Now that their forces gathered to finally rid the Wold of the Slartanus menace once and for all, Sigvar leads the charge to begin the assault, engaging before he has time to summon any more reinforcements.

The rest of the Agents follow after, eager to have done with the beast that has terrorized them, their commander, and the countryside for far too long.

As Sigvar flies in to engage, Slartanus' scaly neck shoots out and his jaws snap down (AoO for 43 damage). Then, the holy sword connects, but Sigvar can tell that he just barely got through the beast's scaly hide.

(everyone else can resolve one round - if you're not flying and don't have woodland stride or similar feature, then movement through the area is half speed)

Pru follows after her Fist-mates.

Sigvar smiles as his blade bites into the dragon. He had expected some subterfuge, but apparently the dragon has finally gathered the courage to stand it's ground.
If Sigvar is supposed to be taking a turn now then....
He reaches down and lays hands on himself, staunching the flow of blood caused by the bite ( heal 30 damage, swift action)
Knowing that he needs accuracy now rather than brute force he stops power attacking and gets down to business.

Glug, glug, glug. The Cats grace potion has subtle hints of cilantro and ammonia. Bulls strength tastes of salty beef stew and Shield of Faith is harsh like cheap whiskey going down, but with a refreshing wintergreen aftertaste.

Ready when you guys are, I can run out and draw aggro, I'm figuring he'll try the breath weapon and I can prolly dodge it that may let you all get close, well except for the Treants...hmmm..might need to rethink this I wonder if he would use a breath weapon on his own minions. Eh..he's evil, they probably don't mean that much to him. even if he doesn't I might be able to draw the Treants away while you all deal with the Dragon. Then you can come to save me cute little tushie from becoming plant food. let's call that plan A.

Plan B. we all of us ground pounders, screen for Pompous, Pru, and Sigvar. let them get in close and unleash hell on the dragon. then come back and help us take out the Treants.

Plan C. Draw the Treants out and defeat them in detail, and hope the dragon doesn't come to the rescue. fighting withdraw if you will.

Plan D. everybody just charge and hope for the best. I think we can all the problems with that one.

comments? concerns? alternate plans?

Trayvin has entered the fray! With his positioning, it looks like he can give his aura's benefits to Anna, Michael, and Pru, possibly Pompous as well.

Pompous, electing to stay on the ground at the moment, is mostly stymied by the undergrowth that's giving cover to Slartanus (unless he has some feature to get around that?) He does get one lucky shot off that somehow manages to wend its way around trees and vines to pierce the scaly hide.

Michael spends a round spinning battle plans through the telepathic link, but all good soldiers know that any plan will start coming to pieces once battle has commenced. It seems like Plan D at the moment.

Nikolai drinks up and compares the taste to Michael's potions and Anna brings some good draconic energy to the field.

Enemy Turn
Slartanus just growls under his breath at the Minotaur in front of him, which he might recognize as a spell, but probably doesn't. Anna may be close enough to hear though. Defensive Cast success

Michael grins and moves out from behind cover. activating his celestial armor to fly in the straightest possible route to the Dragon.

fly 60' not sure if you can "run" while flying. but if you can then Michael is going 240'.

Michael does this as a full round action. Trying to close the distance to the Dragon while avoiding the Treants. success is weighted towards reaching the dragon, 2nd is avoiding the treants. so fi I have to fly through treants to reach the dragon I will, if I can avoid the treants and still reach the dragon I will.

Sigvar is just taunting Slartanus now. He feels confident zipping around the trees, since they're normal attacks have only the slightest chance of connecting. Even Slartanus seems confused by the flying minotaur, since his great jaws only close upon air. please mind the spoilers though - no one actually id'd the spell

Michael and Trayvin and Nikolai keep getting into position, while Pru lights up the sky with a tremendous blast of lightning, punching through Slartanus' defenses. The treants take damage too, slightly reduced for natural reasons.

Anna zooms in and does a chomp of her own, and connects mightily! Only it's with an image of Slartanus about 2 feet removed from the real thing.

Pompous decides to fly up, since it's too hard shooting through the trees.

Pompous is having no luck today. Even his lucky shots are finding the fake double dragon.

Pru isn't phased at all though and keeps her lightning striking most effectively. Sigvar too, even being on his last legs, manages a strike that practically severs one of the dragon's legs!

Trayvin focuses on taking down the dragon's spell defenses (need an SR check from you though).

