Mak counted some things on his fingers and after some brain work decided he'd miscalculated in his explainology for certain. "Yes, I guess you are correct. See this one here." he said pointing at one on the edge of the target. "hit, but you get no points for it. Shall we start over?"

OOC: Duh. 0-5 instead of 1-6. Stupid integers. LOL!

Mak took the daggers and threw them again. The first two hit solidly in the center and the last at the edge of the target. As for the other two Mak spent some time rummaging through the bushes to find the ones he must have just thrown over his shoulder rather than at the target.

OOC: 11 points, round two...and 2 fumbles. argh!

Welcome Back to the Wold - we now return you to your regular programming.
-----------------------------------------

The Petals join the fauns in some target practice. The Petals decide on throwing daggers.
Rolth and Mak both make a good showing.
Rolth even composes a celebratory song!

The fauns take a stab at throwing daggers, but they’re not nearly as good as the Petals. Still, they do their best.

”Wow. Yer pretty good with a blade there Mak.”
“Yeah, I sure don’t wanna be on the receiving end!”
“Rolth, nice song.”
“Hey, you guys are all fun. You should stay with us - we could have a great time!”
“Yeah. We could maybe find some women folk. Maybe some nymphs or dryads!”
“Yeah, that’s sumpthin missing here.”
“Hey Falco - beggin your pardon, but are you a, er, a boy or a girl? I jus haven’t met an owl-person before.”
“Dude - you can’t ask that! What’s wrong with you!”
“Mebbe we could even find a filly for ol’ Kiwina here."
“Or a stallion - we don’t judge.”
“Anyway, you should stay with us!”

Falco is thrilled by the festive feel of things. It is almost enough to bring back that lost halfling since of whimsey. As the fauns start to throw he cast Guidance on them to help improve their aim and to add to the fun. Occasionally he will cast light on one of the thrown knives as well.

"Daggers aren't really my thing, old bean." Mak admitted to Rolth and crew. "I'm surprised I did as well as I did, but I was taking my time. You seemed to rush through it. Still it has to be a good amount of luck that guided my hand."

As Falco messed with his daggers Mak play growled and let loose with a friendly Argh! as needed. When it was over Mak carefully placed the five cleaned daggers in sheaths at his waist. He wanted to be ready if he ran out of arrows.

At the invitation to stay, Mak replied. "I don't think we can stay." he said with emphasis on the word can. "We are expected back and people are counting on us and truly we should tell others about this tragedy and get it sorted so other lakes aren't spoiled with the bodies of the dead. I am not the senior member here so our course will be decided upon by others, perhaps Captain Kiwina, or Rolth."

Kiwina is well rested, and ready to move on -- checking to make sure they haven't missed any clan members, and taking word of what they've found back to Chessford.

DM Mark - Decisions
Tuesday January 5th, 2021 12:56:35 AM

Falco has a bit of fun helping the fauns in the dagger throwing. They fauns encourage his help, knowing they need it to beat a hero like Mak.
Having won the dagger throwing contest, Mak collects his blades. He tells the fauns that the Petals cannot stay.
Tsak too is ready to go, thinking fondly of a proper bed.
Elyas agrees the Petals should leave and get work to the Council.
Rolth asks the fauns for help finding any refugee clan members.
Kiwina is well rested and ready to move onward to Chessford.

Indeed, this rest here with the fauns has been restorative to everyone. They seem pleasant enough, restless and active with a pretty short attention span. But they are fun to hang out with.

The fauns respond to Rolth’s question about any clan members.

”Huh. Where would they be? I dunno. Cael, Tar - what do you guys think.”
“Hmm. I know some places we should check Byrn. But what if they’re crazy like the ones here?”
“Yeah - you mentioned them amulets. What if they got ‘em too?”
“I know you’re headed back, but looking for liontaurs wouldn’t take more than a day or three.”
“We need some more wine.”
“Hey, can we see the amulets? Me and Tar wanted to see what they look like, maybe even try one on.”
“What about that ol hermit guy. He might know.”
“Oooo, look! A squirrel!”
“Chesmu knows this area pretty well. But he’s pretty grouchy, and he’s prolly still sore about the last time.”
“Yeah, on second thought let’s skip that guy. He can’t take a joke.”
“Byrn, that was pretty stupid to make a joke about his dead wife.”
“Nah, I know some places we could check. If the hell hounds didn’t get em first.”
“Well, I’m not poking around for them without you Petals. A guy could get killed by crazy liontaurs. Or hell hounds. Or crazy liontaurs and hell hounds.
“We could look where we saw them berries. And we could get some berries. And if these guys are with us we wouldn’t have to worry about the hell hounds.”
“That cloud kinda looks like Falco. Look Falco, that looks like you.”
"Hey Tsak, what kinda cat is Esmerelda anyway?"

