Eberyon smiles at Elyngael as she says she will sleep in the garden and says, "Do so as you wish, but if I may, I recommend a small nook in the north east corner of the garden. There's a lovely, and very cozy location, with a very comfortable hammock that I've spent many an hour laying in. Of course you have leave to sleep where you wish, the hammock is but a suggestion. I'll have blankets brought out to you, or would you rather someone fetched your gear?"

The rest of the Wardens struggle to see why they have been chosen for such a task, as it seems too easy and run-of-the-mill for their skill level. Some wonder if Eberyon is going to ask a favor in return. Owen reminds everyone that there is nothing run-of-the-mill about the fact that they just supped and chatted with an immortal power, and are now preparing to sleep in his palace located in the Wold's Cradle, things that most mortals only dream about, and Osul points out that if people, without their skill levels, would have passed through Longbranch's vortex, they would have likely been killed when they ran into Rhiaowiok.

After more discussion, the Wardens take to their beds and sleep a comfortable and restful night. Elyngael too finds herself refreshed and invigorated after her nights sleep in the garden. Each of the Wardens, except Elyngael are awakened by knock on their door, only to find Alfreda there informing them that Eberyon is waiting for them in the sitting room, and that breakfast will be served there. Meanwhile a maid, who happens to be a brownie, is sent out to find Elyngael and guide her to the sitting room. As the Wardens arrive in the sitting room they see a large cart loaded with bacon, eggs, sausage, sliced ham, pancakes and syrup, toast and jam, fruit juice, coffee, and tea. Alfreda says that if they don't find anything on the cart to their liking, he would be happy to take any special requests directly to the chef, and have it here in a few minutes. As the Wardens eat, Eberyon, while munching on a few strips of smoked bacon, begins to speak.

"Deeproot's daughter wishes to be planted in Guyrent's place, and I have no objections, but their is a small problem. Planting a seed from the Wold in the Wold's Cradle requires a special fertilizer, or they will sprout and then die in only a few hours after sprouting. Because it's Deeproot's offspring, she may last a little longer, but obviously we can't just let her die, that would be tragic. The fertilizer is comprised of the ashes of a tree from the Wold, and the ashes of a treant lord. Guyrent will provide the ashes of a tree from the Wold, I'm sure she would have wanted it this way, and it would be a fitting farewell, but the treant lord ashes won't be so easy to come by. Now normally I would never condone killing, but we find ourselves at the mercy of fate, and she is indeed acting in our favor. It so happens that their is currently a Treant Lord, living in the Cradle, who calls himself Adlevar, the treant king. I would never suggest the slaughter of such a magnificent creature, except for the fact that this one has earned judgment. He has created a small grove of treants, and they have been terrorizing everyone in the area, and killing any fey who refuses to bend a knee to Adlevar. I can't stand by and let such a villain go unpunished, but my hands are tied. I would have acted a long time ago, but the gods have stayed my hand. Yes even an immortal power, such as I, am subject to the will of the gods. They told me that such a task is beneath me and is the jurisdiction of heroes, and here you are. This is why I say that fate is smiling on us. Will you Wardens of the Tree vanquish this villain and bring back his ashes for the fertilizer?"

" I am not of a mind that it will be as simple as it seems, however it also seems as though we are doing Eberyon a favor as well by "replacing" his old friend. Perhaps we have become a bit jaded. Maybe we were asked to do this by Longbranch because he considers us his friends."

To the king he responds, "We would be happy to aid you, your majesty. Perhaps you could tell us a bit more about this treant lord, Adlevar. You say he has created treant followers, do you know how many? For that matter do you know what other creatures may be siding with him. In response to every ones questions, Eberyon says, "So many questions, I didn't expect that" then he chuckles and adds, "But of course it is the way of mortals to desire information, especially when walking into a dangerous situation. I must say that is a wise way of doing things, I expect it cuts down on the times you have to spend in the court of Gargul." "I will try to answer each question starting with the first." Eberyon says as he begins to answer the Wardens' questions.

