Kezzem tries to test the moonlings' obedience, but Bliss won't let him be mean about it. You do soon see that the moonlings must obey any order they're given. They don't seem to mind.
Mooncalf gives it some thought, then agrees to come and be a part of Bliss and Pressi's coven.
Pressi is able to recruit Raqi.
Some of you are interested in perhaps returning, and your DM has no objection to having "offstage" excursions here, but there will be no more adventures here.
When you are ready, you thank Kerra for her hospitality. Succotash asks to be returned near the kobold village, to save on travel time. You stand together in the courtyard, and see it, and the moon palace, dissolve away. You are standing in the jungle. You'd forgotten how hot and humid it was! The heat, and the smell of growing things, hit you like a wave.

She takes some time to welcome Mooncalf and Raqi to earth before turning her attention back towards the village.
At Kobold Village, Bliss leads the group to speak with Auntie when she is free, and tells the story of what the party found.
He mentions that the traps and golems are still active at the temple, and the party will have to find permanent solutions, likely involving disarming the traps and destroying the golems.
He tells Auntie of his dream of setting up trade among the Humbles Ford residents, the kobolds here, and the people on the moon.

Monday's missing post for Murphy I have detailed the procedure and mechanisms in writing, but shall keep the results herein brief. On the 5th day of Succotash's studies, Murphy traveled for a few hours to the Sanctuary of Humble's Sword. Deep under the large stone structure in the middle of it Murphy created a 10'(long)x5'x5' stone basin and watertight cover to store 240 gallons of the effervescent water from the moon lake. An additional 40 gallons he delivered to caretakers Hazel and Alouryn, with instructions. On the way back, he brings more soil for the corridors.
He has gathered various samples of moonlife, and yes, he did get a few moon rocks - just ones that looked interesting at the time. Maybe a bucketful total.
The druid takes time to give his farewells to the farming contingent of the formians, to pay his respects to Queen Hrakikh. "May you and yours do well here, and live well with those above. If you will allow it, I should be pleased to visit from time to time to see how goes the farming." He also thanks Scax for accompanying them during some of their time here, and gives him three acorns, and a signal whistle. "The acorn is one of the symbols of who I am, as a druid. An acorn is small. But, it can grow into a mighty oak tree. I planted one in a corridor," and he tells the location. "It is now only a sapling, and should be re-planted above ground, near water. You can see one by the lake. You are a people, in this area, now small in number. But, as the oak tree grows large, at one point its growth slows, yet from it come more oak trees, some near the one oak, some far away. May you find places for your people to grow well, but also know when and how to expand. I think you already know this. Peace to you, and among our people." He takes out the whistle. He blows it, gently at first. "We use it to signal. Now, beware your hearing, for I shall blow it loud." He does so, but only for two seconds. "The sound travels far. Farewell, Scax."
Once Succotash concludes their studies, and the team is ready to leave, he makes certain that Tali, however she may be feeling now, accompanies them.
He does see if they can enjoy one more meal with Kerra and the moonlings. He lets her know he planted 3 oaks in the closest forest, and gives their location. "If you think that may be a problem, feel free to uproot them - maybe plant elsewhere?" He is anxious to learn whether Mooncalf will be joining them, and is then pleased the moonling has decided to do so. And formian Raki!

Murphy's Tuesday post Murphy is happy to be with his friends - and their new companions - back on Woldian ground again.
"'Forcing a vacation spot'?" he asks Pressi. "What made you think that? You know for years I have dreamt of traveling to the moons. You think when we get there, I'm going to be satisfied with not looking around a bit? Looking and learning a vacation? Ha! I try to do that everyday!"
"So, the K'tthhykk tribe called Sskurhe lies yonder," Murphy points in the right direction. "On planet Wold."
He enjoys teasing Pressi.

Before you leave the palace, Kerra gives you a code phrase to deactivate the golems at the jungle temple. Between it and the key that turns the traps on and off, you should be able to access the temple safely. Although, you know, there's still stuff out in the jungle that might try to eat you. But other than that.
In the jungle, you find yourselves farther from the kobold village than you were anticipating; Kerra doesn't know the area well. But you are able to reach the village by late afternoon. The kobolds are excited for your return; they greet you and call out questions in Draconic and broken Common.
You return the talisman to Auntie, who is overjoyed to receive it. The kobolds extend their thanks, and the hospitality of the village, but have no more substantial reward to offer. They are pleased to hear that you got some treasure at the temple, and have no objection to your keeping it as a reward.
Tali has accompanied you back, and goes to lie down for a bit, still feeling unwell. When the time comes, however, she can teleport you back to Humble's Ford. Of course, you have horses and wagons and stuff, so you may want to make the journey overland. It's up to you.

For now, Pressi notes a couple of things. First, she is once again the only woman. Second, it is good to be back home before she called anyone Dweezel or Moon Unit. Third, it's always been weird how SHE is the one with the feet planted on the ground instead of Murphy.
And fourth, Pressi doesn't have any strong feelings in regards of teleportation vs walking.
Bliss mentions to Auntie that he wants to have friendship among their peoples, and he asks if she would recommend anyone from her tribe to join his coven. Especially anyone who can play a lyre or a viol or a gitar! If so, he'll offer an invite.
Later, to his fellow heroes, he urges a slow walk home. "We have our new friends here to protect," Bliss explains. "And there are lots of scary beasties in this jungle. We should wander around and roust out the most dangerous. We need this to be a safer place."