So the Petals have some options - Do you return straight away to Chessford, which would take about three or four days travel? Do you take the time to stop by and talk to Chesmu the hermit and ask what he thinks, which might add a half a day? Do you spend a day or three investigating places the fauns think some frightened liontaurs might hide?

Rolth Niheow (BatMark) (57/57 HP | AC: 16; Touch: 12; CMD: 23)
Tuesday January 5th, 2021 6:39:15 AM

Rolth suggests that the party spend a day looking for signs of living taurs. If we find some, we can have them look for more in turn Then let's swing by Chesmu's residence on the way to Chessford, to let him know what we found.

Mak(JamesM)(54/54)HP|AC:26(AO)/22/15T/17FF|CMD 25|Dagger|12/7/-/-/-|(PBS )**|1d4 + 4|Crit x2

Mak agreed that seaching for the missing taurs was a good idea, as well as touching base with Chesmu. He also wanted to revisit the village to make certain no one wandered back into the community and needed aid. Maybe even look for places people could hide and perhaps refortify his flask and skin if there was time.

DM Mark - "Spending the day searching will not delay over much and could save a life."
Wednesday January 6th, 2021 1:08:50 AM

There is some discussion about what to do. The Petals decide to spend a day or so searching for any refugee liontaurs.

Byrn, Tar and Cael are happy with this decision, but you suspect it’s more because they can spend more time with the Petals than any real concern for finding the missing. They play music and sing songs as you go. The Petals find they have to keep the fauns on task as they’re often distracted by some passing animal or a full bush of berries or a really great spot to dig some roots. On the plus side, you the fauns have gathered a lot of food for you all.

Or at least it seemed like a lot at first.

The fauns take you all to some good locations to check - they definitely know the area well. For starters, Kiwina locates a family of four in a small hollow by a dry creek - two adults and two liontaur cubs. The father is ready to attack at first, but he drops his guard quickly once he knows you are not a threat. The mother is badly wounded and near death. And all are very hungry.

The children seem very interested in Esmerelda.

I would like everyone to roll either a Survival Check OR a Knowledge Nature Check, even if you don’t have much in the way of adds. One roll each please.

Encouraged by this rescue, Rolth advocates for continuing the search ourselves as well, and will call out in the liontaur tongue as we go, hoping to reassure any who we might come upon.

Good job on the rolls.

Rolth locates two liontaurs - young adults by the look of it. They run to Rolth when they see him. These are Fowhy and Aelo.

Falco heals the woman that was injured. She’s still hurt, but much better now, and Falco knows she’ll be fine with time. He learns the father is Fawynth and the mother is Nonowla.

Mak spots some smoke in the distance and he leads the Petals to a female liontaur. She has seven liontaur children with her, and you realize only two are actually her children. She tries to keep a stern face and brandishes a spear, but suddenly bursts into tears as Mak and the others approach peacefully. Her name is Sowsael and she runs to Mak and wraps her arms around him, sobbing.

Elyas thinks he sees some tracks, and just as he rounds a bend to see what’s there he is struck by a rock for 3 points of damage! A scrawny male liontaur is quick to apologize when he sees that the party means no harm. He seems to have some mundane healing skill as he carefully examines the wound he inflicted. His name is Zarf.

As evening nears, with the others in tow Kiwina hears some yelling and a scream and he charges forward. He outpaces the others and sees a adolescent male with a spear holding off a snarling Hellhound. Behind him is a young girl, screaming and crying. The boy has a burned arm and chest as he faces down the snarling Hellhound. A second Hellhound shows up and begins running toward Kiwina.

The one Hellhound is 15 feet from the children, and Kiwina is 40 feet from them all. The Hellhound bounding toward Kiwina is 40 feet from the Centaur in another direction. The rest of the party is 130 feet away from Kiwina and the incoming Hellhound.

The fauns have been helping care for the others, even trying to lighten the mood with some food and music. They look wide-eyed and get out their bows.

Later when they found the children Mak loosed three arrows at the hell hound threatening them. Mak's arrows flew in rapid succession as the second of the two struck home. The other two landed harmlessly on the rocks to either side of the hellhound. Mak hoped that the two hellhounds would feel outnumbered and flee as he didn't want a protracted battle happening around the children.

Falco sprints forward, knowing a healer will be needed - moves 60 feet, so 70 feet away now.
Kiwina heroically moves up to draw attention away from the children and skewers the hellhound, ignoring the other one bearing down on him.
Mak shoots, hitting the same one Kiwina struck - 130 feet away.
Rolth moves up 50 feet as he bellows out an inspiring song to aid his friends (adding +1 to hit and damage.) 80 feet away.
Tsak moves up 30 feet and readies his bow as Esmerelda seems to sense the real worry and runs toward the children. Tsak 100 feet away, Esmerelda 30 feet away.

