DM Mark - Travel
Monday January 25th, 2021 1:16:09 AM

Mak is up for a short hike to the clan holding to stay the night in some comfort and safety.
Falco is fine even walking in the dark if it means a rest without prowling animals about.
Kiwina does not want to walk in the darkness and keeps a sharp eye out for any safe place to rest, ready to camp if needed.
Elyas likewise does not relish the idea of hiking in the dark, preferring to camp, but ready to provide magical light if others want to press on.
Rolth agrees with Mak that a hike to the clan holding is best as it might provide safe rest and perhaps some news.
Tsak stands ready to use his darvision, but is good with any decision on the matter.

In the end, it seems the general consensus is to head to the nearby clan holding. It may be a little out of the way, but a restful night may be worth a small delay.

As you approach the clan holding you see the usual liontaur homes constructed of stone. You are spotted by some liontaurs, and soon a group of about six are headed quickly in your direction.

Perception DC 17:Highlight to display spoiler: { These six are headed your way armored and with weapons in hand, spears or lances from the look of it. A few more look like they are forming up at the clan holding several hundred feet away to follow these six and to also head in your direction.}

Knowledge Nobility DC 15 or Profession Soldier DC 10:Highlight to display spoiler: { Their bearing and formation suggests they are making an aggressive approach as they come. The six split into two groups, perhaps ready to split and flank the Petals as one of the six seems to be directing the others.}

This group of six are about 100 feel off at this point. The sun has just set, but there is still plenty of light, perhaps a bit more as the light from the setting sun is below the clouds and shines on them with a warm orange glow. They are moving fast. What do you do?

Rolth agrees that parley is the way to go, especially after the Council reminded us that we aren’t here to harm the locals. He steps out ahead of the party and, hands away from his weapons, loudly announces, "We are the Eight Petaled Rose, traveling across your lands to take word back to the Council about the recent tragedy suffered by your neighbors. We come in peace, and only seek shelter for the night before we move on to the city. Will you parley?"

"Be alert, my flowery beans, THAT is not a peaceful formation." Mak said as he gripped his bow tighter. Afterall it wasn't as if he could just put the bow away, it begged to be held, or so he told himself. Still he held the greatbow loosely at his side in one hand. As the taurs split into groups so as to flank them, Mak added. "If it's any consolation, I don't recall those representing the Deep using strategic tactics such as these. Let us hope that for ill or good, these people still have their own minds and are in control of them."

Mak tried to add something that might help Rolth with his negotiations, but all he could manage was to open his mouth, forget what he was about to say, and close it again.

DM Mark - "Be alert, my flowery beans, THAT is not a peaceful formation."
Tuesday January 26th, 2021 1:17:21 AM

Tsak’s sharp eyes allow him to alert the others of what’s headed your way.
Mak’s can see the tactical approach of this front group of liontaurs and calls that out as well. He lets the Petals know this is not a peaceful envoy.
Falco and Elyas move behind the larger party members, hoping for a peaceful resolution, but ready to respond of things go south.
Rolth says, "We are the Eight Petaled Rose, traveling across your lands to take word back to the Council about the recent tragedy suffered by your neighbors. We come in peace, and only seek shelter for the night before we move on to the city. Will you parley?"
Kiwina can see that those headed in the Petals direction mean business.

None of the Petals brandish weapons or shoot at the oncoming force. This is fortuitous - probably mostly for these approaching liontaurs.

The lead group of six breaks into two groups that come toward the Petals from different angles. The Petals patiently wait for them to get in earshot. They are wary and jumpy, but Rolth’s greeting has the desired effect. The lead liontaur signals to the others, and they relax a bit. But only just a bit. They stop about 15 feet away, and Mak’s practiced eye will note they are careful to be just outside of quick melee striking range. You can see they are adorned here and there in some finery.

The lead liontaur wears armor with gold and silver trim and wears a large green gemstone necklace against his fur. He addresses you, looking down his nose a bit as he speaks. ”Greetings from the Goldmane Clan. I am Mrownsul. You say you seek the council. They are in Chessford, not here, though Tenzar Goldmane has returned here to Goldmane Hold from Chessford. Ill tidings preceed you. You seek shelter and have news for the Council. We will take you to Chief Tenzar. Come with us.”

You ask them about these “ill tidings,” but this only draws some suspicious stares and they tell you that Chief Tenzar will fill you in.

Sense Motive DC 15:Highlight to display spoiler: {Some are a bit relieved to not face a fight, but there are a couple that almost seemed disappointed. More deference and respect is given to Rolth. Kiwina is watched carefully as you go.}

The other approaching armored liontaurs fall in with the others, also keeping an eye on the Petals. As you go the tension decreases, given your non-aggressive stance. The Petal’s attempts to parly or to make small talk as you go is given little response, born more from a wariness and discipline than outright hostility.

As you approach what they refer to as Goldmane Hold, you see that it is an orderly and kept place of individual stone houses, gardens and animal barns and pens. Many liontaurs look out at you silently with a mix of apprehension and curiosity. You begin to smell wood smoke and some scents of cooking food. It makes you pretty hungry. You pass a large smithy. Work may have stopped for the day, but the acrid smell of the forge remains.

Eventually, you are brought to a central lodging, much larger than the others. A regal taur is there with a flowing golden mane, covered in adornments and sparkling jewels and gemstones held together with silver rings so as to contrast with his gold colored mane. You recognize this person as Tenzar Goldmane from your meeting with the Council. He nods to Mrownsul and regards your group for a moment before speaking.

"Greetings heroes from across the sea, messengers of the Purple Duke. You were sent to find what happened to the Houndstooth Clan and report back. Tell me, what have you found?”

There are a number of curious onlookers. There is tension in the air, a mixture of fear and expectation.

As we travel to the hold with our escort, and once we arrive before the Chief, Rolth will try to see whether any might be wearing amulets of the sort that we have associated with the deep.

(Perception = 19)

Assuming that he sees no such amulets, Rolth bows to the Chief and gives another Trader's greeting, as that seemed to go over well back in Chessford. "Chief, I'm afraid that we have discovered a calamity, one that may pose a threat to other liontaurs here on the island and other folk in the region. It seems that the Houndstooth clan had fallen under the sway of evil magic amulets, connected to a dark power called 'The Deep.' We found that most, including Nantyr, had been turned into undead or other abominations by a Chuul priest of The Deep. We were forced to destroy them, along with the altar being used to created the abominations. We did manage to find and rescue a few stragglers, no more than two dozen. Now we intend to return to Chessford to warn the Council and deliver this news. I know that you may have had some disagreements with the Houndstooth clan, but no taur deserves such a fate, and by Domi, we intend to avert this threat! Have you any tidings of events since we left? And will you provide us with safety for the night, and speed us on our way in the morn?"

Mak chatted amiably along the way as he asked about the libations available in the holding. He really wasn't looking for anyone to respond while he rambled on about the different types of ale and mead and their qualities. He commented on his favorite and asked...do you have that?

Regardless of the answer he smiled and and started to explain in depth his understanding of what made a good ale. (even if his technical knowledge was wrong). He asked about the establishments in town and who was known for what kind of beverage as he insisted on trying each.

Mak also made certain he made no threatening movements with his bow, though he doubted the taurs here knew just how effective he was with it. He couldn't help himself as he counted off the number of taurs and his estimate of arrows. "Not enough" he thought to himself which brought up another idea in his head.

"I'd really like to get some arrows, if you could direct me to a bowyer that would be capital." Mak rambled on some more.

When they arrived even Mak could feel the tension in the air as the leader asked them what they had found. Since Mak wasn't the appointed mouthpiece of the group, and for good reason, Rolth spoke up and related the events thus far. Mak did wince when Rolth mentioned the evil amulets as he might have left that detail out; at least initially.

While Rolth spoke Mak couldn't help himself as he analyzed the area while he made plans in his head should things go south.

DM Mark - A Peaceful Stay
Wednesday January 27th, 2021 1:40:28 AM

Rolth keeps an eye out for any of the weird amulets among these taurs, but sees none. He relates the tale of fate of the Houndstooth Clan, the amulets, and what you all found in the grotto behind the waterfall. He asks what news they have and if they can stay the night.
Mak asks about pubs and mead and ale and arrows. And he tries to evaluate his hosts and their capabilities.
Falco also looks around at his hosts, mostly to make sure they are not wearing the amulets.
Elyas can tell things are tense - much more than he would expect.
Kiwina is the object of a number of stares. There has often been some tension between the taur races. There is a tale of liontaurs that had a dark queen rise up to wield evil magics and who bore an evil sword, so it was often centaurs that were a bit leery of liontaurs. Maybe this is how it felt to be on the other end of that.

As you look around, there are many liontaurs that have gathered. They are a mix. There are many common folk, and many of noble stature dressed in jewels and finery. You suspect this may be one of the wealthier clans, though that wealth is not evenly distributed.

Mak can tell that there is some military discipline and hierarchy here, and those with a military bearing view Tenzar Goldmane as their head.

Tenzar Gloldmane listens to Rolth, asking questions here and there. He seems to want to know exactly where this grotto is, and commends you for destroying an altar. At the mention of the amulets he asks about these, what they are made of, what they look like, what effect they had, and if you have any. He would like to see them. Tenzar tells you that he will accompany you to Chessford in the morning as you intend to meet with the rest of the Council.

Tenzar will also tell you that there were a few Houndstooth refugees that had arrived in their clan holding. They were in a sorry state, and brought tales of some mad liontaurs that had attacked them. Tenzar saw that they had food and rest and then sent them on to them to Chessford.

You don’t need much of a Sense Motive skill to know that he is a haughty person, and is a bit dismissive as he speaks of these refugees. You can also tell that their tale caused some stir among this clan - hence the tense greeting. The Petals’ tale seems to rattle him and the other liontaurs here a bit more.

He will provide a stone guest house. He asks that you not wander about the community without an escort, and will assign some soldiers to act as guides (and probably keep an eye on you all as well.)

The stay is pleasant enough. You will be brought food if you do not wish to go out. The guards with you will take where you wish to go. There are a couple pubs, and while most shops are closed the guards know the locals and can easily arrange for sellers to provide whatever mundane goods you want. They are not forced to comply with this, but do so willingly.

Tell me how you deal with these guards, merchants and locals. Everyone make a Diplomacy, Profession Soldier, or Knowledge Nobility roll. If there are other social type rolls you want to make, please do so and clarify what your intent is with these rolls.

Rolth thanks the chief for his hospitality, and for the aid given to the Houndstooth refugees. He will warn against bringing out the amulets, noting that they have the ability to potentially affect even strong minded folk, and the Petals would not like to see a calamity befall this proud clan, as has happened elsewhere. If the Chief nevertheless insists, Rolth will bring out only one of the non-magical ones that we kept for potential use as a disguise.

Once we are dismissed, Rolth would like to tour the clan hold, to learn more of the ways of his people. He will express appreciation to his guides, and his admiration of their prosperity and organization, while listening for news that might be of interest.

There was no other way to put it. Mak intended to get his jailors drunk, so the offer to do a proper pub crawl was on his list of things to do. First though he wanted to talk to the others and in the relative privacy of their quarters he offered up his opinions on the holding.