Murphy has about 30 gallons of effervescent lake water in a barrel. He lets each tribe member have a cup to drink. "Water of Kerracles," he tells them. He thanks Auntie, the chief, and others with whom they have interacted for their kindnesses and hospitality. "May this talisman bring you blessings."
When it is time to leave, Murphy agrees with Bliss. "Yes, walk and roust. Roust and walk. I love these Cthonian jungles."
He works on finishing the carving of the masterwork slingstaff he bought from the Catacombs just before they left Humble's Ford as a group. One day out, he is able to cast changestaff into it.

Succotash is ready to depart. He is sad that Tali won't be joining them on the road home, or any other adventures for that matter, but he understands her need to rest and recover. The cleric would prefer to teleport the whole menagerie home, but fears it would be to much of a tax on Tali's poor health, as it would take multiple trips, and he is only good for one round trip himself. As such he votes in favor of legging it home.

"You're a woman, Press?" says Kezzem when she comments about being the only woman in the group. "I thought you were just...you know...a Pressi."
"Wait, what about Valerie?"
DM Kathy Thursday September 17th, 2020 4:08:24 PM Murphy distributes drinks of moon water to the kobolds. Most of them take some to be polite, and their reaction is difficult to read. They do seem to appreciate the gesture, though.
Bliss asks Auntie for recommendations of promising young kobolds, especially musicians. After giving it some thought, Auntie recommends two--one who plays the drums, and one who plays a flute-like instrument that seems unique to kobolds. Your DM is providing no other details, assuming you'd prefer to do that yourself.
Succotash votes to walk home, concerned for Tali. The rest of the party agrees, so Tali teleports herself back to Humble's Ford where she will hopefully make a full recovery from whatever she has.
Pressi remarks that this leaves her as the only woman in the group. Kezzem wonders about Valerie, but although Valerie and Harper are both female, they can't really be called "women."
So, you bid farewell to the kobolds and set off on your journey. You see it as your duty to attract all the nastiest creatures the jungle has to offer, in order to make the way safe for others, but your journey is surprisingly uneventful. You do attract some creatures, but luckily you still have some insect repellent which takes care of that issue.
You walk along the narrow jungle track, and soon come to the tiny kobold trading post you encountered on your way in. It is being manned by different kobolds, but they seem to know who you are. They call cheerful greetings.
Before leaving Koboldtown, Bliss talks to the two musicians. He says he is looking for one person to join his coven. Someone who can speak common has an edge! Bliss talks about the job, being realistic, but also talking about the advantages too.

"Are you asking or are you telling?" says Mookie.
"Um, asking?" says Bliss.

The druid decides now would be a good time to stock up a bit more on insect repellent, and to ask what other wares they have which might be hard to locate elsewhere. He's willing to pass on some coin in fair exchange.
"If any have a, what, wand of reduction? Or what would you call it?" Murphy says. "If we can get ponies, wagons, animals and formians temporarily reduced in size, we can get everyone, and everything small enough for quick transport via oak in a few trips, and one teleport, I think. However, I really am fine taking a walk back through this jungle the way we came."

"Well Murph since small and medium creatures take up the same amount of teleportation space, which I've always considered odd by the way, and all our animals are medium, except for Mookie who is small like us, and since our formian friend is a medium creature not a large one like Scax was, though even if he was, that wouldn't be that big of a deal, the only thing we can't easily teleport would be the wagon, which we could easily gift to the kobolds, and then purchase a new one once we get home. That's assuming you want to make a couple of round trips. I could use teleport for one trip, then return through the tree with you and use greater teleport. you would need to be able to cast transport through trees three times, but we could easily get everyone home in less then a minute if that is your desire."
Mookie pipes up, "Mooncalf doesn't need to breathe, right Mooncalf? So we can let him ride in a bag of holding or backpack."
"That's right," says Bliss, "And after I get me and Mookie necklaces of adaptation and a portable hole, we can all get a ride like that."
"But really, why is it a dealio? Miss Pressi and I can use Shadow walking to bring along like 20 to 25 people."