The first hellhound seems a bit caught off guard by Kwina’s attack and Mak’s arrow. He lunges to attack Kiwina but at the last moment it reflexively bites at Mak’s arrow sticking out of its side. The second hellhound reaches Kiwina and bites him. The bite burns as he does so, and Kiwina takes 9 points from the bite and an additional 1 point of damage from fire.

Kiwina faces two nasty looking dogs with glowing red eyes.

The boy liontaur backs up from the fight a bit, shielding the girl behind him. As Rolth begins to sing, the children are also bolstered by his voice. The boy throws the little girl on his back and begins to move in Rolth’s direction away from the fight - 10 feet away.

Falco moves up another 60 feet. He’s actually able to get to the two kids. He can see that the boy is pretty badly injured and struggles to move carrying the younger girl.
Kiwina attacks the first hellhound, hitting it three times. It falls dead.
Mak sees the first one fall and shoots at the second, hitting it once.
Elyas gestures and as he thrusts his hands forward, four bolts of force spring from his fingertips and unerringly hit the beast.
Rolth runs and pounces on the second liontaur, killing it very, very dead. Rolth stands amidst a shredded pool of what used to be a hellhound.
Tsak sinks a bolt in the first hellhound making sure it’s dead. Esmerelda guards the children along with Falco.

The fauns lower their bows and scan the area, looking for more hellhounds. They’re kind of in awe of the Petals. ”Whoa. You guys are … tough.”

The liontaur boy slumps to the ground, though still guarding his sister. ”Ugh, thank you, thank you, you saved our lives! His sister stares wide-eyed at the Petals, still hugging her brother.

The tauress Sowsael draws close. ”Why, I know those two. That’s Seovyo and his sister Rena. Praise the powers, they’re alive. Come over here you two. Are … do you know what became of your parents?” The boy is too exhausted to answer.

DM Mark - Lots of Found Liontaurs
Tuesday January 12th, 2021 1:28:37 AM

Rolth introduces the Petals to the children and the others, asking if they know where more of their clan may be hiding.
Mak looks at the hollow where the two were found. He can see that they were using it for a shelter of sorts, but there are no hidden taurs there.
Elyas calls out loudly for any other taurs to come out.
Falco channels energy when the taurs and his friends are gathered, healing all there.
Tsak searches the area. He looks for a place for an encampment for this large group, and prepares to set a watch.
Kiwina is glad for the refugees they have found, but sad there are not more. He asks the taurs what has happened and if there are others.

Falco’s healing is welcome. And needed. Seovyo’s injuries are pretty much healed at that point, but he was badly injured. Others are glad to have cuts and scrapes disappear. The taurs seem rather fascinated by the little owlman.

Rolth is a welcome sight, and is praised for his attack. Fowhy and Aelo are pretty big fans right now.

Esmerelda is a bit of a curiosity - the taurs seem unfamiliar with having a wild animal around as a pet, and they ask Tsak about this.

They seem a little wary of Kiwina, and the Petals recall that they only saw centaurs on this isle in the port areas acting as merchants. They are probably rare this far inland. They also hold him in some awe for his headlong charge to save the two children.

Zarf seems to stick close to Elyas, wanting to help but still feeling guilty for hitting him with a stone when they first met. Zarf tends to wounds or sprains here and there. He notices Mak’s limp and asks him about that, and if it’s an old or new injury.

The fauns move among the taurs there, doing what they can to help. Mostly folks here need some food and some secure rest. Evening approaches. The fauns seem a bit unsure what to do, so they start by playing a tune and singing. They also do what they can to gather some food and get a fire going. The scrawny Zarf seems to know the land well, and is also adept at locating eatable plants and herbs.

You learn that a taur from the clan found a strange amulet. He left for a time, but returned with more. Soon, there was a zealous madness that seem to spread amongst the clan. Some disagreements and infighting occured. Many were driven to seek the coast. There was a terrible fight one night. Those here fled into the night as taur slew taur. It was awful. They say there may be more, but they are not hopeful. They are also fearful that some of the mad taurs may return for them.

The evening is cold, but the fire is warm. The feeling here is … much better than you would think. There is some conversation among the taurs, sadness for the losses but some encouraging of spirits with the found kinsfolk.

And the Petals are definitely the celebrated heroes here. The taurs ask why they are here and what they know of what happened.

The night passes without event. The day dawns, cloudy at first but soon gives way to sun peeking through.

Elyas is still nervous about bringing a collection of such amulets into a populated area, but he can at least understand the reasoning of the other petals.

once everyone is ready, he asks the fauns and the taurs they met "where do you plan on going? will you travel with us, or go back to rebuild your homes?