Anna shows that she can do that same trick, but between the armor and the spell (that may be dispelled), none of her blows connect.

Michael, suddenly in the middle of the fray and full of concern for his large friend leaps gracefully onto the Dragon's back . gonna ignore your acrobatics other than flavour, because unless you use a hero point, the jump would take your move action and you would only get a single attack). You could hit him from where you were though, so let me know how you want to play it. A flurry of stabs later, Slartanus' spinal column is severed in several places and his wings flop around weakly before he collapses down, bleeding out.

Nikolai, ever practical, knows that the fight isn't quite over, since the Treants are somewhat dangerous in their own right. One was blinded when it hit Michael, but he manages to zip under its thrashing branches and cut it down, and it turns back into just a normal tree leaking some singed sap.

The second treant, though blind, manages to connect once on Trayvin through some wild flailing, but it is not much longer for this world. 16 damage, 80% connects

well done - without those good SR rolls and some crits, that could have been a much different story

OOC: I had Activated the Fly SLA on his Celestial Armor, it wasn't so much jumping on his back it was ending the move phase on his back with style. I was unsure of the distance represented on the map and also if 60" fly speed had a "run" component to it. which would have made it 240" I'll take whatever gets the dragon dead and Sigvar alive. I guess I should have moved my sprite on the round before last. but not knowing fly or distance I felt it was better to let the DM do it. I'll just use the Hero Point.

Michael had more "feel" with his rapier. The thin blade transmitted what was happening along its path better than a thicker sword. but standing on a Dragons back....his bare feet tell him all he needs to know though. There is first a ripple of tension in the muscles, from the pain of impact, then as the spinal column parts it all relaxes, then as blood pressures drops and the body is starved for what the blood gives it, a tremor runs through the body, first fast and weak but as the process evolves, slower but more powerful. feeling it through his feet, the experience is strong and strangely personal.
he puts his hand on the Dragon and bows his head.
Gargul, I've sent many a creature to your lands of rest, and I've tried to only send the ones to you who were a danger to the peace of the world. The treant is well and truly gone, especially now that Pru had exploited its weakness to fire. But it feels good for the rest of them to vent their fury, breathing cold, slicing, striking, and making sure that the tree won't get up again.

If the dragon is faking, he's doing an awfully good job with the not breathing aspect. You're pretty sure that he won't be kidnapping anyone or starting cults ever again.

Once your breathing has slowed, you have the chance to assess the truly staggering pile of wealth that his body had been coiled around. There are litereally hundreds of thousands of coins of all denominations, and while there are some empty potion bottles that would seem to indicate his battle preparations, there are several more stones, jewelry, and arms that light up under magic detecting eyes. Not to mention the trove of items that they didn't have time to strip off the elite team they defeated back in the caves.

Guys...I'm at a loss. I think I'm going to need to buy some extra-large bags of holding to fit all this stuff. I'm also afraid to waste any of the dragon. I don't want to do a ham-handed job flensing the skin from its bones, but I also feel it's a waste to let it all go to rot.

I'll tell you what. I'ma take about 20k gp and go to the Catacombs, buy 2 type IV bags of holding, that should do for the treasure. while I'm there I'll see if they can spare a crew to come to take possession of the Dragon carcass. I'm certain we will get good value for it and they should know how to properly prepare it for whatever we want to do with it. unless anybody has any other plans at the moment?

Nikolai sits back and wonders if it really is over. Over with this dragon's fixation, that is. But true indeed, the green dragon that had bit off more than it could chew, and bit off more than it could chew again, and again, is finally dead.

"We can always use a couple of extra bags of Holding, so I go along with your idea, Michael."

Then he sighs and adds, "As far as the dragon hide, we can't just cut into it. We'll ruin it. That's what I've heard. It takes special skill at skinning to be able to get the most out of it. We probably have someone in our Citadel Town that could do that, a Master Butcher. Meanwhile, he could also make use of the bones and other organs, as any decent mage guild would probably pay a good price for those items. We'll have to do some marketing AND keep those parts from rotting. Got any good preservations spells?"

Most of the crew is exhausted after several fights back to back, culminating in a fight that almost ripped the normally impervious Sigvar to pieces. Luckily, Pru left them a safe spot to rest back in the caves with the Commander.

Michael and Nikolai show their practicality by scooping up a few armfuls of coin and procuring some bags they can use to bring back the rest of the treasure (not to mention the darkwood they left back in the forest on the way here).