"Seems your people aren't much different than those minotaurs, old bean. I do think the urgency isn't as great now to return to Chessford and we should be able to take our time. I suspect we'll have an escort into the city in the morning, I'd certainly have us sorted that way to assure news of our exploits get to the council, if they haven't sent a patrol out tonight to tell them that is. Not surprised if they do." Mak oiled his bow and undid the tension on the string to let it dry over night even as he tightened the cinch on his belt.

"I'm off with my "escort"" Mak admitted as he turned and exited the building.

"Come along you ferocious looking guardsmen, we have a pub to crawl.

Along the way..

"You have any extra arrows?"
"A bowyer I can get some from?"
"I'm looking for a composite shortbow, seen any?"
"A horse would be nice, I've a little gold about me."
"You always escort the likes of me about, it must be BORING."
"You guys ever been in a battle...no I mean a really BIG battle?" Mak said as he slapped his leg. "That's what caused this."
"By the way...Kiwina is exceptionally grouchy in the morning and he casts spells. I don't want to be turned into a neut." Mak added sagely.

As he went along he looked unsuccessfully with his untrained eye at the architecture of the place and how defensible it might be. He also looked for signs of people acting strangely.

Mak entered the first pub with no intention to visit the second and plopped one hundred gold down on the bar as he ordered one for each of them, himself and his guards. He used his slickest amount of peer pressure to entice them into joining him as he started to ply them for information.

Mak is looking for information about how the holding might plan to deal with the Deep and what they've already done prior to the petals getting here. He'd also want to confirm his theory that a patrol would be sent ahead to Chessford with news.

He did not grow up worrying about events long-gone, and isn't going to start now. Nor, for that matter, did he grow up among wealth. Perhaps that, too, affects the attitudes of the wemics.

Still, as Kiwina listens to Tenzar and forms opinions he isn't about to speak his mind about the refugees. "I am not an artist, but the amulets had an unsettling look to them." In the dirt, he tries to sketch an amulet that appears to be tentacles as if they were rising up to choke the wearer, and encourages the other Petals to improve the result.

Kiwina is happy to stay in the guest house with what food is offered. He has no need to wander about, and can avoid some of the nearly raw meats that the liontaurs favored in Chessford without causing offense. He doesn't eat while they're about in the evening, but travels with the others as they're escorted around and isn't shy with the drinks Mak pays for.

DM Mark - A Peaceful Stay
Thursday January 28th, 2021 1:50:23 AM

Rolth thanks Chief Tenzar for his hospitality, but refuses to show him the magical amulets. When pressed, he does show him a non-magical one though.
Mak decides he wants to take his escort out drinking, and at the first bar he drops 100 gp on the table. He also asks about buying some arrows, a bow and a horse as he tries to ferret information out of his guards.
Falco likewise tries to get information out of the guards, but tires a more measured approach.
Elyas warns about the dangers of the amulets. He goes along with the guard arrangement and tries unsuccessfully to engage them in a discussion of the arcane arts.
Kiwina begins drawing a picture of one of the amulets, but stops when Rolth begrudgingly agrees to show Tenzar a mundane one. He avoids going through the clan holding, opting instead to stay in the room.
Tsak also decides to stay in and asks for a bath. After some discussion about what he wants, a reasonably big tub is brought, but it takes a while to heat enough water. Esmerelda is not amused by the bath and does not agree to such.

Tenzar will ask to keep the amulet he is shown by Rolth, offering to pay 100 gp for the thing. He asks to see the magical ones as well. He will not force this, but you get the sense that refusing him will really piss him off towards you.

That evening, guards decide it’s best to keep those going out all together, and they are unyielding on this. So Mak, Rolth, Falso and Elyas are together. They are escorted by 5 liontaurs, a mix of men and women, three of which are pretty serious, but two younger ones are easier to deal with and seem a bit immature but much more fun.

Mak is able to buy as many arrows as he wants along with a composite bow. He can even buy a horse, and is taken to a stable where he can choose one. Alas, they do not have a saddle as they do not ride, but they can provide a pack to put on the horse so it can carry his gear. The horse does have a lead, but not a bit and bridle like he’s used to seeing. They can keep the horse for him that night and have it brought to him in the morning. The price of the horse is 100 gp, and they’ll throw in the pack bags.

This group does warm up to the Petals though, as the Petals generally treat them with kindness and respect. They even tolerate Elyas’ rambling discourse on arcana. When Mak throws down 100 gp on the table, it is viewed as him buying drinks for all in the tavern for the night. This makes Mak, and the others by extension, very popular. The two younger taur guards, and the others in the place joke around with Mak, and teach him a few drinking songs. The three older guards will have a drink or two, but the others in the tavern drink to excess. They serve beer and wine.

Out in the town, the four Petals will learn the following:
- The refugees were indeed sent to Chessford.
- The liontaur guards do not think Tenzar would send an advance group to Chessford to deliver news of the Petals return.
- Tenzar intends to escort the Petals to Chessford himself.
- Tenzar is a bit pompous and full of himself, but is viewed as fair and as a capable Chief and leader.
- The liontaurs mistrust the party. They are seen as outsiders that arrived about the same time that something bad happened to one clan. This is concerning and suspicious.
- They are not fond of centaurs, or minotaurs for that matter. Centaurs are thought of as too cerebral, unorganized, and tend to wait until it’s too late to act. Mintaours are too rigid, and are considered to be grouchy and unpleasant.
- It is a privilege to be a guard/soldier here, and all the guards essentially work for Tenzar.
- Family life here is pretty mundane. Children typically follow in their parents footsteps. This also tends to preserve socioeconomic status and wealth along family lines.
- There is a fair amount of economic disparity, but this is accepted as normal. The crowd here at this tavern is mixed in this regard.
- The three older guards are none too happy with the two younger ones getting drunk, and you think those two are going to be in some pretty big trouble.

Meanwhile, back at the place you’re staying, Kiwina and Tsak are treated well and brought food, along with some beer or wine. Some nice raw meat is brought for Esmerelda as well. Your hosts ask about how a centaur, and a, what is Tsak again? Oh yes, how did a centaur and a half orc come to be travelling with a liontaur and his entourage. Did the liontaur recruit you, or are you bound to him in some way?

Eventually the liontaur guards will bring the rest of the Petals back, probably earlier than Mak wanted, but you are brought back after a reasonable time out.

Rolth will look to his fellow Petals for their views on selling the non-magical amulet, and showing one of the magical ones. He is fine with selling the non-magical one, but proposes to the Petals putting stipulations on showing the other. More specifically, he would ask the Chief to forbid anyone from trying to take or keep the amulet, and give us permission to resist anyone in the clanhold from attempting to take or keep the amulet. It would not leave our possession and will be shown only long enough for the Chief to get a sense of its look, and if we begin to feel it attempt to sway our thoughts, the Petals will immediate store it again. He leaves unsaid that we need Goldmane's favor for our mission from the Purple Duke, knowing that the Petals will recall this, so it seems unwise to flatly refuse his request despite the risk. If the Petals agree, Rolth will acknowledge the Chief's right to ask this of us here on his territory, but remind him that the amulet will try to turn taur against taur, falsely promising power but truly offering only death and suffering. (Diplomacy = 25)

Afterwards, he will enjoy his time on the town, then turn in for a good nights sleep, awaking to take his turn on watch even here. (Perception = 31)

Mak had a method to his drinking. He'd consume enough to dull the pain in his leg and then slowly imbibe to keep the pain away. Most of the time he'd not get drunk, but tonight was an exception. When he arrived back at the guest house he was lit. Perhaps it was just him letting off steam from his near death encounter in those caves that did it. He did manage to relate what they had learned while out to the others in case they didn't hear about it, especially the part about Tenzer escorting them into Chessford in the morning.

As for who saw what and paid for it, Mak didn't like the idea of selling the non magical amulet. He felt they should just give it to Tenzer as proof to the council about what they found. For the magical ones, Mak would rather not be in the room when they came out.

The next morning Mak woke bleary eyed and hung over, but at some point he'd had a revelation. While he sat watch in the guest house he placed his rapier in his lap and started to decipher the writing along the blades fuller. It was an ancient writing, a secret code the family used, and during the night he remembered a portion of it. Though the meaning of the words eluded him at present he felt he was much closer than he'd ever been.

Kiwina has no issue with selling (or giving) the non-magical amulet, but thinks that the precautions they have in place to keep themselves from reaching the magical ones should not be gone through lightly. They will undoubtedly be showing the amulets to the council as a whole, if Tenzar can wait a day to satisfy his curiousity. . . (untrained Diplomacy roll of 16 to aid Rolth) . . . And if not, then maybe seeing the precautions will impress upon him how worried the Petals are about the things.

Kiwina did not think to ask it before, but he wonders what will happen to the Houndstooth clan -- whether those that still live will be encouraged to rebuild or whether they will be expect to join other clans without Nantyr to lead them. He does not even know if there are clanless liontaurs on this island.

Tsak thinks that leaving the clan with a copy of the non-magical amulet is a good idea, so that they can spread word of what to be wary of. He doesn't like the idea of unpacking one of the magical ones at all.

To the petals in private I may not fully understand the implications of upsetting this guy, but we report to the council not just him. The magic in these amulets is powerful and evil. I think they should decide when and how the amulets are unveiled and also what happens to them afterwards. Perhaps it can be framed as concern for his clan, remembering what has happened to the Houndstooth.

Tsak finds time to give Esmerelda a thorough brushing to try to mend bridges with the miffed cat.

Rolth considers Tenzar’s request. He politely tells Tenzar that he sees little problem with the mundane amulet, but the magical ones pose a safety issue the Petals must discuss. He informs the Chief that they will deliver their decision in the morning if that is acceptable to the Chief. (This is my interpretation of the party wanting to discuss the matter.)
Mak thinks the mundane amulet should not be sold, but given as a gift to Tenzar. He returns that night with the others a bit wobbly, but in one piece. He wakes with a bit of a headache and feeling a little ill. He tries to focus his attention on his ancestral sword, studying the blade and looking for meaning in the strange adamantine metal.
Kiwina has no concerns with the mundane amulet, and agrees with caution in dealing with the magical ones.
Tsak agrees with letting go of a non-magical amulet, and reminds everyone that they will report to the Council, not just Tenzar. He thinks the Council should decide the amulets’ fate.

The four Petals that choose to explore the town have a good time, though it winds up a bit early for Mak’s tastes.

Tsak and Kiwina are treated with a quiet kindness by their hosts. If they bore any apprehension about a centar, or a half-orc for that matter, they show no sign of this. A female liontaur even politely asks a number of questions for Kiwina about his family, his clan, what life is like on Centaur Isle. A large, soft sheepskin is brought for Esmerelda and put before the fireplace.

The Petals continue to discuss Tenzar and the non-magical and magical amulets. There were 14 amulets, 7 that detected as magic and 7 that did not. As I recall, they were separated into two groups, and all placed in a box and then in an extradimensional space. Tenzar expects and answer in the morning.

Rolth prays to Domi overnight and feels that it is best to heed the wise advice of the Petals, and chooses to gently deflect the Chief's request to see the amulet now. He proposed to say to the Chief that we will gift him the non-magical amulet as a show of our trust and gratitude for his generosity to the refugees and us.