"I'd rather walk, pick up some more jungle plants on the way back home," Murphy responds. "But, yes, anything on the wagon I can move to the portable hole. Your plan is doable, Succotash. Like I said, I'd rather walk, and help ease our new friends, talk to them about Humble's Ford so they have a better idea what to expect. So, I vote walk, but will go with what half or more of us choose."
Votes - Walk or T'port/plant walk Murphy - Walk
DM Kathy Friday September 18th, 2020 10:46:06 PM
In the village, both kobolds are willing to come to Humble's Ford and join the coven, so it's really just a matter of picking one and working out their stats and stuff. Your DM assumes you'll want to do that yourselves.
At the kobold trading post, there's really nothing new. There is more insect repellent and more antitoxin. There are bowls and platters and cups and mats and simple weapons. If anybody wants to buy something exotic for the folks back home, now's their chance. Come to think of it, that might not be a bad kind of business. Inexpensive trinkets for people to buy and take home to friends and family. Hmm.
You discuss the relative merits of walking and magical transport. For now, you are content to walk. When you reach the Scab, things may change.
You leave the kobold traders behind and continue through the jungle. You occasionally get glimpses of dinosaurs, but luckily, all prove to be either plant-eaters or small carnivores--Valerie's distant cousins.
A few days after leaving Auntie's village, you find yourselves camping at the foot of the Scab. The air is cooler here, and you are reminded that it was winter when you left Humble's Ford. You have spent some time traveling, but spring is still more an idea than a reality. The next part of your journey is apt to get a mite chilly.
Murphy Leafwin Pipewood(KimMc) Halfling Druid - AC 33/T-23/Fl-29 CMD 37 HP 220/132+14temp+74=22 d20+9=14 ; Monday September 21st, 2020 1:21:42 AM
From the kobold vendors in the forest, Murphy will buy up 15 sets of insect repellent and a like amount of antitoxin - or less if they do not have so much. He buys up perhaps half of their remaining goods - half of what remains after his friends have made their purchases. "We will show some of our halfling friends - perhaps a few merchants, too, what you folk have to offer. If there is an interest, perhaps trade may be set up between our peoples." (Let me know the total bill, please :-) )
Along the way through the jungle, the druid took the opportunity to find fallen wood to replace the firewood he had used to add to the soil of the Formian corridor farms.
As the disparate group climbs up from the jungles of Cthonia into the colder edge of a plateau in the Scab, Murphy pulls out cold weather gear for all who need it. He has eight (8) medium-size blankets, 8 small-size winter blankets, and 8 small-size blankets to help cover whoever needs some insulation from the chill. He has cordage to help tie bits on. He can sew to help create more form-fitting coverage as he sits in the wagon with someone else driving. He also has extra bedrolls of small size. Perhaps cutting seams and resewing he might make something of medium size, and still have 4 of the 8 left for kobolds and a moonling.
Regarding our formian companion - is she, or he, large or of medium size?
"Welcome to the Scab," he says to those new to these parts. "A place of dwarfs, ghomes, and giants, and many other sorts. A hard land, rich in mineral wealth, home to some odd and ancient cults. A thousand giants recently marched down from the Scab to try to overrun our valley of halflings. Those giants are no more. They walked in their largish pride, and underestimated us. Halflings make great friends, and fearsome foes."
Murphy will work with the newcomers to see how they might help with the chores of the journey, especially setting and breaking camp, some of the security measures they take - setting alarms, trip ropes, perimeter pits, etc., and helping with food preparation and cleanup. "None of us is too proud to work. The wrong kind of pride leads to the wrong kind of fall. A mixture of humility and the right kind of pride leads to good quality in the things we make and do, and high regard for our friends."
"Hobie, you spoke of Katinka. What stands out in your mind about her?" ================= Craft, Tailor: 14 - to fashion something warm and wearable for those who need such.

WLA Training Planning Murphy thinks to add, "Say, I do believe those of us who are members of the WLA are eligible for some additional training. I am thinking to study leadership under their auspices. Often members of adventuring groups are called into leadership roles, and it seems gaining wisdom and wit in the ways and means of good group guidance might be a worthwhile endeavor. As they reach the colder climes, Succotash dons his cold weather outfit, and he casts endure elements on Valerie to keep his cold-blooded friend comfortable. "Well friends, do we make the long and possibly dangerous trek through the scab, or do we opt for a quicker and hopefully safer route. I'm open to Bliss's idea of shadow walking, or their is still the option of Murph and I using teleportation magic. As far as my plans Murph, I really haven't given it much thought. I don't have any desire to lead others, except maybe in a clerical role. Ultimately, I had hoped to join the dragon's consortium, and spend the rest of my days doing good deeds, but I guess they aren't ready for a band of halflings, and I'm OK with that, but I still plan on spending my days doing good deeds, with no plans to retire. "That includes buying a couple lyres of building," he adds. "Do we have a loot list? Should we set aside some party funds for renovations?"
"More fundamentally, are we agreed with turning the former Temple into a base for us? Do we want to set up trade among the Kobolds, the Formians, and our people here in Humbles Ford? Do we want to set up a halfling village at the Temple?"
"And who else wants to be the Kings of Crescent Valley?"

Random thoughts on governance after Bliss suggests kingship "I think, dear Bliss, we have a Burgomeister, Mayors and a Duke. The former two types are elected, which I like. The latter - well, I don't know much about how we came to have a Duke. He seems fine. Do we also have a Duchess? And a bunch of halfling noble children? But no kings as of yet. Do we really want to go heavy into hereditary nobility, even royalty, in our sweet valley? I was raised to understand that the best rulers are those who are willing to serve, genuinely serve, their people.
"What if we set up a valley council with adventurers, merchants, religious, farmers, a few people to represent valley familial interests, and militia? We're discussing trade with Cthonia and Kerracles. Earlier we made attempts - with a bit of success - at furthering trade with the Red Hills, and recently with the south end of the Scab, and the gemstone miners.
"Our valley is an attractive place. Obviously there are those who covet this land, outsiders. By building our defenses, but also being open to trade, we may be able to enrich our people, and also to see our neighbors - we should include the Culverwood - prosper through peaceful exchange of commerce and services. How might effective governance be established to help oversee and regulate such? Now, some people will never learn, but others will. If they see our prosperity helps them, too, to prosper, well, now, wouldn't that be something?"
He adds, "I so admire the excellent job some of the folk from Angel Springs did in our battle against the giants. We should have them train folk in Humble's Ford and Hovel."