Tsak explained as best he could that Esmerelda was a companion, much like the rest of the petals, and not a pet.
The ranger himself doesn't really understand their relationship, so he's not sure if what he says makes much sense.
He otherwise makes himself useful around camp, collecting firewood and water and searching for food. He extracts as much dried meat as he can from his handy dandy pack and distributes it amongst the hungry taurs.

Esmerelda revels in the attention she receives before settling down for a long sleep during the night.

I'm sorry to say that I think the taurs that came under the amulets' influence are probably all dead and gone. There is a new, evil power abroad in the Wold that thrives on abominations, and corrupts the minds and bodies of those that fall under its sway. It is called the Deep, and even Nantyr fell to its power. We destroyed the local leader of this sick cult, but were too late to save your fellow villagers. We put those that we found to rest, so that is some comfort, I hope. But now we must look forward, and rebuild from this tragedy. We will soon be returning to the Council, and reporting what happened here, so perhaps they will also be able to provide some assistance to the village. And of course, Cheshmu and his spirit companion remain, and may be able to help as well. What say you?"

DM Mark - Decisions
Wednesday January 13th, 2021 1:00:25 AM

Mak gets some quizzical looks as the runs through a song several times, but eventually he nails it and is greeted with applause by those there. Even his initial attempts hold their attention. In the morning he shares what food he has, hoping to get more soon.
Falco does his best to entertain those interested in him. Being an owl was new to him not that long ago, so he understands the novelty. The children especially seem to take to him - maybe because he’s more their size.
Elyas wonders about the amulets the party carries. He asks the taurs and fauns what they will do and where they will go.
Tsak and Esmerelda are both pleased to entertain and care for the taurs, and he shares what rations he has with him.
Rolth explains what the Petals found and what they think may be behind the amulets. He tells them they must report back to the Council, whom they hope may send some aid, and that Chesmu may be willing to help as well. He proposes making one last look for survivors before taking them back to their abandoned village.
Kiwina adds to the explanation and helps with the search.

The taurs and the fauns listen intently. There are some tears here and there for the lost. Byrn hands Tar a handkerchief.

As the Petals search a bit further, the taurs help. You will find another four liontaurs in hiding. Some are in need of a bit of healing, and then you all head to the abandoned village. You can see Chesmu’s hut in the distance, a thin wisp of smoke curling up from the chimney.

The village is a mess. There are some food stuffs here, and even a few animals that are rounded up and brought back. You’re not sure if this little rag-tag group is enough to defend the place if any hellhounds show up. They also find some foodstuffs in some of the houses - cheese, preserved meats, pickled vegetables. The garden plots have some things to eat as well. There is plenty of food to reprovision the Petals and supply this small group of liontaurs for a while.

This village had well over a hundred folk, and you now see about a dozen. They seem both relieved and nervous about being back with so few in a large village, and they seem to look to the Petals for guidance. While they seem willing to stay, you can tell it wouldn’t take much convincing for them to go with you to Chessford. And what about the hut in the distance - do you bring Chesmu into the picture or let him be?

Do you venture on? Do you take the liontaurs with you, or leave them here? Going will be slower with them in tow, but it could be done.

Even the three fauns seem pretty differential to the Petals, ready to accompany them wherever they go.

"What if there are remnants of the deep here?" Mak said once they were out of earshot of the taurs. "They look like they could barely hold off a hellhound attack, not to mention some mind bending amulet abomination blokes. I think we should try to bring them with us to Chessford. Maybe the leaders there can bring them back with a force large enough repopulate the village."

Mak was also aware that taking anything would have an impact on the taurs survival so he made certain to pay for anything he picked up to resupply, arrows, wine, ale, some mead, a few more arrows, rations, and a horse if one was here. He paid the eldest of the surviving taurs for these items to divide however they wished.

OOC: That's hopefully, 60 arrows, a small cask of each beverage, and enough rations to make it back to Chessford (however many days it would take).

Tsak agrees that Chesmu should be visited and made aware of what has happened and the current situation.

He then looks around town (Perception) for carts or livestock that will help in transporting the young or elderly as well as transporting provisions for 20 people on a trip back to the big smoke. He looks for containers to carry water and food supplies as well as bedding and shelter materials. He's not sure how long it will take but, even though these people are probably used to travelling light over long distances, it will take longer than it took the Petals to get here.

Naively assuming that common sense will rule he leaves the discussion and negotiation to others and just goes about the task of preparing to move out.

