In the court of the king

DM Jeremy Battle Map

Osul thanks Tiny and gives him freewill to explore the Wold's Cradle, well at least for the duration the spell. he turns the statue of Rhiaowiok into a mud puddle, and then asks if there are any other loose ends they may need to deal with in the future, but to the best of your DM's knowledge, all unfinished business, other then the planting of the seed, has now been dealt with, for now anyway. Vamir reassures Melzat that he wasn't to blame, and then hooks himself up with some healing. Armand says he was about to turn the statue into something worth commemorating, in stone, but such is life. He suggests taking another reading from the seed compass which is still leading due north. Neshi wonders what may be ahead, but seems to be unable to see through the thick flora. Elyngael opts for a breather. Like Osul she wonders what blast from the past they may have to deal with next, shushing Armand before he can comment.

A day or two after the defeat of Rhiaowiok, the seed’s compass leads you out of the forest, and the Wardens find themselves standing in front of a magnificent palace, with the seed compass pointing strait ahead, right at the palace. The curious thing about the palace is that everyone who looks at it seems to have a completely different idea of what it looks like, but no matter what it looks like to the individual, all agree that it is splendid to behold. The palace doesn’t seem to have any ramparts or any defensive barriers of any kind, just a large courtyard adorned with multiple gardens meant to please the eye. There are a myriad of different fey milling about. There are pixies, nixies, satyr, fauns, dryads, and many others, all of which seem busy doing whatever it is they are supposed to be doing. The fey either don’t seem to notice the Wardens, or simply don’t care about their presence. Finally, after standing around for at least 10 minutes, a middle aged Pixie wearing coke-bottle glasses and a few streaks of grey hair along his temples, flies over to greet the Wardens. He is carrying a clipboard and keeps looking back and forth between the clipboard and the Wardens. Finally he puts down the clipboard and says, in a very matter of fact, and slightly aloof tone, “Who are you? I don’t see your likeness on my list, and so I must conclude that you don’t have an appointment to see the king. The best I can do is put you down for next Tuesday at 10:00. Will that work for you?”

Neshi steps forward, looking at the middle aged pixie.

"Well I just had an informal conversation with him a couple of weeks ago, but we aren't actually here to see him. At least I don't think we are. We have been led here by that seed and it is supposedly leading us to the place where it is supposed to be planted. And well it is pointing right at the palace, so....." Diplomacy DC 20

'Osul tries to recall if and when another Tuesday might happen again.
...ever again.

*Next Tuesday at 10:00... so, after the calamity, then?*, he thinks, amongst other things, like, the palace might simply be in the way, maybe make the appointment, go around, complete the quest, return to the palace, meet the king, seek forgiveness instead of permission, and point out that despite our obviously not being from around here, we had to have our likeness recorded in order to see you sooner, and maybe have saved you from the present calamity.

"Certainly, but just how often do you get visitors who are not fey? While you consider that, may we take a walk around the grounds of the palace?"

The fact that only one fey has paid them any attention has his.

Osul asks for permission to walk around the palace, to which the Pixie answers, rather sharply, "Most defiantly not! The king would have my wings if I allowed such a thing!"

Neshi tries a more diplomatic approach and the pixie seems to let his guard down a bit, as he say, "Well the king did go on walk about not too long ago, so you may have bumped into him, but I haven't heard anything about a seed before, and as much as I'd love to help, my hands are tied, you know rules and all."

Vamir reminisces as he sees the beauty of the gardens.

Elyngael wonders why ever ones view of the palace is different, and tries to see through any illusions. She isn't able to see through any illusions, and the pixie tries to explain, "The king knows that every one's idea of beauty is different, and he wants everyone to enjoy the view of his palace as much as he does, so he imbued the building itself with magic that causes the building to actually look the way the viewer is most inclined to enjoy. How it works is as much a mystery to me as it is to you, but it isn't an illusion."

Armand takes the time to introduce himself and the rest of the Wardens, and gives more detail as to what their current mission is.