Pre-shadow walk "Likely Shadow Walk will go fine, Pressi. Since, however, the two times we have used it have resulted in significant and perilous encounters, how about I take some of the newcomers over to the Sanctuary? Then I'll return to join you all in the walk, so that if something untoward occurs, I'll be able to help defend." He pauses. "Maybe we used it three times, but I just forgot about the time it went fine?"
If that sounds good to people, he finds a suitable spot to plant an oak tree, then takes up to 5 people and/or critters (including pony Nutmeg) with him via transport via plants, drops off a bunch of gear, and returns in about 20 minutes to put any extra gear into his now mainly empty portable hole, and prepare to shadow walk with the rest. The wagon will be left behind.
DM Kathy Monday September 21st, 2020 2:39:05 PM Murphy buys a lot of gear from the kobolds. Buying 15 repellents would seriously deplete their inventory, so you settle for 5, and an equal number of antitoxins. You also buy an assortment of pottery, textiles, and simple weapons. You spend 50 gold total.
Raqi, the formian worker who has joined Bliss and Pressi's coven, is Small in size.
You discuss WLA training, and begin preparing for a cold trek across the Scab. Then you decide you'd rather not. Between shadow walking and traveling via plants, you are able to return the entire party to Humble's Ford.

Bliss hies off with whoever is going to the WLA branch in Angel Springs. But he is not ready to give up on his Council of Kings idea. "Well, we could found a new halfling nation in Cthonia! Centered on our new temple home! With Teleportation Circles to connect us to civilization!"

If every follower has a spouse, maybe extended family, kids, we could have a starting population of 1,000-3,000 people! And we could recruit more. After all we've done here in Humbles Ford, I bet we could recruit non-followers. We could invite the good kobolds into our alliance of small peoples! Auntie could sit on the Council of Kings. Back in Humble's Ford, Hobie wastes no time in telling his cousin all about the trip to the moon. You're pretty sure Roscoe doesn't believe you.
Succotash visits Grnta the bear and finds her settling in nicely. She very much prefers the security of her enclosure, though she has ventured out a few times at night. She looks quite a bit better; she has put on weight, and her fur is coming in.
Pressi gets right to work setting up for a cohort. She also begins work on acquiring the Dancing Pig, much to Murphy's surprise.
Murphy, for his part, brings his kobold purchases to the General Store to show to Pirnook, but the storekeeper seems dubious. "They're kind of....gaudy, aren't they?" he says, turning a colorful bowl over in his hands. "I'm not sure local folk will go for these. I'll put out a few on trial, if you like."
Bliss, meanwhile, is busy with plans to take over the Wold--or at least, a small part of Cthonia. Whether his companions are equally enthused about the project is another question.
Hobie's experience isn't unique. Most people in Humble's don't believe you went to the actual moon of Kerracles. Some think your tale is an elaborate prank. Some think you're just making up tales to make yourselves look better. Some think you believe you've been to Kerracles, but are obviously mistaken, because who ever heard of such a thing?

As Bliss is talking about a new Halfling nation in Cthonia, Succotash says, "I would love to help with such an undertaking, and being in such a wild and uncivilized location would, most certainly, fulfill my desire to continue to fight to protect those in need! The cleric is almost giddy at the idea of moving there and getting the new community started.
OOC... If Humble's Sword founds a community in Cthonia, we could use that as a home base for our new game when we retire these PC'c at level 20! How cool would it be to have these characters create the town, and then have our new band of adventures call it home?!
Bliss talks over his ideas with Brother Succotash. "Wowsy, that would be great!"
[OOC: Excellent idea, Jeremy!]

To any doubters, I can't help but think of the new coven members... and the MiB coffee scene.
Whatever Pressi's nagging doubts about natural balance and unconstrained growth, she will remain a politician to the end, so she's in. But one step at a time.

"That'd be fine, Mister Deeppockets. Make a small display, and see if there be any takers. How about what you sell them for, you keep 45%, and set aside 10% for your favorite charity that does not begin at home, and leave 45% for me? I'll leave it to you as to what you want to charge. You're the merchant, after all. I wouldn't go too low in the ask, though. They are from the jungles of Cthonia. Gaudy is favored in that land of wild colors." He leaves a dozen pieces of merchandise with Pirnook, then steps into the Catacombs link briefly. He comes out less than half an hour later.
"Ah, ever practical, Pressi. I'm all in favor of alcohol for medicinal purposes. Anyway, I don't have to ask you to take the lead on this - you're doing so already. Let me know if you need any help."
Outside of the walls of the Sanctuary, this time just past the northern end of the eastern wall, Murphy plans to expand the spiritual theme from inside the walls with a place for Kerricles and Wardd, and considers framing a larger area from there for planetary and solar system recognition and research. He brings up with foreman George some of his thoughts. He shows him the painting he made of the Wold and of a new perspective on the moon Wardd he also painted. "Do you know of anyone who could make a three-dimensional representation based upon these drawings?" he asks.
As his friends make plans for expansion into Cthonia, Murphy thinks about how much he loves Crescent Valley. This is his home. His friends and relatives are mainly local. Most of the stories he grew up with sprung out of this valley, or its people's interactions with those nearby. He holds his counsel for the moment, though. He enjoyed traveling through the jungle, but feels no strong attachment there, nothing at all like he feels for home. Not all in the group are from here, though. He finds himself missing friends from the early days of the group, when all had roots here, except - what's his name?
Compared to Cthonia, a - well, he's not sure about kingship, but certainly getting involved with valley politics has it attractions.
[Note of correction: The water basin Murphy built is holding 240 cubic feet of water from the lake on Kerracles, not a mere 240 gallons. He shows a few moon rocks, recounts the moon kraken. If any doubt that story, he tells them he can show them the kraken's eye. He does not describe how they got there.
"It's all right if you don't believe us. I simply state we tell the truth. For those of you who know me, have you ever found me to willfully carry falsehoods? Yes, not many have been to one or both of the moons. Say, if you would like to taste some water from the moon lake, come by the Humble's Sword Sanctuary this afternoon, and you can try some. Pressi continues in her efforts to acquire the Dancing Pig. Old Hamfast Drinkwater is still the official owner of the place, but the day-to-day operations are handled by his children and their spouses. Old Ham can still be found there of an evening, of course, drinking stout and swapping tall tales with the other gaffers.

