DM MikeK - Would be a nice place if it wasn't...you know...crumbling into non-existence Wednesday November 4th, 2020 7:16:57 PM
Nobody is answering the door, so The Shields decide to go in.
Stock finds the door is unlocked, and he pushes it open to reveal some kind of museum or display room.
Sid slips in first, checking for, but not finding any traps.
Micah casts another Detect Magic.
Nothing untoward happens to the elf, and the rest of the group moves in behind him.
They find themselves in an 80' x 80' room. The walls of the room are lined with display cases, and more pedastals and display cases are placed evenly throughout the floor.
The cases contain crowns, necklaces, statuettes, rings, and various other objects d'arte. A couple statues stand on the two pedestals. Tapestries and paintings fill the walls.
The entire room is tasteful and understated, with plenty of room to walk around and admire the objects.
Micah picks up three auras of magic from a couple of cases on the right side of the room. And before anybody gets worked up about the statues, they're not magical.
There is another closed door on the far side of the room.
Like every place else on this crazy plane, no one is here, and nothing is moving.

Stohp eyes the items. "If those aren't trapped or alarmed in some way then I'll eat my boots." Of course as a Minotaur she doesn't have boots so it's a safe bet for her. "Might be worth setting one off just to get the attention of whatever is in charge here if the place isn't totally abandoned like it seems."

Stock gives a low whistle at the contents of the room. He tries to bring his focus on individual objects to get a feel for the wealth here but keeps jumping from item to item too fast to get much of a sense. He also kneels down and examines the area for signs that it has actually been lived in any time recently.
"You mean the display cases, Stohp?"

Bartomus looked at the various cases trying to get a sense of the story being told by what was being shown and some sense of the value of the pieces. But, each was its own special item and he had no clue other than they were important and special.
He walked onward looking at and trying to read the tapestries and coming to a stop at the two statues atop the pedestals. He made the point of spending time looking at the sculptures in detail to determine the materials used and the skill of the carvers having some working interest as well as an appreciation for the craft he enjoyed.

Zanderallen moves through the chamber, careful not to touch anything but just to observe. He is slowly heading towards the door on the far side of the room. "This place giving anybody else the creeps? I guess we keep heading further in. Hello? Anybody home?", he calls out as he nears the far end of the room. He knocks on the door and awaits any reply other than his echo.

"Ok, so are we doing this now or later?" Sid says as he motions to the display cases, "Because it will take time that we may or may not have later." If they give him the go ahead he will search the displays for traps, disarm any he finds, and unlocks any locks he finds.
Else he will continue to search in the direction they are moving for traps and such.
DM MikeK - Menagerie, now museum Thursday November 5th, 2020 7:00:23 PM EXPERIENCE!! - I should have done this a bit earlier. But better late than never. Everyone receives 10,000 xp for Scene 2.
Stohp looks about the room, and wonders aloud if perhaps just breaking in to a case might help generate some kind of response.
Stock is a bit overwhelmed by the items, and takes some time to take it all in.
Micah cautions against breaking a case, thinking of the stone men from his divination. The cleric does take the time to approach the magic auras. In one case lie a pair of iron rings, each about 18 inches in diameter. The aura is strong, but he is unable to determine the school of magic.
In an adjacent case is a hollow mithral tube about 1 foot long. It radiates moderate evocation. He cannot identify it. Next to the tube is a folded piece of some kind of silken cloth. It radiates a strong aura, but he can't identify the school.
Bartomus visually examines the pieces, the tapestries, and the statues. The statues are a satyr carved from a single block of marble, and a troll pieced together from layers of plaster. Both are well made, but the druid is sure from two different artists.
The rest of the items are also an eclectic mix of gold, silver, bronze, cheap metal, gems, and stone. The tapestries are of cloth, hide, and canvas, some painted, and other woven. Some are clearly elf made, others dwarf made, and he even recognizes some taur work on an intricately carved horn.
They seem to be objects from all over the Wold.
None are labelled.
Zanderallen calls out as he nears the far end of the room. He knocks on the door and awaits any reply other than his echo. As expected, he doesn't get one.
A more cautious Sid tries to get in front of the paladin to check for traps. He's a bit late, but checks anyway after Zanderallen's knock. Again, he finds nothing.

Stohp shakes her head "We're going to have to have that confrontation eventually. This place is falling apart and if they're just golems they're going to attack us as soon as we try any solution to dealing with the exabits. If we prepare for them now and try to summon them then we can have an advantage via preparation if we have to fight and if anything here is capable of listening to reason we can save ourselves time by bringing it here now rather then run all over the place looking."