As Armand introduces the Wardens, the pixie begins to look the individuals over, in an almost scrutinizing way. Then as if he is thinking out loud and going over some sort of check list,he says under his breath, "A wemic, two elves, and three humans. one of the humans wears the symbol of Gargul, the wemic wears dragon scale gauntlets, one of the elves carries a bow and has a wolf companion, the other has a plant companion resembling a weeping willow. Finally seemingly satisfied with his observations, a broad smile crosses th pixie's face as he says, "Well that changes everything, the king always entertains heroic adventures, you will dine with him tonight! My name is Alfreda, follow me."

Alfreda leads the Wardens into the palace, down several hallways, and up a few flights of steps, until they enter what Alfreda calls the guest wing. There are many doors lining the excessively long hallway, and Alfreda escorts each or the Wardens to their own separate room. The rooms are large, with lavish beds and decor. Each room has a steamy bath prepared, and is furnished with the perfectly sized furnishings and baths, to make the occupants comfortable. Alfreda opens another room, and it is a sitting room, with comfortable looking chairs around a grand open hearth fireplace, with a sizable drink cabinet. Alfreda says, “A fire can be lit if you so desire, either way, this room is at your disposal, if you desire fellowship before dinner, or before turning in for the night. The bar is well stocked, I’m sure you will find whatever it is you desire there. Feel free to help yourselves, dinner will be in about 2 hours, I will return and meet you in the sitting room to escort you to the dinning hall, and the king will see you then.”

Neshi is in like the cat who got the canary, (get it liontaur, cat, LOL. Sorry couldn't help myself) as he awaits the time to meet his patron again.

Armand takes a bath and then dons his finest duds.

Osul thanks Alfreda but explains he was referring to taking a wide path around the palace. Alfreda smiles and says, "I'm sure the king will be of great help to you, he is the king after all, and besides, he has given strict orders that any heroic adventure group that makes their way to the Cradle, and his palace must dine at his table, so you see my wings are tied, besides, I'm sure you will enjoy your stay, the king built this palace to be enjoyed, after all." He bathes himself and his clothes, then turns into a fire elemental to dry out his clothes. He looks out the window of his room and sees the direction from which the Wardens came. the view is breath taking to say the least. The window from the sitting room happens to be on the opposite side of the hall, and it overlooks a lovely courtyard, in the center of the palace. It seems a quiet place, perfect for prayer and meditation, or enjoying a good book. He can't really see what is inside the other parts of the palace, as the curtains all seem to be drawn. (Alfreda said that the palace magic wasn't an illusion, but somehow you are actually seeing the palace itself, just your interpretation of what a beautiful palace looks like) Osul doesn't see anything that would lead him to believe that trouble is a foot, nor does he feel resistance to any magics of any kind. Since Osul's airwalk lasts 140 min, he would have approximately 20 min left, assuming Alfreda is punctual.

Owen ponders the mystery of the palace's magic as he takes a long bath. If he were to cast detect magic on the place it would radiate an oppressively strong, almost over powering, magical aura, but he wouldn't detect any recognizable school. He vaguely recalls reading about similar magics in the past, but they were always on a scale beyond the scope of mortals.

Vamir cleans himself and his clothes. when he is reunited with his friends, he asks how one greets a king.

Vamir and the rest of the Wardens hear a very shy answer coming from the bar, where they see an small sized creature with yellow skin, bulging white eyes, and gangly limbs serving as bartender. (a DR 13 knowledge nature identifies him as a pech) The unassuming and obviously shy fey is dresses in a white shirt with a black vest, bow tie, and trousers. a closer look revels that the small sized fey is standing on a step stool, so he can serve at the medium sized bar. the pech answers, "Well, um, the king is um, really nice you see, and um, well, um just be yourselves, and um, I think you'll do OK. Um, I'm sorry, My name is Prisly, and I was asked to serve you at the, um, bar here, I can leave, if, um, you wish to be private."

Armand, Vamir, and Elyngael are disinclined to partake of a pre-dinner cocktail, but Osul, Neshi, and Owen are all in asking Prisly to, as Owen put it, "surprise them". Before he starts mixing their drinks he attempts to answer Osul's question, and in so doing, he becomes even more shy and maybe even a bit embarrassed. He says "Well you see sir, Um, I've, well, um, never been much good at mining", as he drops his head in shame. He looks up then quickly and exuberantly adds, "I tried real hard though!", but then his head drops again as he says, "But, um, well ya see, I just couldn't stop making mistakes." He looks up again, this time with a little twinkle in his bulging white eyes, and joy in his voice, "But then the king heard of my plight and he asked me to come and work at his palace, and it turns out I have a knack for mixing drinks!"

