Emrys is satisfied with how the massacre had turned out. However he doesn't think it's quite over. This was only the welcome wagon. "Thanks Tishe, survival is a great motivator." Although he is becoming concerned with how easily or possible it will be to replenish their spells. Does he sense woldsblood in this place ... too early to tell? This may require another Miracle.. who knows.

Tishe’ watches for another wave.

Lanliss and Barratore totally destroy the remaining wolf.

Velarin keeps an alert ear open for other belligerents.

Edson keeps a watchful eye out for attackers.

As the last wolf falls, to no one’s real surprise a flurry of motion disturbs the fog as wolves, this time of a more normal size, lunge in.

Twenty small wolves, the same color as the fog they attack from, rush the heroes. They appear to be aware of the antilife shell as not a single one attempts to attack those within it.

Knowledge Arcana DC 25 Highlight to display spoiler: { These are mist wolves. They are magical beasts that are naturally attuned to misty locales. They have low light, darkvision and scent. When they bite they latch on with their mighty jaws, effectively doing bite damage each round. They are resistant to most physical attacks except those made by silvered weapons. The pelts of these creatures are highly prized as they have a non-magical property that provides improved stealth, especially in fog like conditions. Each can be fashioned into a non-magical cloak that grants a +5 competence bonus on stealth, +10 in mist. So fashioned, they are worth 20,000 gp each. One hide is needed for a small creature; two for a medium creature. }

I apologize for the confusion caused by my description of the trip attacks made by the large wolves, making some think they were being grappled. Note, however, that for these small wolves, their special attack upon a successful bite IS a grapple. Of those outside the bubble, I have Barratore with FoM, but not Lanliss or Edson. Let me know if I missed it--DM John.

Lanliss screams as some wolves manage to take a hold off him, the pain was distracting to him, especially considering that they tore his flesh a bit and their fangs were spot-on on him not letting him escape or fight properly.

Another onslaught of wolves and as they come in, Barratore strikes at the first 6, connecting with 5 of them

"MIST WOLVES!! If you have silver weapons, better use it! They are resistant to non-silver weapons, cold and sonic attacks!"

With the three warriors taking so much damage, there is only one possible action for Emrys at the moment. He begins to speak familiar words of power.

(Emrys casts Mass Heal. Everyone receives 250 points of healing, among other things.)

As everyone heals up completely, he knows this will only help poor Edson for a few seconds before he's ripped to shreds again. So his next act will be a bit controversial, but his friends are warded against Fear for the time being. He quickly casts a second spell in a desperate act of removing the wolves surrounding Edson. "Velarin, can you step aside to avoid my spell. I can't move or the Antilife Shell will dispel." Emrys doesn't wait too long...

(Emrys casts a Quickened Fear Spell (quicken metamagic spell), in the direction of the wolves surrounding Edson. Range: 30 foot, cone-shaped burst. Duration: 19 rounds. Will Save: 28. If Velarin doesn't step aside, both Velarin and Edson receive a +4 morale bonus to their save due to the Remove Fear spell that's already cast upon them. If they fail the save, the Fear Effect will be suppressed for the next 10 minutes. If the Wolves fail their save, they receive the Panicked condition for 19 rounds. If the wolves save successfully, they're Shaken for 1 round.)

V is about to tell everyone what they are when Emrys beats him to it, but does chime in "They are also immune to poison. Not that we generally use poison."

Quickly assessing the Keepers positions, V realizes that Lanliss has Barratore nearby, but Edson is on an island at the moment, So V casts an empowered chain lightning at W1, which should effect it, and every wolf within 30' of him. (Primary target 97 damage, reflex save of 29 for 1/2)( Secondary targets 88 damage, reflex save of 27 for 1/2)

Another wave of wolves arrive, smaller but just as vicious, and Tishe’ berates herself that she didn’t actually have anything ready! “Well, let’s see what I can weave”, she mutters and with a thought, pulls the perfect scroll from her Pants O Plenty. Quickly reading, she casts a Web spell targeted at point Q,R,17,18 and anchored at tree Q13 and Q22.