That normally dresses like a nightmare and that could actually turn you into a newt. Pressi has the self control to avoid saying this out loud with a "That's bold." Her entertainer's outfit with a few business tweaks has never felt so heavy.
"... To a woman with our history, But your father certainly understands that I am not some banker from out of town and that any changes would reflect some rather communal needs. All I ask is a chance to take my case to him."
Later, she tried to explain her reasoning to the party. "This is not just some nightclub or flight of fancy for when I retire. Bliss and I have ever growing covens that require housing and operations now, and can't simply operate out of the adventurers hall forever. And I'd like them to be stationed around here rather than in some jungle waiting for us to finish.
"Besides... The Dancing Pig isn't just a tavern. It's THE tavern. It's the first place I actually called home as an adult. It's been my sanctuary, my sign of independence, the place that I was actually able to finally center. I know it's a stupid place for a home base, but it's my stupid place. "Bliss, you speak of us becoming kings. Might it be prudent for us to speak to existing leaders in the valley? Find out where they think people of our accomplishments might best serve the valley, and the good people of the Wold. What problems can we solve? What leadership positions need filling? What do clerics of Ffloy, of Flower, of Pantheon, of Alemi and Domi and others have to say? If you want to lead, then should the question of existing structures be part of our study?

Succotash suggests that Pressi might want to open a new tavern in the newly-planned community in Cthonia! But to Pressi, it's not about a tavern, it's about this tavern, and she's not going to take no for an answer! She asks Jemmy for a chance to make her case.
"Sure, help yourself," Jemmy says. "Honestly, I think he just wants to make sure the family can keep working here. And, of course, that he gets unlimited free drinks."

Murphy is happy to help the local farmers with the channeling and conservation of water. He puts on his agricultural and engineering thinking caps, thinking through issues of hydrology, adding in his wild shape and spell casting capabilities to lend a hand, to form the land, to provide assistance in a timely manner. Always he asks permission before making changes on people's lands. He asks many local farmers how they have handled things in the past, and what has worked well, and what not as nicely.
He recalls how severely desiccated the soils beneath Humble's Ford became a while back just before the Sargrass Plains became an issue, and a volcanic power thought it a good idea to sit down on top of the Ford. That reminds Murphy - he still has some of the encircling rock walls which partially encompass the town to deal with.
After leaving some funds, some under the watch of Hazel, and some for foreman George, along with guidance and instructions on additions to the Sanctuary, and helping for a few days in assisting the local farmers, the druid says, "So, it's time to head to Angel's Spring. Classtime."
He studies to gain the leadership feat - of course paying the 7,000 gp for the next dues step at level 16 - and also slightly hones his skills in... I'll decide later! Oh, and he turns in to the WLA the lastest copy of his journal, including Cthonia and Kerricles, and related art work.

Conversation with Bliss and Hobie, and Kezzem? Murphy puts his hands on his hips and returns Bliss's glare. "Now Mister Bliss! You are suggesting we all move to Cthonia, and you want him to not start a school of archery until we all move there. What if we do eventually move there? What if it's not tomorrow, or next month, or year?" He softens his face, yet continues thus: "You DEFINITELY do not want him to start a school and attract students who may be interested in following him somewhere else eventually, now, DO you, Mister Let's-Get-Five-Hundred-Followers?" He follows that with a wink.
Then the towhead takes his hands off his hips and says, rather quietly, "Many of us in Humble's Sword long ago promised to defend this town, and valley, and our people. And in some ways to represent them. This is my home. I am not opposed to considering having more than one base of operations. I shall oppose absolutely an entire abandonment of our commitments to this community, Bliss. You want us to be kings over Crescent Valley? You want us to leave Crescent Valley and start a whole new life in a place far from here?" He turns aside for a moment, then smiles, and cocks his head to one side. "How many minds live in that head of yours, friend?"
He looks to the arcane archer. "Hobie, where and when and whether you start your school is for you to decide. All I'm sayin' is, we built the archery field with you in mind. I've seen you use it a few times. Nothin' - other than us being whisked away hither, thither, and yon - is stopping you from using it, improving it, expanding it. And passing on some of your outstanding skills and techniques to others. Besides, having schools in more than one place ain't a bad idea, necessarily. Huh - you could have special seminars in Moon Archery!"
Kezzem then comments on the eventual focus of the temple they found in Cthonia. All he can do is laugh with delight at the paladin's thinking.
He then returns to the archer. "But I'm with Bliss on this - Hobie - what are your thoughts so far?"
Murphy Leafwin Pipewood(KimMc) Halfling Druid - AC 33/T-23/Fl-29 CMD 37 HP 174 4d12=32 ; Saturday September 26th, 2020 1:47:14 AM
Working with Succotash, Hobie, farmers and townsfolk "And speaking of defending the town," Murphy says, "Succotash, you've got the right idea. Yes, I have control weather memorized, also move earth. "As a druid, it can calm the weather in a six mile diameter for a few days, and change from torrential to intermittent gentle rains. Shall I go ahead with that?" If people generally concur, he casts. The rains begin to slow to a very light rate, sometimes just misting a little, letting up. On this casting the effect lasts 64 hours (2x(4x12)).
"With move earth it can take about four hours to affect up to 750 feet by 750 feet, forming mounds, channels, diversions. It won't hurt the land or crops, even trees. But it can certainly mitigate the effects of flooding, and by forming gentle grades, allow the water to drain, but not too quickly, and be properly redirected downstream. After the weather calms down on its own, we can restore the land to its former levels in the same amount of time. If someone wants a pond somewhere long term - that could be done.
"Let's talk over the options with the farmers. Perhaps just the weather control will do the trick. If some want move earth to help channel the water away, we can agree upon a plan."
"Look, I need to go off for a couples days of training, fly back, help out some more, go back for an additional few days, then back again to help out."
"Last thought before I go to Angel Springs: Yes, let's talk over ideas. I'd be fine seeing if there might be other underground edifices in Cthonia. Perhaps in discovering what more we might learn about the temple we were directed to. Considering moving into positions of leadership in some form or another. But can we agree to meet with McGregor Headwise before we commit to some new major direction for our group? He is renowned for his wisdom, and many consult with him. Why not us?"

