It looks like we have passages opening up to our left and right as we navigate this hallway. Right now we have passed one passage on the left and one on the right and it looks like we still have six passages on the right and eight on the left to contend with. If we move a little further where we only have 5 passageways ahead of us on one side we could have Gaffer start sealing passageways off with his walls of stone. That would just leave whatever we have left on the other side and we could put Des on point at those junctions so that he would intercept whatever ghoul attack would come from there. Just my thoughts on how to strategically navigate this place."

Sarge lets the group know her spell will last for about 90 minutes, the group should not tarry long Toston points out the ghouls seem to be ahead and suggests changing formation to accomodate the possible threat as well as the passages ahead on the sides Gaffer moves up with the party, his Daylight spell throwing light far down the corridor Des moves forward and Readies an attack with his blade Sharpe moves ahead as well, and cautions back down the line to watch the rear. Hmerrin keeps his back spot and tells Toston to feel free to move up, but keep single file to allow movement. Readied for a rear attack
The sounds ahead grow a bit louder and in the dim light almost 90' away a ghoul appears. It steps slowly and then quickly, trailing a disease filled talon hand across the wall. It stops just in the dim light provided by the Daylight spell, shifting from foot to foot. Coming out of the dark is a second which comes to a stop and drops to its haunches. A talon hand reaches up the wall and taps several times, pauses and taps again. They then quickly retreat into the black, more clicks and scraping sounds are heard

I would hazard based on that scout that the other ghouls are positioning themselves based on whatever communication that ghoul just did with the claw tapping. The way I see it we either move quickly down the passageway to get to the point where we can use our wall of stone tactic or we prepare for a pitched battle here. There are obviously plenty of them moving around."

It only takes the paladin a heartbeat to sort though the dim lim light, but that is all the time the creature needs to close the gap. With a high pitched shriek it comes at him, another coming in just behind.

Des shakes off the supernatural paralysis and hits the ghoul with his great axe once. Toston move and bathes the pair in dragon fire. The incredibly fast creatures seem to be able to dodge the worst of it Hmerrin drops the second torch and fires a series of arrows, hitting once Sharpe moves up and fire, trying to also keep an eye out to the rear. His arrow thuds into the creatures chest even though the ghoul was afforded cover from the cavern wall Gaffer seals a passage ahead with a Wall of Stone Sarge moves up behind Des and uses her Resistant Touch ability on him. He gets +3 to saves for the next minute.
The pair engaged with Des hiss and shriek. One turns and disappears into the black, while the other attacks Sharpe and Hmerrin see them as they come in, and again the speed at which they close is frightening. Two appear at the edge of Gaffer's Daylight spell and in seconds are upon Sharpe

Turning to face the attacks from behind, "Damn these things are tough. Do we want to trap them in with us, at least kill a couple without them running away?" Gaffer clutches his focus tight as he casts Flame Stike, centered on S14 so that it catches both G1 and G2 without getting to close to Sharpe, grimacing as the column of flame creates eerie shadows against the ghouls.

Toston steps towards Sarge and Des and casts Scorching Ray twice, thanks to his metamagic rod The first spell hits both times, but the second spell completely misses Sharpe fires a volley into the ghouls attacking Hmerrin. Impaling it 3 times. Des heals himself again and stands his ground. The Paladin then sends forth a burst of positive energy. Paladin channel works like clerics. Making 2 Types of targets to choose from Undead and living. If Undead is chosen, All undead in 30' take damage. If Living are chosen, all living creaturesa are healed DM assumes your language indicating Undead and damage is chosen Hmerrin is paralyzed! Gaffer casts Flame Strike at the newest ghoulish attacker. Sarge also channels holy power in a burst about herself
The ghoul before the helpless Hmerrin blasts to dust with the second wave of positive energy The other ghouls survive the energy bursts as well as the Flame Strike.
With a hiss and a shift to its right, the ghoul on Des lashes out yet again. Gaffer surprises himself by resisting the disease and hopes it's a feat he can repeat as he casts Remove Disease on Sarge, ignoring the ghoul behind him. (Remove Disease CL check: 27 and 21. A little unclear if Sarge has 1 or 2 diseases remaining. The first roll was a 27 so either way she is cured of one disease.)