DM Mark - Decisions  d20=15 ;

Mak is worried about leaving the taurs here. He looks around, and is able to scrounge up some supplies. (There are no arrows that will work well for his bow, but the fauns probably possess the ability to get them in shape quickly.)
Elyas is also against leaving the taurs here.
Kiwina thinks the taurs and Chesmu should decide if they’re able to stay. He’ll ask the Council to send aid if they decide to stay.
Rolth thinks it’s not safe for the taurs to stay, and wants to talk to Chesmu. Perhaps this would be a good place for a minotaur settlement.
Tsak is also for talking to Chesmu about this. Anticipating a trip back with refugees, he starts looking around for supplies and vehicles for travel.

Tsak finds a few farm carts, but there are no oxen or other beasts in sight. There are signs that they had domesticated beasts. They couldn’t have gone far though.

Some of the taurs aren’t quite sure what to do with themselves, but most set to getting a few houses in order. The father mother, Fawynth and Nonowla, start directing people to activities. The woman with the woman with the seven - no, now it’s nine - children has her hands full, but she wastes no time putting them to tasks to keep them busy and occupied. This has the makings of a taur orphanage. Still, she could use some help.

Some of you approach Chesmu’s hut (you can all decide who us there.) A few taurs came with you as well, including Zarf. Rolth knocks on the rough door, and after a bit it opens.

”What? What’s all this? Oh. It’s you lot. And you have some taurs with you. Well now, that’s something. And Zarf - good to see you boy. And…

“HEY YOU ROTTEN FAUNS! GET OUTTA HERE OR’N I’LL BRAIN YOU!”
He shakes a cudgel at them and they move back to the village in the distance. As they go you hear Tar say, ”Yep, you were right Cael, he’s still sore.”

Chesmu says, “You best keep an eye on those fauns. They can be trouble. But here now, you’ve all come to me. How can I help. Sit down, sit down. I’ll get some beer.” There’s nothing to sit on but the ground, which is usual for liontaurs.

Chesmu goes in his hut and returns with some homebrewed beer. It’s not bad, but not great. He has some horn cups and some clay ones. He asks what you know, what you want, and what you plan to do with these people? If you mention the amulets, he asks to see them as does Zarf. He asks what you’re keeping them for.

Apparently this whole business with the entire village deserting their homes and then being corrupted by The Deep was started by a single amulet being found by one of the locals. we will be doing our best to avoid that happening again.

Elyas had argued against keeping the amulets, but now that the decision has been made he will back the plan, at least until a better one can be made.

Kiwina thinks some of the amulets had no magical power, and suggests talking to Chitto.
Tsak empties his cup of beer, wanting more.

The beer is pretty good. Those that drink it note that it’s been infused with some herbs including juniper berries. Being a homebrew in such a place, it’s not cold and it is a bit flat but the taste is nice and it does have an alcoholic kick.

Chesmu listens to all this. ”Ach. Evil priests and mind bending amulets - that’s a bad business. So this is all that’s left of the Houndstooth Clan, eh? I’ll keep an eye out for any more survivors. Perhaps my wife’s spirit knows more - I shall ask her tonight, if she’s willing.”

Chesmu is a bit of a curmudgeon, particularly when it comes to the other liontaurs, but you can see he is saddened by the losses and it does soften his hard edge. He seems to have a decent relationship with Zarf, talking about herbs and medicines with the young taur, and offering Zarf suggestions of what might be most needed right now.

And you can all have more beer if you wish. There is plenty for the Petals to do, either to prepare the villagers for travel or to help them fortify their homes here - that decision will be up to the Petals. Survival rolls are in order to see how well you prepare these taurs for either task.

Assuming you all stay the night, Chesmu will run off the other taurs - and definitely the fauns - but he will allow Zarf to stay. As before, the evening turns to night.

”My Chitto has a connection to this place, to the land. She … may be able to answer a few questions for you. But you’ll have to wait for her to appear.”

As before, late into the night there is a glow that coalesses into the form of a young female taur. The form smiles at Chesmu. You see something quite foreign on Chesmu’s face - it’s a tender smile. ”Chitto, these goodly folk have done a good thing, a great kindness to Nantyr’s clan. Most have died, but they have saved a few. They destroyed a great evil. I think they hope you can answer some questions.”

The ghostly face turns to you. You see kindness in her eyes. You may ask her three questions. (This is similar to Commune with Nature.)

Kiwina thinks that Chesmu and Chitto are saying she can tell the group a few things about what's happening in the area -- such as whether there are other people or unnatural monsters nearby. He suggests that if she is able to detect the presence of the Deep -- and she might remember what that felt like when the amulets were in town -- then asking whether she feels its presence might be one of the questions. Other liontaurs might be another, although he's not sure how far she can see. And, of course, powerful and dangerous-to-liontaur creatures could be the third. He looks to Rolth to add his two coppers.

Once the questions have been answered and the Petals have talked with the locals about whether to stay or go, Kiwina will pitch in to help. He doubts they will convince Chesmu to leave without force, though, if Chitto is tied to this place.

