Tempus Domus

Into the Mountain- DM Dank
Wednesday December 2nd, 2020 8:57:41 PM

The party continues on, and Gaffer is certain the giants path is not taking them anywhere close to the direction Stohl and Farrin are leading.

As the sun plunges behind the great peaks to the west, the travelers come upon a Port gate to The Loade. Farin takes out a large bronze key, moves up to the great stone gate inserts it in what appears to be just a shadow and with a series of turns resembling a combination lock, opens the gate. A section of rock slides down, 15’ wide, 8’ high and nearly as thick. Beyond is a straight smooth passage of blackness.

The dwarfs pause so that those without darkvision can create some light and then head in.

120’ of passage borrows into the granite with small alcoves big enough for a single dwarf set into each wall at irregular 5-10’ intervals. Each Alcove has an iron door at the rear. At the end of the passage is a larger chamber that looks to be a supply or resupply loading zone. There are crates, boxes of goods and small wooden buildings stacked about along with 2 dozen dwarves busy loading a three wagon group. Fires burn in multiple locations, with a collection of lanterns as well as a glowing sphere of granite about 2’ in diameter at the center. Stohl and Farin wave and head through taking one of the three obvious doors.

As the darkness outside deepens to the greater darkness inside, Desdichado pauses to talk out his bullseye lamp.

“So, this is the Loade?” asks Desdichado as he follows their guides. “Forgive me, I’m unfamiliar with dwarven settlements – is this your clan hall then? How many people live here?”

Hmerrin reaches behind his head to the quiver on his back.
A sunrod appears in his hand, and he activates it.

He gives a low whistle as they walk past the irregularly space alcoves.
"Try to assault through here and you'd be up to your armpits in dwarves in no time," he remarks appreciatively.

Still looking around, the fighter dutifully follows Stohl and Farin.

The Halls of The Loade- DM Dank
Thursday December 3rd, 2020 5:50:09 PM

Overheraing Toston, Stohl grunts an affirmative even as Sarge answers as well. "We came in through the port gate and are shortcutting our way in Just more convenient to where we were coming from."

Farrin chuckles, "This? No this is just a staging area for caravans master Desdichado.

The dwarfs lead you through a few small and nicely appointed rooms and connecting. Rounding a corner, the passage takes you to a branch and the to the left opens into what must be a truly massive hall. Songs in rythmic barritone and bass roll from within precisley in time with the ring of hammer on steel. A concert if ever one was put on sounds as if it is happening just down the hall to the left. Farrin turns right and leads you away from it, but you all note, both Stohl and Farrin immediately picked up to tune and practically now match their walking rythim to it. A thick iron door, cold forged iron inlaid with Silver gaffer notes, later and the sounds are sealed away.

The pair stops and step aside in the hall and gesture the final 20' to a stout iron bound door. "This is where we part my friends." says Stohl. "It has been a pleasure to be sure." Both wait for just a pause in case anyone has a question.

Toston says to Sarge, "I don't suppose we could bring some of that 'how to build stuff' knowledge back to Dirt City with us to more securely reenforce Tide House? Especially if they owe us one for helping with whatever their situation is?"

Eisenhorn tries to note down the dwarves song, their customs and as much detail as he can about the layout of the staging area.

He asks Farrin and Stohl "Your people's reputation seems to be very well deserved. I am especially intrigued by the granite slab, I assume it is for heating. Is it magic or just a physical process that you use to keep the slab warm? Would you be interested in setting up a channel where we may exchange knowledge? Master Haldrick- DM Dank
Sunday December 6th, 2020 7:54:45 PM

During the walk, Eisenhorne calls a book from his Haversanck, but quill and ink will take longer and Farrin and Stohl are not going to wait. The brilliant wizard will simply have to try and commt as uch to memory as he can and put it to paper later.

Stohl speaks up to answer Gaffer, "Just through there is master Haldrick good sir." Turning to Toston, "To your journey home I do not know. Farrin and I were to get you here and that is all i know

Eisenhorne asks a couple questions and Farrin answers, "I can tell you the granite you ask about involves magic, but to the rest is not for me to make any decisions. That is the privy of the clan lord."