First off, I can't imagine any of the fey in my realm ever truly serving this villain, so I would say that you will only have to deal with his treants, and maybe some animated trees. Since they have the ability to get trees to fight for them, it would be foolish not to assume they will have some tree allies. As far as numbers, I cant say for sure, but I know there are at least 8. Second, I've tried talking to him personally, but the fool in his hubris just laughed at me, especially when he realized I was powerless to do anything. The blood of many a fey is on his hands, and their murders require justice. His greatest asset is his size, and strength, as, with the exception of Deeproot, he is easily the largest treant I'm sure you have ever seen. He's no Deeproot though, for treants of his magnitude are very uncommon, and he has grown even larger in his dormancy, however Adlevar is a colossal walking tree none the less. Third, The grove is only a couple of days journey, and I will send Alfreda along as a guide. The pixie will be under strict orders to return before things get dicey, for I fear Alfreda would only be in your way. And finally fourth, you are correct, that fire is a wise weapon verses Adlevar's treants, and any animated trees, as are slashing weapons. As far as Adlevar himself, he has no weakness to fire, and his bark is so hard, and weapon must break through it first. The only water source in Adlevar's grove is a deep stone well, if that helps. Are there any more questions, or anything I can do or offer to make the task easier?"

Eberyon is ready this time for the second barrage of questions. and so he isn't caught off guard this time. He happily answers any remaining questions. Neshi asks what kind of tree Adlevar is and Eberyon says he resembles a giant redwood. Osul asks about the logistics of exactly how much ash would be needed, and Eberyon says about a gallon bucket full or so would be fine and then offers the use of a bucket of the appropriate size. Armand can't think of anything that wouldn't break Eberyon's hands off mandate. Elyngael feels her skills will be more useful against the normal sized treants than against Adlevar. Neshi has some tricks up his sleeve, as Owen considers what are the best spells to use against such an opponent. Vamir asks if there is anything that treants are susceptible to and if they have any immunities, to which Eberyon answer, "As already mentioned, even though Adlevar isn't, most treants, and animated trees are vulnerable to fire, and even Adlevar is subject to attacks that target plants. As far as their strengths, treants, treant lords included, are immune to mind effects, paralysis, poison. polymorph, sleep effects, and stunning. Normal treants take less damage from piercing and blunt weapons then they do from slashing weapons, (DR slashing) and treant lords have incredibly hard bark, that nothing but adamantine can cut right through (Hardness). Is there anything else I can help you with, or a boon that you wish to ask for. Even though I'm not allowed to interfere, I was never told I can't help heroes who wish to defeat the villain Adlevar."

Neshi asks how long will it take to get to Adlevar's grove, as a means of knowing what preps to make, and Vamir offers to cast find the path, but before Eberyon can answer, Armand reminds them that they were already told that it is a few days trip, and Alfreda will be acting as their guide. Once Eberyon leaves the planning and prep work begins. Osul creates a temporary friend from a beautiful oak, and Armand reminds everyone that they seem to do their best planning on the fly, after the've had the time to assess the situation. Owen is thankful for the gift, and Elyngael and Brawn are ready to rock.

Since it seems like everyone is ready to go, I'll assume that someone rung the bell to summon Alfreda.

After the bell is rung, a few moments later, there is a knock on the door, and Alfreda is there. Gone is his black vest and bow tie, instead he is wearing the typical clothing if his people, as well as a backpack, which you later discover is actually a handy haversack. He also has a long bow slung over his shoulder, and a quiver full of arrows hanging on his belt. "I'm ready whenever you are!" the pixie says enthusiastically. It's as if he hasn't been away from the palace for awhile, and is looking forward to a little outing.

The first day into the journey, Alfreda is excited and chatty, pulling all sorts of refreshments, of both the drinking and eating kind, out of his handy haversack, keeping everyone well hydrated and fed. on the second day he keeps the refreshments flowing, but seems a bit less chatty, keeping his ears to the wind. by day three, the pixie is showing signs of paranoia jumping at every sound the forest makes, until finally the poor guy can't take it anymore and says, "If you stay on this trail", indicating the broad pathway you've been traveling on, "It will lead you right to Adlevar's grove." and with that the Pixie prepares to leave, and say his goodbyes, "I wish you well my friends, and may the gods grant you victory!" Alfreda will answer any questions the Wardens wish to ask, but when they are done, he turns around and begins flying for home.

As they get ready to leave, Armand pats his money pouch only to find it does not jingle but feels rather full. He pulls out two gloves. They seem to be a fine pair of leather gloves. Armand smiles and seems to know something about them.