The gnome spots another ghoul down the hall, in the dim light poking its head from around a corner, only 40' away. It watches the fleeing ghoul for a breif moment and then turns it's attention back to the party

Toston remains aloft and Gaffer moves forward with the summoned tigers. Des attempts to cure Sarge. The dwarf cleric is already free of the disease. She is still suffering from some of the ailments. Sarge current has -2 to her dex Hmerrin puts the question of dropping back with Sarge
The chambers and dark corridors ahead are quiet. Somewhere two wounded ghoul like creatures are stalking, but they apparently don't have the stomach for another conflict quite yet

Toston says, "I thought the crystal thing was spawning monsters. Wouldn't that suggest that more could be added to their number if we delay? If we continue are we going to be able to establish a base camp or something farther ahead? Do we split the difference, allow Sarge a respite to recover but then press on with Gaffer sealing passageways until he runs out of spells before falling back? How much healing and resources does everyone have left anyway? I used my metamagic rod for the day and breathe weapon. I have half my 3rd level spells left and a single second level spell. I can still fight without magic but these monsters are tough so I don't know that if we press on will we get too far and not be able to fall back if we need to?"
Toston keeps an eye out for ghoul activity but does not engage. He will report anything he sees to his friends though

Hmerrin listens to Sarge and Toston, and decides to interpret both replies as "we're in trouble".
"We fall back," he announces. "Not as far as the dwarf wall, but back to the beginning of this tunnel complex. We set up camp there, everyone rests to get their spells back, and we try again.
Gaffer, are these walls you're putting up permanent, and can you take one down that you put up without casting another spell on it? I'm wondering if you can seal the entrance to this area once we've fallen back."
Regardless of the answer, Hmerrin asks Dez to take point, and move back to the start. Gaffer to follow, then Sarge, then Hmerrin, then Toston.

Gaffer falls in line as Hmerrin guides the party in retreat.
"The walls are permenant, I can use another spell to change them after they are built, but otherwise they stay as they are."
If the party are going for a long rest, Gaffer will cast his remaining two wall spells on the two openings closet to the party. Likely, V7 and Q8. If they are just giving Sarge time to prepare the spell she needs he will hold on to the spells.
"If more are being created, I wonder if our best bet is to reclaim the areas one by one. Seal off the entrance ahead, clear it out, make an opening for ourselves and move forward."

Sarge and Toston give an assessment of where they stand and Hmerrin takes the news as the group needs to fall back and so he calls for it Gaffer's Wall of Stone are permanent. Physical damage or other magic would be required to take them down. The group is pulling back, but not as far and Gaffer casts more spells of Wall of Stone...V7 and Q8. Dez takes point on the return and the group notes a couple torches Hmerrin tossed down side passages are missing If Toston is correct, time could be essential, an open portal to another dimension or plane or whatever, means the longer it exists the more creatures could come through
The group takes position just outside the last breeched wall the dwarves originally erected. A grim reminder that Walls of Stone is not a permanent solution. Toston, Sarge and Gaffer need nearly 22 hours to regain spells and abilities. Dez and Hmerrin stand ready at watch
Over the next 3 hours, the pair watches as the glowing of the torchlight of Hmerrin's side tosses are suddenly snuffed out
At hour 8 a blue light pulse illuminates the far off hall, a flicker in the black. A deep resonance bass rolls though the ground, more felt than heard, a higher pitched hiss answers. Scraping, tapping in a broken rythym begins...then nothing. Just the dark.
Hours slowly move on, the dark and silence persist and at long last, Gaffer and Sarge prepare their spells and Toston awakens refreshed. It crept in slowly over the course of hours and hours or dark, but each of you 'hears' within the enclosed caverns sssshhhhhhhhhhhhhh like a constant background in your head.

To Sarge he replies, "might as well, though I'm not sure it did much good."

Hmerrin still has plenty of torches in his haversack, and plans to play the same game again, tossing lit ones into side passages as he passes by.

Sarge is able to cure and remove all of the ill effects from the ghoul attack The group prayers and meditates and is ready to go and does so
Gaffer renews the Daylight and Pass Without a Trace spell on the group
Moving into the maze like corridors of the cavern, the group quickly notes the lack of the scratching and clicking that they had heard in the last two attempts. the corridors and passages are still. The light ahead spills forth to reveal the remains of the ghouls killed earlier, still lying in the passage

He attempts to direct a thought towards the shhing sound in his head. "I'm sorry, are we being to loud?" and then keeps a close eye (Perception: 24) on their surroundings while Toston checks the corpses.

"They may have fallen back to another position," Sarge says of the ghouls. "They did show an ability to think tactically. I guess we'll find out."
Hmerrin moves forward with the group, again tossing lit torches into the open side passageways.
As Toston checks out the dead ghouls, he waits and watches.
"It'd be really helpful if they backed up so they could only come at us from one direction," he answers Sarge.
Once Toston is finished with his searching, Hmerrin urges the group to continue.

Toston moves up and looks over the lifeless husks of the ghouls and is rewarded with with a discovery. Embedded in the skin in several places, each ghouls has some gemstones. The stones appear to be almost fused with the creature. The placement appears random on each body and the best speculation is that it happened somehow as they came through the gate. The value of the collection is 12,000gp
There are no signs of the remaining ghouls. They may have retreated further back towards the gate the party is searching for or perhaps they are deeper in the near maze of the side passages. Wherever they are currently, they appear to have no desire to confront the group