With respect to the magical amulet, he is of course entitled to see it as a Chief and member of the Council, but that as a shaman in training, I have appealed to Domi the Defender for guidance, and been guided to conclude that it would be safer for all the clans if the showing of the amulet were to occur under the guardianship and wise oversight of all the clan chiefs. Given that we are set to travel to Chessford together, that can happen very soon, and of course our report to the Council will highlight the noble, generous, and wise role that the Goldmane chief and clan played in our successful return to report, as originally ordered by the whole council. And of course, as Chief of the powerful Goldmane clan, the Chief will have a predominant role in what the Council decides to do from there, so his will should be carried out just as well there, and with less immediate risk to his clanhold should the amulet show its evil powers.

Rolth will modify this speech at the suggestion of the Petals, and deliver it when the moment arises. If we can arrange to talk with the Chief privately and choreograph the whole thing, all the better. Rolth is fine if the Chief can make this all seem to be his idea. He will cast Eagle's Splendor just before going to talk to the Chief, for a little boost to his chances of success. He feels he isn't being all that persuasive and so burns a hero point for an additional boost, while looking to the Petals for support.

"If we refuse it will embarrass him and undermine his authority. Perhaps the answer is to insist the amulet only be revealed to him alone and once we have him with none of his subjects around express our heartfelt reluctance that he see the magical amulets. We may even have to let Rolth do this alone as all of us in one room with the leader might not make them comfortable." he reminded them all. Rolth prays to Domi. He is fine with giving Tenzar the mundane amulet, but proposes to tell the Chief privately that the magical amulets will only be revealed in the presence of the council, and that this is the will of Domi. He will pour his heroic reserves into this to be most convincing.
Mak suggests that refusing Tenzar may embarrass him, and that perhaps if the Petals can get him alone they can explain the magical amulets need to remain hidden.
Falco contemplates his spells for the day and remains silent on the amulet decisions.
Kiwina kindly answers his hosts questions about centaurs and where he is from.
Elyas is willing to cast a protective spell on everyone if the party decided to pull out those magical amulets they’re carrying.
Tsak agrees with the protections the others are proposing, but is ready to back up a firm “no” to Tenzar if needed.

The female liontaur that spoke with Kiwina will later give him a small carved figure of a liontaur holding a hammer and a shield. ”This represents Domi. May he guard you on your journeys.”

That morning, you will find an expectant Tenzar there with 6 guards ready for travel. Mak’s horse is there with large, empty pack bags on it’s back.

Tenzar looks at you expectantly. ”I trust you found your accommodations acceptable? Now, let us have a look at those amulets.” As the Petals give him the mundane amulet, he regards it, turning it around in his hand. ”Ugh. It’s an ugly thing, but interesting. You wish to speak to me in private about these others?”

The Petals go into Tenzar’s home. Some guards move to go with you, but he waves them off.

It’s nice, but a bit gaudy. He takes you to an inner atrium, closing the doorway to the house so that you are all alone with him. As Rolth and the others explain their reticence about revealing the powerful amulets here, Tenzar listens sternly and nods. His expression is difficult to read.

Sense Motive DC 18:Highlight to display spoiler: {Tenzar is not upset by this, and he seems to accept the Petals caution. He almost regards the Petals as peers. Almost.}

”Very well then. Exposing these other amulets you carry can wait until they are presented to the Council. You Petals are an interesting bunch. Named for a flower, you bend but do not yield. I like that. And you seem to understand our ways well enough. You’ll do fine if you choose to stay. Maybe even a centaur.” He actually smiles as he looks at Kiwina.

Once back outside, the stern ruler gestures to a couple of his guards. One hands a pouch with 100 GP to Elyas. ”Thank you for this amulet, I do not mean to diminish the gift so consider this a gift in return.” Another hands a pouch with 100 GP to Mak. ”I understand you generously entertained your escorts, though some perhaps some a bit too much. Please allow me to pay for last night’s outing.” You realize the two younger guards that drank too much are not there.

”Well then, is there anything further before we leave for Chessford?”

Mak was carrying several bundles of arrows as he exited the building. He tied them to the packs on the horse as well as to attach his own pack the animal, but without a proper saddle Mak wasn't going to ride the horse just yet.

When Tenzer offered to give Mak back his money, the noble archer raised a hand and said. "The offer to the proprietor was my own and not meant to inconvenience you. You were generous enough in offering us shelter for the night. I also noticed the guards from last night aren't present, I hope they weren't reprimanded for being good hosts as they were professional and alert at all times.

The explanation Mak delivered didn't feel adequate to the noble archer and he knew he'd gone wrong somewhere as a result, but his intentions were good. He hoped that Tenzer could sense that about him. At the same time Mak desperately wished for Rolth's golden tongue as he analyzed his own words repeatedly in his own head.

When Falco asked about learning to ride Mak responded. "I'm certainly no expert, but I do know the basics, old bean. I'll be happy to teach you what I know, but this horse is untested and being here in a community of those that aren't riders...well. It's possible the poor beast hasn't been properly....trained." Broken in was in Mak's thoughts and this horse could very well be meant as a joke. He'd not put Falco upon such an untested mount.

"Anyone can ride and direct a horse with little training. It's only when things go sideways you need to know what you are doing." Mak continued as he carefully examined the horse for anomalies.

Falco sees Mak’s horse and thinks to himself that he should ask Mak for some riding lessons.
Elyas is relieved that things worked out with the amulets, so far at least. He is anxious to get to Chessford.
Mak refuses the repayment and hopes the two younger guards were not reprimanded. He secured some arrows he bought in the horses packs. He offers to teach Falco something about riding, because anyone can ride a horse. Mak then tries to get on his new horse.
Rolth asks Tenzar if he can send some liontaurs to check on the survivors at the Houndstooth Clan Holding.
Kiwina thanks the woman for her gift that night. He sees her there among the crowd and nods to her, which draws some looks but she seems rather proud of the acknowledgement. He wonders aloud about a horse aboard the ship.
Tsak is amused at the thought of Mak shoveling horse waste aboard the ship, and thinks this might be the start of a garden aboard the Rose. (Tsak has been cleaning up Esmerelda’s soil box while on the ship.)

Tenzar responds to Rolth, ”The returned Houndstooth liontaurs will need to fend for themselves until we speak to the Council. Do you have reason to think they are in danger?”

Tenzar gives Mak a stern look. ”I expect my guards to have discipline and to know their limits when they are on duty. You are new to us, so I will caution you not to interfere in the inner workings of a Clan. As for the funds, I will see that they are put to good use if you do not need them.” He directs the guard with the pouch to hold onto it.

Mak looks his new horse over, walking around the beast. It is docile and does not seem to mind the packs or the lead on its head. Mak takes the lead in his hands to use as reins, and decides to get on the animal. There are no stirrups, so he needs to hop up on his stomach before he can shift into a riding position. He has an audience at this point, and some quizzical looks. As the others begin to move forward, Mak tries to make his horse move. It does not. He tries again, shaking the improvised reins and shifting his weight. Nothing. Then he gently pushes his heels into the horses flanks. The horse bolts into a gallop!

I need a DC 20 Ride Check (no saddle) for Mak to stay on this running horse. (It could possibly be controlled with a DC 25 Charisma check, but Mak cannot make that.) If Mak is thrown, the horse will continue running and Make will need to make a DC 15 Acrobatic check to avoid taking 6 points of damage from the fall. And maybe some damage to his dignity as well.

Mak thought he was being careful and the leap onto the horses back wasn't too difficult. He squeezed the horses flank with his legs and shook the lead to try to get the creature moving. Of course it bolted, something he was afraid might happen to Falco. He thought about trying to take control of the beast or to just jump off and pull it to a stop. He decided to try and gain control of it, afterall he wasn't an inexperienced rider. He wasn't a champion, but he knew his way around the creatures.

Without a proper saddle and reins it wasn't going to happen, Mak was going to be removed unwillingly from the horses back. He grimaced and threw his leg over as he tried to turn the fall into a graceful dismount. Mak's leg came up and over even as the horse bucked a little, but the agile warrior landed on his feet with his dignity intact. He did hold onto the lead in an attempt to keep the horse from running away.

Tsak checks Mak to make sure he's Ok. The whole episode tickled his funny bone, but he's also aware of the existing injuries that plague the plucky warrior.
That's a cunning plan lad, if you screw up your other leg maybe they'll balance each other out and you can walk in a straight line?

He looks over the horse when it settles down.
We call them a 'brumby' where I'm from. If we can train it to be ridden it will be useful, they're smart and hardy. Meanwhile, if I may, I suggest we call it 'Boomerang'.

DM Mark - Chessford

Mak’s horse panaced a bit at the riding attempt. The horse seemed OK with Mak as cargo, but got spooked with the cargo tried to get him to move. Perhaps most importantly, Mak manages to land on his feet but is almost pulled off balance as he tries to hold onto the improvised reins.
Falco laughs at the show. Mak manages to laugh along with him as he goes to check on the archer.
Kiwina is ready to chase the horse down, but Mak manages to keep hold of the thing. He does not think the remnants of the Houndstooth Clan are in any particular danger.
Rolth answers Tenzar, agreeing with Kiwina’s assessment.
Tsak is a bit worried for Mak, and has a couple names for the horse.

The other liontaurs have a laugh at Mak’s expense, but this is shut down quickly by a sharp glare from Chief Tenzar. He brings the liontaurs over to where Mak is. ”Are you alright? We do not ride horses here. It appears that whomever sold this beast to you thought you would use it as we do, as a beast of burden. If you seek a creature to ride upon, you may find such in Chessford. If you wish, we can broker a trade there for your animal if there is riding horse to be had there. You Petals have sought to serve the liontaurs. I will not see you treated badly.”

While Mak may have to walk, he will find that his horse is a fairly docile creature and will easily carry his things.

Regarding the Houndstooth Clan, Tenzar is a bit derisive. ”Nantyr was never really satisfied with his Clans holdings, nor its place among the clans. It is not surprising that he would be easily swayed by a promise of power from some source. Still, I would never wish another Chief dead nor his clan destroyed. Let us present your information to the Council. And perhaps then we can see these accursed amulets that have caused all the trouble.

“Come, let us be off to Chessford.”

It takes the better part of the day to reach Chessford at a walking speed. The liontuars have some wonderful food and wine, which they share with you.

As you near the city, you pass a few fortified farms. Liontaurs come out to stare, and some wave. Tenzar and his guards seem to ignore them.

Coming in to Chessford, you are greeted by some armed and armored liontaurs that ride out to meet you. ”Greetings Tenzar. Greetings Petals of the Eight Petaled Rose. I am Frolfenrir.”

Before you can reply, Tenzar interrupts in a commanding voice. ”Frolfenrir, these Petals are under the protection of the Goldmane Clan. They came to me, and I am bringing them to the Council. They bear important news.”

The commander of this new group sends two of his liontaurs off into the city. He turns to Tenzar and replies rather cooly, ”Thank you for bringing them Chief Tenzar. You approach the domain of the Sandifur Clan, and they do not need your protection here.” He addresses the Petals. ”There have been rumors of troubles and some have come with terrible tales. At the direction of Chief Harkin Sandifur, these refugees are being kept apart from the city residents for now, but you may see them if you wish. Another liontaur arrived here, but he is not sound of mind and is imprisoned. The Council is being summoned, and should be assembled in about an hour. Quarters are available for you if you would refresh yourselves from your travels. We are instructed to take you where you wish to go.”

