DM Mitch Monday December 7th, 2020 8:04:42 AM Ash finally relents. She gives detailed instructions for Mike and Briana to investigate several potentialities while they are off. Niall is ready too Lothlo asks if there is anything they should grab from the store before they head out. Beech grabs his pack being ready himself. Náro doesn’t think it is likely the thieves guild will kill Myrie like the group surmised. In preparation he goes over some spells. Zazu preps for the trip and helps the others do the same.
Preparations don’t turn out to take all that long. While the party is doing those others are continuing the investigation. The books prove as painful to decode as expected and little progress is made before they’re ready to leave.
The orc is talked to by just about everyone and they between them they basically get the guy’s life story. He’s actually only half orc, born here in the EK, and has always been muscle for hire, mostly as a bouncer or caravan guard. He got deep into gambling debt to the guild and has been working for Thomo ever since. He doesn’t really know what Thomo did for the guild and didn’t want to know, he just kept his mouth shut and did what he was told. He’s very clearly terrified of the guild and shared several rumors and stories of terrible things happening to those who cross them. He seems a rather pleasant fellow actually, once people stop threatening him with horrible death by lynching or the guild.
On Myre’s dissaperence all he knows is Thomo left early that morning and showed up hours later looking thoughtful.
There have been merchants cycling in and out of town since they got here, brining food and other goods to keep the town going while they get set up. Thomo was just one of the group, blending in effortlessly. No one’s exactly sure how long he was hanging around town, his wagon was just here on the edge of the clearing when they arrived, but none of them had been in town more than a day or two. Most of the time the Elf manned the wagon, selling knick knacks to those who wanted them but otherwise keeping to himself.
The wagon definitely has secret compartments and escape hatches and every search seems to find more. It’s in the process of being turned inside out a third time when the party leaves.
The party makes good progress heading towards the edge of the kingdom and the true culverwood. They take a boat most of the way before finding a place to store them and striking north. Though there’s no clear marker for the edge of the non-magical forrest and the magical one the party can tell as they reach it. Something about the plants up ahead is just… different somehow. Like they stretch for eternity in front of you.

***posting for James*** I think that the most important thing is we constantly verify our direction and go too long without double checking we aren't being thrown off track. Ash thanks her followers for their assistance and bids them to keep following any leads they might find.
"I've heard tales of trees moving and trails shifting within the Culverwood. We could most certainly become lost. I have no magical means of tracking our position, and my basic survival skills are pretty limited."
"Perhaps we could use the shadow glove to make a hand print on a tree every 60ft or so? It won't help if things move about, but it might be better than nothing". To test the theory Ash will don the glove and try to make a glowing blue handprint on a nearby tree.
DM Mitch Tuesday December 8th, 2020 7:33:25 AM Beech remarks he has heard stories of the Culverwood since he was a cub but the stories don’t do it justice. He asks if anyone is skilled in navigation. Lothlo has hope in the directions provided as he doesn’t have any skills to help with getting lost.
Naithi suggests they constantly verify directions to keep from getting lost.
Niall explains he’s terrible in the woods but he can always try to take a guess.
Ash suggests they leave a trail. She puts a glowing hand print on a tree. It works, but no telling if it’ll help you from getting lost or not.
The party edges into the magical part of the forest to experiment in direction keeping. Immediately they can feel the difference in the air. Everything just seems more… alive somehow. There’s also an unseen presence, like you get when someone’s watching you. Nothing malevolent, not even like the forest is really focusing on you, just a feeling that something is aware of you.
The handprint stays for as long as the party is looking at it, but the moment something distracts them and they look away it seems to vanish.
Lothlo (WillD) -- AC: 19/15/14, HP: 28/28, CMD: 20 Tuesday December 8th, 2020 4:59:15 PM Well, the hand print was worth a shot. I suppose the same thing is going to happen with non-magical trails we try to leave.
I can try shooting a couple arrows straight in front of us to keep us on a straight path, if they are in front of us we should be able to keep our eyes on them. Of course, if things are shifting it may not help much. What exactly were the instructions we had to find the ruins?
Naithi (Will D for James) Tuesday December 8th, 2020 5:02:02 PM If the forest is alive, we want to make sure anything we do to leave a trail isn't going to upset the forest... probably best to make sure you shoot at the ground and not at anything living like trees if we want to try that.