The group heads through the door as Farrin and STohl depart to meet Haldrick

The chamber room beyond is 20x50 with a higher ceiling arched to the center at 15’. An area rug covers the smooth stone floor under a large oval table with 15 chairs. Steel plates and mugs are at each setting a collection of dried meat, cheeses and a few pitchers of beer are on the table as well. Standing up and heading towards the party is Haldrick. Sarge recognizes her kin instantly, his grey beard braided as a single piece and capped with a gold ring that is streaked with ruby and his steel colored eyes could be no one else. Haldrick is dressed in a balck and grey shirt with matching pants and to Sarge’s surprise the old dwarf is wearing a chain shirt beneath as well as having ‘Clipper’ his battle axe upon his hip.
Haldrick moves deliberately and a bit slow slow,

As he gets near Sarg he throws open his arms with a great smile on his face he greets Sarge, ‘Cousin Fyrda’ he booms. "Too long have you been gone. Sit please," he says releasing Sarge from a hug that has lost none of it power.
He gestures to all of you, "Please sit and have something."

Sage's cousin Haldrick Silvervein stands at 4’1” and looks to be about 170 lbs. His beard is nearly to the floor and is worn in a single braid. A great golden ring hangs at the bottom knot and is streaked with ruby. His eyes are steel colored and his face is heavily lined. He has a wide thick leather belt studded with varying gems and precious ores and hard practical short flat boots. Haldrick carries the presence of command and you can pratically feel his precense in the room as much as see him.

"The Forge lord Ulthern shall be here shortly, but until then, fill a glass and tell me of companions who stand with you."

The group intorduces themselves and those that note some discmfort in Haldrick's movements, keep it to themselves.
"Magic, the martial arts and Dragons master Toston, impressive. You do your kind proud to be sure." Haldrick nods politely enough to Sharpe and Gaffer and then to Des. He brightens a bit at Hmerrin's comment on drinking and slides a pitcher across to him, "Well then please fill that tankard."

Haldrick fills his own and offers a toast, "To my cousin Fyrda, and her companions. I welcome you to The Loade, home of the Deepforge clan under the Forge Lord Ulthern Silverforge." He take a deep drink and grabs a piece of cheese, "I trust your journey us uneventful enough and that Stohl and Farrin guided you well. I have to apologise again on sending Malek, I have to admit I panicked a bit and should have taken a breath, but well here there it was. " Haldrick shifts to address everyone except Toston and Sarge, "I hope it did not put you kids too much at ill ease and cause you any panic" You get the impression that the old dwarf in genuinely concerned and earnest in his apology.

"As I'm sure you have figured Fyrda, I have been kept informed in some ways on what you have been up to since leaving, HOw could not, with one of the most oustanding and formidable dwarfs to come to the militia of Deepforge in over a centruy. Haldrick grows more seroius, "News reached me that a direct attempt was made upon you not too long ago, something about shapeshifters?"

Toston says, "Yes that insignia was most curious. I'm not sure what you've heard master Haldrick but our group has managed to establish itself as a neutral 3rd party as it were in Dirt City, somewhat outside the factional rivalry of the Houses, that was in part following the recent business with the Rakshashas. The Tide wasn't always the seasoned adventures you see now and we used to contract for the Crescent Moons Trading Company once upon a time. I'm not sure how much you know about the company but I was very suprised to see a house logo combined with their own."

"As for the Rakshashas, they appear to be potentially active outside of Dirt City and seemingly extradimensional at least with respect to their base of operations. Do you think they may be active somewheres around here too? They appear to be set on enslaving other races for food and entertainment. Dispicable creatures."

Tuesday December 8th, 2020 10:37:03 PM

Des asks about the symbol Marek wore and Toston adds some detail to recent events in and about Dirt City. Hmerrin adds a few bits as well, including the Forst giants on the way.