As Elyngael asks Vamir about Melzat's growth spurt, Prisly goes to work mixing drinks for Owen, Osul, and Neshi. The pech thinks for a moment, then says as if thinking out loud, "I wish I knew what Chef was preparing, that would making paring the cocktail easier.". Then a look of inspiration crosses his face as goes to work in earnest. The fey puts on quite a show as he twirls glasses and flips shakers, adding some of this and some of that. Finally he slides three glasses filled with a dark red concoction, down the bar, where they stop perfectly in front of the intended customer. With a broad smile the pech explains that he started with a spirit distilled from a berry called a haloberry, that only grows on certain mountains in the Cradle. He goes on to say that he added some bitters made from the root of the cinnadrome tree, which grows in the Cradle's temprate rain forest, and the juice of a fresh squeezed dragon orange, an orange native to the Cradle, that resembles a blood orange. for a garnish he added a fresh haloberry which looks like a bright red grape, about an inch and a half in diameter, with a ring protruding around the middle. The drink is both sweet and dry at the same time, with fruity notes, but the fruits are like nothing you've ever tasted, and don't over power the balance of the drink. In short it is one of the finest cocktails you've ever tasted. The haloberry garnish, if eaten tastes like a cross between a raspberry, strawberry and blueberry.

DM Jeremy Battle Map
Wednesday September 16th, 2020 6:13:56 AM

OOC... Allow me to answer the question about how Melzat is the same level as Vamir. at 1st level, Bloodwitches get to choose between a magical cauldron or an intelligent animal companion, which they call a witches familiar. (BTW witches familiars have an int of 8 and can speak one language, which is why Melzat has the gift of speech) Greenmages gain a plant companion at level 5 which shares the Greenmages level, and as per the write up stacks with any animal companion levels gained from another class.

Wade originally took the cauldron, but after playing for awhile, and especially after we lost Atlas, He decided he wanted Melzat to be able to take on a more front line role, so we did some minor PC surgery, and merged Melzat with the cauldron, effectively exchanging the cauldron for a witches familiar, so that the companion levels, int, and gift of speech could stack.

Armand does some journaling, as the Vamir explains the circumstances that lead up to Melzat's transformation. Elyngael wonders if Vamir will be able to scry anymore after the loss of his cauldron. Neshi, Osul, and Owen each take the time to praise Prisly for his amazing skills as a mixologist, with Osul suggesting he name the drink he created. The pech is beaming with delight at the compliments, but his bashfulness gets the better of him, and all he can say is a shy, "I'm glad you liked it."

At that moment, Afreda returns, promptly at the 2 hour mark, and leads them through the palace to the dinning hall. The dining hall is magnificently adorned in living decor. Instead of wall hangings, there are what appears to be multiple varieties of ivy completely covering the walls. These ivies are not like anything you have seen before, as some have golden leaves, and some have silver leaves. There are also leaves in vibrant shades of red, blue, purple, and of course green. The room is furnished with 2 long gilded tables extending the length of the hall and one shorter table, of the same gilded design, at the head of the room, opposite the elaborate carved double door that opens into the room. Seated at the long tables are a myriad of fey, some of which you remember from your arrival, but there seems to be many more than you saw milling about the courtyard earlier. Sitting in the center of the smaller table is the king himself, who everyone immediately recognizes him as, none other than, Eberyon, king of the fey! Alfreda leads the Wardens to the head table, bows before the immortal power, and says, "Your majesty, may I present the Wardens of the Tree of Parting!"

Everyone shows due respect to the King of the Fey. Elyngael wonders if her people are beholden to Eberyon, but elves are no more beholden to him then any other god or power. If anything, he is beholden to them, since it was the elves that decided to wake him from his long slumber. Vamir wonders if he could take any cuttings from the amazing ivies, and realizes that though they wouldn't grow to the magnitude and splendor you see here, back in the Wold they may make an unusual and lovely small house plant, as well as living reminder of ones time spent in the Wold's Cradle. Armand remembers that Eberyon prefers an honest and strait forward form of discourse. He also knows that since his reform, he finds pleasure in helping the noble races, and in particular, heroes. As such, he shares the Warden's quest with the king of the Fey.