Naithi suggests they makes sure anything they do to leave a trail doesn’t leave a trail and to make sure the ground is being shot at not anything living. Zazu works hard to lead the party through the magical forest he suggests the others not worry as he was lucky to be born here or he would feel the same. Ash laments they didn’t ask the settlement to keep a watch fire going to use the smoke for reference but she feels better because of Zazu’s confidence. Niall follows someone that has a clue. Beech keeps his bow ready but tries to avoid stepping on anything that moves. Náro traveled with Zazu before in the Culverwood so he trusts in the othe elf’s ability though he had forgotten what it was like to be in the Culverwood and how magical it feels. Lothlo does his best to keep the party headed in the same direction and to detect changes in the environment around them that could lead them astray.
The fey told them to enter the forest from a specific point, which they did, and head straight north for about a day. Due to the shifting nature of the woods it’s impossible to have any landmarks along the way so the party will have to trust in their survival skills to make sure they’re going in the right direction.
Zazu’s skills indeed prove adequate to the job. He’s able to lead the party through the shifting woods and keep them going in the right direction despite the strangeness of the place. A few incidents take place along the way, but nothing major. At one point the same tree keeps showing up every 5 minutes, but the group is able to confirm they aren’t going in circles and nothing else in the area looks the same other than the one tree. Maybe coincidence, or maybe the tree got curious and followed them - trees are supposed to be able to move in here after all. Another time a white deer is spotted some distance away but vanishes before anyone can pursue and get themselves lost.
At about midday the party runs a across a small spring that glows strangely resting in the roots of a great oak tree.

Lothlo is intrigued by the glowing stream. Surely if people have run into glowing streams in the past they've told tales about this awe inspiring sight. DM Mitch Thursday December 10th, 2020 8:44:43 AM Naithi keeps trying to help the others from getting lost using the forest walking ability she shares with Zazu. Beech notices the same trees keep showing up and asks if the part is staying on track. Lothlo is intrigued by the glowing stream. He wonders if people have run into the glowing streams in the past and ponders if he’s heard tales of other such streams. Could it be a magical blessing or a trap? He also keeps an eye out for danger. Ash isn’t concerned about the moving trees and she takes the deer as a good omen. She suggests they not drink from it and casts some spells to determine the nature of the stream.
The pool is very much magical. It doesn’t seem to be poisonous though. Trying to remember stories and tales of glowing pools isn’t much help either. The Culverwood is a heavily magical place and there are all kinds of stories of magical pools both helpful and harmful. Legends tell of pools that gives eternal life or healing all wounds being found in the woods, but there are just as many telling of pools that turn you into a tree or make you forget everything.
Nothing around the pool gives any clues. It is very clear and nothing seems to be living in it. It’s ringed by tree roots and there aren’t any smaller trees in the small clearing so presumably it won’t turn you into a tree.

DM Mitch Friday December 11th, 2020 7:53:03 AM Lothlo really wants to drink from the pool. Naithi steps into the pool at the same time Ash lowers her bottle towards it and Beech is able to note that it reeks of transmutation magic. Then suddenly Naithi is a small dog. Panic fills her mind as a weave of strange new sensations assault her (DC 18 will save or be panicked, running in a random direction away from the pool. Success leaves you shaken)
The bottle in Ash’s hands is suddenly a small seal. It barks in alarm and thrashes in her arms - splashing her and causing her to turn into a medium sized snake. Panic also fills her mind as her suddenly legless body drops half on the ground - luckily not in the pool, or she would have possibly splashed some of the others. (DC 18 will save or be panicked, slithering in a random direction away from the pool. Success leaves you shaken)
The seal that was once a glass bottle does fall in the water but is to small to make a significant splash. It awkwardly climbs out and scoots away towards the edge of the clearing. It’s catchable in theory, but still dripping in that magic water.