Trayvin does know of a simple spell to prevent the body from deteriorating until they can get it back to the Citadel for a competent butcher can harvest the useful parts. Dragon materials are exceedingly rare though, so it will be dodgy going for even the most skilled artisan. Unless they act quickly too, they will lose out on harvesting any dragon humours. They can watch the blood dripping onto the forest floor, where it is quickly revitalizing the flora broken during the battle.

Michael scoops up a little over 20k worth of gold and pockets it.

I'll be back in a bit.

He stops and does some quick figuring....
860,000 gp....that's about 17,200 lbs of gold. I think a type iv can hold about 1,500 lbs. two bags aren't going to get it all. we will need at least 12 bags to hold all this. 13 if for all the items. that's 120 to 130,000gp in its own right. just buying the bags is going to reduce the number of bags we need by one. but if we leave this stuff here its going to walk off if we leave it alone. Heck even if we go with wagon and mules this is going to take close to 25 wagons. 110 mules 27 droves and probably 100 troopers to guard the load. it would be easier to just get the BOH, but it's probably going to more than quadruple our cost vs wagons.

" Why would we need to give away the coin to the catacombs to get bags to carry it? The COMMANDER of the MAILED FIST sits a few hundred feet away and there are no less than a dozen reputable churches within an easy walks distance. Commander Palance could easily walk into those churches and ask for a writ for an amount of money and have the church drive a few carts up here to pick it up. At a later time we simply call in those vouchers, likely in the catacombs who are quite likely to have the means to move large sums of gold easily. We would need to clean up the magic Items and any loose gems that we do not wish the churches to make off with and them simply check their math when they happen by to pick up the amount on their voucher. Based on the fact that the DEAD DRAGON lies within sight of the pile they are drawing from and they will know that WE killed it I doubt there will be any dispute we can not clear up without even raising our voices. "
"Something we need to settle in our minds and in our demeanor very quickly is that we are in a pretty exclusive club right now. We just faced and defeated a Great Wyrm dragon in close combat. In less than 30 seconds, the dragon went from 'Rawr I am being worshiped as a god' to 'I am lying dead on the ground feeding daisies'."
" Let that sink in. "
"The Mailed Fist's asking price for the Agents to help someone out just went up. We as a Fist could probably come close to floating the Fist's coffers with our contracts, and there are hundreds of soldiers in the Fist that are looking up to us right now and will grow up to BE us in a few short years. We need to lead them, groom them and then stand back and watch them make the Wold a safer and better place."

The Agents stand around a bit trying to figure out how to successfully monetize the colossal sized dragon. Any method will have its pitfalls. Anna quickly spritzes the corpse so it won't decompose.

Michael suggests doing some trips with some new bags of hauling. Pru starts stretching her magical muscles again in preparation for a bunch of teleports. It only remains to see who will stay behind to watch the loot.

Nikolai rearranges the body a bit to prevent the loss of more precious fluids. There are also several empty potion bottles about to catch some of the drips. they will have to ask the catacombs about dragon harvesting if they don't figure out a way to get it home. because the DM doesn't know if the catacombs does services like that!

Sigvar, who needs the cash more than anything else, hopes for a method that won't eat into the value. In a destination town of so many reputable churches though, he's sure you can find one that can provide a writ for the amount of coinage, though you would expect them to take some amount of tithing for the service. Even better though, they've added a huge, bolded item to their resume, and expects that they shouldn't have any financial woes ever again.

Pru can bring three people with her on a Teleport. She has enough spellcasting left to make multiple trips back to the Citadel.

She does not, however, have enough to bring her companions one at a time, so she waits until three people are standing still enough for her to grab, and brings them. Then she returns and repeats the process. (Sigvar counts as two people.) Eventually, the only people left in the cave are the ones who want to remain there. The Mansion is available to anybody who wants to rest.

[And that's the best I can do. I never was any good at herding cats.]

Nikolai offers to stay and guard the treasure and dragon body.
"Sorry Anna, but a corps is not an object. It is still flesh and blood and bones, even though the life force is now gone. On the other hand, if you could turn it into stone, then it would be an object. Repair it, then turn it back into flesh. That might work. Don't think that's ever been done before. I'd want to try it on a bug first." Nikolai grins. Then he adds, "Stay here with me and help guard the place. If you'd like, go ahead and look like the Commander, however I don't think anyone of the cult will want to bother us. The cult was based upon Slartanus' influence and promises. Now that he is gone, the purpose and motivation of the cult is gone. But, never hurts to remain cautious and vigilant." He adjusts his Hat of Disguise to look like their Commander.
"This is just too weird. I just don't feel like a woman," then adjusts back to his normal self.