Instantly, all the wolves attacking Edson are fighting sticky, icky webs! Even better, Edson and his Freedom of Movement is completely unaffected!

Lanliss screams as the wave of smaller wolves nearly overpowers him.

Barratore lays into the wolves swarming him, wounding several. He then reaches over to assist Lanliss, killing one (W10) with a vicious series of three blows, and seriously wounding another (W11).

Emrys Heals everyone. He starts to cast fear on the wolves surrounding Edson, but realizes at the last moment that his remove fear might not protect elf from the new fear effect.

Velarin brings out the lightning on the wolves around Edson. This affects wolves 1-9 and 17-20. Wolves 1, 4, 6, 8, 17, & 20 fail their saves. Not sure why primary takes more damage

Tishe’ casts web on the wolves around Edson. They all save, but are now in difficult terrain.

Edson, having been healed by Emrys, plays dead.

The Wolves.
The wolves around Edson have had enough of the spells. Wolves 2 and 3 grab their presumed downed prey and drag him away from the others towards the bottom of the map. The other wolves in that theater (1, 4-7, 19, & 20) Slink away with them. They both save against the web, but are hindered by it and their load so only drag the unconscious feigning Edson twenty feet.

Wolf 8 withdraws.
Wolf 9 attacks Lanliss. Hit with a 36 for 28 points of damage, but cannot grab with its jaws.
Wolf 10 dies.
Wolf 11 withdraws.
Wolf 12 attacks the bigger threat, Barratore, flanking with W16. Due to the flank hits with a 40 for 23 points of damage.
Wolf 13 attacks Barratore and misses.

Emrys exclaims, "I'm really beginning to think that Death has its heart set on Edson!"

He wish he had line of sight, so he could command those mist mutts to drag Edson back.

Emrys decides that if he can't target the wolves dragging Edson, he can at least impede their progress. He then summons a great wall of a thick, twisting bramble of thorns.

(Emrys casts Wall of Thorns. Range: Medium. Effect: Nineteen 10' Cubes. Duration: 190 minutes. This wall will run parallel with the road and placed just beyond the wolves progress. I'm attempting to block their escape.)

(ooc: I gave The primary target the extra 9 points of damage from the intense spell that is a class feature of the invoker. If you would like to split it up a different way, feel free, or let me know. The feature doesn't specify how to split it up among multiple targets)

"I think I got Edson. If the first blast didn't kill them, the second should. Keep an eye on what's going on with Lanliss and Barratore."

V fires another empowered chain lightning at the mass of wolves he targeted before, attempting to get as many as possible around Edson. Damage of 118 to the primary, reflex save 29 for 1/2 damage, and 109 to the secondary, reflex save of 27 for 1/2 damage.

Edson continues to play dead and the wolves appear to fall for it.

Lanliss attacks wolf 9 hitting it twice.
Emrys attempts to blocks the wolves dragging off Edson with a wall of thorns.
Note that the map does not show the full extent of the thorns, only the relevant squares.

Velarin blasts the wolves near Edson, one caught in the web and two attempting to drag off Edson, killing the one in the web and one of those on Edson and seriously wounding the remaining wolf on Edson. Thanks for the explanation about the primary. Note that the extra damage made no change in the outcome last round.

Tishe’ throws three scorching rays at wolf 9, but none hit their target. Touch AC of the mist wolves is 21 Then she moves out of the antilife shell and casts a lightning bolt down the line of wolves. All manage to save, but still take half damage.

Barratore is overwhelmed by wolves.

Velarin attacks wolf 9 with two volleys of magic missiles, slaying it.

Barratore attacks the wolves surrounding him. He kills the one who last bit him (w13), then he lands a critical hit, killing W16. He misses with two more swings before connecting with W15, seriously, but not fatally wounding it.