Haldrick nods as he listens and answers, "I know little of the houses of Dirt City and not much more on the Crescent Moons Trading Company, so I really don't know." Glancing at Des and then the rest, Haldrick continues for a bit on the subject. "Our trade carries far, not directly by us, but through others and that trade finds Dirt City often enough. I like to have a direct contact or two in these places. Marek is one of those"

The tales of the Rakshasa puts him on edge, or rather Des notes the inclusion of the Rakshasa threat being extradimensional does. Des also can tell the dwarf lord clearly does not wish to discuss anything with the party on the subject.

"Frost Giants!" he hoists and tankard and practically rams Hmerrin's in a toast. "A most excellent test of mettle. I look forward to reading Stohl's report on the encounter"

A smaller door swings open at that moment and another dwarf enters the chamber. Haldrick gets to his feet and turns to greet him.

The dwarf is 3’11” and a lean 140 lbs. With eyes of deep brown, his beard is a mix of orange, blonde and deeper red. Braided into 3 separate strands with the right and left strand pulled back over his shoulder and flowing down his back. Each end with a tight knot and a twist of black metal. He wears an open sleeveless vest, usually of gold or orange with black trim. His arms and shoulders seem chiseled from stone rather than that of flesh and blood. Every sinew, fiber and vein, clearly defined and it is not hard at all to picture a hammer swinging endlessly and tirelessly in his hand. He wears a thin gold circlet on his head to designate his position as forge lord and a smithing hammer is always upon his hip and a necklace with an anvil about a steel chain around his neck.

"It sounds as if Dirt City does indeed live up to the reputation and you do as well. It is not blood alone that set me to seek you particularly out. 'The Tide', or rather stories of you, have reached Crescent Valley and from there, to us." the dwarf clasps the hand of Haldrick and then looks to each of you as Haldrick introduces you to the Forge Lord and Master Smith Uthern Silverforge, Keeper of Secrets of the Forge Pact.

"May i present Fydra Deepforge of Silverhand and her companions of The Tide" Haldrick has a seat agian and refills his tankard.

Uthern moves about the room and extends a firm handshake to each of you

"Well met and greetings. Thank you for answering our call. We have uncovered ancient magic deep within the mountain that may threaten the prison Fhorge guards and we dwarf are honor bound by Domi to assist with. Tomorrow Haldrick will take you to our last line of defense. I'm sure Stohl and Farrin advised you of our traditions and so now let us eat and drink and become better acquinted

Toasts are made and food is shared by all. Hmerrin and Gaffer ask about The Forge and Ulthern hoists yet another tankard. "Young man," he gestures to Gaffer, "The Forge is the gift returned from Domi himself at the recreation of Wold and the 5th Age. The secrets of the smith and ore. The Fhorge is a sentience of a gatekeeper which keeps the greater demons at bay and we of clan Deepforge stand between them both. To aid the Fhorge and and honor the covenant with Domi."

Ulthern takes on a slightly more somber tone after a bit. "You are as Haldrick had said you would be, and how I would expect Fydra Deepforge to surround herself upon her departure." Ulthern's voice is calm, deep and seems to pull you into his command and presence like no other has done before. A final moment of eye contact with each of you and he continues

"We Broke through new ground about 8 weeks back and found a new cave system. All the usual at first, some cave critters and some green slime and gases. Further back, after about 4 weeks, is when things went sideways. Creatures like nightmares started showing up, clashing with miners. Hit and run. So we went in force and fell right into the trap. I lost 23 good warriors and friends in the next 3 days. I set to a falling retreat the whole way using about every magic wall we could come up with to slow the things. We set about fortifying the entrances and dead falling the passages."

Of our initial foray, few from the front line came back, but they reported a large thin crystal floating and glowing. Runes about the ceiling and floor and walls glowing and what looked like a window. With horrors climbing through."

Ulthern pauses here for a few moments.

"We’re asking you to go in there and seal it/ destroy it. It’s ancient magic to be sure. From the Third age maybe the Second. A weakening of the prison Fhorge guards against the greater demons. Clan Deepforge with stand and fall if we must, but I nd us Dwarves need to stand firm, but we need help."