Tenzar seems not quite ready to cede control. ”Petals, if you wish you may stay at my house. I have one here in Chessford, and you may refresh yourselves there.”

Kiwina suggests that the Petals see the imprisoned liontaur prior to meeting the council, thinking it might be under the influence of an amulet. He does not want to ask whether it is wearing one, but rather see for themselves. Since they have discussed the amulets with Tenzar, he could also come see unless he has other things to attend to before the meeting.

Thinking that it would be unwise to offend either of these influential clansby choosing one over the other, Rolth suggests to the Petals that we need to check on our ship and crew after such a long absence, so perhaps we should head there for the hour before the Council meeting. If the Petals agree, he will explain this to the a chief and the Sandifurr commander, expressing our appreciation for their offers of hospitality but emphasizing our duty to our crew that comes before such pleasures.

Alternately, if the Petals prefer to interview the refugees before the Council, that would accomplish the same purpose. Either way, Rolth is happy to speak for the party to smooth our way.

Mak had a smile on his face. He was a good sport in most cases and this time was no exception. He had been fooled and accepted it. The laughter of the liontaurs confirmed it for him. When Tenzer silenced them Mak thought it a bit too strong. What happened was funny.

When Tsak suggested a name, Mak replied. "I was thinking Elmer, but Boomerang works as well. When we get time I'd enjoy training this horse to accept a rider."

Tenzers apology for the misguided merchant that sold him the horse mollified the soldier somewhat as he replied to the Chief. "A deal is a deal. I purchased the horse in good faith, had I examined it more closely I'd have known it was unsuitable for riding. The fault is mine."

Despite it all he still limped along painfully from the experience and ended up trailing behind everyone during the journey to Chessford. Without the burden of a pack Mak was sore but not entirely exhausted on their arrival.

Mak nodded to Frolfenrir and noted that most of these taurs names resembled the sounds a house cat might make. He kept the observation to himself though as he hid the notion behind an amused smile.

Frolfenrir and Tenzer had a moment in which Tenzer seemed to have claimed them as his property, or perhaps he wanted the discovery of whatever they brought to be credited to him. Frolfenrir responded in a like manner and Mak noted that these taurs were quite territorial and power hungry. No wonder the amulets held such an attraction to them. It promised everything they were seeking. Mak's gaze passed to Rolth as he wondered how the bard managed to resist the temptation of the magical devices.

For Mak he didn't care about fame or glory, staying alive was more in his line as he searched the world for a suitable place to settle down. Aisildur was not it, he was certain. Liontaur island wasn't it either.

Mak was about to suggest they see the prisoner when Kiwina made the same, so he stayed quiet as he wondered if the insane taur was wearing an amulet.

"Perhaps his mind isn't his own." Mak suggested casually to Rolth and added. "I also have some pressing business aboard the Rose. A detour to sort that would be appreciated."

Kiwina would like to see the imprisoned liontaur that Frolfenrir mentioned. He suspects the creature may be under the influence of one of the amulets and offers for Tenzar to come too.
Rolth senses there is some competition going on between these clans, and chooses neither proposing to instead go to The Rose to prepare for the clan meeting. He makes an excuse about needing to check on the crew.
Mak senses that the Petals seem to be some sort of prize for these two clans. He echos Rolth’s assertion that they retire to the ship, and he agrees with Kiwina’s suggestion to see this mad liontuar.
Falco and Elyas agree to head to the ship.
Tsak suggests the ship, the refugees and the Council - in that order. And he likes the name Elmer for Mak’s horse.

As Mak considers names for his horse, one of the liontaurs says, “Maybe you should call him Getoffme,” though it’s clear from his demeanor that he only meant it as a friendly jest.

Frolfenrir and Tenzar both accept the Petals reasons for going to their ship. Tenzar says coolly, ”Very well. As for the mad liontaur, I have no need to see the poor creature. I will send my men to the docks in a bit to escort you to the Council meeting.” Frolfenrir replies, ”You may do as you wish Chief Tenzar, but they will not need guards here. He turns to the Petals, ”You are free to go where you wish. Would you like me to provide a guide? You may recall where the Council meets, but you will need direction if you wish to see the mad liontuar. I will send word that you may be visiting in any case. You will be allowed in.”

Tenzar nods and heads away (depending on your reply to him.) If you accept Frolfenrir’s offer of a guide, he will dispatch one of his men to accompany you, a liontaur names Brwolney.

The petals and the horse (and perhaps Brwolney) go to their ship. They find that things are in order. Some of the crew is in town. Some being weird plant hybrids they tend to draw attention wherever they go. You notice there are more races represented here. A couple of centars, some minotaur dock workers here and there. There are a few humans and half-orcs milling about, but most here are liontaurs. You get some nods and looks as you go, but the feel is more friendly here than it was at the Goldmane Clan holding.

Brwolney makes small talk about where you’re from, why you're here, where to get food and drink in town, which street food to avoid. Your crew asks where you’ve been and when they're leaving. One of the crew has injured himself in a fall and is laid up.

What do you do with the horse?
Do you do anything at the ship or the docks?
Does anything occur before you try to see this imprisoned liontaur?

"Say, Falco old man. You think that looks like a hammer of sorts?" Mak said pointing at the ground where his foot had been. "Sometimes I see shapes in things." he explained. "But I seem to see this one alot. Strange hammer though, the handle piece is off."

Mak shrugged. "My imagination, I guess.

Rolth accepts both offers of help. (One is Brwolney? The others is Tenzar’s offer to escort you from the docks to the Council? Is this correct?)
Mak sees the image of a hammer in a footprint and asks Falco about this. He also looks for a stable for Elmer.
Falco looks at the footprint. He can sort of see what Mak mentions, but is more concerned that Mak is seeing hammers in things. The cleric heals the injured crewman and asks how the crew is doing.
Kiwina also sees to the crewman’s wounds. He thanks Ramsey for his oversight of the Rose.
Elyas inspect the ship, and things generally seem to be in order.
Tsak ask how the crewman got injured in the first place, and reprimands him a bit for being careless.

The crewman is a bit evasive about how he fell, when another offers, ”He was drunk, he was. That’s how it happened. If’n ya canna hold yer liquor, at least own up to it.” There are some glares exchanged among the crew there.

Ramsey ignores the exchange and addresses the Petals on another matter. ”Beggin’ yer pardon, but the ship’s kitty is getting a bit low. We need some funds fer ship supplies and fer payin’ the crew. If’n it please you good sirs, I reckon about 50 gold would put us in good shape fer a bit.”

With Brwolney’s help, Mak is able to locate a stable. It’s not quite the kind of stable that Mak is accustomed to for horses - more of a general animal yard. Nonetheless, the place sees orderly and the animals there well cared for. The liontaur there asks for a silver to stable Elmer.

At the Petal’s request, Brwolney will then take them to where this imprisoned liontaur. They are led through Chessford. You pass many of the sort of shops and homes you would expect to see, some richer and some poorer, though the general design is different here. Wide doorways, large windows, many of which have a large platform jutting out on which you see an occasional liontaur lounging.

You eventually wind you way to a stone building next to what looks like a barracks. Liontaurs come and go, and Brwolney mentions that you are here to see the mad liontaur. You are led in, and pass a few cells that hold liontaurs and one with a minotaur with a broken horn. You reach a cell that has a liontaur chained to the wall. As you approach, you can see he is bruised and battered. He raises his head and red-rimmed eyes glare balefully at you. You get a low growl. He wears the remnants of leather armor.

Perception DC 12: Highlight to display spoiler: {You can see a glint of gold in the made below his chin.}

Brwolney speaks to a guard there and tells you, ”This one was found roaming near the shore just outside of town. I think he was from the Houndstooth clan from the look of him, but not quite sure. Also, we found him about the same time as Tenzar sent us those refugees. Shoved them off on Chessford, he did. I don’t know why Tenzar didn’t see to their needs - that Goldmane Clan’s the richest with their mines and all.

“But this one here, he’s nuts! We had a rough time bringing him in. Kept fighting us for no reason. We were afraid he’d hurt somebody if we left him run free. Kept ranting about the sea and doom and stuff. Maybe Tenzar sent him here too, I dunno. If you want in, we’ll let you in. But watch him. He may be chained and all, but he bites and stuff.”

If the Petals ask the guards will open the door. A couple come with stout wooden poles shod with metal on one end. They look ready to pushed through the bars to thrust at the creature if necessary. A couple more stand ready with clubs.

Mak was confused about the stable, but he needed a safe place to stable Elmer and this seemed a good one. He paid the taur and returned to the ship with Brwolney at the ship with the others, packs and arrows in hand. He was moving a little slow, but fortunately it wasn't a long walk.

At Ramsey's question about pay, Mak counted out the fifty gold and put them in the man's hand and then put another fifty in his hand. "Hazard pay." Mak explained. "Keep sharp and if you see anyone wearing one of those squidly amulets we found let us know immediately. If it's a crew member you should detain him."

When they arrived later to investigate the crazy Houndstooth clansman Mak too noticed the glint of gold from the taur's neck. "How do you want to subdue him?" Mak asked as he gripped his sword and thought to grab one of those clubs for himself.

"We could try to hold him down." Mak said all the while thinking about the last time he'd tried to hold a cat down. The experience wasn't a pleasant one. "Please tell me you can majik him to sleep or something." Mak said to Elyas.

When an opportunity presents he has a chat with Rolth about showing the crew what the squidly amulets actually look like.

Once at the imprisoned taur he also notices the glint of what may be an amulet.
You've done a good job lads. Many others in his condition have met a much worse fate. If we can secure him a little more, we can probably help him, but we'll need a bit of space. Would you happen to have a small sack or bit of cloth about the place? Big enough to wrap my two hands together should do the trick.

At the holding cell, Brwolney gestures impatiently to the guards at Tsak’s request. They quickly hand Tsak both a small leather bag and a large handkerchief. It’s almost clean.

He really seems a pitiable figure, clad in dirty clothing and the remnants of what was once a complete suit of leather armor. And he’s pretty beat up.

Tsak does what he can to coordinate things, ready to capture the amulet in something. He warns the jailors to stand clear. Esmerelda thinks the noble and ignoble races are weird and looks around for a rat.
Falco has cast his spell and encourages others to grab the necklace.
Mak moves into the cell and makes sure the held liontaurs clothing is not obscuring the amulet.
Elyas casts Protection from Evil on the creature, hoping to free him from any mental control. He stands ready to cast other spells if needed.
Rolth squeezes into the cell with Mak and the held Taur. He reaches into the creature's mane and feels around for the amulet. It is cool to the touch despite being on the thing’s neck. He lifts it off over the creature’s head.
Kiwina stands ready with two weapons to subdue the liontaur if things go sideways.

As all this happens, the liontaur surges forward (makes his save), but the effort is weak. In his current state with his wounds and chains there’s little he can do. He bares his teeth and he could bite Rolth, but he does not.