With judicious use of Control Weather, Succotash is able to help with the flooding. The spring planting is a bit delayed, but it shouldn't make a difference in the long run.
Bliss continues to be enthusiastic about the Cthonia project, and Kezzem is looking forward to actually making it a Temple of Puppies.
Murphy, however, reminds the group that you promised to defend the valley, and you can't really do that from Cthonia. Then he departs for Angel Springs, this time for sure--no, really!
Pressi focuses on training.
Murphy departs for Angel Springs. The rains subside, the spring planting is done, and the most exciting thing that happens is when Alf Humble bets Marlon Tosscobble that Marlon can't ride Alf's prize pig Flossie all the way through town. It goes just fine until somebody bangs a door, and the pig takes off squealing with Marlon clinging on for dear life!

Before Murphy leaves for Angle Springs, Succotash tries to sway Murphy to the whole colony thing by saying, "Murphy, I know we promised to protect the Crescent Valley, and Humble's Ford in particular, and no one is talking about going back on that promise. Bliss wisely suggested we have a permanent teleportation circle installed at both ends, one at the Sanctuary, and one at the temple, allowing us to go back and forth in mere seconds, and allowing our friends, at either location, to to get a hold of us, or just stop in for a visit, in an equal amount of time. With that in place, we can keep our promise, and start a new colony! If our promise, and your attachment to the valley you've called home your whole life are the only things holding you back, then the teleportation circle would completely allow you to have your cake and eat it too! What say you to that idea my Druidic friend?
Succotash will continue to offer his spell casting of Control Weather to the farmers until the threat of flooding is over. When he hears about the pig ride, he makes sure to prepare his 1st level animal domain spell calm animals. Just in case something goes wrong, because what could possibly go wrong, right? After everyone has a good laugh at Marlon's expense, but before anyone gets seriously hurt, he casts Calm Animals on the pig, giving it a DC 20 will save, to avoid being calmed down.
Bliss is serious for a moment. "If we set up teleportation circles, we will be close. But the point I am trying to make here is that I want us to leave a lasting mark on the Wold, to accomplish something. We have protected this valley, and it needed protection. The Giant Tower is fixed. What threat do you see us facing here, Murphy?"
"No offense, just trying to do or be or make something special."

Murphy listens to each one who advocates for moving to Cthonia - Succotash, Bliss, Hobie. "What a precipitous decision you aim for." Murphy crosses his arms. "I will not commit to setting up a halfling town in Cthonia, not now. I have said that I am fine with having us explore it further - no objection there. But I will not agree to this sudden whim. We do not know enough about it. And hot and muggy is not my favorite long-term environment. Explore? Sure. Commit? No way at this point."
DM Kathy Tuesday September 29th, 2020 4:22:45 PM Bliss proposes teleportation circles to keep Humble's Ford connected to the new town he plans to start in Cthonia. Hobie tends to agree.
Murphy's loyalties, however, still lie with Humble's Ford. He doesn't mind exploring a bit more in Cthonia, but he doesn't think the time is right to form a town.
Pressi simply continues with her training.
Succotash wants to prepare a spell to be ready for the Great Pig-Riding, but alas, he does not get the opportunity. There isn't a lot of lead-time between making the bet and riding the pig, because Alf and Marlon are well aware that people will try to stop their hare-brained idea. Their wives, for a start.
But all's well that ends well, and Marlon survives his ride. He returns, covered in glory! And compost. He and Alf spend the next couple of days arguing about whether Marlon's ride "counts" for the purposes of the bet.
Kezzem warns that Alf has been known to eat cats, but he's thinking of a different Alf. Alf Humble is more partial to mutton-pie.