Bartomus watched as Stock shouted out into the room that was behind the door that Zander had just knocked on. He kept looking at the satyr sculpture and then at the plaster of the troll. He leaned into the sculpture looking at the detail of the face and the carving of its details. "So can we at least save a few of these things when we have to run out of this place? I mean I think our level of the Float would appreciate something like this guy in front of the headquarters."
He stepped back a few steps and waited to see if there was any response to Stock's shouting.
Zanderallen (Zachary H) 104/104 AC: 29 T: 13 FF: 28 CMD: 24 Friday November 6th, 2020 10:53:49 AM
Stepping aside when he sees the look in Stock's eyes he lets the dwarf open the door. He shakes his head, laughing at little at the fiery dwarf's impatience. "We're not ransacking it yet, but if there is no one here to lay claim to these pieces of art it would be a shame to let them fall into whatever void this place decides to spit them when it collapses." Zander let's Sid explore the new area first if the elf so desires and then moves in to see what's there.
Micah explains his observations, apologetic that he was not able to discern more about the magical items.
"Although your suggestion makes tactical sense, Stohp, we are here to investigate what is happening to this plane, not to loot it. If anyone is still around here, I would prefer to be able to face them honorably rather than have to make excuses as to why we are helping ourselves to their valuables. I suggest leaving these for now until we have a better understanding of who, if anyone, is still around that might own these items."
He then moves up to join Stock and the others, redirecting his detect magic to focus behind the door.

DM MikeK - Ransacking the palace Sunday November 8th, 2020 8:11:27 PM
Stohp suggests starting trouble now, while they can prepare.
Micah and Zanderallen aren't willing to ransack the place just yet.
Bart asks about taking things when they have to run out of the place.
Stock has reached the end of his patience, an admittedly low threshold. The dwarf opens the door, calling out "Helloooo! We're ransacking your palace! Helloooo!?!"
At Zanderallen's request, Sid moves forward to inspect, trying to keep the visions of all the truly horrible ways a person could die from a trap out of his mind.
This door opens inward, so Stock must step back to open it. Sid moves up to the threshold of the doorway, but not through, mostly because of the two ten foot tall stone statues of warriors in archaic looking armor and swords posted on either side of the door just within the next room.
Both Sid and Stock can see the walls of this doorway are much thicker than a usual doorframe, perhaps a good foot. Only a narrow section of the room is visible from the doorway, with the two stone figures blocking most of the view. The visible portion is devoid of furniture other than some solid looking cabinets on the far wall.
The stone figures have not moved.

Stock looks around really quickly, and twists and turns back out of the door. The golems attempt to bash him as he leaves, but are impeded by the doorway. Before getting beat on, he was only able to note another door on the left wall of the golem's room.
Zanderallen moves forward while pulling out his war hammer, and strikes Golem 1. He is pleased to note the blow cracks the stone figure's torso.
Micah considers stepping forward, but Stock has already retreated back to him. The cleric channels healing power to help the dwarf, and ascertain how thick and of what material the wall is. He guesses about a foot thick, of stone blocks.

Bartomus moves up and casts a spell on Stock, strengthening the dwarf's skin.
Stohp again tries to grapple, but the Stone Golem is proving to be difficult.
Stock is weaving like a punch drunk boxer. He strikes out again and then backs away. The dwarf sees his blow does some damage, but not as much as he'd like. The stone golem is unaffected by the lightning.
Zanderallen tries to get the golem's attention with a massive blow. Despite multiple, deep cracks in its body, it continues to focus on Stock.
Micah moves up, and casts more healing energy.
Sid tags the stone golem (he is flanking), but without a vital point to hit, he's unable to do enough damage to chip the stone creature.

Doors in the base of the island indicate that it also has storage space. On the counter of the island is a granite mortar and pestle set.

DM MikeK - What's in here? Tuesday November 24th, 2020 8:00:00 PM
Sid goes up to the oak island, and carefully inspects the doors. They appear unlocked, and untrapped.
Bart wonders about gold as he walks towards the door on the left wall looking about as he moved across the space. He sees nothing of interest.
Stohp thinks there is no gold here. She idly opens a few cabinets, possibly causing heart attacks among her more cautious comrades. However, nothing blows up. One cabinet holds a set of glass beakers, a burner, and several vials of an unknown liquid. Another is filled with canisters containing various weird items - powders, animal parts, stones, all kinds of things that any spell caster would recognize as spell components. And a third is full of scroll cases, including one dyed a bright red.
Stock moves with Bart to the door. He looks it over, but finds no traps.
Zanderallen wonders about the purpose of a huge empty room.

Sid turns quickly at the sound of opening cabinets, but relaxes at the sight of Stohp. He goes over to Stock and Bart and verifies their work on the door. The elf confirms it is untrapped and unlocked.