Suddenly an unbelievable smell hits my nose and I turn and see...humans... Danger! I shoot out across the spring on my four twinkling paws as I search for shelter. Niall steps forward and takes a mighty swing of his great sword towards one of the large creatures attacking them after they swing their clubs.

Ash (RobC) -- AC 12/12/10 -- CMD 13 -- HP 6/25 Tuesday December 15th, 2020 8:39:47 PM

Lothlo pulls out two more arrows, targeting the same sasquatch as before, then moving to the remaining sasquatch should the first fall, and the mask last.

DM Mitch d20+9=11 ; d20+8=13 ; Wednesday December 16th, 2020 10:50:31 AM Beech runs away from the monkeys with a double move Niall attacks Squatch 1 with his sword killing it Ash makes a strategic retreat Lothlo fires arrow at the 2nd Squatch considering the first one is dead.
The second sasquatch roars in rage as it’s companion goes down. It swings wildly at Niall, the club deflecting harmlessly against his armor. The mask floats up and also tries to bite him but doesn’t find a hole to pierce flesh.
As Beech and Ash flee the monkeys manage to snag one of their packs. Rather than following they all stop to dig through it and empty out the contents. It mostly contains food which they hoot gleefully about.

I'd be a little afraid to disobey that thing as well Lothlo takes aim at the second sasquatch and send two more arrows flying.

Náro (Violet) HP: (15/16) AC: (16) 2d4+2=8 ; Wednesday December 16th, 2020 9:29:48 PM
Náro instinctively ducks away as the humanoid creature seems to ignore him completely-- to the extent that he wonders whether it can even understand him. His immediate concern is getting away from that club- and possibly reunite with the rest of the group- so he turns and runs away, about thirty feet- then pauses to cast a magic missile at the humanoid, hindering its progress.
Beech (JohnC) AC 14(18)/14/14,HP 10/16, Character 3d4=7 ; Wednesday December 16th, 2020 11:52:25 PM
While the monkeys are digging in a backpack, Beech circles back around and gets just into range to spray them again with burning hands and will run away again afterwards.....

Zazu (AC18, HP10of18) and Boyo the bunny (AC16, HP9) (Cayzle) Wednesday December 16th, 2020 11:54:14 PM
Zazu spends a round running back.
If he sees a monkey thing, he casts Color Spray at it. DC16.

Camalayas and I turn our attention towards the mask. This is our prize! Our reward from the Culverwood for our act of trust! Nothing else tastes like the flesh on an Oni! The tang of red meat with the mellow nutty flavor of Baboo, almost like a blood soaked wood turned flesh, but electric with the crackle of raw magic! This is a true delicacy that must be eaten fresh or else the flesh will disappear by end of day. (Sasquatch is ok. More of a fatty pork flavor, but stringy, gamey and slightly bite unless you know how to prepare it... Which we do.)
We quickly attack in a pincer formation, our mouths watering.

DM Mitch Thursday December 17th, 2020 9:09:58 AM Niall tries to take a swing at the other squatch this time but his attempt whiffs mightily. Lothlo fires off 2 more arrows at the Squatch. His first flies wide but his second strikes true. The Squatch drops. Náro moves away from the Squatch near him only to fire off a magic missile after putting some distance between him and it Beech circles back to the distracted monkeys and roasts some with his burning hands again. Zazu returns to the clearing casting a color spray at the Squatch. If he wasn’t a woods native he wouldn’t have been able to find his way back. Naithi and Camalayas make a pincer attack on the Oni mask utterly destroying it after Naithi’s first two attacks send it prone and the rest it is helpless to resist.
Naithi, Lothlo, and Niall have killed their attackers. The Spirit Mask turns out to just be a wooden mask. It does not taste good unless you really like eating trees. Now they’re alone in the woods and with it’s magical nature have no idea how to get back or find the others (survival 20 to track yourself back to the clearing or try to find one of the other groups)
Beech finds that him going back was probably a mistake. They were satisfied with the pack, but him attacking them sends them into a rage and soon they’re all over him, this time not quitting the pursuit as he tries to run away. Not that he makes it far, they do 6 damage to him dropping him to 0 (You’re header is inaccurate, you were at full (16) and took 10 earlier so by my count you’re at 0. Again.)
Zazu and Náro have temporarily incapacitated the Sasquatch near them. It won’t be able to act for a few rounds, but it is up the elf and the half-elf to decide whether to keep attacking and potentially finish off their stunned opponent or leave the clearing
N/Z party Squatch - 8 damage; blinded and stunned - 2 rounds; stunned 1 round after that N/N/L party Sasquach 1 - 35 damage; dead Sasquach 2 - 25 damage; down Spirit Oni - dead