Toston takes the issue head on, the group needed a game plan on how to close the gate before heading to it. So how do you close such a thing? Toston's knowledge on all subjects he can think of have no good answers, at least no definitive ones. Magic of the magnitude Ulthern speaks of would require potent spells indeed, like Anti Magic made permanent or Disjunctions.
Sarge suggests possibly destroying the Crystal, perhaps it is like a magic item in that way
Des and Hmerrin wait on the resident wizard, but Eisenhorne is absorbed in thought on the problem. Mulling over his knowledge of planar things and magic.
Gaffer asks about the trap and Ulthern turns the conversation back to Haldrick

Haldrick takes a drink and nods. "We thought the creatures were simply coming through, not that there was a master behind them all. They were so different , so random from each other. Like the Demons from the lands of Unrest. I lead them in with confidence in our craft and tactics, and that i think now was the trap. The appearance of disassociation, of pure anarchy, but there is a mind behind it all and it coordinates. The horrors came from everywhere and all at once. Since our retreat however, there have been no coordinated efforts, as if they lost interest. The cave systems between us and them are vast, perhaps they are exploring or making themselves at home."

Haldrick shoulders sag slightly as he relives his failed lead into the tunnels to defend his clan and Ulthern does not let him sink long, "Haldrick, perhaps you should have Stohl take Fydra and her friends to their quarters. They can prepare, study and rest.

Ulthern stands and raps the table with a ring on his finger and Stohl opens the door. "If you'd care to follow me then?"

Sarge nods along with Haldrick's explanation. "That sounds like a hard defeat. I'm sorry," she says. Then, "what do the sages say? About sealing it back up again? Has anybody done any divinations?"

Hmerrin (MikeK)(HP 153/153 AC:30 T:16 FF:25 CMD:33)

Hmerrin rises. He's been dismissed from enough audiences to know when one is over.

"Our sympathies for your lost warriors," he replies. "If there's a central figure responsible for all this, we'll find them."

The fighter nods, and follows Stohl.

Monday December 14th, 2020 9:03:13 AM

Toston asks about a library and Ulthern shakes his head and simply states, "No." he then adds, "Haldrick has a map to give you so that so don't get lost in caverns." Ulthern takes his leave
Sharpe asks about others to warn or attempts made to break the crystal already.
The rest offer condolences to Haldrick and are ready to follow Stohl with Sarge asking about the sages

Haldrick looks up a Sharpe, a bit of annoyance bordering on anger in his voice, "Attempts? What do you think I led those good dwarf to their death trying to do?" He composes quickly enough and addresses Sarge.

"Of course cousin and like many divinations after we find out the real answer I'm sure their answer will make some sense. But the sages were actually the spark of what took my mind to you. Call home the Blood of the mountain spilled by Domi to run to the sea' "The rest was sound and flashes of images and none of them very pleasant. Chattering teeth, darkness, the sound hundreds of crave crickets make, but one that chills your spine, and the one we also think we know, a massive eruption of the 5 Sisters."

To Sharpe he lastly adds, "There is no one to warn if we cannot do this because there is no point to do so."

Stohl leads the group away, back through the cold iron and silver inlaid door and towards the great hall. Again, you hear the song and ring of steel in time, but again, Stohl leads you away and the sounds quickly fade. Back through a pair of rooms, this time you head through an archway and up a fairly tight right bound spiral stair. At the top, a platform sits with a 2 foot wall and passage beyond. 2 fully armed dwarf nod to Stohl as you file past. A short travel down a tight, for humans, passage and Stohl opens a door on the left of the passage, which continues beyond sight.

Through the door is a well appointed sitting room with human sized furnishings, a pair of couches, 2 full sized chairs, a set of end tables and a pair of wardrobes. A hearth in set in one wall and a large fire burns within it. There is a door leading out. "Through the door you will find a set of 6 apartments. Each is fully furnished and stocked with linens and have a private bath. Master Toston, you will find the 2nd apartment on the left to be suited."

Stohl steps back, "I would expect myself or Farrin in the morning and I'll have some ale and food here shortly."

Hmerrin googles around as they walk, a tourist in a very interesting land.