DM MikeK - What died in here? Saturday November 28th, 2020 10:33:06 AM
Micah takes the red colored scroll case.
He, and the rest of the Shields, enter the next room.
Most think they'll find some bodies, but there are none to be found.
The room is large, filling half of this building. It is 80' wide and 160' deep, and appears to be the well furnished living quarters for a single person.
This open area is sectioned off, using rugs and furnishings, into three sections - a dining area, where the party has entered, a study, and a bedroom.
On one side of the study, an iron circular stairway climbs upwards through an opening in the roof. Most of the Shields recall this is likely the same location as the tower that could be seen from outside.
The place is a mess. Porcelain jugs and bowls lie in pieces against a wall. A sitting table and accompanying chairs have been thrown against another, Bedcovers and sheets are strewn about. Unidentifiable stains mark places on the bed and the floor. A large painting has been sliced repeatedly, and then impaled through with a chair leg. Scrolls and paper litter the floor. Some are ripped, some are stained, some still lies in puddles of what appears to be urine.
The entire room reeks of sweat and vomit and urine and excrement.
For all of that, there are no bodies. Nor, upon reflection, is there the distinctive stench of decay that one would expect. It seems most likely that there was only one person here, who, for some reason, stayed in this room for many days, and did all this by themselves.
The only item that appears untouched is a small display case in one corner of the room, containing a golden medallion in the shape of the High Woldian symbol of Caeroldra.

Micah surmises the occupant of the room experienced passion, unleashed without any focus. He focuses his own thoughts on magical detection. Somewhat surprisingly, he finds none. All the items in the room are mundane, if of masterwork quality.
Sid glides through the room, looking at items of note. He finds no traps or hidden things. Observing the slashed painting, he can see it is the portrait of an young elf, no more than 100. The painting can be pieced together to make out the scene of an elf standing triumphantly in front of a caged bugbear, in a forest. There is a gold label on the bottom of the frame inscribed with “My First Piece”
On the other wall, Sid spies a stylized map of the 2nd and 3rd plateaus of New Elenna. A jewel encrusted dagger is thrust into it, at a spot marked “Ravenspeak”.
The gold medallion is non-magical. The display case is not trapped or magical.
Bart suggests ascending the stairway.
Zanderallen wonders if a priest or divine agent went mad with the death of Caeroldra. Of more pressing concern to him is whether said person might still be here. He moves to guard the stairway, but observes nothing moving above.
Micah gazes at the medallion for a bit longer. "The one thing he would not destroy," he muses aloud with a shake of his head. Leaving everything for now, he joins the others at the stairway, ascending with them as they do, focusing his magic detection in that direction.

In New Elenna there was marked a spot called 'Ravenspeak'. I don't know if that will be useful," he says putting away the dagger, wrapping it up if he can't find the sheath in some cloth and paper.
He then moves forward when they are ready to ascend and starts scouting out.

Stohp indulges in some wild speculation. "We know an older elf used to live in the house out of here. Presumably he made this place and that's him in the picture. Judging by the way he's gone and the damage here maybe he later came to regret his actions and tore this place up in a fit of passion before going elsewhere?"

Sid pokes around and finds the dagger's sheathe. Pocketing both, he also heads for the stairs.
Stock asks to see the dagger, and checks out the gemstone. He's not completely confident, but it looks like a sapphire. If so, the dagger is worth at least 900 gp, maybe more.
Stohp, Bartomus, and Zanderallen continuing piecing together the story. If the young elf in the portrait is also the old elf that owns the house on Floating City, and is attached/associated all the intevening years with Caeroldra, the death of his goddess would likely make him distraught indeed.
The Shields cautiously climb the iron staircase.
As half-expected, nothing attacks them.
The group emerges on a covered landing/observation platform overlooking the zoo. There are no walls up here. There is a roof,s upported by four thin columns, but otherwise the platform is open, allowing through the faint breeze, and providing an impressive view of the entirety of the zoo.
On the north side of the platform stands a stone pedestal, 4’ high and 2’ in diameter. On the top of the pedestal is inscribed a plus sign, with a depression at its center, into which is etched the High Woldian symbol of Caeroldra.
Looking out over the zoo, the group sees the plane forms a rectangle. There are the three pairs of buildings to the north, bisected by the boulevard, and ending at the Portal Door, which is still there. To the south is an identical three pairs of buildings, again bisected by the boulevard.
Looking beyond the buildings is ... nothing. Not even a color, really. Just a grayish, whitish emptiness.
Staying clear of the edge, Micah takes a moment to survey the zoo in all direction. "Beautiful. It is a shame it is decaying," he murmurs as he focuses his attention on the pedestal. He recasts detect magic and checks once again for auras.