Zazu tries to figure out this monkey thing and the others around hereabouts.

Ash (RobC) -- AC 12/12/10 -- CMD 13 -- HP 6/25 Thursday December 17th, 2020 5:47:40 PM "That was a close one, Beech. Let's not do that again" Ash stops running and looks to her right where Beech should have been. "Beech? Beech?!"
She looks about and finally spots him back with the monkeys, and he looks badly injured. "Not again"
Ash turns and heads back for Beech but stops short. She doesn't want to get too close. Getting knocked out isn't going to help anyone. She tries to think of a non-hostile way to end things.
She reaches into her pack to try and find some food that she can throw to the monkeys to get them away from Beech.
Lothlo (WillD) -- AC: 19/15/14, HP: 28/28, CMD: 20 d20+7=20 ; d20+2=15 ; Thursday December 17th, 2020 9:07:53 PM
Lothlo makes sure they are out of danger. I don't think I can retrace our path back... If our party is being their typical noisy selves I may be able to hear them.

Beech (JohnC) AC 14(18)/14/14,HP 0/16, Character Thursday December 17th, 2020 10:08:54 PM
Seeing that the monkeys are very much winning at this, Beech once again runs away... 2 moves, total of 80', if the monkeys keep chasing him, he screams from help and will keep on moving.....
DM Mitch Friday December 18th, 2020 7:51:38 AM Niall takes a moment to clean a blade. He asks the others which way to go. Zazu learns that the Squatch is probably just hungry Ash moves after Beech noticing the Taur is no longer there. She takes some food from her pack and attempts to lure the monkey swarm away. Lothlo doesn’t think he can trace their way back but if the rest of the party is being their noisy selves he can probably hear them. Beech is staggered at 0 hp and only able to take a single move action getting only 40 feet away
Lothlo and Nial have no idea how to get back. Maybe Naithi will be able to help.
Ash manages to dig up another pack of food and throw it at the monkeys. They immediately seize it, hoot angrily at both of you, then vanish off into the trees.
Zazu thinks about the situation. He doesn’t remember anything about sasquatch being particularly violent. They are usually rather timid around other humanoids actually. So either something is influencing them to attack people… or they’re just using the pool as a hunting ground and think you’re a transformed deer or something. Something put in a strange body and disoriented makes easy prey after all.
Lothlo (WillD) -- AC: 19/15/14, HP: 28/28, CMD: 20 d3=2 ; Friday December 18th, 2020 9:23:28 PM Naithi, you're the druid, any idea how to get back?
DM Mitch Saturday December 19th, 2020 2:09:48 PM
(Drat I forgot again. Everyone was supposed to level up to 4 after the thief fight that ended the last module. Please level up over the break so we can do the dungeon at the proper level. Have a good holiday break!)

Ash waits until the monkeys are a little further out of sight before she gets closer to Beech
"Let's patch you up a little there" She casts a CLW spell to heal her taur friend "Now to find the others"
Ash casts a Ghost Sound spell, creating a noise equal to 12 people shouting. That should get the attention of the others and hopefully allow them to follow the sound and gather together.
--------------- Cast CLW on Beech. Rerolling the 1. Beech is healed for 8pts.
Lothlo (WillD) -- AC: 19/15/14, HP: 28/28, CMD: 20 d20+9=14 ; Sunday December 20th, 2020 11:15:21 AM I think I hear something, I bet if we follow that we'll meet up with the rest of the party.