"Intrusion? Nonsense! All Heroes of the Wold are welcome in my home and at my board. Please rise my friends, and thank you Alfreda, you may take your seat if you desire" Alfreda thanks his king, stands erect, and then flies over to an empty chair, at one of the two long tables. Sitting next to him is Prisly, and a male Faun wearing a chef's hat. Seeing that gives the impression that even the servants of the court are welcome at Eberyon's table , and after a quick examination, you see that many of the assembled fey are wearing in fact various occupational uniforms.

Eberyon says, "Let us talk more about your quest, after we sup, for my people are assembled, the food is hot, and I'm sure you hunger". "Please join me at my table!", he says indicating the head table, offering the seats on either side of him to the Wardens, and to Vamir and Elyngael he says, "Your heroic companions are welcome as well", and then he whispers, with a chuckle, in Vamir's ear, "My wife wasn't very pleased with you, when you left her patronage, but worry not, she has gotten over the loss, and has even mentioned to me that the Crones of the South was probably a better fit for you anyway."

After the Wardens have taken their seats, Eberyon stands to address his people. "Tonight we are blessed to share our hall with the Wardens of the Tree of Parting, and so tonight we dine in their honor!" Turning to the faun in the chef's hat, Eberyon asks, "Is the meal ready? "Yes your highness!" the faun answers, then with a clap of his hands, the faun shouts out, "Bring in the food, our king and his guests hunger!"

No sooner did the faun sit down, and a side door opened, allowing a train of servants to enter, each carrying a platter of something tasty. There is a variety of succulent meats, as well as many fruits you have never seen before, each as tasty as the next. There is also amazing, fresh from the oven bread, served with fresh churned butter and honey, as well as a variety of vegetables, each cooked to perfection. As soon as the servants set down their platters they also found seats at the table. Eberyon turns to the Wardens and says, "We have but two rules as we dine in my hall, and that is eat your fill, and enjoy yourself. Don't worry, your quest can wait until after we've supped."

The Wardens take there seats, and Vamir assures Eberyon that he meant no disrespect to Queen Maab and still holds her in the highest of regards. He even asks that the king sends his regards to his queen. Eberyon lets out a mighty roar of a laugh, and slaps the elf on the back in a friendly matter then says, "I will do that my friend!" Owen shares stories of the Wardens adventures, and in return, the fey share stories about life in the Cradle. Elyngael observes that the fey in this room all seem to get along well with no obvious clicks to be seen. She is pretty sure though it's because this particular group of fey spend much of their time together working in the palace, and not because there is harmony among the fey races. When Neshi presents himself before the king, Eberyon say, "Well met again, my friend I hope that your gift is serving you well?" When Neshi and Armand bring up Rhiaowiok, Eberyon says, "It should be no surprise to discover a tunche, one of my fey creations here in the Wold's Cradle, but that particular rascal, has been a rebellious lot for a while now. It surprises me not that he would attack you, and I assume blame you for his forceful return, to the Cradle, at Spaz's hand. He got what he was owed, and nothing else. Eberyon thanks Osul as he hands him the seed. "Interesting", he says, as for some reason everyone is able to see the seed compass. Whether it's Eberyon's power, or the will of the seed is unclear, but each of the Wardens see the seed compass at the same time, and the compass points towards the north window. Elyngael gets up to look out the window, and is met there by Eberyon, who invites the rest to join them. As the Wardens look out the window, though it's dark, they see a torch lit, grand European style garden, the kind seen in all the Victorian era movie. In the center of the garden there is something that seems out of place, a dead tree. From your distance you can tell that said tree, when alive, is a dead ringer to the tree engraved on the signet emeralds you found in the dragon's lair, and now wear as en emblem of your position as Tree Wardens. This tree is no where near the size of Deeproot, closer to the size of a normal full grown oak, but it does resemble the Tree of Parting a little, hence the assumption that the signet emeralds carried the image of Deeproot, but now you are certain that the image is this now dead tree. Eberyon says, "I have a hypothesis, would you like to test it out with me?"