Stock climbs back up to the roof, annoyed at his inability to find a window to air out the stink room. "I wonder who Therus was...? Anyway I think we just destroy them. The collection points may have changed since they were taken and...I don't know. It just seems like the easier path..."
A sly smile extends over Stock's face. "Or we could dump the exhibits in the Float and come to the rescue again..." Stock laughs at his suggestion. "By the way, does it surprise anybody else that is even an option?
Did we see the bloodgrass mutation exhibit?"

Sid shakes his head, "Stock if you're that bored after an hour of tea I don't even know what to do with you. Maybe we could start a 'Wrastling' group for you or something."
Sid also goes down to help Stohp by doing a thorough check through stinky room into scroll room.
((To clarify Sid is specifically looking for any scrolls or paperwork, damaged or whole, that might help make sense of this.))
DM MikeK - Scanning some scrolls Sunday December 6th, 2020 6:25:57 PM
The contents of the scroll provide answers and questions. And some choices, as some of the Shields fall into a discussion about which of the four options is most desirable.
First thing on the agenda, most agree, is to head back to the scroll room and see if there is more information to be had.
Stohp and Sid and Micah pull out the 20 odd scroll cases, and quickly scan the contents, just to get an idea of what they contain.
Quite a few appear to make up a comprehensive treatise on unique monsters/creatures of the Wold. It'd take a least a week to read, but for anyone interested in monsters of the Wold, its practically priceless.
The rest appear to be research documents used to build this demi-plane. Unlike the monster treastise, these were not meant for publication, and are composed of a great deal of shorthand, obscure references, and the like. It would take a great deal of time to get even a fraction of an idea of how he did it. But, it is apparent Caerylon built this place, with a significant contribution from Caeroldra herself.
There is also a map of the zoo....
There are 12 pavilions, 6 on each side of the central building. From north to south they are:
A - Tall Men-Sargrass..........B - Empty C - Wasp-Great Prairie........D - Winter Wolves-Ice Vein E- Dragon Turtle-Turtle Lake...F - Clockwork Automatons-Plateau City

"Weren't they 'Tall Men'?" Sid replies to Stohp, pocketing all of the woldian monster scrolls into the group's bag. Sid's eyes narrow, "Man, he took a Trent from the Culver? Elf had no respect..." he then reads the 'Fey King Avatar -Aisildur' and whispers, "no respect at all."

Or, do we leave them here to face what ever is eating away at this place?" Bartomus was still a bit focused on what the Shields needed to do with the zoo's populous. When Sid mentioned aloud "Fey King Avata - Aisildur," Bartomus looked over.
"So wait one of Lord Eberyon's most chosen is here? Shouldn't we see if there could be a win-win there? Help them out of here, and they help us with all of this?"
Not sure what skill - so just throwing a d20 as Knowledge Geo/Float/Nature doesn't seem right == 2 yep, no clue on who that is, lol.

I think we have to destroy all exhibits to prevent them from breaking into the Float...either that or break the gateway to The Float. It feels slightly evil but falls under the lesser of two evils for me rather than just unleashing a bunch of bees on an unknown part of the Great Prairie...of course it doesn't say that destroying the exhibits actually destroys the things in the exhibits...it might just set everything free at once."
"[b]...and an Avatar of The Fey King...I'll follow your lead on that one. Seems like it might be important to handle separately...To the Bloodgrass first though?"
Zanderallen (Zachary H) 102/104 AC: 29 T: 13 FF: 28 CMD: 24 Monday December 7th, 2020 10:29:18 AM
Zanderallen's head is swimming at the list of creatures contained in the exhibits and the implications of the choice in front of them. "Most of the exhibits here I would be in favor of releasing back to where they came, even if they are dangerous they would be natural dangers of that area. But a kraken into Rum City, or Rakshasa into Dirt City both sound like terrible ideas. And I don't even know what to do about a Fey King. But I guess first things first, let's go get that key from the Bloodgrass Trolls. That sounds like lot's of fun." Zanderallen prepares himself for a tough fight and is ready to head to Building J.
Micah is absorbed in the massive amount of information available. When the others mention going to the bloodgrass exhibit, he pulls himself out of the books to comment, "I am not sure that we will be able to just recover the key, trolls or not. The stasis field may prevent us from affecting what is inside. But it may be best to see what we have to deal with before we spend anymore time in research. That way, if it is required, we may have a better idea of what to look for."
As they move that way, Micah reviews with the others what they recall about trolls and creatures affected by the bloodgrass mutation, so that they can prepare along the way.