DM Mitch Monday January 4th, 2021 9:14:30 AM Lothlo asks Naithi how to get back, reminding her she’s a druid Ash patches Beech up then casts a ghost sound of 12 people shouting Lothlo thinks he hears something and suggests they follow the commotion
The party eventually manages to regroup and find each other, though it takes a while. The locals that attacked you seem to have all dispersed for now, leaving you at peace.
(If you didn't do it during the break please remember to level up to 4)
Zazu (AC18, HP10of18) and Boyo the bunny (AC16, HP9) (Cayzle) Monday January 4th, 2021 9:23:59 AM
Zazu looks around, a little bit confused. "That was an odd fight. Very chaotic. But I think we can gather together for a new start. What were we all about, anyway?"
[OOC: Happy New Year everybody! And maybe we can have a little recap to remind us of all the balls we have in the air? After a long break, I'm losing track!]

Beech (JohnC) AC 14(18)/14/14,HP 4/20 Character Monday January 4th, 2021 10:12:37 AM "We have a couple friends that we still need to find I think, before we continue our quest to find this instrument of Building...." Beech states and he nurses his wounds from the monkeys.
Lothlo (WillD) -- AC: 19/15/14, HP: 36/36, CMD: 21 Monday January 4th, 2021 11:53:35 AM
Lothlo looks around, to him it seems that even though it took a while "the party eventually managed to regroup and find each other". We may need a little healing, but I think we are all here.
Naithi (JamesD) AC: 19/14/17 HP: 22/23 , CMD = 16 Tuesday January 5th, 2021 12:15:10 AM
I put my clothes back on. That is one way to get in touch with ones primal self. Do you think going into the pool again would result in my changing into a different kind of animal?
Ash (RobC) -- AC 12/12/10 -- CMD 13 -- HP 6/25 Tuesday January 5th, 2021 2:19:53 AM
Ash rubs some of her wounds a little and then checks over the rest of the group to see how everyone else fares.
"I'm wondering whether we should have taken the opportunity to rest up a bit first before venturing into this forest. That, or perhaps we should start to think about finding a safe place soon. It's been a busy day"
OOC: Updated Ash to level 4
DM Mitch Tuesday January 5th, 2021 8:12:31 AM Zazu looks around and notes how odd and chaotic that last fight was. He also asks what they were about. Beech thinks they still need to find a few folks before they go after the instrument of building Lothlo suggests they may need a little healing but they are still hear Naithi suggests that pool allows one to get in touch with their primal self and asks if she goes in again if it will result in her turning into something else. Ash wonders if they should have rested first before heading out or if they should find a safe place to set up camp
The party is currently about half a day’s travel into the culverwood, heading towards an old ruin said to contain a Lyre of Building that will vastly increase the speed of building the town. Even better, it can apparently change to different instruments at will so anyone with musical skill can contribute with it. It was said to be about a day’s travel into the wood.
Now having been separated and then attacked by a magical pool the party needs to get their bearings again to make sure they’re heading in the right direction and possibly determine if it’s time for a rest.
(capturing the thieves guild members was supposed to take you up to 9000 exp and level four. For beating the sasquatch you get another 750. I’m pretty certain I’ve forgotten handing out exp amounts repeatedly so if you were way under 9000 it was probably my fault.)
Zazu (AC18, HP10of25) and Boyo the bunny (AC16, HP12) (Cayzle) d20+9=18 ; d20+11=23 ; Tuesday January 5th, 2021 6:27:44 PM
Zazu is happy to lead the way. "We've got only another half a day, friends."
If it is morning, the Culverwood native leads the way to the old ruin. If it is afternoon, then better to find a good campsite. While keeping a keen eye out!

Náro (Violet) HP: (15/16) AC: (16) Tuesday January 5th, 2021 10:01:50 PM
Náro privately thinks that the fight could have been a lot less chaotic if the other party members hadn't transformed themselves into animal, either because they didn't take due caution, or out of... a sense of adventure... but he doesn't voice this thought, and merely continues to follow Zazu through the forest.