When they get ready to camp the first night, Armand looks around and finds a spot that has a fairly clear area. Then he pulls something out of the palm of one glove. He bends over and puts it on the ground. Over the course of the next ten minutes, a tree springs up from that spot, it is 60 feet high at its top and has a full canopy of leaves. Fifteen feet up the tree a treehouse grows organically in the branches of the tree as well as several organically woven hammocks outside the shelter. A rope ladder falls down from the treehouse: It is a DC5 climb check to ascend the ladder as a full round action.

Guys this is my legacy item for DMing. The treehouse is in essence the spell secure shelter, the tree is large enough that the diameter is 5 feet so it can be hidden behind. So there is space for 8 bunks, a trestle table, eight stools, and a writing desk... which are also inside the treehouse.

"Well that worked out better than I hoped." Armand turns to the group. "Okay eveyone, we have a safer place to bed down for the night now." He eyes Brawn and Melzat, "I think they can climb up some of the lower limbs, and if they don't want to stay in the tree-house then I'm sure the natural hammocks will hold them."

The next morning Armand puts his hand to the tree and you see the tree shrink down and become an seed again. He then picks up the seed and puts it back into the palm of his glove.

Once Alfreda announces they are near Armand will ask a few questions. "Do you know if they patrol the trail in force or with a few well placed 'guards'? How far away would you say they are?"

To the DM, What sort of terrain are we in?

To the group, "Can anyone fly, and be stealthy? Maybe we need some aerial reconnaissance."

Thursday October 1st, 2020 9:44:47 PM

The wardens all enjoy Armand's new travel digs and the good rest that accompanied it and wake more refreshed than they have on the road for a long time.

Osul asks the others what kind of weather they would like over the next day or so.

Vamir and Melzat stay below for a bit communing with nature, but for whatever reason the information they receive is sketchy and indistinct. Vague recollections of some big trees moving through and changing places every now and again. Sometimes individually, other times in small groups. There seems to be a pervading sense of unease in the plants of the area.

Looking around nervously and obviously ready to head home Alfreda tries to answer the last few questions.

"Well, I'm not sure about actual patrols. I mean they are trees and plants, they could be just about anywhere and we might not even know about it."

Even more nervous, she continues.

"It's not far or to long maybe an hour or two on ground maybe half that by air."

As he answers the last of the questions he flies off as if in a big hurry, even forgetting to wave goodbye to the wardens.

After Alfreda's departure, Osul turns to Elyngael and hits that they should start the recon and overwatch portion of the next phase of the Warden's task.

Some long term buff spells are cast. Armand casts Heroes Feast, and everyone gains the benefits of the spell. Neshi casts Stoneskin on Brawn, and Vamir does so on Melzat. Elyngael does some re-con, as Owen asks if scrying would be prudent. Elyngeal easily finds treant tracks in her searching, and is feeling pretty sure that they are nearing their destination.

When Elyngael points out the treant tracks, the rest of the Wardens have no problem following them, after all, a 30ft, 4500lb walking tree, is going to leave one heck of an impression in the soil. Other then the occasional tree root protruding from the ground, like you may see while hiking through any forest, the path is pretty smooth as it winds through the temperate rainforest.

Elyngael tries sneaking ahead to get the lay of the land and doesn't travel far before she spies 4 treants who are obviously on guard duty. She is about to turn around and report her findings, when she hears a snapping sound. looking down, she realizes she just made the oldest stealth faux pax in the book, she stepped on a stick! The snap wasn't very loud, probably due to the damp conditions of the temperate rainforest, but the ranger instinctively looks around to determine if she was overheard, only to feel her heart sink into her chest as she notices the red treant, on the map, looking directly at her. A split second later, the red treant roars, "Look alive, we have a guest! The alert is loud enough that the rest of the Wardens can hear it and they know Elyngael has been spotted.

Elyngael can act this round, but the rest of the Wardens will require a round to catch up to her, and get into position. Graham please make a marker for Osul's tree friend.

It's not a big deal, Armand can fire of his flamestrike this round, with more possible targets to boot!)

As they prepare to chuck some boulders at the party, the treants each let out a strange whistle, and 8 animated trees who had been standing stone still, making it impossible to recognize them as anything but trees burst from the woods and join the fray. After which, the red treant answers the ranger, "Lord Adlevar doesn't care about what Eberyon says, the immortal power can't touch him!"