Edson does a fine job of playing dead and finds he no longer has any living wolves around him.

Tishe’ blasts a bolt through the line of wolves, slaying one and wounding the remaining two. No need to use a heropoint. The wolf threatening Tishe’ was slain by Velarin’s magic missiles.

Lanliss cuts into the wolf between him and Barratorre. Already wounded by Tishe’s bolts, he finishes it off with his second stab.

Emrys, seeing the battle is about over, keeps watch.

Barratore attempts to remain alert for anything else that might coming in, but as happy as he is that Edson is ok, the fighter does not want to tarry here. Emrys' spell was keeping the soul stealing fear at bay for now, but it would be gone all too soon. Once that happened, the group would be so much more vulnerable.

"We need to be pushing on, quickly. Until we reach the Inn, however we are going to do that, we are in great danger."

Each can be fashioned into a non-magical cloak that grants a +5 competence bonus on stealth, +10 in mist. So fashioned, they are worth 20,000 gp each. One hide is needed for a small creature; two for a medium creature.)

Tishe’ runs over to Edson's aid, noting that, except for some torn clothing and significant saliva stains, he is unharmed. note that since Emrys’ heal spell in round 9, the wolves have been treating Edson as groceries rather than foe.

Velarin rushes to Edson’s aid as well.

Edson realizes the wolves were targeting him by scent. To help this busy DM, in the future, please note when Edson is invisible in your status. Thanx.

Barratore takes a parting swing at the retreating wolf, wounding it seriously. It howls in pain and rushes off into the fog. He then warns the other of the need to keep moving and puts words into action.

Emrys describes the value of the pelts to the others.

Lanliss is relieved.


Except for those that hurried off in defeat, the wolves, both the larger ones that attacked first and the smaller ones that followed, lie motionless on the ground around you. The carcasses of the larger wolves seem ordinary enough, but the pelts of smaller creatures are noteworthy, as Emrys explained. In all, nine mist wolf pelts can be recovered.

Imperceptibly at first, but once noticed, it is apparent that the fog is unmistakably dissipating. Soon, only wispy patches of fog dot the forest floor. The adventures now have a clear view of their surroundings for the first time since they passed through the gate. The trees, formerly mere dark shadowy shapes in the gloom, are now clearly discernible. They no longer seem as mysterious and foreboding in the thinning mist, now appearing to be merely very large, very old trees. A leafy ground cover can now be seen to be blanketing the forest floor around the massive trunks. It is of a type unfamiliar to any of the travelers. Emrys, Edson, and Tishe', all of whom are standing in it, find it to be there thick and cushiony. It appears similar to common ivy, except the leaves are of mixed size and shape and clustered in groups of four, six, and seven leaves. Its leaves are leathered and a pale yellowish green in color. The soil here smell musty and damp.

The road itself has also transformed. Previously, it appeared to be constructed of smooth, dark stones, but now it appears to be made of nothing more than hard packed dirt. It meanders ahead through the trees, disappearing from view around a bend. The light beyond that point appears greater, indicating a possible clearing.

Here in the heavy woods it is difficult for anyone to see much beyond the curve in the road. The canopy, high above, obscures any view of the sky. Based on the lighting level it appears to be near sunset or, perhaps right after sunrise. It is impossible to tell, here on this different plane, where the travelers have no reference point for time.

What do the Keepers do after reclaiming the wolf pelts: rest here, move on, or something else?

Emrys takes a moment to survey all the blood and gore around him ... by almost 30 mutilated corpses ... not to mention the loss of blood and flesh left behind by survivors that limped away leaving trails of bloodshed in every direction ... on a not so lonely path through an unknown wood! After taking a mental, deep breath from that run-on thought, he says, "We need to move away from this place immediately ... we are standing in middle of one big bloody 'Hello, We Are Right Here'!!"

"If we don't wish to turn into mist ourselves and Wind Walk, I suggest we activate our feet and remove ourselves from this massive bloodstain! All trails lead to us right now!"

