked through?"

Micah frowns at Sid's description and Carver's explanation. "We can assume then that we are being watched the entire time," he observes gravely.

He turns to Stock and muses aloud, "I wonder what Emily Jasmine would do with that thing."

As time allows he retrieves the items with auras and inspects them.

With the threat of imminent conflict in the fore front Zanderallen unconsciously tightens and adjusts a couple straps on his armor and shield while he waits for Sid to clear the door. "Sid, it has been far too long since I told you how glad I am to have you along. Your eyes and fingers are much better at dealing with traps than Stock's face." He keeps glancing up at where Sid says the creature disappeared, somewhat uneasy after Carver's explanation of what it is.

Sid checks the stone door for traps but doesn't find any.

Carver thinks the creature Sid saw might be a Homunculus.

Bartomus does some wondering.

Micah takes the magically glowing (to him) potions and warns Sid that the door radiates magic.

Zanderallen unconsciously prepares for battle.

Oh the ceiling in here is 15 feet high, and there's a fine layer of dust on everything. EXCEPT Stock can see those tracks traipsing from the stone door to the wooden door you just came through. They go straight down the room.

Sid thinks the door is clear, Micah says there's something up with the door. Herein lies the problem, Sid's perception check was too low to spot the trap, so therefore his disable device check does not apply since he cannot see it.
Option 1 - Sid can take 20 and try to perceive the trap again, yes it's trapped let's assume that as a given. Taking 20 he will detect it. However, this will take time Taking 20 means you are trying until you get it right, and it assumes that you fail many times before succeeding. Taking 20 takes 20 times as long as making a single check would take (usually 2 minutes for a skill that takes 1 round or less to perform).
Option 2 - Someone could try to dispel the magic on the door, but your magic user is gone.
Option 3 - Traps, What traps! Stock goes berserker and charges the door.

Now I'm not completely evil, contrary to what John and Zachary may think. Sid's disable device was good enough to have actually disabled the device, I will let that roll stand if you want to go with option 1.

However, he's just not sure, something is off in some of them (*), a bitter smell, the colors swirling slightly foggy, it's like an itch behind the eyeballs. You can feel it but you can't scratch it.

Concentrating on the door Micah gets a mild aura of necromancy.

Light Sources and Illumination just a reminder your torches, everburning lances/torches, lit maces, and glowing swords, provide normal vision in a 20 foot radius and provide you dim vision in a 40 foot radius. Low light can See up to 40 foot from a torch light source and gets 20 feet of murky shadows beyond that.
ALSO, you don't need to be in the light field to see what the light field reveals. Example. You can be on the west side of someone carrying a torch and outside that light field, but still see to the extent of your vision east of the light source.

Sid smiles at Z, "Thanks! I got to earn my keep somehow" and then frowns at Micah and looks at the door again. "So my dear Dwarf, when one is searching for that which others deem by necessity to be hidden you must use everything in your environment to help you uncover what you are searching for, like a friend or an ally warning you that you may be about to blow your self or your compatriots up. Hmm," he takes a couple of minutes to look high and low from as many angles as he can, moving the torch to change the light around him in each pose until he has his aha moment. "Aha! Here see this..." and Sid will show Stock the trap and disable it. He doesn't explain what he does but says, "If you're also curious about the manner one goes about disabling such things, we can talk about that at HQ. This isn't the right environment for that. Too likely to blow up in your face."

Bartimeus follows in with the other Shields. But he also takes a walk around and the upper corners of the Room trying to get a sense if there's a nother exit for the little creature that they have been hearing if not seen.

Micah sighs in relief as Sid rechecks the door, "It appears to be necromatic in nature. Based on what we have encountered up to this point, my guess is it is a Symbol of Pain. You are happy to miss that one.

Once again Micah prepares to proceed watching with detect magic and ready to cast owl's wisdom at the first sign of trouble.