DM Mark - Chitto
Monday January 18th, 2021 1:30:51 AM

Mak leaves the questioning to others, turning his thoughts to the safety of the few remaining in the Houndstooth Clan.
Falco is respectful to the ghostly Chitto, but asks no questions of her.
Kiwina has some thoughts on what might be asked of Chitto, and turns his thoughts to preparing the clan survivors.
Elyas agrees with Kiwina’s questions, as do Rolth and Tsak.

The questions (I think) Kiwina is asking are:

Q: ”Does she still feel the presence of the Deep as perhaps she did when the amulets were here?”
A: “A thing in the grotto that strengthened the amulets is gone. They are still connected to...something, but it is not as strong. And even now the chaos recedes, it’s power fading.”

Q: “Are there other members of the Houndstooth Clan still out there?”
A: “A few have fled back to Chessford or to other clans. There remains a family of 5 though that is hiding near the old snag at the top of Skygrass Hill.”

Q: “Are there powerful creatures nearby that pose a threat to liontaurs.”
A: “The threat of hellhounds is prevalent on this isle but none remain nearby at present, having been killed by either the ghouls or by you heroes. Still, the wilds of the isle can be a threat in many ways.”

She turns to Chesmu, as her ghostly hand brushes his cheek. ”I have come as you asked. I cannot help more, and even this is … I feel the remnants of the love we had. Perhaps one day, one day....” And with that, she fades from sight.

It is late, and you are very tired. Chesmu’s hut is too small for you all to sleep there, but there are liontaur houses unoccupied not far away. The night is dark but a little light will guide you back to the village over the uneven terrain here.

What do you do - do you talk to Chesmu more, do you find a place to sleep?

Elyas thanks Chesmu warmly before heading back towards the village to find a roof to sleep under. he will use light cast on his dagger to lead the way back to the buildings for anyone else who is headed back

Well that was helpful. obviously we should help find the last family, bur then again if some of the taurs are planning on staying here maybe they can go find the family while we head back to Chessford. if others have alreafy fled back to the city perhaps some word of what has happened here has already been relayed.

Elyas is trying to sound hopeful, but deep down he is afraid that a scattering of the townsfolk is actually a bad sign. who knows if ay of them happened to have an amulet whispering in their mind as they travelled? could the Deep Ones already be getting a foothold in Chessford? Elyas wants to hurry back, but he knows that rushing his allies doesn't usually work.

Rolth Niheow (BatMark) (57/57 HP | AC: 16; Touch: 12; CMD: 23)
Monday January 18th, 2021 8:54:19 PM

Rolth is alarmed by Elyas' suggestion that missing villagers might have taken back an amulet to Chessford. He hadn't even thought of that, and is impressed with Elyas' thinking on the matter. However, he is torn, because he feels a deep need to rescue the last of the missing villagers. He reasons that any who already went back to the capital have been there for some time, so it is too late to stop them before they might do at least some harm. As a compromise between these two conflicting needs, he proposes that we quickly find and return the last family nearby, then set off for Chessford without the remaining villagers. We can travel faster without such a large group, as fleet as the taurs are. Chitto has indicated no major threats are in the area, and there are several able-bodied adults here that can protect the rest for a short time. We can send help from Chessford once we get there. Rolth will remain with Chesmu and Zarf for a little while after the others have left, feeling that this is one more opportunity for him to deepen his bond with his home isle and its natives.

DM Mark - What now?
Tuesday January 19th, 2021 1:42:27 AM

Elyas casts light on a dagger, ready to return to the village to rest. He is all for helping find the missing family, but suggests the other taurs may go search for them while the Petals make haste to report back to Chessford, thinking perhaps a fleeing taur may have taken an amulet there.
Falco is worried that sending the taurs after this family may put them at risk from a hellhound attack.
Tsak gets directions to Skygrass Hill before returning to the village to sleep. He suggests the Petals find this missing family in the morning and then call a meeting of the remaining clan members to see if they will stay or return to Chessford with the Petals.
Kiwina learns it’s about a couple hour hike to Skygrass Hill from here.
Rolth is also worried about an errant amulet making its way back to Chessford. He wants to find this family and then make haste back to Chessford without refugees in tow to make better time. He lingers with Chesmu and Zarf for a while, and has a nice time with fellow liontaurs before he and Zarf make their way back to the village. Zarf knows the area pretty well, and the make their way back to the village easily in the darkness.

In the morning, the Petals wake to a lead grey sky that suggests rain, but they need to coalesce on a plan. Go after this family? Direct these liontaurs to do that? Hold a village meeting? Leave the liontaurs or bring them to Chessford?