”NO! NO, THAT IS MINE! GIVE ME THAT BACK! YOU don’t understand. You cannot! We...we...I...ugh. I must leave here. I should go. Let me go. Beneath the waves there is peace, in the cool dark there is peace. Peace.”

Then he almost begins to whimper, ”Please, let me go. Please...help me. I need to go...to go...away from here. Will you let me out? Please, let me go to peace. I...I...I want to go.”

He seems a bit frantic.

Sense Motive DC 15: Highlight to display spoiler: {From the liontaur’s demeanor, they way his eyes dart around, the way his licks his lips - he’s not all there. He does not seem violent any more, but he is not quite sane either.”}

”Huh. What the heck is that?”
“So, is that gonna make this guy better?
“We’d need Chief Harkin’s OK to let him go I think. Should we let him go?”[b]

Brwolney looks to the Petals to see how they handle all this. He looks at the amulet as he says, [b]”So that’s what all the fuss is about? A piece of jewelry?”

Rolth can tell that this poor taur is still a little off kilter. (Sense motive = 26) Once the amulet is safely stowed according to our standard protocol, he will nevertheless ask the fellow some questions.

"Perhaps we can intercede with the Council on your behalf. Any useful information that you can provide would strengthen your case with them. So please tell us, where did you get that amulet and from whom? When was that? What makes you think that there is peace in the dark beneath the waves? What did you mean by starting a sentence with 'we' instead of 'I'? Why did you come to Chessford with the amulet? Did any others with such amulets come to Chessford? If so, who and when?

To the guards, Rolth reinforces Kiwina's recommendation that they continue to hold this taur until the Council has discussed the issue.

Unless the prisoner tells us something truly surprising, Rolth is then ready to head to the Council meeting with our guide and escorts.

Kiwina warns the guards not to release the liontaur without word from the Council. The Centaur watches to make sure the amulet is stowed safely away.
Falco hopes the poor creature's mind will come back to him.
Mak leaves the guards to their work.
Elyas works with Tsak to secure the amulet.
Rolth says to the chained taur, "Perhaps we can intercede with the Council on your behalf.

The guards nod at the directive to not release the taur.

His responses to Rolth is not particularly helpful.

"Council? What do they matter - they cannot understand ... anymore than you can understand."
"Information? Amulet? It was my connection, given me by my clan. But the dark voices had already begun to fade. Perhaps I was not strong enough, perhaps the voices in the deep tested me and found me lacking."
"There is no pain, you are receding."
"Peace beneath the waves? The cold and the darkness bring peace. But you do not understand. You cannot."
"You are only coming through in waves."

The guards and Brwolney watch intently the way the Petals gingerly handle the amulet. Brwolney says, "Hoo, that must be pretty bad."

With nothing more to do here, the Petals leave the chained taur. Itfs clear the fight has gone out of him, for now at least.

Brwolney leads you back to the house assigned to you. There you find refreshments have been provided - wine and ale, cheese, a rough tasty bread, some warm sausages cooked with onion and apples. The food is simple but quite good. The bread has an interesting spice you cannot place.

Brwolney asks, "Would you like me to return to escort you to the Council Meeting? I should warn you that with the recent reports of troubles, no one will be allowed weapons at the Council. Well, except for some guards. Also, you will not need your armor there. Your things will be safe here, or you may bring them and leave them outside the Council Hall. These two will see you your needs until it is time."

There are a couple of liontaur attendants that seem ready to help with food of other things you may need.

How do you prepare yourselves?

Eventually Chief Tenzar return with is retinue, and perhaps Brwolney as well if you tell him to be there.

"I'll not relinquish my armor and weapons." Mak announced. "If pressed I shall wait outside council chambers. I fear that these amulets remind me of the insidiousness of the heart seeded. If any on the council have been turned it could be an elaborate trap. A few of us should wait outside with the others items while Rolth and Kiwina speak to the chiefs. They do not need all of us there to tell the tale. We also need a safe word in case any of us are being coerced to behave against our will. As unlikely as it might seem I feel the tactic necessary. Let us make the word something that would not normally arise in conversation. I suggest "Aisildur". Work it into a question or statement when we meet back up so all know everything is well."

DM Mark - Chessford
Thursday February 11th, 2021 2:53:09 AM

Rolth is sad for the Taur in chains. He let’s Browlney know his presence would be most welcome going to the Council Meeting.
Kiwina makes his way to the Rose in preparation for the meeting. It’s not far from where you are. He wears a uniform and leaves his weapons and armor aboard the ship before returning to the guest house with the others.
Mak tries to play along with Rolth, but soon just listens to him play. He says he will stay outside the Council meeting rather than give up his weapons and armor, and offers to watch the others things as well. He recommends that all but Rolth and Kiwina stay outside as well, and he suggests the others use the word “Asildur” to guard against coercion or mind control.
Falco would like Mak to watch the party’s things outside the Council Meeting so they have them nearby.
Tsak goes with Kiwina to leave his weapons and armor on the ship. He suggests the passphrase be “which one’s Pink?”

Your attendants will respond to Mak’s request for additional clothing. ”We can have clothing made to your specifications, but not in time for your meeting this afternoon. Would you like us to summon a taylor? We can do our best to spruce up what you have though.” Mak will find that his uniform is spot cleaned and brushed, and that his chain shirt has been buffed so that the surface links shine in contrast to the darker parts beneath. They ask to keep the clothing Mak removes to have it properly cleaned.

In fact, anyone that intends to wear clothing or insists on wearing armor will find these attendants bring others in to do their best to spiff things up. They will explain that typically the only armor worn to a Council meeting would be ceremonial armor that is usually too fancy to be worn into battle. Battle worn armor is not prohibited, just not appropriate Council attire.

Eventually, Browlney will arrive with Tenzar and his guards. Tenzar wears gleaming bejeweled armor. As they go with you to the Council Halll, Tenzar seems to lead this procession. Your group gets a number of stares, but none done in a gawking or rude fashion. Most are smiling or offer a respectful wave, but some almost seem to avert their gaze with apprehension and scurry away.

As you approach, you remember the hall from before, while not ostentatious it is undeniably the seat of power here. You see an old friend. Arostle approaches and greets you warmly.

”Ah, welcome back. I only just heard that you had returned. The Council will be most interested in what you have found. Indeed, some refugees arrived from the Houndstooth Clan with strange tales, and then there are the tales that grow with the telling. The Council will be anxious to hear your report.”

As Tenzar moves into the hall he is stopped by a guard at the entrance who gestures to Tenzar’s weapon. The liontaur chief snorts with displeasure as he leaves a very fancy greatsword, leaving it with one of his own guards before he strides into the hall.

Browlney steps up, gestures to your weapons, ”Those weapons will need to be left here please. This is not usual, but ill tidings have set the Council on edge. I assure you they will be kept safe.” Guards step forward, ready to accept your weapons and anything else you do not wish to take into the Council Hall.

Kiwina and Tsak have no weapons, or armor for that matter. Does Mak change his mind or remain outside with his weapons? What of Falco and Elyas?

Your are brought into a large hall with a round table. As before there are six seats, five are occupied, one is empty.

As you enter, Tenzar stands and says, “My fellow Council members, you will recall the Eight Petaled Rose. They came to me and I escorted them back here for safety. They have news for us, important news that you should hear as I did.” He turns to the Petals. ”Please, tell them the news you brought first to me.”

In addition to Tenzar you recognize:
Harkin Sandifurr, a large, older Liontaur, his mane is beginning to lose it's colour, but his eyes are sharp and intelligent..

Gyrak Longclaw, a slightly younger Taur, though still oldish, with crisscross scars over his body, causing his black fur to not grow in certain places, with the bearing and stature of a warrior.

Jasak Redtooth with a shock of red in his mane and a sour scowl on his face.

Irian Stormeye, his fur and mane have no colour remaining, it has all been drained by time, he wears over his right eye a leather eye-patch etched with a lightening bolt.

Rolth will thank Chief Tenzar and Chief Harking for their hospitality as we returned from our quest, and along with the others for the opportunity to speak with the Council. He will relate the story as previously told to Chief Tenzar, with a few updates. "I'm afraid that we have discovered a calamity, one that poses a threat to other liontaurs here on the island and other folk in the region. It seems that the Houndstooth clan had fallen under the sway of evil magic amulets, connected to a dark power called 'The Deep.' We found that most, including Nantyr, had been turned into undead or other abominations by a Chuul priest of The Deep. Although we kept our promise to kill no taurs, we were forced to destroy the undead and abominations, along with the altar being used to created the abominations. We did manage to find and rescue a few stragglers, no more than two dozen. They are safe in their village, under the eye of Chesmu and some of the more competent survivors. Upon our return to Chessford, we were able to interview one of the refugee taurs, the mad one. It turns out that he also had been afflicted by an amulet, and is not in his right mind. These amulets cause taurs to turn upon each other, deceiving them with promises of power and survival. But it is a lie, the amulets bring nothing but ruin and death or worse. We have secured the ones that we found, and strongly recommend that they not be brought forth, lest they wreak havoc on those you protect and lead. So we believe that we have done what we promised, investigating the disappearance of Nantyr. I regret that the story has such a grisly end. I would ask you to consider what might be done to help the survivors of the Houndstooth clan, for even if they might be rivals to some, they are still Domi's children and our cousin liontaurs. What say you, wise Chiefs?"

The young nobleman was used to such displays of authority and the finery that those in charge were wont to show. He too had once done as a much at the behest of his father, but those days were far in the past. Now though with the Deep threatening what the heartseed mother had done back home Mak was on guard against such a thing happening again. It was like the same war starting up all over.

"I've seen this happen before." Mak warned them as they travelled to the council chambers. "You cannot trust anyone. Be on guard and question everyone's motives before you agree to anything and don't allow yourselves to be alone with anyone."

Mak entered the council building but stopped outside the door and faced his companions. "This is as far as I go." he said as he adjusted his sword and the bow at his back and accepted any weapons his friends wanted him to hold. Afterwards he set his pack down at his feet and stood with his back against the wall while he waited on them to finish within. As he did so he took a small sip from his flask and then tucked it back into it's place.

Once the petals were inside Mak set himself up as he would if he were guarding someone important and didn't take his eyes from any taurs that were stationed outside with him.

Rolth eloquently relates what he believes happened to the Houndstooth Clan, and about the horrible creatures found in a grotto behind a waterfall. He tells them about the remnants of the Houndstooth Clan, the mad liontaur, and the amulets which he does not want to show the Council.
Mak warns the Petals they can trust no one. He stays outside and takes charge of anything the Petals leave outside the Council Hall, despite Browlney’s insistence that the liontaur guards with their things.
Falco adds a plea that the Council send aid to what is left of the Houndstooth Clan.
Elyas insists that he cast protections on any that would view the amulets Rolth mentions.
Kiwina worries about leaving Mak alone outside. He tells the Council that Browlney can verify they took an amulet from the mad taur.
Tsak

There is discussion amongst the Council. Clearly there is some skepticism that an entire clan could be wiped out by some amulets. Irian Stormeye rolls his one good eye at the mention of Chesmmu. Browlney will affirm that an amulet was taken from Omnac Steelhand, the mad taur in chains, and that the Petals handled the thing with great care.

