Petty DM Hugh - Well it is technically a Marsh... Friday September 18th, 2020 1:04:41 AM Munhildur collects some stones to sharpen her long spear and dagger. She also prays out loud that the little girl lasts long enough to receive the concoction and grow into a bright beauty before weaving a circlet of plants for Honor.
(OOC: Don’t forget the first attacks made from the dagger and spear that hit get a +1 damage bonus for the blades being honed. The honed bonus goes away after the first hit)
Honor thanks Munhildur for the circlet and then tries successfully to settle the circlet around her helmet. She breaks camp ready to depart.
Zeoll has nothing specific to do and is ready to move forward.
Elron has his whooping stick so there is no further prep needed. He asks what they were looking for.
Asimov answers that they need purple mushrooms from the Stokequet Marsh and the technomancer takes time to get his devices in order.
You end up making good time and as the shadows gradually start getting longer (mid afternoon) the trail transitions from the forested trail you were used to the mud typical of the swamp. The sky also transitions from being a blue sky with some clouds to overcast. As with the great tree, previously you are probably going to need to leave the cart and animals somewhere in order to proceed deeper into the marsh.

Mundhi looks around for a good place to leave the animals. As before, she ensures they have some clean water to drink, a bit of food to eat, and enough rope to move about a certain amount.
"I think I could bring a mule along, but perhaps it's better to leave both here. What do you all think?" She goes along with her companions' recommendations. And heads further into the marsh in search of purple mushrooms, and alert to things popping out of the bog.

Petty DM Hugh - Maybe you should have listened to Sled... Saturday September 19th, 2020 11:13:21 AM Munhildur looks for a good place to leave the animals asking her companions’ opinions on bringing a mule.
Elron doesn’t know about mules and swamps but he is concerned about the lateness of the day and if they’ll have enough time to find mushrooms.
Honor asks if Mules have strong opinions about where they will and won’t go and that maybe Munhildur should see if the mules are willing to go first. She is ready to defer the lead for this task to Zeoll or Munhildur.
Munhildur for her part decides to leave the mules with the cart and other animals before joining the others
Asimov keeps his eyes peeled. He is curious as to how far they’ll have to go to find the purple mushrooms.
As you enter the marsh proper you can see humanoid footprints in the mud ahead, but they don’t exit the swamp. Whoever/whatever the footprints belong to stay within the boundaries of the marsh
This place is typical of what you’d expect of a swamp or marsh, there is plenty of mud everywhere as well as plenty of biting insects and areas of stagnant water.
As you move farther into the swamp you notice no change to the sky, as if it is perpetually overcast.
You can’t put your finger on it but the color scheme of the whole marsh seems slightly off from what you’d expect and you feel this weird tingly feeling every now and then on the back of your neck.
(Know[Arcana or Geography] DC: 20 Highlight to display spoiler: {Perhaps the presence of the ley line that crosses the marsh is impacting your perception})
You find plenty of mushroom stalks but they are devoid of mushrooms as if someone got here first and harvested them all.
You don’t know if it is the surrounding environs or the possibility that perhaps there are no more purple mushrooms to be had and that the child could be doomed for want of them but you start to feel a pall settle over the area of the marsh.

Petty DM Hugh - But, we were told to go into this joke. I mean, marsh. Monday September 21st, 2020 1:24:25 PM Munhildur begins to feel disquieted. She announces that this place is weird.

Honor is untroubled by what is wrong with the swamp. She suggests they could follow the trail and find out. She asks if the stems would be good enough for the cure or how long it would take to grow from stems.
Munhildur begins to laugh at Elron’s joke nervously.
Zeoll suspects that the caps are most effective or else the stalks would have been taken too. He follows the tracks into the swamp. The tracks seem bipedal but it is kind of hard to tell considering the mud obscures their shape.
Asimov is affected by the swamp dread effect. He asks if the strangeness of the swamp had anything to do with the leyline running through it.
You continue to follow the tracks. the swamp is part of a shallow bog. It has deep mud or standing water of about 1 foot in depth.
When you pass through these areas of mud or standing water it is slow going and you get the impression if you had to move acrobatically you would be hampered.
The swamp also contains tangles of stones, soil and thorny bushes known as hedgerows. Narrow hedgerows function as low walls, while wide hedgerows provide total cover as a wall does. Navigating hedgerows is more difficult than the boggy areas but if you are able to climb the wide hedgerows you can move at the same speed you can in the bog.
There is plenty of undergrowth for concealment so it is easy to use stealth in the marsh (+10 to stealth checks)
As you walk through this swampy area of the wetland, your feet sink deep into the accumulated layers of mud. The mud is held in place by all the old dead leaves and stems of the plants which have died some indeterminate time ago. It is dark and blackish and as you disturb it, the scent of rotten eggs wafts up.

"Mushroom person?" Mundhildur queries. She looks at her clothing. Muddy splashes amidst dark green background. "We will need to find a clear running stream once we get out of this marsh." She dips her blade in the water, then looks for something growing green not far from where they stand. She uses it to clean off the metal part of the spear. Once clean, she begins to hone the blade.

Petty Dm Hugh - "Let's keep after this mushroom person." Monday September 28th, 2020 12:01:24 AM Elron knows he didn’t need to get worked up over a little bitty ol’ worm and he wonders what is coming next. Honor says that the leech was disgusting and she cleans virtue, being a little disappointed that the heroe’s life is not as heroic as she thought it would be. She also suggests they go after that mushroom person. Munhildur asks about the mushroom person and suggests she needs to find a clear running stream to clean up once they get out of there. She also starts rehoning her spear. Zeoll remarks he doesn’t want to fight any more of those and goes back to tracking after the footprints. Asimov laments how he doesn’t feel like he contributes much before asking to press on.