There isn't a maze, the garden is a huge affair with a winding cobblestone pathway, with many forks and side paths, leading through it. One could easily walk right to the dead tree via the winding path. There are everburning torches placed at key intervals to illuminate and spotlight some of the key features through out the garden, whether they be marble statues, or living plant sculptures. The dining hall is on the main floor.

"I believe I know where Deeproot's daughter wishes to be planted, follow me", Eberyon says as he leads the Wardens out of the dinning hall down a few hallways and out the back door overlooking the garden. The garden is even more spectacular close up with flora of every shape size and color imaginable. Some are familiar while others look like something straight out of a fairy tale. As you wind through the garden, the seed compass seems to be pointing directly towards the dead tree, and when you arrive at the base of the tree, the indicator on the compass begins to flash, then the image disappears. "It seems my hypothesis was correct, and the seed wishes to be planted here.", Eberyon begins. "Allow me to introduce Guyrent, or her remains anyway." "She was a good friend of mine for many years, until about 10 years ago when she began to slowly fade away, as trees do when they reach the end of their natural life." "I met her hundreds of years ago while walking in the Wold, and was attracted to her quick wit, and feisty attitude, so I brought her to the Cradle with me and planted her in the center of this garden." "I could have given her immortality, and even offered it to her, but she didn't want it so I respected her wishes and allowed her to live her life and I allowed her to die," "I haven't had the heart to remove her remains from the garden, and so here she stands." "However if Deeproot"s daughter wishes to be planted here, Who am I to disallow such a thing?" "Let us adjourn for the evening, and we'll talk more in the morning." "There is much to discuss, I have much to ponder, and I don't wish to exhaust you."

Eberyon leads you out of the garden and back into the palace, where Alfreda is waiting to guide you back to your private chambers. When you arrive, a fire is burning in the sitting room's fireplace, and Prisly is there heating a poker in the fire. "Might I interest you in a Hot Toddy as a night cap?" the pech asks.

Armand (Robert D)AC 26/touch 11/flat 26 HP 104/104 CMD 23 Character Sheet

Armand declines the night cap. When they are alone back in the common room he replies to Vamir. "I agree. This hardly seems worth our time. There's got to be something we are missing. I mean Eberyon is a god and this is his domain. His power is pretty much unlimited. The only thing I can think of is that he's going to want some sort of favor or quest from us before he will plant the nut."

'Osul accepts the seed from Eberyon and Prisly's offer of a drink with thanks. He takes a seat with the group and sips and thinks.

When Prisly leaves and the conversation starts the sipping and thinking continues. Eventualy he speaks up, saying, "The original message came to us in Sylvan. The majority of people dealing with fey would hope they spoke common, and those of us who understand Sylvan are surely the majority of the people of The Tree who would. Deeproot trusts us, just as Torm told us long ago when he brought us the apling and seed, and Deeproot would have shared that with Longbranch, which explains his reaction when we identified ourselves. Had someone else such as the guards happened along who spoke the language then they would either have been asked to get us specifically, or they would have arrived here, potentially identified themselves to Rhiaowiok as being from The Tree, likely being killed (and not quickly) and either losing the seed entirely or losing it to Rhiaowiok. I know we are the right people, and yes, it only takes a gardener to plant the seed, but that is the destination, not the journey."

He looks about for other's ideas and responses.

Elyngael politely declines the nightcap instead she prefers to remain in the garden. "Eberyon you have been a most generous host, but I have not had time to properly explore your gardens. It is too lovely out here to be shut inside. I will not be exhausted, as I am quite content to sleep here with Nature surrounding me," She smiles at Eberyon and sits down cross-legged in the grass.

Owen Marcellus (Weston W.) AC: 18/14/14; HP: 49/101; CMD: 20

Owen responds to Armand. "Armand, friend, have we grown so used to fighting dragons and liches that planting a wondrous, sentient tree in the Wold's Cradle and sharing a table with King Eberyon is run of the mill? This is a story I look forward to telling Simon, and any grandchildren I have when I grow old. Let's enjoy this journey instead of speculating about the good King's motives."