Duir punches the purple tree, and Osul creates a fire storm which kills the red treant, and instantly the red tree and the grey tree take root. Owen goes invisible. Armand drops his flamestrike on the blue and green treants killing them, and the light blue, dark blue, purple and green trees instantly take root. Elyngael and Brawn attack the light blue tree. Vamir boosts Melzat's AC as Melzat clobbers the blue tree. with the onslaught of Elyngael, Melzat, and Brawn, the tree is reduced to toothpicks. Neshi shoots out a chain of flame, and finishes off anyone left standing.

The Wardens have a chance to catch their breath. The no longer animated trees are still burning, and will eventually burn to death unless extinguished. What is the next step for our intrepid heroes? (OK, so you guys could have at least pretended that that was a challenge! LOL)

Neshi wonders if they should let the trees burn, or if they should show mercy, but Osul realizes that they are just trees and begins putting out the flames, with Armand's help. Armand also works on putting out the treants to avoid smoke giving them away. Owen flies ahead to do some aerial recon and doesn't travel very far before the trail opens into a largish cove. He sees a group of 6 treants milling about. He doesn't see any 65+ft treants walking around however, which according to Eberyon would be what Adlevar should look like. Elyngael gives the dead treants a once over and discovers that these aren't ordinary treants, as they seem to have a slightly stouter build then a normal treant. Vamir tries to talk to the previously animated trees. Of the 5 surviving trees, one succumbs to its wounds before Armand and Osul can put out the flames. The remaining 4 all seem pretty tight lipped, but Vamir can tell one of them really wants to chat, but is trying to show solidarity with his fellow trees. The witch is pretty sure that with a little coaxing, the tree will talk. (DC 10 diplomacy)

Armand isn't looking forward to cleaning tree sap from his glaive. Neshi knows that the coast isn't clear yet, so he keeps his eyes alert. Luckily, nothing has presented itself yet. Elyngael tries to get a better understanding of the treants she doesn't see anything wrong per say, it's just that these ones seem a bit stronger, healthier, and maybe a bit more dexterous than a normal treant, almost as if they are advanced members of their kind. (I used the advanced template to boost their stats a little.) Osul asks Vamir if the trees want to stay in the path, or if they would prefer to return to their original location. Vamir is able to get through to the lone tree who he suspected wanted to talk but kept silent to show solidarity, and when he does, the tree opens a floodgate as he says:

"This is a strange state of affairs. First those treants animate us and even though we know that it's against Lord Eberyon's will, we are forced to fight for them. In the process we are all forced to face our most hated enemy, fire, and as a result, some of our friends perished, and we all have had our bark charred! Now the ones who sent the fire, the treacherous villain that it is, wish to speak to us. If you hadn't put out the flames, I wouldn't be alive, so I suppose I should thank you for that, but if you hadn't sent the fire, we would never have been in this situation to begin with!

I suppose the treants are ultimately to be blamed, so I shall forgive you for your unkindness, as you were defending yourselves, but remember, most of us trees are for Lord Eberyon. You ask where we wish to allow our roots to dig, and I can't speak for the others, but I kinda like it here. My leaves get a bit more sun, and I have a little more room to stretch out my canopy. If the others don't say anything, you can assume they feel the same, and if they don't, well that's their fault for not speaking up.Now how can I be of assistance?

Armand hands out some healing magic to the trees and though it isn' enough to bring them to one hundred percent the effect is very noticeable. Places where the trees' bark had been scorched so bad that the wood underneath was exposed, now have a fresh layer of bark for protection. Places where leaves had been completely singed off, are now showing spring time like buds, and will have new leaves in less than a week. (I figured if healing magic works on plant creatures then why not actual plants? The description only says that it heals the living, and plants are considered to be alive.) Osul is hear broken that he's the one who sent the worst of the flames, and asks forgiveness from the tree. He even goes so far as ask Duir to judge him. The newly made temporary treant looks down on the druid and in a slow and drawn out fashion, using a deep booming voice, says, "What is done is done, you are not responsible for the acts of miscreants who force good trees into their service. It is indeed tragic that some innocent trees died by your flames, but the tragedy lays on the head of the treants that used them as tools, and ultimately Adlevar. I will still fight for you, and with you, until the true villain is brought to his just deserves!" it is obvious by the tone of his voice that Duir is, for lack of a better term, Pissed off, but it is also obvious that his anger isn't directed at the Wardens. Elyngeal also assures Osul that he was in the right, as Neshi keeps watch.

