Honor Bright [AC 19; HP 24/24] (Kathy)
Monday December 14th, 2020 2:13:42 PM

Honor leafs through the book. "Oh! Here's a Dwarven version of 'Domi, Brave and Mighty.' I didn't even know there was a Dwarven version of 'Domi, Brave and Mighty.'" Because Mundhildur had asked, she sings a little of the hymn. Her voice is pleasant, though untrained.

DM Kathy
Monday December 14th, 2020 3:18:15 PM

Honor and Mundhildur continue to be interested in the book.

Elron isn't especially interested in the scroll, unless it's a scroll of Berry Finding, which seems unlikely.

Zeoll isn't quite able to puzzle out the scroll, but Asimov realizes it is a scroll of Spirtual Weapon.

With that, it seems your examination of the ruined library is complete. There is a closed door across the hall, a couple of closed doors up near the temple, and a bend in the hall to the north. Where would you like to explore next?

"Wait, what about this door?" Mundhi asks Honor as the rest move back the way they came. "Want me to open it?" she asks. If it seems good to the aasimar, she uses the handle, if a handle or latch there is, and pushes it open - even though most everyone else has headed back the way they came. But if Honor says not too, then she sighs, and says. "All right. I shall wait, then. Just wait, Mundhildur. Sit on your hands if you must," she instructs herself. She does not actually sit on her hands though.

Honor frowns a little at the scroll. "I don't think so," she says. "I think that one is just for priests. But we can put it back in the book for now."

Honor slips the scroll back into the book, then carefully places the book in her backpack.

To Mundhildur, she replies, "Yes, we might as well check this while we're here."

DM Kathy

Zeoll says a little prayer, then goes to sniff at each of the two doors. This throws his DM into a welter of indecision, because there are three closed doors that you know of.

From the closed door across the hall, you get a faint whiff of dust.

From the southernmost of the two closed doors across from the temple, you smell mildew.

From the northernmost of the two closed doors across from the temple, you smell dust and decay.

Meanwhile, Asimov and Honor conclude that nobody in the party can cast the scroll at present, so Honor tucks it away, along with the book.

Mundhildur goes to open the door across the hall (the one that smelled faintly of dust), and finds that it is locked.

The map, for reference.

Elron doesn't want the party too split up, and was kind of under the impression that they'd be checking out the south end of the building first, so he sticks with Mundhildur. "We ought to open it," he tells her, "but we ought to have folks here first,"

Honor watches Mundhildur and Asimov try to get the door open.

Asimov knows about all kinds of different mechanical things, she assures herself. Just because he can open locked doors--that isn't suspicious. Necessarily.

DM Kathy
Wednesday December 16th, 2020 3:15:30 PM

Elron suggests getting this southern door open before moving north to explore further. Mundhildur tries to bash the door down, with limited success. Asimov studies the mechanism and finds it to be quite simple. He is easily able to get it open. Honor watches nearby, suppressing her paladinly suspicion of people who can open locked doors.

On the other side of the door is a small sitting room, complete with a single table and a pair of chairs, both in relatively good condition. Resting atop the table are the bones of a bird next to a crude knife and a cracked mug.

Elron enters and looks around the sitting room, looking to see what he can find. (Perception = 13) However, his reaction to the bones resting on the table top prevents him from doing very well at it. That knife would make very painful wounds, crude as it is.

The scene in the sitting room presents an unsettling reminder for Elron, but is otherwise unremarkable.

However, there is a door here, in the south wall, which your silly DM neglected to mention, or include on the map.

Asimov approaches the door, and, finding no traps, cautiously opens it. The small cramped chamber on the other side of the door holds two beds, a small sack, and an array of old tools.

Mundhi provides backup for Elron. If he has trouble with the door, she asks Asimov to fiddle with it.

If he is not around to do so, then she tries to open it the conventional way, and, if needed, the bashing way. First slam-bash is ineffectual. Second AC 18 for 6 hp. Let's try another round of that. AC 20 for 8 hp, AC 15 for 7 hp. She does so enjoy bashing.

By the way, Mundhi did not bash the other door earlier, as Asimov took care of it, so the conditions for needing to bash were removed. This time, only if Elron or Asimov can't do it do we resort to the Mundhildur Solution.

"Well, Zeoll," Mundhildur tries to recap some highlights for the sleepy liontaur, "I figure you remember the spidery tower. And the - what was it, stables next to it [yellow room on map]. Then through a little room and hallway it opened up into a little Domi chapel - I figure it was Domi, anyway, where the darkmantle octoflaps tried to attack us [pink room on map]. There was a stone with 5 indentations in it.

"In the next room [light blue on map] we found on a top shelf in the mainly mildewy library a clean and dry dwarf hymnbook to help worship Domi - Honor sang a little from it - and a scroll inside it that Asimov figures is to cast Spiritual Weapon, whatever that is.

"Across from the library was a small dining room [lavender on map] with some old bird bones left on a plate. We found a room [green on map] with two beds and some old tools. Masterwork stonemason's tools, and a sack with coins and a pretty red gem - a ruby. Elron tried out a double chicken saber with which he was able to disarm me of my longspear, after a warm up attempt.

"I heard you found a rusty key - in the other room [light magenta on map]? So I just left the bedroom to rejoin you. Let's look at the next room through that door [atm white on map]. I'll stay here in the hallway unless you need me, because it's getting crowded."

Asimov wonders aloud what Zeoll's key might open.

But for now, you seem to have investigated this end of the keep, and you're ready to move on.

Zeoll tries the southernmost of the two remaining doors. It opens into a cloakroom, once used to store the traveling cloaks, coats, and hats of visitors to the keep. Now only a few moth-eaten rags hang on the pegs and a single soiled hat rests on the table.

Mundhi decides she wants to see what's in the room, so squeezes by whom she needs to in order to inspect. She lifts the hat and looks it over and under. She looks under the table. If there is a carpet, she lifts it up to see if there is a trap door. If no carpet, is there a trap door anyway? What's on the walls? How about in the rags hanging on the pegs? Any loose change or silver berries in what's left of the pockets?

If she finds anything of interest, she tells others. If not, she says, "Onward," and exits to go up the hallway to the edge of the next unexplored room to the north.

After some discussion, Elron decides to keep the double-chicken sabre. At least for now.

Meanwhile, Mundhildur decides to search the cloakroom, so she is the one who finds the berries. Well, perhaps "berries" is overstating it. The desiccated corpses of what used to be berries.

In the southeast corner of the room is a small sprig from a vine. It’s very long dead and has the husks of 2 very small, shrivelled berries attached. They are in such poor condition that It’s unclear what type of vine or berries these may be.

There is nothing else of interest in the room.