Reaching their apartments, he gives Stohl a smile.
"You guys sure know how to treat a guy. Thanks. Good night, and see you in the morning."

"Don't know about the rest of you, but all that walking up mountains has done me in. See you in the morning."

Hmerrin turns in shortly after another snack.

Monday December 14th, 2020 8:21:39 PM

Sarge claims a room, then returns to the common area to wait for the meal.

"So, what are we thinking?" she asks the others. "Just go in and take a look? Destroy this crystal thing? Any spells you particularly want me to prepare?"

Toston says to Sarge, "I don't know. Do you think Planar Binding, or Consecrate will help us? What about DIsmissal? I mean some of these are pretty high level spells right? But if we are wrong about our guesses with respect to spells would we be regretting it later?"

To everyone he says, "Let's try to get some rest. We have a big day tomorrow."

He then heads to the suited room he was advised to take.

Gaffer takes one of the remaining rooms, surprised by the level of luxury offered. When food and ale arrive he returns to the common room to join anyone still up but heads to bed shortly after.
He offers his thoughts "It might be a case of stopping whoever, or whatever, caused the new wave of attackers." Before falling asleep.

The group steps in and settles into the suite of rooms and given the last long couple of days, it is not surprising that sleep is foremost on most minds.
Toston does bring up a few spells as to what might be useful, Dismissal, Planar Binding, perhaps Consecrate.
Gaffer as well on what the mission migh entain

However the group at large is exhausted and quickly finds their respective beds. The night passes and the group is awoken by a chiming clock in each of the rooms.

"Pretty fancy," Sarge says of the chiming clocks.

She meets up with her friends again. "Consecrate's good against undead," she says. "but we don't know what we're dealing with exactly. Planar Binding's a mage spell, so I'll leave that one to the mages. As for Dismissal...I don't really like my odds." [OOC: Sarge isn't built with a terribly high save DC; anything with a halfway decent Will save is probably going to resist a Dismissal from her.]

If he thinks he figured it out he makes a mental note for later before heading out to meet with the rest.

"So what exactly is the game plan?"

Gaffer stretches lazily as he walks out to meet the others, catching Toston's question he adds, "I understand that it's been a difficult time, but they didn't give us a whole lot of information to go off of."

Eisenhorn wracks his brain for what the crystal might be and how to close it. (Knowledge Arcana Roll: 36, Knowledge Planes Roll: 29)

He gives the group what he knows regarding the various spells "Planar binding won't work. The spell specifically summons a creature from a different plane in order to bind it. Most of the binding spells I know would work on single creatures specifically summoned to a prepared magic circle and even then it is a dangerous proposition. In this case it seems we are dealing with a large number of creatures which are already here. I could try to dispel the magic of the portal but it sounds like this is beyond a simple dispel and more potent means of arcane nullification are needed." he thinks a bit. "If all else fails I could try to summon one of the creatures or one of its likeness to try and get some information regarding the crystal but that is a very dangerous proposition and would require a good deal of preparation."

Hmerrin opens one eye, and glares at the clock, willing it to be silent.

It ignores him. With a drawn out sigh, the lad forces himself to get out of bed, gear up, and head into the common room.

"Tell me they have coffee," he grouses.

Hmerrin takes in the thoughts of plans, and can only shrug.
"We're gonna have to go down there, and see what we got," he opines. "Figure we go down ready for a fight, find whatever it is, try and figure out what'll destroy it, and then probably come back up so we can plan on the info we find."

He glances at Toston and grins.
"Or, I can hit it with my axe a lot, and see what happens."

As the group talks about different options, Desdichado thinks back on things he's learned from others in Domi's Temple on fighting demons or what might be helpful.

Morning Hours- DM Dank
Thursday December 17th, 2020 9:16:12 AM

Toston checks out the small clock. There is a face panel with 2 arms and a glass front. It looks like a series of gears lies behind the face plate. With his careful examination, he notes two other very small hands set into position of when the clock chimed just now. Certainly the 'set' hands. He also finds a small switch, currently in the up position with 2 other possibilities, Middle and down. However there are no labels.