Mak had been in thought last night during the questioning, but when the subject about collecting the family of five was broached Mak suggested. "Is there a signaling device here, a gong or horn perhaps that if sounded might draw the liontaurs in the countryside back to the village? Maybe even draw them out once we get close so we don't have to search for very long?"

As for the rain, Mak could feel it coming as his leg had cramped in the night. "rains coming." he grunted as he rolled over and rubbed it vigorously.

"We need to get these villagers sorted. I'm with Rolth about the urgency to get back to Chessford.

DM Mark - Travel?
Wednesday January 20th, 2021 1:34:44 AM

Mak wakes in the morning. His leg aches from an old wound as he thinks about their situation. He asks around for some sort of loud device that could call the lost liontaur family to allow a faster return to Chessford.
Elyas is also in favor of moving out to Chessford without the liontaurs in tow.
Rolth tries to convince these remaining clan members to seek out this family.
Kiwina is worried about this plan, but tries to size up the liontaurs here to see if they are organized and able to find these missing ones on their own.

These refugees seem fairly industrious. They are up much earlier than the Petals would like, given their late night with Chesmu and Chitto’s ghost. They have rounded up a few goats and pigs, and put the children to work gathering and feeding some chickens. The work seems to give them purpose and seems rather helpful for even the most traumatized ones.

Kiwina’s sense is that there are too few to make a strong community here, but they seem to be a strong enough group to defend themselves here in their stone houses and feed everyone if they pull together. Kiwina thinks they can probably organize themselves enough to seek out the missing family.

As a skilled orator, Rolth encourages them in this. He is met with positive responses. The scrawny youth Zarf may not be a mighty warrior, but he is wise and capable liontaur with a good read on the land and the folk here. He says he knows where the snag is on Skyglass hill. He picks out three other liontaurs that agree to go with them. They gather up some weapons and head upland.

The Petals do spend a couple hours bolstering spirits and suggesting repairs and improvements here. They are saddened to see how few liontaurs are here now given the number of homes spread out here. There are no guarantees this group will survive on their own, but they stand a good chance.

There are sufficient provisions here in some of the abandoned houses to provide food for the Petals. The fauns are hungry too, but defer to the Petals before raising any houses. They have no interest in going to Chessford, but would travel with the Petals for a ways. You also think you can direct them to stay here and help if you wish, but you’re not sure how long they’d stay here or really how focused they’ll be on helping for long.

Satisfied they have dones what they can, the Petals head out, with or without the fauns. It rains much of the day, so you can stay another day and hope for better weather.

If you do head out, it’s pretty wet. You are looking at a couple days of travel back to Chessford. The first day will pass without event. Night falls and you will need to camp. What preparations do you make?

Mak limped along in the rain as he came alongside Rolth. "Perhaps if the fauns could return to the lake and keep watch there in case members of the deep return? It might serve a dual purpose if they do so." Mak suggested.

Otherwise Mak kept a sharp lookout ahead and to the side for danger.

Though the fauns presence had aided them greatly and had been a boon during that first night out of the waterways beneath the waterfall, their presence since had to Mak been a liability. Creatures that were unfortunately drawn into the conflict that might not be able to fully care for themselves and as such distract the petals in battle. Mak dearly wanted them to return home, watching their home for a return of the Deep would simply be a bonus as they'd provide an early warning should the Deep decide they weren't finished with that part of the isle.

Of course, Mak couldn't discuss this in front of them as he didn't want to offend the fey creatures. But in reality having their eyes in a place where they needed a watch had a value all it's own. Explaining it to them....well that would be on Rolth and Kiwina he thought. He only hoped those two caught his double meaning as Falco had.

DM Mark - Sounds in the Night
Thursday January 21st, 2021 1:47:20 AM

Mak suggests the fauns might best help by keeping an eye on the lake outside the grotto. He considers how less skilled creatures can be a liability and can distract the Petals in battle.
Falco agrees with having the fauns watch the lake. As he travels, he thinks about how much downtime is involved in the adventuring life, and how much he has grown to appreciate that fact.
Rolth agrees, and the asks the fauns if they will keep an eye on the lake, waterfall, and surroundings for any signs of the return of evil, and to report back if there is trouble.
Kiwina chimes in, reminding the fauns that the Petals are counting on them to be the scouts and not the army.
Tsak is glad to have the taurs remain. The thought of taking them all back to Chessford, especially with those children in tow, well, that would have been a chore the ranger did not want. He makes sure the taurs are aware of the supplies and materials he had found.

The fauns listen to the Petals and their charge to the fey to keep watch at the lake at the grotto. The seem to take this seriously. Mostly. Except for Bryn who gets distracted by one of the liontaur children he seems to have made friends with.