At Rolth’s reluctance to produce the amulets, Tenzar speaks up. His eyes narrow, as he says, ”What is your game with these amulets Petals? You would not show them to me, but you agreed that you would produce them at the Council meeting. Now you would renege on this? None have seen this cache to which you refer. And why have you not destroyed them? You will produce them now. As you promised.”

Irian says, ”Relax Tenzar. We have no reason to mistrust these good folk. We know something bad has befallen Nantyr and his clan. The refugees you refused to care for and foisted on Harkin confirmed as much. But I agree, we must see these things.” Tenzar stiffens at these words but does not reply.

Harkin adds, ”It was no burden to see to the welfare of those two from the Houndstooth Clan, and I am glad they were able to preface what is being told here. We will see what should be done to help those that survived. But please, place these accurseed amulets on the table, as we would see what it is you say we have to fear. And what exactly is it you say they do?”

Jasak Redtooth's scowl softens a bit as he says, ”Say, there was another one of you. An archer I believe. What happened to him? Did he fall in your fight with these abominations? If so, I am sorry for your loss.” Did his angry countenance seem to fall for a moment? If so, it was fleeting - his perpetual scowl is back.

Outside, Mak hangs with the guards. One says, ”So, you’re out with us to watch their stuff, eh? Do you all follow that liontaur? Is he a Chief where you come from? So what happened out there? I hear sumthin bad happened to a bunch of folk. Is this true?”

Mak was on alert and his leg was reminding him that standing was sometimes worse than walking. The dull pain within it's muscles was starting to radiate upwards into his lower back as he shifted and moved a few feet to his right in the hope to hear what might be transpiring within the chamber behind the closed door.

As quiet as he was being no words reached his ears, there was simply too much background noise to distinguish what was happening in the next room. It was just as well, the room was likely warded from eavesdroppers anyway.

OOC: Perception +5, Roll 7 fail.

When the other guards started to ask questions Mak smiled in reply and repeated each question before answering.

"So you're out to watch the stuff?"

Mak nodded and replied. "I grew up with politics and such. It's too taxing on the mind to follow it all, so I stay away from it." The answer was partially true, though his real motivation for staying outside was to be there in case things took a turn inside the room. He didn't think he'd be able to take on a room full of wemics but he might delay them long enough for his friends to get to their weapons.

"Do you all follow that Liontaur?"

Mak laughed. "No. We do not follow him, though I admit he does have the gift. Mostly we determine our course as a group, though I am but a junior member and my opinions matter little. I'd say that in the scheme of things Rolth outranks me, but he is not my commander." Mak answered even as he thought of the warning he issued to the petals under the waterfall about the enemy coming at them from behind. That circumstance became reality and he nearly died as a result when he took down 5 of the deep ones by himself.

"Is he Chief where you come from?"

"Rolth's full history has yet to be revealed to me, but as I said I am but a junior member of the petals." Mak replied.

"So what happened out there? I hear sumthin bad happened to a bunch of folks. Is it true?"

"It's true." Mak began even as he wondered how much to reveal to the guards. "The Houndstooth clan is all but gone, you've likely seen some of them here in the town. Some insidious evil has devastated them and my friends are delivering the report about that to the council as we speak. The details surrounding that should be made known to you once your chiefs have a chance to hear the report and discuss it among themselves. For now you should be alert for anyone acting strangely and report that to your commander."

Mak intentionally left out the bits about the Deep, the amulets, and any details about what they encountered under the falls. News of the Houndstooth clan was not secret and telling the guards to be alert was only telling them to do their job. That an insidious evil was responsible, well to Mak that was just to get their attention and take it seriously however true the statement might be.

Faclo sighs at the tone of the meeting and looks to the others.

"That amulets seem to be the cause of much problem and handling them is ill advised. We have not gotten to the bottom of their actual affect yet which leads to our caution, if I was to guess I would say they are cursed somehow." After a moments pause. "Putting them on a table is probably ok."

"Tenzar is right. We've been expecting to need to show the Council the amulets, and we shouldn't be shy about it now. Myself, having been around them before, I would welcome the protections Elyas proposes, whether cast by Elyas or some representative of the Council."

Kiwina turns to address the Council, "As for the question of why we have not destroyed them, we tried to. When we were unable to destroy them, we decided that keeping them with us until we were able to figure out how to destroy them would be better than leaving them hidden in some unguarded location."

In answering another question, Kiwina explains, "Our archer friend does not like to be around the things. I do not know his homeland, but he talks about something called the heartseed, and likens the amulets to it."

"My apologies for not being clear, Chiefs. I am of course willing to show an amulet upon your request. I merely wished to make clear the potentially dire consequences, and offer my advice so that you could make an informed decision. You are the Council and your will shall be done here. But I do hope that we can do so in the most wise way possible. The amulets have a strong enchantment that preys upon the mind. They will seek to turn you upon one another, and will falsely tempt you with even greater power than you already hold. My companion Elyas does have a good idea about offering some magical protection against this evil, if you will accept it. No doubt you and your clans have some protections available to you as well. Here, I will accept a spell from Elyas' wand to prove that we have no malign intent. I hope you will do the same, by Domi!"

If the Council will allow it, Rolth will ask Elyas for a protection from evil from his wand. When all is ready, he will suggest that Tsak, Elyas, and Kiwina work together to bring forth one of the magical amulets.

Tsak stands quietly in his plain lothing with the travel-stained backpack slung over his shoulder. He feels naked without weapons and armor. He will help produce an amulet when the appropriate precautions have been taken.

DM Mark - Chessford

Falco cautions against handling the amulets, but thinks putting them on the table should be fine.
Kiwina agrees with producing the amulets, and recommends magical protections. He says the Petals tried to destroy the amulets, but could not. As for Mak, he says these amulets remind him of something called a heartseed.]
Rolth warns the amulets have strong, mind-affecting enchantments on them. He echoes Kiwina’s call for magical protections, asking the Elyas provide such. Then he asks Elyas to produce one of the amulets.
Tsak watches silently, feeling a bit naked without his armor and weapons.
Mak responds to the guards questions outside the Council chamber. He shares a bit about their tale and the Houndstooth clan.

Elays will use his wand to provide magical protections to all that wish such. The Liontaur Chiefs will accept this, and Harkin says, “Thank you, Elyas is it? We can compensate you for the use of your magics if you wish.”

Tsak pulls a locked box out of his haversack and opens it. He gingerly pulls out the amulets, and he has more than a dozen of them (one from the mad liontaur, seven magical ones from the grotto, and six non-magical ones from the grotto.) He lays one of the magical ones on the table. All there stare at it for a moment.

Then Jasak Redtooth snatches it up from the table, turning the thing over in his hand with a sneer on his face. ”Huh. So this is what’s causing all the trouble. Doesn’t seem like much. How many of these do you have?”

The grizzaled Gyrak Longclaw reaches over and takes it from Jasak. He puts it on the table. ”Can’t be destroyed, eh? We’ll see about that.” He pulls a stubby dagger made of a dull grey metal from somewhere unseen. He thrusts the dagger down into the amulet, and cuts down severing the thing into two pieces. ”There.”

The elder Irian Stormeye, fixes Gryak with his one good eye. ”Really Gryak? We said no weapons. But strangely, you did cut it in two. Did sundering it eliminate the curse our guests have told us it has? What say you Petals, does that solve our problem? And what do you think has changed that the Petals tried to do what you have now done?”

Jasak frowns as he says, ”Perhaps you should put the rest of them out here and Grayak can make a little pile of gold for us? And maybe in doing do Grayak will bring all the curses down upon himself. Life is risk, eh Grayak?”

Grayak says, ”Yes, produce the rest and I will destroy them as well.”

Harkin says, ”You have done our people a great service. But what of the threat? Do you think you defeated what brought this threat and ended what destroyed Nantyr and his folk? And what of the remaining Houndstooth Clan members? Do you have any recommendations for us based on what you’ve seen? Falco, what does your Warper-Sar say to you about this? What of you Elayas, what do your arcane arts tell you about all this?”
-----------------------------------------
Outside, Mak winces a bit from the pain in his leg. One of the guards seems to notice. ”They may be in there a while you know. You may as well sit.” Clearly, chairs are a foreign concept for these liontaurs. About half stand, and the others lay against the stone paving as a lion might.

”So the Houndtooth Clan is gone? How? I’m not sure there are enough hell hounds on the isle to wipe out an entire clan. What happened to them? Did you stop it? What was it? Will it … will it come here?” The other liontaurs look at Mak, some a bit incredulous at the tale, and others with a bit of apprehension.

Falco's eyes widen as the dagger destroys the amulet. He cannot image that those of on the council are more powerful then the Petals but it may be possible. He quickly casts detect magic and focuses his effort on the dagger and the now destroyed amulet. 'I think that was one of the magic ones he destroyed.'

Hearing that questions on the magic and curse have been directed at our experts in eldritch and religious things, Rolth focuses his attention on the matters affecting taurkind that Chief Harkin raised. "Thank you, Chiefs, we are glad to have been of service to the people. As far as the remaining Houndstooth Clan members, I do not think they have enough taurs left to protect and grow their hold on their own. But I wonder if Domi has guided our path here, with a potential solution that resolves their precarious position while also taking advantage of the offer from the Purple Duke of Minotaur Isle. You could consider whether granting the Duke's request to send some of his folk here would allow you to kill two hellhounds with one spear, so to speak. The minotaurs' fierce fighting style and skilled traders would complement those of the Houndstooth liontaurs, and the Houndstooth folk could guide and monitor the minotaurs as they learn our ways and customs. I hope that you will consider this option."

DM Mark - A Proposal
Tuesday February 16th, 2021 12:53:37 AM

Falco is a bit astonished that Grayak was able to damage the amulet Tsak took out.
Rolth suggests that the Houndstooth Clan has too few remaining members to continue, but perhaps the Council would consider the Purple Duke’s request to send some of his mintotaur folk here, and these minotaurs could perhaps make a home with these surviving liontaurs could live with them, benefiting both peoples there.
Tsak offers for the liontaurs here to break all the amulets, and he asks his friends if this indeed has ended their power?
Kiwina silently calls on his ancestral spirits, asking them to determine if the destroyed amulet and Grayak’s dagger are magic. After a couple of rounds, the spirits speak in a tinkling voice that is not really speech but still Kiwina knows that the amulet has a weak magic aura consistent with the lingering aura of something that once held magic but no longer does. He also knows that Grayak’s dagger is not magic. Kiwina’s sharp eye will tell him that Grayak’s dagger is probably adamantine.
Mak says that the Houndstooth Clan survives, and that he and his friends stopped what threatened them.

(I presume Tsak follows though and dumps the other amulets out, though some detected as magic while others did not. Do you put them all out there?)

If any other amulets are put on the table, Grayak happily carves them up.

As for the minotaurs, this is the first time the Council is hearing about a proposal of minotaurs being sent here.

Irian looks at the Petals with his one says, ”Minotaurs coming here? Why, and to what purpose? If the thought is to have them live with the remnants of the Houndstooth Clan, well, we would need to discuss this with them. That clan was always a bit standoffish, but perhaps that was just Nantyr.”

Tenzar then speaks up, ”Minotaurs eh? Hmmm. Perhaps we could establish a place for them near my holding. Do you think they would take to mining and smithing?”