[b]'We will probably be needing those extra bags of holding in the future anyway, so go to the Catacombs and get what you need, Michael. I don't want to get any church here involved. It might create some tension between the faiths if we showed some favoritism. I also rather not proclaim too loudly that we killed a dragon. A good reputation never hurts, but dragons of the chromatic types might take it as a challenge to take us on. Yes, we brought this one down, but I don't want to have to do this every other day either."

OOC: at this rate, it will take a month just to decide who's going back with Pru and who's staying. Unless there's some other plot about this area, I'd rather just jump ahead and get this over with. We know that given a day's time we can have enough normal chests from the Citadel here via teleport, to get all the stuff back. Maybe two days. At worse three? why piddle around discussing who might or might not be coming around to check things out? whoever does, those staying behind to watch can take care of them.

IC:"Pru, Take the Commander back with Pompous Trayvin and Sigvar. Get some chests from the quartermaster and come back. We'll do that until we have everything, including the dragon carcass, back at the Citadel. At Wedding City there's bound to be a Master Butcher, given all the wedding feasts they have here. Michael and I will go look for one to get the hide and inner parts of the dragon. We'll also pick up some big jars to hold the heart, blood, liver, whatever.

Sigvar posts up in the lair and starts bandaging his wounds. I will stick around and keep an eye out for looters. You guys do what we need to to get things moving. He will put on or pocket as many of the magic items as he can so that they do not wander off (also so thieves can't get past his miserable perception score). All in all go get done what needs doing and Sigvar will hold down the , um, lair.

OOC2
From what I read, the Catacombs does nothing with dragon bits dragon hide or anything to do with dragons. All of that needs to be done in game and in character. While dragon armor might be great, even a colossal dragon can't be made into plate for a large creature by the Wolds rules so really it is useless to me. A shield is meh resistance so not worth dumping my own highly magiced shield for. I suggest we keep it and further the knowledge of the Fist as a whole with it or see if someone from another organization like the Wizard's college wants it. Overall it is pretty underwhelming for such a tough creature to beat, but it is what it is.

Did this bump us near a level up?

Between your guard rotations and Pru's teleport trips, all the loot is guarded safely until it can be brought back to the Citadel. Pru bring the Commander back first, along with a couple of her fistmates, all their arms loaded with as much booty as they can hold.

The staff at the Citadel may be used to seeing Pru pop in to the teleportation area by now, but it's not usually accompanied by multitudes of coins spilling out in every direction.

The commander stumbles into the arms of her pages, who immediately begin helping her to her quarters, while Pru has to ward off a million questions so she can go about her business. She commands the Citadel staff to clear the circle, since there will be more people and loot coming. She also thinks to bring back the archivist and master leatherworker on one trip to assess the dragon for useful components. Between the assortment of things that Michael and Nikolai procured, there's enough chests and jars and bags to bring the pieces back home.

After all that, they're going to need a long rest. There are forms and reports to prepare, but the Commander won't be wanting to see those for a while, not until she's had the chance to recover herself.

Everyone go ahead and level up to 17. Congratz!

Also, I do agree that the amount of hide is a little silly. If you're the only one interested in the dragon armor, I'm gonna see if I can swing it so you can. If more people are interested, you'll need to decide amongst yourselves how to split it up.

I am not that interested in it, but thank you. I am leaning more towards what I can do to mitigate damage right now and that looks like selling my current armor and buying adamantite, again. I did want to see if maybe Sigvar could trade his current magical armor into the citadel to get an equivelently priced, lower plus adamantite armor for it though.
IC
WHen Sigvar returns to the Citadel he adjourns to his room and peels the damaged and acid spattered remains of his armor off and after donning a robe, heads to the baths and then to the medics. He knows that he could use Gargul's power that the God of death has invested in him to heal his wounds, but there are healers at the hospital that may never see wounds like these again. Let them hone their skill and make the Mailed Fist that much stronger, besides, he has the time to let the wounds heal while he plots how to improve his kit for the next mission. Commander Palance will need to come up with something special to top fighting an elder wyrm and it's minions, but the Wold is a dangerous place, surely she has jobs tough enough.

Nikolai is glad to finally be back with their commander in one piece. He is worried though. This could happen again, and again, and again, and again, and....