Succotash just shakes his head at Murphy's lack of desire to colonize and says, "Well, I guess exploration is better than nothing for now, however, would you take offense, if Bliss, Hobie, Kezzem and myself used some of our free time, and wealth to make a colony a reality, at least the planning stage? After all, with teleportation circles you would have no need to live at the colony, you could literally live where ever you like, as long as we connect it with a circle."
Succotash spends a large chunk of his free time communing with the gods, and studying more about them. He feels that if he is truly going to honor and worship all of them, he needs to better know them, and be knowledgeable about them as well. In the back of his mind he envisions himself the high priest of the new colony, with a cleric under him, and maybe some followers who dig his sermons.
"Ugh, I'm too distracted by this debate," says Bliss. "Let's come back to it after we think on things."
"I gotta focus on the loot and the gold split."

"Succotash, I agree with Bliss, and it is what I have asked. We have some things to do right now. I will not entertain an immediate leap into colonization unless we have taken the time to think through why, and how. I agree, Bliss, with your desire to do something significant, of lasting value for the Wold. I hope you understand I am not opposed to those goals. I am just not yet convinced that a colony in Cthonia is that thing. I have suggested talking to the people of the valley. To citizens. To leadership. To religious groups. To McGregor Headwise, reputed to be the wisest halfling in our town.
"Who knows, perhaps over time - whether sooner or later, once we've thought through things, a colony elsewhere may be an excellent idea. In Cthonia? Some other place? Maybe. I am not absolutely opposed to the notion. Aside from teleportation linkage... ah. We are Humble's Sword. Risen up out of Humble's Ford. Dedicated to the valley."
He puts his hand over his mouth. Then lets it slide to his chest. "I'm fine with going back to Cthonia to explore. But, as I began, I agree with Bliss. Let's get some practical things handled. Get through our training. Then come back to the topic after we have a chance to think. I love you all. Let iron sharpen iron. And keep Humble's Sword keen."

The Cthonia issue remains largely unresolved; you may have to agree to disagree.
Succotash spends time in study, getting to know about the gods.
Bliss turns his attention to counting and divvying up the loot.
Pressi, her training largely complete, begins wondering what Murphy is planning for the grotto.
Kezzem points out that planning anything is kind of unusual for this group, while Hobie reminds him of the time Alf Humble ate 15 catfish in one sitting. That record, is, of course, disputed, with certain parties claiming that some of the catfish were "real small" and therefore shouldn't count.
It continues to rain off and on, but nothing like the torrents that caused the flooding. Green shoots begin poking their heads out of the ground.
Bliss looks at Mookie. "Well, Mooks old pal, where's the loot list. You said you were going to take care of it."

At all these places and peoples, Succotash asks to set up a meeting with the official and the Humbles Swords. He does not want to meet now; he wants to make a schedule of meetings for the entire party.
And he explains all this to the group. "That's what you're suggesting, right Murphy?"

Bliss comes back to the group with loot piles for everybody. Each pile is worth about 120,000 gold.
[OOC: Still waiting for the details like on the emerald necklace and do we want the fortress to be a party item. See email please.]
He hears that Pressi can buy a half share in one of the very best inns in town for 500 gold. He is flabbergasted.
"This is insane," he says to Mookie and any other party members nearby -- but not to anyone else.
"I have here in my loot pile enough gold to buy 100 inns, and we only got two here in town!"
Mookie laughs his cawing laugh. "Seems to me, Kid, that you guys have kind of outgrown your humble origins."
"Get it!? Humble origins?!"
Ignoring the bird, Bliss looks around Humbles Ford. There are not more than 100 buildings, from the smallest hovel and burrow to the Second Breakfast Club's tower. "If I spent 100,000 gold, do you think I could buy every building in town, Mookie? If I gave 1,000 gold to each household for the right to be the King of Humbles Ford, how many people would go for it? If I promised to pay a salary of 100 gold per year per family for ten years, how many people could I get to move to a new colony in Cthonia?"
"Um, a lot?" says Mookie.
"Yeah, a lot. And I could afford it right now."
Bliss starts visiting all the inns and taverns in town, and what the heck, he goes around with Succotash around the valley. But instead of visiting muckety mucks and secretaries, he goes to guild halls and inns and farms and crafters. He talks to people and tries to figure out what kind of generous wage would compel people to uproot and move to a new colony.

Pressi accepts the offer for the tavern, and takes some time to begin setting up the situation. She also asks Bliss if he's hired a cohort yet, and of whether he is gearing such cohort. (She knows that Bliss has geared his followers more than she has.) If so, she may need to set aside some coins of her own.
To Hobie, she kind of shrugs. "It's... difficult sometimes, being a halfling in a 'town for all people.' Facing the stereotypes, being the wanderer, just knowing that a door will be the right height. Let's maybe put a pin in that decision too."
Pressi notes that she hasn't heard much of Murphy in a while. If she knew that he was out helping an old and disabled woman just find her way to the town, she would be quite alarmed.
As it stands, she just told herself she was imagining being watched.

(The DM is allowing me to briefly introduce Pressi's relatives, RP only. (Just until the next mission proper.) If your PC happens to see a red headed female stranger or two, feel free to say hello.)
Bliss introduces Granny around the group, if anyone is not sure who she is. Everybody calls her Granny or Granny Barleyrow. She is the sharp-tongued, no-nonsense kind of old lady who strikes terror into the heart of young halflings throughout the Valley. She is also a skilled herbalist.
"Granny here is in charge of all the day-to-day stuff in the coven. She's super organized and smart and has way more common sense than I do. She reminds me of my Aunt Priss."
The old lady waggles a finger at Bliss. "Young man, your manners continue to be sorely lacking. When meeting new people, you say, 'May I present ...' and you introduce each person by name. Although of course I know all your names. You can call me Granny Barleyrow. I've almost given up riding herd on this young miscreant, but at least he has a solid household when he comes home."
She looks especially sternly at Kezzem. "And none of your lip, young paladin! I have my eye on you!"
She turns to Bliss. "And stand up straight!"
"Yes Granny."
Mookie is nowhere to be seen.