Tishe’ smiles her thanks at Edson for the compliment. “And by ‘we’, I mean you, sweetie: I couldn’t bluff my way out of a slug pen.” The sorceress also beams her thanks at Emrys. “Many Shadows, sweetie, makes me feel shuttlecocked and ready for action!”

Tishe’ doesn’t want to stop at the misty woody place where they were ambushed by two hordes of wolves. Besides, “We need to weave on. The longer we stay here the better chance Someone will notice our presence.”

"Wind walk would be quite helpful to get a move on, but the time it takes to reform could leave us at a significant disadvantage if we encounter a problem. I do agree with Emrys that we should get a move on."

As soon as tishe' is done collecting the pelts, V falls in line behind Barratore, who leads the way down the path.

Barratore will assist on the pelt gathering, whether it is dumping wolves into a portable hole or if some skinning has to be done

Emrys's healing is welcome as always and he provides a quick 'Thanks' to the Bloodwitch and he fully agrees with everyone else who were agreeing to his earlier suggestion of moving on.

Barratore takes the lead and shifts the Glammer on the Animated shield to appear as a banner of the WLA You never knew.

Lanliss awaits the others. Yes, Lanliss knows about the pelts and what can be made of them.

Emrys advises distancing themselves from the site of the recent carnage. He then heals everyone’s wounds.

Tishe’ concurs with the need to move on.

Velarin endorses traveling by foot and prepares to depart once the pelts are dealt with. Reviewing what he knows about planes and their implications on casting magnificent mansion, he concludes that it is likely to function normally in Koshe Marr.

Edson asks about continuing to be tethered and prepares to depart.

Barratore assists with the pelts and leads the marches forward, banner flying.
Pardon my ignorance: what does “you never knew” mean?


As the Keepers follow they bend in the road, they see that, in fact, there is a bit of break in the trees. An outcropping of broken rock about 50 feet wide and stretching ahead about 100 yards. The limited soil in this area is obviously incapable of supporting the grand trees they just stepped out of. A few scraggly specimens dot the open terrain and the road, more of a dirt track here, continues on into the trees on the other side of the clearing.

The sky that is now visible once in the glade is filled with rolling clouds. The sun, if there is in fact one on this plane, is hidden from view, but the clouds ahead appear to be brighter right above the trees on the other side of the opening.

As the adventures enter the glade, low rumbling thunder periodically sounds in the distance, but with no indication of any rain. Off to the left from the top of the trees., a lone animal cries out briefly. The unfamiliar sounding call sounds like a cross between a raven’s caw and an eagle’s challenge. It echoes through the tree tops, but does not repeat.

A slight breeze comes from ahead, carrying with it the faint smell of wood smoke.

The terrain rises gently ahead but the layout of the land is obscured by the surrounding trees. The road, however, clearly continues through the forest on the other side of the glade.

"I didn't hear anything Lanliss. This clearing would be a Good spot for a trap though. Anybody have any ideas besides just wandering in? We could go airborne? it is less likely that there would be flying threats in trees such as these, but with the dense canopy, we may have trouble getting through it, unless we go over it"

Edson looks back and forth but doesn't hear the sounds the others are talking about. "What? " he asks. "What sounds? this place is really messing with us. You hear noises, I don't. None of this makes sense and seems to just keep you on the edge. Thats probably a defensive tactic, keep you on edge and it makes you make mistakes."

Barratore looks about the clearing, V was right, it was a nice place for a trap, but everything doesn't have to be. You never know. Maybe the next creatures they run into would recognized the High Woldian script upon his banner shield, designating the group as on the side of good, WLA.

The fighter puts aside such fairy tales and focuses on the conversation. "Metal on metal and the smell of smoke? Says blacksmith r some other residence ahead. As likely as V is right, because, you know, life. I think we simply continue."

With that Barratore will move into the glade and towards the road on the far side