He has lost confidence in the ability of their commander. How could she have been dominated? How are they to prevent such a thing happening again? Could she be dominated to take the Mailed Fist into another war?

A lot of questions and no answers.

For the time being, things will go back to normal, but it won't be the same. If Commander Palance will divulge how this happened, they can work on preventing it from happening again. Or try to. But their enemies will know that if it can happen once, it can happen again.

Just a year ago this would not have happened. Slartanus would NEVER have tried something like this against the old Mailed Fist. But now, anyone with a vendetta against the Mailed Fist can copy-cat what Slartanus did.

With those thoughts, Nikolai gets cleaned up and starts on writing up their report.

Michael gets back from the Catacombs. the first thing he does is start loading the gold into extra-large sacks. he then takes the Sack and shrinks it with his shrinking wand.

since 17500lbs / 4000 = 4.375 lbs of gold shrunk, he has more than enough room in the bag for all the magic items as well. he starts looking at the Dragon.

maybe if we turn it to stone? eh.. let's get it to the Citadel then we can figure it out.

a shrink charge later and the dragon is in the bag.

cu/ft of gold loose jumble 36,108, 10cu/ft bags 361,080 839000/361,080 = 3 charges of the Shrink wand. +1 for the dragon. =4.

I make sure all the swords, spears and arrows, and daggers are in scabbard and quivers or have something tied around the heads so that they won't puncture the bag. I have 50 extra-large sacks 47 after the gold is all put up that I can use for padding. I even make sure the dragon's claws are padded and its jaws tied shut.
then richer than a Fargunian lord, Michael retires to the mansion to await Pru and the teleport to the Citadel.

Sigvar gladly takes some spa time, and donates his body to science for a couple of days. Who knows what the medics will come up with? (I don't see why the fist couldn't accommodate trading in your armor for one of equal price. I see that as being consistent with the weapon trade)

Anna takes the time to get her head right, asking Pru for assistance to visit a grove for a few days of quiet contemplation.

Nikolai begins his reporting, but knows that the Fist has to learn from this experience. How can they prevent it happening again? The Fist can't afford to have its commander be vulnerable like this.

Pompous, not really needing to recover from any serious wounds, takes pencil to notepaper. He seems to be designing some mysterious trap or other. And is that an ACME order form?

Trayvin check in on the commander for a checkup. She's still not really feeling up to visitors, but she knows she has to show that she's improving. Trayvin determines that she's healing as well as can be expected, the poison damage is a thing of the past, and there is no outside influence on her.

Michael tidies up all the loot as Pru performs several trips back and forth. She may need to take a rest to recover spell slots before she gets it all, but she gets it all in the end. She finally is able to kick off her shoes and take a good long soak.

Everyone goes over the gear in some free time. There's lots of gold to go around, and probably some nice finds that someone is going to want to keep. But like good mercenaries and adventurers, their thoughts are always on upping their game for the next epic fight. Q has put it all in the vaults for storage until it is claimed or sold, and Michael certainly enjoys his time in and out, maybe even making excuses to see the plucky quartermaster a few more times than is absolutely necessary.

The Agents continue to go about the more mundane tasks that have built up around the Citadel. There's shopping for bling, armor, cattle, talk of crafting a ceremonial set of dragon-hide leather for Commander Palance, and catching up on relationships with the officers, recruits, and retainers that make the Fist function.

Nikolai has been doing his job as thumb, and now comes to the least pleasant part. He searches for Commander Palance in her office, but doesn't find her there. Asking around with her pages, he eventually comes to find that she is in contemplation on a bench outside the chapel.

It was only a matter of time, right? I guess I've had enough of a chance to recover. Back to business, right!?

She still looks a bit strained. As much as Nikolai is concerned, Palance is probably moreso regarding her own role in these matters.

If one thing is to be learned, don't let anyone patrol by themselves, even if you think you're not straying far enough from the walls of the Citadel to be in danger. If only I'd had backup, this whole mess could have been avoided.

It was one day beyond the walls, I was out to enjoy to fresh air and sunshine. There was an attractive young man out as well. I didn't think much of it, but he seemed harmless enough, and quite charming. Little did I know, this was really the Dragon in disguise. He beguiled me, with his natural wiles, and then magical compulsion. We kept meeting in secret while he learned more and more about me and the Agents in particular. It seems that even I didn't know more much stronger you had grown. Lucky thing too, or likely he would have waited until he had more overwhelming forces at his disposal.

The time in the dungeon is mostly a blur though.