Bliss also travels, talking to people and asking how much money would induce them to move to a new place. Your answers are a bit disappointing. Most people don't want to leave. They have a good life here; they know everybody; their families are close by. Several point out that money isn't much good without anything to spend it on, and a brand-new town will have limited opportunities for that. You do get some interest from some of the younger halflings, but for them, the lure of adventure and new places is more persuasive than coin. Though they won't turn it down if you're offering.
Bliss also introduces the group to Granny.

[Crazy, way-too-busy week here. Sorry for a few days of silence - not my choice or desire, but just no time... I'm back. Breaking this into three separate posts for the days I missed, for catch-up and clarity.]
Murphy's leadership training at the WLA turned into two days of concentrated studies, and charts, and interactions, and rules, and guidelines, and warnings, and tools of the trade, and styles of leadership, and attracting and retaining followers, plus a half-day followup a couple of days later. The druid's head was near bursting, and his heart filled up with hope and plans. A cohort... Murphy thinks about someone who may be superb in that role, if he will have it.
"Hobie - your cousin, our good Constable Roscoe, is from Humble's Ford, so you cannot say you lack roots here. And it remains to be determined as to whether a new town is going to be built, and if so, whether halflings only, or mainly, or a rich mixture... And, what do you think about the archery range at the sanctuary, and getting a few students under your wing while we're here in town? The home of Humble's Sword? If you're to recruit local, is it not wise to start local? Have you considered taking up the leadership feat? That might help you pull in many potential - or even actual - archers."
"Sure, Succotash, yes, let's talk to some of the leaders. Setting up appointments for when the entire group can meet with them? Exactly!"
"Pressi - good idea on the rod of thunder."
"All right, Bliss," Murphy comments as his friend considers buying up the town. "But if you want to buy the tunnels under the town, it'll cost you 150 gold pieces per linear foot." He does like that Bliss is reaching out to various guilds. Smart, that.
"Kezzem - yeah, planning's a bear, right? But, someone's gotta do it!"

He lets on that he is fiddling with coming up with a few spells to help in carefully channeling plant growth, and perhaps they can chat about that topic at some point.
He goes to speak to someone he knows well about the notion of becoming a cohort. And is not certain as to how well that proposal may be received.
On hearing there is - a human woman, or maybe, what, half-elf? - looking for them, Murphy joins with Succotash to seek her out. "Hello. Succotash is right, though he's not the only one slightly to mix up the name of our group. We are with Humble's Sword. My name is Murphy. Murphy Leafwin Pipewood. The Grotto Murphy has invited Pressi, his fiancée, to revisit the grotto. He has performed some preparatory work. By entering an oaken trunk near the Humble's Sword Sanctuary, they emerge from another oak tree on a central island in the middle of a large magical under-mountain lake. The walls of this huge cave give off bioluminescent light. Soft light also shines from the top several inches of the lake's surface. Soft, thick moss blankets the island.
Under his arm he carries a basket. A large green blanket is already laid forty feet from the oak tree on a nice flat area of the island. He escorts his beloved over to it, sets down the basket, and invites her to take a seat on the soft green cloth. Its color nearly matches the moss which cushions the underside. From the basket he pulls fresh bread, slices of meat, cheese, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries, a bottle of wine. He pours two glasses, offers her one, and takes a sip from the other.
He sets down his drink and takes her hand, which bears the ring he tried to give her on this very spot some time ago. "When we first came here, after a hard day of travel, and exploration, as we sat here, I tried to give you something. Do you recall Emerald City? I designed, working with elves, this." He fingers the ring. Woven bands of ironwood, silver, gold and platinum form the ring. Embedded within a slightly thicker part of the weave is a beautiful, high quality, but small diamond. "I offered it as a token. But, so weary were you, that you hardly noticed. As I could see you were tired, and distracted, I withdrew it for a more opportune time, which came later."
Murphy looks into Pressi's soft blue eyes. "We lead busy lives, helping people, opposing oppressors, solving problems, seeing wonders along with our good friends. But among the most important things in the Wold, perhaps in the universe entire, is this. Two people choose one another. They commit to love, and marriage, and all that entails." The towhead halfling pauses, shrugs. "No doubt, soon, someone or other will bring to our attention that our help is needed." He kisses her hand that wears the ring.
"You know my family, and just how important family is to us. You have the advantage over me, Pressi, in that you know many of my family, yet I do not know yours. When we wed, I want first to have gotten to know at least some of those among whom you were raised. I understand not all was smooth growing up. There are some members of my family who can be abrasive, or thick, or unpleasant. I've been blessed, though, in that many are kind and good-hearted.
"Here is my idea. Tell me your thoughts tonight. Do you still choose me for life? If so, can I get to know some of your family before we marry? And, then, can we marry soon? Maybe after whatever our next grand adventure may turn out to be. And now, my heart, I will close my mouth, and listen to your words."