”Watch the lake and stuff. Got it!”
“And report back. We’re important.”
“Yeah, ‘cept for you Tar. You’re not important, you're impotent.”
“Heh, that’s not what your sister said Bryn.”
“I … I don’t have a sister.”
“Hey, would you guys shuddup and listen! We have a job to do.”

A quick look reveals a much better location. The trees block sight, but the elevation would be much safer.

A short, simple climb gives you a camping spot just big enough for your group and a fire if you wish.

"Were we expecting the fauns to do much? I just hope they warn the village if something more happens."

Kiwina feels no need to investigate in the night, as long as nothing's climbing up to them.

Rolth knows the fauns won't be much use as a patrol, but at least the seeds of the idea of keeping an eye out as they wander around are planted.

If woken by Falco or Tsak during the second watch, he'll roll over and grumble about being woken for nothing but a bunch of growling, unless of course something comes up the hill.

(Knowledge nature = 8, no idea what is down there)

When his own watch comes up, he'll make sure Mak is awake and soberish, and keep a keen eye and ear out.

DM Mark - Travel
Friday January 22nd, 2021 2:12:59 AM

Falco doesn’t put much faith in fauns’ vigilance. Later, he laments the state of his boots.
Elyas helps with camp. He lights a fire as he tells Falco he can magically repair boots.
Mak has had a long day, and his leg aches a bit from the damp and the long walk. He sleeps pretty soundly once he’s out, glad for the rest.
Kiwina and Rolth settle in. As there is some growling heard late at night, they both wake briefly and ignore the noise as it seems to pose no threat.

As the night passes, the group is disturbed by a bit of growling and scratching. It goes on for a bit. The Petals stay quiet and do not interfere, and whatever is down there eventually goes away. The rest of the night passes without incident, and everyone is pretty glad that you located this high spot to camp. Your things are reasonably dry from the soggy day before.

In the morning you prepare for another day of travel and Falco is reminded he needs new boots. The sky is a leaden grey.

As you climb back down from your perch, you can clearly see some canine tracks in the softened earth.

Survival DC 17:Highlight to display spoiler: {There are maybe about ten creatures that made these tracks. They are clearly canine quadrupeds. From the spacing and depth of the tracks and the location of the scratches on the rocks, you’d guess medium size creatures and maybe 80 to 120 pounds? This could match wolves or hellhounds.}

The day stays overcast, but you are spared rain. The day’s travel passes without incident. In hte afternoon, you pass a clan holding in the distance, maybe an hour's travel out of your way. It might mean shelter and a hot meal. (It might mean murderous ghoul liontaurs too, you just never know.) Do you go there?

If you don’t stop, you’re about a half day’s travel away from Chessford as night falls. Do you camp for the night or try to travel several more hours in the dark? That cloudy sky never went away, so it is really dark.

They were a half day out and shelter was available less than an hour away so Mak suggested they push on to the holding and hope they'd be offered a place safe to sleep the night. The detour now wouldn't make much difference the next day and they'd have the added benefit of sheltering in a safe place tonight.

"I don't like the size of those claws. A bit large to be sorted easily at night, I'd imagine." Mak commented with his strange aristocratic tone.

"Large claws and small owls, not the best combination to say the least. I am good to walk at night for a while but its up to you folks. I can see better at night then some of you."

"An hour walk in the dark to be safe the rest of the night. An easy choice for me old bean. Mak said as he limped along behind the four legged members of the group.

"If we are going to spend much more time on this island, I'm going to need a horse." Mak stated.

(survival at +17 to the roll for inspecting the claw marks)

Kiwina looks at the marks around the rock and is glad they are hours from the clan village.

As they move through the day, the lack of rain does not seem to make things less dreary, though. When night comes, he is ready to camp. Pressing on several hours in the dark does not appeal to him. But before he finalizes his decision, he looks to see how secure they can make their camp. (Survival = 36 for identifying a suitable spot)

Elyas will vote for a camping night to make sure they don't encounter something bad while walking at night, planning to arrive late morning the next day. if the others want to push on he will cast light to aid them in seeing their path.

Rolth is with Mak, let’s go to the clan hold. We can check on them, hopefully spend the night in safety, then press on in the morning.

(Perception=27, Survival vs spoiler=19)

Tsak doesn't really mind either way. His night vision is still quite good, even with the cloud cover.

There's a pack of animals about, 8-10 of them, largish dogs. Could be wolves or helllhounds, can't tell. Certainly enough of them to cause us some trouble. So do we go back to the clan holding, stay where we are, or push thru to town?

If they push on he will take point.

Actually, there's not much point walking back three hours is there, when our destination is 4 hours in front of us?
Did you see that? My cat just gave me an eye roll. Bloody attitude on it. I didn't know they could do that.

So if Kiwina can find somewhere defensible to camp we'll do that, otherwise we push on.