As Vamir translates and asks a few questions, the tree continues to speak:

"Tell your druid friend that he is forgiven, even though they aren't willing to speak, when I communicate with the others involved, as well as those who weren't animated and were forced to bear witness to the tragedy, we all agree, that the treants are to blame and not him, or any of your friends. Most of the trees are for Lord Eberyon and we love it when he comes our way, as he is always such a good conversationalist, and he listens to our requests if any. The king is heartbroken because he has been forced to wait instead of acting, and as a result Adlevar and his followers view the king as weak. Things have gotten so bad that a handful of trees have chosen Adlevar as their lord, and willingly fight for him.

Normally when a treant animates a tree, we are completely under their control, and as you witnessed, if the treant dies, we instantly take root where we are. However, if a treant lord animates a tree, that tree has a choice. it can chose to go back to being a tree, or, if it is loyal to the treant lord, it can remain animated for as long as it wishes, it can even remain animated if the treant lord dies. Now, normally when a treant or treant lord animates a tree we are more then happy to help, because usually we have the same goals, and the treants have taken the time to develop a friendship with us, but Adlevar has tainted that with his evil ambitions, and somehow he has convinced the treants to join him. Do you have the heartwood to end this villainy?

Vamir asks if anyone else has any questions for the tree, and assures the tree that they will see the job done. Nobody has any questions, and after reassurance from others, Osul feels better but resolves to save the flames for the treants. Elyngeal scouts ahead a bit, but doesn't travel far enough to see anything. Armand begins to wonder about Owen's absence, but before the cleric can get good and worried, Owen returns. Owen reports that there is a clearing ahead with 6 more treants, but no sign of Adlevar. He wonders if moving forward and fighting them in the clearing is the appropriate way you go, or if going around would be wiser. He does remember that the path seems to end at the clearing. He knows that traveling through the forest would mean traveling on difficult terrain, thus fighting and traveling will be hampered, well for everyone except Osul and Elyngael. (Half speed, no charging, no running, and no 5ft steps) However there is the chance that you may have the element of surprise, and you can use trees to gain cover.
How do our intrepid heroes wish to proceed?

(Trees The most important terrain element in a forest is the trees, obviously. A creature standing in the same square as a tree gains partial cover, which grants a +2 bonus to Armor Class and a +1 bonus on Reflex saves. The presence of a tree doesn’t otherwise affect a creature’s fighting space, because it’s assumed that the creature is using the tree to its advantage when it can. The trunk of a typical tree has AC 4, hardness 5, and 150 hp. A DC 15 Climb check is sufficient to climb a tree. Medium and dense forests have massive trees as well. These trees take up an entire square and provide cover to anyone behind them. They have AC 3, hardness 5, and 600 hp. Like their smaller counterparts, it takes a DC 15 Climb check to climb them.)

" I think that one way or another we need to check these ne treatns out. If they are part of Adlevar's crew, we will have to deal with them at some point any way. If they are friendlies then perhaps they will help."

Armand ponders. "I think it can be assumed that if they are in this part of the forest then they are on his side. Plus we know he's been creating treants so they are undoubtedly loyal to him. Confronting them is going to wear our resources down, but leaving them behind could mean Adlevar would be able to call them up while we are engaging him. I personally don't relish moving through the woods." He pauses. "Does anyone want to air walk? I have one spell of that ready. It would make you less squishy if the trees come alive again."

DM Jeremy Battle Map

The consensus is that following the path, and encountering the treants, Owen saw, may be the best route, with he exception of Elyngael who would prefer to go around. However the ranger is a team player, and is willing to follow the consensus. There is discussion as to whether the treants ahead are good or bad but most assume they are followers of Adlevar. The idea of using an alignment detecting spell is brought up, as is the idea as to whether or not treants have alignments. Of course every living creature has an alignment, even if that alignment is true neutral like an animal. The only choice left to make seems to be, do you travel by air or land. Armand offers air walk to whomever would like it, and Owen believes that the more Wardens, in the air, the better.
So the question isn't so much, what approach to make, as it is, how to make it. How do our heroes proceed from here?