In the common room the group goes over what they have, which isn't much.
A map to guide you by, stories of demons and horrors that turned back at least 30 battle hardened dwarf led by Haldrick. A crystal of some kind that appeared to be powering a gateway through which the demons were coming through
What might the crystal be, Eisenhorne believes it to be a magical device the dwarf miners activated somehow and that device opened a gateway to another dimension, probably somewhere on the nastier side of the Lands of Unrest. Like any other device, it can probably be broken
Planar Binding won't work, that is for keeping things here, Dismissal might work but the demons could resist and it is a 1 to 1 ratio spell. Haldrick has given the impression of far more demons than you could have spells of Dismissal.
Des and Eisenhorne know a few things about demons, IF the creatures actually are demons.
They are resistant to spells, acid, cold and fire. Immune to Electrical the poison attacks and have all shapes and varieties of nasty abilities as variant as snow flakes.

There is no refreshments in the common room other than what you left the night before. A knock on the door however reveals a young adult dwarf in a practical tunic and pants, but with the hint of mail under his shirt and a hand axe at his hip. "Good morning, If you would follow me, I'll take you to Farrin in the dining hall."

The group follows turning away from the direction you arrived at the rooms and further down the long hall. You pass a series of 5 more doors on spaced left and right, likely additional guest quarters and come to the end of the hall at a stout door. The dwarf opens it and gestures you through.

Inside is a dining hall suited to about 75 guests, but only a fraction of it is currently laid out and a dozen dwarf are eating. You spy Farrin and he waves you over. "Coffee?" he asks as he gestures to a pair of steel craftes

"After you've eaten, Ill take you to Haldrick and we'll head up to the Last Line. Trust you slept well and prepared what way you can."

"Alemi's blessing on you and your kin for six generations," he gratefully replies.

"Last Line? There's an ominous name."

Toston says, "Aside from loading up with provisions from the catacombs but I used most of my gold there before I don't have any specific way of preparing that is better than any other. My limited spells come back each day so I'm as ready as I'll ever be."

"Say Farrin about those clocks in the guest rooms. What do the middle and down positions signify? I take it up means on."

He drinks a decent side cup of coffee for a gnome and gets some food.

"Ready when you are" He nods to Farrin

A moment in Time- DM Dank
Sunday December 20th, 2020 12:20:30 PM

Farrin grips Hmerrin back and chuckles calling to Sarge, "You sure he's mot part dwarf?"
He grins at Sharpe and nods, accepting the compliment, "Famed hospitality of dwarf clans."
Toston asks about the clock hands and Farrin obliges, "Your a keen eyed gnome for sure Master Toston. The three positions are for normal, which is chiming every quarter hour, off, and chime for only a specific time, which is how they were all set."

Breakfast ends and Farrin leads you back down the long passage and down the tight spiral stair. This time your route takes you into the grand hall. Great fires hang overhead 12' up, their massive chain extending up to the ceiling, another 50' higher. To the left the 80' wide chamber extends 200' and to the right it extends nearly 500. Massive columns of natural stone dot the cavern supporting the great weight of stone high above your heads and as your eyes are pulled upward, you spy great lengths of chains seem to be woven through an endless sea of stalactites, each tipped in steel. The chains eventually make their way to dozens of massive forges lining the walls The floor, has a pattern, hand cut that incorporates inlaid gold and gemstones.
The well studied eyes of Toston and Eisninhorne determine at least 4 patterns of summoning they can see just in the area they traverse as Farrin leads the group across
Sarge, now far more versed then before spots several divine sigils on columns supporting the ceiling

The forges are lit and busy. There are dwarf everywhere, hammering steel, pouring gold and silver and working on the great stone of the hall itself. All in time to the song upon all of their lips.

Farrin cuts almost directly across and through a iron bound door that is set into another much wide set of doors. The scene is gone and the door seals the sound away from your ears. This passage is nearly 20' wide, but still low only 10' high. Down this passage a right branch leads away and Farrin takes it. The passage ends in a series of lifts, where Haldrick and 6 battle geared dwarf are waiting.