Harkin looks at the Petals. ”You know, I had a different idea. We had discussed this briefly. How would you Petals like to form a Clan of our own here? I mean, you wouldn’t be an official liontaur clan, but we could work things out. You could bring others and settle here. What say all of you, is land and a clan holding reward enough for what you have done for us? We’d help you get started - livestock, seed, teach you how to build. Or perhaps you’d prefer to live here as merchants? You already have a ship to start. Why Falco, you could even set up a shrine to your Warper-Sar and bring more of your owl folk. What about your Elyas? A teacher of the arcane arts might be a good addition here.”

“Oh, and exactly what does the Purple Duke want? What is his proposal? Does he seek a minotaur settlement here like there are liontuars near a place they call Greenfell?”

----------------------------------
Outside, Mak has not really answered the guards’ questions.

”You know, if you don’t wanna tell us what happened out there, we’re not gonna make you. But I think the fate of a Clan is something we ought to know about.”
“Yeah, exactly what happened to them? What sort of thing did you stop? C’mon, you can tell us - one guard to another.”
“It’s kinda hard to believe something out there could threaten a whole clan. What did you see?” “Is that how you hurt your leg?”

Mak laughed at the last question. "No, I hurt my leg in battle. As for the fate of the Houndstooth clan, what remains of them is safe. Even as one guard to another you must realize that the chiefs will tell you soon enough. If they had wanted everyone to know before they'd come up with a plan my friends wouldn't be talking to them behind closed doors."

"Tell me though. Why is it that the clans are so..competitive? They almost seem to dislike one another."

As the amulets are shattered Falco continues using detect magic to insure that the magic or curse is in fact broken when the material is broken. If show he will just chalk the whole thing up to being a mystery. By the time he catches up an offer for running a town is, oddly, on the table.

"I can see some appeal to having a place for refugees to go but really, that may not be the best use of our abilities. Tsak does indeed hand over all the amulets and watches with satisfaction as they are destroyed.

He feels that the offer to stop adventuring and start a clan should be discussed as a group, and surely the council don't expect an answer on the spot. If so it would be a no from Tsak.

"We would be happy to see all of the amulets destroyed. I think a half of one would be enough for use to use if we need to warn others what to avoid."

Hoping to support Rolth in greater explanations, Kiwina mentions, "The Purple Duke was indeed interested in placing a colony of minotaurs on the island if it meets the approval of this Council. He wrote the details in a letter for us to provide to you. . . And since we do not seem to be waiting on Nantyr any longer, perhaps this is the time. "If it pleases you, I would be delighted to present the Duke's proposal now. With your leave, I can open and read it to all who are assembled here, as one of the Duke's representatives to your Council. Then you would be well-positioned to decide whether it should be addressed now, perhaps in concert with the fate of the Houndstooth clan, or independently at a more appropriate time. As to the matter of settling down ourselves as villagers or merchants, I must confess that I am not certain that is the path that Domi is leading me down for now, as much as I am drawn to this land and its taurs. There are still dangers afoot, and the Eight Petaled Rose is called to take them on. You earlier asked whether the Deep is defeated, and the answer is almost certainly not. The bit of tentacle that we destroyed seemed to be only a small piece of a great abomination, and at sea, we did see a great rock that is striking in its likeness to the shape of these amulets. I would unravel that mystery before declaring victory over the Deep. In any event, here and now, shall I present the Duke's proposal?"

DM Mark - A Proposal
Wednesday February 17th, 2021 2:12:41 AM

Falco is a bit puzzled these amulets now seem to be so easy to destroy. Indeed, as the amulets are destroyed, they seem to lose their enchantments. He politely declines running a clan holding.
Tsak turns out all the amulets on the table, about 14 in all.
Kiwina agrees with the destruction of the accursed amulets. He informs the Council that the Purple Duke would like to establish a permanent minotaur settlement on Liontaur Isle.
Rolth offers to read the Purple Duke’s proposal. He also politely declines the offer to run a settlement here. He says that whatever force was at work here is not gone, though some sort of tentacle was a piece of it. That piece at least was destroyed in the grotto.
Mak explains his injury, and tells the other guards that they will need to see what the chiefs choose to tell them about what happened with the Houndtooth Clan. He asks why the clans seem so competitive and even a bit disagreeable.

Regarding the amulets, Knowledge Arcana DC 15 or Intelligence DC 17:Highlight to display spoiler: {You are puzzled that you were unable to break the magical amulets in the grotto, but you recall that three things have happened since then: The grey tentacle detected as magic, was destroyed, and no longer detected as magic. The altar was not magic, but it was broken up. The amulets were removed from the grotto.}

Harkin says, “It’s a pity you are not interested in forming a clan of your own here. I think your group would be able to build an interesting clan, though I wonder how you would establish which of you would be chief. Ah well. That was offered as a reward, so we shall consider another reward for your help. Tenzar, I presume you brought what we had discussed?”

Tenzar nods and says, ”As for the Purple Duke’s message, it appears it was sealed and intended for the Council. While I appreciate the Petals’ willingness to read it to us, I think it might be better that we read the message and discuss it among ourselves.”

Harkin continues, ”Yes, we have much to discuss. Including what to do about the Houndstooth Clan. I am worried about the viability of so small a group on their own.”

“Good Petals, we are grateful for your help to this point. We would like to discuss this further. May we ask you to leave us and return tomorrow afternoon? Perhaps you can ask that archer to come as well. Arostle, Browlney - will you see to our guests' needs?”

Arostle and Browlney nod and lead the Petals out.

Outside, Mak is met with puzzled looks regarding his question about clans’ competitiveness.

”Competitive? Dislike? Oh no, they’re just from different clans.” As if that explains things. Which it does not for Mak, but seems to for them.

The the doors to the Council Hall open and the guards that were launching outside jump to their feet. Arostle and Browlney come out with the Petals.

Aristotle says, ”Well my friends, what is your pleasure? I am happy to entertain you at my home this evening. If you prefer to explore the town, I’m sure Browlney here can show you around. I understand the Council has provided you a place to rest for the night.”

Kiwina thinks it best to return to the Rose and get out of the finery, then go reprovision. He'd also noticed that Ramsey received 150 gold earlier -- more than the 50 he'd said was needed -- and wants to make sure most of the excess goes to stores for the boat. Mak ask his friends how things went with the Council. Then he tells Browlney he need some clean clothes, and perhaps some new ones as well. And then a good tavern for food and drink.
Rolth fills Mak in, and agrees some good food and such are in order. He asks Arostle if the Petals could stop by later.
Kiwina lets Mak know that one of the chiefs was able to destroy the amulets with what he thinks is an adamantine dagger. Kiwina heads to the ship for his things.
Tsak likewise goes to the ship to get his things. He sees Esmerelda slyly pretending to be asleep to lure any rats into a false sense of security. Or maybe she’s asleep. In any event, she looks so content he leaves her there.
Elyas ponders things, but the destruction of the amulets remains something of a mystery to him.

(Not sure what went wrong with my spoiler text in the previous post, but it’s fixed now. Your DM will note that he included the option of a simple Intelligence Check as an option, but no one used that option.)

Mak thinks it odd that they were able to destroy the amulets with an adamantine dagger, since he tried to do so with his adamantine sword.

The Petals make their way to their ship, and Arostle and Browlney go as well. Stepping aboard, Ramsey is there as are a few of the crew. Ramsey seems to be overseeing some crates and barrels being stowed, and you see a good deal of rope, sailcloth, pulleys, and such on the docks in front of the ship.

”Ah, welcome back. You had a good morning I trust. I’ve paid the crew, an’ they’re most grateful. A well paid crew keeps people sharp an’ loyal I say.”

Having your clothing cleaned can be arranged. When Mak asks about purchasing clothing, Browleny repeats his assertion that there are not ready made human clothes in Chessford, though there are taylors that can make whatever is required. At this point, Aristotle speaks up. ”Clothing eh? Well Browlney, sometimes it’s not what you know, but who you know. Come with me.” Aristotle is pretty agile for his age, and you can see he knows a lot of folks in the dock area as he winds his way through the bustle. Eventually, you find yourselves in a warehouse area as he interrupts a human and liontaur talking outside a large door.

Arostle addresses the human, ”Begging your pardon Parl, but I have some customers that may be in need of some goods. Can you spare a moment?”

Parl dismisses the liontaur he was talking with, who scowls a bit as he leaves. ”Ah, Aristotle, anything for you my friend. Come with me, let’s see what we have.” He opens the door to a warehouse. Inside are a few humans and liontaurs. There are shelves and bundles with all manner of things. He leads you all to an area where he has suitable clothing, mostly in the style of Asildur and it’s neighboring areas. His prices are fair. The clothing may need a bit of tailoring here and there, but Parl can have that done in short order, and about 30 min later you have what you want. Interestingly, he even has some centaur clothing, mostly in a soft leather decorated in leaf patterns.

It’s early afternoon when Arostle tells you he will see you later. Browlney takes you to a fairly nice tavern called The Pig’s Pride. Prices are a bit high, but not outrageous. However, the food and drink are excellent. They seem to have some sort of specialty bacon. It has an interesting sweet, smokey spiciness to it with a flavor that’s hard to place, but it’s really good.

As you eat, Browleny says, ”Well, the offer to form a new clan. Not sure I’ve ever seen the like of that before. And you turned it down? And what of the survivors of the Houndstooth Clan? There are a couple that Tenzar sent along to Chessford. I suppose they’ll want to rejoin their kin.”

The tavern has about a dozen liontaurs here. Over in the corner, you see some dwarves with a big platter of bacon and some ale. There are also a few humans in here, and they nod at your group as you enter.

"He cut it in half with his adamantine dagger? I should have tried to cut one in half with my *adamantine* sword....wait...I did. Chaps, I certainly hope the wool wasn't pulled over your eyes." Mak said as he suddenly felt like leaving this town would be highly desirable.

At the warehouse Mak purchased a set of rugged clothing suitable for exploring and allowed measurements to be taken so they would fit his somewhat stout frame. Mak tipped the tailor a couple of gold coins and bid the merchant farewell.

The Pig's Pride looked satisfactory to Mak and like his friend Tsak he also imposed a limit on himself of three pints. He was not happy about it, but with the 14 amulets having left the Petals possession he wanted to be ready when they came back to haunt the heroes. He nodded at the dwarves and men as he tried to take their measure.

Falco snaps out of his thought as they exit the room and quickly tells the petals what he thinks may have happened.

"Since we tried to break the amulets some things have changed. The tentacle has been destroyed first and foremost but we also took care of the alter. That may have had a large impact on the magic of the amulets! Fascination isn't it?"

Falco is surprised to see more of of the non-taur's in the place and considers striking up a conversation but would rather eat first. The plate of bacon seems ideal and he is sure to get something similar.

Elyas acknowledges Falco's hypotheses regarding the differences in conditions that might have made the amulets more vulnerable to destruction here and now. "Good thinking, the warper-sar gives you keen insights!" That resolved he manages to enjoy the dinner on offer, and quietly listens to the banter of the Petals and the local denizens here. When Browleny mentions the Houndstooth refugees in town, he wonders aloud whether we should try to visit them in the morning, before our afternoon meeting with the Council. Perhaps they can give us more clues regarding the provenance of the amulets that appeared among their people.

