DM Robert - never interupt a villan during a soliloquey Saturday August 22nd, 2020 11:14:57 AM
Sid heeds Micah's advice and takes his time re-examining the door. And it's a good thing, turns out the trap was a symbol of weakness and would have affected 4 persons.
Stohp waits while Sid does his job.
Stock goes bursting through the door.
Carver readies to proceed.
Bartomus checks the room and sees there was another rat hole in the wall.
Micah prepares to casts spells.
Zanderallen? ______________
The door swings open with a hollow echoing thud. The next room is large. At least 180 feet away you can see a chair and table with a burning candelabra upon it (the yellow square). The walls are smooth and have a faint purple phosphorescence. At the far end there appears to be an old chair and table with a figure standing next to it.(the Lich). There appear to be six bodies in standing near the lich. knowledge religion 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { they are kobold zombies.}
AS the door thuds open a several of you scamper through. From the far end of the room the Lich speaks, in a calm voice "Gerard has kept me informed of your coming." Seriously how did you not have some sort of alarm or message system set up to find out before now, we've been down here for at least 12 hours, I half expected you to have a small summoned army waiting for us." She says this all in a tone of disbelieving disappointment, as if the lich is a child or student she expects better from.

Carver is imprisoned in the spell. Sorry I disagree that Carver is 12 foot long. He's large, the longest he could be is 10. Most horses are actually around 8 foot long. And at his level he has enough feet to encompass you, I checked.
Micah runs forward while wondering about the strange skeleton. You know...Much more powerful than standard skeletons, these minions of evil are often employed as guardians or protectors to keep sealed some ancient knowledge best left undiscovered. They are intelligent monsters and are not subject to the mindless commands that can be given to such undead as skeletons or zombies. They have a clear mind, and sometimes go against the commands and wishes of those they serve, if it benefits the black skeleton in question. Black skeletons are the remnants of living creatures slain in an area where the ground is soaked through with evil. The bodies of fallen heroes are contaminated and polluted by such evil and within days after their death, the slain creatures rise as black skeletons, leaving their former lives and bodies behind. Black skeletons are intelligent and do maintain some memories of their former lives. it's boggling what you can understand in 6 seconds of adrenaline pumping action.

Feeling a little put out that such an abomination is getting away and there's nothing he can do Zander leaves the zombies for others to take care of. Walking to Carver's prison he puts away his sword and shield and drawing his adamantine war hammer sets himself to the arduous task of breaking Carver out. Silence rains down on the heroes. Sid finds several likenesses drawn on the walls about 25 foot high. On the east there's a man in arcane robes and woman in perhaps clerical vestments, labeled father, mother. On the west there is a male warrior named Georges', a female in robes labeled Fleckaonda's, and another female in perhaps traveling clothed but holding a lyre, with the name Mariaaoan's beneath it. Of course there is the 'throne' where he was seated. Really it's just a high backed dinner chair, worn, and with a torn cushion, and some new scorch marks. There's a small table to the side with a large book on it, which miraculously seems to have escaped the flame strike spell. Also on the table is an ink well and quill, though the feathers of the quill did not survive the flame strike.
There is also a pile of very worn clothes and other items where the lich stood, and some swords and armor where the black skeleton lies prostrate upon the floor.
After some determined hammering, the Resilient sphere holding Carver cracks and breaks apart allowing him to escape.

Stohp thinks that a large portion cover history that predates the Float being in Turtle Lake. Languages for the books, 50% in Undercommon, 25% in Common, 25% in Draconic. OF those the Draconic mostly deal with theories of magic, magical philosophies, esoteric traditions, and some manuals on golem construction but non magical. OF the remaining 75%: 15% are old bardic tales / poems, etc. (some publishing house could really rake it in with a translator), 45% are historic (well some were historic at the time and some were more like present day non-fiction but because they are so old they are now historic as well), 5% are musical composition, and 10% are books on war tactics (of drow and lizard folk) as well as manuals of arms for different weapon types. However to wade through all the tomes and properly asses them would require a linguistics challenge and several months of reading.
Bartomus remembers the terms the Drow offered you. Solve the problem, any loot you find is yours as part of your payment. Further, turning this find over to the Sages Guild, headquartered in The Float, would easily put all of you at the minimum WBL for your current level.
Zanderallen looking at the books realizes that it would take many boxes to crate all these books up.Maybe after you ascended and turned over the gate key to the Drow the gate would then be reactivated and moving and toting could be arranged after contacting the Sages Guild about the find. However, there's still the matter of ascending all the way back up the worm tunnel. Those Fly potions would sure come in handy in that.
The faster we get you back up stairs, the faster we get you back to the Float, and the faster you can sell and go to the catacombs to gear up. Your next module is already ready.