"Mushroom person," Honor explains to Mundhildur. "You know, the person we're following who may have taken the mushrooms. Or who may know about them."
"Please don't feel bad," she tells Asimov. "You are clever, and we need somebody clever if we're going to succeed. Let me and Elron whack things with big sticks; that's what we're good at." She smiles.
She does not see anything untoward [Perception 8].

Elron notices that Honor politely did not point out that she and Mundhildur whacked things much harder than he does. That's okay -- he's sure he enjoys it more. Of course, that would mean he enjoyed hitting the egghead more a couple of fights ago, and he hadn't meant to do that. Best to change the subject.

Asimov is starting to feel better too.
(Perception: 21) He says to Munhildur and Honor, "Thank you both. I guess this swamp was just starting to really get to me, but I feel better now."
He sees the lights and says, "We could see where they lead. Perhaps they know the mushroom man? We could always leave some kind of marker to get back here if the lights deviate from the trail" Asimov says.
Petty DM Hugh - I think they might be torches. Should we check 'em out Tuesday September 29th, 2020 2:12:22 AM Munhildur starts to feel the unease she felt previously dissipate. She gives Asimov some encouragement and asks if they should follow the lights or go around. Honor explains what she means by Mushroom person to the giantess. She also encourages the Tinkerer. Elron keeps his thoughts to himself regarding how he enjoys hitting things so as not to imply he enjoyed hitting Asimov a couple of fights ago. He asks if they should follow the lights, which might be torches.. Asimov is starting to feel better too. He thanks the giantess and the paladin for their words of encouragement before suggesting they follow the lights while leaving some kind of marker to get back to where the tracks lead should the lights deviate.
You leave your trail of breadcrumbs and start following after the torches… It is the oddest thing, just as you think you would get near to them, they suddenly seem further and further away. "I enjoy swimming, but it is dark, and they are leading us into the deep, and I do not trust what they have in mind for us. Let us go back to where we just left, find the mushroom man trail, and follow that. And watch our backs as we retrace our steps."

Petty DM Hugh - "Yeah, those lights arre a trrap, I think," Wednesday September 30th, 2020 4:23:46 AM Munhildur is of the idea that you don’t need to follow the lights anymore and that she doesn’t trust whatever the lights have in mind for them. She suggests going back to where they came, finding the mushroom man and watching their backs as they try to find him. Honor is glad to turn around as her armor is awkward in the swamp. She raises the possibility the lights might be on boats or something.
Elron agrees with everyone else noting he isn’t a duck
Zeoll suggests the lights are a trap and asks where they go next.
Asimov suggests they follow the trail he left back to where they diverged.
It’s a good plan, unfortunately, you are already where the lights wanted you to be. Before you can completely exit the deeper water you look around and see what appears to be dozens of pale faces attached to bodies floating below the surface.
They appear to be all races, genders and ages. You see among them taurs, elves, dwarves, gnomes, humans, beastfolk, and halflings.

Munhildur seems to be a little confused by the joke and suggests they find someplace to rest
Asimov asks if Munhildur is ok and then tries to help Zeoll by using his compass.
After your little detour with the phantoms, you can follow the tracks as the water actually starts to become shallow again until eventually you come to a clearing This clearing is roughly 120 feet in diameter, with a dilapidated, circular, 30-foot cottage at its center. He sniffs around for the smell of mushrooms but if anyone had been by recently it is hard to say and the presence of pungent herbs gets in the way of the Liontaur being able to tell if there may be mushrooms present.
Munhildur steps forward to see if she can move the door out of the way. Her strength check alone was not enough.
Honor suggests that since it is getting dark they camp here and try again in the morning
Elron points out it has been dark and what with the hand and the pumpkin they fought earlier is none too keen on camping in the swamp amidst the scarecrows. He asks if Zeoll can tell if anyone is in the cottage now.
Asimov steps forward to help Munhildur move the door out of the way. It takes him a bit but he finally gets it. He asks the others if they should check inside.
Munhildur doesn’t need to be asked twice. She looks around for threats and then gingerly steps on the floorboards.
Inside, the cottage is dank, reeking, and filled with shadows. Haphazardly hung shelves line the walls, covered in all manner of clay jugs, clouded bottles, strangely cut rocks, rotted bunches of herbs, and a museum of other crude curios and remnants of a bone grinder’s artifice. A rusted iron cauldron, with a mouth nearly 5 feet wide and a depth of at least 3 feet, dominates the hut’s single room, its ash-covered surface shaped with a relief of capering fiends and leering devils. Across from the door, against the far walls, stands a highbacked chair made of wicker, the gigantic curved tusks of some monstrous beast, and thousands of teeth (Heal Check DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: {Humanoid}). "If'n we're gonna find mushrooms, we're gonna haf'ta start lookin' in things. Or we could go find th'owner o' this place and ask, if you're worried 'bout ransackin' someone's home." Tellingly, Elron has not started ransackin' himself yet.

"You are right on that," Mundhildur says as she looks at the figure on the chair.
"I'm fine with ransackin' what looks to be a place perhaps abandoned a bit ago?" Mundhildur's statement ends on a question. But she begins to open jars - replacing each lid after looking inside unless she sees something that looks like the mushrooms they seek. She is very neat in her ransacking style.
Honor Bright (Kathy) Wednesday October 7th, 2020 1:28:02 PM
"But--" Honor turns in a full circle, looking about the little cottage. "But--I mean, I'm no tracker, but it doesn't look like anybody's been in here in months. Maybe years. Why would our mushrooms be in here? It doesn't make any sense."
She frowns at the suspiciously demon-y cauldron. "Anyway, it looks like whoever lived here wasn't a very nice person. We should move on."