After enjoying dinner and drink, he is ready to go meet with Arostle as planned, to hopefully gain more insights into the political tides we are likely to be swimming in tomorrow afternoon. While moving about town, he will keep an eye out for anyone unusual who might be following or observing us. The Deep may have eyes and ears here in town, after all.

Mak purchases some clothing, tipping the taylor that adjusts the fit. At the Pig’s Pride, he acknowledges the dwarves and men in there. He doesn’t notice anything unusual about them. He asks Browlney about the Council discussion.
Falco shares his thoughts on how the amulets may have been changed so they could be destroyed. He’s pretty sure it was mostly related to the destruction of that awful piece of tentacle that was on the altar.
Elyas says he would like to visit the two Houndstooth Clan refugees in the morning.
Rolth agrees and asks Browlney if he will arrange a meeting. He keeps a sharp eye out for anyone tailing or watching the Petals as they move through town.
Kiwina is also interested in talking with the two refugees. He laments the seeming lack of vegetable among the liontaurs.
Tsak enjoys the ale and the bacon.

Looking around, Kiwina will notice the humans at another table actually have vegetable to eat. Inquiring, he is offered cooked greens, some cooked peas in their pods, and either cooked or raw carrots. Tsak asks and finds there are a number of other things available, including some nut and honey based sweets and some spiced breads.

Browlney replies to Mak, ”What will be revealed to the Clans? Well, that would be up to the each Clan Chief that is there, and how they choose to share this info among their clans. I’d think they’d be pretty open about things, especially the amulets and the outsiders in that grotto.

Browlney is happy to arrange a meeting with the two Houndstooth Clan refugees in the morning.

As discussed before, Browlney will take you around town. There’s nothing particularly unusual. The buildings are made mostly of stone, with wood and metal used here and there. The folks are neither friendly nor unfriendly. Kiwina does get some stares, moreso the further you move away from the dock area. There seems to be a small dwarven quarter here, with shops selling metal and leather goods. There are a few humans that seem to live here near the docks, as well as a few centaurs though you suspect most are just passing through.

Shadows lengthen as the warm afternoon portends a pleasant evening. Browlney will leave you at Arostle’s house, a rather grand place with wide, open windows and doorways. Browlney asks if he should meet you at the guest house or your ship in the morning.

Arostle welcome you. You are brought in to a large room adjacent to an inner courtyard and garden. ”Welcome, welcome. So, what did you think of the Council Meeting? I’ll tell you, the look on their faces when you turned down their offer of a clan, well, that was something. I got the impression that Harkin and Tenzar still have some reward in mind for you though. Tomorrow's meeting should be interesting.”

Drinks are brought in, mostly a very nice blue wine and some ale or minted water for those that prefer. Dinner is a nice assortment of things, mostly meat based though there are some breads and some starchy tubers of some kind.

In addition, he asks some questions about the creatures in the grotto and is very interested in the Chuul as he’s never heard of such a creature. If you mention the hybrid liontaur-octopus thing he’s pretty horrified.

Eventually, he will bid you good night and ask if you need a guide? You will need one to the guest house, but your ship is easy to find from here.

Mak still wasn't convinced the amulets were indeed destroyed despite the claims that the tentacle and altar was somehow fortifying them. It seemed a stretch to him and one based on guesses rather than facts. What was more easy to believe was that the petals had been tricked by the clan chiefs.

So he kept an eye on Arostle to see if perhaps the taur was hiding an amulet about his person while keeping his distance. Mak didn't say much that evening but smiled and answered any questions put to him.

OOC: Perception +5, Roll 9 (ugh); Diplomacy +1, Roll 14;

Kiwina has carrots, and some of the overly-softened greens and breads. But mostly he enjoys the ale. While Mak is able to drink prodigious amounts for a human, Kiwina out-masses Mak considerably and easily keeps the same pace.

When Browlney asks, Kiwina replies that he personally will be at the ship. He feels closest with the spirits when he is on the water. He would not expect everyone to go to the ship, however, when more comfortable quarters are available.

At Arostle's house, Kiwina does not try to give a serious answer about his impression of the council meeting. But he does note, "And Rolth would make a more than competent chief, if only he felt Domi wanted it." Since the party is not hiding anything from Arostle, it seems likely that descriptions of the Chuul and the fighting will include mentioning the hybrids and the undead.

Kiwina is up and ready by the time it's time to meet the Houndstooth Clan refugees in the morning.

Rolth thanks Browlney for his guidance around town, and Arostle for his welcome. Hard to argue with a second dinner and another round of ale! With respect to the Council meeting, Rolth will allow that he was quite surprised--and proud--to be offered a clan of our own. "It is a pity that Domi has not called us to that path," he offers with a sideways glance and smile toward Kiwina. "Perhaps one day it will be different.. In the meantime, how do you think things went, Arostle? Are they likely to be well disposed to our request on the Purple Duke's behalf?"

At the end of the evening, Rolth is content to go to the Rose, since all others seem to be headed there, but if others will stay in the guest house, that would be his preference. In the morning, he will return to the Rose and don his courtier's clothes that were gifted to us by the Duke for just this purpose, and suggest that others do the same. Then off to meet the refugees before heading to the Council meeting at the appointed time.

Mak Mak remains suspicious of everyone. Those clan chiefs are a tricksey bunch. Even this Arostle can’t be trusted. Mak heads to the ship.
Falco enjoys the meal at Arostle’s house and will sleep aboard the ship.
Kiwina makes due with the meal, and prefers the spiritual connection to the water he feels aboard the ship.
Rolth admits to being surprised at the Council’s offer, and he asks Arostle how he thinks the meeting went. He will go with the others to the ship and dress in his finery in the morning, suggesting others do the same.
Elyas tolerates the evening, eager to get back to the ship to study. He keeps his clothing simple the next day.
Tsak reluctantly dresses up the next day.

Aristotle says, ”That meeting was interesting. All were surprised that you folk would forgo a clan holding. I think it kinda made Tenzar mad, but I’m not sure why. I think my might have cost him something, maybe a bet or something. He hates that the most, losing money.” He bids you good night as you leave later.

The evening aboard the ship is quiet, the muted sound of water lapping against the hull is a reassuring sound. Morning comes with the smell of good food. Ramsey makes sure you have a lovely breakfast. Clearly he sent out for some baked goods, and had some eggs and sausages cooked and ready there on the ship.

Browlney drops by the docks and takes you to the refugees. They’re still a bit traumatized. They recall Nantyr and some of the others returning to the clan holding a few times and leading others away to “something greater.” A few could sense that something was wrong and fled. These two however were there when Nantyr and some others came and forced those that would not go with them, and these two hid. When they emerged, most everyone was gone. They fled toward Chessford and wound up at the Goldmane Clan holding. They don’t have much to add beyond this.

Later that day, you return to the Council of Clans. They still require you not bring your weapons into the Council Hall, and guards stand ready to hold them for you if you wish. Aristotle is there, along with the other Council members you saw before, and a few other liontaurs of some importance. They are generally well dressed and groomed.

Harkin seems to want to address two things initially. He asks if you have changed your minds about forming a clan here on Liontaur Isle.

Then he says, ”Well, it seems that the Purple Duke of the minotaurs has a proposition. Just as there is a liontaur enclave established on Minotaur Isle, the Duke seems to think that might be a good idea here as well. He also proposes that we meet with him to discuss establishing some better trade relations, perhaps banding the Taur Isles together in this and strengthening our trade position with the mainlands. Jasak here thinks this a bad idea, worries it may be a ruse or lead to trouble. But it is an interesting idea.”

“So tell me, is this a good idea? Can the minotaurs be trusted in this? And I wonder what this means for Centaur Isle?”

Rolth Niheow (BatMark)  d20+14=33 ;

"I for one think that the Duke's offer is a good one. There are many good reasons to join forces. The minotaurs are fierce warriors whose fighting style will complement those of us liontaurs in the dark times that we face, with the threat from the Deep that still lingers. They are also expert traders, and we will profit more greatly in partnership than in competition with them in dealing with the mainland. We have dealt directly with the Duke several times, and found him to be fair, generous, and wise, so yes, I believe he can be trusted if you make a deal with him. And if I am wrong, it will be only a small settlement of minotaurs that an island of strong liontaurs can easily monitor and control. There may be some minor incidents as we learn each others' ways, but nothing that can't be worked out. As far as Centaur Isle, I have little direct experience, but I imagine that they will not want to be left out of a strong trading alliance. Add to that the strong possibility that Domi is leading us down this path of unity and a return to noble grace, and I think you have many reasons to accept the offer."

Mak couldn't disagree more with Rolth's statement, but he was outside once more and didn't hear it. Diplomacy was Rolth's thing and Mak was still distrustful of these taurs. He found them, those rank and file ones, to be bigoted. So while some of them might have high minded ideals, outside of those enlightened few these taurs wanted nothing to do with the others, nor even non taurs.

He supposed human settlements might show the same attitudes to those like Tsak, but after Greenfell Mak wondered if this measure might be a little too premature.

Given all his attitudes he would not speak out as he'd essentially, even if tacitly, agreed to work towards the Purple Dukes goals. He'd focus on being vigilant in case things went sideways.

When Rotlh finishes Falco takes two steps forward to be better seen in the group of big folks.

"I think Rolth has the right of it though I would offer one small difference. A small settlement to build trust and understanding is a good thing. I would caution against the idea of 'monitor and control' as that will only reinforce and give place to the growth the bigotries of the past."

He pauses and looks at each of the members of the council.

"The way of the Wold is change, evolution and mutation. The Taur Isles can be a force in the Wold if they band together and extend a hand to each other and to those outside. Yes you have many fierce warriors but so does everyone so the use of warriors must be a last resort. Trade, alliance and cooperation will get you farther."

"I do think there are large benefits to breaking down barriers between the different Taur races, but I do wonder if now is the right time for it. these Deep worshipers are concerning. if there is a known enemy force using mental magic to control people, any effort to unite the peoples of the islands or soothe old wounds is at risk. it wouldn't take much for one of these amulets to sow discord in one or more of these settlements and undo all the good that could be done.

If told before leaving the ship that weapons will not be allowed in the Council meeting, Kiwina leaves his on the Rose.

Kiwina's ears perk up when he hears that some of the Houndstooth clan fled before the majority were forced out. The more that survived, the better they will be able to defend their home if they can be found and allowed to return.

Kiwina has not changed his mind about joining a clan.

"I cannot speak for the centaurs of Centaur Isle, as that is not my home. But from what I know, it seems to me that an alliance that did not offer to include them would be seen as a potential threat. On the other hand, all three races have managed to adjust to each other on Bridge Isle. That might be encouraging."

"From our dealings with him, I think you can trust the Duke to take some care in the choice of who to send here, in an attempt to minimize friction. But minotaurs definitely have their own, and sometimes odd, point of view. You may have to make accommodations as well. I guess the question is whether you can reach an agreement that would make it worthwhile."

(Diplomacy = 15 to support Rolth)

"Lastly, I would point out that we also fought one of these agents of the deep on Minotaur Isle, although of a different sort. You just may have a common enemy -- and Elyas is right that they could use taurs' distrust of each other against us."