Micah (John) HP: 87/87 AC: 27/12/27 CMD:20 Monday September 7th, 2020 10:33:09 AM
Micah thinks a bit about the discussion before adding, Stoph, what you said earlier about him not behaving like he really wanted to stop us makes sense. Perhaps he has become so lonely in his undead immortality that, either consciously or not, he no longer wishes to go on. If that is so, he may have left a clue to his phylactery and not made it too difficult to find. If we focus on the books here and the ones that seemed more recently used in the other chambers, that might be all we would need to study should such a clue be available. And when we get to doing that, I can cast read magic on several of us to share the load of such a study. Who knows, maybe we could even turn Sid into a scholar.
Zanderallen (Zachary H) 65/104 AC: 29 T: 13 FF: 28 CMD: 24 Monday September 7th, 2020 1:55:39 PM "I think his conflict with the forest goes way back. Bartomus took his time and pulled out a stack of books he could lug back upwards to the palace. He chose ones that were, according to those that could read and help him, about the Lake and its environs. He also tried to focus on ones with illustrations or maps as that would be of interest to the WBL and would be ones that could be shared.
When they were talking about the poetry and bardic music volumes, he offered "Hey, what if we take back a small group of these and show them to that lady we helped. You know the one with the printing house that was getting taken by the noble book collector? We could make a deal with her - she gets all of these to use for materials, we get 15% royalty on each copy sold? That would be a good thing right? We get gold, she gets materials, also some exposure in the artisan sector of the Float - maybe even a few drinks and some new friends?"
DM Robert - Yes, Kurgan was lonely and crazy, a 1000+ years of lonely pursuit of knowledge does that. Monday September 7th, 2020 8:07:23 PM
Carver takes some loot and muses about the lich's phylactery.
Sid goes looking for secret doors and traps.
Stohp contemplates writing down the titles to every book in the library.
Stock thinks Kurgan was trying to find out why the Crying Wood was the way it was.
Micah thinks that everyone can concentrate on finding the information in the library with a spell or two.
Zanderallen is interested in Kurgan's research, but helps Sid with his searching.
Bartomus thinks he can pick out the choice items quickly, and puts it forth that the bardic section could be given to Barbara Daneel of Rosebud Publishing. _________
Okay in reality it would take you days to go through all the titles in this room just to categorize them into the blurbs I gave you already, to wit: Languages for the books, 50% in Undercommon, 25% in Common, 25% in Draconic. Which was posted last time but apparently everyone missed. Imagine going into a typical bookstore and just trying to determine what each book in the store was about from scanning a title, and/or randomly flicking through it to see what it was about. LOTS of time consumption.
Meta gaming wise, it's actually written into the module, per the powers that be... "B: Locations/Information for PC’s B3 the history of the crying woods - ONLY TO BE REVEALED WITH SEVERAL MONTHS OF STUDY, EITHER BY PC’s OR BY SOMEONE THEY GIVE THE LIBRARY TOO AND CHARGE WITH READING IT."
Okay, back to events. As stated previously, Zanderallen went through the entire dungeon with detect evil on and found nothing. Sid finds no secret doors, rooms, or hidey-holes. He does find some more traps, back in the room you fought the mechanical spider, with the 3 passages. The middle passage was a trap, a-la-Indian Jones and the rolling ball of death, the other passage was filled with poison gas, flammable poison gas.
Kurgan gets away to pop up down the line and give you trouble, or pose you an ethical dilemma because you might have to unite with him to cure the Crying Wood. That's still up in the air, Jerry is sort of against changing a power in the game, but Mike K thinks that would be an ultimate level 20 achievement for your group.
That said, you gather a few books that you think would be worthwhile to study or that might make a good enticement. You've already successfully appraised that there are at least 2 markets, the Sage's guild would take everything. Rosebud publishing would certainly take the bardic stuff. The Star Mage's Guild would probably be interested in the magical esoteric stuff. AND as Bartomus reminded you previously, finders keepers, neither the kobold or the Drow are going to dispute your right to the goods down here.
You have now taken most of the day up in searching through the dungeon and scanning titles and your heads collectively hurt, 'cause reading by candle light is not the greatest, and reading through so many books is certainly not something your characters are used to.

He sounded more optimistic as he walked.

Fully finally convinced that Kurgan is well and truly escaped Zanderallen joins the others in making their way out. With the key to the portal they could reopen the city and let the kobolds return. With the kobolds gone and no more purple worm raiders the drow should be able to return to normal life. They could find libraries for the tomes and get back to the Float. He smiles at the thought of Pepper's face at the Rosebud Publishing house receiving the poetry and bardic tales. "Hopefully we can open up trade for the Float. The retreat of the Crying Woods has led to much re-connecting of old alliances. And I'm sure we will have no trouble finding good homes for the tomes contained here. We'll just have to make sure that whoever we give them to is willing to let us study them and pass on any relevant information. You can throw out my vote as biased but I would love for the bardic tomes, or atleast some of them to end up at the Rosebud."
